New Ashville coach hopes to end playoff drought By GARY HANNER St. Clair Times associate editor
For the third year in a row, the Ashville Bulldogs have a new head coach. Steve Martin is the new “Top Dawg” in Ashville. Last year, he was an assistant coach at Ashville, and it was his first year in the high school ranks. It has been a while since the Bulldogs have advanced to the state playoffs (2005), and Martin is hoping to end that drought. Martin played high school football at Locust Fork and college football at Alabama and Samford. Martin stayed in the college ranks for 25 years, being the strength and conditioning coach at various universities. He was a graduate assistant at Alabama in 1988-89; the same thing at Auburn in 1990-91 under Pat Dye; and at Texas Christian University in 1992. He became the strength
and conditioning coach at TCU under Pat Sullivan in 1993. In 1997, Martin came back to Alabama as strength coach. He spent the last few years at the college level at UAB. Martin said the guys have worked hard all summer.

When asked what he would like to accomplish his first year, Martin said he did not want to give out a number of wins. “I don’t plan on losing any of the games we play in,” he said.

“But if I sit here and tell you I hope we win seven games, that means I plan on losing three, and I don’t plan on that. What I want to do is eliminate mistakes, be simple, and do everything right every time. I want to eliminate turnovers and play hard. If we do those things, we will win a lot.” Ashville is in Class 3A, Region 5 along with Piedmont, Saks, Susan Moore, Glencoe, Weaver, White Plains and Cleveland. Martin said Piedmont is the class of the region, and Saks is going to be good this year as well. Ashville lost 11 seniors last year. The one player that
has been on everyone’s radar the past few years is senior E.J. Moss. After playing quarterback the past few years, Moss has been moved to tight end. He will also see time at tailback and fullback. On defense, Moss is playing middle linebacker and some defensive end. Stepping in at quarterback is sophomore Judd Mundy. Behind him is D.J. Cook. Martin said some younger guys are also coming along at quarterback, like freshman Hunter Huckbay. “We would like to groom him some before he goes in here,” Martin said. Ashville has four starters returning on offense and five starters returning on defense.
Martin said the keys to success will be playing hard and avoiding injuries. “We don’t have great numbers,” Martin said. “We have to continue to know what to do all the time. We have to eliminate mistakes and hold on to the football. We have to also play field position.” Martin said his goal is just like every other coach – win every game. “We will just see how the season unfolds,” he said. Martin’s coaching staff includes Anthony Rice, Heath Lauderdale, Logan Cornutt, Matt Brown, Rodney Wise and Danny Wise. Ashville opens the season Friday at home against the Springville Tigers.

Under Coach Keith Etheredge, the Leeds Green Wave football team won state titles in 2008 and 2010. When 2012 rolled around, there were high hopes of Leeds winning yet another Class 3A state title. The Green Wave finished 11-2 last year, advancing to the third round of the state playoffs where they lost to Fayette County 24-14. “It’s always disappointing when you don’t make it to the state championship game,” Etheredge said. “We had some injuries to some key players throughout the season that hurt us down the stretch. We did have some young players who stepped in and played well though, which I think will only help us this year.” Etheredge has been the coach at Leeds since 2006, and has an incredible overall record of 78-18. In playoff games, Etheredge is 21-5. Key senior players from last year’s squad who

at strong safety and weak safety last year. They are both real good leaders on defense.” Brown also mentioned returning starters free safety Rodrellas Garner and corner Taderious Campbell as key guys on defense. Other players mentioned on defense included Brett Staggs, Trey Kinney, Justin Thompson, Sammy Wright and Queneris Pollard. There are a few players who, according to Brown, have to play on both sides of the football. Brown said keys to having a successful season hinge on the fact that the players have learned this offensive system headed into the third year. “We as coaches have seen the improvements they have made since the spring and summer,” Brown said. “Offensively, we feel real good, especially if the offensive line comes through early and plays to a high level. We feel real good about our offense, whereas there are some question marks concerning our defense. We have a lot of new people

If the third time is the charm, look for a superb season from the Moody Blue Devils in 2013. This is the third year for head coach Jay Brown. The first two years saw Brown lead the Blue Devils to a record of 7-13. He was 1-9 his first year and improved to 6-4 last year. Moody fans are hoping the success and improvement carries over into this season. Brown has 15 seniors returning for the 2013 season. “This is a good class of guys,” Brown said. “Pretty much every one of them has played since they were freshmen. Many of them started last year, and several are three-year starters.” Key players returning this year include senior quarterback Michael Barron, a four-year starter. Brown believes Walker is the team to beat in the region, simply because they won the region last year. “I think Walker is a real tough team,” Brown said. “Athletically, you have Center Point, Mortimer Jordan and Pinson Valley who have outstanding players. Dampeer seeks playoff run in first season as head coach at PCHS By LAVONTE YOUNG St. Clair Times
Brooks Dampeer has high expectations for his first season at the helm of the Pell City Panthers football team. Last season, the Panthers went 7-5 and earned a trip to the second round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Class 6A playoffs. It marked the first time the Panthers made the postseason since 2007. Dampeer said their main goal this season is to make back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time in six seasons. “We are shooting to get into the playoffs,” Dampeer said. “We want to get in the playoffs and that is step one. You have to get in the playoffs before anything else matters. We want to get into the playoffs and we want to dominate each opponent each Friday night.” The Panthers went through adversity in the off-season when former head coach David Shores abruptly resigned on April 2. On the same day, Dampeer was tabbed the Panthers’ interim coach. Dampeer is the third coach in four years at Pell City. “We have gone through some transition,” Dampeer said. “We still have some The 2013 Pell City High School varsity football team.

kids that have played a lot last season. “There are some changes and it took some time to adapt. I think a lot of guys have gotten comfortable; I think guys understand their role. The coaches are just trying to teach details and the players are taking it well. In the summer time it is not fun; that is not the fun part. We are ready to get the season started to reward the kids for their hard work. The senior class has done well sticking together. I expect a lot of things from them.” The Panthers surprised several teams in their region last season. Dampeer believes their success in 2012 put a target on them for the 2013 season. “We have had great efforts from the kids, and the coaches has been working hard,” Dampeer said. “I think the kids are really buying into what we are doing in all three phases of the game. ing forward to an exciting year. “We do have some skill guys coming back and our defensive line is back. We also have some situations that we have to figure out quickly who is going to take leadership roles. We lost four offensive linemen and our quarterback. We lost a couple of linebackers and a secondary guy on defense. “Coming off a year that we felt we did some stuff to be proud of, we understand that we will have a target on our back going forward, but that is a good thing. We are going to work hard, and we are going to give everybody our best game as well as get the same thing back.” Region 7 is one of the toughest regions in Class 6A. The region includes perennial playoff teams Oxford, Gadsden City and 6A powerhouse Clay-Chalkville. Last season, the Panthers were able to upset Gadsden City and Oxford, which helped them secure the second seed in the region. Dampeer acknowledged that even
though he has several players returning from last season, this is a new team that can’t live off last season’s success. “We play in a very tough region, and you have to play every Friday night,” he said. “There are no breaks, and that’s good. We don’t get but 10 of them
like every year and especially offensively, it is a new team when you don’t have the same quarterbacks. It is a process and throughout that process offensive linemen have to gel, the quarterback has to gel with the offense. The defensive side of the ball is pretty new and they have to gel

together. Kids have to understand when plays are called offensively or defensively what we are trying to accomplish and what we are giving up.” Pell City returns a majority of their offensive weapons from last season’s team. Ira Burch and Damaurian Wills are the
key returners on offense. Both players made several game-changing plays for the Panthers as juniors. Wills had the 46-yard game-winning touchdown against Austin in the first round of the playoffs. Burch comes into his senior season with several collegiate teams interested in him, such as Clemson, Mississippi, Georgia Tech and Navy, according to Scouts.com. Burch mainly lined up last season for Pell City in the backfield as running back. He rushed for over 700 yards. “Offensively, we have Damaurian Wills, who is a four-year starter,” Dampeer said. “At times he started his freshman year. He has a lot of experience; people always asked who is that big running back? He was solid for us last year and I don’t expect anything less of that this year. You can really see him taking on a leadership role in a good way like encouraging kids. “Ira Burch, who missed some of the spring with a knee injury… is back to 100 percent. a lot of things from him. We have a senior receiving core: Cody Roberts, Casey Bishop, and Jackson Williamson. We may have some guys from the defensive side of the ball play a little bit.” The Panthers have a three-man battle for the starting quarterback job going into the season. “At the quarterback position, we could have up to three different guys,” Dampeer said. “Jackson Williamson, Ira Burch, Caleb Hurk, and those are two seniors and a sophomore. They all do things well; one guy may do a certain part better than the other guy. They all will be ready.” Pell City returns most of its defensive unit from last season. In 2012, the Panther defense allowed 322 points, which was a team record. In the off-season, Dampeer hired some defensive coaches that he believes will vastly improve their defense. “On defense, Tyler Goss, Justin Pope and Joe Pitman are all starters returning upfront,” Dampeer said. “They work really hard. Coach Bubba Robert coaches upfront and he does a good job techniques-wise. Those guys are understanding the position and to be unselfish. We are proud of those guys and they are learning a new scheme on the run. Casey Bishop, Milton Bothwell, Bennett Fisher, and Gabe McKinney: those kinds of kids are doing a great job at outside linebacker and will play multiple roles in our defense. “They’re kind of like the quarterback. They really do a lot of things, so we ask a lot of them and they are there for a reason.
Our secondary, we have three of the four back. They are playing different positions, but they have done a pretty good job of grasping it and being very coachable. “We hope that the defense will be a strong point for us; I am not saying that it hasn’t in the past. Our mentality overall is that we are going to stop people and control the ball when we want
to control it. We want to dictate the pace of the game, not the other way around. There is nothing better as an offensive play caller than to know the defense is going to shut them down and it changes the way you go at it.” Pell City opens the season tonight against Hueytown. The game will be aired on MY68 at 7 p.m.

Pigskin Preview 2013
Ragland seeks region title, playoff run in 2013 In Jonathan Nix’s first season as head football coach at Ragland, he led the Purple Devils to a perfect 10-0 regular season. But the season came to an abrupt end, as they were upset in the first round of the state playoffs by Hubbertville 42-35. Nix is looking to lead Ragland to a fourth consecutive region championship in 2013, and a run in the state playoffs that will hopefully go further than the first round. To do that, Nix said some young players would have to step up to replace players lost to graduation. “We lost three huge weapons in Devane Brewster, Jimmy Brock and Sawyer Merritt,” Nix said. “All three of these guys played both ways.” Key players returning include starting quarterback KiJana Lindsay, Matt Hicks, Jacob Brewster, Jaylen Brewster, Christian Morrow and Jesse Corn. Nix said Nick Smith has been moved to fullback on offense. Nix is also expecting a lot out of Shawn Wright at the wide receiver position. “An upcoming guy is freshman Jadon Killings,” Nix said. “He rushed for over 500 yards last year as an eighth-grader. He has a very strong work ethic.” Nix said they have three seniors anchoring the offensive line in Nate Turbville, Dakota Campbell and Chandler Caywood. Nix is expecting great things from his defense with eight returning starters.
“That is huge for us,” Nix said. “But we still need people to step up because we lost six people on offense. We have a lot of speed, but we need to get stronger. The guys have had a great summer in the weight room.” Ragland is in Class 1A, Region 6, a nineteam region, but Jefferson Christian was unable to field a team last year, and is expected to not have a team again this year. The Purple Devils open the season Sept. 6, at home against region foe Addison, a team that finished second in the region last year. Other region opponents include Falkville, Sumiton Christian, Southeastern, Shades Mountain Christian, Meek and Appalachian. Nix said the ultimate goal is to win the region title and go from there. “We want to host the
first round of the state playoffs, and go 5-0 in the playoffs and win the state title,” Nix said. Nix said to accomplish that, they all would have to “Attack The Day.” “That is our slogan this year,” Nix said. “We have to attack each day, not just on Fridays, but Monday through Thursday. We have to control every day, not just in football, but also in the classroom and at home. I want these guys to be good sons. I want them to make the most of each day. If we take care of that, all of this other stuff will fall in place.” The coaching staff has a few changes. Rush Rutledge left for Lincoln. Andy Eden and J.T. Caldwell head up the junior high program. Helping Nix on Friday nights are Brian Alred, David Box, Tim Chamless and Matthew Bone.

Springville eyes playoffs as 2013 season begins St. Clair Times associate editor
Keith Maple is starting his 13th year as head football coach at Springville. It is no secret that it has been a struggle since the Tigers made the move to Class 5A. While in Class 3A under Maple from 200105, the Tigers were one of the top teams in the state, posting a record of 49-13, including 7-5 in the state playoffs. But in Class 4A and 5A the past seven years, the Tigers have struggled to an overall record of 32-40, including 2-8 last season. Overall, Maple is 8153, including 7-7 in the state playoffs. The Tigers
have lost their last three state playoff games. “We had a really small senior class last year,” Maple said. “We had eight kids, but only four of them played. We also ran into a situation where we really didn’t have a quarterback. We had to move our wide receiver Zac Mayo to quar-

terback. That’s when we changed our philosophy on running the option.” Maple said they did take the opportunity to play some of the younger quarterbacks in Jody Garrison and Adam Smith, who are both sophomores this year. See Springville, Page 24

Alex Conwell hasn’t played in two years, but is out for his junior year. Maple said a young kid that shined last year, and in last year’s junior high championship game is freshman Jordan Byrd. “He might be starting at one of our corners on defense,” Maple said. “He will also see time at running back. He is just a great kid. He is one of those kids when you tell him one time, he does it right. He is a phenomenal athlete and the future looks so bright for him.” Maple said every offensive lineman is back except for one. He is anticipating what this group of players will be able to accomplish up front. Up front are players John David Nolan, Justin Wilkes, Ingram Goolsby, Shelby Emmal and Nick Kent. “Competitive wise, we should be a lot better,”
Maple said. “But it will all come down to how our young quarterbacks manage the game,” he said. “We will have to eliminate mistakes and interceptions.” Maple had just four seniors playing last year, six the year before and just one the year before that. The coach anticipates around 12 seniors playing this year and making an impact. “Our classes are beginning to get bigger, which means our numbers are increasing,” Maple said. “We have about 22 freshmen and 24 sophomores. We have over 60 kids on our team this year. “I am excited where we’re at, but we are still so young. We are looking for bigger and better things.” Springville is in Region 6 along with Walker, Pinson Valley, Center Point, Mortimer Jordan, Moody, Hayden and Curry. Maple said Walker is the team to beat, simply
because they won the region last year. “We played Walker real tight last year, and had a chance to beat them,” Maple said. “But we ended up fumbling the football on their 25 yard line. A lot of people just don’t understand that we were in so many games last year, until the fourth quarter. “We have so many players who play both ways due to our depth and age. When you are playing 17 kids both ways, that is tough. By the time the fourth quarter rolls around, we have nothing left. “We are in shape. I will give that to our kids, but when you are facing bigger schools with more numbers, it is tough. We can sit here and make all the excuses we want, but the bottom line is that we are getting better and more competitive. We have to learn how to manage situations.” Maple wanted to mention his kicker Tyler

Sumpter, who got rave reviews at camps this summer. “He was just a freshman last year, and he is phenomenal,” Maple said. “He puts the ball in the end zone almost on every kickoff. He plays F (running back) for us some too. For a big boy, he can move. He made All-County last year as a freshman. We are very lucky to have him.” Other players Maple believes can make an impact include Brandon

“Deondre Woody is a senior and we are expecting big things from him,” Maple said. “He is very athletic and has great hands. He is very football smart. He has been to several camps, and he has some colleges looking at him.” Maple said he is also expecting great things from Alex Foster and Jalane Ramsey. Maple said one thing that has been lacking the past several years is leadership. He can see guys trying to step up and take on that role. “Our goal is just like every year – make the playoffs,” Maple said. “If we can stay healthy and have a little luck, who knows what can happen. Yes, we have had some down years the past three years, but I tell them anything is possible. They decide how successful

Twenty years ago, the St. Clair County Saints defeated Hazelwood 18-13 to win the 1993 Class 2A state championship. The head coach – Alan Lee. Lee is back at St. Clair, and this is his third goaround. Lee was at SCCHS for two years in 1992-93, going 19-6. He returned in 1999 and stayed seven years until 2005, going 48-29. He made another return in 2011 and in two years he has led the Saints to a record of 10-12. All total, Lee has spent 11 seasons on the Saints sideline, and has an overall
record of 77-47, including 7-7 in the state playoffs. “It really doesn’t seem that long ago that we won the state title right here on our home field, but it was,” Lee said. “It would be nice to do it again, and that is our goal. It is the goal of the players and the coaches. These guys have worked hard during the offseason. We have also had a great first week of practice.” Lee said to make a strong run into the playoffs things have to go your way. “Things like injuries, turnovers, attitude etc.,” Lee said. “We have a group of guys who are really working hard, and if I could use one word to

describe them, it would be attitude. They are pushing each other, working together and just a fun team to coach. I am real happy with what I am seeing right now.” Lee said just as in life, his team is going to be
faced with some adversity. “That will be a key to our season, and that is how we handle adversity when it pops up,” Lee said. SCCHS is in Class 4A, Region 6 along with Oneonta, Fairview, Sardis, Douglas, Guntersville, Locust Fork and Crossville.
Lee said Oneonta is definitely the team to beat in the region. “They got into the championship game last year,” Lee said. “They will be strong again this year. We play them in week eight at home. Key players lost to grad-
uation last year included leading rusher Kartez Carr, who rushed for over 2,400 yards. “That is some big shoes someone is going to have to step up and fill,” Lee said. See SCCHS, Page 28

The Ragland Purple Devils work out in preparation for the 2013 season.
Other senior players gone include Josh Richey, Levi Green and Billy Kirby. When talking about key players returning, Lee started with returning senior quarterback Matt Hicks. “He is a great leader on the team,” Lee said. “He loves to play the game and is doing a great job. Juan Montgomery is a returning wide receiver, and he is the type player who can make big plays. DeShaun Williams is also going to be a big-play guy at receiver.” Lee also said Jonah Lee is coming back after not playing last year, and will be the starting running back. Other key returning starters include Willie Buckhanon, Justin Armstrong and Chris Holston. “We do have a little bit more depth this year,” Lee said. “We have some players coming along who are really stepping up, like sophomore center Brady Steele,

Mason Dixon, Justin Brown and sophomore quarterback Taylor Mickens.” Lee said keys to success are the attitude and effort his players are showing right now, even before the start of the season. “Another key is how we handle tough situations that we face during games,” Lee said. “We have to keep everyone healthy and together. We have some guys who love to play this game; we just have to stay focused on what we’re doing and take it one game at a time.” Lee’s coaching staff includes Lance Smith, Shannon Slaughter, Justin Brandon, Brian Hinds, Ellis Brown, Matt Hicks, Brian Noble and Jamie Lawler. SCCHS travels to Moody tonight to open the season against the Blue Devils. The two teams have played a total of 33 times with the Saints winning 14 of them and losing 19. last season,” Dorroh said. “I’ve got some people in mind that are ready to hurt some people after getting hurt for so long. I think with them being younger, getting some action in the game has helped out a lot because they will have a lot more experience playing the game. When it comes to them getting up there, they will have a year more of experience as a sophomore, junior and senior.” Fairley said the young players are happy to be playing this season. “They have made up their minds, and they are happy,” Fairley said. “They are glad that we are going after it. I think that is what they wanted. They don’t know that they are too small and not as old as the 12th-graders. They got in there and hung last year — they are a year older and they should do a little better just for that reason. The coaches did a good

looking to play tough against those other teams that we’re playing. We are looking to hang with them, and I think we can. I think with the people that we have out now, we are going to do good against most of the teams we play and we are going to come out with a good season.” In the first quarter of the opening game in 2012, Dorroh was thrown in as the quarterback after the Lions’ starter went down. Dorroh had a solid season under center as a junior, but this season, he thinks he will be even
better as a signal caller. “Last year, I kind of got thrown in there the first game,” Dorroh said. “This year is one more year of preparation. I got to learn the position. I have a lot more knowledge of the position. I know what to do and what not to do. I think I will make some better choices this season.” With head coach Bobby Fairley being hired two and half weeks before the season started, Dorroh offered to help the younger kids learn their positions.
“I like jumping in there,” he said. “I will play any position. I like playing anywhere from lineman to running back, of course quarterback, safety and defensive back. I have watched college football all of my life. I know a good bit about football, and I like jumping in there and helping the kids that don’t know as much about the position.” The senior said he has seen the younger players mature mentally and physically. He believes the freshmen and sophomore learned

Just two weeks from the start of the season, there was some doubt whether the Victory Christian Lions would take the field as a varsity team in 2013. When Senior Pastor David Weir made the announcement that the Lions were playing football this season, nobody was happier than senior Micah Dorroh. Going into the fall, Dorroh was the only senior player on the Lions roster. He said it was hard to hold the team together through the uncertainty. “It has been really tough, because I was the only senior until Friday (Aug.16),” Dorroh said. “It has been tough holding the team together and talk to people. Now that everybody has come out, we have pulled together. “I have talked up the new coach. He has done a really good job at practice, and I really like him. I am looking for us to do good.” The Lions have struggled their last few seasons. Victory Christian has not won a game since 2009. Dorroh believes this season’s team has a chance to end their 29game losing streak. “My senior year is going to be good,” Dorroh said. “I think we have a really good chance against ASD and Decatur Heritage. job with them, they are a lot further along fundamentally and they are a year older. They are going to hang in there and compete. “I can’t say that they are going to win, but they are going to hang in there. The kids have a great attitude. I can’t ask them to give more because they are giving me everything that they got.” Weir was also impressed
with Dorroh’s faith. “He really loves the Lord and it shows in everything he does, “Weir said.” We are really proud of him. He is an unbelievable leader.” The senior has lofty goals for his senior season. “I would love to win a few games and pull some upsets if we can,” Dorroh said. “Getting some big wins over some teams that we are not supposed to beat will make my senior year.”
