‘The Cat’s Table’ not just a boy’s adventure tale The Cat’s Table by Michael Ondaatje; Knopf, 2011; 269 pages; $26

Halfway through his exhilarating new novel, Michael Ondaatje has the writer at the core of his book explain that “there is always a story ahead of you. Barely existing. Only gradually do you attach yourself to it and feed it. You discover the carapace that will contain and test your character. You find in this way the path of your life.” Ondaatje wraps this truth in a coming-of-age novel that is as good as any book likely to be found this year.

It is the early 1950s when a very young 11-year-old, “green as he could be about the world ... climbed aboard the first and only ship of his life.” The Oronsay leaves Ceylon bound for London with young Michael, two other boys and an assortment of other “insignificant” passengers confined to the cat’s table, the one far removed from the Captain’s Table.

At the cat’s table, Michael discovers petty thieves, acrobats from a small rural circus, card players, bird enthusiasts, botanists and tailors. They are introduced to jazz and bridge and literature.

He becomes acquainted with most of the ship’s crew, from kennel keepers to captain. Most winningly, he meets two

boys his own age: Ramadhin, overly cautious because of an irregular heartbeat; and Cassius, who’s as reckless as Michael.

There is also the criminal in irons who walks the deck late each night.

As they try to relieve the boredom they find at sea, the three boys devise as many ways as they can to break rules as they observe the peccadilloes of the others confined to the periphery of the ship’s dining room and culture.

Stories unfold, often overheard from a lifeboat the boys hide in, all touching Michael in ways only the adult Michael will come to comprehend.

It is Michael’s interest in a trio of women that structures the novel. He, and especially Cassius, are taken with the silent Asuntha, whose mysterious agenda becomes harrowingly evident at the close of the novel. There is Miss Lasqueti, who always seems to be more than she shows the world. Especially, there is Michael’s exquisite older cousin, Emily, who, though she is someone who will never be seated at a cat’s table, shares Michael’s secrets, shows him how to see himself

“with a distant eye,” and allows him to confront his manhood.

Yet The Cat’s Table is by no means just a boy’s adventure tale. Michael Ondaatje has beautifully captured in his seamless, deceptively simple prose, a writer’s attempt to strip events down to their essential truths, only to discover that supposedly essential truths are really just partial ones.

One of the most beautifully rendered illustrations of this discovery is in a “2nd Portrait” of Miss Lasqueti that reveals her as something other than the supposed spinster she appears to be.

Ondaatje encourages us to see with many sets of eyes. Some of the most lyrical passages involve young Michael’s observations re-seen by the adult Michael, now a writer, who understands that final judgment should never really exist, who continues to see in that threeweek sea voyage of his youth the only truth to hold on to, that “it would be strangers like these, at the various Cat’s Tables of my life, who would alter me.”

At first glance, Grippando seems to have written a thriller that reflects the public’s distrust of Wall Street. But once the twists start flying, the narrative becomes something altogether different.

Readers looking for a great thriller will see a master at the top of his game in Need You Now. Folks looking for an in-depth look at the machinations of Wall Street mixed with suspense will be disappointed, since little of that world is revealed.

IN BRIEF Duggar Mountain TV show debuts Saturday night Bluegrass and country music lovers don’t have to leave their house to enjoy local music.

Live at Dugger Mountain Music Hall, a new locally produced television show, has been picked up by the Legacy Network and will be available in 91 million households across America, said Tom Potts, of Potts Marketing Group. The 30-minute show premieres at 7:30 p.m. Saturday on Channel 24 and features singer/songwriter Raymond Matthews and local musicians Tony Yardley and Lloyd Andrews.

Dugger Mountain Music Hall was created by Bob McLeod and Lloyd Andrews, and serves in association with Our Father’s Arms, a ministry that helps those struggling with addiction or abuse.

Bonnie Raitt to release first album in 7 years NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Bonnie Raitt is releasing a new album in 2012, her first in seven years.

Slipstream, out April 10, follows a long break from studio work for the Grammy-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member. She lost her parents, her brother and her best friend.

“I hadn’t stopped moving in a very long time so I really wanted to take a total break and not concentrate on making a new record or what I was going to do next,” Raitt said. “So that was really valuable because I waited until I was really ready to come back.”

Slipstream is the 62-year-old slide guitarist’s first album since 2005’s Souls Alike and will be the first release on her own record label, Redwing Records. The 12-track album will feature four songs recorded with producer Joe Henry and his musicians, which she describes as experimental.

The remainder of the album is selfproduced with her touring band.

First lady makes appearance on ‘iCarly’

NEW YORK — Teen star Miranda Cosgrove says she doesn’t usually get nervous about taping episodes of her Nickelodeon comedy, iCarly, but that changed when first lady Michelle Obama taped an appearance on the show.

“I’ve been doing the show for a long time and I usually don’t get nervous, but having the first lady on the set, I was really nervous,” laughed Cosgrove, 18, in an interview Wednesday.

Nickelodeon and the White House want to show support for U.S. military families with a cameo by the first lady on the show.

On iCarly, Cosgrove plays Carly Shay, the daughter of an Air Force colonel who is serving overseas.

In an episode titled, “iMeet the First Lady,” Carly gets upset when her father’s return from active duty is canceled because he is deployed again. Her friends decide to surprise her with a live feed to her father during an iCarly webcast. After Mrs. Obama sees the webcast, she praises Carly for being such a supportive daughter to a father who is serving his country.

Cosgrove said that despite being nervous about meeting Mrs. Obama, she found her quite approachable, calling the first lady a “nice, pretty normal person” who even danced with the cast during a regular segment called “Random

To promote the show, cast members will appear at four screening events for military families. The screenings will be held in Miramar, Calif., on Jan. 9; Groton,

Cosgrove said the goal is to “let (military) kids know how important their parents are.”

Kid band Vazquez Sounds takes Mexico by storm

MEXICO CITY — Ten-year-old Angie Vazquez has become an Internet phenom belting out a soulful cover of Brit pop star Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” In an online video seemingly shot at home, her teenage brothers Abelardo and Gustavo play the keyboard, guitar and drums.

The video drew almost 18 million views, interviews on Mexico’s major television networks and a mention on Good Morning America. Within weeks of its Nov. 11 posting, the so-called Vazquez Sounds signed a contract with Sony Music Mexico. They released their first album this week that includes another Internet smash cover, of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You.” Their nearly overnight success online evokes the now legendary saga of Canadian ‘tween idol Justin Bieber, who was discovered after his mother posted online amateur footage of him crooning and strumming.

“We make a lot of videos of a lot of things, but my son Abelardo wanted to record this song and share it with friends and family,” said father Abelardo Vazquez in a telephone interview from the family’s hometown of Mexicali, on the California border. “We really didn’t expect the cover to become such a phenomenon on the Web.” Before you call the Vazquez clan Mexico’s version of Bieber-mania, consider this: The elder Abelardo Vazquez is a professional music producer instrumental in creating the sound of well-known Mexican bands such as Reik and Nikki Clan, also from the border.

The videos of Angie and her brothers in their home studio are also professionally produced, mixed and lighted, with slick camera work.

Abelardo Vazquez says he’s not driving his kids into the music business, though he acknowledges they’ve had a leg up.

“My kids have had a musical education since they were very young, because I have worked pro-

ducing groups for many years,” the father said.

When the video sparked interest in a few million people beyond the Vazquez’s immediate circle, the decision to cut a CD was natural, Vazquez said.

He added that he retains total control over the project, and Sony music is working as a distributor.

“The contract with Sony isn’t the traditional type,” Vazquez said.

“It isn’t the typical contract with record companies, in which they used to control the artists’ career.

This is a family project.”

Although Vazquez has had an eight-year relationship with Sony, Roberto Lopez, president of the label, said he and his team were unaware of the Vazquez Sounds and first heard the group like everyone else — on the Internet.

Working with such a young group poses special challenges and “very strong personal care,” Lopez said.

“It is something special because they are children, and we want them to stay in school,” he said.

“The agreement was that their involvement in music, which has been going on for years now, would continue without affecting their lifestyle.”

Vazquez said other record companies had expressed interest, but Sony was the only one that met his conditions for the kids. Cynics note that Sony is also the label that signed some of Vazquez’s other acts.

The CD includes the original cover of “Rolling in the Deep,” a remix of that crowd pleaser and, at least in its online version, a more wobbly cover of the Mariah Carey song. Coincidentally, it’s the same song Bieber included in his holiday season “Under the Mistletoe” disc.

In the meantime, the Vazquez Sounds have been invited to perform on television programs in the United States, Italy and England.

But they can pick and choose.

“The kids are not obligated to do promotional work like other acts,” said the elder Vazquez. “We want them to live a life like any other child their age.”

A look at favorite albums from 2011 It’s that time of year again — the beginning of a new year, that is. And during this time of reflection, it’s only appropriate that we think about the best things last year had to offer. So without further ado, I present my top 11 albums of 2011.

11. 21, Adele It’s been a mixed bag for Adele fans this year. On one hand, her album 21, along with superhit “Rolling in the Deep,” was released. But then actually seeing the British import in concert this year was difficult as she struggled with health issues. Regardless, 21 upgraded Adele to genuine superstar, and it’s a great album in its own right. She continues to belt out her soulful lyrBobby ics and redefine what is Bozeman typical and expected of female pop stars these Pop days.

Cultured 10. The King is Dead, The Decemberists If even just for the song “June Hymn,” I think this album deserves to be on this year’s list. And the album’s other songs hold up well, too. Longtime Decemberists fans may not hold this album in high regard, mainly because of the deviation from the band’s topical style, but I’m not one to punish a band for expanding on its sound. The simplistic beauty and always incredible lyrics from the Decemberists give this album a place on my list.

9. Nostalgia, Ultra, Frank Ocean I was listening to another album on this list, Watch the Throne, and the first song, “No Church in the Wild,” featured Frank Ocean, and even though it had so many talented artists, Ocean’s part really stood out. Nostalgia, Ultra really surprised me with both its creative sampling (my favorite being “American Wedding” sampling The Eagles’ “Hotel California”) and his songwriting, specifically on the track “Novacane.”

8. Ceremonials, Florence + The Machine I feel like I might have been too harsh in my original review of Florence + The Machine’s most recent album, Ceremonials. It’s big and powerful. And it contrasts its dark and moody side with swelling, bright music. This album really grew on

me, and it ended up being one of those albums I couldn’t quit listening to.

7. Take Care, Drake Drake, despite his success, fame, fortune, confidence and good looks, still found time to feel sorry for himself. The mark of a good artist, however, is taking that celebrity angst and turning it into something both relatable and beautiful. It’s rare when an artist can break into Top-40 airspace being this emotional and sincere, but Drake thrives in that environment.

6. Bon Iver, Bon Iver Justin Vernon and company have proved that they have a starting power with their self-titled second album. It’s intimate and inviting. And then it feels so huge at times, and so full of discovery that you just want to put the album on repeat and listen to it over and over again.

5. Past Life Martyred Saints, EMA Erika M. Anderson’s Past Life Martyred Saints is another album that was a great debut for a great artist who has made this strangely minimalistic, dark and beautiful album. While the album threatens to crumble under its own self-seriousness sometimes, it never really does.

4. Hurry up, We’re Dreaming, M83

If you haven’t listened to the French synth-pop band M83, you’re doing yourself a disservice. One of the best-sounding bands around, the bright, but oftendreamy synthetics complement the wonderful textures, detail and large sweeping aspects of the album. M83 managed to present a diversity of sounds and textures in a coherent manner, and in doing so put together one of the best albums of the year.

3. Strange Mercy, St. Vincent Intellectual and stimulating, Annie Clark’s Strange Mercy requires that you pay attention, to grab hold of every detail, because she makes every detail important.

The album threatens to overwhelm and sometimes drown the listener, but never does. What it is, is gorgeous and huge — a worthwhile endeavor for anyone who listens.

2. Helplessness Blues, Fleet Foxes What an album. I’ve listened to this album probably more than any other on this list, except for my No. 1 pick. It’s so sincere and catchy in ways that never feel cheap or overdone. The title track, “Helplessness Blues,” just begs to be listened to over and over again. Thematically different and more introspective than Fleet Foxes’ previous work, it shines incredibly bright.

Some surprises among Producers Guild awards noms

LOS ANGELES — Hollywood’s complicated movie awards season didn’t get any clearer Tuesday morning as the Producers Guild of America announced its 10 nominees for the Darryl F. Zanuck producer of the year award in theatrical motion pictures.

Some of the nominees were expected, including The Artist, The Descendants, Hugo, Moneyball and War Horse, but there were some mild surprises in the mix, such as The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Ides of March and Bridesmaids.

Rounding out the nominees were The Help and Midnight in Paris.

The PGA award is seen as a bellwether for the best picture Academy Award.

The last time the two didn’t see eye to eye was five years ago when Little Miss Sunshine won the PGA and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chose The Departed as best film.

“This one means a lot to us,” said Ides producer Grant Heslov in a statement. “To get recognized by your fellow producers for an adult drama with a $12.5-million budget, that was really just a labor of love, it’s just terrific.”

Woody Allen’s sister, Letty Aronson, has produced her brother’s films since 1994’s Bullets Over Broadway, said she was surprised with the PGA nomination for Midnight in Paris because “we hardly get nominated for anything.

It’s particularly gratifying because it is a group of producers (on Midnight) who understand the whole challenge of putting together the money. So it’s particularly gratifying.”

Apps take e-books beyond reading

MINNEAPOLIS — You can buy the Kevin Kling-Chris Monroe picture book Big Little Brother for $17.95 and read it to your child. Or you can buy the iPad app of Big Little Brother for $7.99 and hear Kling read it himself — and also watch the characters move and hear the toys talk.

Book apps for tablets and smartphones and enhanced e-books for e-readers are going far beyond the transfer of book text to Kindle screen.

By bringing audio, video, animation and games to what was once the simple printed page, apps are beginning to fundamentally change our understanding of what makes a book a book.

So far, the trend has been cautious, but publishers predict enhancements will be common within two years.

“It’s clearly a market waiting to be fed,” said Corinne Helman, vice president of digital publishing and business development for Harper Collins children’s books. “This is still very, very early days.”

“I think this is going to be a huge deal,” said Dan Leary, design and production manager for the Minnesota Historical Society Press. “It’s really changing what a book is.”

Book apps can be as modest as Big Little Brother, with just a little animation and audio. Or they can be as elaborate as Fancy Nancy Dress Up, which allows children to design outfits, dress Fancy Nancy and drop her into the story.

Enhanced e-books include all kinds of supplemental material: travel books are embedded with film clips, language books with audio, cookbooks with step-by-step videos.

There are even book apps that have never been printed books, such as David Sedaris’ David’s Diary, six animated videos inspired by his diary entries.

Image-heavy books, such as picture books and photo books, lend themselves well to apps. “The iPad does images better than you can print them,” Leary said. “The quality is like a transparency in a lightbox.”

Minnesota photographer Jim Brandenburg turned his award-winning 1998 book, Chased by the Light, into an app. It contains the original images of northern Minnesota, additional photos from the revised softcover edition, After the Storm, and 17 video clips from the documentary about the book.

“Each of the video clips are positioned right on that image,” said Heidi Brandenburg, the photographer’s daughter and manager.

“So as you look at it, Jim is talking about why he chose that subject and what he was thinking.”

You can also toggle from an original image to a photo of the same place, taken since the BWCA blowdown. “This is our very first app, but it won’t be our last,” Brandenburg said. “For photography, it’s just unbelievable. It gives a whole new life to the images.”

Apps of children’s books are particularly attractive to busy parents, Helman said.

“How often do you whip out a phone and say, ‘I’ll buy myself 20 minutes of silence?’

I think parents feel good about book apps because it’s still a book and the child is still learning.”

If parents are too busy to read to the child—or have already read the book aloud 50 times—the app can take over. “It means, in some respect, that the kid is now spending more time with books because it doesn’t require the parent to be there,” Helman said.

“If it gets children interested in books, it’s good,” said Root, the Minneapolis author of more than 40 books for children and an instructor in Hamline University’s MFA program in writing for children.

“But the most important thing about a

picture book is that you sit down and read it with a kid.”

A parent can point to a picture and say, “What sound does a frog make?” Root said.

“And the child might make the sound. But if every time you come to that page you can push the frog and it makes a noise, you’ve handed over some of the interactiveness of the picture book to this prepackaged shape.”

Lori Helman, associate professor of literacy education at the University of Minnesota and co-director of the Minnesota Center for Reading Research (and no relation to Harper Collins’ Corinne Helman), said human relations are crucial to child development.

“We need a lot of opportunities for faceto-face interaction so children can learn what it means to be human,” she said. “A developing person, whether they’re 2 or 7, needs to be able to ask questions and check out their understanding. And no app can be responsive to all the questions and thoughts and wonderings that a young person needs.

You need people.”

That said, Helman added, apps and ebooks can give kids more access to books and put libraries at their fingertips.

“If we’re using these things as little baby-

sitters, I think kids will get tired of them,” she said. “But if we use them to enhance our interaction, imagine the great conversation that could spark.”

While technology is fueling this trend, it is also slowing it down.

Apps must be written one way for Apple products, another way for Droids. App stores don’t have a separate category for book apps, making them hard to find. And devices are changing so fast that no one dares invest heavily in any one direction.

“It’s been a sort of three steps forward, three steps back,” said Terry Adams, who heads e-book and digital publishing for the Hachette Book Group, which includes Little, Brown. “It is the wild, wild West in this marketplace.”

The biggest concern, Leary says, is permanence.

“The best long-term storage of anything is the book,” he said. “It’s still the most future-proof thing in this office. The book version of the Kling-Monroe project will still be functional in 50 years. The iPad version of the book—I will be surprised if anyone has a device that will still be functional then.

“These things will have a two-year life span, and then you develop for the next piece of technology.”

There’s a lot of intricate plot work that brings the prince and Cinder into fairly constant contact and keeps the romantic heart of this book pumping. Their unlikely and possibly ill-fated connection may have started with a broken android, but it’s heightened with subplots involving the plague, a potential invasion of the Earth by lunar forces, Cinder’s secret cyborg status and, of course, the ball.

Whether Cinder is headed for a happy ending like her fairy-tale inspiration is far from clear when she shows up at the prince’s palace in a grease-stained ball gown teetering on her undersized robotic foot, but readers will be cheering for this extremely likable cyborg and eagerly awaiting Cinder’s sequel.

‘W.E.L.D.E.R.’ leads parade of iPad gems

So you just got an iPad for Christmas. You already have all the essentials loaded — Facebook, Twitter, iBooks, whatever news app you prefer.

Now it’s time to get serious and start learning what the iPad was really built for: games.

There are more than 26,000 iPad games available from Apple’s App Store, with something for every imaginable taste. And the prices are so low you can build an impressive library for less than the cost of a single Xbox game. Here are some of my favorites from the last few months.

“W.E.L.D.E.R.” (Highline Games, $3.99): For the record, it stands for “Word Examination Laboratory for Dynamic Extraction and Reassessment,” but never mind the strained acronym. What “W.E.L.D.E.R.” really stands for is the iPad’s most addictive word game, a clever combination of “Bejeweled,” “Boggle” and “Scrabble.”

The object is to slide letter tiles around an 8-by-8 grid, forming words of four or more letters. However, you won’t get far unless you figure out how to combine score-multiplying gold tiles with the limited number of moves you’re given. If you’re burned out on “Words With Friends,” let this provide your new crossword puzzle fix.

“Infinity Blade II” (Chair Entertainment, $6.99): If you want to show off your new toy, there are few better demonstrations than this sword-fighting epic. It’s a series of one-on-one battles in which dodging, parrying and blocking attacks are just as important as slashing your foes. This sequel adds some role-playing elements and more alternate paths to the goal, but the core attraction remains the same: bone-crunching combat in breathtaking environments.

“Chocolate Fix” (ThinkFun, $2.99): Take nine candies — three shapes, each in three colors — and arrange them in a 3-by-3 box. If you’re a Sudoku maven, that probably sounds simple. But at the expert level, the clues to which candy goes where are more abstract, making this innocent-looking

“Bag It!” (Hidden Variable Studios, $1.99): It’s another adventure in food packaging! This time, you’re a clerk cramming groceries into a paper bag.

The goal is to fill each bag as tightly as possible without breaking anything; if you put a watermelon on top of a carton of eggs, you’re asking for trouble.

The groceries themselves are endearingly anthropomorphized, making “Bag It!” one of the cutest puzzle games around.

“Blueprint 3D” (FDG Entertainment, 99 cents): Each screen in this game is a seemingly random assortment of lines floating in three dimensions. When you rotate the space, you can see how some lines might fit together. Eventually, they snap in place to create a 2-D image of a familiar object — a house, perhaps, or the Eiffel Tower. The 200-plus puzzles here aren’t terribly demanding, but they’re undeniably satisfying.

So 2011 fizzled at the movies. Attendance and box office were down — by some measures, back to 1996 levels.

The familiar franchises did OK, but audiences avoided plenty of good-tonear-great movies, as well as the weak ones.

The mega-hits were few and very far between. And the holidays were a sobering experience for those banking on brand names like Spielberg (War Horse, The Adventures of Tintin) or Matt Damon (We Bought a Zoo) to pack them in.

The awards contenders may gather some steam as the conversation turns toward Oscar.

But right now, they’re a pretty anemic looking lot.

The 3-D boom turned bust. So when you see previews of a coming attraction that say “in 3D” — and there are scores of those in 2012 — be certain that the studios want you to know that the title will also be shown in 2-D, for those who don’t want to spend 3-D money (i.e., most of us).

What about 2012? There are more 3-D titles, more remakes and sequels and more movies plainly aimed at the more important overseas audience.

But Bella is back (Breaking Dawn Part 2, Nov. 21), and Bond (Skyfall, Nov. 7). And Batman. Bourne returns (The Bourne Legacy, Aug. 3) without Jason Bourne or Matt Damon. And those Men in Black are back. So are The Expendables, Tyler Perry, Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained, Dec. 25) Ghost Rider, Barnabas Collins (Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, May 11), the

Madagascar zoo animals (June 8) and the extinct stand-up comics of Ice Age (July 13).

And those American Pie kids. Why, why, more American Pie (American Reunion, April 6)?

Finding Nemo, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and Beauty and the Beast return — in 3-D. Remakes? Judge Dredd (Dredd, Sept. 21), Total Recall (Aug. 3) and even Spider-Man (The Amazing SpiderMan, July 3).

Midseason TV: Old favorites and a f lood of new shows

Welcome to television’s midseason — a time when network programmers hit the “restart” button and try to atone for the sins of the fall.

OK, so maybe The Playboy Club was a flop for beleaguered NBC. But now Smash just might be the hit it craves. And though Pan Am didn’t exactly take off for ABC, perhaps The River and/or GCB will.

Bring on the new shows, the fresh blood ... and the excitement?

Yes, the excitement. In years past, the midseason crop often had an “afterthought” quality to it, with replacement shows that were deemed not quite good enough to make the fall lineups.

But this year could be different.

Many TV critics back in September were already talking about how the midseason shows, in some cases, seemed to be more ambitious, provocative and promising than the fall fare.

On Fox, for example, both Alcatraz and Touch have generated buzz. The former is another moody island mystery from J.J. Abrams (Lost), and the latter has Kiefer Sutherland returning in a role very different from Jack Bauer.

Of course, Fox always has reason to be stoked at midseason because it means the return of American Idol, the talent-show juggernaut that dominates the ratings and makes rival networks shudder in fear. But now NBC has its own musical sensation in The Voice, which will get a noisy Season 2 launch right after the Super Bowl on Feb. 5.

Other returning broadcast favorites include 30 Rock (NBC), Undercover Boss (CBS) and Dancing With the Stars (ABC). And on The CW, One Tree Hill is back for its final season.

But the networks don’t have a monopoly on buzz. PBS, for example, can hardly wait to kick off Season 2 of Downton Abbey,
