A Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervision and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continuing collection efforts. The following bankruptcies declared by Calhoun County residents were recorded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Alabama last week:

Ragland woman killed in highway accident From staff reports A 20-year-old Ragland woman was found dead Sunday following a motor vehicle accident in Calhoun County. Authorities say the body of Magen Elaine Hughes was discovered in a vehicle off to the side of the roadway at 5110 Alabama 77 late Sunday afternoon. The latemodel Mustang she was driving had run off the road and struck a tree.
The coroner’s office was called and Hughes was pronounced dead at 5:25 p.m. Calhoun County Deputy Coroner Shane Adrian said the cause of death was blunt force trauma and estimated that the accident had occurred much earlier in the day, sometime between midnight and 3 a.m. Adrian said the highway at the accident scene was not curved or on a hill. He said the victim’s vehicle came to rest about 50 feet
off the road in a location that would not have been obvious to passing motorists as an accident scene. “It was right there with several wrecked vehicles, like a junkyard type thing,” he said. A trucker called the authorities because, Adrian said, he noticed that the Mustang’s airbag had deployed. The Alabama State Troopers office is investigating the accident.

Report: Syria arms imports surge thanks to Russia Associated Press STOCKHOLM — Syria imported nearly six times more weapons in 2007-2011 than in the previous five-year period, with Russia accounting for 72 percent of the arms supplies to President Bashar Assad’s regime, an international research institute said today. The report on global arms transfers by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute highlighted how Moscow continues to provide Syria with weapons even as the U.S., the European Union
and others impose arms embargoes due to the regime’s violent crackdown on protesters. It did not specify the volume of weapons exports after the start of the uprising in 2011. Major Russian arms deliveries to Syria in 2007-2011 included air defense systems and anti-ship missiles, which have no direct use in the current unrest in the Arab state. But they have upgraded the regime’s capability to defend against outside intervention, SIPRI researcher Pieter Wezeman said.
