The book doesn’t neglect the dark underbelly of the period — the segregation, the racism, the repression, the hypocrisy, the chauvinism and the nuclear fears (King’s recreation of the Cuban Missile Crisis is particularly vivid). But as Jake grows acclimated to life before cellphones and Google and meets a librarian who becomes the love of his life, 11/22/63 draws you into the lives of ordinary people and their problems with the pull that has always been the secret to King’s success. By the time the eponymous date draws near, and the novel hurtles toward Dealey Plaza and that awful Texas School Book Depository building, you’re more worried about the fate of characters you’ve grown to love than how the world will change if Jake succeeds.

King has referred to 11/22/63 as a departure: His first foray into historical fiction. But this addictive, heart-stopping and ultimately moving novel is really a distillation of what King has always done so well, without the third-act problems that have plagued so many of his recent books and featuring a monster — time — that is most certainly not make-believe.

At one point, Jake laments the fact that “We never know which lives we influence, or when, or why. Not until the future eats the present, anyway. We know when it’s too late.”

Fortunately King, who is now 64, has long been aware of how much his faithful readers love him, and 11/22/63 is, in many ways, a gift from him to us.

‘Zelda’ brings sense of wonder back to Wii

It has been a brutal year for fans of the Wii. Other publishers have stopped bringing AAA games to Nintendo’s low-powered console. The best-reviewed new gamea on the system, “Xenoblade Chronicles,” has inexplicably been withheld from the United States. Nintendo itself seems ready to move on to its forthcoming Wii U. So “The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword” ($49.99) looks like the last gasp for the once unstoppable Wii. Is it worth dusting off and plugging in your old machine to play it? Absolutely — although it’s not quite the masterpiece Nintendo has been promising.

The core elements of the 25-year-old “Zelda” franchise remain. Once again, you are Link, a teenager who’s destined for great things. As usual, your friend Zelda disappears and you must run to her rescue. Your journey takes you through a series of fantastic locations — including, most notably, a series of dungeons filled with brain-twisting puzzles.

Still, there are plenty of tweaks to the formula. “Skyward Sword” begins in Skyloft, a tiny town floating high above the clouds.

Each character is master of a “loftwing,” a bird you can fly to the other rocks floating around Skyloft. While out on a joyride, Zelda

There are three major areas to explore: the grassy Faron Woods, the fiery Eldin Volcano and the desolate Lanayru Desert. Each is populated with a healthy variety of native creatures, some helpful, some vicious. There’s plenty of sword-swinging combat, but that’s not the emphasis — the real challenge is figuring out how to get through the mazelike environ-

ments to their central temples.

The “Skyward Sword” temples feature some of the most devious puzzles ever conjured up by the “Zelda” team. The desert area, for example, has switches that send parts of it back in time, to when it was a working factory. Some machines are useful, but after you get zapped by a guard robot you’ll wish you’d left the electricity off.

Besides your sword, controlled by swinging the motion-sensing Wii remote, you have a variety of

gadgets, including the reliable old grappling hook and slingshot. The most versatile of the new devices is the beetle, a flying drone that can pick up bombs and drop them on enemies.

“Skyward Sword” is filled with “aha!” moments when you suddenly figure out how to use those devices to get past a seemingly insurmountable obstacle. It’s an unusually rewarding game mechanic, emphasizing logic and strategy over reflexes, and

the devilish puzzles make this “Zelda” chapter well worth your time.

With 60-plus hours of playtime, this is the longest game in the “Zelda” franchise, but not all of it is as rewarding as the dungeon sequences. It takes several hours before Link finally gets to the surface, where almost all the action is. In between dungeons you have to keep returning to Skyloft, home to a bunch of dimwits who send you on tedious fetch quests while you’re trying to prevent the apocalypse. There’s an awful lot to do in “Skyward Sword,” but about one-third of it feels like filler.

The boss battles against the most powerful monsters range, similarly, from boring to spectacular. The bad ones essentially involve slashing at the enemy until he surrenders, but the good ones make imaginative use of the skills Link has learned. One sequence, which involves rescuing a parasite-infested sky whale, is “Zelda” at its most exhilarating.

Such moments go a long way toward reawakening the sense of wonder common to the best Nintendo games of the last quartercentury. And despite some dull stretches, “Skyward Sword” delivers enough of those moments to make it one of the most satisfying chapters in the “Zelda” canon.

Knox celebrates 30 years of ‘The Nutcracker’

The love affair has been going strong for at least 57 years.

Audiences and The Nutcracker seem to be meant for each other. And it’s not only children who are always enchanted with the art form.

People of all ages flock to Hervey the ballet Folsom year after Artists in Action year.

Since George Balanchine’s choreographed version was presented in 1954 in New York City, the story ballet has become an eagerly anticipated holiday tradition throughout the United States. Once the Balanchine production was filmed in 1993, it became a worldwide favorite.

The ballet has been a favorite holiday treat in

Anniston, too, for 30 years.

To many, this annual presentation by the Knox Concert series is the start of the holiday season, and this year’s production is at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Anniston Performing Arts Center. The story on stage remains the same, but the event is not centered completely on the dancers’ patterns and poses, the different moods of the music that Tchaikovsky composed, the costumes that define the characters or the special effects. In celebration of the 30th anniversary presentation, the visual picture as a whole contains new touches that make the magic more meaningful.

The lobby decorations are an important part of the visual experience, Knox volunteers believe, and what people see and do there brings the story of Marie, her brother Fritz, Herr Drosselmyer (the toymaker) and the nut-

cracker into closer focus.

This December, the lobby’s theme is “The Land of Sweets,” and it will be a large and varied market.

“Over the last two years, we have brought the Nutcracker Shoppe to an entirely new level,” said Scott Skinner, who works with more than 21 volunteers to set up tables with nutcracker-related items in a tent placed in the middle of the lobby. “Everyone will find something to take home with them.”

This year, a live spruce tree will be raffled off. Viewers will see a photo and read information about the Blackhill Spruce tree, a specialty tree grown in Michigan. It has thick limbs to hold heavy ornaments and it is a full tree.

“The soil in this area around Lake Michigan produces a very beautiful tree,” said Randall Moore, a retailer who sells specialty trees in Anniston

at 524 Quintard Ave. “It’s one of about 10 different brands grown up there in the SnowTree category,” he added. “It’s not an easy tree to get.”

The ballerina on the platform will be Jessica Weeks, a teacher with Sheila Lindley’s dance studio, World of Performing Arts.

On a separate table, there will be tree ornaments, made with combined metals and hanging red beads to commemorate the anniversary event, and, nearby, the bake sale will feature new sweets. And, of course, there will be a collection of nutcrackers.

The significance of nutcrackers in homes long ago sheds more light on Marie’s excitement in receiving the nutcracker, as the story goes. In 1892, when the ballet was first performed in St. Petersburg, Russia, nuts were special treats to serve at parties, according to the study guide Knox

distributed to teachers.

Stores did not carry cracked nuts. Therefore, nutcrackers were necessary. Fancy nutcrackers became special collectors’ items in households.

Following the performance, The Sugar Plum Party for children will again be in the library of the school. It provides a chance for the children to meet the professional dancers.

Jagger, Richards share new love for ‘Some Girls’

NEW YORK — Keith Richards equates the rush to release the Rolling Stones’ seminal album Some Girls as “the same as cutting off your baby’s head.”

“We couldn’t release a double album and we were on deadline,” the guitarist said of the 1978 recording. “Sometimes you’re really getting into tracks you want to finish, but they don’t make (it) because time was up.”

Many of those songs were included when the album was re-released on Tuesday as a double disc with previously unreleased material. A box set from the album also is being released.

Mick Jagger said Some Girls was a pivotal album for the band.

“The records that came before this were not as good. This was better,” Jagger said, referencing the heavily produced Goats Head Soup, and It’s Only Rock and Roll, which preceded it.

At the time, punk rock and disco were threatening the old “dinosaur rockers,” as Richards said, so the band had to get back to its basic stripped-down sound.

“The punks started to kick us ... the Sex Pistols, and The Clash, and other bands were coming out and we realized we were already in a second generation,” Richards said.

One of the album’s biggest hits, and also the most criticized at the time, was the dance track “Miss You.” “It’s not like we wanted to make a career out of disco; it just happened to be that beat, and Mick

Jagger, who says he loves all forms of dance music from the 1930s to house music, didn’t know why it mattered.

“I never thought for one minute that people would criticize you for doing something with a dance beat,” Jagger said. “So the idea of it being ‘Bob Dylan going electric’ never occurred to me.”

The song went to No. 1

on the Billboard chart, and spawned a variety of dance mixes.

Next year, the band will celebrate its 50th anniversary, and there’s a great deal of speculation as to whether the band will tour for their milestone.

“I’m hoping to do something about it. Right now, I don’t want to go too much into it. I’m pulling the boys together and (will) see what happens.

According to Richards, he and Jagger recently mended fences after Richards revealed too much

about his songwriting partner in his autobiography earlier this year.

“He’s a brother, a best friend, and probably the most contentious person I know. All collaborations are like that. Nothing goes totally smoothly, but we always patch it up. We

patched it up now. The thing is we enjoy working with each other; it’s the idea of it that’s frightening,” Richards laughed.

The duo has written most of the Rolling Stones music, and though Jagger usually sings them, Richards does have his signature tracks. Among them is “Before They Make Me Run” from Some Girls; it has become one of his favorite songs to perform.

“It’s pretty autobiographical. ... I was feeling a little hounded, so I think it came out of feeling that.

I was on the run, basically.

Very few countries would accept me at the time,” said Richards, who was facing a potentially long prison sentence at the time because of a heroin possession charge in Toronto.

Other major hits from the album include, “Shattered,” the Temptations cover of “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me),” and “Beast of Burden.”

While Richards said the unreleased music was ready to go, Jagger did say he tinkered with the remixes. “‘Claudine’ and ‘Tallahassee Lassie’ were all more or less as (they) were.

I just listened and said, ‘Do they need a bit of percussion or a harmony vocal?,’ but apart from that they’re fine,” Jagger said.

Richards is just happy that the band gets to release Some Girls with the songs they wanted to include.

“In a way it’s interesting to put the head back on the baby,” Richards said.

More ‘Papercuts’ for the Gym Class Heroes

Gym Class Heroes, The Papercut Chronicles II (Decaydance/Fueled by Ramen) Gym Class Heroes are back with part two of their Paper Chronicles, six years after the original was released.

In between the Chronicles albums they released As Cruel as School Children and The Quilt, featuring hits such as “Cookie Jar” and “Clothes Off,” but the band hasn’t released any material together since 2008.

The lead track is “Stereohearts” featuring Adam Levine. Levine’s effort is equally as catchy as Maroon 5’s own comeback with “Moves Like Jagger.”

This time, Ryan Tedder steps into the role of collaborator in “The Fighter.” The song is optimistic and motivational, despite lead singer Travie McCoy declaring that people “are waiting to see me fail”; he takes the persona of a fighter in order to deal with the haters. The dreamy lilt of singer Oh Land with a twinkling piano creates a brilliant soulful contemplation on “Life Goes On.” Tracks such as “Solo Discotheque (Whiskey Bitness)” and “Holy ... Batman” show the band taking a more rock direction, featuring guitar solos and epic choruses, but McCoy’s vocal presence on these songs are reduced, making the songs less catchy.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: After a bad day, the twinkling optimism of “Life Goes On” featuring Oh Land will put things into perspective.

Welcome back, Kermit: ‘Muppets’ delights

More than ever, we need a world where a pig can be romantically linked to a frog. A world where no one finds it odd that Jason Segel’s little brother is a puppet, and they share a room with twin beds as well as a taste for pastel leisure suits.

The Muppets marks a very welcome return for Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and the rest of Jim Henson’s creations after a 12-year big-screen absence. From start to finish, the movie is a healthy, dizzy dose of childlike bliss, the songs campy but catchy, the humor corny but clever, the cast — both human and Muppet — one of the most lovable gangs you’ll ever spend time with at the pictures (another lovable gang, the Toy Story playthings, star in a short animated charmer that precedes The Muppets).

Sure, the Muppets have long been a wholly owned subsidiary of big Hollywood, namely, the Walt Disney Co. But this is a gentle, loving rebirth, leaving intact the decency and goodness that have always been at the heart of the Muppets.

The movie’s an exercise in innocent playfulness that largely side-steps show business as usual, in which studio family flicks are stuffed to the rafters with glib pop-culture references and a soundtrack of tunes by flavor-of-the-month young idols. The Muppets are a world of their own — you love or leave them on their terms — and the filmmakers hold faithful to that

The result is refreshing on every level, a piece of nostalgia so old it’s new again, and a breather from Hollywood’s 3-D digital onslaught in favor of fur and fuzz.

Lifelong Muppets fan Segel, who co-wrote the movie with his Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller, stars as Gary, a small-town guy who heads with girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams) for a dream trip to Hollywood. Tagging along is Gary’s brother Walter, an endearing little puppet who’s the world’s biggest fan of all things Muppet.

Walter’s heartbroken to find that the Muppets’ studio in Hollywood has fallen into disrepair, while Kermit, his gal Piggy, Fozzie Bear and the others have long since parted company.

Overhearing an evil oil man (Chris Cooper) who schemes to raze the studio and drill for petroleum, Walter enlists Gary and Mary to reunite the Muppets for a telethon to raise cash to buy the place back.

In his big-screen debut, director James Bobin (Flight of the Conchords) establishes a nimble pace from the start and maintains it right through the closing credits. The story

The movie loads up on another Muppet strength, the celebrity cameo (we won’t name names, though). Some of the surprise guests add good

laughs; others seem to be there because they had a hole in their schedule or were pals with the filmmakers. The overall celebrity-guest quotient winds up disappointing. After such a long time in mothballs, the Muppets deserve a better turnout of top stars to welcome them back.

Adams deliver nicely on some of the movie’s original songs, which are cute little toe-tappers. And it’s worth the cost of a ticket just to see Academy Award winner Cooper — usually playing men so restrained they look ready to burst from internal pressure — cut loose with his own dastardly rap number.

Classic Muppets tunes also are woven in, and for anyone who grew up on The Muppet Show, it’s a thrill — yes, thrill — to see those floppy puppets dance about and sing their theme song.

The filmmakers play the ’80s flashback card heavily with well-chosen songs from the era and wisecracks about how dated the Muppets are. That’s good grist for parents but potentially a self-fulfilling prophecy for children who wouldn’t be able to tell the Muppets from the movie’s amusing tribute band the Moopets.

The plot parallels the real-world state of the Muppets — relics testing the waters to see if anyone will watch, if anyone still cares.

That could be a genuine problem for the movie. Will kids who didn’t grow up on Kermit and Piggy want to see it, no matter how much Muppet-era parents hope their children might love these characters the way they did?

Some parental guidance: if the kiddies are reluctant, tell them about the Toy Story short that plays first. No harm in letting today’s No. 1 gang of fictional family stars shill for some deserving predecessors.

This week’s top DVD picks range from a close encounter by director J.J. Abrams to a sequel for one of the best animated movies of all time.

The film has all the trappings of a sci-fi film — from a mysterious threat to an ominous military presence. Writer/director J.J. Abrams has culled the best paranoia-creating moments from ‘50s sci-fi movies.

It may have all those trappings, but at its heart is a family drama that swirls around Joe (Joel Courtney), a teen trying to deal with the loss of his mother. All of the sci-fi elements create a metaphor for the emotional beast that dominates the young man’s life.

It’s the best blend of sci-fi and family drama since E.T. phoned home.

Emotional angst and self-discovery take place

between the bookends of the phenomenal train crash and an impressive major battle between the military and the mysterious subject of the movie.

The blend of the two makes Super 8 an instant sci-fi family classic.

—Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas, Grade B: This is one of two sequels to Beauty and the Beast being released. The other is Beauty and the Beast: Belle’s Magical World.

Still, the visual gags will carry youngsters along, while there are plenty of clever wisecracks to keep their parents occupied.

Bryony’s lightning proficiency at wrapping gifts contributes some of the biggest laughs, no matter how many times the filmmakers fall back on it.

Following Flushed Away, this is the second computer-generated cartoon from Aardman, whose earlier entries were created by stop-motion animation.

But it’s the company’s first digital 3-D feature, and while the images are fine, it amounts to another case of unnecessary 3-D presentation from Hollywood. The extra dimension adds little.

Yet it’s nowhere near as unnecessary as the Justin Bieber music video of “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” that precedes the movie, in jarring 3-D. Hearing Bieber’s take on the holiday chestnut in the end-credits is more than enough.

‘Hugo’ shows Scorsese’s love of movies

Martin Scorsese’s Hugo is a children’s film for grownups — grownup film buffs.

It’s a charming and quite gorgeous exercise in the few corners of the medium where the Oscarwinning filmmaker has next to no experience — children’s stories, comedy and 3-D. And even though it is too long and the master has yet to develop much of a comic touch, this adaptation of Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret is a stunning exercise in 3-D and a delightful celebration of Scorsese’s lifelong love of the movies — something he, like Hugo, developed on childhood.

Hugo (Asa Butterfield) lives in the bowels of a Paris train station in between the World Wars. He is an orphan who hides out, carrying on the job a drunken uncle left him with — servicing the huge clocks there. He slips in and out of the station, getting by on stealing food and drink, hoping not to be noticed by the station inspector, Gustav (Sacha Baron Cohen).

Hugo’s a tinkerer, something he picked up from his late father (Jude Law). His favorite project is an old clockwork automaton, a wind-up man he tries to fix with parts stolen from the toy shop run by a cranky old man played by the great Ben Kingsley. When the old man catches Hugo, he seizes the boy’s notebook, full of his father’s drawings and fixes for the automaton. Hugo must work in the shop to win the notebook back, and even then, the mean old man may turn him in to the meaner wounded war vet Gustav, who patrols the station with a Doberman.

Isabel (Chloe Moretz) calls the old man “Pappa Georges,” and even she finds Hugo dubious company, an excuse to try out her burgeoning vocabulary — “You’re nothing but a ... reprobate!”

Hugo must win her over (he takes her to the movies to see Harold Lloyd in Safety Last), elude Gustav and get back that notebook — his last tie to his dead father.

Scorsese uses this vintage Paris railway station set to stage marvelous 3-D chases, on foot — his camera following Hugo up ladders, down alleys, weaving through crowds. Hugo is the best looking 3-D movie since Alice in Wonderland. The director peoples the set with character players (Richard Griffiths, Emily Mortimer, Christopher Lee), and sets in motion subplots about the lonely Gustav, the fate of Hugo’s drunken uncle (Ray Winstone of The Departed) and clues to the automaton’s and Pappa Georges’ past.

Moretz, slinging an English accent, is her usual delightful self, showing Isabel’s love of words — “I think we have to be very clan-DES-tine!” Cohen takes a number of scenes to make any sort of comic impression. And Kingsley makes the journey from ogre to charmer in his usual winning fashion.

But the story — period details and mysteries notwithstanding — is too slight to support this length. It’s an 80-minute bonbon struggling to break out of a 2 hour and 10 minute souffle.

Still, movie buffs, especially fans of early cinema history, will be transfixed by scenes in the latter acts — movie-making, as it was being invented. It’s why Scorsese chose to make the film and it’s where his heart truly is with this material. And it’s no surprise that this corner of his wondrous little picture is where he chose to take a cameo, immortalizing himself in the history of the medium he grew up loving and mastering.

It’s still in us and we’ve got to remove it,” he says. “Along with it just being entertaining and being fresh — it’s an important show.”

NEW YORK — There’s good news for fans of Sherlock Holmes and Downton Abbey: They’re both coming back to PBS next year.

A two-part examination of Bill Clinton’s presidency, a look at some celebrity family trees by Louis Gates and a series on American infrastructure hosted by a former Survivor contestant are all part of PBS’ new spring schedule, the public broadcasting service said Nov. 16.

An abrupt season ending to Downton Abbey with several unanswered questions — including whether the show was even going to return — led to angry phone calls from many fans, said Paula Kerger, PBS president. The first season was only four episodes. The second season, set during World War I, contains seven episodes and starts Jan. 8.

The Masterplace Mystery! presentation of Sherlock, Series 2 is set in 21st century London and will air in three episodes in May, PBS said.

The American Experience documentary on Clinton premieres on President’s Day and features fresh interviews with many in the administration and some of the president’s adversaries. It does not include a new interview with Clinton, Kerger said.

The positive side of profiling such a recent president is that many people within the administration are still alive. The negative side is losing the perspective of history, she said.

Harvard professor Gates is host of Finding Your Roots, a 10-part series that begins March 25. The series will have celebrity juice — Kevin Bacon, Barbara Walters, Tyra Banks and Martha Stewart are among those who have their family roots explored — and Gates tries to tie those family stories to historical trends.
