A Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervision and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continuing collection efforts. The following bankruptcies declared by Calhoun County residents were recorded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Alabama last week:

Continued from Page 1A — with no traffic to interfere with production. And Faulk said she’s in contact with someone who seems interested in filming here, though she won’t reveal details. “It’s in the very early stages,” Faulk said. Of course, this is show business, in which a lot of things never get beyond the “early stages.” If a big Alabama movie were to film at McClellan, it would be very nearly a first. Most of the big Alabama movies everyone knows — Fried Green Tomatoes, Forrest Gump, Crazy in Alabama, Sweet Home Alabama — were filmed in other states. The upcoming TV show Hart of Dixie is set in Bluebell, a fictional Alabama town complete with hot single people, alligators and plantation houses. Faulk said it’s filmed on a California backlot. “They never even considered filming here,” Faulk said. She said the show is on a tight budget, but if it’s successful, they might be persuaded to branch out. There’s more at stake than just a few one-time movie-production jobs. One big movie success could drive years of tourism. Faulk said there are still people who come to visit the Whistle Stop Café of Fried Green Tomatoes fame. It’s in Georgia. Big Fish was filmed in Montgom-

But the iconic shots of the film, Faulk said, were from a set on private property that isn’t open to visitors. Faulk said the Film Office isn’t just waiting for the next big fish to bite. They’re landing smaller independent films like Aster and October Baby, which you’ve never heard of because they launch in coming months. They’re also promoting auditions for the next season of the reality dating show Sweet Home Alabama. This season’s Alabama belle? She grew up in Tennessee.
Bypassing Anniston? Bruce Parnell was doing just fine selling mattresses from a former video store on South Quintard. But he’s pulling up stakes and moving to Oxford. The reason? Veteran’s Memorial Parkway. “I figured that once they got the
bypass up and running, business would slow down,” Parnell said. “So I moved to Oxford, over near the high school.” Parnell owns Mattress Mattress, formerly of Quintard Avenue, and a number of other mattress stores in Alabama and Florida, and he says business is fine despite the state of the economy. But when he and his landlord couldn’t see eye-to-eye on the terms of a new lease, he decided he’d rather switch — to Oxford — than fight about it. A key factor in his decision was Veterans Memorial Parkway, a multimillion-dollar connector that lets people drive from Golden Springs to McClellan without encountering the venerable downtown Anniston shopping district. The parkway is supposed to sweeten the pot for potential investors in the former military base, but some have argued that it could lessen traffic on Quintard enough to harm businesses. Originally titled the Eastern Bypass, the city came up with the “parkway” name to defuse critics who were also calling it Bypass Anniston. Still, says Parnell, even if traffic counts on Quintard slowed, that might not be all bad. “If they had less traffic, people might be more likely to see the store and stop,” he said. “The bypass could help. I just don’t know.” But Parnell knows one thing for sure: There’s a lot of traffic in Oxford now, and will be in the future. That’s a tough reputation to beat.
