Powerful stories in ‘Separate Kingdoms’ Separate Kingdoms by Valerie Laken; Harper Perennial, 2011; 224 pages; $14.99
BY CHARLENE HARRIS Special to The Star
Valarie Laken, the Pushcart Prize winner for Dream House, has added yet another book to her résumé: Separate Kingdoms. Separate Kingdoms is a collection of short stories built on tales of loss and achievement for her characters. The Chicago Tribune heralded it as “fine craftsmanship and powerful insight,” and on this we can agree. It is an inflexible, lovely book about very mortal types. It is a flawless assembly of how loss affects a person and those around them. Separate Kingdoms is separated by an ocean, and takes place in both the United States and Russia. It shows that an ocean can’t cut off the commonality of humanity, that all people identify with pain and regret. Being in these two locations was the best part for someone who grew up during the Cold War, when Russia and the United States were sworn enemies. Laken has chosen to parallel
the two countries and was right on the money in the descriptions of her personalities in this versatile novel. Any one of us could be affected by any of the maladies, and forced to live the lives of those she has written into this short-story collection. Laken is a writer of great compassion and empathy, and has the power to make one feel the hurt of the patrons in Separate Kingdoms. She takes you on a trip through your mind that may not be so pleasant at times. Illness has a way of making people uncomfortable, but Laken boldly places herself right in the center of the chaos. The chaos is the emotionally and physically maimed mingled with the poignancy and grief the characters feel as they attempt to live with — instead of living against — their

various handicaps. Separate Kingdoms is a reflection of Laken’s talent as an author. It shows wonderful intelligence on her part to speak for those in need, and the reader hears it. It takes much more than practical prose to do what this collection has done. It has taken words and made them tangible in your mind. It is a powerful collection of short stories mapping the partitions and crashes between countries and philosophies, relations and strangers, associates and eccentrics looking for love. At first read, Separate Kingdoms is shaped like any other collection of short stories, but read further and you will begin to notice the small nuances that make it what it is: A complex collection that runs deeper than you first thought. It will make a lovely gift, since it was a gift to read it. Charlene Harris is a freelance writer in Anniston.
Dick Cheney book controversy heats up By Carolyn Kellogg Los Angeles Times
“There are gonna be heads exploding all over Washington,” Dick Cheney told NBC Monday night. The subject in question? The former vice president’s book In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir. The book officially hit bookstore shelves Tuesday. In the book, CHENEY Cheney defends his support of waterboarding and the war in Iraq. “I was a big advocate of pursuing controversial policies in order to keep the country safe, and obviously the critics extracted their pound of flesh for that,” he told Matt Lauer in an interview on the Today show.

Sony’s Xperia fails to impress Mobile gaming has been on a steep rise over the past few years. Titles like Angry Birds have sold in the hundreds of millions. This popularity has attracted people who wouldn’t normally play games. Sony hopes to capitalize on this by releasing a PlayStation Portable-styled phone Chris that uses a controller Pittman called Xperia PLAY. iSpy The device looks like a thicker version of the standard Android phone released in the past year. The obvious addition to the formula is a slide-out controller that mimics the layout of a PlayStation Portable. All of the standard PlayStation buttons are accounted for, including a touchpad and shoulder triggers. The Xperia PLAY fits in the hands very well. The phone is a little bit bulkier than most, due to the added pullout controller, but that doesn’t interfere with playing or interrupt the action in any way. I tested Crash Bandicoot on the device, as I figured a complete PlayStation port could be done. And for the most part, I was right. The game looked almost identical to the original. The rest of the game lineup is robust, but the same cannot be said for its quality. Games from the Assassin’s Creed, Battlefield, Call of Duty and Splinter Cell series are available for download. Don’t expect the same gameplay as on the main consoles, though. The biggest disappointment is Manu Fernandez/Associated Press
the screen resolution of the phone. An 854 x 480 pixel resolution is paltry for a phone dedicated to bringing a handheld quality gaming experience to the table. The Xperia PLAY seems to be a stopgap device intended to keep gamers satisfied until the PlayStation Vita releases. Sony is betting its next handheld will rival the current consoles on the market. The big question lies in whether gamers even want to pay for a handheld device anymore. The rise of iPhone and Android games has certainly taken its toll on the devices from Nintendo and Sony. Nintendo just dropped the price of its Nintendo 3DS due to lackluster sales numbers. Perhaps gamers would rather pay less for a cheaper game than more for a bigger experience. After all, mobile games are best used as time wasters while out and about. They kill time perfectly while waiting on someone. Add to the fact that many Xperia PLAY games are not as impressive as much cheaper Android titles, and it’s easy to get quickly soured on this phone. The premise is strong, but the delivery is subpar. Lack of software for the Xperia PLAY takes the overall PSP-esque experience down several notches. However, the phone does have the entire Android library of games to play. Then again, so does every other phone running Google’s OS. Gamers looking for an Android phone should opt for a more recently released model and wait for the PlayStation Vita to get their fix.

Man meets machine in thrilling ‘Deus Ex’ By Lou Kesten Associated Press
If you could replace any part of your body with a more powerful mechanical substitute, where would you start? Do you get new legs that let you jump higher and run faster? New eyes that let you see through walls? Or skin implants that make you invisible for a few seconds? Adam Jensen, the hero of “Deus Ex: Human Revolution” (Square Enix, for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, $59.99; PC, $49.99), can handle any of them. He doesn’t have much choice; in the prologue, he’s critically wounded by a bomb at a lab run by his employer, Sarif Industries. Fortunately, Sarif is the military’s leading supplier of human replacement parts. And since Jensen is Sarif’s security chief, he needs to get back on his feet and hunt down those responsible for the attack. He’s already half-man/ half-machine, but you get to pick which parts of Jensen get upgraded — and your choices will affect your approach to the story. Almost every situation in “Deus Ex” can be handled in several ways. Faced with
a warehouse full of armed guards, do you kill them all or try to sneak past? Or do you look for another solution — say, hacking the security robots so they turn against the guards? In some cases, you can even try talking one of the employees into just letting you waltz right through. Whatever strategy you choose, you need the right augmentations. If you’re trigger-happy, you’re going to need a dermal armor implant. Stealthy agents will want to invest in a sound suppressor and upgrade their hacking skills. And more diplomatic types will want the “social enhancer,” which lets you read other characters’ moods and bend them to your will. I chose the sneaky path, mainly because good stealth games are much rarer than first-person shooters. And “Deus Ex” is very good, maybe the best in its subgenre since 1998’s “Metal Gear Solid.” The levels are cleverly designed with multiple routes that allow you to avoid detection; you’ll never look at an air vent the same way again. If you do get caught, you can always blast your way out. “Deus Ex” delivers all the weaponry, from stun guns to rocket launchers, that
you’d expect in a contemporary shooter. You’re never restricted to one technique; you can sneak through one level and blow up everything in the next. The major exception to this freedom comes in the battles against major villains. Here, you have to depend on firepower, which can be tricky if you’ve been focusing on building Jensen’s spy skills. These boss battles aren’t impossible, they’re just unimaginative, a disappointing concession to a tired video-game convention. While “Deus Ex” does trot out some techno-thriller cliches — Jensen’s gravelly monotone becomes comical after a few hours — its globetrotting plot is twisty enough to keep you guessing. And its primary urban hubs, in Detroit and Shanghai, offer so many intriguing side quests that you can easily double your playing time to 30-40 hours. “Human Revolution” is a prequel to 2000’s “Deus Ex,” and it has plenty of in-jokes for fans of that classic. But even if you’re unfamiliar with the original, do not skip this new chapter. It’s a worthy successor, and it’s revolutionary in its own way.

Tony Rubino, who writes “Daddy’s Home,” was living in Washington on Sept. 11 and has been involved with Jeremy’s Heroes, a charity founded on behalf of Jeremy Glick, one of the passengers killed aboard Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pa. His strip for Sept. 11, which is drawn by Gary Markstein, drew inspiration from the passengers of Flight 93, whose actions helped bring the United Airlines flight down in a Pennsylvania field instead of its likely target, the White House or the U.S. Capitol. “I went by their example and rather than reflect on something that was negative in the past, I thought ‘What is the future? What I’ve done, my particular strip for 9/11 this year, is a look forward rather than a look back,” he said. Rubino said that the cartoonists’ efforts are bound to be noticed, even among the din of anniversary coverage and programming. “The comics are different. I think it’s a chance for people to see a perspective on this anniversary that they wouldn’t see otherwise,” he said. “They’re going to get a million television programs, but this is a unique way of looking at it.”

20 questions for musician June Millington PopMatters.com McClatchy-Tribune
Play Like a Girl is a new studio album from Jean and June Millington, the founding members of Fanny. The sisters have been making music together since they were children playing ukuleles in the Philippines. Play Like a Girl is a direct result of experiences of more than 45 years since starting an all-girl band themselves — and helping other girls learn music today; mentoring, supporting, teaching and helping them organize themselves in the world of music. 1. The latest book or movie that made you cry? The Wind Journeys (Ciro Guerra, 2009). It’s like the “Sgt. Pepper” of musical movies, with gorgeous scenery shot in Colombia, with wild and incredibly danceable folk-accordion playing and a mystic journey as its central theme. I couldn’t believe how good it was when I discovered it completely by accident at our local library. 2. The fictional character most like you? There isn’t one. I have to say my life has been stranger than fiction, and there wasn’t one role model I ever saw who gave me the reflection of strength that I needed. Maybe Sister Luke (Gabrielle van der Mal), played by Audrey Hepburn in The Nun’s Story. She had a bit of austerity and gumption that’s actually useful for an aspiring lead guitar player. 3. The greatest album ever? Sgt. Pepper. Followed closely by Eli and the Thirteenth Confession by Laura Nyro. They both have sweeping themes with synergistic content — the center holds, and they’re musically impeccable. All those individual songs are unmatched even today. 4. Star Trek or Star Wars?
MCT
‘Play Like a Girl’ is a new studio album from June, left, and Jean Millington, founding members of Fanny. Is this a trick question? How can you choose between two types of vastness? They both opened our minds into new worlds. Oh, you forgot One Step Beyond. 5. Your ideal brain food? Coffee with a little protein. Although, someone gave me small amounts of molybdenum back in the early ‘80s. 6. You’re proud of this accomplishment, but why? Actually learning lead guitar, because I didn’t really want to do it (I preferred rhythm). And I did it at a time when that was verboten — girls weren’t supposed to play electric. But we did! I’ve never looked back. 7. You want to be remembered for ...? Being fiery and having a goal that I never gave up on; that is, playing music, and playing the way I heard and felt it. Of course that changes by definition as you get interested in different styles and techniques, but what’s always incorporated is an attitude of fearlessness — to try something new. 8. Of those who’ve come before, the most inspirational are? Stevie Wonder, Nadia Boulanger, Quincy Jones, Simone Signoret, Artemisia Gentileschi, Carole Kay and the Bandit Queen of India. 9. The creative master-
piece you wish bore your signature? The sun. It’s always recreating itself. 10. Your hidden talents ...? A capacity to love children unconditionally and laugh along with their pure innocence. And I know what they’re laughing about! If there is a god, that’s when you can see it, as you can when enjoying flowers and the smell of the sea. 11. The best piece of advice you actually followed? Look at both sides when you cross the street. Now I’d translate that into don’t text when you drive. The simplest things can kill you. 12. The best thing you ever bought, stole, or borrowed? The best thing I ever bought is my Les Paul guitar, which I had no interest in acquiring at the time. And I ignored it for maybe a year. But once I really started to play it, it owned me. It’s a late ‘50s model, and I try not to ever do anything to it. This guitar is meant to be played. 13. You feel best in Armani or Levis or ...? Depends if I’m in a canoe or on a yacht. 14. Your dinner guest at the Ritz would be? Rachel Maddow. Maybe
we’ll invite the Dalai Lama to join us for dessert. 15. Time travel: where, when and why? Back to the ‘60s in California. It was such an interesting and exciting time of my life, and the air smelled good. It was like I lived in a portal, and it was a lot of fun. Music was inventing itself, and women were, well, starting to be liberated. 16. Stress management: hit man, spa vacation or Prozac? Oh, spa vacation for sure. I could be certain there are massages and lots of good books in there, plus fizzy water. And it’s always a good idea to have snorkling with 85-degree water just off the verandah, with fresh baby coconuts on demand. (Stress? what stress?) 17. Essential to life: coffee, vodka, cigarettes, chocolate, or ...? Coffee. The rest can go. There’s something about the smell of coffee that always evokes new and good things. You can get active, or lay down with a good book. And if you can throw a sweet fresh, ripe papaya in the mix, you’ve got it made in the shade. 18. Environ of choice: city or country, and where on the map? Country, but with a hip city nearby like where I am now, with five major colleges. This way, there’s always art coming in, along with young energy with new ideas. And if we could introduce the sound of the sea ... heaven. 19. What do you want to say to the leader of your country? Don’t you ever, ever think of giving up. We’re behind you all the way. And I love that you’re biracial. 20. Last but certainly not least, what are you working on now? Moving the Institute for the Musical Arts forward, and re-connecting with and releasing our own music.

Beyonce’s record sales for ‘4’ have been lower than her previous albums.
Beyonce sees bump in album, single sales By Gerrick D. Kennedy Los Angeles Times
Beyonce’s revelation — both on the red carpet and during her performance — that she and her husband, Jay-Z, are expecting their first child undoubtedly stole the show at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. The big warm-and-fuzzy moment also has provided the diva with a major bump, pun intended, on record sales. After telling the audience that she wanted them “to feel the love that’s growing inside,” she dived into “Love on Top,” a cut from her album 4. The performance boosted the non-single into the iTunes top 5, while her actual single, “Best Thing I Never Had,” is currently languishing at No. 23. The album has also made its way back into the top 10 on iTunes, coincidentally landing at the No. 4 spot. Despite being herald by critics, the disc has struggled a bit commercially. The album’s first two singles, “Best Thing I Never Had” and “Run the World (Girls),” have failed to take off like “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” “Irreplaceable,” “Crazy in Love” and other huge hits. The album has so far logged fewer than 700,000 units, according to Nielsen Soundscan, since its June release — a sluggish number when compared to the record-breaking tallies that Adele and Lady Gaga have enjoyed with their recent releases.

There, Wayne showcased two of the album’s least inspired songs: the Auto-Tuned “How To Love,” which features a syrupy melody manufactured specifically to win back the many fans of 2008’s “Lollipop”; and “John,” essentially an expansion of Rick Ross’ “I’m Not A Star,” the opening track from last year’s well-regarded “Teflon Don” album. Maroon 5 making moves thanks to ‘Jagger,’ ‘Voice’ By Mesfin Fekadu Associated Press
Before joining NBC’s The Voice, Adam Levine says some folks assumed he was some “singing bimbo that likes girls.” So he’s grateful to the show for providing a bit of clarification on his image. “It was a nice opportunity to show my personality — that I have a brain,” said the lead singer of Maroon 5. “It’s also true: I am a bimbo and I like to sing and I like girls, but there’s more to my personality; it’s a little more dynamic than that, and I like to show that on the show. It’s cool.” The singing competition — which also features Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton as music coaches — was a hit in its first season. The four coaches chose teams of eight after an audition process that allowed them only to hear the contestant’s voice, but not to see them.
Once teams were whittled down to one contestant for each coach, Levine’s mentee — the crooner Javier Colon — was crowned the winner. The Voice helped showcase the playful and sillier side of the heavily-inked Levine. Band keyboardist Jesse Carmichael says Levine’s presence on the show “was so positive for him definitely as a person, but for us as a band, too.” Now, the group is taking advantage of the buzz: They recently released “Moves Like Jagger,” which features Voice co-star Aguilera, and it will be the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 charts Thursday. It also hit No. 1 on the European and Canadian charts. The dance song is a departure for the pop-rockers, and they say they’re rushing to get a new album out this fall. In the past, the group released an album every three or four years. “We’re going to make it as quickly as we can (and) ride this wave of momentum,” Levine said in an
interview last week. “That’s too long,” he explained about past breaks between records. “We can’t do that anymore. We’ve got to keep moving.” The Grammy-winning group’s 2002 debut, Songs About Jane, sold 4.7 million units and they followed that with another multiplatinumseller, 2006’s It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. Last fall, they dropped their third album, the gold-selling Hands All Over” which was rereleased to feature “Jagger.” On Maroon 5’s upcoming album, the group says they want to take a new direction. “Jagger” was produced Benny Blanco and Shellback, hitmakers for acts like Katy Perry, Ke$ha and Britney Spears. “We can definitely stand to take more risks,” Levine said. “It’s awesome to have that little feeling in your stomach like, ‘Oh, this isn’t safe, this isn’t normal for us’ ... (and) if you don’t do that, I think you’re dead a as band.” The second season of The Voice premieres after the Super Bowl on Feb. 5.

AmStar is serious about new cell phone policy If you are a big moviegoer or YouTube crawler, chances are you are one of just under 2.5 million people who have seen The Alamo Drafthouse cinema’s viral video of the voicemail they received from a customer comBobby plaining about Bozeman getting kicked Pop out of the theCultured ater for using their phone. Warning: The caller isn’t very happy and uses a lot of foul language, but if you haven’t seen it, go to YouTube now, watch it (you can find a link at www.BamaEscapes.com) and come back. Now, I wouldn’t go so far as to call texting an epidemic or
anything; that certainly isn’t the case. However, like talking, it only takes one person to distract a large portion of a movie audience. Talking, though, has always been an issue for movie theaters as long as they have been around; texting is a relatively new problem spurred on by the rise in use of smartphones in the last few years. With a smartphone especially, the screens are very bright and can be a huge distraction. You may have noticed that even our local AmStar 12 in Oxford has recently adopted a zero-tolerance policy with cell phones, having stewards come in and give an announcement to the crowd about the policy, going beyond the typical onscreen announcement. “As a consumer, it makes my blood boil,” said Eric Kullander,
the regional director who oversees the AmStar 12 in Oxford. “’Cause everyone’s attention goes right to the light. It’s a complete distraction to everyone and we said, ‘you know, we’ve got to take control of this.’” As this is such a new problem, theaters really have to go on the offense to set the standard for proper manners when dealing with this issue. Idly checking Facebook, Twitter or just the time is rude. In fact, it’s very rude. I have more understanding toward parents who have left their children with sitters or doctors and such, but if you think you might be getting a call, you can always put it on vibrate and step outside or sit in the back so people behind you don’t have a smartphone screen flashing a few feet in front of them.
Kullander said the managers aren’t out to get customers; they’re just trying to create a good atmosphere for everyone. “We’re just trying to inform all our guests that we recognize that PDAs are here and they are a part of people’s life,” he said. “We want them to recognize that people are here to see a movie and [the phones] are a distraction.” And atmosphere is a huge deal, because at the end of the day, that’s what movie theaters sell. They sell the experience of watching a movie with the comfortable seats and the cool air and the huge screen. Other theaters even sell more specialty items, such as meals and alcoholic drinks, like The Alamo Drafthouse, the Capri in Montgomery or the Bama Theater in Tuscaloosa, which has a weekly
art house showing. And they also sell the darkness and the silence that comes with the theaters. Parents should understand the need to get away to a place that quiet, dark and cool after being with their kids all the time. Kullander says the zero-tolerance policy has accomplished its purpose so far. “I’d grade it as a huge success,” said Kullander. “You can be sure that we are enforcing it to everyone. We’ve seen a number in the reduction of people asked to leave. This is one of our top priorities, taking back the auditoriums.” Bobby Bozeman is The Star’s entertainment columnist. ‘Top Gun’ Blu-ray flies to the top of new releases By Rick Bentley McClatchy Newspapers
Two of this week’s new releases might make you feel nostalgic. Top Gun, Grade B: The action film/romance starring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis is being rereleased to mark the 25th anniversary. It’s been a quarter of a decade but Top Gun will still have you feeling the need for speed. The action part of the film has to do with an elite group of pilots who compete to be the best in their class and earn the title of “Top Gun.” Cruise and McGillis provide the romance as a hot-shot test pilot and a civilian instructor who do their own form of flying. The Blu-ray includes a six-part documentary on the making of the film, a behind-the-scenes featurette, a survival training featurette, interviews with Tom Cruise, four music videos and commentary by producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Prom, Grade B: A group of teenagers get ready for their high school prom. From its high school setting to cast of typical teenage heroes and villains, it’s High School Musical without all the impromptu dance numbers. What it has that HSM doesn’t is the smart script by Katie Wech, which should resonate with young and older moviegoers. Whether you went to prom, didn’t go, or just hate the whole idea, there’s someone to relate to in this light romantic comedy. Director Joe Nussbaum and Wech keep the movie

Yin Chang plays an emotionally divided senior who must decide between love and career, while the young athlete played by Nolan Sotillo struggles with the pull between his best friend and the girl he likes. Running Wilde: Season One, Grade D: An environmentalist (Keri Russell) agrees to move in with a superficial millionaire (Will Arnett). Despite the first-rate talent, this FoxOX series lasted less than one season. So if you missed any or all of it, here’s your chance to get caught up with the comedy. Russell brought a lot of charm and Arnett provided plenty of silliness, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the bad writing. ‘Utopia’ beautifully shot, but lacks surprise By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel
In Seven Days in Utopia, a mild-mannered young golfer has a mild meltdown in the middle of a tournament. That’s followed by seven days of perspective-patching among mild-mannered Godfearing folk in rural Texas. Faith and “fore” walk hand in hand — sort of — in this soft-centered faith-based drama starring Lucas Black of Friday Night Lights, Get Low and Jarhead. Based on David L. Cook’s selfhelp novel, Golf’s Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia, first-time director Matt Russell’s film follows aspiring pro Luke Chisholm (Black) as he explodes in a contained fury in a televised tourney where he had hoped to earn his pro tour card. We’ve met the somewhat domineering dad (Joseph Lyle Taylor) who still caddies for his son and caused Luke to snap. We then follow Luke as he flees the spotlight and the embarrassment of his worst day on the course, turning up at a ranch in a small town where he figures nobody will know who he is. Robert Duvall is the sage old rancher, Johnny Crawford, a fellow who enters Luke’s life on horseback. He takes the golfer in (Luke has dinged his car) and makes him ponder the great questions of golf — “How could a game have such an affect on a man’s soul?” Luke takes life lessons from Johnny, lessons that can be applied on the course. He swaps wisecracks with the locals. And he meets the fetching Sarah (Deborah Ann Woll), who is “trainin’ to be a horse whisperer.” Oscar winner Melissa Leo and wonderful character actress Kathy Baker are here to lend, well, character. But mostly, this is about Johnny playing golf guru to Luke — making him visualize and “paint” (literally) the shot he visualizes, ordering him to learn bal-

But ask 40 golfers about their worst tantrum on the course, and 35 of them will top this milder-thanmild one. In flashbacks, we see the (mildly) domineering dad

who set the stage for Luke’s bad day and get a sense of the (mild, again) pressures the kid is under. Perhaps that explains the lack of heat in the meltdown. The movie opens with a
Bible quotation — Isaiah 30:21, “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” But the film seems to lose its nerve about this, too, soft-selling religion as it rubs rough edges off the characters. Seven Days is beautifully shot — all rosy-hued back-lit backswings. And Black, an avid golfer, makes a very convincing pro. The film’s charm comes from its lighter moments. Duvall and Black have a warm mentor-student rapport. But Seven Days in Utopia (Cook co-wrote the script with Russell and Central Florida
screenwriter Sandra Thrift, among others) lacks surprises, from Johnny’s “dark” past to his own life altering mistakes. And it lacks much in the line of tension, as we work our way right down the middle of the fairway toward the predictable “big game” (tournament) finish. It’s not a sport that lends itself to great filmmaking, but as we saw with Tin Cup and The Greatest Game Ever Played, there are ways to finesse that — with color, with humor, with creative shotmaking. This one treats its subject as if it’s a tap-in for par, and thus, most of the best clubs were left in the bag.

‘The Debt’ a classy, well-made thriller By Christy Lemire
THE DEBT HHH
Associated Press
Classy, solid and well-acted, The Debt is a rare bit of meaty, intelligent filmmaking during the ordinarily dreary final days of summer. With a cast that includes Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson and a tremendous Jessica Chastain, led by Shakespeare in Love director John Madden, it seems it would be hard to go wrong. Matthew Vaughn, the director of Layer Cake and KickAss, co-wrote the script. It’s smart and tense but also frustrating; it almost feels too safe, too conservative and reserved in the way it hits its notes. Still, everything about it is so respectable, you may feel engrossed in the moment, yet forget about it soon afterward. A remake of a 2007 Israeli film of the same name, The Debt begins in 1997 with three former Mossad agents being heralded at the launch of a new book that details their most important mission from 30 years earlier. They

Ciarán Hinds, left, and Helen Mirren are shown in a scene from the espionage thriller ‘The Debt.’ are Rachel (Mirren), her ex-husband, Stephan (Wilkinson), and their former colleague and friend, David (Ciaran Hinds). The former husband and wife are parents of the author, and the glances they exchange signal that they’re not
too comfortable with being celebrated as heroes all these years later. The startling fate that befalls David also provides an early moment of foreboding. Flashback to 1965. The exceedingly capable Rachel (Chastain)
and the strong, stoic David (Sam Worthington) are pretending to be a young married couple trying to have a baby in order to get close to an East Berlin doctor named Dieter Vogel (a chilling Jesper Christensen), a Nazi war criminal known notoriously during World War II as the Surgeon of Birkenau. Under the leadership of the swaggering Stephan (Martin Csokas), the team is to kidnap Vogel and bring him back to Israel to stand trial. Despite their training and focus, this does not exactly go as planned, and the ways in which the agents fail are more interesting than the build-up of watch-
ing them function in high gear. Madden proves himself surprisingly adept at crafting this kind of brainy, brawny action thriller with a mixture of well-placed silences and visceral camerawork. As it jumps back and forth in time, The Debt explores the conflict between expectations and reality, intellect and emotions, truth and regret. The needless romance further bogs down the third act, which grows unfortunately messy as it tries to tie up various loose ends and satisfy the audience’s need for justice. Still, the performances are consistently strong, especially from Chastain in a far more grounded, muscular role than we’ve seen from her this year in The Tree of Life and The Help. Meanwhile, Mirren can do tough-but-vulnerable in her sleep; these two are the most plausible duo of the three. As exciting and confident as Csokas is, it’s hard to believe he’ll morph into Wilkinson eventually, and Worthington-to-Hinds is the most baffling of all.

ZZ Top plays at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla., on Sept. 16, 2010. A ZZ Top tribute album will be released Oct. 11.
Tributes pour out in ZZ Top tunes By Kevin Amorim Newsday
Wyclef Jean, ZZ Top fan? Apparently. Jean is among the artists paying homage to “that little ol’ band from Texas” on an upcoming album, A Tribute From Friends. The 11 tracks, out Oct. 11, feature classic ZZ Top tunes redone by Jean (“Rough Boy”) and the likes of Nickelback (“Legs”), Filter (“Gimme All Your Lovin””) and Wolfmother (“Cheap Sunglasses”). “We were told there was going to be a ZZ Top tribute album a while ago and logically asked, ‘Who are we paying tribute to?’ Then we found out that a bunch of great artists were paying tribute to us and we were in disbelief,” the band — Billy F. Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard — said in a statement. “For the past 40 or so years, all we’ve done is get out there and crank it and try to have a good time while doing so. To a great extent, we’ve succeeded since we’re still having a good time so that would be reward enough for ‘the same three guys playing the same three chords.’ “Now comes A Tribute From Friends and we’re so delighted that our music resonates with these great musicians whom we so admire.” Hmmm. Well, there’s also a Daughtry take on the album — “Waitin’ for the Bus”/”Jesus Just Left Chicago.” With friends like him ...

Lights, cameras, autumn Muppets, penguins, vampires lead fall film lineup tion, but I’m a filmmaker because of Footloose. I think I’m actually a better man because of Footloose.” Peter Jackson shares similar childhood fondness for Tintin, on which The Lord of the Rings filmmaker is a producer. New Zealander Jackson said that Belgian writer Herge’s stories of intrepid young reporter Tintin are as popular there as they are in Europe. But like most Americans, Spielberg never heard of Tintin until he was in his 30s, only discovering Herge’s storybooks after French critics compared the character to Indiana Jones when 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark came out. “Indiana Jones is a chiseled character and I guess has a different kind of tenacity,” said Spielberg, whose film stars Jamie Bell in a performance-capture role as Tintin, with computer animation providing the final look of the characters. “Tintin is much more of a Boy Scout. He’s a reporter, but he begins by reporting a story that is always about a mystery that needs to be solved or a puzzle that needs solving, and he winds up becoming the story. You’re not supposed to do that, I think, in journalism. You’re not supposed to become the story.” Spielberg also directs the live action War Horse, which follows the travels of a horse that journeys from rural England through the battlefields of Europe during World War I. Other films for the fall and holidays include Tower Heist, with Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy orchestrating a revenge raid on a swindling tycoon; Arthur Christmas, an animated adventure about a
youth (voiced by James McAvoy) who delves into Santa’s high-tech operation; Real Steel, starring Hugh Jackman as an ex-fighter training a robot boxer in a world where machines have taken over in the ring; In Time, featuring Justin Timberlake on the run in a future where people scramble for time allotments to stay alive; Immortals, with Henry Cavill and Freida Pinto in a clash of ancient Greek gods and heroes; and The Big Year, casting Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson as rivals in a bird-watching competition. Also, Dream House, starring Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz as a couple whose new home holds terrible secrets; Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, with Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock in a drama about a boy convinced that his father left a final message before his death in the Sept. 11 attacks; New Year’s Eve, an ensemble tale set on the last night of the year that features Halle Berry, Robert De Niro, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Biel and Hilary Swank; The Sitter, with Jonah Hill as the world’s worst babysitter; Young Adult, starring Charlize Theron as a writer reconnecting with hometown classmates; and Contagion, tracing a deadly virus as it sweeps around the globe. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, Contagion has an all-star ensemble led by Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Marion Cotillard and Jude Law. Shunning Hollywood conventions, Soderbergh aimed for a fact-based thriller that would authentically capture how authorities and the general public might respond to a viral threat.
While Soderbergh wants to put audiences on alert, the Muppets just want to put on a show. The Muppets features Jason Segel and Amy Adams as a couple helping to reunite Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and their friends for a telethon to save the Muppet theater from the clutches of an evil oilman (Chris Cooper). Also a co-writer of the movie, Segel said that much as he loves his R-rated comedies, he’s always been drawn to the wholesome message of the Muppets. “I have a real affinity for things that are good, that are nice and are Mo teaching kids to be ne yb kind to each other,” al Segel said. “It’s really l easy to get a laugh making fun of somebody, and I think too readily people rely on that. And the Muppets never did. Their whole message is about kindness.”

Footloose director Craig Brewer was 13 when he saw the 1984 original. It was a seminal movie for Brewer, whose credits include the acclaimed Hustle & Flow, and it bothered him when the remake was announced and people asked, “why would you want to do some tripe like Footloose?” “Are you kidding? LOS ANGELES — Brad Pitt reinvents baseball, while Kristen Stewart acquires a taste for blood. George Clooney runs for president, while Meryl Streep impersonates Margaret Thatcher. Leonardo DiCaprio puts America under surveillance, while Robert Downey Jr. faces a criminal mastermind. Variety abounds in Hollywood’s fall and holiday seasons as studios pack the schedule with Oscar hopefuls, action flicks, comedy and music-themed tales, as well as a family lineup that brings the return of the Muppets, dancing penguins, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Puss in Boots. Downey’s back in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows as the great detective and his ally Watson (Jude Law) meet archenemy Professor Moriarty. Clooney directs and stars as a White House aspirant in The Ides of March, with Ryan Gosling as an aide who stumbles onto disturbing campaign secrets. Stewart reunites with vampire lover Robert Pattinson and werewolf pal Taylor Lautner in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1, the next-to-last chapter in their supernatural saga. Split into two movies, the final book in Stephenie Meyer’s series holds major life changes for Stewart’s Bella, which we won’t divulge here for sake of the

The season also brings two films directed by Steven Spielberg, the globetrotting story The Adventures of Tintin and the World War I saga War Horse; Martin Scorsese’s 3-D family film Hugo, about an orphan boy who lives in the walls of a Paris train station; Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, with Tom Cruise’s elite team going rogue after an attack on the Kremlin; the comedy Jack and Jill, with Adam Sandler in dual roles as a family guy and his pesky sister; and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, an adaptation of the Swedish best-seller starring Daniel Craig as a journalist aided on an investigation by a deeply troubled computer genius (Rooney Mara). Real people provide intriguing stories as Streep seeks to add to her record 16 Oscar acting nominations, playing the British prime minister in The Iron Lady; Pitt takes over the Oakland A’s front office as pioneering baseball strategist Billy Beane in Moneyball; and DiCaprio takes on the sweeping life of FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover in J. Edgar, directed by Clint Eastwood. The film spans decades, covering the bureau’s successes taking down gangsters in the 1930s, Hoover’s paranoia about communists and civil-rights leaders, and questions about his sexual preferences. “He was surrounded in mystery. Jerry Lewis: MIA at this year’s MDA Telethon By Frazier Moore Associated Press
NEW YORK — No one would sniff at all the dollars Jerry Lewis raised for muscular dystrophy: a couple of billion during his 45-year reign as host of the MDA Telethon. But what kind of TV did he offer in exchange? The short answer: Jerry put on a show like no other. Labor Day this year promises to be bland by comparison, with the 85-year-old Lewis now banished from the annual rite he built from scratch and molded in his image. As if deflated by the absence of its larger-than-life host, The 46th Annual MDA Labor Day Telethon will fill just six hours (Sunday from 6 p.m. to midnight in each time zone; check local listings for station), rather than the grueling 21 1/2-hour endurance contest that Lewis used to churn through with his viewers in tow. On this year’s broadcast (which, ironically, will no longer be actually airing on Labor Day), a quartet of lightweights are standing in for Jerry: Nigel Lythgoe (So You Think You Can Dance), Nancy O’Dell (Entertainment Tonight), Alison Sweeney (The Biggest Loser) and Jann Carl (billed as “an Emmy-winning journalist”). Celebrities will include Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Antebellum, Richie Sambora and Jordin Sparks. It may be entertaining. It may spur contributions. But as a media event, this year’s telethon can hardly match the display of wretched excess Jerry Lewis guaranteed, especially in his epic, unbridled prime. “Jerry is a ferociously contradictory personality, and that’s what makes him fascinating to watch,” says satirist-actor-writer Harry Shearer, a Jerry-watcher for a half-century. He noted just two of Lewis’ clashing identities: “the inner 9-year-old, set loose” and the would-be deep thinker “who

Entertainers Dean Martin, left, and Jerry Lewis appear together on Lewis’s annual telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Las Vegas, Nev., on Sept. 7, 1976. Martin’s surprise appearance reunites the comedy duo after 20 years. Labor Day this year promises to be bland by comparison, with the 85year-old Lewis now banished from the annual rite he built from scratch and molded in his image. fancies himself something of an autodidact.” “It all makes for psychodrama of a high order,” Shearer marvels. Year after year, Lewis bounced between the polarities of smarmy sentimentalism and badgering lunacy as if in a weightless environment. He put his multiple identities on raw display, each constantly jostling for the spotlight. Hear him on a circa-1970s telethon introducing singer Julius LaRosa with syntax-butchering effusiveness as “the kind of human being that is wonderful
to get close to and near, and then you pray that it’s contagious” and as “what the literal translation of the word ‘professional’ means,” in possession of “probably the best singing voice I think anyone has ever heard, when you listen to the heart that goes into it.” It was fascinating, ridiculous, cringe-worthy and spellbinding to see how Jerry held court for the parade of entertainers, the checks-bearing civic leaders and corporate sponsors, and the adorable, afflicted kids. The Jerry Lewis telethon was a reality show decades before the
term or genre had been invented. It was video retailing, years before QVC. It was round-the-clock TV companionship long before cable news and the Weather Channel. For nearly a full day, it was a spectacle of show-biz glitz, hearttugging emotion and suspense: Would Jerry make it to the end without unraveling? Would the level of pledges do justice to his efforts at soliciting them? There was a perfect symbiosis of the telethon and Lewis. He made muscular dystrophy as big a star as he had once been. Meanwhile, aligning himself with the search for its cure gave him the gravitas he had always sought. He branded the disease with himself, and vice versa. He was not only the host of the telethon and chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (a job he would hold for 60 years), but the central figure in a massive enterprise as the self-styled avenging angel of a dread disease. The contradictions, though, were legion, breathtaking to behold. Shearer covered the 1976 telethon during its heyday for Film Comment magazine. “The telethon combines the hysterical mystique of the (Las Vegas) Strip superstar with equally hysterical desperation of the downtown lounge act,” he wrote. “It mixes the glib disinterest of a TV star taping a thirty-second public-service spot with the glib agony of a comedian on a crusade.” There was the unresolvable question of Lewis’ motives — he has famously refused to say why he poured so much of his life into MDA. How much of what he did was prompted by humanitarian urges? How much is explained by the voracious appetites of an attention hog? And how to explain the choice of theme songs by Lewis for his righteous cause: the piteousness of “Smile (When Your Heart Is Aching),” and, of course, the riotously inappropriate “You’ll Never Walk Alone” with which Lewis, overcome by emotion, ended

each telethon, daring his audience to consider it a cruel joke. Lewis found a perfect counterbalance for his excesses and vanities in the purity and urgent need of “his” kids. Everything he did he was doing in their service, which, in his mind, absolved him of his carte blanche life-or-death extravagance. And it made him, at last, a success on TV. He was a comediansinger-writer-actor-director-producer-movie star who, after splitting with his partner Dean Martin in the mid-1950s, had failed to match his other triumphs with any real television inroads. But on the telethon each year, for 21 1/2 hours, he was the unquestioned boss of the Love Network. It’s not as if his TV acceptance wasn’t a mixed blessing, as Shawn Levy observed in his Lewis biography, King of Comedy. On the one hand, Lewis was the star of a hit show “for which the nation not only dropped all else on a summer holiday weekend but actually opened its wallets.” On the other hand, Lewis could never be certain “that it was to him and not his cause that the American public was responding with its support.” This has long since become moot, all the more so since Aug. 3, when, with no elaboration, MDA announced that Lewis had “completed his run” as national chairman, and that he would not be appearing on the telethon, as promised earlier. Lewis has provided no insight into the matter. But it’s hard to imagine how wronged he must feel after bonding with the telethon for so long. As Levy writes in King of Comedy, Lewis “had conflated America’s charitable instincts with love for himself as a public figure and even as one more lonely child.” The telethon will be on again this Labor Day weekend, in some faint version of what Lewis wrought. But for those who watch, and remember it with Jerry, it is likely to feel like a lonely affair.

Good shows on cable and networks By Rich Heldenfels Akron Beacon Journal
Q: I have watched so many good programs on off-network TV channels on cable. Why is it that these channels seem to get the quality shows while the big network channels don’t? I am thinking of Lights Out, Durham County, The Killing, Sons of Anarchy and Burn Notice. Some are canceled because of a low audience, and some are too graphic for network TV. But the graphic ones could be toned down. We seem to get the same thing on ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. I am glad I have alternatives. A: I am also glad we all have alternatives. And some cable networks offer advantages to show producers, such as fewer content restrictions than on broadcast stations, which are more tightly regulated by the federal government. But it goes too far to suggest that quality shows are only on cable, or that cable is overall a home to quality programming. Cable will cancel a good show if its numbers don’t add up; Lights Out was a one-season wonder. Cable is the cradle of such bad ideas as the Real Housewives shows, Jersey Shore and classic TV shows with content edited

Emilio Rivera, left, and Adam Arkin are shown in a scene from ‘Sons of Anarchy.’ Cable shows like ‘SOA’ have fewer restrictions than shows on broadcast stations, so the content can be edgier and more graphic. out to make room for more commercials. Not too long ago a David Letterman list involved Top 10 signs you’re watching a bad cable channel. (One example: “Only has two shows about crazy people making cupcakes.”) As for broadcast TV, the fall lineups on the four networks you mentioned include Raising Hope, Bones, Modern Family, Grey’s Anatomy, The Big Bang Theory, Blue Bloods, The Good Wife, The Amazing Race, Community and The Office, among others. A good bit of variety, and a lot of quality, are possible with such shows. Some of the new programs may also prove consistently good. I will be happy as well

to see some cable shows return, but I will be looking across broadcast and cable for good shows — taking advantage of all the alternatives. Q: I am trying to locate an episode of Two and a Half Men. Charlie got involved with a “coven of witches.” He and Alan appeared to be under a spell. At the end, Evelyn arrives at Charlie’s dressed as the Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz and finds the leader of the coven there, too. Upon seeing Evelyn, the witch quickly retreats. Please help me locate this episode. My husband thinks I had a few too many and dreamed it up! A: You were not dreaming. The episode you remember is called “Hi, Mr. Horned One,” and aired during the third season of the long-running sitcom. That season is available on DVD and digital download. Two and a Half Men, by the way, begins a new season — minus Charlie Sheen, but with Ashton Kutcher — on Sept. 19. Q: Can you tell me if CBS is going to pick up
Flashpoint for the fall? A: CBS has tended to use the show as a fill-in late in the TV season or during the summer. But while it continues in production for Canadian television, a top CBS executive said recently that the show probably will not continue on CBS past its current run. (Considering all the Flashpoint questions I get, CBS may be making a mistake.) That said, Ion television has made a deal to carry old episodes of “Flashpoint” along with ones that CBS has not aired. A premiere date has not been set but an ION rep said the telecasts will begin sometime this fall. Q: I saw a show called Naked City on Retro TV and it seemed really good. Have you seen the show? Do you know anything about it? A: I have seen it, and it is a good program. The Naked City, a 1948 film, is still considered a crime classic, documentary-like and dealing with the routine of both police work and the people the police protected. An ABC series followed in 1958, airing one season as a half-hour show and then returning for a 1960-63 run as an hourlong drama. It was shot on location in New York City. John McIntire and James Franciscus were part of the cast the first season; the later cast included Horace McMahon and Paul Burke. The series was also notable for its closing line: “There are 8 million stories in the Naked City. This has been one of them.” In addition to the broadcast replays, there have been several DVD releases of episodes of the show. The original film is also available.
