‘Miss Julia Rocks the Cradle’ a hectic read Miss Julia Rocks the Cradle by Anne B. Ross; Viking, 2011; 320 pages; $25.95

Miss Julia Rocks the Cradle is the 12th story in a series starring Miss Julia. She is like Angela Lansbury in Murder She Wrote — she just cannot seem to get away from finding murder victims. Some have compared Miss Julia to Agatha Christy’s Miss Marple, and they would be right. In this story, Miss Julia has made a promise to her husband not to get involve with these things. Add a little touch of Murphy’s Law, and she has no choice — it chooses her.

Author Ann Ross made the note to her readers that, “I tried to make each book stand alone, so that a reader could start with any one of them.” And the book itself was slightly fun to read. The only problem was that it seemed other busy happenings got in the way of the murder being solved. It gets crammed into the last couple of chapters. All in all, it is a hectic read, as the character’s problems overwhelm this book. Unless you have a history with Miss

Julia, a new reader would be at a loss, regardless of Ross’s efforts to the contrary. It had the feel of a jigsaw puzzle, with the reader trying to put together relationships. There is some hilarity and lighthearted moments to be enjoyed, but they were few and far between. Skipping pages may be an option since the murder is put on hold after the initial body is found and does not rise again until later. But Ross does have her ever-faithful readers who love Miss Julia and her she-

nanigans. For a new reader who likes light mysteries, the beginning of the series would be a good place to start. Then by the 12th, you would have caught up on all the relationships. Until then, they will remain the big mystery with the murder taking second place. Miss Julia Rocks the Cradle is thankfully a speedy read with speedy characters. Everything in the novel is written in warp speed. So, if you are a follower of Ann Ross, you will enjoy this novel. If you have never read any of her books, I suggest, once again, starting fresh from the opening book of the Miss Julie series. Charlene Harris is a freelance writer in Anniston.

LOS ANGELES — Jane Lynch is no longer losing sleep over her Emmy hosting duties. “I’m OK,” the Glee star affirmed with a smile on Wednesday morning after rolling out the red carpet in front of the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. “I actually slept OK last night for the first time in about a week. I’ve been having some anxiety issues.” Lynch has been hard at work backstage on the show with longtime pals Jill and Faith Soloway from Chicago. The trio previously worked together on Annoyance Theatre’s The Real Live Brady Bunch in the 1990s.

The first-time host promised that the Chi-Town ladies would bring “kind of a Chicago feel” to Sunday’s 63rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards. “Jane is certainly going to be central to our experience,” said Academy of Television Arts and Sciences chairman John Shaffner. “I think the host of a program like this is the best friend who sits on the sofa and tells you great stories as the evening goes on and comments on the work. She’s here to keep us engaged in that way as a best friend.” Lynch has won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her performance as Sue Sylvester

on Glee and is up for another Emmy this year. She was the first choice of executive producer Mark Burnett to host this year’s show. The Apprentice and Survivor mastermind said he voted for the 50-year-old actress to lead the show even before clearing it with his alliance. “My only choice I wanted was Jane Lynch,” said Burnett. “I had not yet gotten permission to ask her from the Academy or Fox. I ran into Jane on a plane. We were both coming back from the upfronts in New York. I just went over to her and said, ‘I have no permission right now, but if I can get permission, would you host the Emmys for me?’”

This could be the year for some top actors and shows that have been on the outside looking in when it comes to the Emmys, with the biggest bridesmaids being Jon Hamm and Steve Carell. This year will probably be the year they both finally get their due, Hamm for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Drama Series for his work in Mad Men and Carell for Lead in a Comedy for his work in The Office. Carell has been shut out in the past by Alec Baldwin’s work on 30 Rock and then again most recently by Jim Parsons from CBS’ The Big Bobby Bang Theory. Bozeman Parsons is Pop nominated Cultured again, but The Big Bang Theory’s writing has suffered this last season and Parsons’ character Sheldon Cooper has increasingly become a one-note character, so don’t look for a repeat win from him. If anything, this will be Carell’s year because it’s his last chance. His character has seen better days, as has the whole show, but an emotional character finale like “Goodbye, Michael” will show enough range of character for the voters to give it to Carell. Hamm, on the other hand, sees his biggest Emmy rival, Bryan Cranston, whose show Breaking Bad is on the same network as Mad Men, off the list this year due to Breaking Bad not starting in time to qualify for the awards. Cranston has won the last three awards in his category, shutting out Hamm despite voters’ overall love for Mad Men. And did Mad Men ever pick just the perfect piece to display Hamm’s range. Episode seven of season four of Mad Men, “The Suitcase,” is not just a highlight of Hamm’s career, show creator Mat-

thew Weiner’s career or Elisabeth Moss’ career. It’s a highlight of the television as an artistic medium, and I can’t see anyone swooping in to take this award from Hamm. This year also has Fox’s Glee nominated for 12 shows, but three of those nominations all come for Outstanding Guest Performance in a Comedy Series, which Gweyneth Paltrow won for playing Holly Holiday. It’s still surprising, however, given Glee’s general slide this season, and the only real shot I think the show has of bringing home another is Chris Colfer’s portrayal of Kurt Hummel. It’s also good to see the Emmys honor HBO’s new series Game of Thrones with 13 nominations, but it’s really unfortunate that Sean Bean didn’t get a nomination for playing Edward Stark. I do think Peter Dinklage has a good shot at winning the Supporting Actor award for a Drama for playing Tyrion Lannister. I would also like to see NBC’s Friday Night Lights and Parks and Recreation come home with something. Any other year I would think Friday Night Lights would be a strong dark horse contender for Best Drama, but the field is pretty crowded with HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones, Mad Men and CBS’ The Good Wife. Also Parks and Rec has had a stellar year, and really continues to get better and better. While they’ve gotten some recognition this year, they really are underrepresented. They aren’t as underrepresented as fellow NBC comedy Community, which was gut-bustingly funny this year. It’s also garnered exactly zero nominations, which is about 10 fewer than it deserved, but there is always next year. Also, as a side note, be sure to follow me on twitter @Bozeman_Star. Rick Bragg to speak at JSU By Brett Buckner Special to The Star

Rick Bragg has made a career out of talkin’ about home. And it’s landed the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of five books including, All Over but the Shoutin’, Ava’s Man and most recently, The Most They Ever Had, in hot water with those who didn’t always appreciate his heroic depictions of life in the South. Bragg remembers being out in Seattle where he told the crowd that working people in the South — mill workers, steel workers, coal miners — were the toughest people on the planet. That’s when a woman stood up to argue, saying her people had pitched nets of fishing boats in the Pacific Northwest. “And she had a pretty good point,” Bragg said, “But if it were a fight, I’d stick with the South.” Bragg isn’t likely to face any such argument Friday for Jacksonville State University’s “Reflections and Reading: An Evening with Rick Bragg.” Born and raised just outside of Jacksonville, Bragg learned to be a storyteller by listening to the tales of his own family, which is why coming home is such a joy. “The difference is the people looking back have lived the stories I’m telling,” said Bragg, who now lives in Tuscaloosa, where he is a professor of writing at the University of Alabama. “When I talk about home, people really know … When I talk about my grandfather, who was a roofer and a whiskey maker, somewhere in that crowd will be someone who’ll say, ‘Yeah, I know he was a whiskey maker, ‘cause my daddy bought it from him.’ “I don’t get that any-

McBride to launch album with cross-country train NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Country star Martina McBride is on track to release her new album, Eleven, next month with a cross-country train ride. Bob Seger puts albums on iTunes

Just put those old records back on the shelf: Bob Seger is headed to iTunes. The rocker’s move into the digital music world started Tuesday, when his two multiplatinum concert albums — Live Bullet (1976) and Nine Tonight (1981) — were released for download at iTunes and Amazon. “We’re finally doing it,” Seger said. “We’re going digital.” With 16 studio albums — and a new one to come next year — the 66-year-old Michigan icon has only scratched the surface, and said his remaining catalog “will come out in dribs and drabs.” Seger, who has never released a boxed set, said he’ll also use iTunes to unveil songs from his sizable backlog of unreleased material. “There’s just so much of that stuff,” he said. “I’d love people to finally hear it.” In the decade since Apple launched iTunes, Seger was one of the most notable holdouts, part of a stubborn but shrinking group that still includes AC/ DC, Garth Brooks and Kid Rock. “From a business standpoint, we wanted to make sure artists are getting what we consider a fair shake,” said Ed (Punch) Andrews, who has managed Seger since the mid-1960s. And there were other challenges. “It’s probably the best delivery system ever invented, but the industry gave up a lot of quality to have that system,” Andrews said. “At some point, if this is what everybody is accepting, we know we have to keep current. But if we were going to do this, we needed to make sure it was as great as we could make it.” Live Bullet and Nine Tonight underwent more than a year of remastering to ensure top sonic quality for the downloadable versions. This week’s releases will each include a bonus track: Live Bullet will feature a version of Albert King’s “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s House,” while Nine Tonight will come with a 1980 version of Seger’s own “Brave Strangers.”

If Luke Bryan had a different birthday, he might have been a star athlete instead of a music star. He was born on July 17th. That meant he made the Georgia age cut-off to start kindergarten barely a month after his fifth birthday and was grouped in with other kids who were sometimes a year ahead of him developmentally. “I was the youngest kid in my grade,” said Bryan. “If I would’ve been held back a year, I don’t even know if I would even be doing what I’m doing, because I think I would’ve been further down the road athletically,” Bryan said in a recent interview. “I think because I wasn’t the best baseball player at the time or whatever, I kind of focused more on music and it took me down a whole ‘nother path.” Bryan, 35, is thankful for how things turned out. Last month, he released his third studio album, Tailgates and Tanlines, and it debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s country albums chart with more than 145,000 copies sold in its first week. He is also launching his first major headlining tour this week, and last week, he garnered a CMA nomination in the new artist category.

Luke Bryan shines with 3rd album

“I think he is one of the most on-fire artists right now,” said Lady Antebellum’s Dave Haywood, who co-wrote Bryan’s first No. 1 hit, “Do I,” with Bryan and Lady A’s Charles Kelley. “I think he’s our next big superstar. He’s such an entertainer.” Bryan has built on the success of his sophomore album, Doin’ My Thing, which produced three back-to-back No. 1 singles. He co-wrote eight of the 13 songs on the new album, including the lead-off single, “Country Girl (Shake It For Me).” The song was a top five hit and has registered over 1 million downloads. “I think with this one, I’ve just been able to put together a more well-rounded album than I guess than the previous two,” said Bryan. “This one, I just felt like it’s got a little bit of everything that people may want on there. I’ve got a couple songs on there that are a lot more serious than I’ve ever done, and then I’ve got some fun and light stuff.” Bryan penned the tune with Dallas Davidson, his long-time friend and one of Nashville’s most sought-after songwriters, thanks to hits written for acts like Blake Shelton and Keith Urban. Davidson and Bryan grew up in the same area of Georgia and went to college together. “Luke is at the top of his game right now,” said Davidson. “I’ve always told my

Va., with special guests Lee Brice and Josh Thompson. “I’m kind of out here trying to put the songs out there that make me a bigger artist, an artist that can hopefully headline big arenas one day and provide for a better life for my immediate family, and all this extended family I’m kind of coming to learn (about),” he said with a laugh.

The songs “Katy On A Mission” and “Lights On” are bold and catchy with their infectious melodies, while tracks like “Disappear,” with its broken beat, and “Go Away,” a dubstep ballad, delve into another territory and highlight Katy

cheap apartments, where most people are bad and the ones who are good are screwed. Film critics like to use the word “dystopian” at times like this. It’s appropriate. But then Refn punctuates his dreamlike, almost hypnotic pacing with sudden, bloody blasts of violence. You’re lulled in by the quiet seaminess of it all, and then bam — someone gets a fork in the eye. It’s the kind of brutality that’s so quick, creative and extreme, it’ll provoke bursts of nervous laughter.

You couldn’t possibly have seen that, right? Everything’s going to be OK, right? Even the Driver doesn’t really want any trouble. He wants to get in, get out and be on his way. Once trouble finds him, though, he follows his own rigid code of honor, as so many reticent badasses are wont to do. He gets involved with his neighbor down the hall, Irene (Carey Mulligan), a sweet, beautiful young woman with a sweet, beautiful young son. Then the kid’s father (Oscar Isaac) gets out of prison, and the Driver gets dragged into a scheme to help steal $1 million from a pawn shop to pay back his old debts. But Mulligan, with her effortlessly sweet presence, seems miscast here; she simply isn’t damaged enough. Similarly, Christina Hendricks goes to waste in just a couple of scenes as a mob moll who has the mis-

fortune of going along for the ride on the big heist. But then Drive offers some serious character actors in big, showy supporting performances, which offers the same sort of appealing, startling contrast as the film’s violent streak. Bryan Cranston plays a garage owner and father figure to the Driver; Ron Perlman is a volatile gangster who operates out of a drab pizza parlor; and best of all is Albert Brooks, functioning smoothly against type as a former movie producer who’s now a player in this shadowy underworld of cars and cash. Thinking back, there isn’t really all that much driving in Drive — a couple of chase scenes here and there, staged efficiently, thrillingly. It’s more about the questionable choices that drive people — and, ultimately, the ones that drive them away.

This week’s DVD releases feature a Norse god, a former princess and a New York fireman. Thor, Grade A-minus: The God of Thunder gets sent to live with humans to find his humanity. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman star. It takes three elements to make a great movie based on a comic book superhero: an actor who embraces the role, a director who treats the material with respect and fantastic visual effects. Thor has all three. The hulky/hunky Hemsworth embodies the charm, strength and power of the character. It’s as if he stepped out of the pages of the original comic book created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. And director Kenneth Branagh’s successfully makes the themes of family, honor and love accessible. The visuals are stunning. And, it’s not just the elaborate creation of Asgard or the presentation of the famous Rainbow Bridge — everything from Thor’s use of his hammer

to the desert battles is dead-on. Carrie Fisher: Wishful Drinking, Grade B-plus: Carrie Fisher offers a light and very revealing look at the major events of her life, from being the daughter of actress Debbie Reynolds to being gawked at by geeks because of her Star Wars role of Princess Leia. It’s hard to tell if Fisher’s talking about her life as some sort of public therapy or she’s just trying to entertain. Either way, it’s impossible to look away because Fisher has lived a very colorful life. Rescue Me: The Sixth Season and The Final Season, Grade A-minus: Denis Leary’s cable series about the strange characters who inhabit a New York firehouse ends the same way as it started. It mixes dark comedy with some very emotional moments through near-perfect writing. The DVD set includes the final two episodes, which manage to deal with life and death with the respect and lack of respect. Few shows have been able to take such different viewpoints and make them work together so well.

It’s exhausting, but that’s sort of the idea. I Don’t Know How She Does It is an old-fashioned spin on the manic pace of motherhood for today’s working woman. With high unemployment and those of us still working too scared to say “No” to the boss, “juggling” has become not just the norm, but positively blase over 20 years after Parenthood and Baby Boom. The novelty here is that it’s that Sex and the City conspicuous consumer Sarah Jessica Parker “discovering” what Allison Pearson’s novel didn’t exactly discover, either — parents are perpetually overworked and overcommitted. Parker, cast so she could narrate in voiceover just as she did in Sex and the City, is Kate, the frazzled investment banker trying to keep her job, but also her kindergartener and 2-year-old happy and her working husband, Richard (Greg Kinnear), content. She travels. A lot. Kate is closing in on a big deal, and has to win over a handsome

upper-level manager (Pierce Brosnan). And that’s the straw that may be the one that breaks this mother camel’s back. She lies awake working on “The List” — birthday party plans, school bake sale obligations, home repair arrangements. “Number 3, Call Richard’s mother. Number 4, Wax something. ANYthing.” The cute lines don’t have a lot of snap to them. So to spark things up, the script and director Douglas McGrath (Infamous, Nicholas Nickleby) lean heavily on testimonials — the friends, colleagues and fellow moms

who marvel, either genuinely or sarcastically to the camera — “I don’t know how she does it.” Christina Hendricks is the singlemom pal, Seth Meyers is a back-stabber at the office, Olivia Munn is the younger assistant who looks at Kate and vows “never getting married, never having kids.” Her assessment of Kate? “You’re tired and always insufficiently groomed.” Jane Curtin shows up as the judgmental mother-in-law who can deliver withering condemnations with a smile: “If you had stayed home with Ben (her toddler), would he be talking by now?” Parker gamely plays the slapstick, the little wardrobe disasters that anybody with kids will recognize. But she’s swimming against a riptide of a script, a movie that no endless voiceover, no cute testimonial and no number of freeze frames — where she stops the action to address the camera — can save. She looks exhausted, first scene to last, and that fatigue spills off the screen onto us.

Nobody really knew Matthew Broderick could sing, back in the early ’90s. Still, it’s a little bit of a surprise to recall that Disney used somebody else to do his crooning in 1994’s The Lion King. A year later, Broderick would storm Broadway in the musical revival How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Lion King was the movie that Disney insiders regard as a high-water mark for traditional Disney animation, the exclamation point on the success story that began with The Little Mermaid and continued with Beauty and the Beast. That cell-animated (with some digital sequences) classic earns a nice 3-D dressing up in The Ling King 3D, Disney’s two-week re-issue of the film, opening today. That’s to be followed by an early October release on BluRay. It still looks lovely, with beautifully drawn lions and hyenas — plus a warthog, a meerkat, a mandrill and a hornbill, and assorted other denizens of the African savannah. The wildebeest stampede is almost as novel and breathtaking as it was when the film was new. And those voices — Nathan Lane’s career had a major uptick after his turn, and Lane and his Guys and Dolls co-star Ernie Sabella made Disney’s greatest comic team — pre-Buzz and Woody. Jeremy Irons must have worn a mustache into the recording booth to voice Scar, the villain. There’s a mustache twirl in every treacherous line. James Earl Jones, as the king, Mufasa, gave the story’s message weight: “Being brave doesn’t mean you go looking for trouble.” The 3-D doesn’t add much — only depth — to this film, which won a couple of Oscars upon its release. A wildebeest or hyena almost falls into your lap, here and there. Once upon a time, pre-video, Disney reissued its classics to theaters for short runs so that a new generation could experience them the way they were meant to be seen. That makes this Lion King revival part of a grand tradition, 3-D or not. Some who were just children 17 years ago have the chance to make this the first Disney film their kids see in a theater. Lucky them.

New ‘Straw Dogs’ feels radically different By Rene Rodriguez McClatchy Newspapers

Straw Dogs is an artful provocation — a meditation on masculinity and societal mores in the guise of an explosive thriller. While remaking Sam Peckinpah’s controversial 1971 classic, writer-director Rod Lurie (The Contender, The Last Castle) has kept the plot virtually intact. What makes the two films feel radically different is tone. Where Peckinpah was borderline nihilistic, Lurie is unabashedly humanist, simultaneously celebrating and mourning the primal savagery we all harbor within us — a savagery that has been lulled into dormancy by civilization. On paper, James Marsden and Kate Bosworth seem like odd substitutes for Dustin Hoffman and Susan George: These young, attractive actors are best known for their work in comic-book movies (X-Men, Superman Returns) and comedies. But their casting turns out to be a stroke of genius — so far removed from the stars of the original film that the inevitable comparisons are rendered moot. Marsden and Bosworth, delivering career-high performances both, make these characters their own. The story remains simple: Hollywood screenwriter David Sumner (Marsden) and his actress wife Amy (Bosworth) relocate from the West Coast to her small hometown in Mississippi to restore and

then sell her family home. The locals still remember Amy fondly, especially her ex-boyfriend Charlie (Alexander Skarsgard), a former high-school football star whose greatest triumphs are behind him. Charlie is obviously still in love with Amy, but he’s respectful of her marriage and doesn’t overstep his boundaries — at least for a while. The trouble begins when the Sumners hire Charlie and his crew to fix their roof. The workers’ constant presence and rude behavior — one of them walks into the house uninvited and takes a beer from the fridge without asking — gradually takes a toll on the marriage. Hairline cracks become fissures. David suggests that Amy stop dressing so provocatively. She responds with anger, claiming she dresses that way for him. The word “coward” is flung around. The men sense David’s emasculation: They can

practically sniff it in the air, and they grow bolder in their transgressions. Charlie admires Amy from afar, hammer in hand. An aura of menace develops. Suddenly, even the most commonplace act seems fraught with danger. In Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs, you watched the characters from a distance, like lab rats in a clinical study of marital dysfunction, but you never related to them as people: They were strange and unknowable. In Lurie’s version, you genuinely like the Sumners and understand their union — David is essentially the audience surrogate — so you feel the tension in your gut as the couple faces increasingly threatening intrusions and violations. Lurie’s Straw Dogs argues that we are products of our environment and that we learn to survive by embracing the attitudes and values around us, even when they contradict our own instincts. Much like Peckinpah’s film, the new Straw Dogs climaxes with an eruption of extreme violence, and the sequence is both cathartic and corrosive. There is a great tragedy to the bloodbath, but there is great victory, too. You can only push people so far before they break — or start to fight back. The conflagration that ends Straw Dogs is more triumphant than lamentable: Sometimes, you have to be taken to the edge of the abyss to find out who you really are.

John Will Davis may shudder at some of his first attempts at painting — “I look at some of the paintings that I did when I first started, and I would like to throw them away,” he said — but he knows he has polished his craft from the days of his first serious art attempt, which involved painting flowers. “I threw it in the trash because I didn’t like it,” he remembers. But when his youngest daughter removed it and repainted it better than he did, “that was inspiration. I was supposed to be the one learning how to paint, and here my daughter took it out of the trash can and painted it better than me.” The oil painter, whose work will be on exhibit at the Anniston Public Library until Sept. 30, remembers wanting to be an artist since he was a child, referencing old school papers he discovered that asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. His answer? “I had in there ‘a cartoonist,’” he said. “Ever since I was small, I’ve always wanted to have something to do with art.” After graduating from Anniston High School in 1975 and working at the U.S. Foundry for a number of years, Davis became serious about art in September 1996, when he attended an art exhibition in Atlanta where he sought feedback on the drawings he brought with him from home. But

the bevy of talent he saw overwhelmed him. “There were artists from all over the world, and their [work] was colorful and mine were pencil sketches,” he said. The shame he felt led him to take his work back to his car, but he stayed at the show, collected business cards, and upon leaving revealed to his wife that the show was where he wanted to be. A year later, he was published, and the following year he was the featured artist at the same exhibition. Looking back, Davis thinks the fortune he encountered was “pretty amazing.” “I think that was a long stretch from some artists who never get a chance to get this far that quick,” he said. “I just consider it a very good blessing.” Davis, who hasn’t exhibited since 2001 in Atlanta, has prepared numerous images over the years, including portraits, landscapes and historical images of Buffalo Soldiers, most notably Cathay Williams, who is known to be the first African-American woman to enlist in the military. Davis believes his image of her was so well-received because he chose to portray her as a soldier instead of as beautiful woman. “I didn’t create her beautiful,” he said. “My thinking is if she was, back in those days, able to get into the military as a man, she had to almost look like a man, have some features of a man, to help her make that pass.” Over the past few years, Davis was sidled with caring for

his ill parents and other family members, which took away from his time to create. And even though he “was blessed to be able to take care of them when they needed me,” his painting suffered. “There was very little that I could do,” he said. Davis is now assisting in the creation of a mural in cooperation with the Spirit of Anniston Foundation and local artist Joseph Giri. He also created a Freedom Riders painting in 2007. “There’s a lot of history here, it’s just not as known as much as people know about it from Birmingham … and in Atlanta,” Davis said. He thinks those places were betterknown for their involvement because of those who were involved. He hopes his art will “let the younger generation know that it’s not always been sugar and cake,” he said. “My art hopefully gives them an idea of the way things were and how things are now.” Davis also sees his talent in his grandchildren, but doesn’t always try to pressure them into learning. “A lot of times when I’m sitting up painting, they will ask me questions, and I will try to pass it on then,” he said. “When I see them interested, I know that I’ve got their undivided attention — I’ll put as much in their little brains as I can. “ Erin Williams is a graduate of Faith Christian School and the University of Alabama. NEW YORK — Erica Kane wouldn’t leave quietly if she felt she’d been wronged. Neither is Susan Lucci as All My Children nears its end on ABC. Lucci has memorably portrayed Kane on the drama, which airs its last episode on ABC on Sept. 23, and it’s unclear whether she will be a part of an attempt to migrate the series online. In a newly published epilogue to her memoir, Lucci sharply criticized her ABC bosses for axing All My Children, which has been on the air since 1970. She said the decision to cancel the show was motivated by greed and said the head of ABC’s daytime unit, Brian Frons, has “that fatal combination of ignorance and arrogance.” Frons, in canceling All My Children and One Life to Live in April, said the soap operas were a victim of declining interest. He said trying to prop up shows in severe decline was like “trying to catch a falling knife.”

Lucci told her own story in the paperback edition of All My Life, a memoir published in hardcover earlier this year. The actress said Frons said, in telling her about the cancellation, that it would be 40 percent cheaper to make the cooking and weight-loss series that are replacing the two soap operas. “If Brian Frons could show his bosses that he could save the network 40 percent in production costs, he could keep his job even if the rest of us lost ours,” she wrote. She noted that several employees on All My Children had either lost their jobs or lost money when the show moved its production base from New York to California in recent years to save money. “I wonder, did Brian Frons take a pay cut, too?” Lucci wrote. She criticized Frons for installing a new head writer on the show in 2008, and essentially pushing aside Agnes Nixon, the soap opera legend who created All My Children. Lucci said that several times “I’d click the television to ABC and not real-

ize I was watching All My Children. If the show was unrecognizable to me, I can only imagine how our viewers felt.” Frons was not available for comment, a spokeswoman said, and ABC declined to address Lucci’s specific comments. “We have all the respect in the world for Susan and are sorry she felt the need to write this epilogue to an otherwise incredible career,” spokeswoman Jori Petersen said. The future for Lucci and All My Children is uncertain. The media company Prospect Park in July signed a licensing deal to continue the two soap opera stories beyond their television lives either online or on other platforms. The company has announced deals with some of the One Life to Live actors, and is said to be negotiating with Lucci and other All My Children actors. Prospect Park has no announcement on any All My Children participants, spokeswoman Melissa Zuckerman said Monday.

LOS ANGELES — The number of women working as writers and directors on primetime broadcast programs took a big tumble in the 2010-11 season, a new study reports — part of an overall decline in women’s employment as actresses and in key creative jobs behind the camera. Women comprised 15 percent of writers on the prime-time dramas, comedies and reality shows on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and the CW, down from 29 percent in the 200910 season, according to the report from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University. In the directing ranks, it found, 11 percent were women, compared with 16 percent the previous year. Overall, the center said, women accounted for 41 percent of all on-air characters — down from the record-high 43 percent the year before — and comprised 25 percent of the people working as series creators, producers, executive producers, directors, writers, editors and directors of photography, a decrease of two percentage points. The study, which the center has been doing since the 1995-96 season, is based on surveying one randomly selected episode from each network series during the season. “Statistically speaking, the randomization of the choice of episodes — across many series — should yield an accurate picture of the season of network shows because biases or idiosyncrasies are minimized,” said Martha Lauzen, executive director of the center. The number of female characters varied widely by network, with only the CW, at 52 percent, representing women “in accurate proportion to their representation in the U.S. population,” the report said. ABC was next with a 43 percent showing, followed by CBS at 40 percent, Fox at 39 percent and NBC at 36 percent. In addition to the drops registered among writers and directors, employment for women was also down among program creators (18 percent) and producers (37 percent). It was unchanged for executive producers (22 percent) and up slightly among editors (20 percent) and directors of photography (4 percent), the report said. “Programs with at least one woman creator or writer featured more female characters than programs with no women creators or writers,” it said.

I thought they both brought a lot to the show and I am not sure if I will even watch this season now that they are not going to be on it. A: The series, which began its second season last week, is still working out what it thinks is the right combination of hosts, and the combination did not include Remini and Peete. Returning for the second season of The Talk are Sara Gilbert (who is also an executive producer), Julie Chen and Sharon Osbourne. Sheryl Underwood is joining them as a host. In addition, Kris Jenner will fill in for Osbourne for two weeks this fall. And Molly Shannon will appear as a guest host through September. You may recall that The View, which The Talk more than slightly resembles, has also made changes at times. The original setup involved three regulars — Meredith Vieira, Star Jones and Debbie Matenopoulos — along with Barbara Walters on some days and Joy Behar others.
