Calhoun County’s Most Wanted TV show presented at national conference By Sherry Kughn The Star Marketing Department Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson and his staff practice the adage, “If at first you don’t succeed, try again.” In years past, they tried running photographs of persons wanted for crimes in Calhoun County on a local cable channel, but a change in programming brought the idea to a halt. The idea did not die, though, and was resurrected as the popular television program, “Calhoun County’s Most Wanted.” Three years ago, several entities began working together to produce the show, including individuals from the sheriff’s office, operators of WJXS TV24, and a host from a local radio station. The three producers of “Calhoun County’s Most Wanted”, Amerson; radio personality Chris Wright of Rock 105.9 and Rock 98.3; and Sgt. Jon Garlick of the Calhoun County sheriff’s office, recently promoted the program at the National Sheriff’s Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., a venue with 3,500 law enforcement officials. They told those who attended their hourlong training session how they could create a partnership within their own counties and produce a similar show. They taught attendees the importance of working with the local media. Law enforcement officials were told that “Calhoun County’s Most Wanted” has resulted in the arrest of 1,509 criminals since its inception three years ago. “When we get a call telling us where we can go find a criminal ‘right now,’ ” said Amerson, “it saves valuable time.” Apparently, other law enforcement agen-

cies want to save on manpower and want to arrest criminals. The show’s producers have been asked by other agencies to travel and make similar presentations about the success of “Calhoun County’s Most Wanted” programming. With airtime paid for by local advertisers, TV24 is required to only run the show twice a week, but it often runs five or six times. “The media gets a good show and gives people a reason for tuning in,” said Garlick, who wears many hats in producing the show, including providing material for it, selling ads, doing voice-overs for the most wanted line-up, and sometimes hosting the program. Wright said many of the law enforcement officials who came into the presentation figured they would not be able to accomplish the task of putting together a program similar to the local most wanted television program. When the session ended, they thought differently. “They realized it isn’t out of reach,” said Wright. “If they want to do this, a lot of people in their community would like to be a part of it.” Wright volunteers his time as the show’s main host and said it is a win-win situation for him. “I have kids growing up in this community,” he said. “I want it to be safe. Also, this gives me additional exposure for my radio station and me. We want people to see we are concerned about making this a better community.” TV24's Mickey Shadrix, said he is proud that “Calhoun County’s Most Wanted” is

gaining attention. “The show provides a tremendous community service and gives local law enforcement a powerful tool to aid in capturing criminals,” he said. “It is very satisfying to know that this joint venture has made our community a safer place.” Calhoun County’s Most Wanted can be seen on TV24 every Tuesday night at 7:30 and Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.

Note: “The Crime Bulletin” was inspired by “Calhoun County’s Most Wanted” TV Show and works with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, Anniston Police Department and Oxford Police Department to provide information to our community.

Area Scam Alerts Courtesy of Oxford Police Department Telemarketing Fraud

Nigerian Letter or "419" Fraud

When you send money to people you do not know personally or give personal or financial information to unknown callers, you increase your chances of becoming a victim of telemarketing fraud.

Nigerian letter frauds combine the threat of impersonation fraud with a variation of an advance fee scheme in which a letter, mailed from Nigeria, offers the recipient the "opportunity" to share in a percentage of millions of dollars that the author, a self-proclaimed government official, is trying to transfer illegally out of Nigeria. The recipient is encouraged to send information to the author, such as blank letterhead stationery, bank name and account numbers and other identifying information using a facsimile number provided in the letter. Some of these letters have also been received via E-mail through the Internet. The scheme relies on convincing a willing victim, who has demonstrated a "propensity for larceny" by responding to the invitation, to send money to the author of the letter in Nigeria in several installments of increasing amounts for a variety of reasons. Payment of taxes, bribes to government officials, and legal fees are often described in great detail with the promise that all expenses will be reimbursed as soon as the funds are spirited out of Nigeria. In actuality, the millions of dollars do not exist and the victim eventually ends up with nothing but loss. Once the victim stops sending money, the perpetrators have been known to use the personal information and checks that they received to impersonate the victim, draining bank accounts and credit card balances until the victim's assets are taken in their entirety. While such an invitation impresses most law-abiding citizens as a laughable hoax, millions of dollars in losses are caused by these schemes annually. Some victims have been lured to Nigeria, where they have been imprisoned against their will, in addition to losing large sums of money. The Nigerian government is not sympathetic to victims of these schemes, since the victim actually conspires to remove funds from Nigeria in a manner that is contrary to Nigerian law. The schemes themselves violate section 419 of the Nigerian criminal code, hence the label "419 fraud."

Warning signs - what a caller may tell you:

• You must act 'now' or the offer won't be good. • You've won a 'free' gift, vacation, or prize. But you have to pay for "postage and handling" or other charges. • You must send money, give a credit card or bank account number, or have a check picked up by courier. You may hear this before you have had a chance to consider the offer carefully. • You don't need to check out the company with anyone. The callers say you do not need to speak to anyone including your family, lawyer, accountant, local Better Business Bureau, or consumer protection agency. • You don't need any written information about their company or their references. • You can't afford to miss this 'high-profit, no-risk' offer. If you hear these or similar "lines" from a telephone salesperson, just say "no thank you," and hang up the phone.

Leads still being pursued for missing woman By Elsie Hodnett Consolidated News Service RIVERSIDE — Investigators are continuing to pursue leads searching for a missing St. Clair County woman. Kelley Henderson Howard, 41, of Pell City has been missing since June 2. “We have made some discoveries, and have person or persons of interest,” Riverside Police Chief Rick Oliver said. Howard was last seen at Family Dentistry in Riverside, where she works as a dental hygienist. “Things are still the same,” said Robin Bush, Howard’s sister. “We are trying to work some and hang in there.” Bush said Oliver is tightlipped regarding the investigation. “He (Oliver) said when the investigation is done with, we (Kelley’s family) will be called in and go from the front to the back of everything. We can ask questions and find out answers at that point.” Bush said she has been back to work some. “I am working as much as I can,” she said. “Some days I get really upset at work and have to go home.” Bush said Howard’s husband, Boyd Howard, has not returned to work. “As every day and month goes by, it is harder on the family,” she said. “Not knowing is the hard part. I sit and think that I can’t call her or share things with her like I used to. And it is hard for Boyd to live without her.” Bush said Howard stays at home a lot. “It is hard to face the public,” she said. “When we do come out, everyone wants to know what’s going

on and it is hard for us to talk about it.” Bush said there are still rumors about her sister. “There are rumors going around that Kelley has been found, but Kelley hasn’t been found,” Bush said. “Kelley is still missing.” Bush said her father, Larry Henderson, has gone back to work some. “My mom (Peggy) stays home by the phone, waiting on any word,” she said. Bush said the family remains in close touch with one another. “Someone is always calling Shaun (Derusha, Kelley Howard’s son) to make sure he is OK,” she said. “We assure him that he will be all right.” Bush said Derusha and Boyd Howard speak daily. “We are a really close family,” she said. “We don’t go a day without talking to each other.” Bush said some of Kelley Howard’s high school friends have created a Facebook page to help search for Howard. “We are grateful to her friends for putting the page up,” she said. “Everyone wants to help.” Bush said she is a member of her sister’s Facebook page but is not associated with the page in any other way. “I keep up with what people are writing on the page, and have been in chat forums,” she said. “We want to let people know that the family is not accusing anyone, we just want her back. There are a lot of caring people out there. Say a prayer that the family has some closure.” Bush said she is grateful for media coverage on Howard’s disappearance. “It has been six weeks,” she said. “It is really getting unbearable on the family. The longer it

takes, the harder it is on us. We ask that everyone continue praying for us and keep us in mind.” Anyone with information about Kelley Henderson Howard’s whereabouts should contact the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department or the Riverside Police Department at 205-884-3333.
