Sunday morning, cyclists will be in mass for the Piedmont Foothills Road Race and the Cheaha Challenge Gran Fondo, the latter of which will begin and end on the campus of Jacksonville State University for the first time in its 21-year history. One day, two uniquely challenging events...both BEYOND TOUGH! Bragging rights for anyone who participates, regardless of where you finish! It takes a village. It takes a community. The City of Anniston has collectively worked together to open our community and treat friends, existing and those newly made, to some Southern hospitality. Thank you for sharing a weekend with us. You’ll experience some incredible and varied cycling terrain with breathtaking scenery. Enjoy. Come back. To the sponsors, volunteers, city leaders, Mike Poe and NEABA, Mayor Stewart, and the incredible residents of Anniston, Alabama, who have supported this race weekend for so many years, be proud of what you have created for all the World to see. Anniston is a hidden gem. Looking forward to continuing its rich legacy as we build a long future of racing and community events in Anniston. 4pm Willow Flies

Cairo were sitting at the pool with a guitar and a new groove emerged and eventually added Chuck Wood, Jeff Bailey, and Kevin Hagie to round out the sound. The chemistry between band members spawned a new, feel good, upbeat sound and ultimately opened up a door to a new genre The Begonias coined as “Bluesgrass”. This sound intertwines a rockin’ jam of folk, funk, that bluegrass twang, and of course the ever-important blues. www.thegypsybegonias.com @gypsybegonias (twitter) www.facebook.com/thegypsybegonias reverbnation google+

The Willow Flies began in a cabin on the banks of the Coosa River in 2004, where singer/ songwriters Jake Hale and Stephen Hartsfield began collaborating. In 2006 the pair parted ways to pursue other interests. Upon returning to Calhoun County in 2010, Stephen and upright bassist Corey Martin began working together. Jake returned to the project in 2013, 6pm and the Willow Flies were reborn. LAURA VAN GILDER - PRO CYCLIST (Cresco, PA) Mellow Mushroom Racing Team

My racing partnership with Mellow Mushroom began in Anniston, Alabama, in 2009. I found myself without a team that year, and Terry Phillis and his Mellow Mushroom Racing Team welcomed Kristen Lasasso and I into the program. Just a couple years prior to that had been my first time racing the Sunny King Criterium (with the Cheerwine team), and my first Sunny King victory. I was blown away with the professional level of production and presentation at the Sunny King event...big screens, live streaming of the race, live music, a festival for families, and kids races. The crowd atmosphere is unique because despite being a smaller city, the audience feels huge...incredibly supportive and enthusiastic about bike racing. I love being able to represent the local Mellow Mushroom at such a high level race. Being on the podium (on several occasions) has been really special for me. The Phillis family goes out of their way for me each year...hosting me and any teammates I might have. I feel fortunate to be treated like family.

unitedhealthcare Racing Team

Last year’s win at the Sunny King Criterium was emotional for me. I was very surprised. I went into the weekend not really knowing how I would measure up with the competition since it had been almost a year since my last pro race. But the struggle sprinting head-to-head all the way to the line was relieved when I knew I crossed the finish line first. I couldn’t believe what had just happened - my face fell into my hands after the finish line in astonishment! And the crowd was very enthusiastic. I could hear the cheers in and out of every corner. Southern hospitality is real! I had never raced Sunny King before last year, and everyone was so warm and helpful. And the festival was fun. I’m sure I will find some local food that is new to me. Cookies and baked goods are always a favorite. I may have to pay a visit to Bonnie Ray’s Bake Shoppe!

Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers is a wonderful sponsor who loves to be part of this exciting and dynamic sport. Cycling and pizza make a natural pairing because riding and dining are social, fun activities that round out our lives and enrich our souls. Since there are no Mellow Mushroom locations in my area, I look forward to my My cycling experience at Marian University in Indiana has been great. They even supported me to race Sunny King last year - and that paid off! And I learned how to balance different aspects meals there when I’m in Anniston! I’m fortunate to be involved with such a great sport. Women’s cycling has seen some exciting changes in the past year. Suddenly we are having the opportunity to race events at some of the most visible men’s races, such as the Tour de France and the Tour of California. There is a new organization called the Women’s Cycling Association which has generated a tremendous amount of visibility for women cyclists. It has hopes to grow the sport in a positive way to allow women to be recognized as professional athletes worthy of appropriate compensation and accolades that is in line with what men receive in our sport.

of life...be a well-rounded person, and to ultimately do good and be a strong leader. Everyday is a life lesson for the rest of my life, and I am grateful that I am learning them at Marian. Collegiate racing is also a great stepping stone, especially for women. Teamwork is also of the utmost importance. I’ve accomplished quite a bit with the support of Marian, and I’m blessed that Mike Tamayo UnitedHealthcare believed in me. I am excited to get back into racing with the Blue Train.

I am thrilled to return to race the Sunny King Criterium and am thankful for the continued support from the Women’s cycling is looking bright. There are so many young, strong women coming up the event sponsors, community, and volunteers who make this a fantastic and fun weekend of racing. ranks. I think the only way is up for women’s cycling.

Is there a cost to attend?

Frequently Asked Questions

The Noble Street Festival is FREE to attend! Many of the activities for kids are free, including art activities and projects, high-fives with Star Wars characters, performances on the Scion KidZone stage including those from Joe and Gillian McCary, and more! Some kids attractions, such as rides, bouncy houses, face painting, and balloons do require tickets, which can be purchased from designated ticket tents. Cheering on the cyclists from around the world at the Sunny King Criterium is free...as is listening to live performances from area musicians.

What is Taste on Noble?

A new name but the same great showcase of area restaurants. Twelve local restaurants in tents along Noble Street will serve up some teasing for your taste buds from 11:00am to 8:00pm. Enjoy modestly priced snacks, lunch and dinner while relaxing at outdoor tables in a festival atmosphere. Please “Taste on

Noble”...a portion of the funds you spend on food supports our donation to Relay for Life!

Is this a family event?

Absolutely! Kids of all ages will find Saturday afternoon in Downtown Anniston fun and entertaining! Wave hello to JSU’s Cocky!

What is the Hot Blast Music Cafe?

Right in the thick of the dining area, sit down and enjoy the musical talent of numerous local and regional acts throughout the day. Rest your feet, enjoy some shade, and take in the sweet sounds of some of the area’s best musicians...before they hit big!

What are the kids’ bike and running races?

So popular...so fun! Kids from tricycleage to Grade 6 will pedal their bikes a

few hundred yards, and cross the “big kids” Finish Line of the Sunny King Criterium course in front of cheering fans! Priceless. Have your cameras ready. The Mellow Mushroom Mad Dash running race is equally as exciting...a one-lap trot around the three-quarters of a mile bike race course, with a fun finish before fans! There is a fee to participate in each race; register at Classic on Noble from noon to 4:00p. The first 100 kids will receive a custom t-shirt and goodie bag.

Are there running races for adults? Wake up early Saturday morning for the YMCA/Anniston Orthopaedics 5K Run Around Town. Visit www.noblestreetfestival.com, and click on YMCA 5K for details and to register. And new this year before the kids’ Mellow Mushroom Mad Dash, for Men and Women, it’s the Mellow Mushroom Mad Dash Fitness Challenge! Running, snatches, box jumps,

push-ups...t-shirts and prizes...bring it!

What is the Sunny King Criterium bike race?

If you haven’t experienced the pro cycling event, DO check it out! It’s NASCAR on 2-wheels! Some racers will zoom by you at speeds in excess of 35mph! It’s the kick-off race on the official USA Cycling National Criterium Calendar (NCC), meaning...it’s a big deal! Lots of pro racers from around the World! “Criterium” is actually a lap race so you’ll see these athletes going around and around, led by the Sunny King Pace Car. So make some noise! See the winners crowned on the Eastman podium throughout the day then stick around for autographs and photos with the racers. And if you can’t be Downtown all day, watch the races on the E-Box Live Stream at home on your computer. To watch, simply visit www.NobleStreetFestival.com See you on Saturday!
