Salute to Industry Week
letter
from the chair
Dear Calhoun County, On behalf of the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce and its 1500 Member representatives, we “SALUTE” the manufacturing industries in our County. Calhoun County is fortunate to have a strong and diverse industrial base that helps buffer our community against economic downturn. All sectors are co-related and co-dependent in a healthy and strong economy. Whether it is transportation, utilities, medical, education, governmental or other areas of our local community, we are all impacted and supported by industry. Of course, the most obvious economic impact industries play comes in their roles as employers. They give paychecks to employees who in turn deposit money in our banks, spend money in our stores and use local services. Our industries take their role as corporate citizens seriously. They contribute in terms of dollars and time to area schools, civic, charitable, churches and recreational groups. Industry remains a cornerstone of opportunity and job creation in Calhoun County. For their contribution to Calhoun County, the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce would like to say “Thank You”. Best Regards,

Since 1982, new and expanding industry has brought in $1.34 billion in capital investment. With that being said, the Calhoun County Economic Development Council (EDC) helps bring businesses and industry to greater Calhoun County, Alabama communities. These include the communities of Anniston, Oxford, Jacksonville, Piedmont, Ohatchee, Hobson City, Weaver and others. 2011 Salute to Industry
Industry Profile Auto Custom Carpets, Inc. In 1977, Jack Holland started Auto Custom Carpets, Inc. (ACC) with a handful of employees and one facility. Today, with corporate offices and manufacturing facilities located in Anniston, ACC is the world’s leading manufacturer of automotive replacement carpet and has grown to employ over 150 employees and operate out of five facilities across two states. ACC manufactures original style automotive replacement carpet, floor mats, trunk mats, sound deadeners, and molded vinyl mats. All of the products are year, make and model specific and the company has applications for vehicles dating back to the late 1940s to current year. Products are shipped to thousands of retailers and wholesalers all over the world and the company takes great pride in the fact that they do not outsource any of the administration or manufacturing. Who would use ACC products? ACC products are used by someone who is restoring an old vehicle or restyling a new one, someone buying or selling a vehicle that has been smoked or rained in and needs to freshen up the interior, or someone just wanting to update their vehicle’s interior. Car owners interested in replacing stained, worn, dirty, and stinky carpet and floor mats call on ACC because replacing the carpet and floor mats in a vehicle is still the least expensive way to make the largest impact on the interior. Is ACC hiring? Currently, ACC does not have any positions available, but openings are advertised in The Anniston Star. ACC is an Equal Opportu-
nity Employer. Employee benefits include 10 paid holidays per year, vacation days, direct deposit, life insurance, annual flu shots, competitive rates for BCBS medical/dental and prescription insurance, ESOP, 401K, career path program, plus many more. Ken Howell, President and CEO said, “Although Auto Custom Carpets, Inc. is part of the automotive industry, we have our own niche inside the industry. In the past, I have said that we were recession proof. During booming economic times, people were busy restoring their collector cars and during poor economic times, people were fixing up their car they drove each day. We may have been recession poof but we were not “Great Recession” proof. This recession has affected us as it has countless other businesses. We had to cut back and trim fat but with the help of our employees, we held our own during 2007 and 2008 and have grown each year since.” The management team has over 465 years of combined service with the company and includes a few employees who have been with the company since its incorporation. ACC is an employee owned company, which means all of the employees have a vested interest in the products and services offered. After 90 days on the job, employees have a company paid Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) account, which acts as a retirement benefit. If company sales are up, that means more money is deposited into each ESOP account. When company sales are down, the ESOP accounts do not grow. When each employee gives their best, the company grows and so do the ESOP accounts.

“The Anniston Facility of Hood Packaging has been a part of this growing community for over 17 years. Our facility has increased in number over those years from 8 to 10 associates to, now, 50-60 associates. Hood selected this community to build it’s plant because of the work ethic of the people and the ideal location. Industries support communities but strong communities help build strong industries. Our plant believes in three principles - SAFETY, QUALITY, then PRODUCTIVITY. Hood - Anniston has been recognized for providing a safe work environment with only one recordable accident in the last 4 years and no lost-time injuries in over 5 years. Our goal in QUALITY is to consistently meet or exceed our customers’ expectations. It’s proven that when we get the first two right, PRODUCTIVITY will be there.”
2011 Salute to Industry Huron Valley Steel
Industry Products Company
A Leader in Non-Ferrous Metals Processing Since 1961, Huron Valley Steel Corporation has been a technological leader in the recycling industry. Long before recycling became a global concern, Huron Valley Steel was researching and developing systems to increase metal recovery and reduce waste stream volumes. The many pioneering breakthroughs have made Huron Valley Steel an industry leader in the recovery and recycling of nonferrous metals. Each year Huron Valley Steel processes close to a billion pounds of material from automobile shredder operators. The metals recovered include aluminum, copper, brass, zinc, and stainless steel. This metal, which in the past was sent to landfills, provides an economical alternative to extracting and processing metal bearing ores. Headquartered in Trenton, Michigan, Huron Valley Steel operates recovery and recycling facilities in Belleville, Michigan and Anniston, Alabama and has a joint-venture operation, HVF West, located in Tucson, Arizona.
Industry Products Co. Inc. is a company that prides itself on meeting the individualized needs of its clients and delivering a good product at a fair price. It is located at 1530 ITC Way in Anniston. Industry Company The local Industry Products Co.,Products which has a home base in Piqua, Ohio, supplies the following parts to Honda in Lincoln: watershields, protective coverings, trunk and cargo area systems, and noise and vibration components. The privately held parent company is 40 years old and is woman-owned. Ninety percent of the work done by IPC’s entire company is automotive related, and the company also makes gaskets for industrial use. Anniston’s company is 60,000 square feet and was a project of the Calhoun County Economic Development Council. It employs 25 employees. The company couples its extensive knowledge of materials with a strong research and development process. The motto of the company is “With Us It’s Personal.”
Metal Recovery & Processing Globally the largest volume of scrap metal comes from vehicles. Each year more than 12 million vehicles are scrapped in North America alone. Prior to Huron Valley Steel’s development and refinement of automated sortation technologies, most nonferrous metal from automobile shredders was hauled to landfills. Aluminum accounts for approximately 75% of recovered metals at Huron Valley Steel. After processing, the aluminum is available to customers as a mixed wrought/cast scrap, as a 3105 sow or as a 380 sow/ingot. The remaining 25 percent of nonferrous metals recovered are comprised of zinc, brass, copper, and stainless steel. Huron Valley Steel has the capability to separate the majority of this mixed heavy metal concentrate into different metal groups but today, due to market conditions, most of the mixed metal concentrate is sold to our customers in the Far East. The Anniston, Alabama and River Rouge, Michigan facilities are ISO Certified. Huron Valley Steel’s Mission “We are motivated by the knowledge that the Earth’s resources are finite. We are dedicated to seeking and implementing ways of reclaiming and recycling all that mankind uses and casts aside. We are driven to our task by the conviction that the bounty of this Earth is but a loan...not to be consumed but, rather, to be shared with all future generations.
