decisions at Apple and in his own life.

The intimate chapters, where Jobs’ personal side shines through, with all his faults and craziness, leave a deep impression. There’s humor, too, especially early on when Isaacson chronicles Jobs’ lack of personal hygiene, the barefoot hippie who runs a corporation. And deeply moving are passages about Jobs’ resignation as Apple’s chief executive, and an afternoon he spent with Isaacson listening to music and reminiscing.

Steve Jobs was originally scheduled to hit store shelves in 2012. Its publication date was moved up after Jobs died. As such, there are bits that might have benefited from another round of editing. There are anecdotes, for example, that Isaacson repeats as if introducing them to the reader for the first time.

In the end, it’s a rich portrait of one of the greatest minds of our generation.

• Make sure your children carry a flashlight, glow stick or have reflective tape on their costumes.

• Don’t go inside anyone’s house unless accompanied by a parent.

• Know the route your kids will be tak-

ing if you aren’t going with them, and pick out a costume that will be safe. Make sure it’s fireproof. If they are wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough for good peripheral vision.

• Be aware of the weather. If it’s going to be a warm Halloween, don’t go for the furry monkey suit for your toddler. They’ll be hot and you’ll be miserable.

• Be patient. Be polite. Everyone has to wait a turn and there will be plenty of candy for everyone.

New BloodRayne better than its predecessors BloodRayne: Betrayal Xbox Live Arcade: 1200 Microsoft Points, PlayStation Network: $15 The BloodRayne series has been traditionally awful. A weak original game, a mediocre sequel and a terrible movie don’t exactly combine into something Chris amazing. Now every other BloodRayne game has been a three-dimensional hackand-slash affair. Betrayal shares similar gameplay as its predecessors, but it does so as a two-dimensional, side-scrolling adventure.

BloodRayne has several moves in her disposal, including fierce blades and a gun. The blades can be combined with the dash for a deadly decapitation move.

The vampire can suck the blood of a dazed opponent to replenish precious health. The life bar is also restored once a checkpoint has been reached.

The visuals are one of the best parts of the game. A creepy forest and a castle

are just two of the locations you’ll visit while playing through the campaign. The locales feature vibrant colors, but are still dark enough to keep the grim mood you’d expect.

Heavy metal riffs dominate the games soundtrack. It does a great job of adding to the element of rush.

Betrayal has 15 levels spread out over several chapters. It’ll take longer than the standard downloadable game to beat.

So does BloodRayne: Betrayal right the wrongs of the previous titles?

Yes and no.

The game is a solid hack-and-slash with enough gameplay to keep you busy

for hours. On the bad side, this can make some levels feel repetitive.

The fluid controls go a long way in making Betrayal a fun game to play.

I’m also a fan of the score ranks that are given at the end of each level. You have to score a certain number of points to reach each specific rank. The highest marks will test your patience, as they require an incredible amount of points to obtain.

It’s no secret that vampires and Halloween go hand-in-hand. BloodRayne: Betrayal isn’t exactly scary, but I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a vampire game to celebrate next week’s big day.

Flaming Lips to give musical tribute to Jobs NEW YORK — Steve Jobs helped transform the way music is consumed, and now he’s getting a musical tribute.

Rockers the Flaming Lips will honor the late Apple co-founder by performing a cover of the Beatles’ “Revolution” at the O Music Awards 2 on Oct. 31. The performance will be recorded with an iPad and broadcast on OMusicAwards.com, MTV announced Tuesday.

Electronic-dance singer Robyn will headline the award show, which will take place in Los Angeles. The special “celebrates the artists, innovators and fans impacting digital music culture.”

Other performers and presenters include Kelly Clarkson, Demi Lovato, Travie McCoy and Tyler, the Creator.

Jobs died at age 56 on Oct. 5 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Eagles tribute band to play Oxford Nov. 3

For those who remember singing and swaying to the hits “Witchy Woman,” “Hotel California” and “Desperado” by rock legends The Eagles, but never got the chance to see the original band live, the Oxford Arts Council is offering the opportunity for you to live your dreams.

Well, sort of.

Nashville-based tribute band 7 Bridges is making its way to the Oxford Civic Center Nov. 3 to present “The Ultimate Eagles Experience,” where the five members each assume a personality within the Eagles lineup and reinvigorate the songs that defined a generation of listeners.

Gloria Horton, current president of the council, says that bringing in an Eagles tribute band is something the organization has sought to do for a while now, and says this group came “highly recommended” from an agency the council has worked with.

“We already looked into this [group] several months ago,” Horton said. “We just know the Eagles music is popular music.”

Horton herself is not a super-fan, but does have Eagles songs that she favors, such as “Hotel California” and “Desperado,” although Horton wasn’t aware that all the songs she enjoyed from the band were actually Eagles songs until she began researching the band.

“When I [saw] their playlist of the songs of the Eagles that they’re gonna do, I know every one of them — I just didn’t know they were all Eagles songs. So I’m thinking there’ll be other people like me who will come just to hear the music but may not know that all of these are Eagles songs.”

Horton hopes the concert will draw in young and old alike, as she appreciates the fact that the Eagles music “appeals across the ages.”

She received great feedback from her students at Jacksonville State University, where she is an instructor.

In the past few years, the council has ramped up the number of performances it brings in, aiming for four or five a year, Horton said. The increase is to drum up support for the future performing arts venue in Oxford, scheduled to open around January 2013.

“We wanted to make sure that we started bringing groups in before we got our performing arts center so people would be accustomed to having things to go to when it’s completed,” she said.

The tribute concert will be the last event the council will host at the civic center,

Horton said.

“Next year we’ll probably go back to doing concerts in churches and anywhere we can find a place,” she said, but using a church as a performance space naturally limits the genres of talent that can be brought in. “You can’t bring anybody who’s gonna tell an off-color joke or something into a church.”

Horton hopes that the audience really embraces the “one degree of separation” concert experience the band will present, much like the Glen Miller dance that the council hosted earlier this year.

“I have a feeling that even though the Eagles concert is not booked as a dance that there will be people dancing in the aisles to some of this music.”

The best of all things spooky “Things need not have happened to be true. Tales and adventures are the shadow truths that will endure when mere facts are dust and ashes and forgotten.” — Neil Gaiman The horror genre is one that, through fear, tells us so much about who we are. How we react to fear tells us about ourselves and society, so this Halloween I wanted to highlight some works — across all mediums — that look at stories that pull these emotions out of us so acutely that we have set aside an entire holiday for experiencing them.

The Graveyard Book, Neil Gaiman Bobby Bozeman It’s no coincidence that I started this column with a quote from Neil Gaiman, and it’s no coinPop cidence that Gaiman’s most famous work of Cultured horror fiction is a children’s book. A winner of The Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2009, it also won the Newberry Medal and it’s a great tale about a young child whose parents are murdered. He escapes the murder as an infant and is raised by ghosts from the town’s cemetery. The book, inspired by The Jungle Book, is tender and at the same time dark, and its themes are universal to the human experience.

The Thing, John Carpenter You can’t see it, you can’t hear it and you can’t feel it. It’s an alien that takes over bodies, but the crews of scientists in the Artic never know who is friend or who is foe. The Thing is a brilliant film that shows us how fear can erode our trust and very humanity.

The Thing doesn’t have to take you over to turn you into a monster, and we become the most frightening monster of all.

The Night of the Living Dead The father of the modern zombie genre, George Romero’s classic original Night of the Living Dead really captures what horror is about. Toward the end of the movie, the anti-zombie mob goes after the zombie mob and sees the non-zombie protagonist — a black man, significant in 1968 — and, thinking he’s a zombie, shoots and kills him, again, raising the question about which mindless mob is more dangerous.

The X-Files Oh, the fear of the unknown. All fear really stems from the unknown. What’s in your closet? You think you know, but do you?

What’s up there in space? What’s the government doing? And when it seems like you’re the only one who thinks about these things, paranoia sets in. And when those with more power try and hamstring you, well hopelessness prevails. The X-Files had all this and more, and unfortunately it crumbled under the weight of its own mythology, but those first five or so seasons really explore what creepy is. And it wears a suit.

I Am Legend, Richard Matheson No, this isn’t about the Will Smith movie, although the book that it is very loosely based on has spawned quite a few movies, all very loosely based on the original I Am Legend. An incredible examination of loneliness and the concept of “the other,” the main character in Richard Matheson’s masterpiece is the last surviving human who hasn’t been turned into a vampire. He locks himself up in his home, only goes out during the daytime and hunts vampires. The vampires, who taunt him at night outside his house, originally represent the traditional “other,” or an outside threat that is different from society as a whole. However, he slowly realizes that he has become the other, that the last man on earth has become the monster to these vampires.

Top horror movies for Halloween

The more horror movies change, the more they stay the same, as last Friday’s release of Paranormal Activity 3 seems to prove. It’s the kind of low-budget, home-video-style horror-flick that’s popular with the socialnetworking generation, but it’s also a throwback to the hauntedhouse movies that have thrilled audiences for decades.

Will it fit the bill as your Halloween-season must-see? That depends. Horror movies can be as subjective as comedies: What sends you into hysterics might leave your seatmate unmoved.

With that in mind, here’s my list of the 10 best horror movies of all time, with enough demons, serial killers and space creeps to satisfy just about everyone.

1. The Shining (1980): Stanley Kubrick’s towering monolith of horror gave us some of the most memorable moments in movie history: an elevator gushing blood, a terrifying Jack Nicholson (“Heeere’s Johnny!”) and little Danny Lloyd riding his tricycle through the silent halls of the Overlook Hotel.

2. Alien (1979): The sequels became action movies, but Ridley Scott’s original about an acidblooded creature running amok on a spaceship remains a horror landmark. It’s dark, claustrophobic and mercilessly intense, but also hugely entertaining, with a jolt around every corner and the curdling screams of an excellent cast that includes Sigourney Weaver, John Hurt, Ian Holm and Harry Dean Stanton.

3. The Exorcist (1973): The story of a young girl (Linda Blair) possessed by Satan, “The Exorcist” turned sophisticated modern audiences into hysterical villagers who reportedly fainted, vomited and went into seizures at screenings.

4. Jaws (1975): Steven Spielberg’s epic horror-adventure about a killer shark is part oceanic slasher flick, part Moby-Dick and one white-knuckle ride from start to finish. The trailers alone permanently scarred most of

America: Has anyone since 1975 ever gone for a swim without looking around for a fin?

5. Eraserhead (1977): This extended hallucination so defies description that first-time writerdirector David Lynch called it simply “a dream of dark and troubling things.” One of the most ghastly things about its central creature — a malformed fetus growing in a dark hotel room — is that Lynch still won’t discuss how he made it.

6. The Thing (1982): The story of Antarctic researchers battling a shape-shifting alien, John Carpenter’s remake of the 1951 classic was panned for its stomach-churning special effects but has since become a populist favorite.

7. Seven (1995): Few movies can elicit the emotional and physical nausea that truly defines horror, and one is David Fincher’s Seven, about two cops (Brad

Pitt, Morgan Freeman) tracking a gruesomely patient serial killer.

8. Audition (1999): This Japanese film begins as a sensitive drama — it’s about a widower searching for a new wife — then suddenly becomes a screaming freak-out with eye-watering scenes of torture.

9. The Blair Witch Project (1999): A low-budget film about backpackers in a haunted forest, Blair Witch relied on nonprofessional actors, hand-held cameras and zero effects. It spawned a new genre of mockumentary horror and remains a harrowing triumph of technique over splatter.

10. Diabolique (1955): The headmaster of an isolated boarding school, his unhappy wife and his scheming mistress are the players in this ghostly, goosepimply French chiller. Robert Bloch, author of Psycho, called this his favorite horror movie.

It’s not often that you listen to a song and think, “This would sound terrific in a stadium surrounded by 20,000 other people.”

The thought comes instantly to mind upon hearing “Hurts Like Heaven,” with its shimmering guitars, soaring vocals and atmospheric keyboards. Good thing, because Coldplay is one of the few remaining bands that can regularly fill such places — both the seats and with their music.

On Mylo Xyloto, Coldplay sounds comfortable experimenting with their sound with-

out sacrificing accessibility.

The cathedral-like aura of their music recalls Simple Minds, but with better tunes, and U2, of course.

Coldplay shares producer Brian Eno with U2, and he seems to be like a fifth member here.

“Princess of China” is the best example of shaking things up, sampling a Sigur Ros track and adding vocals from Rihanna (who recorded them in L.A. while the band worked in London and Barbados; wonder if they’ve met yet?).

here is a little fuzzy and, frankly, you might want to set aside a lyric sheet.

“Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” is major ear candy, then you notice it has 10 listed composers and still can’t avoid lines like, “I’d rather be a comma than a full stop.” Did all 10 sit around and toss out banalities?

Fortunately, the music is more interesting. Being big is a burden that crushes many bands. Coldplay lives up to the challenge.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: “Up With the Birds” isn’t the best song here, but it’s a feel-good album closer that starts intimate and ends anthemic.

Kelly Clarkson beguiles with 5th album

Kelly Clarkson has been wowing audiences with her powerful voice since she burst onto the scene as the first American Idol winner a decade ago. Since then, the dynamic singer has sold millions by making female empowerment anthems her mantra, from booming pop-rock songs that call for women to stand up for them-

selves to finger-wagging tunes that tell not-good-enough men that they’re not good enough.

Clarkson’s fifth studio album, Stronger, addresses the same issues with a “richer and fuller” sound than usual: Clarkson said she wanted to sound like she does when performing live, without employing any of the modern day tuning aides. The

result is a more natural sound that allows her already explosive voice to bloom even more.

The record is full of danceable tracks that just won’t budge from your humming repertoire.

Keith keeps it simple on ‘Clancy’s Tavern’

Strip away the No. 1 hits, the soldout tours and his unabashedly patriotic point of view, and Toby Keith is just a guy who likes telling stories and putting them to music.

He gets lots of help from friends on his 15th studio album, which includes just one track (“I Won’t Let You

Down”) credited solely to him. The lyrics of frequent collaborators Scotty Emerick and Bobby Pinson are heavily featured, and the deluxe edition contains four covers Keith performed with his side band of session musicians called “Incognito Bandito” at New York’s Fillmore in 2010.

There’s nothing fancy here, just simple stories set to acoustic, electric and steel guitars with choruses you’ll memorize after a few listens.

And that’s where he runs afoul of the timekeepers, led by the obsessed Javert-like maintainer of the status quo, Ray Leon (Cillian Murphy, terrific).

Timberlake is more adequate than epic in this leading man turn, and Seyfried, in a red flapper’s bob, impossibly high heels and provocatively short skirts, still seems an innocent young thing playing at being bad.

But she’s good at suggesting a woman bored with a life where she doesn’t dare so much as take a dip in the ocean behind the mansion she grew up in. (A girl

escape enrages the system. What do the rich enjoy if not the luxury of leisure — servants to handle mundane tasks, travel expedited, lives lengthened by a system stacked in their favor? Has Sean Hannity labeled this “class warfare” yet?

But In Time is more a potentially great parable than a particularly good one.

Will and Sylvia go on the lam, the Writer-director Niccol manages to cover the same ground as film gets a needed jolt of adrenalin. It’s a pity Niccol’s script the most recent Spy Kids movie doesn’t give them anywhere to without tumbling into silliness.

But In Time still has its silly side, go. Even with its thoughtful nods its eye-rolling moments mixed in to Bonnie & Clyde and Les Miswith the pungent observations erables, In Time never delivers about modern society. The poor that transcendent Blade Runner are sentenced to poverty, and the moment, and never rises above hint that even one of them might cult classic to simple classic.

‘Captain America’ and ‘Attack the Block’ released this week on DVD

This week’s DVD releases are topped by films about people who fight injustice and evil.

Captain America: The First Avenger: Chris Evans — the guy who put the heat in the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movies — steps into the boots of the latest comicbook-inspired film champion.

He plays Steve Rogers, a 90pound weakling who, through the magic of science, becomes the hunky Captain America. The film isn’t a major disaster, but it generally could use some work. Director Joe Johnston’s uneven direction, combined with some iffy special effects, has the film spinning from heroic to horrific.

Evans always looks like he showed up late at a costume store and had to wear whatever could be cobbled together.

Everything about Captain America: The Last Avenger is uneven.

There are moments of focus when the film is a battle royal, but it’s not

sustained, leaving this latest comic book effort a candidate for a dishonorable discharge.

Attack the Block: Director Joe Cornish offers a fresh look at the aliens-vs.-humans genre with this tale of what happens when a housing complex becomes the subject of an attack. Instead of the military, it’s a gang of South London teens who have to save the day.

Cornish does a marvelous job of building tension, like a ‘50s scifi film, while creating some very interesting characters. The story is presented with just the right dash of humor to keep it from becoming too dark.

The biggest hurdle: The accents of the actors, which are so thick that there was some consideration given to subtitles.

Don’t worry. It’s not what they say, but what they do that makes this film fun.

Barney Miller: The Complete Series: The DVD contains all eight seasons of this television classic. The show’s a smart comedy that created a blueprint for the gritty portrayal of

police departments used in many dramas.

The strength of Barney Miller is the writing and acting. Typical plotlines are elevated by the intelligent — and still goofy — approach used to deal with each situation. Hal Linden and the first-rate cast — which also includes Abe Vigoda, Ron Glass and Max Gail — take the stories and give them heart through their marvelous performances.

The series is one of television’s all-time best.

Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy: British TV’s version of the John le Carre’s classic Cold War-era spy drama.

Depp makes ‘The Rum Diary’ just plain fun

The stench of cheap booze, stale cigarettes, newsprint and pre-air conditioning sweat wafts off the screen in The Rum Diary, Johnny Depp’s second shot at paying tribute to his friend, the late journalist Hunter S. Thompson.

Though it only rarely reaches the level of gonzo farce that it might have been, Diary is still an agreeably drunken stagger through the novel Thompson based on his formative year as a writer — 1960 — which he spent drunk, getting into trouble and first tangling with “The Man” in Puerto Rico.

Paul Kemp (Depp) has come to San Juan for a job interview at the San Juan Star newspaper. He’s made a bad impression by being late and seriously hung-over for his meeting with Lotterman, the editor.

“Conjunctivitis,” he insists.

“This is not the Last Chance Saloon,” Lotterman (Richard Jenkins) gripes, demanding to know what kind of drinker he’s dealing with.

“At the upper end of ‘social,’” Paul lies. “I’m poised to give it up!”

Writer-director Bruce Robinson (Withnail & I) packs the script with pithy Hunter-isms, hurling many of Thompson’s euphonious locutions at us in this opening scene. Puerto Rico, with its two languages and two flags, is “like England with tropical fruit,” Lotterman explains.

Kemp settles in, but his cynicism (he’s a failed novelist) works its way into his stories, the bowling alley tourists who are “beasts of obesity ... Great Whites ... gluttons” and “locusts.” He has to learn “Nobody wants what’s wrong with the place,” and if not from Lotterman, perhaps from Paul’s cynical colleagues, roommates and fellow drunks — photographer Bob Sala (Michael Rispoli, pretty good) or columnist-on-a-bender Moberg (Giovanni Ribisi, WAY out there).

It’s the oily press agent Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart) who sells Paul on Puerto Rico’s place within the American Dream, which was to become a running obsession with Hunter S. Thompson.

The island is “a gold mine” thanks “to something that doesn’t exist — land.”

And Paul listens to Sanderson, because the guy is offering to pay him

off and because Sanderson has the most gorgeous blond girlfriend this side of Monroe, a clothing-optional bombshell perfectly embodied by Amber Heard.

Among the supporting players, Ribisi stands out as he plays Moberg as almost a Thompson prototype — ever blitzed, always in sunglasses, stealing soaked filters from the Bacardi rum factory to distill his own hi-test brew from. He staggers everywhere, rages at authority and listens to old Hitler speeches on the phonograph, and can’t understand why others don’t nod in approval when he asks, “Shall we have some Adolf?”

The set pieces, built around the class and racial tensions of the island, make an impression on Paul, who sees unfettered capitalism’s consequences in

every “private” beach, every backroom land deal, every hostile look from an impoverished local.

Nothing much happens here that we don’t see coming — cops and cockfights, flirtations and drug trips. Depp is entirely too old to be starring in a coming-of-age-as-a-journalist tale.

(Thompson himself was 21-22 while he was there.) But Depp makes the performance work by suggesting a burn-out case in need of a second chance, someone world-weary enough to recognize the ethical temptations of the job and the alcoholic temptations of the island.

In these politically correct times, we’ve lost the “amusing drunk,” except in frat-boyish Hangover movies. Rum Diary, however predictable the trip and perfunctory the arrival, is worthy because it’s just plain fun to watch the actor who so nailed Thompson in the cult hit Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas work through the earlier version of what would become Thompson’s obsessions — Nixon, who “lies like he breathes,” hallucinogens and writing “the truth,” as he sees it, come what may. As vanity projects go, this one’s a perfectly passable Hunter S. Thompson valentine.

TV’s family focus largely dials down

This season Terra Nova has exhumed the Cretaceous period, but can it also help resurrect another block of time that would seem equally challenging to revive — the family viewing hour?

The heavily promoted prime-time show, dubbed internally at Fox as Little House on the Prairie With Dinosaurs, is an eco-action-adventure series built around a family of five that travels back 85 million years to give humans a second chance at caring for Earth. The ratings have been solid for the show, which counts Steven Spielberg and former News Corp. President Peter Chernin among its many executive producers, but — so far — are hardly enough to prompt a wave of copycat family-friendly scripted programming.

Instead, much of the fall season buzz has centered on the parade of wise-cracking women as with 2 Broke Girls, New Girl and Whitney or lackluster revamps of distinctive favorites such as the nowcanceled Charlie’s Angels and the struggling Prime Suspect. Gone are the days in prime-time TV when shows like The Cosby Show, Home Improvement, 7th Heaven or The Bernie Mac Show unabashedly courted a family audience.

Indeed, with the notable exception of Terra Nova and a handful of other programs, scripted shows in prime-time about families — for families — are on the verge of being as out of place as a T. Rex in the current Cenozoic era. The scarcity largely reflects societal and pop culture shifts over the past decades, but critics decry the conspicuous absence of scripted family shows, especially in a seemingly boundless programming universe.

“It’s very difficult to program a show with broad-based family appeal,” said Brad Adgate, an analyst for Horizon Media in New York. “The notion that families are sitting in the living room and watching the same show together is more and more scarce. Shows have become so niche and hyper-targeted, so it’s just hard to put on a show that will appeal to all age groups and genders.”

Part of the reason families don’t sit passively before the almighty television anymore is that the digital age has produced so many entertainment alternatives — iPods, video games, social media, not to mention an explosion of diverse programming on cable. As the TV audi-

Also, the family unit itself has markedly changed since the mid-1970s, when the Federal Communications Commission pressured the top three networks to institute a “family viewing hour” from 7 to 8 p.m. Over the last four decades — as divorce and single parenthood climbed sharply — the percentage of children younger than 18 living in a two-parent household slid from roughly 85 percent to 67 percent, according to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau. Meanwhile, the family viewing hour policy, born from protests about the rising tide of sex and violence on TV in the early 1970s, was scrapped by the courts within a couple of years, leaving the networks to pledge their best effort in maintaining suitable family programming in that prime-time hour.

The dearth of family programming

today can also be traced to a longstanding tension between the major networks and the creative community, which has gravitated toward darker and edgier material, particularly as cable became more of a force in Hollywood, said TV historian Tim Brooks. As shows have confronted more mature content, such as on HBO’s mobster-filled Boardwalk Empire or AMC’s meth-dealing chemistry teacher in Breaking Bad, adults have followed.

And even current series that would seem family-friendly — Modern Family, Glee and Tim Allen’s new Last Man Standing — juggle often sexually charged themes and language that many deem inappropriate for children.

“It’s like someone put red pepper flakes in the Jell-O pudding,” said Bill Cosby, the former Jell-O promoter and star of The Cosby Show, whose success brought a flood of new family programming in the 1980s.

One of the few veteran prime-time

series that appears specifically targeted for families is ABC’s The Middle, starring Patricia Heaton. The critically acclaimed show about a lower middle-class Midwestern family has been a decent ratings performer — last week it drew 8.8 million viewers, which put it in 36th place.

Brooks said there has been an evolution away from the scripted shows to reality programming such as American Idol, which are now being touted as family fare: “It’s the latest wave of reality that is filling the void. You see mostly cleancut kids trying very hard. And audiences don’t really make a distinction between a scripted show and a reality show.”

But even those reality shows contain moments that might raise the ire of some parents. The pilot of Fox’s The X Factor featured a contestant who removed his pants during his performance, which disgusted judge Paula Abdul so much she left the arena (the man’s offending parts on the show were covered up).

A: I am guessing that you came across one of the collections of Durbin movies released as part of Turner Classic Movies’ vault collections. One, the Music and Romance Collection, includes five of her movies.

There is also a Sweetheart Pack of six films, and you may find some titles offered individually.

Born in Canada but raised in California, she was 14 when Hollywood came calling in the mid ‘30s. Adept as a singer, she found success in a series of Universal pictures where she was, in critic David Thomson’s words, “a true teenage star, pretty, cheerful, clean, and tuneful.” At the 1938 Academy Awards, she and Mickey Rooney received a special, shared Oscar “for their significant contribution in bringing to the screen the spirit and personification of youth, and as juvenile players setting a high standard of ability and achievement.”
