RESOLVED:

Tips from Dr. Joe Howell, a clinical psychologist who received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia before moving to Calhoun County in 1979. He is in private practice in Anniston, and on clinical staff at North East Alabama Regional Medical Center. He is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Alabama Psychological Association.

Be Happy “I want to be more of a blessing to everyone I meet!”

Make a shift away from yourself, and become aware of other’s needs. Let yourself say “yes” to others’ lives.

Don’t fight negative thoughts by arguing with them mentally. Dismiss them by substituting positive thoughts.

When negative thoughts try to take you over, refuse to give them a home in your mind. Break the chain of thought by simply yelling the word “No!” out loud (or silently to yourself ), and substitute it immediately with a positive feeling or thought.

Do not fight negative people by arguing with or trying to prove your point with them. Having to argue for positiveness creates negativity. Maintain your peace in the face of others’ negativity.

Engage in activities that bring you out of a preoccupation with yourself.

Find your purpose. Finding one’s purpose is essential to feeling joy, wholeness and wellness.

Nurture your own sense of aliveness and purpose throughout the day by having at least a short break to relax and de-stress.

Practice the art of forgiveness. Surrender to the fact that no one is perfect.

Begin each day by plugging into the positive current of aliveness and self-affirmation. Say “yes” to your life

Show up for your life each and every day, and each and every moment.

Dave DeSpagna, 54, of Anniston, asked for advice on sharing his good mood with others.

Dave DeSpagna, 54, of Anniston, is on a mission to be a blessing in 2012. “Our city, state and country need more positive people each and every day,” he said. He believes it is God’s will for him to be a blessing to everyone he meets and says he cannot help but be positive, as he has B+ blood running through his veins.

DeSpagna is originally from New York, but has lived in the area for more than 20 years after being stationed at Fort McClellan.

Despite being out of work, he believes the area’s economy will rebound. Despite having no relatives in the area, he found a family in the church he attends, Harvest Church of God. Despite living on a limited income, he gives back any way he can, by volunteering at his church and at the American Legion Post 111.

He credits his positive attitude for helping him deal with all of life’s situations. “It’s so simple,” said DeSpagna. “Think what the world would be like if you greeted everyone you met with a smile and an encouraging handshake.”

10 EXERCISE TIPS Tips from Ann Angell, program center manager for the Oxford Y for Now. She has worked for the YMCA for 28 years, teaching fitness and personal training. She is a certification specialist/trainer for AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America). She travels monthly to certify new fitness instructors across the south. She has a bachelor’s degree in exercise science.

Do not make unrealistic goals. We do not need to set ourselves up for disappointment. If you want to lose 80 pounds, give yourself time to do that. A year would be realistic, three months would not.

Find a buddy who can walk with you. Having someone to talk to and confide in can make the journey much easier. Also, they will hold you accountable, and you can do the same for them.

Start by making a schedule to plan when and where you are going to walk or bike or whatever exercise method you choose. If you schedule exercise into your day, you will be more likely to stick to it. Usually morning is best, because as the days goes on, we start to lose our energy and motivation, and it becomes easier to blow it off.

Cut out processed foods such as TV dinners and pizza. The price may be right, but what price do these foods have on your heart and body? They just make us feel really sluggish, and when we are sluggish we are not very interested in exercising. Just as you plan exercise into your schedule, you can plan menus that revolve more around eating fresh fruits and vegetables and whole-wheat foods. Eating the right foods can give you the energy and fuel you need to up your workout and make the progressions you need to succeed.

Be prepared for any kind of weather. Just because it is 20 degrees outside is no excuse. If you are dressed properly, with something warm on your head and hands and with layers you can easily remove, you will not feel the cold once you get moving. Conversely, if it is 95 degrees and humid, you can also dress properly and get in a workout. In the heat, be sure to exercise early or late, not at midday.

If you fall off the healthy wagon and backslide a little, do not let that end the journey. No one is perfect, and we all want to take time off from exercise or eat that chocolate cake. Get back up the next day and get back into it. Life is full of critical moments when we decide what we will do next. Make sure that decision is the right one. No one will do it for you. YOU are the one who can make that difference.

Before you get started, have someone do measurements of your hips, waist, etc., and write them down. You will want to see your progress in numbers, and you will need to refer to that baseline. You can get a body fat test at your local gym, or just something as simple as a tape measure can tell the story.

Make sure as you progress and start to get into the routine that you keep upping the ante. Do not do the same thing in the sixth week that you did in the first week. Your body gets used to a workout, and it is wise to change it often for the surprise factor. You will need to reach out of your comfort zone to see results. If you walk on a flat course every day, go somewhere where there are lots of hills. If you walk on a treadmill day after day, try going outside and walking and running. Try running one block, then next time two blocks. Before you know it, it will take more to challenge your body.

The key is to move. Move lots! 10,000 steps a day is a good amount. Slap on a pedometer and start your journey. Record your miles, your workouts and take ownership of your body.

RESOLVED: ‘I’ve got to lose weight!’

Norman Williams, 62, of Anniston, asked for advice on getting active again.

Norman Williams, 62, of Anniston, made a New Year’s Resolution to lose weight. He currently weighs 260 pounds, but would like to drop to 180 pounds.

He gained a lot of weight after having foot surgery in May, but he hopes his doctor will release him soon to go back to work at Tapecraft Corporation in Oxford and to resume a walking routine.

Williams describes himself as “an old bachelor who lives on TV dinners,” who

was moderately active before his foot problems. “I’ve been pretty healthy all my life, but I don’t feel good this big,” he said.

He is “100 percent sure” he can lose the weight. “I gained a lot of weight in 1980 and lost it,” he said. “But when I quit smoking seven years ago, I really gained back a lot of weight.”

Williams’ desire to lose weight and adopt a healthier lifestyle is motivated by the loss of his older brother, who died at age 65 from a heart attack. “Unless I can lose a lot of weight, I believe I will die in less than five years,” he said.

10 diet tips Tips from Marchale Burton, Calhoun County Extension Service. Marchale Burton is an urban regional extension agent with the Calhoun County Extension Service. She has worked for the Extension Service for 11 years. Her area of expertise includes human nutrition, diet and health.

Eat healthier. Eating healthier foods does not mean the food has to taste bad or have no taste.

It means that we must have more control of what we are eating.

Become a label reader. Know how many carbohydrates are in a serving size, know how many serving sizes are in the container, know how many servings you are eating. When we prepare food at home, we know what’s in our food. We know how much sugar, salt and fat we are consuming.

Invest in a good, healthy cookbook, and do not be afraid to alter recipes. When I look at a recipe, I think about making it healthier. In other words, experiment with recipes. Some cookbooks offer suggestions about substituting oil, salt, sugar and fat in recipes. Applesauce can be used in some recipes to lower the amount of oil used. Substitute low-fat cream cheese for regular cream cheese.

Buy whole-wheat pastas and breads. When cooking, use whole wheat instead of white flour. The biggest complaint I hear about whole wheat is that some people do not like the taste. Our taste buds are so used to salt, sugar and fat we do not appreciate the taste of healthy food.

Drink more water. Most of us do not drink adequate amounts of water.

Do not cook vegetables with fat back and ham hocks. Smoked turkey would be a better choice.

Choose cuts of meats that have less fat and are leaner.

Bake, broil or grill rather than frying.

Always try to have a healthy snack on hand. Sometimes we may want something that is sweet or salty. Try to always have something at home that you can eat that will satisfy cravings.

Last but not least, find some type of exercise that you can do that you enjoy. For me, it’s walking. I like it because it’s very inexpensive. I do it when I want to, and it’s my time for me.

Anne Powers, 71, of Munford, asked for advice on cutting back on sugar.

RESOLVED: ‘I need to eat healthier’

Anne Powers, 71, of Munford, is known for her baked goods, particularly sweets. She has won numerous cooking awards for her culinary skills, and recently published her first cookbook, Five Generations of Great Recipes. But her success in the kitchen has lead to her failure to keep her weight and her blood sugar at healthy levels. She is a borderline diabetic, with a recent fasting blood glucose level of 149.

Powers says she has tried every diet imaginable.

“I’ve always had a problem with my weight,” she said.

“I lose weight and gain it right back.

“I don’t exercise much because of arthritis and back trouble,” she added. “I hope once my weight comes down a little, I’ll get to exercise more.”

Powers is motivated to reach her goals so she will not have to take medication or shots to control her blood sugar. “The very thought of having to prick my finger every day is going to keep me in line,” she said.

She feels she has a 100 percent chance of keeping her New Year’s Resolution because she plans to make lifestyle changes that include eating a healthier diet, paying more attention to labels and counting on her family to stop her when she starts sampling too many of her own baked goods.
