BRIEFLY ENTERTAINING JSU announces a call for entries for fiber arts show

TV’s ‘Guiding Light’ shoots final scenes in New Jersey PEAPACK-GLADSTONE, N.J. — The cast and crew of Guiding Light, TV’s longest-running soap opera, have finished shooting their final scenes in a northern New Jersey town. Afterward, they gathered at Peapack Reformed Church for a service to remember the show. The church has served as the site for weddings and funerals in Guiding Light’s fictional town of Springfield. The Rev. Kathryn Henry recalled that the show’s title referred to a lamp put in a church window by the fictional Rev. Rutledge to welcome parishioners seeking guidance. CBS has canceled the program after a 72-year run that predates television. Guiding Light will air its last episode on Sept. 18. JHS student to give piano recital “Music is a prophecy of what life is to be; the rainbow of promise translated out of seeing into hearing.” — Lydia M. Child Lauren Ingram’s piano recital this Sunday may well reflect a prediction of a life filled with music. Susie Francis Dempsey, her piano teacher, says piano music has been a priority in Ingram’s busy schedule for the last 12 years, from her early elementary school years as a student of Margaret Smoake, and into high school, where she has participated in piano and band music. After graduation from Jacksonville High School, the student plans to go to attend the University of Alabama where she will Hervey major in English and music. Folsom The recital will be held at the Artists in Action First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville at 3 p.m. The pieces she will play represent a variety of styles and works that include celebrated Italian composer Muzio Clementi, J.S. Bach, Ludwig Beethoven and Claude Debussy. Clementi is known for composing the first sonata written for the piano, and the Impressionist Selim Palmgren, another composer from which she will play, helped establish the nationalist movement in Finnish music. These are just some of the interesting facts Ingram will include in her program notes, which she has written herself and will share with the audience. Two women composers, distinctly different in background, are also on the program, giving Ingram’s challenging fingerwork more variety. “Smoky Topaz Rag” was written by Grace Bolen and “Elergy” is by Cecile Chaminade. Her contemporary piece will be “Theme from Beauty and the Beast.” “We will be hearing the work of a student who has steadily progressed from the time I have known her,” Dempsey said. “She’s learned to express herself and listen more intently to her own playing, which must happen for a student to become truly musical.” Ingram has taken up selections she has played in the past, Dempsey added, and performs them now with more maturity in phrasing with line and melody. And her foundation in piano provided the basis for her confidence in playing band instruments, Dempsey said. Although she’s very busy with church and school activities, Ingram makes time for music. She has been recognized at the state level seven times by the Alabama Music Teachers Association for her performances at auditions.

Special to The Star

Jacksonville High School student Lauren Ingram is giving a piano recital Sunday at the First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville. She is active in the drama team, which performs a play each Christmas, and youth praise band at First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville and is in both the JHS Marching Band and Jazz Bands playing mallets and piano respectively. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and Who’s Who Among American High School students. Ingram also plays on the JHS tennis team. “She has numerous projects, but she always rises to the top,” Dempsey commented. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Russell Ingram of Jacksonville. The public is invited to the recital.

Brooks & Dunn: Out of new ideas after 20 years By JOHN GEROME Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Brooks & Dunn decided to call it quits after they realized they’d begun to run out of ideas after 20 years of making hit country music together. Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn talked about their parting Wednesday during a taping of Country Music Television’s Invitation Only show, which will air Oct. 30. They announced this week that they plan to release an album of greatest hits that will include a few new songs next

month then tour one last time in 2010 before parting. With Dunn sitting beside him, Brooks told a questioner in the audience that while working on the new album, they looked at each other and said, “You know what? I think we’ve just kind of exhausted it.” “We’ve managed year after year to come up with material for albums, gear up for another tour, ideas and all these things,” Brooks said. “We’ve explored everything we could think of musically.” Brooks, 54, said he and Dunn, 56, remain good friends and have never

had a “good fight” or even yelled at each other. Dunn said the duo began as a “contrived act” in 1990, with the two “thrown together” by their record label. They began as co-workers “then ended up more like brothers than anything,” he said. Their many hits include “Boot Scootin’ Boogie,” “My Maria,” “Red Dirt Road” and “Cowgirls Don’t Cry” with Reba McEntire. They’ve sold more than 30 million albums and had 23 No. 1 hits, according to their label, Arista Nashville.

★ Guitar legend-inventor Les Paul dies at age 94

www.bamaescapes.com

By LUKE SHERIDAN WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Les Paul, who invented the solid-body electric guitar later wielded by a legion of rock ’n’ roll greats, died Thursday of complications from pneumonia. He was 94. According to Gibson Guitar, Paul died at White Plains Hospital. His family and friends were by his side. As an inventor, Paul also helped bring about the rise of rock ’n’ roll with multitrack recording, which enables artists to record different instruments at different times, sing harmony with themselves, and then carefully balance the tracks in the finished recording. The use of electric guitar gained popularity in the mid-to-late 1940s, and then exploded with the advent of rock in the mid-’50s. “Suddenly, it was recognized that power was a very important part of music,” Paul once said. “To have the dynamics, to have the way of expressing yourself beyond the normal limits of an unamplified instrument, was incredible. Today a guy wouldn’t think of singing a song on a stage without a microphone and a sound system.” “Without Les Paul, we would not have rock and roll as we know it,” said Terry Stewart, president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. “His inventions created the infrastructure for the music and his playing style will ripple through generations.” A tinkerer and musician since childhood, he experimented with guitar amplification for years before coming up in 1941 with what he called “The Log,” a four-by-four piece of wood strung with steel strings. “I went into a nightclub and played it. Of course, everybody had me labeled as a nut.” He later put the wooden wings onto the body to give it a traditional guitar shape. In 1952, Gibson Guitars began production on the Les Paul guitar. Pete Townshend of the Who, Steve Howe of Yes, jazz great Al DiMeola and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page all made the Gibson Les Paul their trademark. Over the years, the Les Paul series has become one of the most widely used guitars in the music industry. In 2005, Christie’s auction house sold a 1955 Gibson Les Paul for $45,600. In the late 1960s, Paul retired from music to concentrate on his inventions. His interest in country music was rekindled in the mid-’70s and he teamed up with Chet Atkins for two albums. The duo were awarded a Grammy for best country instrumental performance of

1976 for their Chester and Lester album. With Mary Ford, his wife from 1949 to 1962, he earned 36 gold records for hits including “Vaya Con Dios” and “How High the Moon,” which both hit No. 1. Many of their songs used overdubbing techniques that Paul had helped develop. “I could take my Mary and make her three, six, nine, 12, as many voices as I wished,” he recalled. “This is quite an asset.” The overdubbing technique was highly influential on later recording artists such as the Carpenters. Released in 2005, Les Paul & Friends: American Made, World Played was his first album of new material since those 1970s recordings. Among those playing with him: Peter Frampton, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Richie Sambora. “They’re not only my friends, but they’re great players,” Paul told The Associated Press. “I never stop being amazed by all the different ways of playing the guitar and making it deliver a message.” Two cuts from the album won Grammys, “Caravan” for best pop instrumental performance and “69 Freedom Special” for best rock instrumental performance. (He had also been awarded a technical Grammy in 2001.) Paul was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2005. Paul was born Lester William Polfuss, in Waukesha, Wis., on June 9, 1915. He began his career as a musician, billing himself as Red Hot Red or Rhubarb Red. He toured with the popular Chicago band Rube Tronson and His Texas Cowboys and led the house band on WJJD radio in Chicago. In the mid-1930s he joined Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians and soon moved to New York to form the Les Paul Trio, with Jim Atkins and bassist Ernie Newton. Meanwhile, he had made his first attempt at audio amplification at age 13. Unhappy with the amount of volume produced by his acoustic guitar, Paul tried placing a telephone receiver under the strings. Although this worked to some extent, only two strings were amplified and the volume level was still too low. By placing a phonograph needle in the guitar, all six strings were amplified, which proved to be much louder. Paul was playing a working prototype of the electric guitar in 1929. His work on taping techniques began in the years after World War II, when Bing Crosby gave him a tape recorder. Drawing on his earlier experimentation with his homemade record-

cutting machines, Paul added an additional playback head to the recorder. The result was a delayed effect that became known as tape echo. Tape echo gave the recording a more “live” feel and enabled the user to simulate different playing environments. Paul’s next “crazy idea” was to stack together eight mono tape machines and send their outputs to one piece of tape, stacking the recording heads on top of each other. The resulting machine served as the forerunner to today’s multitrack recorders. In 1954, Paul commissioned Ampex to build the first eight-track tape recorder, later known as “Sel-Sync,” in which a recording head could simultaneously record a new track and play back previous ones. He had met Ford, then known as Colleen Summers, in the 1940s while working as a studio musician in Los Angeles. For seven years in the 1950s, Paul and Ford broadcast a TV show from their home in Mahwah, N.J. Ford died in 1977, 15 years after they divorced. In recent years, Paul played Monday nights at New York night spots. Such stars as Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, Dire Straits’ Mark Knopfler, Bruce Springsteen and Eddie Van Halen came to pay tribute and sit in with him. “It’s where we were the happiest, in a ‘joint,”’ he said in a 2000 interview with the AP. “It was not being on top. The fun was getting there, not staying there — that’s hard work.”

40 years later, Woodstock still fascinates Music

By MICHAEL HILL Associated Press

BETHEL, N.Y. — Forty years after Richie Havens sang and strummed for a sea of people at Woodstock, he still gets asked about it and he still gets requests to sing “Freedom.” He’s not surprised. “Everything in my life, and so many others’, is attached to that train,” Havens said. The young hippies who watched the sun come up with The Who in 1969 are now eligible for early bird specials. Many of the bands are broken up or missing members who died. But Woodstock remains one of those events — like the moon landing earlier that summer — that continues to define the 1960s in the popular imagination. Consider the bumper crop of Woodstock nostalgia marking the 40th anniversary. There’s a new director’s cut DVD of the concert movie, a remastered concert CD, director Ang Lee’s rock ’n’ roll comedy Taking Woodstock and a memoir by promoter Michael Lang. There are also performances scheduled by Woodstock veterans at the old site, now home to a ’60s museum and an outdoor concert pavilion. The Woodstock legend stems from big names such as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin playing at a show where everything went wrong but

Lang settled on a hay field in Bethel owned by a kindly dairy farmer named Max Yasgur. The concert did come off Aug. 15-18, 1969, but barely. Fences were torn down, tickets became useless. More than 400,000 people converged on this rural corner 80 miles northwest of New York City, freezing traffic for

woodstock remembered at 40 Can’t get enough of Woodstock? There are plenty of new or remastered products out this year that give a flavor of the 40-year-old concert. miles. Then the rains doused everything. It should have been a disaster. But Americans tuning in to the evening news that weekend saw smiling, dancing, muddy kids. By the time the concert movie came out months later, Woodstock was a symbol of the happy, hippie side of the ’60s spirit. It still is. Baby boomers are the “Woodstock Generation” — not the “Monterey Generation” or the “Altamont Generation.” Bethel’s onsite museum has logged more than 70,000 visitors since last summer, a fair number of them college students born well after Woodstock. A roadside monument there regularly logs visitors from around the planet. “It’s almost a pilgrimage,” said Wade Lawrence, director of the Museum at Bethel Woods. “It’s like going to a high school reunion, or it’s like visiting a grave site of a loved one.” From Lollapalooza to All Points West, there have been plenty of big festivals focused on youth culture. The continent-hopping Live Aid shows of 1985 did that and more, enlisting

top names such as U2 and Madonna to fight hunger in Africa. None have the cultural cachet of Woodstock. Who would ever ask a Generation X-er: “Were you really at Live Aid?” People who went to Woodstock say the crowd set it apart as much as the music. The trippy anarchy of Woodstock has become legend: lots of nudity, casual sex, dirty (and muddy) dancing, open drug use. The stage announcer famously warned people to steer clear of the brown acid. Many who were there recall Woodstock as an oasis of good vibes during a time of unrest over the Vietnam War. Ilene Marder, then an 18-year-old who hitched from the Bronx, saw people feeding one another and respecting one another. She knew she found her tribe. “The music was nice, but it was being with so many people who looked like us, who looked like me,” said Marder,

who later moved to Woodstock some 50 miles away. Former Grateful Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten remembers hearing buzz that something special was up at the nearby hotel where the band was staying. The scale of the event sunk in when the band choppered in over the mass of people. While artists like Joe Cocker and Santana boosted their careers at Woodstock, the Dead were notoriously flat. Jerry Garcia, the band’s late guitarist, told interviewers that his guitar was being hit with bouncing blue balls of electricity — the kind that comes from bad wiring, not strong psychedelics. Constanten said he wasn’t as bothered as his band mates. “Actually, I had a wonderful time. The guitarists were not. Because of electrical problems, they were getting shocks from their strings and all,” he said. “Aversion therapy like that, no one needs.”

Strait’s take on “El Rey,” the legendary ranchera penned by Jose Alfredo Jimenez and popularized by Vicente Fernandez. Not only does the Texan roll his Rs, but he manages to inject the unbridled potency necessary to convincingly sing a ranchera — in Spanish, to boot. Elsewhere, Twang goes from roadhouse rave-ups (Delbert McClinton’s “Same Kind of Crazy”) to stately country ballads (”Beautiful Day for Goodbye”). After nearly three decades of influential country music, Strait has nothing to prove. How cool that Twang sounds as if he does. — Mario Tarradell, The Dallas Morning News

Ian Hunter excels in his golden years Ian Hunter Man Overboard

Ian Hunter is not merely “still active” at age 70 — the old dude is excelling. In October, the raspy-voiced songwriter extraordinaire will finally front a temporarily reunited Mott the Hoople as the influential if underrated British glam band celebrates its 40th anniversary onstage in London. Meanwhile, the iconic shades-sporting rock-and-roll lifer just furthered his solo legacy — begun when Mott splintered in 1974 and Hunter subsequently emigrated to America — with his third strong studio album of this decade. Man Overboard, like 2001’s Rant and 2007’s Shrunken Heads, showcases Hunter’s enduring ability to marry Dylanesque lyrical detail with laddish bluesrock panache and wry, folkish balladry. Maximizing his most recent hot songwriting streak, it was recorded quickly late last year with Hunter on acoustic guitar, piano, and harmonica, fleshed out by his tour-tightened band. The 11 tracks vary from mellower tunes to evocative rockers like the swelling, Celtic-flavored “The Great Escape” and disdainful “Babylon Blues.” Besides his pen, Hunter’s best instrument remains his voice, at once bruised with world-weariness and brimming with matey brio, able to convey tart

observation or existentialist heartache, as on the ruefully obsessive “Arms & Legs” or the seaand-drinksodden title track. —David R. Stampone, MCT

Dinosaur Jr. Farm

This, the ninth studio release from American trio Dinosaur Jr., provides a reverb-laden soundtrack recalling the heydays of summer, with all of the grass stains, sunburns, and pubescent rites of passage therein implied. Sloppy, wailing guitar crescendos and cavalier front man J Mascis’ groaning, barely melodic vocals anchor Farm to the band’s reliably off-kilter brand of garage rock. At any other time of year, Farm might have risked sounding recycled, but with just four weeks until school starts, the album’s slacker rebelliousness is both all too relatable and too good to resist. —Nayeli Rodriguez, MCT

Tisdale, Lovato aim for older crowd Ashley Tisdale Guilty Pleasures Demi Lovato Here We Go Again

Television host Art Linkletter used to tell audiences that “kids say the darndest things.” At present, kids hardly have anything darned or interesting to talk or sing about — at least, not if we must judge from the sound of tween fan faves Demi Lovato and Ashley Tisdale. Tisdale, 24, may be the least adored of the High School Musical crew. Sob. Still, that doesn’t mean she’s not vying for popularity — she’s just aiming for a slightly older crowd. With un-bubblegum production values and a growl to her voice, Tisdale unleashes her inner Kelly Clarkson on the stadium-rocky role-playing “Masquerade.” The

gutsiness is cute. But she muffs it all up by blaming her folks for relationship woes on the balladlike “How Do You Love Someone.” I’ll show you trouble, young lady: You’re grounded. At 16, Lovato — star of Disney Channel stuff Camp Rock and Sonny With a Chance — has, surprisingly, a better grasp on adulthood than does Tisdale. Yet the cooing Lovato still acts her age. In tunes such as “Solo” and “Remember December,” she retains the fab-u-lash hooks found in the crisp, frisky powerpop of her debut album, 2008’s Don’t Forget. Yet she manages to make overly sensitive cowriters like John Mayer and Jon McLaughlin sound younger than they have in their entire careers. Gold stars all around. —A.D. Amorosi, MCT

Anjulie’s debut is top-notch Anjulie Anjulie

Listening to Anjulie’s selftitled debut CD is like hearing a nice blend of Nelly Furtado and Corinne Bailey Rae, vocally speaking. But what makes this newcomer’s album so impressive is the lyrical content. “He got a knife in my back, stop turning please,” she pleads on “The Rain.” “Sometimes I lock myself inside your closet, breathe in the scent of your clothes,” she sings on the exceptionally smooth (and appropriately titled) “Crazy That Way.” The Canadian pop singer, whose parents migrated from Guyana, is mostly singing love songs — but not typical ones. “Keep your clothes off, I’m not rushing out like some dumb girl,” she commands on the infidelity tune, “Some Dumb Girl.” Other top tracks include the

beat-driven “The Heat,” the suave “Colombia” and the mysteriously gloomy first single, “Boom.” Anjulie, who wrote or co-wrote each song, closes the CD with “Day Will Soon Come,” where the anxious singer lets you know she’ll become a big star. After listening to this topnotch debut, she sure deserves to become one. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: On “Addicted2Me” Anjulie’s voice is definitely addictive with its winning bridge, “Nobody’s got a love like mine.” — Mesfin Fekadu, Associated Press

Music Reviews

On his 26th studio album, country music king George Strait could have delivered another one of his classy, authentic and predictable batch of songs. Nobody would have complained, because Strait on auto-pilot is better than just about any freshly scrubbed pop singer posing as a country crooner. But Twang ably presents a veteran artist willing to shake himself out of complacency. For starters, the disc includes three tunes Strait co-wrote, his first songwriting credits since 1982. All three are penned with his son, George “Bubba” Strait Jr. They include the elegant single, “Living for the Night,” and the two-stepper, “He’s Got That Something Special.” “Arkansas Dave,” a galloping story song crafted by Strait Jr., sounds like something Johnny Cash would have written, with its tale of murder and thievery. By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press

So let’s try to get this straight, here. Eric Bana plays a guy named Henry who can travel through time, only he can’t control where or when he goes. He also can’t control how he gets back, except for when he tries certain tricks to place himself in a state of mind to time travel. Even then there’s no way to guarantee which version of Henry will show up: the same one who left or a younger or older version of himself. The only constant seems to be that when he shows up at his destination, he’s always naked. (Somehow, Henry has found time between all his travels to hit the gym.)

Hunky as he is, he’d be a frustrating guy to fall in love with, or even date. But Rachel McAdams’ character, Clare, must be made of stronger stuff than the rest of us, because not only does she tolerate Henry’s pesky inconsistency, she believes he’s her destiny, and that he has been since the first time she saw him as a precocious 6-year-old girl. Director Robert Schwentke’s film, based on the Audrey Niffenegger best-seller, breezes over the fact that Clare and Henry’s meet-cute is more like a meet-creepy. He doesn’t freak her out at all, presumably because she knows, even at this tender age, that she is cosmically meant to be with this much-older man. Maybe it’s more plausible on the written page — or maybe you just have to be a hopeless romantic, and willing to shut off the part of your brain that craves logic, to enjoy this. But strangely, in the script from Bruce Joel Rubin (an Oscar winner for Ghost), the time-travel gimmick supersedes any sort of substance, depth or character development.

‘Bandslam’ your average high school movie BANDSLAM H H H Rating: PG for some thematic elements and mild language Running time: 1:51 STARRING: Gaelan Connell, Lisa Kudrow, Alyson Michalka, Vanessa Hudgens, Scott Porter

By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

Bandslam, Summit Entertainment’s High School Musical/Camp Rock clone, is a movie about music and high school and guilt and fitting in. It’s surpris-

ingly not awful for something this over-familiar. Gaelan Connell stars as Will, a dweeb who is so into music that he narrates our tale through a series of unanswered fan letters to David Bowie. He’s living a classic rock lyric; he’s “become comfortably numb.” “If you miss out on life, they win,” Mom (Lisa Kudrow) says of the kids who pick on Will. So she moves them to New Jersey. That’s where Will befriends Sa5m, the hip Goth chick (Vanessa Hudgens of HSM) who shares

a class assignment with him. But he lets his head be turned by the pushy Charlotte (Alyson Michalka of Phil of the Future). She has a band. They need a manager, a guy with an ear. Bandslam tracks our ensemble as Will bends the band’s classic rock bent more toward his ska tastes. There’s no edge, but if you’re young enough to not know the original version of “I Want You To Want Me,” Bandslam may have charms enough to tickle your tweenage heart.

The newcomers are, in a word, gross. They showed up, a million of them, on South Africa’s doorstep 20 years ago. And they won’t go home. They steal. They’re violent. They breed like insects. They have vile dietary needs. And after two decades in a vast walled-in shantytown, the government and “the people” have had enough. They’re to be forcibly evicted by “contractors” — 1.8 million “prawns” sent to a concentration camp. Nobody seems to mind. When you’re grotesque creatures the locals have charitably nicknamed prawns, the “Humans Only” signs, the restrictions on movement, breeding and land ownership are the best you can expect in District 9, a splatter-happy sci-fi film that slides a sociology lesson in between the exploding heads. Johannesburg native Neill Blomkamp’s film (he wrote and directed it) is equal parts Independence Day and Alien Nation, with a dollop of Blair Witch shaky-cam and Robocop gunplay tossed in for good measure. But what it really aspires to is to be a sci-fi Black Like Me. Only when Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley), the officious, sweater-vested bureaucrat in charge of the “evictions,” becomes hunted like the aliens can he feel their pain. Blomkamp tells this story as a documentary flashback, experts “remembering” events mixed in with TV news segments, footage from a Wikus-at-work documentary and surveillance video. The point of view isn’t consistent but the camcorder stuff gives District 9 immediacy. We see Wikus lead his team into the shantytown and see what causes him to slowly develop sympathy for aliens who look like shrimp clad in illfitting human rags. Corporate skulduggery, medical experiments and trigger-happy mercenaries (led by David James, scary) conspire to open Wikus’ eyes to the inhumanity of this situation — even if the creatures they’re dealing with aren’t human. The movie settles too comfortably into a bloodbath last act, but Blomkamp nicely pulls the trigger on the big action beats even as he ratchets up the tension. Amazingly, he manages to make these squishy beasties sympathetic — eventually. As allegory, District 9 isn’t all that, despite the racist parallels and the natural advantage of being set in South Africa. But as straight sci-fi action, it packs a punch, once you get past the ick factor.

By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Enduring the soulsucking process of buying a used car is bad enough. Watching a movie about soulless used-car salesmen is even worse — especially when it’s a comedy that strains desperately for raunchy, politically incorrect laughs. In theory, the pieces were there for something slightly more inspired with The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard. Chappelle’s Show co-creator Neal Brennan directs for the first time (from a script by Andy Stock and Rick Stempson.) A lot of improv supposedly went on, as well, as you might expect in a movie from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Gary Sanchez Productions. After all, these are the people behind Anchorman and Talladega Nights. But this time, except for a couple of amusing lines here and there, the results just feel flat and generally unpleasant. Every character is singularly unlikable, but beyond that, they’re drawn so one-dimensionally that they’re not even interesting.

Piven, as hotshot used-car salesman Don “The Goods” Ready, is essentially doing a variation on his cocky, fast-talking Ari Gold character from Entourage — which is pretty much all we’ve seen him do for years now. Don is the leader of a brash crew of mercenaries (played by Koechner, Rhames and Kathryn Hahn) who are hired to travel from town to town, moving cars off flailing lots. Their latest stop is Temecula in Southern California, where they have to help sell 141 cars over the three-day July 4 weekend. And so what we have here is essentially a remake of the 1980 Robert Zemeckis comedy Used Cars, complete with wild gimmicks and even strippers who are brought in to help move those vehicles. A gag involving getting American Idol runner-up Bo Bice’s brother to play during the sale gets hammered into the ground. So do racial and gay jokes. It’s just repetitive, adolescent and lame. Speaking of which, the whole point of Rob Riggle’s character is downright creepy, especially when Hahn’s oversexed Babs Merrick starts aggressively hitting on him. And then there is Ferrell himself — who makes his obligatory weirdo cameo as Don’s former partner, who died in a skydiving accident while dressed for a President’s Day sale as Abraham Lincoln. His character isn’t the only element of this movie that lands with a thud.

17 Again

It’s too bad for 17 Again, Burr Steers’ engaging but pedestrian comedy, that young Zac Efron doesn’t have a little bit more Lindsay Lohan in him. Efron is effortlessly diverting as an adult trapped in a teen’s body. But, unlike Lohan — who gave a rich performance as another adult trapped in a teen’s body in the 2003 remake of Freaky Friday — Efron has no edge. And although that edgelessness might prolong his career, it keeps 17 Again from having anything surprising to say about teenage life in 2009.

I Love You, Man

Paul Rudd is a phone book actor, meaning he’s just one of those guys who could stand there and read a phone book and we’d laugh. Just watch him in the first few scenes of I Love You, Man, when his character, Peter Klaven, listens in on a raunchy conference call between his fiancee, Zooey (Rashida Jones), and her best girlfriends. Or listen as he makes up fake guy-talk when he goes on a first man-date with Sydney Fife (Jason Segel), the shambling Lost Boy whom Peter befriends in hopes of finding a best man for his wedding. I Love You, Man features the usual quota of jokes involving masturbation, projectile vomiting and flatulence. But is it worth it? Yes, thanks to Rudd and Segel (and some terrific cameos). Contains pervasive profanity, including crude sexual references. DVD Extras: Includes deleted scenes, outtakes, and gag reel. Also: Gigantic, The Tiger’s Tail, and 90210: The Complete First Season.

Filmmaker Keener happy where he is By Ben Flanagan Special to The Star

Anniston filmmaker Jason LaRay Keener doesn’t want to tell the same stories over and over. He wants to follow his dreams, quite literally, and try to record what he can faintly remember from his sleep. Making both fictional narratives and documentaries, Keener likes to experiment and give audiences stories that might not make a whole lot of sense on the surface. It’s up to them to dig deeper and find whatever meaning they can in it. He screened his DVD of short films, Catfish with Falcon Wings, last month at the Bottletree Café in Birmingham. He’s also won a few awards at Sidewalk Film Festival Scramble contests with those films, so he’s making an impression on someone in the Magic City. As a movie fan, he tends to migrate toward Nashville and Atlanta to see movies on a big screen he can’t see here in Calhoun County. If he could, he’d go live at the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, but he’s perfectly content making his movies in his hometown, a place he calls “marvelous” for filmmaking. We talk to Keener about casting his family members in his movies, Blue Velvet, Cherokee County and

his advice to young artists in this area. What’s the latest with Reining Nails (his film company)? Anything in the pipeline? I’m organizing a documentary at the moment. Then in December, I’m scheduled to make my first feature film. Neither will be anything like my shorts, and that’s all I’d say about either of them at this point. What kind of stories do you want to tell now? I’m not really interested in one type of story. If anything will be consistent in my work, I hope it’s continuing to create interesting images, setting my films in the South and avoiding cliché storytelling gimmicks. I have absolute disdain for films or literature in which the viewer or reader can anticipate plot points. Life and dreams are unpredictable, and I call for a cinema that follows that example. Do you write most of your films, or do you film what suddenly comes to you in a spur-of-themoment sort of technique? Whenever appropriate, both, especially regarding the shorts, and obviously documentaries. Any features I make will always be more carefully

planned out because more money is on the line, but I’ll always encourage improvisation and reinvention when it feels right. I believe in screenwriting, but I reserve the right to change my mind when the camera is in my hands. Sometimes I even edit things into a new context. I like to stay open minded until a project is finished. How can using family members as actors in your films enhance the experience for the viewer and for the filmmaker? I don’t know if it can ever really enhance the experience for the viewer. For the filmmaker, the film can become a lot more personal and also have an additional function as a home video. It’s good quality time, too. What movies have you seen in theaters this summer that you’ve liked? Last week, I rewatched Blue Velvet at the Plaza Theatre in Atlanta, one of my favorite places on earth. I liked the first act of Up. When it turned into a series of gags about goofy talking dogs, I wanted to walk out. The only other film I’ve even seen in theaters this summer is Terminator: Salvation. I’d have felt a lot better if I’d lost my $8 being mugged instead.

community in Calhoun County? Have you noticed any sort of initiative on the part of local artists to utilize the area in making films? I don’t really know any local filmmakers, except for my friend, Annie Brunson, and I think she just does it for fun. As far as I’m concerned, Calhoun County is a marvelous place to make movies. There are so many visually interesting areas to exploit. There are beautiful natural locations and there are ugly commercial locations, and both can be utilized for the kind of cinema that I want to see. Do you feel like you can accomplish your long-term filmmaking goals in a town like Anniston? I don’t think I’d limit myself to Anniston. There is much to be said for Cherokee County, where I was born. I’ve shot a lot in Gaylesville, Alabama. I do love that town, which I don’t think is a very popular opinion for other nonoutdoorsmen. It has a certain quality that I can’t put my finger on; all I know is it feels correct when I’m shooting there. Does Anniston give an aspiring or working filmmaker enough of a nurturing landscape and environment to succeed or just tell good stories? As I said before, I think we have swell landscapes at our disposal. Too numerous to list, but if you open your eyes and stare very hard, perhaps you will see what I mean. ‘Family Guy’ cast performs abortion episode By DERRIK J. LANG Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Family Guy was uncensored for Emmy voters. The cast of the bawdy popular animated Fox series performed a never-to-be-aired episode for members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the press on Wednesday evening at the Ricardo Montalban Theatre in Hollywood. The episode’s topic du jour? Abortion. “Not as bad as you think,” said Seth MacFarlane, the husky toned Family Guy creator who serves as executive producer, writer and who also supplies numerous voices on the show, including bumbling Griffin family patriarch Peter, antagonistic toddler Stewie and talking dog Brian. MacFarlane was joined on stage by fellow Family Guy voice actors John Viener, Danny Smith, Christine Lakin, Alec Sulkin, Mila Kunis and Alex Borstein. The actors read their lines in front of a live orchestra with MacFarlane and Borstein performing musical routines between acts. Most of the episode dealt with matriarch Lois (played by Borstein) deciding to become a surrogate mother for her infertile friend — against Peter’s wishes. After her friend is killed in a car crash, the Griffins are left with the difficult decision of what to do about the pregnancy. At one point, Peter watches an anti-abortion video, which proclaims several people would be alive if abortion wasn’t legal, including a fourth Stooge, the guy who would have killed Adolf Hitler and Osama bin Laden’s America-loving brother, who could have prevented 9/11. Inappropriate or not, the crowd was in stitches. The series, which is set in the fictional suburb of Quahog, R.I., has had a penchant for political incorrectness and going to the edge since premiering in 1999 and being canceled — and then later resurrected — in 2000 and again in 2002. Before Wednesday’s show began, 20th Century Fox Television spokesman Chris Alexander warned the audience not to record the live performance “because this episode has never aired, and quite frankly never will air, but it will probably be on DVD at some point.” Family Guy is the first animated comedy to be nominated for a comedy series Emmy since The Flintstones in 1961. This year, it will go up against series such as 30 Rock and The Office.

news

As a filmmaker constantly searching for new inspiration through new feature films, does it bother you that Calhoun County might not bring as many independent or foreign releases to the AmStar 12? Do you drive out of town to see those movies? Life is too short to be bothered by these kinds of things. I stay in Birmingham a lot these days, and that city is hardly any better. I mentioned the Plaza Theatre in Atlanta earlier; I go there when I can. I feel very comfortable there. Much further away is the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville. I would live in the Belcourt if they would let me. Both of those theaters proudly offer film prints of some of my favorite movies, which are usually older, and I appreciate them both for it. I don’t see a lot of new films anymore anyway. There are a handful of active living directors I keep up with, but it’s rare that I know anything about the latest and greatest. I’m not pessimistic about modern cinema, I just honestly don’t have the time to see everything I want to. Lately, my girlfriend and I have been studying specific directors and that consumes most of my time allotted for film viewing. I’m trying to learn and be more influenced by the masters I admire, like (Robert) Bresson, (Werner) Herzog and (Andrei) Tarkovsky. Even if Calhoun County started screening independent films, I can’t be sure I’d bother. I’d rather spend my money in Nashville or Atlanta for their retrospectives. And now I sound like a boring, pretentious snob. I promise I’m not!

I gotz me a fancy laptop Tax-free weekend — is there anything sweeter? Once a year, a public saddled with sales taxes can throw off their shackles of self-imposed tyranny and spend like the credit card bill isn’t coming next month. Yes, it’s supposed to be for the school children. But I am a perpetual student, one who needs one of them dang old fancy laptops. I purchased a Toshiba A505 with 4 gigabytes of RAM and ATI Mobility Radeon video card. That’s the geeky stuff. The laptop is sleek, black and Dan incredibly lightweight. It also handles Whisenhunt “World of Warcraft” better than my Pushing Buttons desktop PC. The version I got does not come with Microsoft Office. Oddly enough, I miss it, so I’m going to purchase my own copy soon. On my PC I’m accustomed to running Windows XP. I’ve heard a lot of teeth gnashing over Vista, and I’m not too upset with it. Getting through the set up was a bit of a pain in the butt, but once I got rolling, it hasn’t been too bad. I am interested in seeing the free Windows 7 upgrade. So far, the battery life has been good for me. I usually get two hours out of it, which I think is a reasonable amount of time. One big negative is the screen resizing on the mouse pad. The way it’s supposed to work is you use your index finger and thumb on the key pad to “stretch” your screen or “shrink” it. I find it’s way too touchy on this machine and often works when I don’t want to use it. When I do get an itch to use it, it does not respond well. The networking was easy enough to set up and I can now play media files from my desktop PC on my laptop. It’s nice to be able to listen to music off my computer while I’m drifting off to sleep without blaring it in the next room.

I think this was a good purchase. It’s not a Mac, but maybe Macs are overrated? At least I’ll have more places to take it for repairs if it breaks.

‘WoW’ changes Every so often “World of Warcraft” unleashes some massive patch and upends our understanding of the planet. In the latest version, the designers tried to make player-versus-player battlegrounds faster, among numerous other changes. I emphasize the battlegrounds because that’s where I spend most of my time. My favorite in my current level bracket is Warsong Gulch, a game where players raid each other’s opposing castles and snatch the flag. Whichever team scores three points first wins. Or at least, that’s the way it was. Now, Blizzard has imposed a 20-minute limit on Warsong. The group that scores first wins if the score is tied at the end of the match. While I don’t disagree with the idea of making these things faster, I think Blizzard has royally screwed up here. When a team scores first they have no incentive to play strong offense. The winning team can “turtle” in their flag chamber and effectively shut down the other team by using their whole team to defend the flag. The winning team might send one or two players to capture the losing team’s flag, but only as a means of keeping them from swarming the winning team’s flag chamber. From a competitive standpoint it’s frustrating when the winning team only has to score once and basically run down the clock. Why can’t the two teams just tie? Or go into overtime? I can think of multiple ways to settle this, but giving the win to the first team that scores has really brought down the quality of Warsong. I hope it’s something Blizzard will address in another patch.

‘Brutal Legend’ to include Sabbath, Megadeath By DERRIK J. LANG Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — “Brutal Legend” will rock out with a lengthy list of metal legends. Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Megadeath and Motorhead are among the 75 bands that will be featured in the video game starring Jack Black as a roadie who fights evil in a mythical metal-themed world. Over 100 songs — such as Motley Crue’s “Dr. Feelgood,” Kiss’ “God of Thunder” and Ratt’s “Lay It Down” — will be included in the third-person action game. “Since the beginning of the project, there are a few songs that I’ve dreamed of having in the game, like ‘Children of the Grave,”’ said creator Tim Schafer. “Every time I heard ‘Children of the Grave’ by Black Sabbath, I always thought it sounded like people getting ready for war. I had a list of songs like that, but it only covered 10 percent of the game.” Schafer said the game’s tunes are

It’s really appropriate because there’s these guys mining through rocks. It was the perfect song to use, so we’re really happy to get that in there.”

‘Mad Men’ is back with more 1960s modern living By FRAZIER MOORE Associated Press

NEW YORK — In its first two seasons, Mad Men rang true, and familiar, from across a half-century divide. As this masterful AMC drama resumes (now in mid-1963), viewers will feel, like never before, the bond between our time and the past as Mad Men vividly evokes it. The series is a yeasty blend of hopes, anxiety, delusions and disgruntlement. In 2009, we know how that goes. There are shake-ups and layoffs at New York’s Sterling Cooper advertising agency, which, late last season, was taken over by a British ad firm. “Is that the last of it?” says Don Draper, the agency’s creative director, to his partners after they’ve sacked another colleague. “’Cause I don’t like how much I’m getting used to these.” Meanwhile, the Baltimorebased maker of London Fog raincoats is fretting that everyone who needs a raincoat has already bought one. But Draper, angling to land this account, is ready with reassurance. “There will be fat years and there will be lean years,” he says. “But it is going to rain.” He speaks with authority. The magnetic yet tormented Draper (series star Jon Hamm) seems always to be weathering some personal tempest. No matter how sharp he looks in a raincoat, or any garb, it isn’t enough to keep those forces at bay. The world keeps spinning on Mad Men, as today, with an escalating sense that massive changes lurk at the horizon. And not only devastation, though doomsday was just barely averted at the end of last season with a peaceful resolution of the U.S-Russia missile crisis of October 1962. As the new season begins (Sunday, 10 p.m. EDT), Don’s wife Betty (January Jones), with whom he has a lonely marriage beneath a lovely veneer, is nine months pregnant with their third child. Skirtchasing agency partner Roger Sterling (John Slattery) still professes to be happy with his fiancee, a former secretary at the

January Jones portrays Betty Draper, left, and Jon Hamm portrays Don Draper in the AMC series, ‘Mad Men.’ agency who is less than half his age. The family he dumped to be with her isn’t so happy. And in an episode soon, marijuana finds its way into an office of the traditionally gin- and bourbon-soaked Sterling Cooper! As before, Mad Men unfolds defiantly brooding, wryly witty, at chosen moments heartbreaking. The saga goes its own way, and therefore seems to be missing any obvious plot lines (in fact, it’s avoiding any obvious formula). There are numerous scenes, and yet the action moves at a deliberative, cushiony pace. The dialogue is smart, but sparse. “I’m engaged,” says the airline stewardess seducing Don Draper on a business trip. “On the other hand, you might be my last

chance.” “I’ve been married a long time,” replies Draper. “You get plenty of chances.” There are no easy answers here, even fewer easy questions. Whiny account executive Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser) erupts with a doozy of a question to his wife when he discovers that his promotion wasn’t quite what he expected: “Why does it always have to be like this? Why can’t I get anything good all at once?” There’s no answer to that — short of giving Pete a slap. A past winner of Emmy, Peabody and Golden Globe awards, Mad Men continues to blaze new ground. But it’s also a throwback that, from today’s vantage point, seems extravagant, inefficient, even inconvenient for viewers who prefer pat TV fare.

PASADENA, Calif. — In a fall season that promises to be drama heavy, and in particular, medical dramas, ABC is taking a different tack, at least on Wednesday nights. The network is introducing a block of comedies, and not the broadcast TV version of the sort of R-rated fare that’s big on the big screen. Wednesday night on ABC this fall is going to be all about family fun with three new family-themed comedies debuting — Modern Family, The Middle and Hank. In panel after panel during ABC’s day with the nation’s television critics, producers and actors offered some variation on the observation Kelsey Grammer — who is both — made. “I was looking around for something different,” said the star and executive producer of Hank, a new half-hour sitcom about a rich CEO whose company goes under, forcing him and his family to radically downscale their New York lifestyle into a rundown house in small-town Virginia. “It occurred to me we haven’t seen a traditional family show. I asked my agent, ’Do they still make those.’ And then along came the script for Hank.’ The line that sold him on the show was repeated by creator Tucker Cawley. Modern Family is also in that Wednesday night comedy block on ABC and judging from the pilot and the panel discussion, it may be one of the breakout shows people are talking about this fall. Start with it’s smart and funny. The show has a slick, cinematic look and feel as its single camera moves between three different families that are all part of the same family — a gay couple with an adopted baby, a traditional nuclear family of mom, dad and two kids, and the family’s patriarch (Ed O’Neill) and his new young trophy bride. As an added dimension, Modern Family is the latest show to employ the faux documentary gambit popularized by The Office but going back to This is Spinal Tap. Another show that promises to be a buzztacular event this fall is Flashforward, from the fertile mind of David S. Goyer, the writer behind Dark City and Batman Begins. The pilot presents a Lost-like premise: Everyone around the world blacks out for 2 1/2 minutes during which they flash-forward to where they’re going to be and what they’re going to be doing six months from now. The show centers on an FBI team (led by Joseph Fiennes) trying to figure out what happened and who (or what) is behind it. While Goyer assured that “by the end of the first season, most of the questions will be answered,” that was about it for specifics.

side like this,” said Mark Spiegler, head of the Spiegler Girls talent agency, who has worked in porn since 1995. “It’s the free stuff that’s killing us, and that’s not going away,” said Dion Jurasso, owner of porn production company Combat Zone, which has seen its business fall about 50 percent in the past three years. Porn is hardly the only segment of the media industry struggling with these issues. But its problems appear to be more severe. Although online piracy has forced big changes in the music industry and is starting to affect movies and television, it has upended adult entertainment. At least five of the 100 top U.S. Web sites are portals for free pornography, according to Internet traffic ranking service Alexa.com. The adult entertainment business, which was previously in the vanguard of home video, satellite and cable television and digital distribution, now finds itself leading the rest of the entertainment industry in losses from them.

LOS ANGELES — The television academy is scrapping its “time-shifting” plans and will present all 28 Emmy Awards during the September telecast. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced last month that it would pre-tape eight awards presentations and acceptance speeches, including some in the writing category. Members of the Writers Guild of America blasted the academy for the plan in a letter signed by some of the top TV showrunners. The academy says the decision was made to “mend relationships within the television community” and allow the telecast producer to focus on “creative elements” during the live show. — Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — On a recent Saturday night, Savannah Stern earned $300 to hang out for seven hours at a party wearing nothing but a feather boa. The veteran of more than 350 hard-core pornography productions took the job to earn extra cash and to network. But the word at the 35th anniversary party for Hustler magazine was not heartening, especially among the roughly 75 other women working there. “At least five girls I haven’t seen in a while came up to me and said, ‘Savannah, are you working?’ ” said Stern, who started in the industry four years ago and, like most adult performers, uses a stage name. “I had to say, `No, not really,’ and they all said, `Yeah, I’m not either.’ ” The adult entertainment business, centered in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, has weathered several recessions since it took off with the advent of home video in the 1980s. But this time the industry is not dealing with just a weakened

economy. A growing abundance of free content on the Internet is undercutting consumers’ willingness to pay for porn and with it the ability of many workers to earn a living in the business. For Stern, 23, the rapid decline of job opportunities in the porn business has been dramatic. She has gone from working four or five days a week to one and now has employers pressuring her to do male-female sex scenes for $700, a 30 percent discount from the $1,000 fee that used to be the industry standard. Less than two years ago, Stern earned close to $150,000 annually, sometimes turned down work and drove a Mercedes-Benz. Now she’s aggressively reaching out for jobs and making closer to $50,000 a year. Industry insiders estimate that since 2007, revenue for most adult production and distribution companies has declined 30 percent to 50 percent and the number of films made has fallen sharply. “We’ve gone through recessions before, but we’ve never been hit from every
