The best of televsion for the holiday season.

A Plethora of Holiday Programming Ahead By Candace Havens FYI Television It’s that time of year again when the networks do their best to bring a bit of cheer to viewers. We’ve gathered a selected list of fun holiday programming for the family. Some of it’s new and others are favorites from years gone by. We’ve grouped them by network to make them easy to find.

CBS Narrated by Jimmy Durante, it isn’t the holidays until we’ve seen “Frosty the Snowman,” airing Friday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. on CBS. And if that doesn’t provide your talking-snowman fix, “Frosty Returns,” narrated by Jonathan Winters, airs on the network Saturday, Dec. 14, at 8:30 p.m. There is no happier snowman than Frosty. But the little girl Virginia is not so cheerful when a playground bully tells her there is no such thing as Santa Claus. She sets out in search of the truth on “Yes, Virginia,” airing Friday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. and featuring the voices of Neil Patrick Harris, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Alfred Molina. A young reindeer wants to be a famous flyer like this father on “The Flight Before Christmas,” airing Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. The special features the voices of Norm MacDonald and Emma Roberts. And it isn’t animated, but there is an “I Love Lucy Christmas Special” on CBS, featuring two new colorized episodes from the 1950s series, airing Friday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. Lucy and the gang are always good for a laugh.

NBC NBC heralds the arrival of the holidays with a dazzling display of musical talent and the lighting of the world’s most

famous Christmas tree during the 16th annual “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” broadcast, airing Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. The starstudded 81st annual tree-lighting extravaganza will feature an array of musical guests performing current hits and holiday classics from Rockefeller Center in New York City. The Peacock Network follows up this time-honored tradition with a newer one – culling the archives of “Saturday Night Live” sketches for a compilation of those related to the holiday at hand, this one being an “SNL Christmas,” airing at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4. The humor may not be for the whole family, but this collection of holiday skits from the 38-year span of the variety series is one way of revisiting Christmases past. Nothing says Christmas like “It’s a Wonderful Life,” which has its annual NBC screening on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. Jimmy Stewart stars as George Bailey, a man down on his luck who learns what the world would be like without him. Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore also star. If you miss it the first time, there is an encore presentation on Tuesday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m.

ABC The Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation “Christmas in Conway” debuts Sunday, Dec. 1, at 8 p.m. on ABC. Andy Garcia plays a man who wants to relive a special memory with his sick wife (Mary-Louise Parker). There is also love in the air with the ailing woman’s

Smith. Even Willie Robertson of “Duck Dynasty” is stopping by. And on Thursday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m., ABC brings back a perennial favorite from 1965, “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” which is still adorable and poignant. Peter Capaldi begins his run as The Doctor in this year’s “Doctor Who” Christmas special

... As most people have realized, the moment you think of him in the part, you find it hard to think of anyone else.” As Capaldi will be the 12th Doctor, most Whovians figured this to be the last regeneration of the legendary Time Lord – after all, everyone knows they only get 12 regenerations. But Moffat sent fans’ heads spinning in October, when he made this comment at

the Cheltenham Literature Festival: “He can only regenerate 12 times. ...I think you should go back to your DVDs and count correctly this time. There’s something you’ve all missed.” Theories abound, but no answers are forthcoming. Fans will just have to watch this year’s Christmas special as the mystery of the enigmatic Doctor unfolds.

Favorite Holiday Movie Villains

Top 5 Holiday Movie Villains The beauty of Christmas stories is that there are few villains that stay villains. Ebenezer Scrooge is the best, most universally recognized example of this concept, a crotchety old man who has hardened his heart to love and joy – a man who makes it his life’s mission to make everyone else as miserable as he’s become. As the story progresses, Scrooge is taken on a magical journey to witness Christmases past, present and future, and somewhere along the way he remembers how to be happy. Scrooge is a character we all come across in our lives, and his role in “A Christmas Carol” helps us remember that, no matter how far gone a person is, there’s always a way back to happiness.

2. Stripe: “Gremlins” (1984) “Gremlins” isn’t on everyone’s list of favorite Christmas films, but it’s become a holiday cult classic. Stripe is the main baddie, a gremlin born of the hero, Gizmo, when he accidentally gets wet. As everyone knows, getting a Mogwai wet causes them to multiply ... and feeding them after midnight turns them into the nasty and wild reptilian creatures known as Gremlins. Stripe leads his band of Gremlins as they rip through town, destroying anything they like, attacking people and causing mischief everywhere. Stripe is a diabolical little demon, irredeemable, unlike most of the characters on this list, which may be why he’s so appreciated as a villain.

3. The Abominable Snow Monster: “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” (1964) The story of Rudolph is essentially a tale of misfits finding a place where they can be themselves and be loved for it. The whole business with the Abominable Snow Monster is quite dramatic for a kids’ special: the snow monster kidnaps Rudolph’s family, so the misfits lure the monster out of his cave, knock it unconscious and pull out all of its teeth (good thing they had an aspiring dentist with them). When the beast awakens, the heroic prospector, Yu-

kon Cornelius, and his sled dogs chase the monster over a cliff, the whole lot of them going over after him. Scary, no? But, this being a Christmas special, that can’t be the whole story. Cornelius ultimately manages to tame the snow monster, teaching him how to place stars atop Christmas trees – a very useful skill in a land where Christmas is the sole industry.

4. The Grinch: “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (1966) This furry green jerk has become the epitome of holiday villains. Unlike Ebenezer Scrooge, we never find out why the Grinch is so cranky that he seems to hate Christmas just for the sake of hating Christmas. But, like most good holiday stories, even The Mean One is redeemed in the end. After witnessing an outpouring of love and camaraderie by the Whos of Whoville – despite the fact that their Christmases were literally stolen from them – “the Grinch’s small heart grew three sizes,” prompting him to return all of the Christmas loot he had stolen, and help the Whos celebrate the best Christmas ever.

5. Mr. Oogie Boogie: “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993) Tim Burton’s stop-motion animated classic is unique in its ability to suit Halloween and Christmas seasons alike. Jack Skellington, the misguided-but-ultimately-redeemed protagonist, has Santa abducted so he can take his place and know what it’s like to spread joy. Unfortunately, the scheming Mr. Oogie Boogie gets a hold of the jolly old man, and the villain sets out to play a dangerous game with Santa’s life. Mr. Oogie Boogie represents the darkest places within ourselves, and Jack defeats his own demons by getting rid of this evil schemer. The Grinch in “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas
