Through all these moments, his mother rarely dominates the book, an unconscious statement, perhaps, about how little she was in his life.

He returns to her at the end of the memoir in a heart-breaking account of her dementia and death.

Yet even in her papers, there were no answers to the big question. The truth about his paternity was to arrive from an unexpected source.

It’s hard to describe what Love and Circumstance is. It’s a kind of stream-ofconsciousness memoir, a chronicle of the music scene in the 1970s, and a book with a seemingly unanswerable mystery at its core. That all of this is so deftly combined into one gripping read is evidence of Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s originality.

This past year, there have been a lot of books by and about celebrities. It will be a shame if this small wonder of a memoir gets lost among some less worthy books.

Picking up pieces from the Soviet collapse 8 Pieces of Empire: A 20-Year Journey Through the Soviet Collapse by Lawrence Scott Sheets; Crown, 2011; 336 pages; $28

The Soviet Union didn’t just collapse — it shattered into many, many pieces.

And suddenly, those pieces — political, economic, even religious — were up for grabs.

Lawrence Scott Sheets’ 8 Pieces of Empire is a vivid, largely anecdotal account of the chaos and confusion that has followed in the two decades since the fall of the massive communist entity that once obsessed America. It leaves the reader hungry for more.

As a correspondent for Reuters and NPR, Sheets had access to a range of people and places, but he often found himself tagged a “war correspondent.”

This often meant covering conflicts that didn’t necessarily get the attention they deserved in the West — Azerbaijan versus Armenia, Azerbaijan versus itself and more. Sheets gives them generous space, and often in unusual ways. In one case, he describes how some carpets managed to save a group of people fleeing a conflict zone.

The strength of the book lies in its descriptions of individuals, whether bureaucrats (“I cannot answer that question”) or the young woman who was too Chechen for the Russians and too Russian for the Chechens and who ultimately vanished at a time when kidnappings were rife.

There are far too many moments of absurdity. Some are funny. Some are not.

A decision to go to war made by naked, drunken men in a bathhouse during a

birthday party? Tragic, indeed. (After reading the book, one cannot help but wonder how different the Soviet Union could have been if people didn’t drink so much, but maybe that’s venturing into chicken-and-egg territory.)

Unfortunately, some of the most interesting parts of Sheets’ book also are some of its slimmest sections. The changing role of the Russian Orthodox Church and the rising strength of Islam deserved more space.

But the author himself notes that in many ways what was once the Soviet Union is not finished falling apart. Separatist movements abound, and more wars, even if small, seem almost certain.

There will likely be plenty more pieces to write about in the future.

‘Battlefield 3’ offers intense multiplayer action

“Call of Duty” games have been dominating the world of console online shooters in recent years, but another series that built much of its devoted following on the PC is making a strong push for its share of that space.

“Battlefield 3” ($59.99, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC) is the latest installment from Electronic Arts and Swedish developer Dice, and its expansive maps, amazing selection of vehicles and intense gunfights are sure to keep gamers logging their online hours.

Sure, it’s war, but the game makes war look as gorgeous as it possibly can with beautifully designed maps that come to life with incredible detail and lighting.

The Xbox 360 version comes on two discs — one for campaign mode and one for multiplayer — and suggests installation of an HD texture pack to bring out its full visuals. It’s well worth the storage space.

The brief campaign mode, which should take no more than six to eight hours to complete, follows a story told by Sgt. Henry Blackburn, a Marine under suspicion of treason with information on a potential terrorist attack.

It jumps right into the action, throwing Blackburn into an intense battle with members of a militant Iranian insurgency on a moving train. But then it quickly slides into a military interrogation room with him recounting the events leading up to that scene.

The game also offers co-op mode, allowing a player to team up with an online partner to tackle scenes loosely based on the campaign with the goal of unlocking some additional weapons.

We’ll soon see what new bells and whistles “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3” brings to the multiplayer online shooter arena, but until then, I’ll be spending as much time as I can playing “Battlefield 3.”

Local gaming company delays launch of new system Fans looking forward to the EVO 2 video game console will have to wait a bit longer. Local gaming company Envizions has announced that the system’s launch has been delayed until next year.

The company has several interesting options in the pipeline to make the wait easier.

Derrick Samuels, CEO/founder of Chris Envizions, noted several Pittman reasons for pushing the iSpy EVO 2 release to 2012.

“I couldn’t really do what I had visioned for the system with the ‘Internet coming alive’ concept with my current specs,” Samuels wrote in a recent email.

Development of first-party games played a key role in the decision.

“I wasn’t happy with the earlier EVO 2 software,” Samuels said. He adds that a

potential “huge partnership deal” wasn’t finalized yet, and he wants this in place before the console launches.

Envizions is starting to ship software development kits to game creators from all over. These developers will be able to use these to create software that fits the custom EVO 2 specifications.

The result is a robust lineup of games when the console hits store shelves.

One of the titles that is planned to launch with the EVO 2 is called “Qquip.”

“Qquip” is an Uno-style playing card game that Samuels created. A physical version will be made available soon.

The goal is to be the first player to complete a phrase. There are 10 phrase cards in each deck with varying word amounts.

When you have a word card in your hand that is part of the phrase, you have a tough decision to make. You can play the card on the table, or hold on to it. Each decision has its own level of strategy.

Action cards are embedded in the deck that can change the game completely in a single turn. These cards can allow the player to pick a played card from an opponent, reverse the order of the game, change the phrase and more.

There are 20 action cards in each deck.

“The game is emotional,” Samuels said. “People will get frustrated. I’ve watched people get up and walk out of the room after a key action card has been played.”

The company will release professional decks in the future. They feature more phrases and action cards to add to your deck.

The Qquip card game will be available soon for $4.99 a deck. Price is always subject to change.

Those that prefer digital entertainment can rest easy.

Envizions plans on re-releasing the original EVO Smart Console later in the year.

Samuels explains that the demand for the classic console has not gone away. He plans to work with his hardware partner to create more of the Windows-based version of the system.

“The idea is to release 50 or 100 units in a Groupon-like request,” he said.

If the past year or so is any indication, the total will be easily reached.

The EVO Smart Console would come packaged with a keyboard, mouse and game controller.

Samuels wants to make the deal special by throwing in some extras.

“We are keen on selling these units for $499 with a seven-inch Android tablet and free Qquip cards,” he said.

Now gamers can see the evolution between the first and second consoles.

The wait for the EVO 2 will disappoint some, but the added time should pay off in a big way.

And remember, good things do come to those who wait.

New Winehouse album to be released in December LONDON — A new album of recordings by the late soul singer Amy Winehouse will be released in December, Island Records said Monday.

It said Lioness: Hidden Treasures will contain 12 songs — previously unreleased tracks, alternative versions of existing hits and brand new songs — recorded by the beehive-wearing singer who died at her London home on July 23.

The label said Winehouse’s longtime musical partners Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi had spent time since her death listening to recordings of the singer, who many said never sang or played a song the same way twice.

Island Records said the duo quickly realized that they had “a collection of songs that deserved to be heard, a collection of songs that were a fitting testament to Amy the artist and, as importantly, Amy their friend.”

Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) is hilariously on the make as a Jamaican maid who lost her savings and may lose her work visa if she can’t find a husband. Pena, of The Lincoln Lawyer, is a hoot.

It takes talent to play this clueless.

LOS ANGELES — Americans’ spending on home videos has finally emerged from the recession — helped by more purchases of higher-priced Blu-ray discs and greater outlays on cut-rate rentals from Netflix and Redbox.

For the three months through September, home movie spending rose nearly 5 percent from a year earlier to $3.9 billion, the first increase since early 2008, according to industry organization, The Digital Entertainment Group.

Buying digital copies of movies and ordering them from set-top box video-on-demand services also rose.

People bought fewer DVDs and made fewer trips to brick-and-mortar video rental stores, cutting into the gains.

For the year overall spending is down about 2 percent at $12.3 billion.

The industry is struggling to cope with a weak economic recovery and the gradual wane of the DVD era. The digital discs, once revolutionary for their clarity and durability, were shown the exit once Blu-ray became the industry’s high-definition standard in 2008. Compared to a year ago, DVD sales dropped by 15 percent, or about $230 million, to $1.32 billion.

Blu-ray disc sales rose by about $156 million, to $423 million. That didn’t make up for the DVD drop, even with the help of the popular re-release of the six Star Wars movies on Blu-ray, which racked up $38 million in North America in its first week of sales in late September.

There’s still room for Blu-ray to grow.

Although Blu-ray player households rose by 52 percent to 33.5 million, that’s still only about a third of the TV-owning homes in the U.S. Brick-and-mortar store rentals fell by $142 million to $353 million, but they were more than replaced by a $152 million gain in new delivery methods, such as online streaming, video-on-demand, mail-order subscriptions and cheap rentals from kiosks.

Revenue from those rental methods rose to $1.70 billion. Kiosk rentals made up more than half of those gains.

Netflix Inc.’s price hike to customers on Sept. 1 may have bolstered the numbers, and Redbox said it was raising its nightly DVD rental fee to $1.20 from $1, which will likely add to the current quarter’s totals.

Just a few months after starting the process, Mayo put on his first show. He quickly lined up a radio deal, but had bigger things in mind. He hooked up with local producer Todd Jarrell, who has a history with PBS, and with the help of friends they built a show they hope will one day be as popular as PBS mainstays like Austin City Limits and Soundstage.

Joining Gill in Season 2 will be The Del McCoury Band, The Civil Wars and Lawson with his band Quicksilver. So far, 60 PBS markets, including Boston, Dallas, Chicago and Seattle, have picked up the show, with about 60 percent showing it in primetime. And it continues to grow.

Even before the boost of TV exposure, however, the monthly show became a destination. Mayo has had several attendees from overseas and audiences often have a mix of locals and visitors.

Mayo recently asked a couple where they were from. They responded California, but said they had heard about the show from friends in Michigan who’d already been.

“It’s kind of a bucket list destination for folks,” he said.

Holiday Block Party with ice sculptor Aaron Costic set for Saturday

There’s going to be a blizzard on Noble Street Saturday.

For 22 years, ice sculptor Aaron Costic has been making it snow in some of the most unlikely places. With chainsaw, chisel and grinder in hand, Costic can transform an ordinary block of ice into a work of art. But, as breathtaking as the final product will be, it’s often the process that truly makes jaws drop.

“People love to watch,” Costic said.

“It’s amazing to see their reaction when the chainsaw comes on and they get to see the ice flying.”

Which is exactly what will be happening Saturday along the 1000 block of Noble Street (between 10th and 11th streets) as Costic shapes three 300pound blocks of ice in succession into an angel, a turkey and a reindeer — all as a part of Spirit of Anniston’s Holiday Block Party.

“It’s going to be a Christmas kickoff,” said Betsy Bean, executive director for Spirit of Anniston, which is hosting the event. “It’s the perfect time of year and a chance to remind people of the unique things we have here in downtown Anniston.”

In truth, the Ohio-based ice sculptor served as an accidental inspiration for this first-time event. Several months ago, Bean received a mass mailing from Costic’s company, Elegant Ice Creations,

which included photos and video demonstrations of Costic at work. She was “intrigued” by the thought of having such a display in downtown Anniston and, knowing how the local merchants are always looking for a unified way to begin the holiday shopping season, it all came together rather quickly.

“It just made sense,” she said. “Downtown has everything people need for one-stop shopping. You can come have lunch, buy clothes, toys, furniture, a bicycle, have your picture taken and get some exercise. It’s like a mall right in downtown Anniston, and everything is unique and locally owned.”

And while weather reports promise Saturday will be 70 degrees and sunny, for a guy who’s made it snow in Jamaica, warm weather is of little concern.

“It’s no fun watching it melt,” he said.

“The fun is in the sculpting and it doesn’t matter how hot it gets … nothing will get in the way of that.”

Costic is a world-class ice sculptor based in Broadview Heights, Ohio, who’s won numerous World Championship titles and an Olympic Arts Festival ice-carving competition gold medal in Pragelato, Italy, in 2006. He was also one of four ice sculptors for the royal wedding between Prince Albert II of Monaco and one-time Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock.

“It was an incredible honor to be a part of something so historic,” he said.

But the main production for the 10 episodes stretched from May through August in Alberta, British Columbia, whose rugged outback represented 19th-century American prairie and mountains.

“It was rough, man,” says Mount, describing a breakneck shooting schedule with most days spent outdoors in weather always in flux: “We had one day where, before lunch, it went from overcast to rain to sleet, and then it started to hail, to snow, to rain, to hail again. Then after lunch, the sun came out.” He laughs. “YOU try to make continuity on a day like that!

“In a situation like that, you either freak out, or you decide that you’re going to dance with it,” he says. “It forces you into a creative corner, and there’s something about that I really kind of like.”

Count that stance among Mount’s core professional values, which he’s reaffirmed in recent years.

“I’ve got a better sense now of what it is I want to get from acting. Part of that was moving back to New York from L.A. a couple of years ago.” New York is where he got a

master’s degree from Columbia University, then lived and worked for a spell. “I’ve been ecstatically happy back here.”

Since returning, he produced and starred in the indie feature Cook County.

He has also written plays and landed more theater work.

And now, with Hell on Wheels, he is braced for speculation from some quarters about whether this worthy drama could make him a star.

Mount says he has been visited by such thoughts, even worries, of late — though they’re not worries that he won’t get a big career boost from Hell on Wheels, but, rather, that he will.

Running into Jon Hamm at a social function, he voiced his fears to the breakout star of AMC’s Mad Men, who shared a mantra adopted a few years earlier to face down his own self-doubts: “Why NOT me?”

“Hamm puts his finger on my chest and says, ‘Why NOT you?’ And I was like, ‘Whoa!

Jon Hamm just gave ME a mantra,’” Mount recalls. “I do believe I’ve got to put myself in a place where I’m ready for my life to change, but for the right reasons and in the right way. ‘Why NOT me?’ — that’s what I’ve been saying to myself.”

Actress returns in new role on ‘Two and a Half Men’

Q: In an earlier season of Two and a Half Men, Judy Greer (currently Ashton Kutcher’s estranged wife on the show) plays Aunt Myra. How do the producers resolve having the same actor play two roles?

A: This is not even the first time that has happened on Two and a Half Men. Jennifer Bini Taylor, who played Charlie’s girlfriend Chelsea, had several other roles on the show before becoming Chelsea.

Nor is this the only show to have the same actor in different roles. Hill Street Blues famously killed off one character played by the actor Dennis Franz, then brought him back as a different character. Law & Order and its kin often drew on the same New York actors — so much that the various shows were told to wait 60 days before casting the same actor twice in prominent roles.

Q: We recently saw the excellent movie The Ides of March and wondered who the piano player /vocalist was in the brief bar scene. Absolutely no one seems to know. We stayed for the credits and

A: From what I can find, that was Bob Mervak, a musician in Detroit, where part of the movie was shot.

What happened to him and his character, and will he resurface?

A: From what I have seen, his character was cut from the show during the retooling (which, among other things, gave Maya Rudolph a bigger role in the show). Nor have I seen any indication that he will reappear.

Q: Will we ever see Memphis Beat again? We miss Jason Lee. A: I mentioned in a mailbag in mid-September that things looked shaky for the TNT series, and the situation has not improved since then. About two weeks ago Entertainment Weekly reported that Memphis Beat will not get a third season because “the cable network is doing

a little housecleaning in preparation for the arrival of its Dallas reboot next year.”

The network also axed HawthoRNE and Men of a Certain Age, but it has ordered more of Falling Skies, Franklin & Bash and Rizzoli & Isles.

Q: Please explain what happened to Christopher Meloni of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Mariska Hargitay is lost without him, despite the replacements.

A: Meloni left the series after he and the show’s makers could not agree on a new contract. There was also talk that Hargitay would be in fewer episodes and Jennifer Love Hewitt would join the show to fill the gap. But show runner Warren Leicht told the Hollywood Reporter in September that Hargitay is in all of this season’s episodes, and Hewitt is not joining the series.
