lines, so that the eye moves from the pet to a bird perched on the trellis. Segars’ assistant was Jamie Lindsey. When her busy life allows, Segars enjoys gardening and writing as well as visual art, which has included painting furniture, dabbling in oils and doing interior murals. In 2006, she was appointed vicepresident of Alabama Power’s Eastern Division. Segars, who brings diverse creativity into her corporate life, served as a newspaper reporter before joining Alabama Power in 1986 and among other duties, she served as editor of the company’s magazine. Segars serves on at least 10 boards in the county including being the new chair of the Knox Concert Series board. Her current focus is learning more about bookings and contracts. Still, she makes time to hold a paintbrush, which she finds soothing. “I like to plug in my talents for the community when it makes sense,” she said. In addition to the outdoor mural, her idea of compiling a book to raise funds for The Leading Edge Institute, a state wide leadership development program for college women, resulted in a thought-provoking collection Letters to Dani. Published in 2008, it contains professional and personal advice to young women from notable east Alabama women. Segars uses organizational skills used in art as well as in leadership. “You lay the groundwork, pay attention to details and precision, and have the patience to see it through,” she explains. “But as I went on, the scene seemed to come alive on its own.” But David Mashburn gives her full credit for a colorful artistic invention. “I remember when she was here nine hours on a 98degree summer day,” he said. “Her work has brought us lots of attention.”

Classic on Noble sports new outdoor mural If walls could talk, just imagine the stories they could tell. The exterior wall of an Anniston downtown alley tells an important story in a different way. It does not make a political statement, Hervey represent Folsom a new Artists in Action movement or express religious beliefs, as murals have done in their long history. Instead, it is what it is, said Julia Segars, the artist who painted the bright mural above the rear entrance to Classic on Noble. “It’s an acrylic painting on steel and light beige segars brick, one that I wanted to be fun and happy.” And, she said, it’s a tribute to the Classic on Noble owners, David and Cathy Mashburn. “The Mashburns have been so kind to the community,” Segars commented. “They’ve really become an institution in this town.” She loves to paint, and has taken lessons since she was 12. “I’m a threat to every blank space I see,” she said with a grin. “The other murals were already up in the alley, and this back entrance seemed to scream for color.” The project began this spring, although it was delayed because of much rain in April and May. The focus is on the Mashburns’ granddog, a Yorkie named Manolo. The plan was to give context to this little dog with vertical

CHICAGO — In the early 1960s, Mitty Collier had a contract with Chicago’s Chess Records and was riding high in the R&B music industry with her popular ballad “I Had a Talk With My Man Last Night.” And every now and then, a disc jockey will pull out Collier’s 1963 hit, “I’m Your Part-Time Lover” — her answer to Little Johnny Taylor’s “Part Time Love” — during an old-school program, moving the over-50 listeners to turn up the volume and sing along. But Collier, who long ago gave up rhythm and blues in favor of gospel, has never gotten a dime from the radio stations. Now, a bill is making its way through Congress that would require stations to pay royalties to artists when their songs are played on the air. “The artists deserve it,” said Collier, 68, pastor of More Like Christ Christian Fellowship Ministries on Chicago’s South Side. “With things the way they are today, everybody needs every little penny they can get.” While the Performance Rights Act, now in a congressional committee, would affect all artists as well as large radio companies, the legislation has caused hostilities within the African-American community, pitting black-oriented radio stations and their popular DJs against black politicians and artists who support the bill. Radio personalities such as Tom Joyner, whose Tom Joyner Morning Show is owned by Radio One Inc., a black-owned conglomerate, oppose the bill, generating support from their vast listening audiences. Radio-backed campaigns targeting those who support the bill — from members of Congress to outspoken entertainers such as Dionne Warwick — have hit the airwaves in several cities. There is also a division within the civil rights community. The NAACP recently passed a resolution supporting the bill, while activists Al Sharpton, whose radio

Collier has never been paid royalties for when her songs play on the radio, and a new bill would help correct that. show is syndicated by Radio One, and Jesse Jackson, whose show is syndicated by a subsidiary of Clear Channel Corp., oppose it. “Any time you get into a debate about money, everybody pulls out the stops,” said Earl Jones, president and market manager for Clear Channel Radio Chicago, which owns stations across the country. Jones said he opposes the bill largely because half the royalties would go to the record labels under the bill. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., and other supporters contend that it would help to right the wrongs of the past, particularly for AfricanAmerican artists, many of whom were financially exploited by record companies early in their careers and are struggling financially in retirement. Critics such as Cathy Hughes, founder of Radio One, which owns and/or operates 53 radio stations targeting black audiences in 16 markets, have called the bill a “performance tax” that would lead to the demise of black-oriented radio stations that are barely staying afloat in this sagging economy. The fees, however, would be charged to stations on a sliding scale, ranging from $500 a year for stations with annual gross revenues of less than $100,000

to $5,000 or more for stations with annual gross revenues of $500,000 or more. Most talk-radio stations and those that broadcast religious services are exempt. Many of today’s artists who write or co-write their music receive radio royalties. Others have agreements to share royalties with the writers, who own the material. But in the early days of R&B, it was not the case, said Jerry Butler, a major recording artist in the 1950s and 1960s. “It’s always difficult when you get to the table late. You find that all of the good meat has been eaten, and you wind up fighting over scraps,” said Butler, a member of the Cook County Board and a supporter of the bill. Leron Rogers, an Atlanta lawyer who represents artists, said the bill would close a loophole that has allowed terrestrial stations to make money off artists. It would be in line with the Sound Recordings Act passed in 1995, which requires satellite, cable and Internet radio to pay artists, he said. However, several critics have pointed to the fact that artists, backup singers and musicians would receive only 50 percent of the royalties, with the other half going to the content-owner, which in most cases is the record label.

HOLLYWOOD — Barbra Streisand may make beautiful music, but she rarely listens to it. “I don’t understand today’s music,” Streisand acknowledged, adding that she does enjoy some contemporary artists. “I saw John Mayer recently. My God, what a great guitarist and singer, but I don’t turn on music. I listen so much when I am making a record. ... I get so tired of music.” Especially when songs favor the beat over the lyrics. “I can’t relate,” said Streisand, 67. “I guess the society is getting somehow angrier and angrier and less from the heart. It’s sad. You know we are living in very hard times. We are living in fear and anger, and that is represented by the music.” Such negative emotions are nonexistent in her latest album, Love Is the Answer, which will be released Sept. 29. The work, Streisand’s first studio album since 2005’s Guilty Pleasures, is about melodies and lyrics, she said. The bestselling female recording artist in history avoided the recording studio because of her touring schedule as well as the demands of building a new Cape Cod-style house in Malibu. “I didn’t even know if I would have a voice left because I was full of sawdust and screaming over the hammers and the saws,” she said. Love Is the Answer also marks the first time that the Oscar-, Emmy-, Tony- and Grammywinning Streisand has worked with award-winning Canadian jazz artist Diana Krall and her combo. Streisand was executive producer of the album; Krall was producer. Oscar-winning composer Johnny Mandel (“The Shadow of Your Smile”), who has worked with Krall and Streisand previously, provided the disc’s lush orchestrations. “We met several times to just go over songs,” Streisand said of Krall. “She would send me songs. I would tell her what I would like to sing. What I haven’t sung. What I meant to sing.” For example, the smoky bossa nova “Gentle Rain” was in Streisand’s repertoire on her latest tour as “my opener because it was nice to open the voice with a gentle song. Diana had recorded it, so it was the perfect thing to put on this album.” Streisand had wanted to record Jacques Brel and Rod McKuen’s haunting “If You Go Away.” Streisand was such a fan of the French singer Brel that she flew to Marseilles in the 1960s to hear him perform in concert, only to have him not sing his signature tune. The regular CD features the Mandel-arranged orchestra versions of the songs; the two-disc deluxe CD set also features Streisand performing the selections with Krall’s jazz group. Krall always records basic tracks with her band and then the orchestra is added later.

a version of the Everly Brothers’ “When Will I Be Loved.” The album doesn’t burst with the kind of unbridled rock ’n’ roll howl Fogerty unleashed in Creedence Clearwater Revival, but shows off the 64-year-old’s rootsy side, still full of soul. CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: “You can’t please everyone/ So you got to please yourself,” sings Fogerty knowingly on “Garden Party,” the best track of the album for its lyrics and retro references to Yoko Ono and others. — Solvej Schou, Associated Press

Whitney Houston delivers solid comeback CD Whitney Houston I Look to You

The last time Whitney Houston made an attempt at a comeback, with 2002’s Just Whitney, it was overshadowed by her continued free fall into tabloid infamy. Drug use, marital battles and wild behavior tarnished her once-regal image so much it was hard to focus on anything musical from Houston, and the fact that Just Whitney was just OK didn’t help matters. These days, Houston is thankfully in much better form personally, and artistically. She appears to have put her demons behind her, and with I Look to You, she has delivered a very good album that shows the pop queen still has a dazzling voice that can leave you spellbound. Working with an array of songwriters and producers that include proven hitmakers like Diane Warren, Akon and R. Kelly, Houston is certainly helped by topnotch material that can be as engaging as her voice. The disc starts off with a winner, “Million Dollar Bill.” The upbeat, funky R&B tune, produced by Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, is an instant party-starter designed to get people of all ages on the dance floor. “Nothin’ but Love” is a midtempo song that recalls Houston in her early ’80s heyday, with a synthesized sound that sounds retro but manages not to sound dated. The singer blows kisses to both her supporters and haters with lines like, “I

could hold onto pain, but that ain’t what my life’s about, I ain’t blamin’ nobody if I ain’t got my stuff worked out ... Ain’t got nothing but love for ya.” While Houston didn’t contribute to the writing of any of the album’s songs, many of them seem to have been written with Houston’s many tribulations in mind. The title track, a soaring ballad written by R. Kelly, refers to life storms and looking to heaven for salvation. On Warren’s “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength,” Houston sings: “I crashed down, and I tumbled, but I did not crumble, I got through all the pain.” Two of the best songs on the CD have nothing to do with any drama, just love. “Like I Never Left,” a duet with Akon, is a simple, breezy song about reconnecting with a former love. Houston’s voice alternately soars and yearns. “Worth It” is a smoldering song featuring Houston at her seductive best — she doesn’t use her powerful voice at full blast, and doesn’t need to, enticing listeners with the simple beauty of her voice. — Nekesa Mumbi Moody, Associated Press

The Black Crowes rock out live The Black Crowes Before the Frost ...

Mainstream rock acts such as veteran Atlanta outfit the Black Crowes typically find better fortune on the road than on the sales charts. So it’s no surprise that in the last decade brothers Chris and Rich Robinson have focused more on the live experience than sequestering themselves away in a studio honing new material. They get the best of both worlds on this set of new songs recorded earlier this year in Woodstock live, for the most part, in front of a hand-selected audience. Using the home studio built by the Band’s drummer Levon Helm apparently inspired them to branch further than they characteristically have into the various tributaries of American roots music. Those explorations feed into the Southern rock that remains at the center of the Black Crowes’

sound. “Good Morning Captain,” the leadoff track, taps the same kind of big-footprint backbeat and raucous interplay that Helm and his cohorts did so well. The Robinsons — who are joined by the band’s original drummer, Steve Gorman, plus guitarist Luther Dickinson, bassist Sven Pipien and keyboardist Adam MacDougall — move through a range of classic-rock reference points: Creedence-like swamp-rock, Tom Petty-ish Americana, Motown-style psychedelia and, in “Make Glad,” an experiment in Southern prog-funk. There are examinations of rootlessness (“What Is Home,” “Houston Don’t Dream About Me”), the price musicians pay for so much time spent getting from here to there and one heartfelt meditation on the struggle for connection (“Last Place That Love Lives”). — Randy Lewis, Los Angeles Times

Back in 1973, John Fogerty released an album of covers under the name the Blue Ridge Rangers. He played everything on the record, from guitars to drums. The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again is Fogerty’s return to the classics, covering favorites such as “Moody River,” made popular in 1961 by Pat Boone, to tunes by John Prine and John Denver. Fogerty’s voice is twangy and countryish in all the right places, aided by a backing band playing lap steel, fiddle and mandolin. The Eagles’ Don Henley joins in on a smooth, harmony-laced version of Ricky Nelson’s “Garden Party,” while Bruce Springsteen adds his bluesy grit and callbacks of “that’s what I’m talking about” to

LOS ANGELES — Ten years ago, Mike Judge satirized the absurdities of the workplace experience from the perspective of put-upon employees with Office Space. It didn’t do much when it came out but, as we all know by now, it became a cult favorite on cable and home video, to the point where it changed the way you looked at the common stapler. Now, Judge is back to the daily grind with Extract, but this time the writer-director tells his wacky working tales from the boss’ point of view: that of Jason Bateman’s Joel Reynold, owner of a flavor extract factory. It’s doubtful that this comedy will grab its audience in the same way, though. Judge’s characters are so one-note and their misadventures so ridiculous that it’s hard to get attached to them. Pretty much everyone in Extract is stupid, unlikable, selfdestructive or all of the above — and so there are no real surprises. They include:

n Step (Clifton Collins Jr.), a doofus who prides himself on being the company’s fastest sorter but dreams of being promoted to floor manager; n Cindy (Mila Kunis), a sexy but sociopathic con artist who weasels her way into Joel’s factory with a scheme to make money off a serious accident; n Rory (T.J. Miller), a piercedand-tatted goth rocker who’s too busy handing out flyers for his latest show to do his job; and n Mary (Beth Grant), an assembly-line worker who complains in a nasally twang about everyone else slacking, even though she’s probably the least productive employee of all. As the person responsible for overseeing all these idiots and incompetents, Bateman functions in his patented exasperated everyman mode, similar to his Michael Bluth character on Arrested Development, only without the smart, surreal dialogue. Joel is proud of the company he founded but finds himself unhappy at work and thinking about selling to General Mills. At the same time, his nonexistent sex life with his frosty wife Suzie (a thoroughly underused Kristen Wiig) at his Texas McMansion has him pondering adulterous thoughts about the flirty Cindy.

His best friend Dean (Ben Affleck), a suave bartender at a generic hotel sports grill, suggests that Joel hire a gigolo (Dustin Milligan) to sleep with Suzie, thereby giving him license to cheat on her with Cindy. With his Kenny G haircut and canned mysticism, Dean is probably the most outlandish character of all. But he provides just the latest example of Affleck’s ability to breeze into a movie in some flashy supporting part, steal the scenes he’s in and breeze back out again. On the other end of the freakshow spectrum is Nathan (David Koechner), Joel’s nerdy neighbor from across the street who keeps hounding him and Suzie about attending the annual Rotary Club banquet with him. Over-the-top annoying as he is, Nathan feels more like a real person than pretty much everyone else in Extract. We all know someone like him: a guy who drags people into painfully boring conversations, hangs around too long and can’t take a hint to go away. The scenes between Bateman and Koechner are unbelievably cringeworthy but they also suggest the kind of movie Extract might have been if Judge had dared to throw in a little more flavor throughout, and not just relied on deadpan inanity.

At times like this, it’s good to think positive. That’s what Sandra Bullock’s socially inept crossword puzzle “constructor” does in All About Steve. So remember that Ms. Bullock staged a “comeback” with the summer smash The Proposal. Consider how good she looks. She can still weather big-screen close ups and, at 45, can still pass for 35. But she can’t pass for 30. And she’s never been that good in dizzy, “out there” roles. She might have learned that lesson with 1999’s in Forces of Nature. Apparently not. All About Steve, an unfunny, annoying, badly written, badly acted comic fiasco, may be the worst movie in Bullock’s career. The screenwriter of License to Wed and an unheralded director with only a few forgettable TV sitcom credits serve up Bullock as a lonely word-freak, a smart, pretty woman still living with her parents in Sacramento, fretting over the once-a-week crossword puzzle she writes for the local newspaper. Mary chatters incessantly, is awkward around guys and blurts out her desire for sex at the drop of a hint. A blind date with a certain Steve (Bradley Cooper) has her trot out her sequined miniskirt, her favorite red go-go boots and her getlucky red bra. Darned if in the middle of jumping Steve, 45 seconds into their date, he isn’t summoned to work. He’s a network TV news photographer and he is more than happy to bolt this scary date. But Mary Magdalene Horowitz (Jewish Catholic, which explains nothing) has all this trivia at her fingertips and Steve as her latest puzzle. Literally. She whips up a crossword that’s all “Steve” clues. She reads the “signs” he has given her and sets out to be with him, because a relationship is like a crossword puzzle — “The worst thing you can do is leave it unfinished.” The only laughs in this road accident of a road picture come through the dulcet tones of Steve’s on-air “talent,” reporter Hartman Hughes, played by the peerless Thomas Haden Church. He’s sexist and mean enough to lead Mary on just to anger Steve. Mary’s cross-country pursuit isn’t funny, but then again, Mary isn’t funny. It’s rare that one actually feels sorry for a gorgeous, rich movie star. But Bullock earns our pity here. Mary is a miscalculation in almost every way, and the movie around her is worse — unfunny cameos, good actors wasted, bad actors given face time for no apparent reason.

Judge puts ‘Office’ flavor into ‘Extract’ By Michael Cavna The Washington Post

Mike Judge planned to step out of the office only briefly. Instead, he disappeared from his desk for a decade. Back in 1999, Judge — the creator of such immortal animated characters as Beavis, Butt-head and Hank Hill — attempted his first live-action feature film, based on his own workplace experience. Judge’s hot streak suddenly came to a halt: His cubicle-life comedy Office Space — given little hype or studio “flair” — flopped at the box office, prompting Fox execs to tell him, in effect: You’re talented, but maybe this live-action comedy isn’t quite your thing. Bummed, Judge shelved his prospective follow-up film — Extract, another workplace comedy, but one that traded in the white collars for blue. “I was already writing Extract when Office Space came out,” he recalls. But a funny thing happened

on the way back to the animation studio: Slowly, fans turned Office Space into a hit, as Milton, Lumbergh and the Bobs became increasingly noted and quoted. Judge was redeemed. And the long-mothballed Extract finally hits theaters on Friday. During the Office Space shoot, Judge says, “I thought: ‘I was born to do this.’ But when it came out and didn’t do so well, I thought: ‘I was born to do something that no one wants to see.’ ” Now, as Extract star Mila Kunis, says of the celebrated office satire, “it gets better every time you watch it.” That success finally brought the filmmaker back to the workplace, with his factory-set comedy that also stars Jason Bateman and Ben Affleck. “I think of Extract almost as a companion piece to Office Space, ” says the filmmaker, speaking a couple of days after the new movie’s red-carpet premiere in Austin. Thanks largely to Office

Space, Kunis needed no prodding to work with Judge. “I’ve been a fan of his for a long time,” says Kunis, the former That ’70s Show actress. In returning to workplace humor, Judge found that the joy of filmmaking — the feeling he had during Office Space — was recaptured. “Things become funner as they go along,” says Judge, whose King of the Hill ends its 12-year run in September. “I’m getting back to what I was doing with Office Space. I just could keep going with this — when everything is working.” With Office Space and Extract, “I think casting is 80 percent of the battle, and we got people who understand the purpose of each scene,” says Judge, who values his actors’ improvisations. dvd previews Earth You may have seen the television ads for this debut documentary feature from Disney about the struggles of three animal families (polar bear, elephant and whale) to survive against the elements. They are the ads that begin “Wherever there is life, there are stories.” That’s really what this movie is: a gorgeously photographed storybook. It starts with a mother polar bear and her two cubs in Norway, moves to equatorial Africa for a look at a herd of elephants searching for water and ends with the journey of a humpback whale and her calf to Antarctica. In between, there’s plenty of jawdropping cinematography of waterfalls, icebergs, meadows and mountains, along with byturns funny and spectacular footage of birds of paradise, sailfish, caribous, wolves and a Mandarin duck or two, among others. Contains scenes of animals in peril and less-thangraphic violence.

State of Play Taking some cues from such

recent headlines as Chandra Levy and Blackwater, not to mention All the President’s Men, the film plays politicians and journalists against each other in a continually shifting game of back-scratching and back-stabbing. Congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck), a rising political star, is caught up in a scandal that may or may not have anything to do with a string of murders being investigated by Washington Globe reporter Cal McAffrey (Russell Crowe). Caught in the middle is a plucky young blogger played by Rachel McAdams, who teams up with McAffrey to get to the bottom of events that spin more and more improbably out of control. The film features terrific performances from its aforementioned stars; Helen Mirren has some especially choice moments as Cal’s vinegary editor. But the filmmakers seem less interested in its text than in its subtext, in this case the death rattle of Old Media. ‘Ghostbusters’ game relives the movies upgrades. The graphics are so-so and have the unfortunate effect of making all the main characters slightly creepy looking, even if it is nice to hear Dan Akroyd and Bill Murray. The plot is just a convenient vehicle to put the characters in similar situations as the movies. Take down the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man? Recapture Slimer in a hotel? Been there, trapped that. It could just be that there’s not much juice left in this silly little story to make it worth our time. But people who are seeking the nostalgia factor should be pleased. I just would prefer to grow up. Ghostbusters gets three buttons out of five.

Marvel-Disney merger No, Disney buying Marvel does not mean Spider Man will be wearing mouse ears, or that Wolverine will appear on The Jonas Brothers. (Oh please, oh please.) The company owns plenty of “adult” properties including Miramax Films, makers of Pulp Fiction. For cryin’ out loud, Pulp Fiction! They also own ESPN, so they can’t be all bad. There’s also this funny thing that’s happening with

print media these days. Using sites like YouTube, people can get their entertainment by watching a girl in a clown mask slam her head against a television set while dancing to “Single Ladies.” Comic books, while fun to read, aren’t necessarily the most popular form of entertainment out there. In order to keep an audience, companies like Marvel have to reach people where they are most likely to consume its products. Disney is one of the largest media companies in the world. Marvel is about to get paid. Don’t hate on Marvel for making a smart business decision. Remember, the company filed for bankruptcy in the ’90s. Messing with the characters would be a dumb business decision for Disney. To close out this ditty, I’ll do a fancy Mickey Mouse Club-inspired sing-along send-off for people who are concerned about the merger. Make way for the amazing Spider-Mouse. In an entertainment-industry stunner, the Walt Disney Co. announced Monday that it was buying comic-book giant Marvel Enterprises for $4 billion. The purchase will give the house of Mickey Mouse access to about 5,000 characters in the Marvel Universe — Spider-Man, Iron Man, the X-Men, the Hulk and more — which in recent years have leaped off the printed page to prove immensely popular with moviegoers. Industry insiders say the deal also was a clear effort by Disney to strengthen its appeal to young men who might be lukewarm to the studio’s family-friendly and tweener fare of the Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana. “It’s extraordinary news. I’m still reeling,� said Leonard Maltin, the Entertainment Tonight correspondent whose book The Disney Films is considered a definitive look at the studio’s output. “Disney has never been in the superhero business. So this is a quantum leap in terms of their potential audience and their traditional branding.� Many Marvel fans, however, weren’t ready to replace their ages-old battle cry of “Make Mine Marvel!� to “Make Mine Mickey!� Instead, they took to Internet message boards and fan sites to declare the death of Marvel Comics. Marvel’s editor in chief, Joe Quesada, told fans on Twitter to chill. “This is incredible news and all is well in the Marvel U(niverse),� Quesada wrote. “... If you’re familiar with the Disney/ Pixar relationship, then you’ll understand why this is a new dawn for Marvel and the comics industry.� While many details of the stock-and-cash deal are still emerging, Disney has said it will honor Marvel Entertainment’s commitments to other film studios. characters,� said Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter. “This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organization and infrastructure.� Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger said that “adding Marvel to Disney’s unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation.� He added that Perlmutter’s team will continue to oversee the creation and handling of Marvel

characters. Maltin said it makes sense for Disney to hang on to the people who have brought Marvel so far. “A large part of what they’re buying is that Marvel name and reputation — I can’t imagine they want to dilute that,� Maltin said. “I don’t think you’ll see the Marvel name diminished in any way. I can’t imagine Disney would try to micromanage Marvel’s business. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Disney name is inconspicuous on future Marvel projects.� Jason Aaron, who writes comic books that feature Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost Rider, said the company has operated outside of a strict corporate structure, giving writers and creators a lot of freedom in the stories they tell. “Coming out of the blue like this announcement did, you have concerns about whether it will affect what I do,� Aaron said. “It’s always been more fly by the seat of your pants. You wonder if this will change things. But everyone I’ve talked to at Marvel is really excited about the deal. They don’t feel it will change what we do. And the idea of Pixar people doing stuff with Marvel characters is really interesting.� Other observers were dubious that Disney could keep a handsoff approach. “This is indicative of the larger consolidation going on in the entertainment industry,� said comic-book author and film producer Jeff Katz (X-Men Origins: Wolverine). “This is only going to continue, and you’ll see other major moves like this. Our entertainment-content universe is shrinking while distribution is expanding.� For several years Disney distributed the animated films created by the independent studio Pixar, finally purchasing Pixar in 2006 for more than $7 billion. That move re-energized Disney, which now lays claim to Pixar talent, its characters and the brand’s soaring popularity. Moreover, Pixar Chief Executive John Lasseter took over the studio’s animation division, not only launching new computer-animation projects but reviving the studio’s traditional hand-drawn animation.

James giving back with Super Saturdays By Ben Flanagan Special to The Star

Rod James wants great things for Anniston. He wants people to make this town a primary destination for entertainment events, and he’s doing his part to make that happen. As president of the Historic Downtown Anniston Business Association, James developed Super Saturdays, a food and music festival held on Noble Street on the third Saturday of each month. In July, James and his organization held an inaugural blues and barbecue festival where several live bands played and residents submitted their recipes to be judged by local celebrities. James saw the biggest crowd yet at that Super Saturday, perhaps thanks to a performance by Benny Anderson and the Sounds of the Drifters. Whatever got people there — be it the souped-up car engines, rock bands or hometown cuisine — it pleased James, who thinks the event can only grow from here. But he still thinks the arts community could improve and become something truly significant, especially if more residents involve themselves in the planning process. James talks to The Star about his own efforts and what it will take to continue Anniston’s growth in the arts. Are you pleased with Super Saturdays’ performance so far? I’m absolutely pleased. They continue to grow. We had the biggest crowd ever on the streets of (July’s) Super Saturday. As a matter of fact, prior to the concert, I was going to take my wife and drive her through to see all of the vendors and the cars. We finally had to turn around because there were so many people and we couldn’t get through. So I’m very pleased. Why is it important that events like these succeed in Anniston? We have some great things going on, like Music at McClellan and things of that nature. But there’s not something going on anywhere really on a consistent basis other than an annual type of event. So we feel that if we could just keep doing this and growing it, there could be the opportunity for several thousand people to be downtown at least once a month. It’s destination. It’s free. You can go down there and have a great time, eat some great food, see some awesome cars. There are a lot of kids activities and some great music. Where does Anniston stand in terms of what it has to offer arts and entertainment-wise? I think we’re lacking. We’ve definitely got room for more. We’ve got some great museums. Music at McClellan is awesome, but there’s not much else that people can go to. That’s another reason we want Super Saturdays to be successful. CAST is doing a great job out there with the plays and all. That’s always great entertainment. But there’s just not a lot. How can it improve? More people getting involved. I think more businesses getting involved. More volunteers, people willing to step

Other than Super Saturdays, what ways does the HDABA contribute to this area’s cultural offerings? As far as cultural, I don’t know, other than the music, that we are. But I guess if you look at what we’re doing with Super Saturdays, we are giving back to the community. With the HDABA, we’re here to promote each other’s businesses. We do a lot of free advertising for them. We help them get discounts with other companies, as far as like radio, TV and newspapers. It’s a great organization. I don’t know that we’re limited to just Super Saturday. I think if we can get it to where it needs to be, and it’s pretty much running itself with the manpower, there’s no telling what we could do, especially if we continue to grow in our membership. If we continue to be successful, we

could possibly even take on another project to bring more bands. How difficult is it to find performers, like The Drifters, that the town can afford and that will hopefully appeal to the majority of people who attend? The cost of that was shouldered by the HDABA. We wanted to provide a free concert, so we sold corporate tables and individual memberships to cover the cost of that. We’ve got people like Thomas Van Dyke on our board that are very tied to the music community. We ask them to take charge of that. Just having the right people that know the right people has contributed to our success. That frees me up to work on something else like raising money and things of that nature. The Drifters were a good group to bring in. I hope we can equal that or better.
