Goo, Goo Ga Joob, ladies in gentlemen. You’re about to hear me say something I wouldn’t have dreamed of saying a year ago. I want to buy “Rock Band.” “The Beatles: Rock Band,” to be exact. I’ve actually had the opportunity to play these kinds of games a few times. I’m still not convinced they’re anything more than glorified karaoke, but I think its value is bringing groups of people together. And what better way to come together than around a game that celebrates the Bea-

tles catalog, music so popular you almost forget who wrote it. So, yes, I’m contradicting myself. I want to play this game. Another game that I’m anxious to get my hands on is “Batman: Arkham Asylum.” The early press for this has been great and it’s not hard to see why. Writer Paul Dini basically transmutes every story he touches into gold, as fans of the show “Lost” can attest. But there’s more. Mark Hamill, better known as Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars,” reprises his popular turn as the joker and Kevin Conroy brings his A-talent to the voice of Batman. Yeah, it’s that good. Not to be outdone, “Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2” will make its debut in November and will put the original “Call of Duty Modern Warfare” to shame. I wasted a ridiculous amount of time playing the first “Modern Warfare.” Frankly, I haven’t seen a better online matching system since. If it’s even half as good as the first one they’ll have my attention. But I suspect developer Infinity Ward is pulling out all the stops and will give us a game that we’ll all be playing for a long time. I’ve been playing “Infamous” for the PlayStation 3. The story line and graphics are certainly engaging, but I haven’t found myself wanting to stop whatever I’m doing to go and pick it up. That’s the problem with being a video game columnist. You want to play everything, but you keep coming back to the things that really get your attention. “Infamous” is certainly better than you’d expect and probably one of the more overlooked games of the last year. Give it a try. You might find it more engrossing than I did.

NCAA 10 game surprisingly accurate We know a few things after the start of football season. Not the least of which is that “NCAA Football 10” is surprisingly accurate. How accurate? Prior to the Alabama-Virginia Tech game Saturday, the computerized version of the Tech team kept taking my lunch money. My biggest weakness: Dan special Whisenhunt teams Pushing Buttons play. Those blasted Hokies always managed to run at least one kickoff back for a touchdown. Against my beloved Crimson Tide? Impossible! Surely the folks at EA were exaggerating Coach Frank Beamer’s abilities. Then I saw the game Saturday and realized they weren’t kidding. So a big hats off to EA this week for nailing down the accuracy of Tech’s special teams play. Alas, they did not give the Alabama team the ability to shoot lasers out of their eyes to compensate for my poor coaching skills. Maybe next year.

Fans divided about Ellen DeGeneres as ‘Idol’ judge TV

LOS ANGELES — Ellen DeGeneres wants to represent the people on American Idol, but the people are split about the talk show host’s role as the Fox singing competition’s fourth judge. Fans took to the Internet after Wednesday’s announcement to express either pleasant surprise or total shock that DeGeneres was picked to replace Paula Abdul. “I mean, really? Ellen DeGeneres?” wrote popular Idol blogger MJ Santilli at mjsbigblog.com. “She guest judged So You Think You Can Dance last season, and her critiques were comic relief. degeneres So is she going to be a real judge or some kind of joke? She’s a comedian, not a singer or a musician. I’m kinda flummoxed here.” Others on the Internet, including posters on the AmericanIdol.com forums, said they were pleased that DeGeneres, who admittedly has no formal music experience, just a passion for tunes, would join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi on Idol. Andy Dehnart, a reality television blogger at realityblurred.com, praised the “somewhat random” decision. He called it a 90-degree turn that would give the aging singing contest new life and may prompt more viewers to tune in when DeGeneres first appears during the semifinal rounds, which tend to be the snooziest part of the season. “Hopefully, I’m the people’s point of view because I’m just like you,” DeGeneres said on her syndicated talk show Thursday. “I sit at home and I watch it, and I don’t have that technical ... I’m not looking at it in a critical way from the producer’s mind. I’m looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person.” DeGeneres’ hiring as the show’s fourth judge all but seals the departure of Abdul, the original third judge who announced she was quitting amid a contract dispute in July. Abdul had served as judge alongside Cowell and Jackson since the show’s debut in 2002. Producers shook up the franchise last season by adding songwriter DioGuardi as a fourth judge. It won’t be DeGeneres’ first time in a reality TV judge’s seat — or on Idol. She served as a guest judge earlier this summer on So You Think You Can Dance, critiquing the dancing competition’s top eight finalists. In 2007, she was the co-host of Idol Gives Back, the singing contest’s charity event. She returned the next year in a pre-taped segment. DeGeneres has enjoyed a successful reign as the host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show for the past six years, although her four-year streak as the Daytime Emmy winner for talk show host ended this year when Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Sherri Shepherd and Barbara Walters from ABC’s The View were awarded the prize for the first time.

McHale gets to show his acting chops in ‘Community’ By Luaine Lee McClatchy-Tribune News Service

PASADENA, Calif. — Actor Joel McHale made a deal with his wife when they arrived in Hollywood from his home state of Washington. “Give me five years and if things aren’t working in five years, I’ll know that I tried and I can go back to Seattle in peace,” he told her. “That five-year mark is now four years ago, thank God. So far so good,” the lanky McHale says in a deserted bar one late afternoon here. McHale is best known as the sarcastic host on E! Entertainment’s The Soup, a gig that he landed well before the five-year deadline and one that he hopes to keep. But there are even bigger challenges ahead for the former Husky tight-end. On Sept. 17 he premieres in Community, a hilarious new comedy from NBC co-starring Chevy Chase. It focuses on a group of misfits who meet at a community college and are corralled by McHale in a misfired attempt to snatch a degree while he romances a savvy coed. Though he’s known for his hosting duties, McHale says, “Acting was always in my brain. I was in a production of It’s a Small World in the second grade and it was one of those: ‘This feels good and comfortable and I really like it out here.’ Then I really started doing a lot of it, starting about the seventh grade.” The son of a retired executive head-hunter and real estate agent, McHale was no scholar. “I didn’t mind school, but I was never great at it because I always just thought, ‘Well, I’m not going to be doing this.’ I always thought, ‘Oh, this (acting) is so much fun. Do I have to get a REAL job at some point?’ I did nothing but sports in high school and college. I played football in college. I rode, I was a baseball player, soccer, tennis, but college football and high school basketball were my main thing.” He was offered an acting scholarship to Santa Clara College in San Jose, Calif., but refused it because he wanted to play football in Washington. “Also I felt the acting opportunity that I would have in Seattle would be better than this. San Jose was not the place where a lot of production was happening. I was doing enough industrial films and local ads, but I felt I could probably piece something together here so that’s why I didn’t take the scholarship. Ultimately the University of Washington was cheaper.” McHale met his wife, Sarah, one day when he was passing her sorority after football practice. “The next time was on this movie set of I think the worst film ever made in history. It was shot in two days. It was as bad as you can possibly imagine. I played an assassin and my future wife’s mother was an extra and her brother was a P.A. (production assistant). He introduced us and I called this mutual friend and said, ‘Is she available?’ And he said, ‘She’s not going to date you, but go ahead and try.”’ On their first date McHale escorted her to an Italian restaurant and for a romantic drink afterwards on Capitol Hill. I thought, ‘Eventually checks will be coming,’ so I almost maxed out my credit card courting her.” It must’ve worked. Two years later they were married. Fortunately for McHale, Sarah was true to her word. She mostly supported him as a graphic designer and interior decorator their first two years in Hollywood. About that he says, “The world of television and movies and Hollywood is so unpredictable. The only thing you can control is your part. It took me a long time to get to that point. Making it in Hollywood is a marathon, it’s not a sprint. It’s just like being a plumber or master craftsman; you have to keep working at it.” McHale, 37, is the father of two boys, ages 4 and 1. “The world came into focus with the birth of my children,” says McHale, who’s wearing a blue-andgray plaid shirt, gray tie and gray slacks. I thought, ‘Oh, life is not about filling up your days, it’s about something. That was one of the greatest moments of my life that was one of most mind blowing.” Another moment of change occurred when he was 17. “I started going to church. I was raised Catholic but then started going to a Presbyterian church and I was really into it. I just felt like something was missing, and I found it there.”

NEW YORK — When Jay-Z released his first Blueprint CD on Sept. 11, 2001, the rapper couldn’t have known how monumental, and tragic, the day would turn out to be. This week, Jay-Z is once again releasing an album with the Blueprint tag, but this time, the release of CD around the Sept. 11 date is not coincidental, but purposeful. The Blueprint 3, billed as the final album of a trilogy, is being paired with a special benefit concert on Sept. 11 at Madison Square Garden. It will benefit the families of police officers and firefighters who lost their lives when the World Trade Center’s twin towers collapsed in the terrorist attacks. Jay-Z feels the album — which features a myriad of guests including Kanye West, Rihanna and Alicia Keys — shows how he’s evolved to become one of hip-hop’s leaders. AP: Why do you feel this is the right time to release the third installment of Blueprint? Jay-Z: This album was actually supposed to come out last year, but for some reason it didn’t, and whatever happened and however we got to this place, we’re here now. So it just made sense for me to grasp the moment and make it a bigger thing because the first one wasn’t planned to come out on September 11, right? There was no “September 11.” We didn’t know that that tragic event would happen that day. So now with that knowledge, we should never forget and we should always move past it and

I’m proud of the album. AP: You announced your retirement in 2003. Since then, have you thought about retiring again? Jay-Z: I learned from that last one that you should just let it happen. The day that you’re not making music you should just not make music. It doesn’t have to be an announced retirement. So I would never say that again. Ever. AP: With your upcoming 9/11 benefit concert, do you think this could become an annual event where different performers could headline each year to raise money? Jay-Z: That’s a great idea. Anytime you do anything and it’s a good thing and if people choose to emulate that then, that’s fantastic.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Brad Paisley leads Country Music Association Award nominees with six nods announced Wednesday, while Taylor Swift snagged a nomination for entertainer of the year, the show’s highest honor. The 19-year-old Swift is the first female solo artist to be nominated for the top award since 2000. Swift joins Keith Urban, George Straight, Jamey Johnson and Zac Brown with four nominations each. The CMAs announced five categories on ABC’s Good Morning America, and the rest later in the morning on the CMT network. Swift’s CD Fearless has sold more than three million copies and made her the top-selling act in country and in pop. Her competitors in the top category are Kenny Chesney, Strait, Paisley, and Urban. She was also nominated for female vocalist of the year, along with Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire and Carrie Underwood. “To country music radio and the fans and anybody who voted for the CMAs this year, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you,” Swift said in a video posted on her MySpace page, counting out four ‘thank yous’ for each nomination. Darius Rucker was nominated for male vocalist of the year, along with veterans such as Strait, Paisley, Chesney and Urban. “It feels great. It feels like I’m part of the family,” said Rucker, who along with Lee Ann Womack announced the nominations on ABC. “I love being in country music because of the accessibility and the relationships you have with fans and with radio is awesome.” Rucker was also nominated for new artist of the year along with Randy Houser, Jamey Johnson, Jake Owen and the Zac Brown Band. Womack was another nominee Wednesday morning: Her song with George Strait, “Everything But Quits,” was nominated for vocal event of the year. Also nominated were “Cowgirls Don’t Cry,” by the soon-to-be disbanded Brooks & Dunn and McEntire; “I Told You So,” by Underwood and Randy Travis; “Down the Road” by Chensey and Mac McAnally; and “Old Enough,” by the rock group Racounteurs, Ricky Skaggs and Ashley Monroe. Houser, who announced the rest of the nominations on a live broadcast of CMT Insider from a Nashville studio, said getting the nomination for the new artist category is a honor he’s been patiently waiting on. “I’ve told myself for so many years, ‘Maybe next year, maybe next year,”’ said Houser, who also was nominated for his music video, “Boots On.” He credited his record label with coming up with the idea of the music video, which featured a toddler rocking out to his song on a toy guitar.

Phish’s new ‘Joy’ is strong, self-assured By JOSH L. DICKEY The finicky fans of Phish have never been much satisfied with the Vermont jamband’s studio offerings — if they were, they wouldn’t go to such extremes to catch the band live. Joy, the foursome’s first postreunion record, is one of the band’s strongest, most self-assured albums in more than a decade, the surest sign since the March reboot concerts in Hampton, Va., that Phish intends not just to hang around awhile, but to keep pushing onward and upward. Will Phish-heads take notice? It doesn’t matter. Months will pass, live versions of these tracks will integrate into the two-plus hour sets, and no matter what fans think now, jubilation will eventually erupt with the first strains of “Backwards Down the Number Line,” “Light,” “Sugar Shack” and “Time Turns Elastic,” four tunes off of Joy that stand out here as potential monsters in the Phish canon. As a whole, Joy is grounded, unfussy and songwriting-driven. This album is remarkable for its clarity and focus; through multiple listens, individual instruments shine within the

once a driving rocker in the vein of The Who — and vehicle for the most blindingly brilliant notes of vocal harmony that Phish has ever sung. “Backwards Down the Number Line” sweetly lauds lifetime friendships, and for good reason: Guitarist Trey Anastasio openly acknowledges

New Beatles product dazzling Associated Press Hard to believe that it’s been 40 years since the Beatles sang “You Never Give Me Your Money.” You had to expect at least one cheap shot, didn’t you? The Beatles’ remastered catalog and a dazzling coffee-table Box of Vision hits the market Wednesday, as most dedicated fans have known for months. Fanatics will line up, but for most people, a purchase decision is more likely to be financial than musical. Technicians at Apple Corps Ltd. spent four years cleaning up and giving a digital punch to the master recordings left behind by the Beatles. Each is available individually, as well as in a $259.98 box set that includes the band’s original discs, plus the Past Masters singles collection, 14 albums in all. Mini-documentaries are included for all but Past Masters. Also on sale is a $298.98 box of mono mixes for each album through the White Album; after that the music was only released in stereo. For those under age 50, mono has the same music coming through each speaker (stereo splits different parts of a track through different speakers) and was the dominant music system in homes until the late 1960s. At first, the Beatles devoted more attention to their mono mixes. The Box of Vision is an $89.98 package (plus

shipping — it’s only available by mail order) to fit all of the CDs with album-sized reprints of every album’s covers and liner notes — yet no actual CDs included. Do the math: it’s possible to spend upwards of $350 and receive not a single note of new music. Given that we’re in an era where artists have a hard time convincing fans they should pay for ANY music, that falls into the selling-iceto-Eskimos category. Despite that, despite the economy, Amazon.com sold out its allotment of boxes and has a waiting list of buyers. Since the albums contain no outtakes or alternate versions, the remaster is the attraction. The advice here is to arrange a test-drive: buy, or borrow, an individual disc ($18.98 list, $24.98 for the White Album and Past Masters) to see how much difference the sound makes before setting aside a few hundred bucks for one of the boxes. What is new here are mini-documentaries on DVD, about three minutes apiece, on each album. They feature interviews with band members and producer George Martin, seemingly left over from the Beatles Anthology days, and some studio banter. They’re all fun and occasionally enlightening. Starr described the lengthy studio sessions for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by saying, “It’s a fine album, but I did learn to play chess on it.”

that the song is a reflection of the band’s delicate but dedicated internal dynamic, and the tone is purely sentimental without being cloying. It’s an anthem to the bonds among Phish followers as much as it is to Phish itself, and it works. “Time Turns Elastic,” clocking in at some 13 minutes, is the band’s first full-out prog-rock odyssey since “Guyute” from 1998’s “Story of the Ghost,” four records ago. Heavy, plodding and ponderous at points, the thing is actually loaded with delightful rewards along the way, then lands squarely on its feet; like traversing a twisty and treacherous stretch of road, it’s a journey worth suffering a few times — being that it becomes quite a thrill once you get the lay of the land. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: “Party Time” is the title track of a bonus disc that’s available with the deluxe box set of Joy; this “second album” contains 13 tracks of outtakes, live recordings and songs that didn’t make the album. It wasn’t made available in time for critical review, but the rowdy, mostly instrumental jam killed on the band’s ’09 summer tour, sending fans who’ve never heard it into dancing pandemonium.

LOS ANGELES — Despite their roughhewn appearance, the resourceful rag dolls in 9 obviously were crafted with great love and care, both by the scientist who made them in the film and the mastermind behind them in real life, director Shane Acker. If only as much complex thought had gone into the script. The animation is so breathtaking in its originality, so weird and wondrous in its detail, you wish there were more meat to the screenplay from Pamela Pettler, who previously wrote Monster House. Based on Acker’s animated short of the same name, which was nominated for an Oscar in 2006, 9 follows a group of creatures who represent the last vestige of humanity in a post-apocalyptic world. It’s set in the future after a war between mankind and machines but eerily resembles Europe after World War II, with its sepia tones blanketing the decimated surroundings in danger and fear. (Parents, don’t be fooled: It may look like a cute and clever cartoon, but 9 is genuinely frightening.) 9 (voiced by Elijah Wood) awakens to find no people are left, but there are a few others like him: tiny, fabric dolls stitched together coarsely but sturdily, with lenses for eyes. (As in WALL-E, the eyes convey a lot more emotion than you might imagine.) It’s easy to see why Tim Burton was drawn to 9 and

wanted to help get it made as a producer, along with Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov: the mixture of darkness and whimsy, the childlike and the fantastic, is reminiscent of Burton’s signature aesthetic. And yet, Acker has a vision all his own. The dolls have numbers on their backs signifying who they are and the order in which they were created. They include 1 (Christopher Plummer), the priestly, rigid leader; 2 (Martin Landau), an aging but feisty inventor; 5 (John C. Reilly), who’s loyal but afraid of everything; and 7 (Jennifer Connelly), a brave and butt-kicking warrior. Appropriately, Crispin Glover provides the voice of the group’s misfit artist, 6. There are also 3 and 4, mute twins who are experts on history, and the brutish 8 (Fred Tatasciore), who looks like the Michelin Man and serves as 1’s enforcer. From there, 9 follows an episodic, almost video game-like format. The curious 9 picks up an ornate piece of metal, sticks it in a corresponding hole and inadvertently jump-starts a villainous contraption composed of a giant red eye at the center and myriad metal tentacles. He and the other dolls must then scurry for their lives — even though they don’t yet know the whole story of their purpose on this planet — as a series of equally menacing monsters tries to pick them off, one by one. About halfway in, you realize how thin this expanded story really is, even though it’s always dazzling to watch. It’s intense and nearly relentless, except for a brief respite in which 9 pays a lovely homage to The Wizard of Oz. Acker isn’t taking us over the rainbow, but he has brought us someplace daring and new, and he makes you anxious to see what other destinations he has in mind.

HOLLYWOOD — Walt & El Grupo is the best kind of labor of love. A documentary made with affection and intelligence, it looks at a brief episode in the life of a cultural icon and uses it to illuminate what turns out to be a telling moment in time and in the process shed some light on the man himself. That man, as the title indicates, was Walt Disney. But this is not the avuncular elder statesman of the later Disneyland years. This was Disney not yet 40, a youthful, vibrant man with black hair and piercing eyes, a man capable of entering a room walking on his hands and saying “Hola, chicos!” The reason that greeting was in Spanish is that for nearly 10 weeks in 1941 Disney, his wife, Lillian, and 16 key employees went on a trip to South America that was part goodwill tour and part research for future Disney films. One of those 16 was animator Frank Thomas, one of the studio’s legendary “Nine Old Men” and the father of Walt & El Grupo’s writer-director, Theodore Thomas, whose previous work includes Frank and Ollie, a charming portrait of his father and his longtime friend Ollie Johnston. Working with his producing partner Kuniko Okubo, Theodore Thomas has, in effect, engaged in a kind of cinematic archaeology, retracing the Disney group’s footsteps, interviewing descendants of the travelers and those who remember the trip, and digging into archives to come up with letters, drawings, photographs and even color home movies that, taken together, re-create the excitement of an expedition that turned out to have more significance for the Disney organization than anyone anticipated. The trip came at a particularly difficult time for Disney and his young company. After revolutionizing the animation marketplace with the success of Snow White, Disney got into financial trouble for building a new studio while revenues from a Europe at war and from new features, including Pinocchio and Fantasia, were dropping. Disney also had a war of his own to contend with, a bitter animators’ strike that was a factor in his calling this time “the toughest period in my life.” Disney’s South American trip turned out to be the rare goodwill tour that actually created goodwill. It’s fascinating to see and hear, more than half a century later, how excited everyone was to have him visit, especially the schoolchildren in Uruguay who were given a half day off from school.

They should put Wite-Out on the script and try again. It has been a while since we have seen a misfire on the scale of Whiteout. This Antarctic cop story flows like molasses in January, its plodding pace underscoring the cast’s lack of chemistry, the monotonous visuals and TV-level plotting. Trading her sexy shrink-wrap latex outfit from the Underworld series for a hooded winter coat, Kate Beckinsale plays Carrie Stetko, a U.S. marshal investigating the continent’s first recorded murder. The deceased, who seems to have fallen from a mountainside but had no climbing gear, is what they call “a sticker.” He’s fixed to the surface of the ice when Carrie discovers him, a frozen, inert mass. A symbol for the movie, you might say. The film takes its title from the weather condition that whips blinding white show so furiously that you can’t see six inches in front of you. No horizon, no shadows, only white. Those are the conditions that many of the story’s chase scenes are shot in, and when several figures in looka-

like parkas are moving in slow motion against a snow-gusting, undefined background, the tension suffers. Dominic Sena, director of the frantic Gone in Sixty Seconds, seems to have misplaced his action chops. He opens the film with one of the most uninvolving airplane crashes ever recorded on film. That accident, involving a Russian cargo plane carrying Something Important during the Cold War, sets the plot in motion. The corpse Carrie finds is part of a plot to recover its contents. At the same time, she is working to recover her confidence. She came to the South Pole from Miami, where she was attacked by a prisoner in her custody, with damaging effect to her career and her psyche. We know that the scars are deep because Sena helpfully replays the incident a half dozen times. He also highlights important events by filming them with a slow zoom-in, the movie equivalent of underlining a sentence in red ink. Beckinsale’s one moment of comedy comes early, and unintentionally. She’s barely been introduced before she gives a nod to her Underworld fan base by stripping off her goose-down burka and stepping into a steamy shower. She’s interrupted by a knock at the door and shouts “Just a minute.” She doesn’t add, “I’m doing the gratuitous skin scene,” but she might as well have.

dvd previews The Country Teacher Two-thirds of the way into The Country Teacher we see country-bumpkin mom Marie, a weathered, loveless woman with loose red pigtails and overalls, cleaning up a vomitsplattered floor. We get the feeling that quite a few of the characters in Czech director Bohdan Slama’s latest film have been wiping up vomit all their lives. When a young schoolteacher, Peter (Pavel Liska, a Slama regular), from Prague comes to teach the backwoods local kids, Peter and Marie become fast friends, distracting each other from their loneliness. The Country Teacher ambles along like a herd of anxious cattle. Despite all the pain and self-loathing of its wounded characters, it’s a pretty, heartwarming picture that tells us everybody needs somebody to help shatter that ol’ boulder for good, and maybe clean up some vomit along the away. Contains adult themes and two calf birthings.

Valentino: The Last Emperor The legendary fashion designer Valentino Garavani glides through the movie in expensive suits and with the facial expression of one who has just smelled unwashed feet. Accompanied almost everywhere by his silver-haired business partner and ex-boyfriend, Giancarlo Giammetti, and a retinue of five Shar-Peis, he’s given to making such pronouncements as “An evening gown that reveals a woman’s ankles while she’s walking is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen.” It’s not surprising, though, given the fact that Valentino created, during a 45-year run in the rag biz that lasted until his retirement from fashion in 2007, what Giammetti calls “a world unto himself.” Calling him the last emperor may be hyperbolic, but he certainly is the last of a breed. Contains a bit of crude language and brief toplessness. Includes deleted scenes and extra footage. — The Washington Post

The 25 best football movies ever: Pigskin classics that even non-fans can love

Football isn’t just a matter of life and death for some people. It’s way more important than that. In the purgatory that football fans refer to as the period between the last second of the Super Bowl and the first kickoff of the next football season, fans have been known to do some pretty strange things. For instance, they will feign interest in baseball. They will spend time with their families. Some might even read a book ... about football. None of these activities, however, truly fills the void left by the absence of football. The only proven way to kill time before the start of football season is to watch a movie about football. The next best thing to watching football on TV is watching a football movie on TV. A really good football movie even can ease the pain of Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the season. Those are the dark days after Monday Night Football, and before Thursday Night Football. College football began this week, and the National Football League’s regular season kicks off Thursday, so I thought you might want to jot down a list of my favorite football movies. 1. The Longest Yard (1974): Any of the top four films on this list could have been No. 1, but this is the movie that can be watched over and over again. Sheer entertainment value scores six points for this Burt Reynolds classic. 2. Friday Night Lights (2004): Before there was a pretty hot TV series, there was this excellent Peter Bergdirected movie about an orthodox religious sect called Texas high school football. 3. North Dallas Forty (1979): If you were to send me a nasty e-mail about not putting this at the top of the list, I would not put up much of an argument. I love this movie, but gave it a five-yard penalty

Remember the Titans (2000): Denzel Washington stars as a high school football coach who fights bigotry in the South. 5. Everybody’s All-American (1988): Director Taylor Hackford’s saga of a football hero (Dennis Quaid) and his homecoming queen wife (Jessica Lange) who try to adjust to life outside the college spotlight. He is good in the role, but she truly is his better half. 6. Brian’s Song (1971): I never cried. I never cried. I never cried. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. This film ranks high on this list despite its diminished status as a made-for-television movie. 7. Rudy (1993): Ru-dee, Rudee, Ru-dee, Ru-dee, Ru-dee, Ru-dee, Ru-dee. 8. Heaven Can Wait (1978): OK, it doesn’t have the look and feel of a football movie, and Warren Beatty isn’t a physically imposing athlete, but he’s got a quarterback’s pretty face and he gets the girl. Therefore, it qualifies as a realistic football movie.

9. Lucas (1986): You might not be familiar with this film, but it’s a worthy coming-ofage story about a bright high school dweeb (Corey Haim) who falls for a girl who prefers the studly football player played by Charlie Sheen. 10. Invincible: This would be rated at the top of the list in Philadelphia because it’s a real-life story about a guy from the neighborhood who wins a spot on the Philadelphia Eagles after new coach Dick Vermeil holds open auditions as a publicity stunt. 11. The Best of Times (1986): Ron Shelton (”Bull Durham”) wrote this film about a hapless former wide receiver (Robin Williams) who has spent 20 years trying to live down dropping the winning pass in the big game. 12. Jerry Maguire (1996): Oscar showed Cuba Gooding Jr. the money. They had me at “The human head weighs eight pounds.” 13. We Are Marshall (2006): Matthew McConaughey plays the courageous coach who picked up the whistle after the 1970 plane crash that wiped

out the Marshall University football team. 14. Varsity Blues: Ali Larter in a whipped-cream bikini. I’m not proud. 15. Knute Rockne All American (1940): Future President Ronald Reagan campaigned for his team to “win just one for the Gipper” in this film about the famed Notre Dame coach. 16. Black Sunday (1977): Director John Frankenheimer’s thriller about terrorists at the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, the subject matter

isn’t outdated 32 years later. 17. Little Giants (1994): Rick Moranis and Ed O’Neill play competitive brothers who use Pop Warner football teams as surrogates to wage their sibling rivalry. 18. M*A*S*H (1970): OK, it’s not a football movie, but football plays an important role, and it was the first football movie to introduce syringes into the sport. 19. Paper Lion (1968): Alan Alda portrays writer George Plimpton, who played with the Detroit Lions for a book. 20. Semi-Tough (1977): Loved the book; didn’t love the movie. But it deserves a look when you’ve got absolutely nothing else to do for a couple of hours. 21. All the Right Moves (1983): A young actor named Tom Cruise plays a high school football player who squares off with his coach. 22. Johnny Be Good (1988): I keep trying to hate this movie with the miscast Anthony Michael Hall as the star quarterback, but the subject matter (college recruiting) is serious enough to make it worth a viewing. 23. Wildcats (1986): Goldie Hawn plays a football coach. OK, whatever. 24. Leatherheads (2008): A look at professional football’s growing pains during the 1920s. 25. Horse Feathers (1932): The most realistic football footage in Hollywood history. I’m kidding. It’s the Marx Brothers.

TORONTO — You would think doubling a film’s chances for an Academy Award nomination would thrill everyone in Hollywood, where an Oscar is the highest form of ego-stroking in a town of big egos. Yet attitudes among stars, filmmakers and executives range from cautious optimism to harsh disagreement over the big change at next March’s Oscars: 10 best-picture nominees instead of the usual five. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is experimenting with the expanded slate as Oscar organizers hope to stoke more interest in the awards show and spread the prestige around to different kinds of films. It’s not without precedent. From 1931 to 1943, the academy generally had 10 best-picture contenders, and as many as 12 some years. Since then, though, it’s been only five. Many in Hollywood wonder if doubling the field will cheapen the honor of scoring a nomination for the biggest prize in show business. “I think it’s terrible. My knee-jerk reaction is that it’s a really bad idea. We’ll see, but I think 10 just dilutes it too much,” said Matt Damon, an Oscar winner for the Good

Because to be nominated for best film is obviously an incredible honor,” said Peter Jackson, whose The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King swept the 2003 Oscars. If it’s the same honor with double the number of nominees, I’m not sure. I don’t know. I guess time will tell.” Academy officials say they would not mind seeing the occasional documentary or foreign-language film score a best-picture nomination. But the switch to 10 nominees mainly springs from Oscar planners’ efforts to popularize the show amid generally declining TV ratings over the last 25 years, as smaller, sober dramas have come to dominate instead of big studio productions. Lighter films occasionally sneak in — the road-trip romp Little Miss Sunshine or the pregnancy comedy Juno. Yet the best-picture lineup most often fills up with broody films such as last year’s The

Reader, Frost/Nixon and Milk — critical but not commercial triumphs. “It used to be actually that very big box-office movies tended to be the ones that win,” said Chris Weitz, director of this fall’s vampire sequel The Twilight Saga: New Moon and a 2002 Oscar nominee for the About a Boy screenplay. “Studios are now spending money on things they see as giant blockbusters rather than necessarily spending a lot of money on big historical epics that might do well at the Oscars.” The best ratings in recent times have come when huge hits such as Titanic or The Return of The King won best picture.

Persistence pays for musician Billy Currington By JOHN GEROME Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Billy Currington isn’t crazy, but he is persistent. Currington, whose No. 1 hit “People are Crazy” delivered him two Country Music Association Awards nominations this week, heard a demo tape of the song by chance, fell in love with it and started bugging a friend at Mercury Nashville about it. “I called him up and said ‘Tell me about this song,”’ Currington recalled. “He said ‘That song has already been recorded and 10 people are waiting in line who want currington to record it, so don’t even worry about it.”’ But Currington did worry about it. Three or four weeks later, when it came time to go

into the studio, he couldn’t get the simple tune with the engaging story off his mind and decided to give it one last shot. “I called him up again and asked for the status, and he let me know that the person who recorded it wasn’t going to put it on their album. The publishing company said if I wanted to record it, go ahead.” Currington doesn’t know — or isn’t telling — who recorded the song first, but he says the list of singers he was told were interested included Alan Jackson, George Strait and Kenny Chesney. Written by Bobby Braddock and Troy Jones, “People are Crazy” is about a young man who meets an older gentleman at a bar and gleans some wisdom from him about life (“God is great, beer is good and people are crazy”). Time passes, and one day the young guy sees the man’s obituary in the newspaper and discovers that he was a millionaire who “left his fortune to some guy he barely knew.” The song draws to a close with Currington singing,

“I drop by today just to say thanks and pray, and I left a six pack right there on his grave.” “The title alone was enough for me,” says Currington. “But it was also the story itself and how lighthearted it was and how at the end it had a twist that would be hard not to make anybody smile. Who wouldn’t want to meet a guy like that one night and end up with his fortune?” The song could end up Currington’s fortune. It’s his fourth No. 1 hit and the fastest-rising single of his career. On Wednesday, Currington was nominated for single of the year and video of the year for “People Are Crazy.” The songwriters got a nod for song of the year. Currington’s other big hits include “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right,” “Good Directions” and “Don’t.” “It’s a slow process and it gets better every year,” the 35-year-old Rincon, Ga., native says of his growing popularity. “I like it that way because I’m a fan of anything that goes slow. I’m as laid back as anyone you’ll ever meet.”

McClellan’s Wild West showdown CAST opens 10th season with ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ By Deirdre Long dlong@annistonstar.com

Community Actors’ Studio Theater is starting off the season with a bang. Their production of Annie Get Your Gun is filled not only with gunplay, but catchy songs, flashy costumes and rousing dance numbers. This version of the hit Broadway musical opened Thursday at the JSU/McClellan Theatre and runs through Nov. 20. Annie Get Your Gun is the fictionalized tale of sharpshooter Annie Oakley and her time with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, where she falls in love with another sharpshooter, Frank Butler. “They love each other, fight each other and live scrappily ever after,” said Kim Dobbs, artistic director for CAST. “They have their romance but they have their fights.”

The music, written by Irving Berlin, includes wellknown show tunes such as “Anything You Can Do” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business.” “I think that this show may have more hit songs in it than any musical we’ve done, other than Sound of Music,” said Mike Stedham, president of the CAST board of directors and Pawnee Bill in the musical. “It’s just full of great show tunes. With an opening like ‘There’s No Business Like Show Business’ and the way Kim’s staged it, it will blow the roof off.” Annie Get Your Gun is a large production with a lot of songs, which is the way Judy Shealy, who plays the title role of Annie, likes it. Shealy played Mrs. Lovett earlier this year in Jacksonville State University’s production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. “When there’s more people involved it gives the show more energy,” the 27-year-old nursing student said. “It’s a spectacle, it has a lot of personality.” She also enjoys playing a character more like her — “not too girly and a little brassy. And not very graceful.” This marks the 10th season for CAST, and the sixth

New gallery opens in Jacksonville By Ben Flanagan

The problem is in regions like this where you have artists who perhaps aren’t as well off or don’t have access to technologies. There’s more and more public computers available like at the library. The students have to learn how to do their stuff and have a strong digital portfolio when they leave so that they can be as competitive as possible. It’s made things a lot more accessible.

Jauneth Skinner is a self-proclaimed Air Force brat. A Texas native, she says she’s lived practically everywhere. After stops in Minnesota, Indiana and some metropolitan areas she’s landed in Jacksonville and managed to stay for a while. The Jacksonville State University art department head doesn’t have a Southern drawl, but she’s picked up “y’all” along the way. Skinner opened Gallery9, a gallery and printmaking shop, Thursday in the old Jacksonville Mortgage Company building on the square. As an artist, Skinner’s work has been published and exhibited in several national and international juried festivals. She has another gallery of her own in Chicago. Her specialty involves traditional printmaking with digital technologies and commercial printing processes to create limited edition prints. She says they are etchings, relief prints, handmade books and handmade paper. She also does monotypes, portraits and drawings. Skinner talks to The Star about new technologies’ role in modern art, traditional artists’ frustration with it and the importance of teaching children about all kinds of art forms. You’re still relatively new to this area. What’s your impression of Calhoun County’s arts scene? I think that there are a lot of artists kind of hiding out in the woods and mountains and foothills, and they’re making stuff. Because I work at the university, I run into artists at the university, and there’s a really strong network of alumni from the art department at JSU that still get together. They’re out there making stuff. I think we can have a really viable arts corridor here, not to mention the stuff they do out in McClellan. This studio collaborative, part of the thing is to have artists together in a community but specifically people who want access to the kind of heavyweight toys I have. These artists that have joined me, we have this nice community, we have some things we’ll be doing, but we’re also going to do some educational stuff and probably going to have some classes for kids. It seems like everybody I’ve talked to is like, ‘Will you do some classes for some kids?’ So I sense a hunger for the arts and an interest in the arts here. What do you tell your students at JSU

How do you think new technologies generate or support the emergence and realization of new concepts from artists? There was a huge debate about computer art being the death of photography and painting. Of course, photography was going to be the death of painting in art historical terms. Everybody was moaning and groaning, and photographers were going to take over the world. Well, they didn’t. They just became another medium for expression. I feel like the computers are the same thing. They are not going to kill painting. They are not going to kill photography even though photography’s going more digital. I don’t think it’s going to kill any of those things. I use both. I get hungry for real paper, the smell of ink, the feel of getting my hands dirty, the textures of things that I can create with a copper plate and that I can’t do with a computer. I can imitate it. When you print it out, looks pretty nice, but it’s not the same thing. The work I create on the computer is kind of its own thing. They all inform one another.

We have some pretty interesting heartto-heart talks. It’s pretty hard in the United States to make a living as a full-time artist. There are a few stars at the top of the heap that make a living, and they tend to live in big urban areas like New York, L.A. or Chicago. Those are pretty much the top places to be if you want to be an artist. I know there’s really vibrant stuff going on, but it’s just not necessarily published. So it might be Birmingham or Atlanta. I tell my

students I think some of the most creative and innovative work is done outside those metroplexes because you’re not as influenced by the market there, and because usually they have to find a different way to support themselves. They’ve got one foot in what I call the real world that keeps you grounded, and they’re in the other part of their world making art. What role do digital technologies play in today’s art world? Have they become standard? They’ve made it much more accessible.

Do you think technological advances frustrate traditional artists, or do they just carry on with their own forms? There’s a huge debate in the print world that might highlight it a bit. I would say a lot of traditional artists who love oil painting are very frustrated by how much money we can throw at technology. On the other hand, nothing’s changed in painting except for the advent of the new water-based oil paints. In printmaking and photography, there’s a whole digital component now. In the printmaking world, you have the old traditional printmakers that are into craftsmanship, the meticulous work that it takes. It’s a long, long process to create a print and to addition it. Then there’s the digital print, which mixes it up, and I’ll add quite a bit. There’s a lot of crossover, like a hybrid kind of form. The younger people embrace it all and do it all, and they don’t see any reason not to. We’re trying to encourage them to do hand skills because it enhances their digital work.

LOS ANGELES — One team will have a leg up on the competition in the upcoming season of “The Amazing Race.” Two of the Harlem Globetrotters are among the 12 teams starring in the 15th edition of the CBS reality show, which premieres Sept. 27. “It’s obviously different from competition at the poker table,” said Ho, who came in 11th place at this year’s World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. “It’s outdoorsy.
