Birmingham duo gets state’s first film incentives MONTGOMERY — An independent movie about a talented young singer is the first project to receive financial incentives from the Alabama Film Office. Gov. Bob Riley announced Wednesday that the movie will employ more than 160 Alabamians “in front of and behind the cameras.” According to the script, the story will be set in Birmingham and rural Alabama. Birmingham filmmakers Alan Hunter and Hugh Hunter began filming Lexi Alexander’s script of Lifted on Monday. The movie is about a father who encourages his son to pursue a dream of becoming a singer. Alabama Tourism Director Lee Sentell said the $675,000 film should qualify for a rebate of $153,750, based on the amount of money producers expect to spend in the state. — Associated Press

Spector writes about life behind bars By LINDA DEUTSCH Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — Music legend Phil Spector, in prison for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson, has been writing letters about his life behind bars — saying in a letter released Wednesday that he fears for his safety and would like to be moved to “a better prison.” Spector wrote to his friend Steve Escobar, a musician and music journalist, of his chagrin at being in the same prison as notorious murderers including Charles Manson and Sirhan Sirhan. He said he is working with his attorneys “to get a better prison with
people more like myself in it during the appeal process instead of all these lowlife scumbags, gangsters and Manson types ... They’d kill you here for a 39-cent bag of soup!” Spector, 69, said his spirits were up because his wife, Rachelle, has begun visiting him two days a week at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison at Corcoran. The prison is 400 miles from their Alhambra home, he said, and his wife has been driving back and forth each weekend. “She’s a real trouper,” he said of his 29-year-old wife. “...All in all, it’s like a dream come true having her by my side again.” Spector said his wife brings him

Prosecutors called witnesses to show that Clarkson was the last in a long line of women whom Spector threatened with guns.

BURBANK, Calif. — Jay Leno said he’s looking forward to being a star-maker for young comedians on his new prime-time show. The Jay Leno Show, airing at 9 p.m. weekdays starting Sept. 14, will include taped pieces from comics including Liz Feldman, Mikey Day and Rachael Harris, Leno told reporters Wednesday. “I hope people become famous and get offered shows,” Leno said. If he someday hears, “‘Jay, we’re replacing you with the guy you discovered,”’ that would be great, Leno said. But it’s not just men who will be spotlighted — or, as Leno put it, “a bunch of white guys doing standup.” “I think we have a diverse group. It looks like America,” he said, with women, African-Americans including D.L. Hughley, and other minorities. Among the segments in production: Feldman teaching older people how to use Twitter, and Hughley suggesting bake sales and other fundraisers for California’s fiscal woes. It’s a new approach to showcasing comedians who have been a staple on talk shows, Leno said. He recalled seeing their standup routines on Tonight as a youngster and then performing on the show when he was making his own name. But within the last decade or so, he said, standup started to lose its “snap” on talk shows. He’ll still do a monologue to open the hour and other comedians will perform as well as he seeks to “mix it up” on his show, details of which were still being hashed out. There will be a “10 at 10” feature, with “ridiculous, celebrity-based questions” for stars and newsmakers, Leno said. The Jay Leno Show will debut with Jerry Seinfeld and a musical performance by Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West.

The Calhoun County Civic Chorale is seeking singers for the autumn season, which begins with a rehearsal on Aug. 31 at 7:15 p.m. in the Performance Center of Mason Hall on the Jacksonville State University Campus. Members have voices that blend well with others, are able to learn individual vocal parts from written music and enjoy singing classical choral masterworks. The Chorale is under the direction of Dr. Patricia Corbin, the JSU director of choral activities, and includes community members as well as JSU students and faculty. This season the ensemble will perform Camille Saint Saens “Christmas Oratorio,” Franz Josef Haydn’s Te Deum and other smaller works in concert on Dec. 6. The Aug. 31 rehearsal is an open house where interested singers can experience the chorale without further obligation. NEW YORK — Will.i.am would love to say “I told you so” to all the people who have bashed the Black Eyed Peas in the past, but he won’t — even though the group just made history on the Billboard charts. “There’s a part of me that wants to be cocky, but then I can’t be cocky,” the 34-yearold Peas leader said in a phone interview from Los Angeles on Tuesday. This week the foursome, who have had their share of critics, will have topped Billboard’s Hot 100 singles charts for 20 consecutive weeks, the most ever by an act. “Boom Boom Pow” and the song that dislodged it, “I Gotta Feeling,” have been at the top of the charts for 12 and eight weeks, respectively. Though the band has had big hits over the years, “Boom Boom Pow” was their first No. 1 single. Will.i.am says he’s surprised how successful the song became. “I knew that ‘Boom Boom Pow’ would be big in the clubs, but I didn’t know it would be that potent with the world, outside of the club. So that my accountant’s aunt would be like: Black Eyed Peas, I love ‘Boom Boom Pow!”’ he laughed. “I didn’t know it was going to be that. I didn’t know that teachers would say I like ‘Boom Boom Pow.”’ But the success is not pure luck, will.i.am explains. Though he says the band didn’t listen to the radio when creating their latest disc, The E.N.D., he says they did heavy research by partying at underground nightclubs and events. They chose “Boom Boom Pow” as the first single after the response it got when they debuted it at a Grammy party this year. After its success, they used the same idea for their current hit. “When I picked up ‘I Gotta Feeling’ we tested in the clubs, looked at people, how they responded to a song they didn’t know. We’re looking at what’s the best summer song out of all the songs, let’s go out there and have a party,” he explained. So they had a party. And the response was great. He says the group will use the same strategy for the third single, the groovy “Meet Me Halfway.” “We kept in mind when it would be coming out: It’ll be out for the holidays. Do we want to be jam-pack smacking people high octane in the club during Christmas? No. So let’s know that the emotion we want to get out there is still melodic, a love subject would be cool around Christmas and we still want to be in the club,” he said.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Ruby Amanfu and Sam Brooker get a funny look sometimes when they step on stage. She’s a black woman from Ghana, West Africa. He’s a white guy from Green Bay, Wis. People aren’t sure what to expect. “We’ve played in towns where we get on stage and people have their arms crossed,” Amanfu recalled with a laugh, “God forbid we have our fiddle player and classical cellist with us. “Then they hear what we’re doing, and they get it,” she said. The “it” is a blend of pop, folk and R&B on their first full-length CD that came out Tuesday, Sam & Ruby: The Here and the Now. The music is acousticbased and comfortable alongside artists like India. Arie and Norah Jones. Sam & Ruby’s musical connection is as unlikely as it is fortuitous. Amanfu moved to the U.S. with her family when she was 3, settling in Nashville where her father worked as a computer programmer. Her parents loved gospel music and the native sounds of their homeland. They were wary of American pop culture and tried to shield their children from it. They had to be horrified when Ruby latched onto Madonna’s 1989 album Like a Prayer, with its controversial video featuring burning crosses and religious imagery. But the record became Amanfu’s entry to pop music. “That whole album is full of so much whimsy and so much beauty and soul,” she said and began recit-
ing lines from the song “Dear Jessie:” “Pink elephants and lemonade, dear Jessie hear the laughter running through the love parade.” Amanfu studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston and released an electro-pop CD in the United Kingdom. After a year at Berklee, she had a decision to make. “I could stay in Boston and continue as a songwriting major, or I could come back to Nashville and kick up some dust,” she said. She went home and made music her career. Meanwhile, Brooker grew up listening to ’70s singer-songwriters like James Taylor, Paul Simon and Cat Stevens. His father was a musician who encouraged his son to play guitar and sing. By his late teens, Brooker was performing in bars. He earned a degree in biology and moved to Nashville where he worked as a genetic researcher by day and a singer-songwriter by night. He and Amanfu met through a mutual friend in 1999, but it would be years before they’d make music together. They became friends and mutual admirers, but as Amanfu put it, “If you have gone to make your life to be a solo artist, it means you probably don’t want to be in a band. You don’t have the capacity to be in a band, and we all know the layers and levels of that. With Sam, it really had to be obvious for us and so natural.” That moment came when Amanfu was writing a song to pitch for The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood film soundtrack and asked Brooker to help her finish it. The song, “The Here and the Now,” didn’t make the soundtrack, but it became the catalyst to their musical partnership.

single “Don’t Believe A Word” he laments that “We like thugs when they attack/And we like crime when it’s black on black.” “Summer Town” is an acousticflavored delight, “Water Landing” soars with a gospel choir, and lighter moments come with mid-tempo tracks “About to Break,” “One in Ten” and “Why Can’t You Be.” It’s been a while, but Third Eye Blind hasn’t forgotten how to lay down a strong record. Joe Henry’s new album is masterful Joe Henry Blood From Stars
Reviewing Blood From Stars is daunting because Joe Henry has already done so eloquently in a threepage essay included in the liner notes. Henry’s a marvelous writer of song, too, and Blood rivals his best work. It laments a world where “the stars have gone astray,” “true revelation is a thug” and “reason is traded for rhyme.” Such sentiments are attached to music that mitigates the gloom, the way the blues can. Henry borrows from that genre, and jazz as well. A Grammy-winning producer, he throws in clangs, crashes, squeals and other spasms of odd noise. The quirky rhythm of the record is crucial, too. Songs punch and jab and run together. Drums thunder. Henry breathes in the middle of vocal phrases. The result is exhilarating.
Helping Henry pull it all together is an excellent supporting cast that includes guitarist Marc Ribot, drummer Jay Bellerose, jazz pianist Jason Moran and Henry’s 17-year-old son, Levon, a precocious saxophonist who shines on the instrumental “Over Her Shoulder.” Henry’s introductory essay shows he’s of a generation that believes in the album as a form of artistic expression. It’s a form he has mastered. CHECK THIS OUT: The lovely “Light No Lamp” serves as bookends. Moran plays it as a solo instrumental prelude, and Henry sings it as a coda and hopeful benediction. — Steven Wine, Associated Press

McEntire’s music stays current, timeless Reba McEntire Keep on Loving You
Things are tough out there for women: working women, single women, married women, lonely women, abandoned women. But they all have Reba, the Oprah of country music (and billed first-name only here), to turn to for a word of wisdom, comfort, advice or downhome common sense. The Oklahoma-born singerturned-actress, 54, has an uncanny way of staying connected to longtime fans and bringing new ones aboard. It can’t hurt that she’s kept herself plenty visible in recent years on television, on Broadway and on concert stages, while musically she reaches out on each album with songs for pretty much every one of those aforementioned constituencies. Over the course of the album the messages get a bit mixed: In “Consider Me Gone,” she sings of cutting losses and moving ahead quickly when the passion has left a relationship; then in “I Keep on Loving You,” the recommendation
is patience and forgiveness for a partner who missteps time after time; in the sinister “Maggie Creek Road,” it’s serious payback time for one pistol-packin’ mama who’s scarred but not scared. Some tunes feel chosen more for their music video potential than for what they add to McEntire’s considerable musical legacy. She spends most of the time in the country-poprock end of the musical spectrum she helped map in the ’80s. It is, however, a delight to hear her return to her Western swing roots in the closing track, “I’ll Have What She’s Having,” because she has the requisite rhythmic spring down to her marrow. It’s admirable that McEntire can stay current, but it’s even more impressive when she sounds so joyfully timeless. — Randy Lewis, Los Angeles Times
Benson’s new album worth relishing Brendan Benson My Old, Familiar Friend
Brendan Benson has at least three good ideas before he ever parts his lips on “A Whole Lot Better,” the first track of his new album My Old, Familiar Friend. First, a tiny synthesizer flutters into focus, then a big prog-rock guitar riff stomps around a bit before finally building into one of the better updates of Alex Chilton’s powerpop in Benson’s career. Plenty of equally inspired singles follow on Friend. Enough, in fact, to make you wonder how a songwriter so gifted and effortless became most famous as Jack White’s wingman in the Raconteurs. The problem might be that Benson, for all his skills as a writer, is still missing a bit of that inscrutable star’s juju. But don’t lose sight that we have 11 perfect, swaggering new pop
songs in the world. “Garbage Day” lays a melancholy disco orchestra over a witty impending-breakup ballad: “If she throws her heart away / I’ll be there on garbage day.” “Don’t Want to Talk” has black-tongued pluck worthy of Joe Jackson, and the album closes grandly with the poison-pen rocker “Borrow.” That Benson probably already has a dozen as-good new arrows in the quiver is the curse of the prodigious. But with songs like these, as coy and shiny as new pennies, Benson’s private hunt for airtight guitar pop is worth relishing. — August Brown, Los Angeles Times

Following a six-year break between full lengths, alt rock veterans Third Eye Blind again walk a fine line between aggression and a deft pop sensibility on their latest, Ursa Major. Frontman Stephan Jenkins still knows his way around a catchy hook (even those who hated the “do-dodo’s” of 1997’s “Semi-Charmed Life” probably couldn’t get it out of their heads) but he never skimps on throwing down a hard riff or unleashing a scream to get his point across. Jenkins’ lyrics juxtapose poetry with profanity, anger with longing and big world issues with the personal — drug and emotional abuse for example — and his emotive voice still boasts a hip-hop influenced cadence that makes for some fun and interesting wordplay. Opening with the pulsating “Can You Take Me,” Jenkins wails “Let’s start a riot me and you/cuz a riot’s overdue,” and on the world-weary

Alexis Bledel, the Gilmore Girl with the Traveling Pants, takes a baby-step into adulthood with a retro romantic comedy about looking for love and career fulfillment the minute you get out of college. How retro is Post Grad? It’s a cornball affair that presumes that, oh, 40 years of women’s rights and movies like Reality Bites never happened. Getting your career started in a dismal economy isn’t remotely as important as making sure you’re set with Mr. Right first — at the ripe old age of 22. It’s like Mad Men with laughs. Bledel plays Ryden Malby, who finishes college, expects to start work at a prestigious L.A. publishing house, get her own apartment and experience life finally. But when she doesn’t land the dream gig, she’s stuck at home with her quirky family (Hollywood loves quirky families), headed by luggage salesman Dad (Michael Keaton), adoring Mom (Jane Lynch) and shopping-for-coffins Granny (Carol Burnett). ‘500 Days’ is a charming tale

Hear her nemesis (Catherine Reitman) lecture her that “struggle and strife come before success, even in the dictionary.” See Ryden throw herself at one guy and then the other. That this was written by a woman and directed by another (Shrek vet Vicky Jenson) is particularly vexing. It doesn’t help that the pacing lets the wan laughs and trite situations wilt on their own. Keaton, at least, throws himself at even the slowest scenes. Dad
teaches his daughter how to show off luggage with “the wave, just like the girls on Deal or No Deal.” He cautions her on sex — “Ix-nay on the oodle-day.” Keaton burying a cat in a pizza box? Funny. A pizza box that’s too big for the hole? Funnier. There’s nothing here to offend, aside from a few jarring profanities. Bledel is as charming as ever, but you have to wonder if she believes and would support the decisions Ryden makes. Post Grad is a Devil Wears Prada without the devil, a Reality Bites without any bite — and not much reality, either.

The X-Games, Disney subsidiary ESPN’s expo of free-style skateboarding, snowboarding, motocross and closed-course car road rallies, makes a dandy proving ground for 3-D film. The depth of field, the skateboards flying into your face and dirt kicked off the screen is novel and actually helps you see all the way-cool stuff these stuntmen-by-another-name do as they “create new ways to fly.” As a movie, though, X-Games 3D: The Movie isn’t a movie at all. It’s a 90-minute commercial for the
games, lacking much in the line of drama, compelling characters or story line. When your contestants are all nice, sportsmanlike chaps who “only compete against themselves,” it’s like watching tennis, pre-Jimmy Conners, or a NASCAR race with all Jeff Gordons. These guys do edgy stuff, but the movie rubs that edge off boarders like Danny Way and most of it off multisport junkie Travis Pastrana. The thrills here are in the stuff guys like Kyle Loza do when they snap on their helmet and say, “I gotta go try to kill myself.” Bones are broken — none graphically — and wiseacre commentators make cracks like “He’s a human lawn dart” after a bad landing. But aside from the 3-D, this commercial screams “DVD.” Fans who ignore the “don’t try this at home” warnings will want to catch that slo-mo flip or spin over and over again. Even the most extreme theaters don’t have provisions for that.
“This is not a love story,” intones a voiceover at the beginning of Marc Webb’s smart, funny (500) Days of Summer, and we learn in the course of the film that this nameless voice is both right and wrong. It’s the story of Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and, yes, Summer (Zooey Deschanel), two young adults who meet and fall in love, as so many do. But there’s nothing conventional about (500) Days of Summer, a fresh July breeze among recent (and mostly stale) romanticcomedy offerings. Written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, it careens back and forth along a year and a half of Tom and Summer’s lives, zipping us from late in the relationship to early and back again. Its visual style is inventive, ranging from a sunny dance number in a park (set to Hall & Oates’ bouncy “You Make My Dreams Come True”) to a split-screen depiction of expectation vs. reality to a scene that simply becomes a drawing to be erased. And it has, at its core, chemistry that jumps off the screen into our laps: From the moment Tom — and the camera — sets eyes on Summer, something magical happens, and we want them to be together. Tom and Summer, both 20-somethings, meet at the greeting-card company where they work, and soon are exchanging kisses beside the copy machine and engaging in other charming office-romance staples. (Come to think of it, I’ve never seen anyone kiss at the copy machine where I work. Maybe I’m just not paying attention.) He’s a cutely sweater-vested fellow who still believes in love; she’s a doe-eyed beauty who says, “There’s no such thing as love, it’s fantasy,” so sweetly that Tom falls head over heels, as do we. And off we go on the Tom-and-Summer roller coaster, through the good dates and the bad dates and the canoodling and the accusations and the meaningful glances and the not-so-meaningful conversation and ... well, everything that goes into 500 days of a relationship, for good or ill. Through it all, Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel find truth in every scene, particularly one late moment in which he shoots her a look that’s a wordless definition of love. (500) Days of Summer is indeed a love story, but an unexpected one, right down to the last word of the screenplay (which I wouldn’t dream of spoiling for you). I fell in love with it, myself; you might, too.

Robert Rodriguez channels his inner 11-year-old with Shorts, a childish but fun wish fulfillment-fantasy for kids that’s equal parts boogers, big messages and product placement. It’s a connected collection of “shorts” — short films about kids (and adults) who encounter a magical wishing rock deep in the heart of Texas. It mocks America’s Crackberry (and iPhone, etc.) epidemic in a kid-friendly farce about being careful what you wish. In Black Falls, everybody works on the Black Box, an all-in-one phone gadget. Not that this makes Cobalt Black (James Spader) happy. He’s paranoid about losing market share, which is why competing marketers
Mrs. (Leslie Mann) and Mr. (Jon Cryer) Thompson are constantly on their Black Boxes, miscommunicating. They barely notice that son Toby “Toe” Thompson (Jimmy Bennett) is friendless, the object of bullying by Black’s hellish daughter, Helvetica (Jolie Vanier, this year’s pre-teen Christina Ricci). That changes when the little rainbow rock falls into his life. Mostly, the kids’ oaths are of the “Holy peanut butter cups!” variety — cursing that doubles as advertising. It’s cute, and it skews young enough that you won’t have to worry about the plugs for this car or that video game company. Thankfully, kids aren’t on the market for anything at IKEA.

It’s not easy to wrap your head around Inglourious Basterds, writer-director Quentin Tarantino’s audacious fantasy of Jewish revenge against the Nazis. Featuring long, talky sequences that give way to sudden, almost cartoonish outbursts of violence, the film is both grindhouse and arthouse; an exploitation film as Jean-Luc Godard might have made. But if you give yourself over to the film’s languid rhythms and its stunning juxtaposition of playfulness and purposefulness, you might just discover that Tarantino has made a masterpiece — a glorious mash-up of every eccentric idea that has ever floated through his movie-mad brain. Inglourious Basterds begins in Nazi-occupied France in 1941, where Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz), nicknamed the “Jew Hunter,” has come to inter-

For nearly 20 minutes, the camera circles around them, and the conversation proves even more circular: Nothing that the jocular, seemingly guileless Landa says can possibly be trusted. The violence, when it explodes, is as abrupt as it is gorgeously filmed.
So far all of this sounds like Tarantino’s last two pictures, the Grindhouse segment Death Proof (lots of talk, followed by a 40-minute car chase) and Kill Bill Vol. 2 (lots of violence, followed by lots of talk, followed by still more violence). But those movies found Tarantino on a one-way journey into his navel, indulging his obsessions with comic
books, Jean-Luc Godard, and cinematic violence at the expense of creating believable characters. This time, though, he’s wedded his experimentation to a genuinely powerful idea: Inglourious Basterds is a kind of revisionist World War II history. Tarantino is handing that era’s cinema back to the Jews, who have been
portrayed in too many films as passive victims waiting to be saved by the Gentiles. (This is the movie Munich could have only dreamed of being.) Here they’re portrayed as ruthless, merciless, mirthful and determined — in short, a group of bad asses. Complete with a Marlene Dietrich-inspired actress (Diane Kruger) who turns out to be a double agent and a recreated Nazi propaganda film, Inglourious Basterds builds to an altogether mindbending climax, which takes place — where else? — inside a movie theater. Everything in the film is play, an elaborate goof on film history — yup, that’s Samuel L. Jackson delivering the periodic bits of narration; and, indeed, that really is Mike Myers, in pancake makeup, playing a member of Winston Churchill’s inner-circle — and yet there is a fierce undercurrent of moral purpose. The climactic image of Eli Roth’s Sgt. Donny Donowitz gunning down a Nazi is as cathartic as it is comic; as powerfully exultant as it is unexpectedly poignant. This is easily the director’s finest work since Pulp Fiction — and just like Pulp Fiction it seems to singlehandedly rewrite the rules of cinema.

He’s been making audiences sticky for 30 years, and they keep coming back for more ... often draped in plastic or carrying heavy umbrellas. With his famed Sledge-o-Matic in hand and a pallet of trembling fruit, prop comic Gallagher has made a name for himself by smashing one with the other. But for those in Gadsden who think of Gallagher as simply “the watermelon guy,” they’ll be in for a surprise on Saturday when comic legend performs at Wallace Hall on the campus of Gadsden State Community College. Gallagher’s brand of smash-mouth comedy puts the idiocy of American culture — from its language to its misplaced family values — firmly in the crosshairs by taking aim, literarily and figuratively, at all that we hold dear, proving that the best comedy reveals a bit of truth. The watermelons are just the finale for a show that’s as visually engrossing as it is scathingly insightful. “It’s a circus of the mind, and everybody loves going to the circus,” says the comedian, who answers only to Gallagher. “My shows are like sports, like boxing. Once I get the audience on the ropes, I try and beat ‘em to death.” Again, given his penchant for wielding a large wooden mallet, one can only hope Gallagher’s joking about that whole “beating to death” part. But for all the audience participation he wants and interaction he craves during the performance — which often leaves the stage littered with everything from a giant couch to a grown-up Big Wheel and every thing in between — what Gallagher doesn’t appreciate is rude

It’s a routine as familiar among fans as it is messy, but during this latest tour, Gallagher’s making an honest effort to connect with those who’ve been loyal to his brand of comedy for so long. After the show, and sometimes during them, audiences will get to interact and mingle with the legend. They can get their pictures taken and kids can even steal a bit of shtick by smashing a watermelon with a hammer. It’s all about enjoying the experience of what it means to go to a Gallagher show. “I’m coming to them and that’s what people expect,” he says. “I only use the props to add dimension and dynamics to an otherwise boring stand-there-and-talk show. “I’m an entertainer. And I don’t want their show ruined by a couple of people who don’t have respect for what I do.” So keep your beer bottles from clinking too loudly and keep conversation to a bare minimum ... remember, the man carries a mallet that’s well versed in busting things to a pulp. For all the audience participation, interviewing Gallagher is no easy task. It’s like jumping onto a carnival ride through the imagination of a comedian whose mind never stops, never slows down and sometimes runs off the rails toward points unknown. Having just stepped out of the stu-
dio where he’d finished recording yet another song, Gallagher’s mind was trained more on lovelorn lyrics than directly answering any of the inane questions that were sure to be all too predictable, given his decades of practice. “I just go wherever my mind takes me,” he says. “And even I don’t know where that’s going to be. But I can’t stop writing or coming up with new ideas ... what else would I do? I’m Gallagher.” On this particular afternoon, he’s written a country ballad, a duet perhaps for the likes of Nashville superstars Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, about learning to settle for someone who will “nearly, dearly do.” Or, there’s the one he wrote earlier that morning, while trading stocks, that includes lyrics like

‘Repo! The Genetic Opera’ needs some love I’m a little disappointed. With all the wackiness currently surrounding our health care debate, why has no one invoked the grim specter of Repo! The Genetic Opera? The movie came out in 2008, well before the current crop of health care conspiracy theories. It’s set in the not-too-distant future where organ failures are rampant. The company GeneCo offers consumers pricey organ transplants on credit. Don’t worry about it now; pay later. Customers who get behind on their payments get a visit Dan from the repo man, who looks Whisenhunt Pushing Buttons like Boba Fett with a meat cleaver. The repo man can dismember the debtor in a spectacular fashion and reclaim GeneCo’s property. People become addicted to designer surgeries and the pain-killing drugs, known as Zydrate. A powerful black market for the drug emerges, fueled by the illegal harvesting of the drug from corpses. The movie is as much about generational conflict as a future health care dystopia. Shilo Wallace is a sheltered young girl suffering from a disease inherited from her mother. Her father, Nathan, lives a secret double life as a repo man. Simultaneously, Rotti Largo, the man in charge of GeneCo, is dying and wondering which one of his flawed offspring will take over the company when he is gone. One of his children is played by Paris Hilton, a grotesque figure in her own right. Oh, and everyone sings the entire movie. Even Paris. The movie was thoroughly panned by critics on Rottentomatoes.com. I think there’s a certain Bmovie sensibility in Repo! that the critics fail to appreciate. Yes, it’s extremely violent in an almost cartoonish way, with humor not unlike Sweeney Todd. The costuming definitely deserves special attention. The
designs captured both the future setting and the grim reality of the film. I thought the songs were weak in some points, but again, this is opera. If they’re going to the store to get some athlete’s foot medicine, they’re going to sing about it. I viewed it as a function of the art form and not an attempt to drive critics insane. My hope is this will become another cult classic like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The subject matter is timely. The commentary, while subtle, stings like a needle full of Zydrate in the eye. It’s certainly a better film than the critics would lead you to believe.
Summer is almost over The summer isn’t a great time for video game releases anyway, but I don’t want the gamers to think I’ve forgotten about you. I’ve got some games waiting for review, but I’ve been entirely too distracted with things that don’t involve sitting in front of a television. Things like going to the lake and beach, swimming on hot days, cooking food outdoors and visiting with old friends. One of The Star’s employees, Whit McGhee, recently took a challenge of 48 hours disconnected from the Internet. After last weekend, I’ve got him beat plus some change. Easiest time I ever did with the lake and the beer and the friendship and whatnot. My status updates were something like this said to someone sitting 3 feet from me: “I’m a little drunk and sunburned. I think I’m gonna go lie down for awhile.” Came back on Monday and had no junkie itch to speak of. Hell, I didn’t even read all of the status updates on Facebook I missed. Common misconception: Just because I spend lots of time on the Internet I am totally incapable of going without. That’s not even remotely true. I did pretty well, thank you very much. And the world was still here when I got back.
‘Shadow Complex’ a triumph of classic game design By LOU KESTEN Associated Press
What’s a gamer to do in the summer, when so few high-profile retail titles are released? I look for new challenges to download — and most of those are going onto my Xbox 360. Xbox Live Arcade is still the core of Microsoft’s online strategy, as demonstrated by its second annual “Summer of Arcade” promotion. “Shadow Complex,” the final entry in “Summer of Arcade 2009,” is one of the finest games of the year. This $15 adventure harkens back to beloved 1990s games like “Super Metroid” and “Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.” They’re
what we called “2-D side-scrollers”: You could move up, down, left or right, with the screen scrolling to follow your character. (“Shadow Complex” is really “2.5-D”: The settings have three dimensions, but you can only move in two.) Your character is a hiker named Jason Fleming, who, with his girlfriend, stumbles across a massive paramilitary complex in the mountains. Your sweetie is taken hostage, so you have to storm the facility — armed only with a flashlight. Of course, you’ll quickly discover more lethal weapons, starting with a pistol and working your way up to a missile launcher. You’ll also find armor, grenades, explosive foam and other devices that
will help you survive the waves of troops and robots that come after you. Combat isn’t the main attraction, though. “Shadow Complex” is essentially a giant maze filled with clever puzzles and hidden prizes. Some parts of the maze can’t be solved until you find certain devices, like a rappelling hook or hyperspeed boots. You can race through the game, but it’s more rewarding to take your time and explore all the nooks and crannies. And once you’re finished, you can tackle a series of “challenge rooms” where you can stress-test all your cool new gear, challenging your friends to get the highest scores or fastest times.

Listening to Kate Gosselin stutter and sniff her way through her recent chats with Today’s Meredith Vieira, it was hard to keep a straight face. Kate doesn’t blame the decision to participate in TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus 8 for the disintegration of her marriage; it probably would have happened anyway. Really? Your husband would have left you for a Star reporter and/or the daughter of the plastic surgeon who gave you a tummy tuck (free, because it was filmed), even if you had just remained some obscure churchgoing Pennsylvania family with a bunch of kids? Vieira, meanwhile, nodded, as if the answer made perfect sense, and moved on to other matters. Of which there were plenty, because even as Kate and Jon and Jon’s girlfriends saturated the entertainment media, Fox announced a two-hour special on Nadya Suleman titled Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage. Promising, as it does, to illuminate the many pressures and anxieties that accompany the birth of octuplets into a family that already had six young children, Fox should include the following warning label: “BEING THE SUBJECT OF A TELEVISION SHOW IS DANGEROUS TO YOUR FAMILY’S HEALTH.” It won’t, of course, because we are in the midst of a crisis of either public health or education. There is nothing in the history of television to suggest that being part of it makes your personal life any easier and plenty to suggest otherwise. Yet people continue to hand over the keys to their homes to camera crews. Are they insane or just not paying attention? Jon and Kate are just the latest in a long line of people who somehow thought they were special enough to overcome the deleterious forces of reality fame. The Bachelor is a public-break-up machine. One of the Real Housewives of New Jersey has had her drug-dealing and kidnapping-charges past revealed. Richard Hatch, the first Survivor winner, did time. There’s no point in even mentioning the Loud family, who famously attempted the Welcome Camera Crew experiment via An American Family in 1971. The parents decided to divorce mid-show, then came together more than 30 years later for A Death in An American Family, which chronicled the decline of eldest son Lance, who died of complications arising from crystal meth addiction and HIV. But Americans are so proudly determined to ignore the teachings of history that they even disbelieve Larry David when he says a Seinfeld reunion is a bad idea. We live in a world where we excoriate the trappings of ambition and fame in films such as The Devil Wears Prada and shows such as Entourage while relentlessly pursuing them in real life. If nothing else, Jon and Kate have proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Americans can hold two opposing thoughts in their heads at the same time, which is, of course, an indication of either genius or insanity. How else to explain Kate Gosselin’s ability to say things like “it would have happened anyway,” or that she and Jon are simply two people with very different goals, and apparently believe them. Nevermind that those goals, which include a lot of face time with interviewers, seem virtually identical. Because whether or not the Gosselins began as an ordinary couple coping with a rather extraordinary family,

Even the professionals have a tough time sticking it out — Brad Pitt went on Today to pitch his new film and philanthropic efforts, but what everyone really wanted to know was how he and Angie were doing. (According to Pitt, just fine.) Ryan O’Neal says he almost made a pass at his own daughter minutes after sliding Farrah’s coffin into the hearse. Why would a couple of rank amateurs think a camera crew was the answer to the universal work/family struggle so many families face? Looking back, it’s easy to see that Jon and Kate was a mistake from the very beginning. Not for the ratings, not for TLC, not for the bottom line, which enriched the bank accounts of many people, including the Gosselins. Just for the marriage. The whole draw of the show, besides the swarm of adorable kids, was how “real” the two seemed together. “Real” meaning that Kate was perennially tightly wound, conflicted as a stay-at-home mom and exasperated. For his part, Jon kept it “real” by shaking his head and smiling, content in the knowledge that because he participated more in his children’s lives than most men of the previous generation, it was all good. Sound familiar? Of course it did, and that’s why people watched. We were fascinated by the couple’s ability to not only control an emerging nation of toddlers while mirroring many of our own feelings, but also their decision to break the cardinal rule of marriage: Don’t Criticize Your Spouse In Public. It worked for about a season, when Kate still looked blotchy and exhausted, when her eyebrows
were still natural and her belly pooched a bit over her pants and Jon had that scraggly beard and seemed to think that the show was just another one of his wife’s crazy plans, like having all these darn babies. Then Kate got a cuter haircut, got the brows waxed, and tightened her abs, Jon’s beard came off and they were celebrities, their talent being their ability to survive their own lives, which had become increasingly complicated by the fact that they were now a television show. At this point, Jon and Kate was set to self-destruct; it was essentially a race against time. Now that the marriage has imploded, the question becomes how real do we honestly like our reality TV? Will our interest in the Gosselins founder now that they have become more ordinary? Cheating husbands are a dime a dozen at the checkout stand, and he’s not even that cute. The ratings for Suleman’s show should offer a good indication. There is nothing to be learned from the Suleman story, no connection to be made with average parents. She is, mercifully, an anomaly, tempted, perhaps, by the attention society increasingly pays to large-number multiples, but certainly responsible for her own actions, an easy person to judge from afar, to pity or vilify as the mood strikes us. But surely this special is a mistake. It is all too easy for us to imagine the tensions and anxiety her situation creates, to do the math and realize that Suleman and her children have no chance of surviving except through the kindness of strangers. But that aid rarely comes without lethally honed strings of television attached; just ask the Gosselins.

Obama is appearing in a 30-minute documentary that will air at 8 p.m. Sept. 8 on BET, MTV, VH1, CMT, Comedy Central, Spike TV and Nickelodeon, all of them Viacom networks. Obama also plans to deliver a back-toschool speech to the nation’s students on the same day.
