Dr. Rodney Snead examines a patient’s chart on the computer at C.A.R.E.S.

Best Emergency Family Care | C.A.R.E.S. The reason for Cheaha Area Regional Emergency Specialists’ success is in its name. Generally referred to as just C.A.R.E.S., the staff at the facility do just what its name implies. The staff cares about what they are doing and how they treat their patients. “It’s a friendly atmosphere, a culture of the staff here that works together and cooperates to take care of patients,” said Dr. Rodney Snead, co-owner of C.A.R.E.S. It’s little wonder then that C.A.R.E.S. won the Reader’s Choice for best emergency care facility. “We’re trying to be sensitive to the patients’ needs, and the staff is able to get together to help maintain quality patient care,” Snead said. C.A.R.E.S. first opened its doors in 2002 in Anniston and then opened a second location in 2008 at the Oxford Exchange. Both facilities have different operating hours to better meet the needs of patients, Snead said. The Anniston location opens earlier

in the day, while the Oxford office closes later in the day. “One office closes later so we have the ability for patients to be covered by more extended hours,” Snead said. “We share the same electronic records between offices, so it’s easy for patients to switch between them.” When patients do arrive at one of the two facilities, they find that the services available to them are vast. C.A.R.E.S. offers immediate family care and occupational medicine and urgent care. Also, C.A.R.E.S. provides other in-house services that make it a convenient, one-stop shop for patients, Snead said. “We have fairly extensive labs and do X-rays, pulmonary function testing and EKGs, so you don’t have to go somewhere else for a lab and then get called back for consultation,” Snead said. “It’s all here in-house.” — Patrick McCreless FiNALISTS | 2. NHC Place cares deeply about its residents and provides a broad range of care, giving residents choices that can improve their lives. That’s why administrator Dana Hanshaw thinks NHC Place won the Reader’s Choice Best Assisted Living award this year. “We offer the only continuum of care in the community,” Hanshaw said, providing varying levels of care that cater to each resident’s needs. From weekly housekeeping and transportation to appointments to a completely catered apartment with frequent assistance with daily living activities, the facility offers the care residents need when they need it. For those in need of long-term care or rehabilitation, the facility, opened in 1996, can refer residents to NHC Health Care in Anniston. “It’s a very good partnership in the community. It lets folks know that you have the full continuum of your lifespan if you need

those services,” she said. “I think that’s what makes us a little different and sets us apart.” Around 65 employees help care for residents in the facility’s 65 apartments. With five floor plans, each apartment offers something different to meet the needs of residents, from studios to one- and two-bedroom apartments that provide the room needed for married couples and siblings. Each room is built to adapt to seniors’ needs, so there’s no need to move a resident from the room they’ve grown accustomed to if there is progression in their health. Hanshaw described NHC Place as caring and clean, and a place where everyone who works there focuses on the needs of residents. “And we’re very focused on customer service,” Hanshaw said. “Our philosophy is ‘customer service.’” — Eddie Burkhalter FINALISTS | 2. Ginger Bunn stacks clean sheets on a shelf as she prepares a room for the day at Body Kneads in Jacksonville.

BEST Massage Therapist | Ginger Bunn, Body Kneads, Jacksonville The trickle of a fountain, dimmed lights and escape from the outside bustle offer a calming atmosphere when customers walk in the front door of Body Kneads. After opening in 2005, the therapeutic massage and wellness business offers colon hydrotherapy, infrared sauna, yoga classes, therapeutic massage and herbal body wraps. Owner Ginger Bunn said Body Kneads is different because of her level of care for clients. Bunn said her past experience with massage therapy brought her to do what she does. In 1995, Bunn was completely paralyzed from a car accident. She regained feeling in her left side after a few weeks of physical and massage therapy, and feeling in her right side came back within a few months. “A massage therapist and physical therapist inspired me to keep the ambition to keep going,” Bunn said.

DOG DISH

According to Bunn, massage therapy can help health-related problems ranging from stress, preparing for pregnancy and lowering high blood pressure. She said one client stands out in her memory. “I had one person who had gone through chemotherapy for cancer and lost feeling from the knees down,” Bunn said. “After two months, she regained feeling, and after four months, she was able to wear open-back sandals for the first time in 10 years because she could not feel them on her feet before.” She said she completely believes in what she does for a living. “I enjoy being able to make a difference,” Bunn said. — Leah Cayson Finalists | 2. Her personal heritage, she said, has strongly influenced her work. “It’s always there. It’s in everything I do,” Crow said. Her paintings often feature images of leafless trees, angelic forms, clouds and lightning strikes against a swirling background of vivid hues. “When I start painting I don’t have anything in mind,” Crow said. “It’s more about feeling than what you see.” Crow said the meaning of her work is personal in nature. “It may not make sense to other people, but it makes sense to me,” Crow said. Crow is primarily self-taught though she did take some art courses at Gadsden State Community College. Though her own formal training is limited, she now gives art classes to children and adults at her Piedmont studio. — Laura Gaddy FINALISTS | 2. Larry Martin | 3. Joseph Giri

When Rain Crow learned Anniston Star readers selected her as the top artist in Calhoun County she said it was “wonderful.” The Piedmont resident has thought of herself as an artist for as long as she can remember and said that it’s nice to be acknowledged for her work. She paints whimsical works that incorporate spiritual images with natural elements, a distinct style that she says pays homage to her cultural and biological ties to the Cherokee Nation. “Most of my artwork is spiritual, even though it’s abstract,” Crow said. Crow said her work has been shared in small galleries in the Southeast and at cultural art shows. Today it can be spotted at her Piedmont-based gallery, Rain Crow Art Gallery and Studio 23. She said she spent some of her formative years growing up on in Cherokee North Carolina, living with other Native Americans.

Anniston Museum’s ‘Environments of Africa’ exhibit is a visitor favorite.

BEST local attraction | Anniston Museum of Natural History At the Anniston Museum of Natural History, visitors can explore the sandy beaches of the Alabama Gulf, meet the ferocious animal inhabitants of the African savannah and travel 2,300 years back in time to Ptolemaic Egypt, all without leaving the Model City. Anniston boasts one of the best museums in the state. Each year, the Anniston Museum of Natural History welcomes visitors from around the globe. Margie Conner, the museum’s marketing manager, said no one leaves disappointed. “Our museum is really an excellent museum for any place. We have people that come from all over … They’re always, always impressed,” she said, adding she has spoken with visitors from large cities like New York and Chicago who are surprised to find a highcaliber museum in what they consider a small town. Every year, 50,000 to 60,000 visitors wander through the museum’s eight exhibit halls. Conner said that for most people, the list of favorite exhibits comes down to Dynamic Earth, which features towering dinosaurs; Ancient Egypt, the home of two mummies; and Environments of Africa. Conner credits the African exhibit’s popularity to

Disney’s “The Lion King.” “Kids walk around and say, ‘Look, there’s Pumba!’” she explained. But Simba and Timone aren’t the only reason for kids to stop by the museum. This summer, the museum hosted a sold-out Kid’s Night at the Museum in June, and will have another July 18. These special events will feature flashlight tours of the exhibits, time with live animals and a backstage look at the museum. This year, kids will even get to build their own firefly. Conner said the kids’ nights have been so popular, the museum has decided to hold its first-ever family night this August so that parents can get in on the fun. “It’s a really different way to see the collections,” she said. Through the end of the summer, the museum is also offering a two-for-one admission coupon to say thanks to the community. “We’re so thankful,” Conner said. “We just think the world of all of our visitors and guests.” — Sara Milledge FINALISTS | 2. Even with a congregation numbering more than 3,800 people, Dr. Rick Reaves finds a way to connect with the members of Hill Crest Baptist Church. Although he earned his doctorate in pastoral ministry from the Southern Baptist School of Bible Studies, he’s known around Hill Crest simply as Brother Rick. Every Sunday morning at 10 and Wednesday night at 6:30 he leads the church’s congregation in worship. “My part is to love the people and lead the people in trusting the Lord with their lives,” he explained. “I respond to the needs of the people upon their request … I make myself as available as possible to them.” He also credits his success to “a good, hard-working staff.” “The people know they can go to them,” Reaves said.

Reaves has been the senior pastor at Hill Crest for 21 years, but his relationship with the church began 15 years earlier. He was first hired in 1977 to serve as the church’s youth minister. Ten years later, he began work as the church’s associate pastor. “Every position has been fun,” he said, grinning. After three and a half decades of ministry at Hill Crest, Reaves knows the church and its members well. It isn’t difficult for him to identify his favorite part of being the church’s pastor. “The people, they’re just good,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed them, and they’ve been good to me and my family.” — Sara Milledge

BEST Tattoo shop | Tat2Tyme, Anniston If you feel like it’s time for a tattoo, our Reader’s Choice for the best ink in town is Tat2Tyme in Anniston. Owner Chris Marler says other parlors he’s worked for in the past have been featured in The Star, but this is the first time his own business has. “I’m very excited,” he said. Tat2Tyme’s location in the Lenlock Shopping Center on McClellan Boulevard may be a little difficult to spot from the outside since the sign is down, but on the inside you’ll find people with all colors tattooing each other and drawing designs in magic marker. “It used to be Mallory Dry Cleaners,” Marler said of the parlor’s new location. “When we first got here it was disgusting. We had to tear everything out and

rebuild.” Now, you’d be hard-pressed to think it had ever been anything but an ink palace. Walls of maroon and blue set the mood in the dimly lighted lobby, while posters and handmade drawings of Marilyn Monroe and different-sized mirrors finish its design. “I don’t know,” Marler said when asked what makes Tat2Tyme different from other tattoo parlors. After a minute, he said they don’t do any “flash work” — all their work is custom. “I just love what I do,” he said. — Madasyn Czebiniak FINALISTS | 2. Riverside Tattoo, Oxford | 3. Moore Printing co-owner Danny Shears said winning The Anniston Star’s Reader’s Choice Award for best commercial printer three years in a row is a humbling experience and an honor. “That’s a true testament to treating the customer the way we would want to be treated,” Shears said. Moore Printing offers practically every product that involves ink on paper, Shears said. They do brochures, posters, invitations, business cards, triplicate forms and business letterheads. Shears and his business partner Steve Taylor bought Moore Printing in 2001. They kept the name because it had been a wellknown printer since 1979, Shears said. Both the owners knew practically nothing about the industry when they purchased the shop. “I knew how to put toner in a copier and that was about it,” Shears said.

Several of the employees stayed on and showed Shears and Taylor how to operate the printing presses, binding machines and laminators. After that, Taylor said he and Shears tried to focus on basic business practices like customer service. “We’re pretty much simplistic here, and we try to please the customer in every way we know how,” Taylor said. Both owners still deliver the supplies to their customers, and Shears said the staff tries to be as flexible as possible to work with their clients’ deadlines. Shears admitted a big part of Moore Printing’s success is due to its five workers. “The community has been really good to us, but I would say the key to any good business is good employees,” he said. — Daniel Gaddy FINALISTS | 2. BEST convenience store Mapco, Golden Springs

Trent Penny/The Anniston Star

Barry O’Dell, second from left, manager of the Mapco in Golden Springs, works the register and attends to customers.

When you walk into the Mapco in Golden Springs, be prepared to be greeted with a smile and a cheery “Hello!” “It’s kind of like a family,” said General Manager Barry O’Dell, who has worked at the store since its opening in October 2007. “We know customers’ names and ask about people. We have a small-town feel.” That kindness and familiarity is what keeps the customers coming back, O’Dell said, and why the store has won the Reader’s Choice Best Convenience Store for three years in a row. Along with the normal features of most convenience stores — gas, cold drinks, snacks — the Golden Springs Mapco also features Anniston’s only Quizno’s location and the “best, freshest coffee in town,” O’Dell said. “They have the best custom-

er service,” one customer said as she got ready to check out. “I voted for them.” The store may attract even more loyal customers with Mapco’s new rewards card, which offers 3 cents off per gallon, plus points that can be redeemed in-store for free snacks and drinks. The store and gas pumps are open 24 hours, and Quizno’s is open from 5 a.m. until 9 p.m. But no matter the hour, the customer can always be comfortable and happy. “That’s our goal, to make it feel like it’s their store,” O’Dell said. “That’s why they keep coming back and we appreciate that.” — Deirdre Long FINALISTS | 2. Claire Caballero often travels across the state to shoot weddings.

BEST photo studio | Claire Caballero Photography, Anniston Claire Caballero was clearly humbled upon learning her business was chosen by readers as one of this year’s Reader’s Choice award winners. Claire Caballero Photography was one of the three top finishers in last year’s contest, but this year readers voted her as winner of the Reader’s Choice Photo Studio. “There are so many photographers around here that I admire, that I look up to,” Caballero said. “I feel so honored.” She began her business about 11 years ago, having majored in art with a concentration in photography at Jacksonville State University. Her work shows her dedication to the craft, with artful images of happy brides and grooms on their most special day, and families captured together in candid moments. “I try very hard to give my clients a great product, and I’m very passionate about it,” Caballero said. “I just work very hard to make each image perfect.” Caballero focuses largely on wedding photography, but she is also available for

family and children photo shoots. She only shoots in natural light and on location, saying she grew out of using backdrops many years ago and prefers the stylistic look of more candid, natural photographs. She often travels across Alabama to shoot weddings and spends time each summer working in Gulf Shores. “I don’t know that I’m the best out there,” Caballero said of her win. “I just think that I love it. It’s my passion and I work really hard at it.” To her, what makes a good photograph is one that shows the person’s emotion, the happiness of the moment, in a way that comes naturally. “Moments you can’t pose,” Caballero said, are the photographs she loves best. That’s what she works so hard to capture with her lens. — Eddie Burkhalter FINALISTS | 2. Jerrod Brown Studios, Homewood | 3. Rissie B’s Photography, Oxford

Janet Tyson Prosser hosts wine tastings at Tyson Fine Wines and Things.

BEST WINE/LIQUOR STORE | Tyson Fine Wines and Things, Anniston On a recent Thursday evening, Janet Tyson Prosser looked around her shop and picked out eight new faces among those having casual conversations or perusing her selection of wines and gifts at the wine tasting held weekly at Tyson Fine Wines & Things. Prosser hopped from group to group, suggesting wines or stopping to chat with familiar customers, fostering an environment in which even new customers seem like old friends. “You get hugs when you come in,” said Robyn Talley, an Eastaboga resident who often stops by the shop on the way home from work in Anniston. Prosser said her weekly wine tastings help set her shop apart from other stores in the area, bringing in new customers and providing a relaxing after-work stop for people on their way home or out to dinner. That’s how Talley first found herself in the shop two years ago, and she said she comes back partly because it has the best selection she’s seen in the area.

The family shop has been around since 1947, when Prosser’s father opened a shop to sell glass. The business has morphed and changed locations over the years and now includes gifts such as candles and jams, a custom framing shop, and more than 600 types of wine. Prosser said she tries to make it as easy as possible for customers to find what they’re looking for. By asking the right questions she can help undecided customers narrow their choices. Thanks to her husband’s enthusiasm for inventory, wines are easy to find, shelved by type and in price order, with an entire rack devoted to the store’s top sellers. Mostly, Prosser has tried to make her shop a sanctuary for customers. “Some place,” she said, “where we can be fun, let our hair down, be ourselves, have a drink, show them some good wine to take home and remember the day.” — Paige Rentz FINALISTS | 2. Old-fashioned sour cream, cinnamon sugar, caramel iced with peanuts and, of course, the classic original glazed make for a mouth-watering lineup behind the glass at LaMar’s Donuts in Oxford. After 11 years in business, owner Nancy Roberts knows what her customers like. “We do have a lot of regulars, locally and people traveling from Birmingham, Atlanta and Huntsville,” she said, adding the original glazed donut tops the list of customer favorites. “It still ranks supreme. The chocolate iced would rank right behind it.” Roberts told the story of one customer who worked his way down the line of donuts one flavor at a time. His verdict? Nothing beats the original. Besides donuts, LaMar’s offers pecan and cinnamon rolls, gourmet coffee and espresso drinks and even smoothies. The donut flavors vary by season, and LaMar’s features at least one different flavor each day. Roberts said her favorite LaMar’s treat is the cinnamon pecan roll, at least for now. “It’s just about perfection,” she said.

With the doors open every morning by 5:15 a.m., Roberts said the made-from-scratch gourmet donuts are prepared beginning around midnight. “It’s just like that old commercial said,” she explained, “‘Gotta get up and make the donuts.’” By closing time, the sweet treats left over are put to good use. “At the end of the day, if we have anything left over, and we don’t always, we donate it to a nonprofit charity,” Roberts said. “We like to see our product go to people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to enjoy it.” Roberts credits her staff for the shop’s success. She says she has the best donut crew anywhere. She’s also thankful to the community for its support of LaMar’s for over a decade. “We’re so grateful to our customers,” she said. “Without them, we wouldn’t have a business.” — Sara Milledge

BEST overall restaurant | Peerless Saloon and Grille, Anniston If you ask Kristi Farmer, the owner of the Peerless Saloon and Grille, what she did when she first bought the place, she’ll tell you she knocked a hole in the wall. Before, Farmer said, it was just the saloon. Now it’s a saloon and grille with old brick walls and a small-town vibe, a treasure of Anniston that she refers to as, “our Cheers.” Not to mention it’s also the winner of the best overall restaurant for Reader’s Choice. Customers like Kandi Street don’t find that hard to believe. Street’s usually at the Peerless on Friday nights. And even Tuesdays during lunch. “I come here all the time,” she said. “I love the local atmosphere.” Peerless head chef Michelle Smith said she enjoys working at the grille because it’s unique and she isn’t required to stick to the same menu all the time. “If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing,

you’re not going to put a lot of care into it. I like coming up with things that aren’t necessarily on the menu, but we have ingredients for. I think it’s fun when the customers do it, too,” she said. Street said the Peerless has a certain charm that sets it apart from other restaurants. Having grown up in Atlanta, she said she enjoys bringing friends from out of town to the Peerless so they can see what it’s like to hang out in a place that supports the local community. “It’s different from the chain restaurants,” Street said. Farmer said she owes the success of her restaurant to the recipes her grandmother left her, like her recipe for the fried green tomatoes in her fried green tomato shrimp stacker, and to chef Smith. “We work off each other,” Farmer said. — Madasyn Czebiniak FINALISTS | 2. BEST BANK | NobleBank & Trust, multiple locations

Stephen Gross/The Anniston Star

Officers from NobleBank’s multiple locations gather for a meeting in Anniston.

One of the first things customers hear on walking into NobleBank & Trust is their names. It’s a rule at the Anniston-based banking company that customers be greeted by name by an employee within three steps or three seconds, according to Anthony Humphries, the president and chief executive. It’s that kind of attention to detail in customer service that led voters in the Reader’s Choice survey to pick NobleBank as best bank, Humphries suspects. “We get a lot of feedback from customers that they are treated warmly, that they are welcome,” Humphries said. NobleBank’s primary business is commercial banking, according to Humphries, though 3,500 of its 5,000 deposit accounts are consumer accounts. The company was founded in 2005, and now has 41 employees working in four locations: the main office on Quintard Avenue in Anniston, on U.S. 78 East in Oxford near the hotel district, off U.S. 431 in Alexandria, and on Main Street in downtown Piedmont.

The bank would like to grow its consumer lending business, Humphries said, though he acknowledges that it’s “tough for us to crack that market.” Demand over the next few years from customers who have put off buying new cars since the 2008 economic downturn may provide the best chance to make loans to new customers, he said. Among the other signs NobleBank takes customer service seriously: New employees receive a copy of Ken Blanchard’s “The Simple Truths of Service,” a book inspired by the story of a grocery bagger who slips encouraging notes into his customers’ parcels. Also, bank staffers phone customers each year on their birthdays. “It blows their minds that somebody would actually take the time to call them on their birthday,” Humphries said. — Ben Cunningham FINALISTS | 2. Greg Bodie said he was surprised to hear Tidal Wave was Calhoun County residents’ favorite spot to get their cars clean. That’s mostly because Tidal Wave has actually been Mister Hotshine for the last nine months. “We got bought out in October of last year,” said Bodie, the manager of the Oxford car wash which was voted as Readers Choice Best Car Wash for 2013 — albeit under a different name. It hasn’t exactly been a secret that the car wash got new owners last year. Bodie said for starters, the new owners — Mister Car Wash, one of the largest chain car wash businesses in the country — put a completely new and upgraded state-ofthe-art washing system right after they took over. Bodie said the car wash at Mister Hotshine is the most advanced in all of

Calhoun County. But the clientele still is pretty much the same, he said. Just as the employees and management are largely holdovers from Tidal Wave. And just because a bigger owner has taken over the place, it doesn’t mean the county’s favorite car wash stop lost its Southern charm, Bodie said. That’s probably the biggest reason folks don’t seem to have taken too much notice of the name change and new equipment. “Customer service hasn’t gone anywhere,” Bodie said. “We’re still top notch. Time in, and time out, our customer get the best service.” — Brian Anderson FINALISTS | 2. Anniston Super Wash, Anniston | 3. Xtreme Auto Spa, Anniston
