A more spectral, but no less fascinating, presence is Daisy. We only see her viewpoint clearly once, years after the scandal. She alone seems to have moved on with something like success, but she is in many ways still a childlike presence. Life is part allegory, part character study. Nothing is as unstable as a family, particularly in a digital age. Though it is seriously melancholy — don’t expect real redemption for anyone — it is an artfully told and important story.

Oxford band First Right Theft to play at The Moose Saturday By Erin Williams Special to The Star

Members of First Right Theft like to call themselves the “working man’s rock band,” an idea that helps the group generate a more universal appeal by simply working hard and playing good music. “We don’t want to have that big head that most people have,” guitar player Kyle Pritchett said. “We all just want to get along with everybody, no matter who you are.” The five-member rock group can be traced back to vocalist Phillip Johns, who, upon returning home from the military, decided he wanted to learn how to play the guitar. From there, he began playing with fellow bass player — and his cousin — Andy Pruitt. Johns was into playing “just for fun” until the band came

across its drummer Lane Dewberry around September 2010. Dewberry was so good that “it got real serious real quick,” Johns said. After undergoing a name change and a lineup rearrangement, the present-day First Right Theft has come into being. They have been playing across the state, writing their own songs and playing covers at their shows. The group finds its songwriting inspiration in “everyday life,” says Pritchett. “If [something] causes an emotional response with us … we think it could probably get a response out of other people, too,” he said. “We all come up with lyrics to the songs,” Dewberry added. “We all try to help out.” Although Dewberry says that “for most of us, this is the first

band we’ve been in,” this experience has been rejuvenating for rhythm guitar player Cody Doss. He had actually given up playing guitar years ago because of carpal tunnel, but recently picked one up again. Now that he is in the band, Doss said he feels like he has been given another chance at pursuing what he loves. “I guess I came out of retirement,” he said. “It’s kind of surreal.” The band members get along well, and aren’t in need of a group leader to get work done. “Having everybody’s input is what it’s all about,” Dewberry said. “We’ve got five good guys on the same page ready to go,” Johns said. Although playing shows and gaining fans is nice, Pritchett feels that the most enjoyment comes from hanging out with his band-

mates. “I think we have the most fun when we’re practicing,” he said with a laugh. “We’re all really, really good buddies.” For now, the band is looking to play more shows and record an album, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they have to be in a rush to do so. “We got something good going, we don’t want to take a wrong turn anywhere,” Pritchett said.

For the first-timers planning to be in the audience for any upcoming shows, Pritchett references an encounter from a recent show where several people came for the first time. The members shied away from telling attendees what they were going to play, preferring for the people to listen with an unbiased opinion. The crowd’s response was honestly put: “I didn’t really know what y’all were going to play, but I was happy with it,” Pritchett said. JSU Vocal Alumni hosts competition, concert Music, anyone? The call goes out for music at Jacksonville State University’s Vocal Alumni Competition and Benefit Hervey Concert Folsom Sept. 10 Artists in Action and 11 with a brandnew concert series that welcomes the participation of the entire community. The event, which has as its theme “Sharing the Joy of Singing,” is two-fold. The Richard Armstrong Vocal Competition for JSU music majors will be held in the Performance Center of Mason Hall on campus at noon on Sept. 10 and is open to the public. The JSU Vocal Alumni Series Benefit Concert on Sept. 11 will be at the First United Methodist Church in Anniston at 6 p.m. In this program, alumni from JSU’s David L. Walters music department will present a concert of arias from the Romantic period. A chorus of singers from JSU and the surrounding community will be featured. John Gourley, lead singer of Portugal. The Man, has one heck of a back story. He grew up in Alaska, the son of adventurous homesteaders and Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race veterans, rising before dawn to feed his family’s dog team. At times, he went to school with just a handful of classmates and lived a lifestyle that in no way prepared him for the rest of the world. “It’s pretty bizarre, right — that a band actually came out of there?” Gourley said. “Being born and raised there you really, really take it for granted. People who live in New York City really take it for granted, too, I guess. We would go there and visit and just see all the things we never got to see growing up. We would watch ‘Sesame Street,’ people with these tall buildings living in apartments. I had no idea what that life was about.” It’s been seven years since the 30-year-old Gourley and his band mates left Alaska for Portland, Ore. Only bassist Zach Carothers remains with Gourley from the original Wasilla crew, but the Last Frontier still resonates in Gourley’s songwrit-

ing. The title of the band’s sixth album and first for Atlantic, “In the Mountain in the Cloud,” is a reference to Mount McKinley. And the group’s psychedelic bent, reminiscent of the spacier sounds from The Flaming Lips and Built to Spill, recalls Alaska’s open, airy vistas. The band reinforced the association with its first video from the album for “Got it All (This Can’t Be Living Now).” It offers a dark, apocalyptic vision played out with Gourley — hatless because the director wanted to see his face — on the runners of a dog sled. Gourley spoke with The Associated Press about that particularly cold shoot, how dog mushing applies to rock ‘n’ roll and his band’s struggles with its latest album in a recent phone interview from Portland: AP: The new video was shot at your parents’ home? Gourley: It was 25 below in our back yard while we were shooting this (laughs). ... The loose idea was obvious — OK, let’s take out the dog sled and mush around and all that. When you get back home you just do that anyway, so let’s film it. It was freezing cold. ... Frozen hair, frozen beard, mustache. At the end of the day my face would just

be pink and swollen. AP: How did your family end up in Alaska? Gourley: My dad just left high school in ‘69, went to Woodstock and, after half a year of college for architecture, just took off for Alaska. He bought a van and went straight into the mountains and built a cabin. He didn’t even have the $50 for the deed to the land. He really worked his way through all of that and found my mother along the way in the same town, in Wasilla, and found out they both came from Morrisville, N.Y., in almost the exact kind of way — just out of high school and going to Alaska. Their parents knew each other and they knew each other’s parents, but they’d never met. So just a really amazing story. AP: Why did you give up dog mushing for rock ‘n’ roll? Gourley: I think the best experience I ever had was also the worst and the one that turned me off of it. We were going to do this long run, you know a three-hour run. We’re riding around and we go out on the tundra. I’d never really been out there. ... We were riding along next to these herds of caribou. It was just amazing. But all the way along I’d been taking

it in, my hat had kind of blown back and it was ... cold, and my ears just froze really bad. It hurts really bad at first when it’s freezing, but it’s nothing compared to the thawing. AP: How much does dog mushing still stick with you? Gourley: I found it’s really just fascinating the way it applies to the business world or what I refer to as the “real world” — because Alaska’s just something different. It’s just helped me understand things a lot better than I would have growing up somewhere else. AP: The new album has been received positively, but you’ve said it was a difficult process with some conflict in the band. How did you work it out? Gourley: The record was a mess and falling apart because we ... were thinking Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones for this record. We were beating ourselves up trying to make this crazy record and we had a meeting with Craig (Kallman, Atlantic chairman and CEO) about why we play music and songwriting and I wanted to know what he liked about our band. ... As we left he said, “You know, just make the record you want to make and we’ll put it out.” That felt good to hear.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is ending its digital music sales this month after seeing increased competition. The world’s largest retailer confirmed Tuesday that it will stop selling MP3s as of Aug. 29. Customers who already bought digital music through its site may continue to use and manage their music there. The company said it will now concentrate its digital efforts on its Vudu.com video-streaming service, which it acquired last year.

Gavin DeGraw home after beating Singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw has been released from a New York City hospital after an attack that left him with a broken nose, a concussion and other injuries. DeGraw tweeted Tuesday afternoon that he didn’t remember much of Sunday’s beating. Police say DeGraw was attacked by a group of men in the East Village. No arrests have been made yet. DeGraw canceled concerts this week in upstate New York and Massachusetts after the assault.

TV industry loses record number of subscribers By Peter Svensson Associated Press

The weak economy is hitting Americans where they spend a lot of their free time: at the TV set. They’re canceling or forgoing cable and satellite TV subscriptions in record numbers, according to an analysis by The Associated Press of the companies’ quarterly earnings reports. The U.S. subscription-TV industry first showed a small net loss of subscribers a year ago. This year, that trickle has turned into a stream. The chief cause appears to be persistently high unemployment and a housing market that has many people living with their parents, reducing the need for a separate cable bill. But it’s also possible that people are canceling cable, or never signing up in the first place, because they’re watching cheap Internet video. Such a threat has been hanging over the industry. If that’s the case, viewers can expect more restrictions on online video, as TV companies and Hollywood studios try to make sure that they get paid for what they produce. In a tally by the AP, eight of the nine largest subscription-TV providers in the U.S. lost 195,700 subscribers in the April-toJune quarter. That’s the first quarterly loss for the group, which serves about 70 percent of households. The loss amounts to 0.2 percent of their 83.2 million video subscribers. The group includes four of the five biggest cable companies, which have been losing subscribers for years. It also includes phone companies Verizon Communications Inc. and AT&T Inc. and satellite broadcasters DirecTV Group Inc. and Dish Network Corp. These four have been poaching customers from cable, making up for cable-company losses — until now. The phone companies kept adding subscribers in the second quarter, but Dish lost 135,000. DirecTV gained a small number, so combined, the U.S. satellite broadcasters lost subscribers in the quarter — a first for the industry. The AP’s tally excludes Cox Communications, the third-largest cable company, and a bevy of smaller cable companies. Cox is privately held and does not disclose subscriber numbers. That’s about one out of every 300 U.S. households, and more than twice the losses in the second quarter of last year. Ian Olgeirson at SNL Kagan puts the number even higher, at 425,000 to 450,000 lost subscribers. The second quarter is always the year’s worst for cable and satellite companies, as students cancel service at the end of the spring semester. Last year, growth came back in the fourth quarter. But looking back over the past 12 months, the industry is still down, by Moffett’s estimate. That’s also a first. The subscription-TV industry is no longer buoyed by its first flush of growth, so the people who cancel because they’re unemployed are outweighing the very small number of newcomers who’ve never had cable or satellite before. Dish CEO Joe Clayton told analysts on a conference call Tuesday that the industry is “increasingly saturated.” But like other industry executives, Clayton sees renewed growth around the corner. Though his company saw the biggest increase in subscriber flight compared with a year ago, he blamed much of that on a strategic pullback in advertising, which will be reversed before the end of the year.

Other executives gave few indications that the industry has hit a wall. For most of the big companies, the slowdown is slight, hardly noticeable except when looking across all of them. Nor do they believe Internet video is what’s causing people to leave. Glenn Britt, the CEO of Time Warner Cable Inc. said the effect of Internet video on the number of cable subscribers is “very, very modest;” in fact, so small that it’s hard to measure. SNL Kagan’s Olgeirson said the people canceling subscriptions behind, or never signing up, are an elusive group, difficult to count. Yet he believes the trend is real, and he calls it the “elephant in the room” for the industry. Anecdotal evidence suggests that young, educated people who aren’t interested in live programs such as sports are finding it easier to go without cable. Videostreaming sites like Netflix.com and Hulu. com are helping, as they run many popular TV shows for free, sometimes the day after they air on television. In June, The Nielsen Co. said it found that Americans who watch the most video online tend to watch less TV. The ratings agency said it started noticing last fall that a segment of consumers were starting to make a trade-off between online video and regular TV. The activity was more pro-

nounced among people ages 18-34. Olgeirson expects programmers to keep tightening access to shows and movies online. A few years ago, Olgeirson said, “they threw open the doors,” figuring they’d make money from ads accompanying online video besides traditional sources such as the fees they charge cable companies to carry their channels. But if it looks as if online video might endanger revenue from cable, which is still far larger, they’ll pull back. “Are they really going to jeopardize that? The answer is no,” Olgeirson said. Already, News Corp.’s Fox broadcasting company is delaying reruns on Hulu by a week unless the viewer pays a $8-a-month subscription for Hulu Plus or subscribes to Dish’s satellite TV service. Other subscription-TV providers may join in the future. TV producers and distributors want to discourage people from dropping their subscriptions. Moffett believes it’s hard to separate the effect of the economy from that of Internet video. Subscription-TV providers keep raising rates because content providers such as Hollywood studios and sports leagues demand ever higher prices. That’s causing a collision with the economic realities of American households. “Rising prices for pay TV, coupled with growing availability of lower cost alternatives, add to a toxic mix at a time when disposable income isn’t growing,” Moffett said.

This week’s DVD selections include one movie about weddings and two films about aliens. Jumping the Broom: Two families battle over wedding traditions. Angela Bassett stars. If you only look at the cast, it might appear this is a comedy aimed at an African-American audience. But this sweet and funny story about how it’s possible for two people to fall in love without falling into bed has universal themes. It shows how love conquers all. Elizabeth Hunter’s script is a smooth blend of tough emotional moments with light-hearted comedy. It avoids almost every wedding movie cliche. Loretta Devine’s role comes the closest to being a film stereotype, but she never goes over the parody edge. The emotional elements may make Jumping the Broom sound like a downer, but it’s presented in such a loving way it’s one of the better romantic comedies to come along in years. Mars Needs Moms: Visitors from the red planet are kidnapping mothers to take care of Martian children in this animated adventure. Milo (performed by Seth Green and voiced by Seth Robert Dusky) is a 10-year-old who boldly announces he’d be better off without his mother. That night, a spaceship arrives to transport Mom (Joan Cusack) to Mars. She’s part of an alien abduction program that snatches moms and drains them of their mom-ness.

Mars Needs Moms, from the motion-captured animation to the 3-D effects, is out of this world. Too bad the story fails to get off the ground. Paul: Two Earthlings (Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) help an alien who has escaped from a government facility. Paul starts with the absurd and has no place to go except down. So instead of smart humor, the film keeps falling back on such immature jokes as having a deeply Christian woman (Kristen Wiig) find a new passion for profanity. The joke works the first five or six times, but by the 58th variation, any potential humor has been beaten into the ground. The film is most funny when it references classic sci-fi — from the tune being played by a band at a biker bar to Paul’s choice

Some hits, mostly misses in ‘30 Minutes’ Aziz Ansari is a brilliantly funny man. And Ruben Fleicher should be thanking whatever god he worships for that. Fleicher would — much like Jesse Eisenberg’s character Nick — literally have had a bomb on his hands in 30 Minutes or Less without the talented Mr. Ansari. Ansari, being the movie’s saving grace, comes at some surprise considering Bobby that Fleicher directed Bozeman Eisenberg as the lead Pop in his quite awesome Cultured Zombieland. I expected the Oscar-nominated Eisenberg to really dominate the screen beside Ansari who is mainly known for his standup and being really awesome in Parks and Recreation, but it never happened. Eisenberg had some great deadpan parts but he just isn’t believable as a slacker here. In fact, that is the whole problem with this film. Even after accepting the premise and willfully suspending disbelief, no work is done to make sure the plot is believable. Nick is a slacker pizza delivery boy

The Grim Reaper remains the Giddy Reaper in this fifth installment of the whimsically formulaic horror series, in which people who have escaped death in accidents soon meet their demises in elaborate, Rube Goldberg-like machinations. Still finding ways to be inventive after four films since 2000, Final Destination 5 opens, like the others, with a graphic premonition of disaster. In the movie’s greatest set piece, a spectacularly lethal ballet of snapping cables, upheaved asphalt, scalding tar and flying metal rods is as perfectly, mesmerizingly synchronized as a Swiss watch. Soon every whistling tea kettle and offhand comment seems poised to trigger some domino-effect death. Pivotal screws and bolts shake loose all too efficiently from overhead equipment, vibrating cellphones get placed too close to lit candles on shelves, and water and electrical outlets shouldn’t be within a hundred yards of each other. The trick, which the filmmakers do well, is to give us character archetypes with enough personality not to bore us but not so much that their gruesome deaths affect us. So we have Sam’s self-sacrificing girlfriend (Emma Bell), his friend and immediate supervisor (Miles Fisher), haughty rock chick (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood), stiff boss (David Koechner) and office jerk (P.J. Byrne). After that, it’s all in the execution, so to speak. In a treat for those who saw the first film, we see some plane tickets dated 2000 on a very particular flight — suggesting Death’s been doing this longer than we thought. And with this brisk, effective film, with very good 3-D, he’ll likely be doing it again.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Amazon. com Inc. on Wednesday revealed new video and book-reading services that are designed for the iPad but bypass Apple Inc.’s fees on content sales. Wal-Mart started to stream video from its Vudu service to the iPad’s Web browser, and Amazon announced the Kindle Cloud Reader, which lets users read e-books. Amazon, the leading seller of e-books, has a Kindle app for the iPad. However, Apple recently forced it to remove a button that launches Amazon’s Kindle website, where users buy books. Apple wants companies to sell their content through its iTunes system, where it gets a 30 percent cut. Media companies are finding Apple’s fees hard to accept. So they are getting around that by avoiding apps that must be distributed through Apple’s App Store, where Apple’s fee policies apply. Earlier this summer, The Financial Times created an app-like website for its newspaper to avoid Apple’s fees. The Kindle Cloud Reader is a “Web app,” nearly indistinguishable from a regular app. Users have to go through a few steps to store the app and their books on the iPad. But when that’s done, it’s capable of reading stored books without an Internet connection. Wal-Mart’s Vudu site relies on streaming video, so it does not work without an Internet connection. Instead, Vudu is using “Live Streaming” tools from Apple to reach the tablet. Vudu.com’s business model is similar to Apple’s own iTunes. It rents out movies for $1 to $6 for a 24-hour or 48-hour viewing period. It also sells them for $5 and up, which allows viewing any time. Its claim to fame is that it has many movies on the same day they’re released on DVD. Vudu is owned by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. The Little Rock, Ark.-based retailer bought Vudu a year and a half ago.

‘The Help’ proves to be a late summer blockbuster hit By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

They answer doors, cook and serve meals, change diapers and raise children for parents who are, supposedly, too busy to bother. They do all this with an air of invisibility, ignored except when they’re being snapped at. And through it all, The Help have to maintain a silent stoicism, even when their white employers in 1960s Mississippi mutter about “the colored situation,” even when they blurt out the most ignorant and hatefully callous remarks. (“They carry different diseases than we do.”) The Help is that rare civilrights melodrama to tell its story from the point of view of faceless, almost anonymous black Southerners who lived through that era. It’s based on Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel about black maids in 1960s Jackson, Miss., the white women they worked for and the new college graduate determined to make a name for herself by writing a book told from the maids’ point of view. Emma Stone (Easy A) is plucky, self-possessed Skeeter, fresh out of Ole Miss and ready to take a job — any job — at the Jackson Journal to get the experience she’ll need to work in New York. She is just plain enough to stand out in her circle of well-to-do debutantes-turned-housewives. But she has no interest in following them into matrimony. “You eggs are dying,” her mother (Allison Janney) drawls. “Would it kill you to go

on a date?” Skeeter turns her household cleaning column into an excuse to chat with her friends’ maids. That’s where she figures out a pitch to make to a New York publisher (Mary Steenburgen). She’ll get the maids to tell their story. “Nobody ever really talks about it down here,” Skeeter says. Mercifully, actor-turneddirector Tate Taylor steps back from the precipice of precious and focuses, as Skeeter does, on these maids. Merely talking to Skeeter about their lives was illegal under the “Jim Crow” racial subjugation laws of Mississippi. But the long-suffering Aibileen (Viola Davis, wonderful) and too-sassy-tosuffer-forever Minny (Octavia Spencer, in a break-out performance) start to talk. And talk. And through them, we see Jackson’s social register laid bare. Hilly is a true terror, but she doesn’t realize the greatest threat to her reign is right under her nose, refilling her coffee cup. The maids watch and listen and judge. The cute struggles with the

condemnable in this script as we learn how maids were handed down like house slaves (and kept from pursuing a living elsewhere), how maids sorrowfully passed their careers down to their daughters and how delicate a dance they had to perform to appeal to the racist sensibilities of some of their employers. “You cooking white food? You taste it with a different spoon.” Davis and Spencer come to embody the circumscribed and self-censored worlds these women inhabit, with Minny having to explain the rules to her bubbly, lonely and racial barrier-breaking new employer — Celia. Aibileen carries a sorrow that is only partly built from a lifetime of servitude. There are distractions, e.g. Skeeter’s dating efforts (men, in general, are non-entities here). Sissy Spacek does an adorable, crowd-pleasing turn as Hilly’s dotty and somewhat less racist mother. And Cicely Tyson is seen, in flashbacks, as Skeeter’s housekeeper and nanny, who deserves credit for making her the woman she has become. Despite its occasional cloying moments, The Help transcends its comfort-food-forOprah’s-Book-Club wrapping to get at something deeper, the gray in a story that seems so far removed as to be utterly black and white. And Davis and Spencer give faces and fully fleshed out lives to women who must have been more than what they did for a living as The Help.

There’s been plenty written about how actress Octavia Spencer inspired the character of the sullen but sometimes side-splitting maid Minny Jackson in the novel and upcoming movie The Help. Spencer is the longtime friend of the film’s writer-director Tate Taylor, who is the even longer-time friend of Help author Kathryn Stockett. Taylor introduced the two women, and Spencer’s brass and class became Minny’s essence. The Help, which opened Wednesday, portrays three unlikely cohorts who expose scandals and civil-rights injustices in 1960s-era Jackson, Miss. And even though the film marks Taylor’s first big studio job, he practically demanded the casting of Spencer, making for a rarity: the person inspiring a novel’s major character actually playing her on the screen. Ever since a preview last April at the film-exhibitors convention CinemaCon, many in Hollywood have been buzzing that performances by stars Viola Davis, Emma Stone and Spencer will carry them all into Oscar season. So, for a fresh perspective on the Spencer story, it was time to dig a little deeper. “She’d pass up a state dinner with the Obamas to watch a ‘Little House on the Prairie’ marathon,” spilled Taylor recently, with author Stockett at his side, chuckling and nodding in acknowledgment. In a separate interview, Spencer confessed, “That would be true,” adding a slightly embarrassed smile. “You know why I like ‘Little House on the Prairie’ so much? My mom and dad separated, they never divorced, when I was really young. I think my mom was pregnant with my younger sister, and Michael Landon always played these wonderful dads. He was like my father figure, kind of what I wanted my dad to be.” Spencer was born in Montgomery, Ala., attended Auburn University and was introduced to Taylor

If The Help is a hit and those big-paying parts roll in, she may end up with her own little house. “A little house in Alabama and a little condo in the (San Fernando) Valley,” Spencer said. “That’s the dream.”
