Anniston’s Knox Concert Series has announced five performances for the upcoming season. “We are proud, in our 64th season, to continue to bring a wide variety of quality concerts to the Anniston area,” said Julia Segars, CEO of the Knox Concert Series, in a press release. “With country, cabaret, classical and Camelot, this year’s lineup offers up a menu for most tastes.” The performances include: n Country singer Sara Evans on Oct. 1 n Lerner and Loewe’s romantic musical Camelot on Nov. 23 n Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra on Jan. 23 n Tony-award winning actress and singer and Bernadette Peters on March 6 n Alabama Symphony on May 1 In addition to these performances, the series will also host the Nutcracker on Dec. 6, which is not included in the season ticket. Music video directed by Heath Ledger debuts LOS ANGELES — Heath Ledger’s latest directorial work has been released. The music video Ledger directed for “King Rat” by Modest Mouse debuted on MySpace.com Tuesday. The six-minute, animated video is both whimsical and dark, showing whales and dolphins aboard a ship, fishing for humans in the water. It concludes with a message in white letters on a black screen: “This began with our friend, a great defender of life, and was completed in his spirit.” Ledger was 28 when he died last year. Modest Mouse announced in March that it would release the video in honor of Ledger’s last piece of work as a director, according to spokeswoman Lisa Markowitz. The actor previously directed a video for one of Ben Harper’s songs. — Associated Press

Incubus’ success no shocker Music
★
Newsday When music historians look back on this decade, the most consistently successful modern rock band may turn out to be a bit of a surprise. Green Day? A good guess. U2? Certainly a contender. Red Hot Chili Peppers? Another strong choice. It turns out, according to Billboard magazine, that it is Incubus. And no one is more surprised about that than Incubus singer Brandon Boyd. “It’s strange,” Boyd says, laughing. “We never really wanted to be the band that achieves omnipresence. That’s not what we were shooting for. ... We were doing our best to explore weird, wonderful sounds that turn us on and make our eyebrows do funny things.” Somehow, though, the band from Calabasas, Calif., has managed to do both in the past decade, as its new greatest hits compilation, Monuments and Melodies, has shown. “It’s hard to reconcile,” Boyd says, calling from his Los Angeles home. “I know how weird it is to even have one song that gets on the radio for a lot of people to hear. When I read that statistic, I looked away from it, not knowing what I’m supposed to think. All I could come up with was, ’That’s wonderful. Who do I thank?”’ With “Black Heart Inertia,” the first single from Monuments and Melodies reaching No. 7 this spring, that thank-you list just got a bit longer. “Black Heart Inertia,” recorded during the Like Grenades sessions in 2006, is Incubus’ 14th consecutive Top 20 modern rock hit, giving it the longest current streak and the third-longest in the chart’s history, according to Billboard. “We’re in a pretty illustrious group of peers with the Foo Fighters and the Chili Peppers,” Boyd says. “That’s pretty weird for us.” What makes it weirder is that Incubus has basically been on hiatus since 2007. Boyd, who tried a return to college to get a bachelor’s degree in fine arts for a semester, opted instead to focus on research of turn-of-thecentury photography that inspired a series of paintings and his first art exhibit. Guitarist Mike Einziger went to Harvard University to work on a degree in music composition. Drummer Jose Pasillas had a daughter and spent the time “being a normal dad.” Bassist Ben Kenney recorded two solo albums. With all those life changes to account for, Boyd laughs at the idea that “Black Heart Inertia” signals any sort of idea about Incubus’ new musical direction. “We have no idea what will come next,” he says, adding that the band hasn’t even set a time frame for returning to the studio. “Even when we’re not writing, we’re still working on cataloging our ideas. Each of us is pooling our thoughts, seeing what random new things arrive.”

Break up with wife painful but inspiring for Charlie Robison Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Country rocker Charlie Robison didn’t have to retreat to a cabin in the hills or listen to old records to find inspiration for his new album, Beautiful Day. He found it in his collapsing marriage to Dixie Chick Emily Robison. “We decided we were getting a divorce on the day I was in the studio cutting,” Robison said recently. “It wasn’t a look back on divorce or looking forward at what it could be. It was actually what was going on at the time.” The couple split in 2008 after nine years together. Court papers say their marriage had become “insupportable because of discord and or conflict of personalities.” They have three children. Robison, a 44-year-old Texas-based singer-songwriter, says the demands of their careers became too much. His former wife, a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter for the Dixie Chicks, has sold tens of millions of records as part of the Grammy-winning trio. They won five Grammys, including album of the year, in 2007 for their last album, Taking the Long Way Home. “It’s not the fault of either one of us,” said Robison. “We were just following our careers. That’s pretty much why a lot of entertainment relationships don’t work.” The uproar over the Dixie Chicks’ negative remarks about former President George W. Bush in London in 2003 didn’t help. “That was an extremely stressful time,” Robison
recalled. “She was pregnant with our twins. I had put a record out and was gone all the time and she was gone all the time. So it definitely was a time when a couple needed to be there for each other, the most important time, and neither one of us was there.” Emily Robison declined comment for this story. But Charlie says that since the split they’ve become friends again and have dinner with their kids a few times a week and take family vacations together. He let her hear the songs as he finished them because he didn’t want there to be any surprises. “It helped that she is a songwriter as well,” he said. “She was very understanding. If she had been writing a record at the time, I’m sure she’d be writing about the same type of thing.” On his CD released in June, Robison portrays a man who’s hit bottom and begun to see better days: “Hope this never ends, raise my face into the sun, hope this never ends, guess you never were the one,” he sings on “Feelin’ Good.” While making the record, he lived across from the Greyhound bus station in San Antonio, in a loft apartment with mismatched furniture and strewn beer bottles, “the quintessential bachelor pad,” he recalls. “I was writing things the night before I’d go into the studio to cut them. It was a real stream-of-consciousness thing. I didn’t have to think about how I was going to put things, I was basically dictating what was going on that day,” said Robison, who wrote six of the 10 tracks and self-produced the disc. Robison has released seven albums of rootsy country rock since 1996, mostly on independent record labels.

Gloriana Gloriana
It all sounds a little too easy for Gloriana. With four singers — 20-something brothers Mike and Tom Gossin and teenage belters Rachel Reinert and Cheyenne Kimball — who all look and sound like they arrived from Nashville central casting for the next Lady Antebellum or Sugarland, there are reasons to be skeptical about the “realness” of the group and their debut Gloriana. Sure, their first single, “Wild at
Heart,” sounds great, a stomping rock-tinged number that plays like a countrified Fleetwood Mac while it builds some pretty four-part harmonies, and the “Go Your Own Way”-ish “How Far Do You Want to Go?” is just as good. But in between, there are songs that sound a little too mechanized, from the Martina McBride-ish “All the Things (That Mean the Most)” to the Rascal Flatts-y “The Way It Goes,” and songs that sound ill-suited for multiple singers, including the oddly structured ballad “Change Your Mind.” There are also droopy ballads, such as “Cry on Command” and “Lead Me On,” where Gloriana plays it way too safe and ends up making you wonder how long this partnership will hold. It’s too bad because there’s certainly a lot of potential here, something producer Matt Serletic mines very well. All that promise will likely make Gloriana country’s next sensation, but they will need to dig deeper to land success that’s any broader than that. — Glenn Gamboa. Newsday
Frisell channels Disfarmer Bill Frisell Disfarmer
Country-leaning, genre-hopping jazz guitarist Bill Frisell’s Disfarmer project is an instrumental suite of songs inspired by the life of photographer Mike Disfarmer, a shadowy figure who specialized in portraits of the working-class citizens of Heber, Ark., in the 1940s and ’50s. The CD sleeve is filled with dignified, melancholy pictures taken by Disfarmer, who died alone in his studio — his body, according to Frisell’s notes, “covered with mice and surrounded with cans of Spam.” Disfarmer aims to shine a light on the shooter’s work — Frisell compares him to “misunderstood artists who never had the recognition they deserved during their own time: Vermeer, Van Gogh, Charles Ives and Henry Darger.” But it also works quite nicely as wonderfully rootsy and evocative music for listeners not
clued in to its title subject. Accompanied by the superb ensemble of violinist Jenny Scheinman, bass player Victor Krauss, and string whiz Greg Leisz, Frisell mixes a few period pieces — Arthur Crudup’s “That’s All Right, Mama,” Hank Williams’ “Lovesick Blues,” and “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love With You)” — and an inventive three-part rewrite of the fiddle tune “Arkansas Traveler” with delicate originals that are by turns haunting and sprightly. And, like Disfarmer’s photos, they are not the slightest bit sentimental. —Dan DeLuca
Hank Williams III plays it odd and hot A**jack A**jack
Outlaw country? You don’t know from outlaw till you’ve dealt with the demons inside the son of Hank Jr. and grandson of the rambling man. For all of the country cool his lineage should evoke, Hank Williams III plays it odd and hot, taking on the depressed tension of his forebears as well as their addictions, literary and literal. While those obsessions have yielded elegant traditional country songs and honky-tonkers wistful in their execution, there’s a darker side to Hank III — the hard-core deathmetal one he’s long put forth in concert as A**jack. Finally committed to recording
such a fantastic morass, A**jack’s debut goes beyond Williams’ hellbilly ruckus to find his sludgy frenzy furthered. It had to — Hank III wrote and performed this shebang alone. That gives focus to A**jack’s tunes of menace, abhorrence, and heartache, as if he’s on a solitary mission to Hades. The violent “Chokin’ Gesture” and “Cut Throat” are short and notso-sweet songs filled with curt contempt and gut-shot screams never to be confused with C&W’s good ol’ boy hoots ’n’ hollers. “Cocaine the White Devil,” on the other hand, takes its good old time skulking around its hulking disgust. William S. Burroughs couldn’t have done it better. Sensational. —A.D. Amorosi
Little Richard, Ray Charles reissue landmark recordings Little Richard The Rill Thing King of Rock and The Second Coming
As the titles attest, by the time of these comeback attempts in 1970, ’71, and ’72, Little Richard still had an audaciously flamboyant sense of his musical importance. Commercially, the albums didn’t live up to the boasts, but more often than not the music does: The sets are a worthy corollary to the preening pianopounder’s seminal ’50s hits. The Rill Thing, cut in Muscle Shoals, finds Richard cutting deep Southern R&B grooves. In addition to his own socially conscious “Freedom Blues,” he gets some payback on his disciples in the Beatles with a funky reworking of “I Saw Her Standing There.” King of Rock and Roll is closer to Richard’s original style, while using contemporary material. It’s most entertaining when he launches into preacherly raps by way of introduction to songs such as “Joy to the World” and “Born on the Bayou.” The Second Coming reunites the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer with his original producer, “Bumps” Blackwell. Some of the selections — “Mockingbird Sally,” “Rocking Rocking Boogie” — do sound like throwbacks. But the set also has an
intoxicating New Orleans feel, thanks to the likes of “Second Line” and “The Saints,” Richard’s take on “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
Ray Charles Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, Volumes 1 and 2
Add strings and horns and backup singers to country music? In most cases, such ornamentation robs country of its essential character. Check out the recent “Naked Willie,” in which some of Willie Nelson’s early ’60s recordings were stripped of their pop trappings — and improved as a result. The special genius-plus-soul of Ray Charles makes these landmark 1962 recordings work as well as they do. The 24 selections mix big-band swingers (”Hey Good Lookin’,” “You Are My Sunshine”) with lush string orchestrations (”Your Cheating Heart,” “I Can’t Stop Loving You”). It may not be pure country, but it’s pure Ray Charles. —Nick Cristiano

To follow their most successful albums — 2005’s breakthrough Good News for People Who Love Bad News and 2007’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank — Modest Mouse needed a new release to maintain momentum. The EP No One’s First and You’re Next is pretty good as stopgap albums go, filled with polished versions of B-sides recorded during the sessions for the previous two albums. “Satellite Skin” is as catchy as any of its recent singles and “Perpetual Motion Machine” is as delightfully unexpected, giving something good for fans to play while The Mouse is away.

Paramount didn’t show critics ‘G.I. Joe’ By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — It’s the biggest movie of the summer that practically no one has seen. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra opens today, but Paramount Pictures didn’t screen the blockbuster for critics beforehand. Only a select few writers from blogs and movie Web sites have seen it for review — such as Harry Knowles, the self-professed “Head Geek” from Ain’t It Cool News — and their opinions have been mostly positive. Instead, the studio says it’s intentionally aiming the movie at the heartland, at cities and audiences outside the entertainment vortexes of New York and Los Angeles. Paramount held a screening last Friday for 1,000 military service members and their families at Andrews Air Force Base; it’s also focusing marketing efforts in places like Kansas City, Charlotte, N.C., and Columbus, Ohio. While appealing to a sense of patriotism nationwide, the plan also is inspired by the disparity that existed between the critical trashing Transformers: Rise of the Fallen received and the massive crowds it drew at the box office. “G.I. Joe is a big, fun, summer event movie — one that we’ve seen audiences enjoy everywhere from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to Phoenix, Ariz.,” said Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount Pictures. “After the chasm we experienced with Transformers 2 between the response of audiences and critics, we chose to forgo opening-day print and broadcast reviews as a strategy to promote G.I. Joe. We want audiences to define this film.” With a reported production budget of $175 million and a cast that includes Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Marlon Wayans and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, G.I. Joe follows the adventures of an elite team using high-tech spy and military equipment to take down a corrupt arms dealer. It comes from director Stephen Sommers, whose previous films include The Mummy and Van Helsing.

‘G.I. Joe’ marketing aimed at heartland Los Angeles Times HOLLYWOOD — G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is the last of Hollywood’s big summer popcorn movies. But you wouldn’t know it from the way Paramount Pictures is launching its nearly $180-million big-screen adaptation of the classic military action figures, comic books and TV cartoon series. Sure there was a pricey Super Bowl ad and other promotional reminders that typically accompany big event pictures, but there’s no glitzy Hollywood premiere and no major media junket at a luxury hotel. Paramount’s strategy to eschew such marketing conventions for the Friday release illustrates how, at a time when word of mouth can make or break a high-profile movie, studios will go to great lengths to avoid potential bad buzz and directly court the audiences most likely to embrace their film. For G.I. Joe, Paramount has concluded based on research that national media, affluent urban audiences and genre fans are unlikely to support the film. Instead, the studio is aggressively pursuing blue-collar moviegoers in smaller markets, especially those with military backgrounds. “Our starting point for this movie is not Hollywood and Manhattan but rather mid-America,” Paramount Vice Chairman Rob Moore said. The movie’s de facto U.S. premiere was last Friday at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, where hundreds of soldiers and their families joined director Stephen Sommers, stars Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller and Marlon Wayans, and Paramount executives on the red carpet.

The frenzy extends to a series of posters, video games, board games and other merchandise. n 1991: 12-inch G.I. Joe figures are reintroduced. n 2008: Paramount Pictures hires Stephen Sommers to direct an action movie based on G.I. Joe in what it hopes will be the first in a new franchise for the studio. n 2009: The movie, which has cost nearly $330 million to produce and market, debuts.
The studio has aimed its Red State-centric marketing campaign at some unconventional venues: a 30-second spot on video screens at Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s summer multi-city concert tour set to Kid Rock’s song “American Badass”; a 90-second clip that ran on the Country Music Television Awards in June; and extensive outdoor advertising in smaller markets. The studio also bought ads in local and national military newspapers and Web sites. But while Paramount is taking advantage of G.I. Joe’s military heritage, it is playing a careful balancing act to maintain
appeal overseas, which is critical to the success of a big budget film. In the 1980s, the “Joe” team worked for the U.S. government and the comic book, toy and cartoon tag line was “A Real American Hero.” In the movie, however it has been transformed into a global team of elite fighters based out of Egypt that travel to different parts of the world battling the evil Cobra organization, a fact that’s being emphasized in European advertisements. Much of the campaign in Asia highlights scenes with Korean born Byung-hun Lee, who plays the Cobra team’s martial arts expert.

A romantic vacation hiking the wilds of Hawaii is not in the cards for one couple in the somewhat engrossing thriller A Perfect Getaway. Since there are three couples on that trail, the trick to this not-as-tricky-as-you’d-hope mystery is figuring out which couples are potential victims and which are murderers. It has only one conventionally tricky way the mystery can resolve itself. That doesn’t mean the finale of this David Twohy (Pitch Black) film isn’t a lulu. Cliff and Cydney (Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich) are newlyweds spending their honeymoon trekking on Kauai. He’s fresh out of film school, a “screenplay writer” she crows. The people they meet aren’t exactly charming company. There’s the rough-hewn Kale and Cleo (Chris Hemsworth and Marley Shelton), scary

But Nick’s got a million stories about his violent “Special Forces” past, tips for Cliff’s script’s “second-act surprise” or “red snapper.” “Red herring,” Cliff corrects. “You’re a screenwriter, I’m a Jedi,” Nick cracks back. Olyphant (Hitman) is making a nice career for himself out of his spooky eyes and bad-guy vibe. He has lots of fun with Nick, all swagger and bluff, a regular “Man vs. Wild.” “He is really hard to kill,” drawls Gina at a death-defying
tale from Nick. But out there in the boondocks, word creeps in about murders in Honolulu, and Cliff and Cydney start to panic. Jovovich, who has morphed from skinny model into the resident butt-kicker of the Resident Evil movies, gives Cydney girlish touches, playing naive to the hilt. It’s too bad Twohy relied on that student screenwriter’s crutch — a screenwriter character in a movie about thriller cliches — and typed himself into a corner. The exotic setting and characters deserve more riveting situations than this imperfect Getaway gives them.

Lopez discovers that Ayers once attended Juilliard, and his resulting columns wind up taking the writer not only into the tortured history and mind of his subject, but also into the city’s Skid Row.

Streep is the Julia Child of ‘Julie & Julia’ news

NEW YORK — For Julie & Julia, Meryl Streep said, she based her portrayal of chef-de-TV Julia Child partly on her own mother, who had “an undeniable sense of joie de vivre” — and a tenuous relationship with the kitchen. “My mother’s motto was, ‘If it’s not done in 20 minutes, it’s not dinner.’” As a kid, Streep said, she once found herself watching the neighbors carving up what she thought were “tennis balls.” They were potatoes. “Those aren’t potatoes,” Streep recalled thinking. “Potatoes came in a box.” But such was the world to which the larger-than-life Julia Child brought her book and herself in the mid-1960s, the apron-clad universe of American “cuisine” that she led by the hand, from the woefulness of Irish spaghetti (pasta awash in Campbell’s tomato soup) to
the high-wire-and-wine adventures of boeuf Bourguignon. For New York women like Nora Ephron, Child’s book was the bible. “I had already done many, many of the recipes from Julia before she went on the air,” said Ephron. “The book came out in ’62 and she didn’t go on the air till about ’64, ’65. I, meanwhile, was slicing and dicing away, because that’s what you did in New York — you cooked from that cookbook. Or be ashamed of yourself. People were always saying things at dinner parties, ‘Is this Julia’s ... ?”’ This time around, Ephron — the writer-director of such frothy confections as Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail and Bewitched — has attempted the cinema version of lemon souffle, essentially two new movies under one title. Julie & Julia, which opens today, is based on My Life in France (by Child and her grandnephew Alex Prud’homme) and on author Julie Powell’s yearlong effort to cook — and
blog — her way through Child’s landmark Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Amy Adams portrays Powell; Chris Messina plays her husband, Eric; Stanley Tucci is Julia’s husband, Paul, and Streep — all 5 feet, 6 inches of her — plays Child, who was, oh, about 6-foot3. Given the demands of perspective and illusion, this height differential leads one to think of the casting call for Julie & Julia as a remake of Under the Rainbow. “It’s true, absolutely true,” said Ephron, admitting she had to hire every short actor in Hollywood (OK, an overstatement). “They weren’t midgets — that’s not fair. But it’s absolutely true. When we’d be on the street, Meryl would cast an eye on the tall extra and ask politely that they be put further away from her. And there’s no question that there were all kinds of wonderful actresses I ruled out for Louisette and Simca” — two of Child’s Paris friends — “because they were tall.”
Few women come as tall as Child, who wasn’t just physically imposing: She was a pioneer, in both the kitchen and the battle of the sexes. Though hardly a feminist firebrand, Child was a vessel of passion. It might have been a passion for food, rather than conflict, that made her who she was. But she was, without a doubt, a role model for women, and cooks of both sexes: Julie Powell’s herculean effort to complete 524 recipes in 365 days was as much about the inspiration she got from Child as it was her own tenacity. When asked, Adams said she hadn’t met Powell (“We met through her blog,” she offered), adding that her version of her character was approached through Ephron’s words. Child, of course, is another story. “Everybody can do their own version of Julia Child,” said Streep — who, as soon as she opens her mouth in the movie, cues our mental theme music to The French Chef. Julie & Julia is a gloriously frothy confection, a late summer delight built on Meryl Streep’s hilarious impersonation of “The French Chef,” Julia Child. The comedy about a would-be writer’s attempt to cook her way through Child’s culture-changing cookbook sees Nora Ephron return to her Sleepless in Seattle form. She combined Julie Powell’s book on her quest to “be like Julia” and Child’s own memoir of her years in France to create a movie that engages every time it focuses on Julie (Amy Adams, sweet as ever) in her Queens, N.Y. kitchen, and tickles every moment it flashes back to Julia’s struggles to learn French, learn French cuisine and write the cookbook that taught America “Bon appetit!” Julie was living in quiet desperation, with a thankless job dealing with irate, grieving New Yorkers over plans to replace The World Trade Center. But she liked to cook. Her husband (Chris Messina, solid support) suggests a blog. And Julie comes up with a task, the chance “to finally finish something” in her life. She will follow the 524 recipes in Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking, cook them all within a year, and blog about it. As Julie goes through this culinary metamorphosis we skip back to the late 1940s, when newlywed Julia Child (Stanley Tucci is spot-on perfect as her droll husband, Paul) moved to Paris and found her life’s calling. The tall, loud woman with the silly, fluty voice, boundless enthusiasm and adorably self-deprecating wit comes back to life in Streep’s hands. Virtually every time she opens her mouth as “Joooooolia” she lands a laugh. Streep even plays “tall,” a neat trick. Through her performance we realize, as Julie did, the truth in her husband’s don’t-be-intimidated-bythe-great-cook pep talk. “Julia Child wasn’t always Julia Child.” Another coup — landing the towering comedienne Jane Lynch (Role Models) as Julia’s sister. She holds her own with Streep and then some. Every bit of casting works so well that even slower moments sing.

But in addition to her mother, Streep said, her Julia was based partly on Powell’s elevated image of the older woman. One truly angelic thing in Julie & Julia is Paul Child, who, as played by Tucci, is that rare thing in a modern story — a selfless, supportive husband, in this case one born considerably before such qualities were even considered, much less considered assets. He’s positively ... “Nice?” Ephron said. “I know, yes, I know. Well, I know nice men. But that was a true thing for both of those women, that both Eric and Paul were nice. I didn’t have to change either of those guys, they were fantastically nice guys. You don’t think there were nice men in the 1950s?” The ’50s, yes; ’50s movies, not so much. Tucci and Streep shared the screen in The Devil Wears Prada, and when asked what it’s like being in another “chick flick” with the actress, Tucci laughed out loud. “I gotta say, a lot of guys come up and say, ‘Oh my God, I loved that movie. I crossed some threshold. But this is different. I felt like I was making this little, intimate movie about two people, and it was very comfortable, you never felt anyone was working at cross-purposes. And Nora knew how to tell both stories truthfully. And besides, everybody loves food. People are going to go to the movie because they love food. And they love to see people eat.”

But Futurama was always better. The show about a 31st-century space delivery crew could hit all the humor notes Family Guy could, but also had some heart and emotion. Although sitcoms are there to make us laugh, a little emotion and range always comes in handy, if only to make the laughs that much funnier. The edge Futurama had was that it came from an angle that was new and not as explored as Family Guy, which is about a family. Futurama is a workbased sitcom as much as it is a sci-fi one, whereas the family cartoon was mastered by The Simpsons. Indeed, one of the harshest criticisms of Family Guy is that it’s just The Simpsons with a different color palette. The work-based sitcom gave Futurama material even The Simpsons never really touched. About all Homer ever does at work is sleep, eat donuts and avert disasters he’s created. And he’s the only one with a job. Futurama explored how friendly co-workers can
evolve into true friends or significant others and how those friendships can hurt or help the workplace. Among my favorite Futurama episodes is “A Flight to Remember,” where the crew goes on a spaceship version of the Titanic. A fake love triangle is quickly formed as two women, Leela and Amy, need their bachelor friend, Fry, to pretend to be their boyfriend. Fry obliges, more with Amy, who needs his help more. Afterward, a slightly miffed Leela and Fry chat about what a cute couple Fry and Amy would make. Fry pooh-poohs the notion, saying he “takes my fake relationship with (Leela) way more seriously,” as Leela is the girl Fry loves. The idea of a fake relationship is funny in of itself, but there’s just enough sweetness to make the moment romantic, even if they are on a doomed boat. Such versatility is common on Futurama and rare on Family Guy. The Simpsons had it, though most of those
moments ended up being about the love of parents and children for each other, or of a beleaguered husband and wife remembering why they fell in love. Sadly, Futurama lasted four seasons (with a fifth 16-episode ‘season’ made up of four-episode movies that loosely tied in to each other) before people decided it wasn’t The Simpsons, even though the similarities are obvious, even though they share a creator (Matt Groening). With the cast back and the right format being used, here’s hoping that Futurama reminds people of its brilliance and takes its place as the animated sitcom people first think of when discussing the 2000s. New Sony e-book reader $100 cheaper than Kindle By RACHEL METZ Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO — Electronic books are often mentioned in the same breath as Amazon.com Inc.’s Kindle digital reader. Now e-book rival Sony Corp. is determined to recapture consumers’ attention with a smaller reader that’s also $100 cheaper. On Wednesday, Sony is expected to announce that it will release the Reader Pocket Edition by the end of August. Like the Kindle and Sony’s previous Readers, the Pocket Edition will come with an “electronic ink” display, which shows dark gray text on a lighter gray background. As the word “pocket” implies, its five-inch screen will be smaller than that on the Kindle and other Sony models. Unlike other Readers, the Pocket Edition won’t play digital music files, and it won’t have a slot for a memory card to supplement internal storage that can hold 350 books. It will retail for $199, a third off the price of the basic Kindle model and about $80 less than Sony’s PRS-505 reader,
which will be discontinued. Color choices include blue, red and silver. The device is entering a small but growing market. U.S. e-book sales totaled $113 million last year — up 68 percent from 2007 but still a fraction of the estimated $24.3 billion spent on all books, according to the Association of American Publishers. Steve Haber, president of Sony’s Digital Reading Business Division, expects the Pocket Edition’s price tag will lure new consumers who haven’t wanted to shell out for such a device thus far. And he’s not worried that the Pocket Edition’s chances for success will be diminished by the rising popularity of reading e-books on smart phones like the iPhone and BlackBerrys. “Once you see it, it’s been a consistent response of, ‘That’s cool,”’ he said. Sarah Rotman Epps, a media analyst at Forrester Research, said the Pocket Edition’s price below $200 breaks an important psychological barrier. “This is something that is
affordable for the holiday season, and I think that you’ll see sales of e-readers outpacing current forecasts,” she said. Her current forecast calls for sales of 2 million digital reading devices this year; she said a little more than 1 million were sold by the end of 2008. She doesn’t expect Amazon to rest on its laurels, adding that the online retailer will have to respond to counter Sony’s new price point. Sony is also announcing
on Wednesday the release of a $299 touch-screen model to replace its existing $350 touch-screen PRS-700. The Touch Edition will have the same six-inch screen as its predecessor but not the PRS700’s built-in light. Haber said removing the light will correct some screen clarity problems it has caused. With the PRS-700, users can highlight text and take notes with a touch-screen keyboard. On the new model, users also can write notes with a finger or a stylus that is included. The new model has a builtin dictionary and is faster at changing pages when readers swipe a finger across the screen. It will sell in red, silver or black and can hold 350 books in its built-in memory or more on a memory card. A big difference between Sony’s Readers and Amazon’s Kindle has always been the lack of wireless access for quick and simple downloads of books. The new models are no different: They have to be connected to a computer to acquire books. For the first time, they will
be compatible with PCs and Mac computers, though. Sony will offer current Reader owners a software update to make theirs compatible with both. As he has indicated in the past, Haber said Sony is working on a wireless model, though he wouldn’t say when. Sony also is adjusting prices to some of the e-books it sells through its online eBook Store. New releases and bestsellers will now sell for $10, $2 less than current prices. Amazon’s Kindle Store offers most best-sellers and new releases for $10. Sony’s eBook Store includes more than 100,000 books, as well as a million free public-domain books available from Google Inc. through its Google Books project. The Kindle Store currently has more than 330,000 available titles. The Kindle can only download books from Amazon’s store, while Sony’s Readers can display texts sold in the “epub” format — an open standard supported by the International Digital Publishing Forum that numerous publishers use to make e-books.

When Fox agreed to bring back the original cast for the second revival of Futurama, it gave the show a chance to lay claim to a title it rightly deserves: Best animated sitcom of the 2000s. The Simpsons is unequivocally the cartoon of the ’90s, but John there are plenty Dietrich of shows that Pushing Buttons could fight for the title in the 2000s. Sadly, the best of them, Futurama, was so poorly handled that it never really stood a chance. If you took a poll of cartoon viewers or mainstream fans, Family Guy would probably lay claim to the title for the 2000s. It’s by far the most populated animated show, and pulled off the feat of being resurrected after cancellation, proving its popularity.

LOS ANGELES — If Paula Abdul’s abrupt Twitter announcement that she’s quitting American Idol is a contract negotiating ploy, it’s a spectacular one. If not, she’s potentially blown a hole in TV’s top-rated show — and rejected an eight-figure deal that represented a 30 percent raise, according to a person familiar with the talks. The person, lacking authority to speak publicly, asked not to be identified. Abdul dropped her online bombshell Tuesday evening, right before season-nine auditions begin today in Denver. That has the whiff of a pressure tactic on Abdul’s part, although boycotting the early auditions that skip from city to city might have been a less dramatic way to negotiate. Her tweets, however, seemed to have an air of finality. “With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return” to Fox’s singing contest, Abdul said on her Twitter account. “I’ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day one become an international phenomenon.” There was a sense of closure, too, in a statement from Fox and producers FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment. The companies said Abdul was “an important part of the American Idol family over the last eight seasons and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show.” They said she was “a tremendous talent” and wished her the best.
Abdul’s banter and bickering with acerbic fellow judge Simon Cowell was as regular an Idol fixture as off-key contestants. So was her shimmying behind the judges’ table when contestants sang uptempo songs. Earlier this year, Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly called Abdul “an integral part of the show.” Her announcement came the day Fox after said that Kara DioGuardi would return for a second season on the American Idol judging panel. The addition of Grammy-nominated songwriter DioGuardi last year raised questions about Abdul’s future on the show, which was based on the British series Pop Idol. Cowell, DioGuardi and Randy Jackson are signed through season nine. Ryan Seacrest just agreed to a new deal, reportedly worth $45 million, that keeps him on as Idol host through 2012 and provides the opportunity for new entertainment ventures. Despite a decline in its ratings, American Idol remains the No. 1-rated show and a money machine for Fox, its producers and for the record labels and singers like Carrie Underwood that have benefited from its star-making power. Removing any part of a familiar and winning TV formula can be risky and makes the show’s future an open question. In July, Abdul told The Associated Press that she had been invited to stay with Idol as long as the show lasted and that she was optimistic that she’d be able to negotiate a new contract. But the 47-year-old singer-dancer said the invitation to come back was subject to agreement on the details of a new deal.

Rivers: It’s about how people in this day and age with a good idea and a lot of work can still have the American dream. We show how they spend their money and some crazy ways they’ve made it. It’s a lot of fun. AP: Is there a secret to success? Rivers: It’s having an idea that you totally believe in and then working at it. Not one person that we interviewed did not have a great work ethic. These people don’t say, “Boohoo, poor me, it’s a recession and I can’t do it.” Absolutely not. AP: You’re also about to be roasted on Comedy Central. Rivers: Kathy Griffin is the roast mistress, and we’re very good friends. Some of the roasters will be Robin Quivers from Howard Stern, Lily Tomlin, Carl Reiner and Brad Garrett. These are not typical roasters. AP: Will you have a thick skin for what they say about you? Rivers: Yes, I say, “Enjoy yourselves,” because when I turn around and give it back to them, I’m going to give it back both barrels.

HOLLYWOOD — With longtime afternoon staple Guiding Light set to go dark, CBS is hoping to make a new deal with daytime viewers this fall by reviving an old favorite — Let’s Make a Deal. The daily one-hour game show on which contestants in kooky costumes trade for hidden prizes is presumably the network’s replacement for its veteran soap opera, which is being pulled off the air after more than a half century because of declining ratings. Network executives are scheduled to make a formal announcement Monday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Pasadena. Let’s Make a Deal’s original host, Monty Hall, the person most associated with the show’s success since its debut on NBC in December 1963, will be there to hand over the hosting torch to entertainer Wayne Brady. CBS is banking on the show’s nostalgic value to attract viewers. But of even greater importance is the bottom line. The show will cost much less to produce than a soap opera, for which producers and writers turn out five hour-long episodes a week for an ensemble of performers.
