And there is more. After all, Oedipus Rex is about a man who kills his father and marries his mother. All of that happens, but Guterson refuses to sensationalize the events. In fact, one of the surprises of the book is how deftly he handles Ed and Diane’s “honeymoon” after their marriage at the Chapel of the Flowers in Las Vegas.

Ed King is not intended to be a pointby-point recreation of its source. It quietly, bravely, becomes a treatise on what contemporary life has become.

It reminds us that we are in control of nothing about our lives and loves. It is a warning about the future, about waging war against “the historical truth that great companies decline and fall.”

So do we, David Guterson reminds us, so do we.

whodunit may be a surprise (but the narrative’s trajectory and the dearth of suspects suggests the mystery is not the point), there’s hardly any tension. We witness Margot’s cons in flashbacks, which drive the story forward, though we know or can guess how it will turn out.

I wanted to like this book, and did appreciate several parts: Lawrence’s marriage and how he feels about the woman he’s spent most of his adult life with are particularly well done. Gottlieb’s writing is strong; sadly his subject matter is not, and The Face Thief is less than the sum of its parts.

The appeal of the Eagle Eye will likely be extremely low, as many console gamers are used to, and prefer, using their machine’s controller.

PC gamers might prefer to use this device while playing first-person shooter titles. I wouldn’t see much of an advantage for use outside of that genre.

The Eagle Eye Converter 3.0 works as advertised as is recommended to console gamers that want the pinpoint accuracy that only a keyboard and mouse combo can provide.

JSU student gets education in venues across county

Daniel Hughes may be at Jacksonville State to get his degree, but his real education comes from the stage, where over the past year he has made a name for himself as a guitarist in venues across Calhoun County.

The English major and Mentone native has only been performing for less than a year, but his name is quickly becoming a staple on the local scene.

Hughes started playing at the age of 12, but never flirted with the idea of venturing onstage until arriving at the university.

It wasn’t until the Christmas holidays in 2010 when Hughes and a few other colleagues from his job at local restaurant Struts ventured down to Pelham’s one night and, after taking in a live show, Hughes left expressing his interest in wanting to perform onstage. One thing led to another, and Hughes began his career playing his first show at Brother’s in Jacksonville on Feb. 5, 2011.

His first night was a little “terrifying,” though.

“When you think about the fact that the Allman Brothers and Alabama and several other big-name artists have played on that same stage before, it was a shock that my first show was going to be there,” he reflects of walking in their footsteps. Things took off from that point, however, and nearly a year later, Hughes has played just more than 100 live shows.

“After I played that first show, it was just addicting.

That’s all I wanted to do,” he says.

“I try not to write the same thing over and over,” he says of his songs, which falls into the alt-country genre. “It annoys me when you see somebody playing live, and they’re playing originals, and I love originals … but I don’t like it when somebody’s up there, and all of their songs are originals, but they all sound the same.”

How he’s able to do it all, though, can’t be pinpointed to one specific tip.

“I guess I just manage

my time better than I think I do,” he says, remembering how at the beginning of his career he balanced playing two to three shows a week, school and his job at Struts.

“I don’t know how in the world I was able to do that, honestly.”

Even though Hughes has since left his cooking apron behind, his focus always goes back to school, where he maintains a 4.0 average — until this past semester, when he made a B, his first since seventh grade. (“That didn’t have anything to do with music, it was really hard class, honestly,” he explains). His heavy

canvassing of the area has earned him a modest following, but don’t expect Hughes to get too big for his britches anytime soon.

“I’ve been recognized a few times, but I don’t think of myself as a celebrity or anything, and I don’t expect anybody else to freak out when they see me either.

I’m a student, too — I’m here to get an education.”

While Hughes’ shows are often too late for his parents, who still live in Mentone, to see, he maintains that they love his second career.

“They’ve always pushed me to just do what makes me happy,” he says. “They bought me my first guitar.

They pushed me to work more in music and to learn more about music.”

Hughes’ plans after he graduates (preferably a semester early in December), are still up in the air, but the idea of going to Nashville and trying his luck as a professional musician seems enticing.

“If it were to happen that I was able to make a career out of [playing music], I would feel blessed beyond belief. It’s truly what I love to do,” he says.

Even if he were to find a job and work full time, his passion will always lie in his music.

“No matter what, I’m going to play music. It doesn’t matter if it’s my fulltime job or it’s just something for fun on the side.

I’m going to play music no matter what.”

Hughes performs regularly at Locomex Mexican restaurant in Jacksonville on Wednesday nights, and will be featured at 8 tonight at The Peerless Saloon on West 10th Street in Anniston.

‘30 Rock’ star back at work after hospitalization SALT LAKE CITY — Comedian and 30 Rock cast member Tracy Morgan is back at work in New York after a brief hospitalization in Utah.

Morgan’s publicist, Lewis Kay, says Morgan appreciates fans’ concern. The actor was hospitalized Sunday while attending the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, where the elevation is 7,000 feet.

Kay says Morgan suffered from exhaustion and altitude. Morgan also has diabetes.

Kay says no drugs or alcohol were found in Morgan’s system.

NEW YORK — Since its beginnings in the 1970s, rap music has transformed from an underground, street-based sound to a definitive part of pop culture, transcending race and becoming one of the strongest — and most prolific — voices of today’s generation. But at the Grammy Awards, rap has had a long-lasting losing streak in the top categories.

The hip-hop sound — first recognized at the 1989 Grammys — has garnered numerous prestigious nominations over the years, and for 10 of the last 14 years, rap acts have either led or tied for most Grammy nominations. But rarely will a hip-hop act win one of the show’s top four honors — album, song and record of the year, along with best new artist. Instead, rap acts tend to win rap awards.

50 Cent, who won his first and only Grammy two years ago, believes Grammy voters are out-of-touch and need a fresh outlook on what’s going on in contemporary music.

“I think that the board is a lot older and they’re conservative, so some of the content in the music is offensive on some level,” said 50 Cent, who famously interrupted Evanescence’s best new artist speech by walking onstage when he lost to the rock group in 2004. “There’s a lot of people that don’t accept that hip-hop culture is now pop culture.”

This year, hip-hop leads the Grammys in nominations again, with Kanye West earning seven; it’s his third year as the show’s top-nominated act, and his fourth overall (he tied Mariah Carey and John Legend for most nominations at the

2006 Grammys). While his song “All of the Lights” is up for song of the year, his critically revered fifth album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, didn’t score an album of the year nomination, a shock to many. Even Jimmy Jam — the chair emeritus of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences — was surprised by West’s snub.

“I think he’s one of the genius artists, and I’m saying this as a person who’s worked with Michael Jackson and Prince, so I don’t throw that word around lightly,” Jam said. “So, yes, I was surprised.”

West’s album with Jay-Z, Watch the Throne, was also left out of the top album category; both CDs are nominated for best rap album.

Jay-Z, who once boycotted the Grammys because of the show’s lack of love for hip-hop, says Grammy nominations are “cool,” but he doesn’t use the accolades as a barometer of his success.

“The Grammys and all of those other things, they’re fine and it’s a good way for everyone to get together amongst their peers and collect some trophies at the end of the night, but my whole thing is for the people, as long as the people accept it — that’s my real Grammy,” Jay-Z said. “As long as it connects with an audience in a way.”

But Steve Stoute, the former record executive who accused the Grammys of being irrelevant last year in a full-page advertisement in The New York Times after Eminem and Justin Bieber lost top awards, says there is a bigger problem.

Stoute believes The Recording Academy doesn’t have board members who understand hip-hop as a true art form.

“If (The Recording Academy) under-

stood that, then (rappers) would be scoring technical points,” he said. “They don’t get the technical points.”

In Grammy history, 14 hip-hop albums have received nominations for album of the year. Lauryn Hill has the distinction of being the first hip-hop artist to win album of the year for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1999, but the album, while featuring rap, was heavy on R&B. Hill also won best new artist that year, the second time a rapbased act had done so following Arrested Development’s win in 1993. A rapper hasn’t won the award since.

OutKast, the alternative, genre-bending hip-hop duo, followed in Hill’s footsteps with an album of the year win in 2004 for the double disc Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. It, too, was not strictly hip-hop, as Andre 3000 blended rock and even jazz for his half of the project.

But while there have been high-profile wins, what stands out more are the losses.

No rapper has ever won record or song of the year, and both Eminem and West, each nominated three times, have failed to win the album of the year trophy in years where they appeared to be critical favorites.

At last year’s Grammys, three of the five songs nominated for record of the year were rap smashes. Lady Antebellum’s crossover hit, “Need You Now,” ended up taking away the record and song of the year honors.

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, the leader and drummer of the Roots, says the hip-hop community shares some of the blame for its losing streak. He says those in the genre aren’t involved enough with The Recording Academy, its community and its events.

“We’re not active members of (The Recording Academy) and I promise to take a more active role in that,” said Questlove, who has won three Grammys. “I should definitely come and be more involved in that. It’s taxing time-wise, but you know, I can either sit and complain ... or do something about it.”

Jam says rap’s losses are also a reflection of the Grammy membership, which he said is “traditionally very heavy” with members of the country, jazz and classical music worlds.

“We’re a membership organization and the members vote. So, if the numbers of members who consider themselves of the hip-hop genre ... if those numbers are lower, then the results probably point to that fact,” Jam said.

But Stoute, who is the author of The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy, had harsh words for Jam. Stoute and Jam had a conversation after last year’s awards, and Stoute was upset that Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” wasn’t up for song of the year: At the Grammys, a track is not eligible for that award if it contains a sample or if it’s not an original piece of work; that disqualifies much of rap, which relies heavily on sampling (“Empire State of Mind” samples The Moments’ “Love on a Two-Way Street”).

Stoute said Jam should be helping hiphop, and blasted the renowned producer.

“What he’s doing is not right,” Stoute said of Jam. “And if he’s supposed to be the guy who understands urban music because of his famed career as a producer ... (and) if he’s not going to be sensitive to the creativity around hip-hop, I am sorry, we’re in trouble.”

Ringo 2012, Ringo Starr (Hip-O/Ume)

One look in the mirror was all it took for exBeatle Ringo Starr to find the best producer for his 17th solo record, Ringo 2012, Starr claims. Unfortunately, looks can be deceiving and Starr might have done better shopping around someone to make this release more interesting.

As it stands, Ringo 2012 is equal parts reflection and rehash. The subject matter, mostly composed by others, is mostly fond memories of days gone by for Starr, with a bit a make-love-not-war ethos sprinkled in for good measure.

When presented with Starr’s dry vocal approach, most tracks lack the required luster to make this album stand out.

Ringo 2012 is blues, rock and a touch of honkytonk. The melodies aren’t bad. They’re just too well-traveled. From the first track “Anthem” to the final salute in “Slow Down,” there’s not much here to show us that Starr has challenged himself

beyond a formulaic delivery. “Wings” is a nice song, but he’s already recorded it years ago on his sixth album.

There are some moments when the fit is fine, as on “Rock Island Line.” This bluesy standard made its way to Starr by way of Lead Belly and so-called skiffle bands in Liverpool, England, where Starr paid his early dues in the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group. The song gets a nice boost from blues guitar standout Kenny Wayne Shepard, who sizzles throughout.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: On “In Liverpool,” Starr gives us a glimpse of his life in the town of his youth, walking to the Iron Door club to play with Rory Storm.

You can feel his voice warm as he reminisces about his preBeatles days. Truth be told, there’s very little on this album to reference his breathless, chart-topping Fab Four time. Seems like Starr appreciates an earlier time in his career a little more, and it seems earnest here.

Pickler embraces traditional country on CD

Kellie Picker’s North Carolina accent and unfiltered rural perspective has made her a polarizing figure since she competed as a 2006 American Idol contestant, finishing sixth.

Some consider her big personality and hard-country style as charming; others see her as recalling an era left behind by modern-day Nashville.

Pickler deepens the line in the sand with the hardcore country of her third album, 100 Proof. One of six tunes the singer co-wrote, “Unlock That Honky Tonk,” rings the battle call; its plea to open a locked dancehall could be an allegory that country music shouldn’t forego the down-home sounds that gave the genre its identity. The quality of her

performances proves Pickler is right.

For 100 Proof, Pickler enlists co-producers Frank Liddell, who has worked with Miranda Lambert, and Luke Wooten, who has worked with Dierks Bentley. Both Lambert and Bentley are successful contemporary artists who embrace traditional country music. Indeed, Pickler incorporates Lambert’s take-no-prisoners attitude and Bentley’s rambunctious use of acoustic and electric instruments.

However, even those artists haven’t cut anything as drenched

in old-fashioned heartbreak as the ballad “Stop Cheatin’ On Me,” which would have fit country queens Connie Smith or Tammy Wynette, the latter of whom, fittingly, is the subject of one of Pickler’s new songs.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: Part of Pickler’s appeal comes from her hard-knock story: She was raised by grandparents after her mother abandoned her and her father was beset by alcoholism and prison terms. Two new songs, co-written by Pickler, are directed at each parent, with the acoustic ballad “The Letter (To Daddy)” touchingly celebrating her father’s return to sobriety and to firming up their relationship.

‘Man on a Ledge’ a not-so-thrilling thriller

The first laugh doesn’t give it all away.

Kyra Sedgwick, playing a New York TV reporter, shows up to cover the would-be suicide of the “Man on a Ledge.” She finishes her breathless report, and then, with more than a hint of Rita Moreno sneaking into her voice, the WASPy Sedgwick says, “Suzie Morales reporrrrrting.”

Well, snicker.

Then we see Genesis Rodriguez, who as Angie has shown up to pull off an elaborate jewelry-store burglary in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider togs — lots of skin and a push-up bra whose engineering only NASA could appreciate. Tee hee.

A guy’s standing on a ledge of the Roosevelt Hotel, threatening to jump, and the gum-snapping New Yorkers below yell “Just get ON with it.”

Man on a Ledge isn’t a caper comedy.

It’s a heist picture, a thriller, and a notthat-thrilling one at that. But the folks who made it have enough of a sense of humor to get how silly it is and run with that on occasion.

Sam Worthington (Avatar) has the title role, a guy who broke out of prison just days before, an ex-cop standing on that ledge, proclaiming his innocence and demanding that the most unstable, harddrinking negotiator on the NYPD (Elizabeth Banks) clock in to talk him down. In a few brisk early scenes, we see the prison break, meet the jumper’s brother (Jamie Bell) the brother’s girlfriend (Rodriguez), and the jumper’s former partner (Anthony Mackie). We realize, long before the cops, that this is no mere suicide. Nick Cassidy, standing on that ledge, is drawing attention and coordinating a heist as he does it.

MAN ON A LEDGE HH1/2 Worthington only rarely suggests the endrating: PG-13 for violence and brief of-his-tether mania that would be this strong language jumper’s disguise. He’s playing a guy who Running time: 1:40 isn’t that convincing as an actor.

Survivor films: Live or let die?

Plot of ‘The Grey’ too much like title

The Grey is an old-fashioned survival tale harboring pretensions that it is something more. Not a lot more — just a hint of the psycho-cerebral here, a smidgen of the primal and primitive there.

Liam Neeson stars in director Joe (Smoking Aces) Carnahan’s latest splash of testosterone, about a wintry plane crash in the Alaskan arctic in which the survivors are stalked by wolves. Their only protection is each other and the hunter (Neeson) whose job it was to understand wolves and shoot them when they got too close to oil workers.

The crash itself is scary, surreal and graphic, among the best ever filmed.

Those who walk away from it find themselves in a snowy hell.

Then we start to meet the sketched-in “types” that the script has packed onto that plane and the movie loses its lovely promise, if not its premise. There’s the sensitive guy with brains (Dallas Roberts), the dad missing his kid (Dermot Mulroney), the hothead Latino ex-con (Frank Grillo), the gentle man-mountain (Nonso Anozie) and a few others.

They’re in the middle of nowhere, with no real survival gear and no prayer

Neeson — as Ottway, the hunter who takes over this survivor “pack” — lays out the wolf problem: pack dynamics, territory, feeding range. The men, a rough crew of strangers, must scramble through whiteout conditions, keeping warm, keeping the wolves at bay, on a trek to safety.

The idea from this script by Carnahan and Ian Mackenzie Jeffers is that the humans revert to a sort of pack mentality, with Ottway as the alpha dog, challenged by others as the weak and the careless are picked off. The characters pick up random bits of back story and the film begs us to wonder about the woman we see in Ottway’s vivid, hallucinogenic flashbacks.

The spare use of music emphasizes the howling tundra winds, and the production design gets across the bleak, hostile terrain this mismatched crew must master. The dialogue is hard-bitten, but not particularly punchy or pithy. They have “dog” problems, right?

“I’m much more of a cat person, really.”

Death scenes are handled with a manly grace, with the fatalistic Ottway (Neeson is perfect for this) urging the dying to let it “slide over you.”

But The Grey sets up scenarios that it forgets about, such as how to battle a wolf pack — “We kill ‘em, one at a time.” And I couldn’t decide if they lost track of the wolves in the editing, or if Carnahan realized how Twilight-fake the beasts looked and limited their scenes in the final edit.

Digital scenery, digitally enhanced snowstorms? Good. Digital wolves or werewolves? Bad. Why in this post-Avatar pixelated era this should be a reality is anybody’s guess.

The makings of a solid adventure tale were here. But what came out in The Grey is entirely too much like the title — colorless, and grey, and a too digital for its own good.

Today, Liam Neeson will don a parka and head for Alaska in The Grey, an action-survival film about a group of oil-rig workers whose plane crashes in the icy wilderness. Sounds pretty chilly — especially when the wolves show up.

Whether audiences will embrace the film warmly remains a question.

The survival movie can be a tough sell: There’s something inherently compelling about man versus nature, but bad weather alone won’t hold anyone’s attention. Throw in a human villain, and the audience might start expecting an action flick; focus on the hero’s inner struggles, and the mood can get too intense. The Grey is expected to earn about $11 million over the weekend.

How have other survival movies tried to pull in audiences? Here’s a look at what worked and what didn’t: Swiss Family Robinson: Disney’s 1960 version of the 1812 novel about a family shipwrecked on a tropical island couldn’t have had a happier ending: They stay and establish a colony! Total gross: $427 million (adjusted for inflation).

Alive: Ethan Hawke starred in this 1993 dramatized story of the Uruguayan rugby team that survived a 1972 plane crash by resorting to cannibalism. Might have been too grim for mainstream viewers. It grossed about $36.7 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.

Open Water: Vacationing scuba divers come up for air and realize their boat has forgotten them. Sharks appear, but with a tiny budget of $500,000, the 2003 movie focuses mostly on bickering. Total gross: $30.6 million.

127 Hours: The true-life 2010 tale of hiker Aron Ralston (James Franco), who fell into a chasm and escaped by hacking off his right arm with a pocketknife, earned six Oscar nominations but only $18.3 million. Reports of viewers vomiting in theaters might not have helped.

Frozen: Three young skiers get stuck on a chairlift overnight. As if the oncoming blizzard weren’t bad enough, one has to pee. Total gross: $246,000. Bad news for The Grey — this 2010 movie also featured wolves.

Clooney shines in ‘The Descendants’

Alexander Payne makes movies about men on the brink — of a nervous breakdown, of personal or professional ruin and, ultimately, maybe even some hardearned peace. That was true of Matthew Broderick’s scheming teacher in Election, Jack Nicholson’s searching retiree in About Schmidt and Paul Giamatti’s sloppy oenophile in Sideways, and it’s certainly true of George Clooney in The Descendants.

As real-estate lawyer Matt King, he finds everything in his life is simultaneously in flux and on the verge of collapse. He isn’t just functioning one day at a time — he’s navigating the chaos one hour at a time.

This isn’t any easier, even though he lives in Hawaii, a place that’s supposed to be paradise.

Clooney being Clooney, though, he makes every stage of his character’s arc believable, from grief through anger and eventual acceptance, and he gives a performance that’s so understated as to appear effortless. Having long ago learned to jettison movie-star vanity to play varied, challenging parts ­— and having turned 50 this year — Clooney seems comfortable portraying regular guys with regular problems. What Matt must endure cumulatively is extraordinary, but elements of his journey surely will resonate with ordinary folks.

Matt’s wife, Elizabeth, is lying in a hospital bed in a coma following a boating accident. By all accounts, she’s been a bit of a wild child her whole life, but now there isn’t much hope that she’s going to make it.

Matt and the girls must make the rounds to friends and family to explain that there isn’t much time left for Elizabeth and to give them a chance to say their goodbyes. This process would seem wrenching enough, but Alexandra insists on making it even more difficult by bringing along her idiot boyfriend, Sid (Nick Krause), for moral support.

She then drops another bombshell on

her father: Elizabeth was having an affair at the time of her accident. Matt is understandably incensed by the discovery, but he’s also curious to find out who this guy is, and his bumbling attempts at casual stalking provide some much-needed comic relief.

As if all this weren’t enough to handle, Matt’s enormous family has put him in charge of deciding what to do with the 25,000 acres of pristine land on Kauai that they’ve inherited from their royal Hawaiian

ancestors.

A deadline is looming to choose whether to sell it to developers, and to whom, and for how much; this burden of privilege is what gives the film, based on the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings, its title.

Matt wades through all these troubles, and while everything would seem to be at stake at once, Payne’s pacing is often so languid that we don’t feel the sort of mounting tension that we should. Maybe it has something to do with the laid-back setting — although it is novel to see this beautiful place through the eyes of everyday residents, rather than tourists.

However, the story keeps you guessing as to where it will go, and it features some piercing moments of emotional truth. The casting of Matthew Lillard as the other man is an unexpected and inspired choice, and the inevitable confrontation with him takes some surprising turns; this also is true of the interactions with his wife, played by Judy Greer.

This is, of course, Clooney’s show ­— he’s in nearly every moment of the film, and he delivers a doozy of a moment-of-truth speech — but both young actresses who play his daughters hold their own beautifully with him.

LOS ANGELES — It’s a small, small world that’s depicted in several Oscar nominees for best foreign and best documentary films — and getting even smaller and more inter-connected.

The nominees in those two categories, from countries as disparate as Belgium and Iran, as well as Middle America, reflect what some say is an unusually international spirit to this year’s nominees in many categories.

“It’s sort of a more global feeling here,” said Wim Wenders, the

German director, L.A. habitue and nominee for his pioneering 3-D documentary Pina, about the late avant-garde choreographer Pina Bausch, speaking by phone from Berlin. “I think it’s a very positive sign for the Oscars to reach out and embrace other film cultures more.”

Possibly no movie embodies that development better than the foreign film contender A Separation, a drama in which marital strife and societal tensions engulf a Tehran couple. The movie, by writer-director Asghar Farhadi, also was nominated for original screenplay, a rare feat for a for-

eign-language film.

A Separation, which has already won a Golden Globe, is widely regarded as the favorite in a field that also includes Polish director Agnieszka Holland’s Holocaust drama In Darkness; Michael R. Roskam’s Bullhead, a revenge tale centered on Belgium’s bovine-hormone mafia; Joseph Cedar’s Footnote, from Israel, about father-and-son Talmudic scholars at a Jerusalem university; and Monsieur Lazhar, a Canadian film by Philippe Falardeau about an Algerian immigrant sent to replace an elementary school teacher who

committed suicide.

Michael Barker, co-president of Sony Pictures Classics, which is distributing A Separation, In Darkness and Footnote, said this year’s foreign film nominees mark a shift away from traditional European movie powerhouses such as France and Italy toward emerging global hot spots.

“There’s no question these are countries that are very much in the news and these are places where the filmmakers have a lot to say,” Barker said.

In addition to Pina, the documentary nominees are Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky’s

Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory, about the controversial murder conviction and later freeing of the socalled West Memphis 3; Hell and Back Again, by Danfung Dennis and Mike Lerner, about the lethal dangers that U.S. troops face in Afghanistan and upon returning home; If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front, about a transnational radical environmental group, by Marshall Curry and Sam Cullman; and Undefeated, an uplifting film about an under-resourced urban high school football team, by T.J. Martin, Daniel Lindsay and Richard Middlemas.

Common explains feud with Drake

PARK CITY, Utah — The Sundance Film Festival became the unlikely center of hip-hop’s latest feud when actor-turned-rapper Drake and rapper-turned-actor Common came to town.

Common was promoting his role in upcoming family drama LUV, while Drake was performing at one of the many late-night parties.

The two have traded insults recently via their raps, but Common said he didn’t want to say anything else about Drake not in rhyme form.

“I feel like I said everything I really needed to say on the record. I just looked at it as like ‘Hey, it’s just a hiphop battle,’” he explained in an interview this week.

Common had the most recent entry into the battle, by adding his verse to a Rick Ross song and naming Drake directly — a move that the Chicago native said he felt obligated to make.

“Ice Cube, when he was going at N.W.A., once he left N.W.A., you knew who it was. Jay-Z and Nas — Jay-Z said, ‘Smarten up, Nas.’ And you just knew. Cats would say names,” he continued.

“So that’s just the way that I feel like you’ve got to do it. I don’t want to like leave anything —I don’t want anybody else to think I’m talking about them. I want you to know, ‘Hey this is who I’m talking to.’”

Common, known more lately for his acting than his rapping, started the battle with a song called “Sweet” on his new album, The Dreamer/The Believer.

“He (Drake) felt offended by it. And the song is really discussing how hiphop has a softer side,” said Common.

“And I made it clear that I’m not talking about anyone specifically. I was talking about, ‘Hey, you know hip-hop is starting to become more just saturated with softer songs,’” he said. “And I don’t see anything the matter actually with the love songs. I do love songs. So I don’t see anything the matter with it, but when the music becomes saturated with it, I mean, I speak up. I love hip-hop music.”

It takes a lot of work to be this silly CAST to perform ‘The Nerd’, opening Thursday, Feb. 2

A

ny comedy that the director describes as having a “cottage cheese moment” is sure to be funny, but add to that

“It’s just a silly, farcical comedy that everyone can enjoy,” says CAST director Kim Dobbs. “This is the kind of show that audiences love and the actors have to really work at.”

The Nerd tells the story of aspiring young architect in Terre Haute, Ind., named Willum Cubert who often tells his friends about a fellow ex-soldier Rick Steadman, who saved his life after Cubert was seriously wounded in Vietnam.

Though having never met Steadman, Cubert has written him to say that, as long as he lives, “You will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you.”

Cubert is thrilled when Steadman shows up unexpectedly at his

apartment on the night of his 34th birthday party. But that excitement quickly disappears when it becomes painfully clear that Steadman is a hopeless nerd. And the longer Steadman sticks around, the more trouble he causes, until the normally reserved Cubert starts contemplating violence.

“He’s just a bit odd,” explains Glenn Davenport, who plays Steadman in the CAST production. “He’s not so good with people and that causes a lot of problems. But the great thing about my character is that I get to have all the fun since he is such a total goofball.”

stories of mutant pigs and a main character routinely described as a “bumbling oaf” and audiences are apt to be rolling in the aisles. Such are the modest expectations of The Nerd, CAST’s latest production, opening at 8 p.m. Feb. 2.

Because The Nerd is such a physical comedy, the seven actors can’t pull any punches. It’s full throttle all the way — even in rehearsals, Dobbs says.

“It’s choreography,” she says. “It takes a lot of rehearsal, a lot of stumbling through it and running through it until it becomes so ingrained that it’s like second nature.”

And that’s what makes this production so good, Dobbs says.

“It takes a lot of work to be silly properly,” she says. “All of these actors have to be willing to openly and completely make fools of themselves.

They’ve got to dive in all the way.”

And there-

in lies the challenge, Davenport says. After so much repetition during rehearsals, all the actors are dying to see and hear the reaction from an audience.

“It’s always more difficult to rehearse than it is to perform in this kind of comedy because you don’t have that laughter to guide you,” he says. “And we’ve done it all so many times that it’s almost stopped being funny to us, but the audience is going to love it.”

And audiences that come to see The Nerd will undoubtedly get their money’s worth, Davenport says.

“Don’t come expecting to be deeply moved,” he says.

“But do expect to have a great time enjoying the lighter side of theater.”

Ice is back with a brand new invention

MIAMI — An unlikely home improvement show hosted by 1990s rapper Vanilla Ice is set to premiere its second season with the remodeling of another South Florida home.

During the 13-episode run of The Vanilla Ice Project on the DIY Network, the artist — whose real name is Rob Van Winkle — and his crew will take a dilapidated Palm Beach County mansion along the Intercostal Waterway and bring it into the 21st century with technology that isn’t on the market yet.

Van Winkle’s passion for real estate and renovation took hold in the early 1990s, after his hit “Ice Ice Baby” made him an international star with millions in the bank. He first bought a home on Miami Beach’s exclusive Star Island. He later bought homes in the Laurel Canyon area of Los Angeles, New York’s Greenwich Village and Snowbird, Utah, a skiing and snowboarding destination.

“I went on tour for three years and never saw any of those houses,” Van Winkle said.

Fearing they may have been a waste of money, he decided to sell them — and a new career was born.

“I literally made millions of dollars on them,” Van Winkle said. “I was like, you gotta be kidding me. It can’t be that easy.

Let’s go buy some more.”

After Van Winkle’s early 1990s stardom faded, he became more heavily involved in real estate.

While he acknowledges that the housing market is different than it was 15 years ago, Van Winkle said he’s been able to make money over the years by educating himself, studying markets and taking advantage of short sales and foreclosures. The longtime Miami resident estimates that he’s bought and sold more than a hundred homes, mainly in Florida.

Matt Levine, with Departure Films, said he had done a special on Vanilla Ice for the Biography Channel several years ago. So when the production company was looking to duplicate the success of Flip This House, a hit on the A&E Network, Levine said he remembered Van Winkle talking about his real estate experience. When Levine called, he learned that Van Winkle was in the process of buying a large, completely gutted foreclosure in Palm Beach.

“I flew down with a camera, and we shot a little demo of him (Van Winkle) showing off the place and talking about his experience in real estate and what he wanted to do with this house,” Levine said. “It was really very impressive, and it became this little teaser reel. And DIY was immediately interested in it.”

That house became the project for the first season, which aired in the fall 2010. The show became an instant hit for the DIY Network, and the home sold a short time later.

Levine acknowledged that the oddness of the show’s premise — Vanilla Ice doing home improvement — was probably the original draw for most viewers. They kept watching because of Van Winkle’s charisma and expertise, Levine said.

“It was unexpected, his likeability and how much he knew,” Levine said. “Once it became clear that he really knew his stuff, people started to look at him in a different way. Instead of seeing him as a one-hit wonder or a blast from the past, people started to appreciate him much more than they expected.”

Although Van Winkle has been rebuilding his celebrity over the past decade with appearances on reality shows

like The Surreal Life, Van Winkle and Levine are both quick to point out that The Vanilla Ice Project isn’t really a reality show.

“The Surreal Life is reality TV: no plot, not informative, not anything, just a bunch of celebrities running around, seeing how crazy they can get.”

Levine describes The Vanilla Ice Project as more of a home renovation show, where the expert just happens to be Vanilla Ice. “We’re not manipulating the story line or coming up with ideas,” Levine said. “We’re crafting episodes so it’s coherent.

Beyond that, it’s his deal.”

Both houses featured on the show were purchased by Van Winkle.

“This is all my own money,” Van Winkle said. “It’s basically just them following me around, doing what I do.”

Van Winkle acknowledges that having the film crew around has given him a chance to boost the scale of his renovations. In the past, the work he did to homes was generally limited to painting, minor repairs and landscaping.

“Since the cameras are on it, these are the best houses I’ve done,” Van Winkle said.

The new season promises to be even bigger and better than the first.

“I’m showcasing a lot of modern, state-of-the-art home features that you can’t even get until 2013,” Van Winkle said.

Following the renovation, the mansion will have a helicopter pad, a pneumatic elevator, electronically controlled beds and a 3-D movie theater. They’re also tearing out an old swimming pool and replacing it with a lazy river and Tiki hut. The home will be wired so that everything from the televisions to the thermostat to the curtains can be controlled with a smartphone from any-

Most viewers might not have the inclination — or the money — to turn their home into a high-tech, rock-star pad, but that doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy the show or learn from it.

“You don’t have to put in the elevator; you don’t have to put in the lazy river or the huge 3-D cin-

ema,” Van Winkle said. “But you might like the flooring we used in the garage. It’s just snap-in tiles.

It’s really simple. You can order them anywhere and make your garage a really cool man cave.

There are a lot of cool little things that you’re going to be inspired by and have ideas to do to your own home.”
