New show presents variety of opera scenes Both Ellington, of Birmingham, and Clark, of Munford, are voice performance students at BSC, and Anderson, of Ranburne, is a voice performance student at University of West Georgia. Anderson made her opera debut as The First Lady in The Magic Flute at UWG in 2008. Ellington was the 2008 winner of the Alabama district Metropolitan Opera auditions and she then placed in the Southeast opera auditions. Wall teaches voice in Anniston, and has sung in Knoxville Opera and other regional opera companies, now having built up a repertoire of 21 roles. Both Clark and Wall have played principal roles in several Community Actors’ Studio Theatre musicals. Clark’s interest in opera increased as he studied voice from Wall. “I started looking at this and it really became a fascinating challenge,” Clark said. “I liked the stories opera tells, the way the music is written, and now, a chance to perform with seasoned musicians.” For the cast, this summer was the time to take up the classical music challenge. And there are hurdles, for sure. One has to be taught to sing opera. There are abrupt key changes in the songs, arias can last several minutes, the operas are written in different languages and characters must convey elements from underlying themes. “The composers of that day were philosophical,” Anderson explains. “Often, government and politics colored the plots.” Clark, Ellington and Wall

In The Merry Widow, an operetta by Franz Lehar, Clark is a man of mystery who spends his evenings at Maxine’s cabaret, reviving his being with champagne and dancing girls. The waltz performed by Clark and Anderson to the tune of “The Merry Widow Waltz” is heart warming. The Magic Flute — family friendly and amusing — by Mozart features scenes set in Egypt about Papageno, a comic birdcatcher dressed in feathers, and his search for the perfect wife. Other scenes include cuts from Cosi fan Tutte by Mozart and Arabella by Richard Strauss. For the sake of a bet, Ferando and Guglielmo woo and win each other’s sweethearts in disguise in Cosi fan Tutte while the story in Arabella concerns the impoverished Graf Waldner’s attempt to find a wealthy husband for his daughter. Opera, anyone? Opera for everyone is the call that goes out for Summer Opera Scenes, a program representing five operas, performed by a group of four accomplished Alabama singers. Summer Opera Scenes is a compilation of solos and duets from best-loved operas with dramatic intensity, flair and wit that should make for an appealing evening. Hervey The chosen Folsom scenes Artists in Action underline opera’s focus: real human beings — whether they are earls, countesses, maids or peasants — and how they solve their problems. The program will be held on July 30 at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Anniston. There is no admission fee, but donations will be accepted. If Summer Opera Scenes is as entertaining as its rehearsals are, attending it will be like a travel adventure, an escape to far-away venues and unexpected situations, all on a summer’s night. The scenes take the audience to a castle in Seville, an embassy in Paris and a hotel suite in romantic Vienna. Accompanied by Idabelle Gay, staff accompanist and vocal coach at Birmingham Southern College, and with input from local singer David Rice, sopranos Jennie Wall, Hannah Ellington and Joy Anderson share the sanctuary stage with baritone Caleb Clark.

For parents despairing of ever tearing Cats and Dogs and Beverly Hills Chihuahua out of the family DVD player, Disney gives us G-Force, a comedy about talking pet-shop dropouts trained as government agents. Thanks, Disney. And it’s in 3-D, too, with its higher ticket price. Thanks again! Kids love animal hijinx comedies, so this was a no-brainer, bottom-linewise. But the digital hijinx aren’t great. And despite a committed voice cast that includes two Oscar winners, the jokes aren’t all that either. And though one hesitates to use the word “charm,” this one plainly lacks that and a few other things Beverly Hills Chihuahua had going for it. Couldn’t they have used a frame or two of real guinea pigs? These animated guys are just chipmunks without the singing and the sweaters. Zach Galifianakis of The Hangover stars as a scientist who is about to lose his Homeland Security grant for turning wildlife into SPECIAL special agents. So he unleashes them on a global appliance king (Bill Nighy) who seems to have designs on world conquest. The team — three guinea pigs, a mole and a fly with cameras mounted on his chassis — call themselves G-

Gerbils become special agents on a mission to save the world in the Disney movie ‘G-Force.’ Force. But they don’t get the goods on the bad guy. The plug is pulled on the project (Will Arnett is the FBI agent who scorns them) and the chatty critters (they have voice-decoding gadgets) are condemned to the pet shop, at the mercy of little girls who want to dress them up and sadistic little boys.

What will Darwin (the voice of Sam Rockwell), Juarez (Penelope Cruz) and Blaster (Tracy Morgan) do? Why, break out and prove themselves, of course. They’ll bring along untrained guinea pig Hurley (Jon Favreau) because “We leave no rodent behind.” The jokes are of the “Don’t drop a pellet” and flatulent rodent variety.

Juarez has her own Facebook page, where she muses on the nature of love. And Blaster gives the dialogue little bursts of flavor — “Holla!” Bring the kids (they want to see it) on the condition that they NOT be allowed to ask for the DVD for Christmas and they NOT want to stop at the pet store on the way home.

The scares are cheap, the laughs mostly intentional and the ending is a real lulu in Orphan, the latest from the director of House of Wax. Violent, overlong and overtly sexual, Orphan is a parental nightmare painted in standard horror strokes. It feels too slow and moody for the Halloween crowd and too absurd and silly for more discriminating horror fans. Vera Farmiga revisits her Joshua role (Mom sus-

pects her child is a monster) but isn’t at her best playing Kate, a mother is still grieving from a stillbirth and still recovering from a bout with alcoholism. A pianist with two kids — the insolent 10-yearold Daniel (Jimmy Bennett, the youngest James T. Kirk in Star Trek) and deaf 5-year-old Maxine (Aryana Engineer) — Kate is still on medication and she and her architect-husband, John (Peter Sarsgaard), keep a floral tribute to the stillborn “Jessica” in their home. Yet Kate’s shrink (Margo Martindale) believes they’re ready to adopt. And who do they settle on? Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) is a solitary Russian-accented angel with a serious, wise-beyond-her-9-years demeanor. Why hasn’t she found a home? “I guess I’m different.” The nun in charge (CCH Pounder) allows herself a worried look, but sure, she’ll send Esther with Kate

and John. She’ll pick up American Sign Language on the drive home. What could go wrong? First it’s just her rebellious, name-calling brother (“You’re such a freak”), then it’s the mean girls at school who fall under Esther’s stink-eye. Bad things happen. Kate sees it. But John and the psychologist, thanks to Esther’s sweet act, can’t. Farmiga, despite her Joshua practice, never gets across Kate’s fear and alarm. The family dynamic here offered fertile ground for real world horror, but the script and Catalan director Jaume Collet-Serra give away the game too early. He reveals the child as a monster straight out. At least, between close-up jolts and loud shock sound effects, he does a decent job of laying out the clues. Virtually every over-the-top laugh makes a certain amount of sense by the time we finally reach the formulaic finale.

At the end of this drearily formulaic romantic comedy, as our two leads are finally admitting they’ve fallen for each other (no spoilers here, folks), Katherine Heigl’s character asks Gerard Butler’s why he’s in love with her. Basically he says he has no idea, only he phrases it with a word we can’t reprint here. Our sentiments exactly. Obviously, in a battle-of-the-sexes comedy like this, the guy and the girl who hate each other at the beginning realize they’re meant for each other by the end. But there’s nothing even remotely likable, much less lovable, about Heigl’s Abby Richter. She’s a control freak who runs a tight ship at a

Sacramento TV station, producing the morning news with unflappable efficiency and zero creativity. She uses the same approach in her personal life, which is why she’s hopelessly single, despite the fact that she looks like Katherine Heigl. Sure, it’s meant as a joke, but come on. The idea of a woman being so rigid and frigid is purely archaic — which is why it’s so disheartening that the script comes from three women: Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, who had much greater success writing female characters in Legally Blonde and The House Bunny, and first-timer Nicole Eastman. (Robert Luketic, who also did better work with Legally Blonde, directs the slapstick antics in rather unspectacular fashion.) When Butler’s brash Mike Chadway gets hired to boost ratings at the station after hosting a popular cable-access show on dating, he and Abby immediately clash. Naturally, that will change.

Coraline

The movie, adapted from Neil Gaiman’s enormously successful book of the same name, follows 11-year-old Coraline (voiced by Dakota Fanning), whose wish to replace the adults in her life leads to a nightmarish experience in a parallel universe. She finds herself in another world where charming replicas of her parents invite her to live with them. There’s a major hitch, of course. Coraline’s “Other Mother” (Teri Hatcher) makes her a prisoner and demands unyielding devotion. For all its visual delights, however, the film remains more an engaging spectacle than a connective drama. Director-writer Henry Selick doesn’t reach for the kind of universality that would enrich the movie. It’s a shame because Fanning’s performance, from cheeky to sweet, from bored to anguished, should have been part of a bigger, deeper movie.

The Great Buck Howard

Buck Howard (John Malkovich) is a vaudevillian mentalist who gets through each day by reliving his best moments from 30 years ago, even though the rest of the world has moved on. Colin Hanks plays Buck’s assistant,

who caters to his strange needs and helps maintain his boss’ delusion that he is still a beloved personality. A problem is the dull Hanks (his father is Tom, who produces and acts in the film). A bigger problem is Hanks’ character, Troy, a law school dropout. The story is Troy’s, not Buck’s, and the film is all the less interesting because of it. Malkovich is merely a vessel through which Troy learns an important lesson on the way to establishing his own writing career.

The gang’s all here: the psychotically righteous Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley), the dangerously smart Adrian Veidt (Matthew Goode) and the shape-shifting blue nudist with seemingly limitless power, Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup). The movie exposes the glaring problems with the original material: The dialogue stinks and is filled with cliches. But when it marches

Whitney Houston previews new CD Music

Associated Press NEW YORK — Whitney Houston says her daughter’s support helped fuel her as she geared up for her comeback record. “She was with me every step of the way: ‘Mom, you can do this.’ When I get discouraged and I get like, ‘This is tiring, this is wearing me out, I’m just not at that point,’ she’d just go, ‘No, mom, you can do this, get up, get up,”’ Houston said of 15-year-old Bobbi Kristina in an interview on Tuesday. “She encourages me and inspires me, when I look at her and I look at her eyes and I see myself, I go, ‘OK, I can do this. I can do this.”’ The 44-year-old superstar is releasing I Look to You on Sept. 1. It’s her first album in years on Arista Records. On Tuesday evening, she premiered several tracks before an industry audience that included her only child, mother Cissy Houston, cousin Dionne Warwick, Alicia Keys and Diane Sawyer. Houston is one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, but her career stalled for years and her pop princess image imploded as she battled drugs and endured a troubled (and now defunct) marriage to Bobby Brown. The singer did not allude to those problems as the reason for her layoff in her interview. Instead, she said she was more interested in raising her daughter than making another album. “I kind of got comfortable with being left alone, just being a mom who would take her daughter off to school, and who would pick her up from school. I liked that vibe, I liked that feeling, because I never really had the opportunity,” said Houston. “I was always traveling with her all the time.” While Houston is relishing her return to the music, she says she’s not quite ready to be back in the spotlight again. “I am not geared for it. It goes along with the territory. I’m still going to remain the very quiet, private person I’ve been for the last 10 years,” she said. “I just want to be recognized for my music and for what it does and how it inspires people and how it makes people feel as opposed to talking about Whitney all the time kind of thing. That’s all done, it’s passed and I would just like to be recognized for my music.”

CHICAGO — Jordin Sparks is living a high-decibel life. She’s traveling across the country as a special guest on the Jonas Brothers tour, performing at arenas packed with girls who, as Sparks puts it, “scream way up here, and they just hold it for four-hours straight.” And even away from the stage, resting in her downtown hotel room on a weekend afternoon, the 2007 American Idol winner is met with the shrill yelps of yet another fan. This time, it’s her dog Maggie. These days, Maggie serves as Sparks’ main companion on the road. While her family traveled with her when she put out her platinum-selling, self-titled debut at age 17, these days, they join her when they can. Now 19, Sparks has grown up a bit, and she says you can tell from listening to her sophomore CD, Battlefield. How do you compare Battlefield with your 2007 debut? There’s a lot more growth so my voice sounds a little bit more mature.

I wanted to pick songs that I related to on some sort of level and that I wouldn’t mind singing for the rest of my life. ... Then there’s four songs that I actually wrote and I’m really, really excited about. If you could choose one song from the album for someone to listen to, which would it be? One of the songs that is really, really important to me — and it’s one that I wrote — it’s called “Faith.” We wrote that four days before the (presidential) inauguration and it was one of those things. And we were thinking about everything going on in the world and our economy and how there’s a sense of hopelessness around for a lot of people. With everything going on around you in the music world, how do you stay connected with what’s happening in the real world? It’s when you detach from the real world that your head starts to get bigger and you’re like, ‘Hey, the world revolves around me.’ So I definitely try to keep my inner-circle really tight and I keep my friends really close. I need people who are going to tell me exactly how it is — tell me if my outfit looks

bad or if a song sucks, if my performance is horrible. You’re a big fan of Michael Jackson. How did you take the news of his death? The crazy thing is, the day before — literally, the day before — I sang “P.Y.T.” in my set. And I’ve been doing that a lot. I love singing his (songs). So I did “P.Y.T.” and “The Way You Make Me Feel” last year on tour and all these different things. Then all of a sudden he passed away, and (I said), “I totally did his song yesterday.” And we were doing “A-B-C, as easy as ...” and doing the dance and everything and all of a sudden he was gone. And we were just like, “This is insane.” Michael was always in the public eye. How do you deal with protecting yourself when it comes to the media? I’m open to an extent. That may not change too much with Burn Burn, but the band’s first disc since 2005’s Healthy in Paranoid Times is a nice return to the soaring rock they made their name on. Lead singer Raine Maida sounds more mature than ever — mostly forsaking his once eye-popping falsetto — and brings a poetic touch to his tales of everyday struggle and hope, and guitarist Steve Mazur offers plenty of fine lead work throughout. Rootsy folk rock from Assembly of Dust Assembly of Dust Some Assembly Required

With at least one guest performer on every cut, Assembly of Dust’s second studio album could have been a mess. Instead, frontman Reid Genauer wisely keeps on the focus on his songs, and their considerable charms are enhanced by the parade of talent on Some Assembly Required. The result is a rootsy folkrock record reminiscent of the Band, in part because Genauer’s singing recalls Richard Manuel and Rick Danko. His warm, rustic tenor is the kind of voice to which fans at multistage outdoor festivals gravitate. Genauer’s New York City-

based quartet blends elements of guitar rock, bluegrass, jazz and the blues with help from such luminaries as Tony Rice, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, David Grisman, John Scofield and Richie Havens. Topics include domestic disharmony, empty dreams and Leadbelly, but when Genauer sings, “Hold on tightly, no one’s steering this thing,” it’s not true. There are times when technology makes our life easier, maybe even better. But sometimes, the only way you can deal with a pile of cat poop is a scoop. I own two cats, both as heavy as bowling balls. We have a simple arrangement; I feed them, they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t knock over my Wii and my pile of games on the floor. The downside is they use lots of cat litter. For years, my wife and I have fought over whose turn it Dan Whisenhunt was to scoop it up. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d trade the chore for Pushing Buttons some other undesirable task. Cleaning the kitchen and taking out the garbage was good for one cat-litter scooping, as I recall. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d conveniently â&#x20AC;&#x153;forgetâ&#x20AC;? that she cleaned it last time and she would have trouble remembering I did it the time before that. It requires bending over, getting on your knees, dragging small kernels of litter under your feet and in your bed sheets. The logical thing wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been to write this off as the price for cohabitation with animals. As an American, however, I felt it was my duty to investigate an easier way. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be surprised to learn that even though we have small devices that can play several albums worth of music and cars that can get 60 mpg, we are notably deficient in our litter box technology. I researched several self-scooping products. Most were panned by users for reasons too disgusting to recount here. After an hour or so, I came across the ScoopFree Automatic Litter Box. Unlike the other models, it used FreshStep Crystals instead of clumping litter. A few minutes after the cat used the bathroom, a rake would brush their deposits into a small trap at the end, readying it

for easy disposal. The Web site promised to â&#x20AC;&#x153;simplify your life,â&#x20AC;? for a mere $140. The box came with one disposable cartridge containing the FreshStep litter. For the first week or so, things were great. The cats werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afraid of the new box. (My big orange tabby, Donovan, actually came running around the corner when he heard the rake start to hum. After it swept the waste away, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d sit in front of it and stare at the box for five minutes as if heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d witnessed a miracle.) The product says two-cat households need tray replacements every two weeks or so. We learned this time varies, particularly when your cats are blackmailing you into feeding them around the clock. So a week goes by and we buy a new cartridge, but not before we shelled out an eye-bulging amount â&#x20AC;&#x201D; $15! That meant weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be shelling out more than $60 a month so we wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to bend over for five minutes. Doing some more investigating, I thought Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d found a perfect solution. The Forever Litter Tray fits the specs of the ScoopFree, but it is a reusable plastic container. We could just refill it with FreshStep Crystals and dump it in the garbage as needed. Problem solved. Or so we thought. We began to notice leaking on the floor. I consulted the Web site and said our cats were what are known to Forever Tray users as â&#x20AC;&#x153;side pee-ers.â&#x20AC;? Because the box was plastic and not cardboard, nothing was there to absorb the urine. Except, of course, our hardwood floors. For the last few weeks, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve managed to get by with a plastic garbage bag under the thing, but the whole set up is beginning to look a bit ridiculous. I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford $60 worth of litter a month and canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t continue mopping up cat urine and having the top half of my house smell like a shelter. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s back to scooping for us. I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my wifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s turn.

A big quest for ‘More to Love’

HOLLYWOOD — In the tradition of 13 bachelors, 5 bachelorettes, Flavor Flav, Tila Tequila and the rest of the copycats, here comes Luke Conley, another young man on a very public quest for love. Fox’s new More to Love, which premieres Tuesday and runs for eight weeks, is the TV reality show for people who would never be seen on The Bachelor or Dancing With the Stars. The casting call was for “curvy and voluptuous” women who would compete for the heart of a “big, broad” man. Enter Conley, 26, a former college offensive lineman, who wants to find a wife more than he wants to be the next reality star. In June, Conley speed-dated 20 ladies in 25 days while living in the top-secret bubble of a Bel-Air mansion, without a phone, a TV or the Internet — and in front of 150 crew members, 10 fixed 24-hour cameras and 10 cameras on the move. Not that being filmed around-theclock bothers Conley, a real-estate investor from Santa Maria who is prone to uttering lines like, “If she’s got a big behind, she’s a friend of mine.” Conley says he never watched dating shows. But when he came upon a Craigslist ad seeking men who love full-figured women, he sent an e-mail that began, “Sugar, look no further. I am the man for you!”

Luke Conley and Mandy leave the pool area for their one-on-one date inside on the new Fox reality show ‘More to Love.’ By then, production was 10 days from beginning and the search had been narrowed to two men. “We totally switched,” says executive producer SallyAnn Salsano. “We all fell in love with Luke because he is so genuine. He makes the girls feel comfortable.” A few days later, Conley, 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 330 pounds, moved into the mansion, hoping to meet the love of his life in front of millions of Americans. Selected from 5,000 applicants,

the bachelorettes range in ages from 21 to 37 years and in weight from 180 pounds to 279 pounds. Some are students, a few are teachers, and one is a rocket scientist. Most told producers they seldom date. Because the women have struggled in the dating scene and Conley has had only one serious relationship, the tone of the show is different from executive producer Mike Fleiss’ other dating shows. ABC’s “The Bachelor is about beautiful people living a beautiful life and

hopefully finding a beautiful love,” he explains. “This show is like a sporting event. You’re rooting for someone to find love.” Conley’s dating whirlwind began at the mansion with a mixer, and ended with five women going home and the rest receiving promise rings and an invitation to move in. “To do this amount of dating and meet this many amazing women would probably take two to five years of my life,” Conley says. “And God knows how much money.” Conley says he’s tried to focus on what he’s feeling — and not that this is all happening within the context of a TV show. “The difficult part has been having to talk so much about what I’m feeling,” he says. “I usually like to spend a lot of time in thought and process things before I just open and verbalize them. I feel that words are very powerful, so I want to choose them correctly.” His heart, he says, is pointing toward marriage. But he’s worried that his TV adventure could still lead to heartbreak if the woman of his dreams has a false perception of who he is because of the glamorous bubble in which they’ve met. “I’m hoping that when I put my heart on the line that I don’t end up being heartbroken because I am planning on making myself vulnerable to a special woman at the end of this whole thing.”

Simply put, we consume a lot of oil, and the suppliers want to keep it that way. Yup, we’re addicts, but the program doesn’t tell us how to break this addiction, or how to curtail speculation, or keep prices low. Moreover, it doesn’t follow the pipeline deeply enough. Aren’t some of the world’s great oil fields, like Saudi Arabia’s Ghawar or Mexico’s Cantarell, already in decline? How will this affect prices at the pump? Still, all told, a very interesting hour.

Show business is tearing the Frampton clan apart! OK, maybe that’s overstated. But at the very least, it’s putting some serious strains on the family fabric. As a rock musician, father Peter, best known for his 1976 monster album, Frampton Comes Alive!, has always lead a peripatetic lifestyle. His current U.S. tour has him hopscotching across the country. Meanwhile his wife, Tina, and young daughter, Mia Rose, have relocated to Los Angeles from their home in Cincinnati so the precocious 13-year-old can pursue an acting career. “It’s stretching us pretty thin,” says Peter. “We would all prefer to be living together all the time. Now, I have to keep doing the hippity hop between Los Angeles and Cincinnati.” The move seems to be paying off for the aspiring actress. Mia Rose’s resume has gained heft since she landed a recurring role on ABC Family’s new hit series, Make It or Break It. The drama is a pommel-horse opera about girl gymnasts. Because Peter’s recording studio is attached to the family manse, he now spends more time in the Queen City than anyone else. Usually alone. The irony of a British rock idol marooned in the Midwest is not lost on Frampton. “When Tina and I started getting serious, I told her, ‘Alright, but I’m not moving to Cincinnati (her hometown).’ Now look where we are,”

he says, laughing. Frampton probably should have seen where his daughter was headed a decade ago. “When she was 3 1/2, every time a ToysRus commercial would come on, she would say, ’I want that. I want that,”’ he recalls. “Then a little girl came on during one of the commercials and looked around at me and said, ‘I can do that.”’ The die was cast. She began appearing in school and local productions. “It gave me the idea I want to do this — being somebody I’m not,” she says. Still, it took a lot of pleading to get her parents on board for the move to California. “I wanted it really bad. My mom is very supportive, but she says the minute I don’t love it, we’re gone,” Mia Rose says. “She’s definitely not the typical stage mom.” As a recurring character, Mia Rose doesn’t have to be on set every day. “I can be a regular kid,” she says of her schedule. “I still have friends I hang out with. Everyone is so excited for me. I do miss a lot of school, but they’re very flexible. Sometimes I have to do school on the set.” All in all, the move is working out pretty well. Except that she’s an adolescent thousands of miles from her father. Mia Rose, who inherited some of her dad’s musical talent, recently wrote her first song, “My Memories,” with these lyrics: “Warm sheets they hold me tight “Their smiles are so bright “He moves from place to place “Her smile begins to fade.” Autobiographical?
