ST. PAUL, Minn. — Despite suffering a minor stroke last week, humorist Garrison Keillor says he has no plans to postpone the upcoming season of “A Prairie Home Companion.” Keillor told The Associated Press late Wednesday that taking it easy makes him restless. The 67-year-old radio show host and best-selling author

says he doesn’t have hobbies, “so work is what I do.” Keillor drove himself to a St. Paul hospital after feeling ill on Labor Day, then was taken by ambulance to the Mayo Clinic where he spent four nights. He was back at work Monday. His famous baritone voice unscathed, he said he’s fine but feels like he has jet lag. The new season of “Prairie Home Companion” kicks off Sept. 26.

Despite stroke, humorist Keillor not slowing down By JEFF BAENEN

★ Talladega’s Culver brings magic to Birmingham

Sept. 18-24, 2009

News

You may not see him, but you know he’s there. Amid the confusion in the red-carpeted lobby, George Culver’s warm, commanding voice resonates through the shouts and excitement as the children prepare to board the five school buses waiting outside. “What’d you think?” Culver asks every child that he can stop in the expansive mainstage lobby of the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. He gets plenty of answers. The Christmas show has just ended, and the children have emerged with bright eyes and unending feedback. Culver, the man dressed in rolled-up shirt sleeves and Hervey tie, is waiting for Folsom them because it’s Artists in Action important to keep an eye on the young imaginations the theater hopes to ignite, he explains. “It’s grand central station here sometimes,” said Culver, Birmingham Children Theatre’s executive director. “But I find my passion in talking to these kids. To feel their energy, to know that we’ve taken them into a different world … it colors everything I do.” Culver, who was formerly executive director of the Ritz Theatre in Talladega, has held his position at BCT for almost a year. He is in charge of the mainstage productions for children in kindergarten through sixth grade, and the Wee Folks Series for pre-school through first grade, as well having the final say on the theater’s touring program, Theatre in Motion. He’s been spreading the word of BCT’s seasons and emphasizing its education component on the local level, statewide and nationally. “We love the youthful spirit he has brought into play here,” said Nancy Jones, director of marketing for BCT. “He brings an enormous amount of energy to our mission, and we’ve seen a rebirth of excitement both with the staff and the audiences. He sets the bar high.” Culver is appreciated at BCT for his management skills, but those who visited the Ritz,

“I find my passion in talking to these kids.” — George Culver, executive director of Birmingham Children’s Theatre and now the children’s theater, know him as a gracious host who knows his audiences — and a creator of magic when it comes to making things happen. Culver, a native of Talladega, spearheaded the capital restoration of the historic Ritz Theatre as a national Art Deco landmark and kept it active as a regional center which presents touring companies. At BCT he is involved in commissioning new scripts for children’s plays, providing variety in the standards such as The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. BCT is taking the classroom studies to a new plateau — actors are visiting the classrooms after children have seen the shows. Long-term relationships are sought out with the teachers in schools in Alabama and the Southeast, Culver said. “We send e-mails, questionnaires and do surveys,” he added. “We stay in touch.” This summer, Anniston’s Community Actors’ Studio Theater’s Kool Kids saw Jack and the Beanstalk at BCT and the children, parents and grandparents learned the most that day from the personal tour of the facility Culver gave them. BCT’s touring actors have performed on school stages in the county at Piedmont, White Plains, Alexandria, Donoho and Munford while Saks Middle School and Oxford Elementary have come to BCT for curriculum-related trips. According to Culver, the BCT is the only professional arts touring program in the state. Culver leads from broad administrative experience. He lived in New York City for almost 20 years working for several advertising agencies. In addition, he held a manage-

ment position with the cable TV network Showtime and served as director of development and public affairs at The Actor’s Studio under wellknown artists such as director Lee Strasberg. As executive director of Tombigbee Productions, the University of Alabama graduate commissioned and produced the critically acclaimed off- Broadway production of I Don’t Want To Be Zelda Anymore. Presently, Culver is a member of the 2009 Class of Leadership Alabama. Culver says he is humbled in carrying on the legacy of BCT, a 62-year-old theater, and he committed to fostering a deep theater interest in children. “Often, it’s their first professional theater experience, one that will stay in their memory. It’s a great responsibility.”

U2 puts plan in place to offset its carbon footprint By Greg Kot Chicago Tribune

Ed Rode/Associated Press

Bluegrass musician Ricky Skaggs released his new CD, ‘Songs My Dad Loved,’ Tuesday.

Ricky Skaggs pays respects to late father with new CD By JOHN GEROME Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Ricky Skaggs doesn’t mind saying so. Before he was a first-class picker, he was a first-class brat. The 55-year-old country legend cringes when he remembers his sometimes petulant attitude as a child. As a young boy, he’d act up as his father — Hobert Skaggs, a soft-spoken welder and musician — tried to teach him how to play the mandolin. “I’d get mad and didn’t want to play, or I thought I had it right and he’d say I didn’t,” Skaggs recalled. “I’d be a smart aleck and say something, and I regretted it so much. Later, I apologized to my dad so much for my strong-headedness.” Now, Skaggs is offering much more than an apology. On his new CD, Songs My Dad Loved, Skaggs pays homage to his late father, who died in 1996. The disc, released Tuesday, is a collection of songs Hobert Skaggs sang around the house, tunes like Ralph Stanley’s “Little Maggie” and the Louvin Brothers’ “What Is a Home Without Love.” Skaggs plays every instrument (mandolin, banjo, fiddle, guitar and piano) and sings every note. He keeps most of the arrangements simple, just as he and his father used to play them. “My dad never played for a living,” Skaggs says. “He could easily have sang or played with Bill Monroe. He was that good. But he wanted to stay with his family and work to where he could be home on the weekends.” As a young man, Hobert Skaggs sang and played guitar in a duo with his brother on mandolin. After

his brother died in World War II, Hobert vowed that if any of his kids showed an aptitude for music, he’d buy them an instrument. Ricky — the second youngest of four children — displayed that talent. “He bought me a mandolin and showed me three chords,” Skaggs said. They were G, C and D — the basis for dozens of country, bluegrass and folk tunes — and by the time his dad returned home from a welding job in Lima, Ohio, two weeks later, 3-year-old Ricky was playing and singing his little heart out. Hobert Skaggs was so excited that he went out and bought himself a new guitar (he’d lent his old one to a family friend and drifted away from music). “Not only did that start my musical journey, but it kick-started and encouraged a newfound inspiration for him as well,” Skaggs recalled. “He had a reason to play music again.” It didn’t take long to see that his son had a gift. By age 6, Skaggs was invited to perform with Bill Monroe. A year later he was on TV with Flatt & Scruggs. He went on to play with Ralph Stanley, J.D. Crowe and Emmylou Harris before launching a solo career in 1981, and between 1982 and 1989, he had 11 No. 1 country hits. Skaggs, who’s won 14 Grammys and sold millions of records, returned to bluegrass in the 1990s and became one of the genre’s leading figures — and one of its most adventurous, working with artists including rock singers Bruce Hornsby, John Fogerty and Jack White (he was recently nominated for the Country Music Association’s vocal event of the year for “Old Enough,” a song with White’s Raconteurs and Ashley Monroe).

CHICAGO — U2’s “360 Tour,” which made its North American debut Saturday at Chicago’s Soldier Field, is a good old-fashioned stadiumrock extravaganza. The numbers are staggering: Three 90-foottall custom-built stages containing a 54-ton cylindrical video screen and 500 personnel are being hauled around the country by a fleet of 189 trucks and buses. In addition, the band is expected to pile up 70,000 miles jetting around the world by the time the 2-year tour concludes in 2010. In part because U2 and its singer Bono have been outspoken on numerous social and political causes, the band drew criticism during its European tour for the environmental impact of such a massive undertaking. Carbonfootprint.com, a company which assesses environmental damage, estimates the tour will generate 65,000 tons in carbon emissions. David Byrne blogged, “Those stadium shows may possibly be the most extravagant and expensive (production-wise) ever: $40 million to build the stage and, having done the math, we estimate 200 semitrucks crisscrossing Europe for the duration. It could be professional envy speaking here, but it sure looks like, well, overkill, and just a wee bit out of balance given all the starving people in Africa and all.” The band says it’s not ignoring those concerns. In an interview with the BBC, guitarist The Edge said, “It’s probably unfair to single out rock ’n’ roll. There’s many other things that are in the same category but, as it happens, we have a program to offset whatever carbon footprint we have.” The Edge was vague on details, perhaps because the program is in its early stages. But U2 does have an environmental plan in place for the tour, which includes having tour promoter Live Nation pay for programs to offset the carbon impact, according to an environmentalist working with the tour. Earlier this year, U2 and Live Nation hired greening company MusicMatters and EFFECT Partners to accompany the tour and work on cutting emissions and other damaging side effects of staging big rock concerts. Already, said MusicMatters Chief Executive Michael Martin, the tour has cut the number of vehicles by 10 percent. Other changes include having tour staff use canteens instead of disposable water bottles. Venues such as Soldier Field are being encouraged to use everything from environmentally friendly soap and toilet paper to offering discount parking for hybrid vehicles. At the end of the tour, Martin and his team will offer a handful of proposals to the band and promoter about how they can offset the environmental damage.

Ace Frehley Anomaly

Guns ’N Roses has nothing on Ace Frehley when it comes to lengthy album delays. The 17 years it took to finish Chinese Democracy was generally considered the gold standard of rock ’n’ roll procrastination. Until now. The former Kiss guitarist took 20 years to finish Anomaly, his fourth solo studio album and first since 1989’s Trouble Walkin’. And yes, it was worth the wait. In between a five-year Kiss reunion and recurring battles with the bottle, Frehley picked away at his new album, emerging with a disc that evokes the spirit and fire of his self-titled 1978 solo album. That disc was the most successful of the four Kiss solo albums that were simultaneously released, and the only one to spawn a hit single in “New York Groove.” He kicks things off with “Foxy And Free,” an in-your-face rocker that packs a powerful punch. The next track, “Outer Space,” plays on his role as the Spaceman

in Kiss, and adds a heavier bottom groove. Frehley serves up a smoking cover of Sweet’s 1970s hit “Fox On The Run” that starts with his trademark guitar toggle-switch noodling. “Space Bear,” an ode to the stuffed animal he sits atop his wall of Marshall amps in concert, is the best of three instrumentals on the disc. Anomaly shows why Frehley is one of the most influential guitarists in rock history — and why Kiss remains a pale imitation without him. CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: “Sister,” an unreleased track Frehley played on his 1995 solo tour, finally surfaces on an album in all its thunderous, dissonant glory. — Wayne Parry, Associated Press

Living Colour cranks up the music blender Living Colour, The Chair in the Doorway

Living Colour chose a location near Prague to record its first studio album in five years, yet decided against including any Czech folk or Dvorak covers on The Chair in the Doorway. That’s a surprise, because as hardrock bands go, Living Colour has always displayed an unusual ability to mix many influences. The musical blender is at work again on Doorway, an album that rivals the NYC quartet’s seminal early work two decades ago. Living Colour snarls like Metallica on “Out Of Mind,” wallows in Seattle sludge on “DecaDance” and does a flashback on “Not Tomorrow,” which would fit — and stand out — on the Woodstock soundtrack. The lyrics borrow from the blues as Corey Glover sings of burning bridges, heaven on fire and flames in his head. An unlisted 12th track with unprintable lyrics is hilarious R-rated power pop

unlike anything the band has done before, and there are the more familiar references to R&B, especially on “Young Man” and “Bless Those.” Glover emits a mighty roar throughout, and the only problem with Vernon Reid’s guitar solos is there aren’t more. Bet he could do wonders with Dvorak’s Ninth Symphony. CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: “Bless Those” has a lot going on. Call it New Gospel Swing, with a crunchy minor- to major-chord guitar riff over a fat bass, Reid channeling Jimi Hendrix and Glover seeking supplication for people who are ambidextrous. “Bless ... those that can go either way,” he sings. — Steven Wine, Associated Press

Reba McEntire performs in Central Park, on ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’ show in New York.

Reba McEntire is back on top By CAITLIN KING Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Reba McEntire is in a new and strangely familiar place. She’s on a brand new record label, Valory Music Company, and her first solo studio album in six years, Keep On Loving You, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s country album charts. McEntire is no stranger to the top spot. She’s sold more than 55 million albums and garnered 33 No. 1 hits throughout her career. She’s also no stranger to the people at Valory, including its president and CEO, Scott Borchetta. They worked together when he was a top executive at McEntire’s old label, MCA Nashville, in the 1990s. “I know a lot of their ways of doing things,” McEntire said. “And so it was just kinda like a family reunion, getting back together again and getting to work with Scott and his team. We’re having a wonderful time.” Borchetta also famously launched Taylor Swift’s career through Valory’s sister label, Big Machine Records. McEntire could see a collaboration with Swift in the future. “I’d love to sing with Taylor,” said McEntire. “She’s a wonderful gal, and as young as she is, she’s got a wonderful head on her shoulders with business sense. She’s a great writer, a great performer. Boy, the sky’s

the limit for Taylor.” One thing McEntire, 54, shares on her new album is life experience. She co-wrote the song, “She’s Turning 50 Today.” “We changed a little bit, especially on the second verse, because I wanted it to be more personal. I did have a divorce in 1987 when I left Oklahoma and came to Nashville. So, I wanted it to be a little bit more persona,” she said. McEntire is up for two Country Music Association Awards this year — female vocalist of the year and musical event of the year for her performance with Brooks & Dunn on “Cowgirls Don’t Cry.” She retains her position as the female artist with the highest number of nominations in the 43-year history of the Country Music Association Awards with 48. Right now, McEntire is fully committed to music, after spending the last eight years acting and doing other projects. She performed on Broadway in Annie Get Your Gun and starred in her self-titled TV comedy series. McEntire said going back to Broadway or television again “would be a blast,” but it would take the right script for her to do it, and that’s not something she’s actively looking for. “Right now, I really want to focus on my music and promote this album and see what the fans think about it,” she said.

‘Jennifer’s Body’ a total bust jennifer’s body H Rating: R for sexuality, bloody violence, language and brief drug use Running time: 1:48 STARRING: Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried

By Colin Covert Star Tribune (Minneapolis)

The title character in Jennifer’s Body has a novel eating disorder. Megan Fox plays Jennifer, who gets a makeover from high school vamp to demon bloodsucker. She binges on the guts of high school boys and purges in torrents of black projectile vomit. In similar fashion, the film gobbles up horror movie cliches and sploshes them onto the screen in half-digested disarray. This is the kind of fiasco so jarring that you wish the ushers would wrap you in a shock blanket and hand you a cup of cocoa. Fans of Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody can only hope her followup to Juno will soon be forgotten, an awkward asterisk in a proud career. The story is narrated by Jennifer’s best friend, Needy (Mamma Mia’s Amanda Seyfried), whom we meet as a violent inmate in an asylum. Back in Devil’s Kettle High School, she was the nerdy nice girl to Jennifer’s cheerleader Queen of Mean. Jennifer wants a wingman for her trip to a road-

20th Century Fox/Associated Press

Megan Fox stars in the film ‘Jennifer’s Body.’ house where a cool rock band is playing. The alpha girl wants to sink her talons into lead singer Nicolai (Adam Brody). We soon learn that he’s trolling the hinterlands for a virgin sacrifice to Satan (the reason for the offering is one of the movie’s few well-conceived jokes). Jennifer, however, is no virgin, and through “demonic transference” she returns to school with an insatiable thirst for boy blood. It’s a serviceable premise, but the execution fails on almost every level.

The tone wobbles like a tray of Jell-O shots. Director Karyn Kusama (Aeon Flux) can’t decide if she’s making a girl-power gore movie, a lampoon of exploitation flicks, or a parody of a Diablo Cody film. Teens discuss the Jennifer situation in hyper-articulate Codyspeak, but fail to call the authorities to do something about it. If they were aiming for was grisly hilarity, with laughs providing a quick reprieve from nail-biting tension, Kusama and Cody utterly miss the target. Kusama has zero feel for the dance of anticipation and surprise that marks a good horror movie. She tries to make kill scenes double-scary by pouring on more ketchup. Which brings us to the matter of Fox, the most mentally checked-out actress this side of Jessica Alba. That tinny voice. Those vacant eyes. That leer-butdon’t-touch strut. Seyfried sells every scene she appears in, even a gratuitous, out-of-nowhere two-minute lip lock with her co-star. She’s the true star of the show. But it’s Fox’s movie, her ascent to leading lady status, and she is simply cringeworthy. I’ve seen balloon animals with more presence. The decent thing to do with Jennifer’s Body would be to cremate it and scatter the ashes.

No sparks from ‘Love Happens’ love happens H H Rating: PG-13 for some language,

sexual references Running time: 1:47 STARRING: Aaron Eckhart, Jennifer Aniston

By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

Love Happens is a comedy in mourning, a romance so sad that even Jennifer Aniston at her most engaging can’t save it. The writer of the deadly Dragonfly has been promoted to writer-director for this one, and despite having the same template as a hundred screen romances, he can’t make it work. Aaron Eckhart is Burke Ryan, the prototypical lonely man in need of love. He’s a motivational speaker, a guy getting rich running self-help get-over-grief seminars.

He and his manager (Dan Fogler, half as funny as usual) are about to turn that hook into a huge multi-media deal. But our lonely man has a dark secret. They all do. Aniston is the quirky girl who can make him love again. Eloise is a florist who saves copies of the touching cards folks send with their flowers. She writes odd words from the dictionary like “quidnunc” behind the paintings at the Seattle hotel where Burke is giving a seminar. She has an oddball slam-poet employee-pal (Judy Greer, naturally). She even has the “car with character,” a ’60s vintage Ford Falcon delivery van. She has just bailed on her latest bad relationship. And when she meets Burke, she blows him off by pretending to be deaf. Can these two lost souls find each other? Without him learning

sign language? Whatever thin potential Love Happens had is utterly botched by co-writer/director Brandon Camp, son of Benji filmmaker Joe Camp. He struggles to find a laugh in the first half hour, delivers a nice comic confrontation that he never repeats and works in a funny bit about Burke’s wife’s cockatoo — he calls it a “parrot,” which he bird-naps from his bitter in-laws. But Camp bogs down in the Dr. Phil side of the story — Burke’s efforts to “help” people and come to terms with his own grief .Eckhart plays “broken” for the whole movie and Aniston plays herself — as a florist. Love Happens doesn’t bring tears and what’s worse, doesn’t create sparks. Thats a crying shame.

The joke’s on us with ‘The Informant!’ the informant H H H Rating: R for disturbing violent content, some sexuality and language Running time: 1:48 STARRING: Matt Damon, Melanie Lynskey, Scott Bakula, Joel McHale

Associated Press LOS ANGELES — The exclamation point in the title is your first clue that Steven Soderbergh’s intentions are more than a little askew with The Informant! Then you notice Matt Damon’s helmet of hair, his pouf of a mustache, his corny sportswear and the paunch where the Bourne trilogy star’s taut abs used to be. And once the strains of Marvin Hamlisch’s jaunty score begin — an ideal accompaniment to the faded, ’70s-style cinematography — you know you’re in some vividly retro, comic parallel universe. The Informant! is about a serious, real-life subject, only Soderbergh, directing a script by Scott Z. Burns, approaches it in the goofiest way, rather than as a serious drama like The Insider or even his own Erin Brockovich. It’s a kick, really, but it also keeps you guessing: Is Damon, as Mark Whitacre, just a regular guy who gets in over his head? Is he far more scheming and malevolent than his folksy Midwestern demeanor would suggest? Or is something else entirely going on here? Based on the book by former New York Times writer Kurt Eichenwald, The Informant! follows Whitacre’s misadventures as he agrees to wear a wire to expose a price-fixing scheme at Archer Daniels Midland, the Illinois-based agribusiness conglomerate where he’s an executive. Actually, “agrees” doesn’t even begin to describe his reaction. He’s more like a giddy little boy playing Agent 007 — or 0014, as he describes himself, because he thinks he’s twice as smart. He’s totally convinced himself that he’s on a mission, that he’s doing the right thing for the greater good. At the same time, he tries to maintain the facade of living an idyllic, uppermiddle class life with his perfectly coifed wife, Ginger (Melanie Lynskey), who always serves a proper dinner in the dining room for Whitacre and their children. But as his ineptitude evolves into unreliability and eventually desperation, he becomes more trouble than help to agents Brian Shepard (Scott Bakula) and Bob Herndon (Joel McHale). One question lingers, though: What does his wife know and when does she know it? Ginger is the weak link here, her docile, doting presence making us wonder whether she’s aware of her husband’s true nature, having been with him since childhood. Some insight would have been helpful, could have fleshed things out. But the joke might just be on her, as it is on us.

dvd previews Easy Virtue This traditional English comedy of manners is cut from the same drapery as Gosford Park and any Oscar Wilde film adaptation, minus the thematic heft and belly laughs of either. But for those thirsty for an unchallenging diversion, this may be your cup of tea. The English countryside is lovely, after all, and so are the actors: Kristin Scott Thomas as the cold matriarch Mrs. Whittaker, Colin Firth as her uncouth husband and Ben Barnes as their dapper son John. John recently married an American (heavens!) who’s

also a famous race-car driver with an accomplished sexual resume (gracious!). What might’ve been a scrumptious, chocolatey dessert of a movie — a Noel Coward delight — is instead a scoop of lemon ice, not filling, faintly sweet and mostly water.

Throughout history, James (Jackman) and Victor (Liev Schreiber) kick major enemy butt together. Victor/Sabretooth is always the more sadistic of the two and James, a.k.a. Logan, a.k.a. Wolverine, constantly has to rein him in. — The Washington Post

‘Meatballs’ is delicious Cloudy with a chance of meatballs H H H H Rating: PG for brief mild language Running time: 1:21 STARRING: Voices of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Bruce Campbell

The Orlando Sentinel Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is the latest unexpected delight from Sony Pictures Animation, the folks who gave us Monster House and Surf’s Up. A delicious farce and a backhanded slap at America the Obese, it may be the funniest animated film of the year. Based on the popular children’s book by Judi and Ron Barrett, Meatballs is about fathers and sons, daring to be smart and the price of gluttony. Bill Hader, a voice-acting natural, is Flint Lockwood, the kid who “wants to be smart. But that’s lame.” So the other kids told him. He’s grown up to be the resident screwball inventor of the tiny island town of Swallow Falls. His spray-on

shoes and hybrid “rat-birds” are a bust. But he needs to come up with something since this sardine capital fell on hard times once the world figured out what sardines taste like. His dad (James Caan) wants Flint to join him at the family tackle shop. But Flint, ignoring past disasters, has one last gadget up his sleeve — one that can change water vapor into prepared foods. When this thing goes airborne and cheeseburgers drop from the sky, that’s a Weather News Network event, one the perky intern Sam Sparks (Anna Faris, another natural cartoon voice) is ready to cover. The Sony house animation style is punchy, kid-friendly, and inyour-face — hysterical close-ups of characters like the hysterical cop. In between the Jell-O mold diving, ice-cream sledding and the derivative, overdone action finale, Hader, Faris Caan and the writers deliver a biting message that parents should love — celebrate smartness and ease up on the “easy” (junk) food before it kills you.

Downing still has vision for local entertainment By Ben Flanagan Special to The Star

Robert Downing remembers things. Things that will probably make you jealous or nostalgic, depending on which generation you’re a part of. He remembers The Kingsman rolling into the Anniston City Auditorium with their hit song “Louie, Louie.” He also remembers singer/ songwriter Lou Christie belting out his falsetto on “Lightning Strikes” in the same venue. Younger folks may not care much about those acts, but the next few names Downing remembers will send a chill down their spines. As a Jacksonville State University undergrad, he saw Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers Band, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, ZZ Top, Kiss, Rush, Billy Joel, Linda Ronstadt and Jimmy Buffett all tear the roof off the Pete Mathews Coliseum. He even brought some of them here when he was in charge of campus entertainment as Student Government Association vice president. His roommate and friend, Robert Stewart, held the office before him, and together they tried to make their fellow students as happy as possible. Mission accomplished. Today, Downing serves Calhoun County Commissioner of District 2. As far as entertainment, he understands not only the importance of further establishing this area as a cultural beacon in Alabama, but also the great potential this area has. Downing talks to The Star about his personal favorite area entertainment offerings, Hal Holbrook as Mark Twain and his vision to establish a thriving arts community at Fort McClellan. How and why do we get the limited entertainment choices we do in Calhoun County? I think the limiting factor is the money. Take the Music at McClellan series. Couldn’t survive without a large degree of public support. Secondly, you have to have an organization that works very hard to make it successful. Birmingham had City Stages, a big organization, probably 1,000 volunteers. They get big subsidies from the city and the county and other places. I think it starts with your population. You’ve got to have kind of a core group of people that want to see entertainment happen. Those people have to be helped and supported by the public. Not just for volunteers but from local governments. These things can’t support themselves. The arts programs that benefit the whole community at large have to be subsidized. If you look anywhere around, you see that that has to happen.

There would be a few exceptions, like that big show in Enterprise, BamaJam. Scads of people come to that, but that’s an anomaly. It’s like Bonnaroo. It just happens to be there, and all of these people come from everywhere to go to it. Why should we have to drive to Atlanta or Birmingham or even the performance centers in Talladega or Gadsden for some entertainment? I think they do that to augment their entertainment. Sure, we all do. We all go to different places. If you live in Birmingham, you go to different places. Nobody has it all. People enjoy being entertained, they like to get out some. I went to the Hal Holbrook as Mark Twain show in Talladega last year. It was great. They’ve got a nice little theater restored. Seats 500 people maybe. Halbrook was there doing what he’s done since college. It was great to be able to go see that. Just like we have people who come from all over to see Music at McClellan or to the Knox Concert Series. Do you think our entertainment choices are too limited in Calhoun County? I’d like to see more, certainly. I think the arts community is kind of the soul of the community in one respect. It gives people enjoyment, it makes people think. It gives the community a sense of pride in itself. How can the market demand wider, better, stronger, additional entertainment choices in this area? They can be involved and volunteer to help in these endeavors. When you take stock of everything we’ve got going on, there’s a lot of entertainment here. We’ve got a vibrant community theater. We’ve got a great classical music program in the Knox Concerts. We’ve got an outdoor series in the summers with Music at McClellan. We have the bike festivals and 5K running events. Super Saturdays, Oxford Fest, Ohatchee Fest. We couldn’t call ourselves a mecca for entertainment, but there is a lot going on. Would we like to see more? Yeah, it would be great. We have a lot of very talented and creative people in our community. But it takes the public demanding more and coming to the city and county to put things together. What can the rest of Calhoun County do to improve itself as a cultural attraction in Alabama? You can work with those groups that have vision and support them. One of my dreams for Fort McClellan, or my vision, has been to establish a thriving arts community

Which demographic do you think this area bests serves entertainmentwise? I would say it best serves the 40-andup crowd. I think there’s probably less for the kids to do. Little kids are pretty much entertained by sports. When I was a little kid, we had a county fair. College-aged kids are who we need to focus on to some extent. Young people that would want to be happy here, raise a family here and want to live here so

that it keeps the community going. I spoke to someone who said they wish there were more venues that appealed to more of a diverse audience. Do you think there’s enough of a demand for that here? Yeah, I think there is. You just have to try it. We don’t have any promoters that I know of who are promoting musical concerts. We don’t have dance in this town. That’s something for sure that has to be subsidized. Classical music has to be subsidized. You have to have a venue to do it in. You have to have somebody who will take the risk, buy the talent, sell tickets and make it happen. That’s what we did at JSU. We would be the talent, get our committees together and put up posters, sell T-shirts. What are your favorite Calhoun County entertainment offerings? I love the bike races. That’s my most fun event of the year. It’s great to watch those athletes perform, and it’s a great party as well. I like the Knox Concerts. I like the CAST theatrical productions. I try to support all of those. I don’t know the local bands that play at places like Brother’s.

This story is the eighth in a series that examines Calhoun County’s arts and entertainment scene. The Anniston Star surveyed members of the community who play prominent roles in delivering residents with high-quality entertainment options about their craft and how they feel about the local entertainment scene. The series will feature local musicians, fine artists, filmmakers, arts educators and public figures who make entertainment decisions in the county. The mission of the series is to offer an introspective look at this area as a cultural attraction in Alabama and the Southeast. The Star takes a look at local entertainment’s past, present and what it could and should be, seen through the eyes of the entertainers.

areas. You’ve have the ability to create something out there that’s really special. If you create a strong arts community, then the types of businesses that you want to recruit to provide the economic development are much more likely to come. Industries that have to recruit young talented people to work for them, they’re going to go to places with where they want to be. If you developed McClellan in such a way that allows a strong cultural and artistic community to be there, then those people are going to want to come to McClellan. We’ve got land out there, buildings to support those groups. The local community needs to support those efforts.

‘Scribblenauts’ leads parade of DS gems

By LOU KESTEN Associated Press

Apple has turned the iPhone into a popular device for video games. Sony is about to introduce the PSP go, a slick new version of its handheld PlayStation Portable. But both companies are still playing catch-up with Nintendo, which has dominated the portable game market for decades. The secret: a steady supply of terrific games. Here’s a roundup of some of the best new releases for the Nintendo DS. n “Scribblenauts” (WB Games, $29.99): This charming game from 5th Cell, the studio behind the nifty “Drawn to Life,” boasts a thoroughly original gimmick. Instead of providing a limited set of tools to solve its puzzles, it encourages you to use your imagination. Think a ladder would be useful? Switch to the keyboard, type in “ladder” and — voila! — one appears on the screen. The studio says there are tens of thousands of nouns in the game’s dictionary, so you can conjure up anything from an aardvark to a zucchini (within the bounds of good taste). You’ll want to keep using certain objects, like a rope or a helicopter, but “Scribblenauts” rewards you for trying different tools. There are some frustrations: Some objects don’t do what you might expect, and the main character can be hard to control. But with dozens of clever puzzles, and even more ways to solve them, there’s a lot of value in this innovative package. Three stars out of four. n “Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box” (Nintendo, $34.99): Puzzle maniacs will also adore this mystery, the second in a series from the Japanese studio Level 5. This time, the professor and his protege, Luke, race across a fantastical version of Europe in search of the title object, which is said to kill anyone who opens it. While the story is solid, it’s mainly a framework to present about 150 brainteasers, which are tied in somewhat loosely. There are exercises in logic, math, observation and object manipulation, and part of the fun is that you never know what you’re going to get. Hardcore puzzle geeks will recognize many of the challenges, but it’s still fun to encounter the old classics in new forms. Three stars. n “Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story” (Nintendo, $34.99): Nintendo’s beloved brothers have somehow become the stars of the most reliable role-playing series on the DS. In their third adventure together, the guys explore a brave new world: the innards of their old foe, Bowser. It’s essentially two adventures in one, with Bowser wreaking havoc across the Mushroom Kingdom while Mario and Luigi survive the creatures inside his body. The comedy is a refreshing change from the genre’s usual seriousness, and the gameplay is varied and lively. Developer AlphaDream hits the sweet spot between accessibility and challenge, creating an RPG that anyone can enjoy. Three-and-a-half stars.

The General Motors jouster of Roger & Me and health-care trouper of Sicko no longer in the documentary business? “I’m saying it’s a possibility, yeah,” Moore said in an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Capitalism played in advance of its limited release in theaters Sept. 23 and nationwide rollout Oct. 2. “I’ve done this for 20 years. I started out by warning people about General Motors, and my whole career has been trying to say the emperor has no clothes here, and we better do something about it,” Moore said. “I’ve been having to sort of knock my head against the wall here for 20 years saying these things. “Two years ago, I tried to get the health-care debate going, and it did eventually, and now where are we? We may not even have it. What am I supposed to do at a certain point?” Moore, 55, whose nonfiction projects include the television shows TV Nation and The Awful Truth, is thinking he wants to return to fiction. He wrote and directed one fictional film, the 1995 comedy Canadian Bacon, starring John Candy in his next-to-last role as an American county sheriff who goes on the warpath after the U.S. president (Alan Alda) tries to boost his sagging image by provoking hostilities with Canada. The movie was a critical and commercial dud, but Moore said he is anxious to do more narrative flicks. Moore said he has been working on two fiction screenplays while making Capitalism, a docu-

mentary in which he pegs corporate inroads into the federal government during the Reagan years as a key factor in today’s economic meltdown. In Capitalism, Moore offers a glimpse of the rosier America in which he grew up in Flint, Mich., where his father worked at a spark-plug factory. Moore and his dad revisit the sprawling site of the defunct plant, now just barren lots and demolition debris. “I had not seen it leveled. It was pretty shocking, actually. I was affected by just standing there,” Moore said. “That place represented a good, middle-class living for our family, and it’s now surrounded by a town that’s dying. Where the only people left there are the people struggling, really struggling, to survive.” The film presents a condo shark brokering deals on foreclosed units and chronicles the despair of people evicted from their homes. It details corporate profiteering through “dead peasant” insurance policies companies take out on employees and captures tongue-tied experts unable to explain investment derivatives that are blamed for much of the economic chaos. Capitalism serves as something of a call to arms for others to step in and fill the void as Moore moves on to other things. “I think people will be maybe somewhat disappointed because there’s so many things we need to deal with right now, and they wish I would make a film about it. But I want other people to make those films,” Moore said. “I am tired of feeling like I’m doing this alone. All through the eight years of Bush, you Google ‘Bush’ and ‘nemesis’ and I’m the first name up. And there aren’t a whole lot of other names,” Moore said. “It doesn’t work with Michael Moore and Sean Penn and Ted Kennedy and a few others. The people have got to get involved in their democracy.”

The academy expands some categories

Neil Patrick Harris makes his debut as Emmy host Sunday night — just as the telecast could use a great big blast of his “awesomeness.” The Emmys, you see, have a public-relations problem. Long regarded as the ugly stepsister to the Oscars, they’ve lost even more luster lately as ratings plunged and buzz waned. Blame, in part, the major disconnect between Emmy voters and the masses. This year’s nomination list is again riddled with TV’s equivalent of little art house films — niche shows that hardly anyone watches. To wit: AMC’s Mad Men is a snazzy, handsomely crafted drama, but there are probably some traveling carnivals larger than its audience. And so why would people watch an Emmy telecast that celebrates shows they don’t watch? The TV academy tried to ease the problem by expanding a few awards categories to six or seven nominees. That opened the door to some colorful newcomers (Family Guy). But it also let in more cult upstarts (Flight of the Conchords). Meanwhile, some of TV’s biggest shows — CSI, Grey’s Anatomy, Two and a Half Men — are only sparsely represented. The academy also attempted to shake things up by banishing some fringe categories to earlier in the evening before the telecast starts. But the guilds howled, and the plan was scrapped. Maybe Harris, with his abundant wit and charm, can be a game-changer. Then again, maybe they should have enlisted Kanye West. He seems to know how to bring buzz to an awards show. Here’s a rundown of the major categories and some predictions:

Outstanding Drama The nominees: Big Love (HBO); Breaking Bad (AMC); Damages (FX); Dexter (Showtime); House (Fox); Lost (ABC); Mad Men (AMC). The lowdown: Lost, which last won in 2005, put together another mind-blowing season. But our guess is that the voters are still madly in love with Mad Men.

Outstanding Comedy The nominees: Entourage (HBO); Fami-

Top-nominated networks 99 67 55 49 42 42 ly Guy (Fox); Flight of the Conchords (HBO); How I Met Your Mother (CBS); The Office (NBC); 30 Rock (NBC); Weeds (Showtime). The lowdown: 30 Rock has won two straight years, and it figures that, sooner or later, the voters will tire of Tina Fey’s twisted satire. Then again, Frasier once ruled this category five straight years. So we’ve got 30 Rock achieving the three-peat. Sorry, Stewie.

Outstanding Actor, drama The nominees: Simon Baker (The Mentalist, CBS); Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment, HBO); Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad); Michael C. Hall (Dexter); Jon Hamm (Mad

(The Closer, TNT). The lowdown: Not nearly as competitive as the men, this category appears to come down to two nominees — Close and Moss. We’d take Moss, but Close will prevail with the showier role. (Also, Emmy voters typically suck up to former movie stars).

Men); Hugh Laurie (House, Fox). The lowdown: This category is the toughest to call. Every nominee is deserving, even the rookie Baker, who won us over with his charm and charisma. Our dream pick would be Hall, who manages to make his serial-killing monster empathetic. But something tells us the long-overdue Laurie will collect the hardware.

Outstanding Actress, drama The nominees: Glenn Close (Damages); Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters, ABC); Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU, NBC); Holly Hunter (Saving Grace, TNT); Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men, AMC); Kyra Sedgwick

The nominees: Alec Baldwin (30 Rock); Steve Carell (The Office); Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords), Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory, CBS); Tony Shalhoub (Monk, USA); Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men, CBS). The lowdown: And a geek shall inherit the prize. Parsons had the breakout comedy performance of the year as the brainy, obsessive Star Trek-loving Sheldon Cooper. Nothing against the veterans here, but they need to make way for the hilarious newbie.

Outstanding Actress, comedy The nominees: Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?, ABC); Toni Collette (United States of Tara, Showtime); Tina Fey (30 Rock, NBC); Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine, CBS); Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds, Showtime); Sarah Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program, Comedy Central). The lowdown: We have an unyielding crush on Applegate and threw a little snit when her show was axed. But we’re also realists, and we can’t see anyone beating Fey.

Outstanding Reality Competition The nominees: The Amazing Race (CBS); American Idol (Fox); Dancing With the Stars (ABC); Project Runway (Bravo); Top Chef (Bravo). The lowdown: OK, we get it. The Amazing Race is an amazing show. Now let someone else win the blasted Emmy. We don’t care who. Anyone.

And the Emmy should also go to ... n Supporting Actor, Drama: Michael Emerson (Lost, ABC) n Supporting Actress, Drama: Chandra Wilson (Grey’s Anatomy, ABC) n Supporting Actor, Comedy: Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, (CBS) n Supporting Actress, Comedy: Amy Poehler (Saturday Night Live, NBC) n Reality host: Ryan Seacrest (American Idol, Fox)

TV stars and creators have teamed up to create www.EmmyTVLegends.org, which includes 600 interviews.

LOS ANGELES — Steve Allen describes the birth of Tonight. Isabel Sanford talks about her path from theater to The Jeffersons. Writer-producer James L. Brooks pulls back the curtain on the creation of The Simpsons and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, while leading lady Moore offers her own perspective. And Walter Cronkite is on the record about his sole on-air product endorsement — for cigarettes. Their interviews are part of an online gold mine of TV history, EmmyTVLegends.org, created by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation. Some 600 interviews have been taped for more than a decade by volunteers, including scholars and industry members. So far, about 200 have been posted at the site that launched this week, just before Sunday’s Emmy Awards. “We really want television fans, and people who have great memories of television they watched growing up, to have fun, to dive in and discover things about the people they grew up with,” Terri Clark, foundation executive director, said. Every profession and craft is included in the ongoing project, including performers, directors, writers, cinematographers and executives. The lengthy, detailed interviews follow an oral-history template and cover both the personal and professional. The Web site is intended to serve those seeking a career in entertainment as well as the public, said archive director Karen L. Herman. “There’s so much information about how you shoot something or you direct or you write. These things don’t change. The

technology may change, but not the process,” Herman said. The site is graphically appealing and easy to navigate. TV buffs will relish the opportunity to hear more than a sound bite from their favorites, including those who are now gone, such as Allen and Cronkite. More than 2,000 hours have been recorded with prominent industry figures, although not all Emmy winners, selected by a committee. The ad-supported site is funded through the foundation, the educational and charitable arm of the TV academy that organizes the Emmys, and by donations. The foundation declined to provide the cost of the project to date. New interviews are being added daily, and Herman and her staff are gradually indexing each two- to six-hour video to allow visitors to quickly find specific topics and cross-references. On Tuesday alone, indexed interviews with Sanford, Law & Order creator-producer Dick Wolf and George Takei of Star Trek were added to the roughly 50 already available, Herman said. Nearly everyone agrees to talk, but she has yet to persuade a short list topped by Bill Cosby, Mel Brooks and Jerry Seinfeld. Jeff Abraham, a publicist and comedy aficionado, has conducted more than a half-dozen interviews for the project. He considers it a privilege to “sit at the feet” of TV’s best and brightest. What results is a revealing interview but not a self-absorbed one. The talk with comedian-writer Bill Dana, for example, yields his assessment of the brilliance of Tonight host Allen, Abraham said. “Both the interviewer and the interviewee know the importance of this: It’s for the ages,” he said.

‘It’ host Neil Patrick Harris takes on the Emmys By LYNN ELBER Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — If only one awards show host at a time holds the “it” title, then the current darling is Neil Patrick Harris. Harris entered the big leagues with this year’s Tony Awards, using his musical theater skills and easy charm to win over the audience and critics. A phone call enlisting him as host of Sunday’s Emmy Awards followed — which leaves a certain movie ceremony for the hat trick. “Tonys, Emmys, and then there’s only one thing left — the Telemundo Awards,” quipped Harris. Harris, 36, who gained teenage fame in Doogie Howser, M.D. before moving onstage to Rent and other plays, stars in How I Met Your Mother and is a best-supporting actor nominee for the CBS comedy. Emmy executive producer Don Mischer says he has the right man for the job, one

who will prove a graceful and funny host and can be entertaining in “short pops.” “He’s terrific with that,” Mischer said. “And because Neil doesn’t feel the need to come out and hit a home run every time he makes an appearance, that frees him up to have a more consistent presence in the show. ... I think that keeps the energy of the show up.” Harris says his focus is less on himself as emcee and more on the ceremony. He asked to share producer duties for the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards at the downtown Nokia Theatre. Harris also wanted to ensure he has “decent material,” asking comedian-writer Paul Greenberg, a longtime friend, and writer Joe Kelly from How I Met Your Mother to help craft it. The sitcom’s executive producers, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, joined in. Harris’ hands-on approach appears sound. With him and fan-favorite musicals on board for the Tony ceremony, Broadway’s

big night posted a 19 percent increase over last year’s show and drew its biggest audience in three years. In contrast, the 2008 Emmys were the least-watched ever, with 12.3 million viewers, and offered perhaps the worst-received hosting performance since David Letterman brought his late-night act to the Academy Awards. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences made another attempt to breathe life into the main show, this time by proposing to give eight of the 28 awards earlier and show edited acceptances. The goal was to make room for viewer-friendly content, with proponents noting that the Tonys and Grammys won ratings bounces with more entertainment. But the plan ran afoul of some, including members of the writers guild, who saw it as attempt to minimize their role in the ceremony and the industry. It was ditched. Veteran producer Mischer says he’s

accepted the challenge of making the show work as is. He’s grouping related awards — reality categories together, for instance — and asking some presenters to give two awards to keep the ceremony snappy. “The last thing we wanted is to be in the room when people are unhappy. If it’s a night celebrating the best of television, we need a celebratory attitude in the audience,” Mischer said. But a key question lingers: Will the host take part in a musical number? Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, who wrote the score for Hairspray and the upcoming Catch Me If You Can, dashed off a clever Tonys song for Harris and have done an Emmys tune for him as well. Harris, however, was playing it cagey. “We’re weighing our options,” he said. “But I don’t really want it to be the Neil Patrick Harris show and a bunch of awards. I want it to be the Emmy show, and I’m your camp counselor.”

Jerry Springer vaults from TV sleaze to stage By David Hiltbrand The Philadelphia Inquirer

Lifetime/Associated Press

Joan Allen portrays American artist Georgia O’Keeffe in the Lifetime Original Movie, ‘Georgia O’Keeffe,’ premiering Saturday at 8 p.m.

Joan Allen stars as artist Georgia O’Keeffe in TV film By FRAZIER MOORE Associated Press

NEW YORK — Georgia O’Keeffe stirs recognition in certain predictable ways: her no-nonsense face leathered by the New Mexico sun; her paintings of animal skulls and of flowers that mystically evoke ladies’ privates. But there is much more to know about O’Keeffe, who in her 98 years established herself as one of the best-known women painters in history — and more. A new Lifetime film, Georgia O’Keeffe, provides a telling glimpse through the framework of her love affair, collaboration and emotional tug-of-war with photographer Alfred Stieglitz. This biopic, which premieres Saturday at 8 p.m. is directed by the versatile Bob Balaban (a filmmaker, writer and actor remembered as Elaine’s boyfriend Russell on Seinfeld). Oscar winner Jeremy Irons is charismatically exasperating as Stieglitz, whose own artistic pursuits took a back seat to championing O’Keeffe’s career, even as his self-absorbed nature threatened to destroy her. And Joan Allen plays the fiercely independent yet vulnerable O’Keeffe, a young woman who meets Stieglitz in New York early in the last century, finds fame under his tutelage, then makes a difficult break to spend the bulk of her years in Santa Fe’s splendid isolation. Allen, who helped develop the O’Keeffe project and serves as an executive producer, says she felt

simpatico with the painter. “I’m from Illinois, she was from Wisconsin, and I could understand a midwestern quality about her,” says Allen between bites of a pizza margarita near her Upper West Side Manhattan apartment. “She knew what she wanted to do: At 8 years old she was playing with her friend and asked her, ‘What are you going to do when you grow up?’ ‘I don’t know.’ ‘Well, I’m gonna be a painter.’ “At 8 years old, I was, ‘I’m gonna be an actor.’ “So I could see that we shared a kind of focus.” Now a remarkably young-looking 53, Allen began her acting career as a founding member of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater Company and has enjoyed New York stage triumphs including The Heidi Chronicles and her Tony Award-winning run in Burn This. During two decades in dozens of films, she has played the former first lady in Oliver Stone’s Nixon, an accused witch in The Crucible, and a CIA agent in The Bourne Supremacy and that thriller’s sequel, The Bourne Ultimatum. In March, Allen returned to Broadway in the play Impressionism, opposite Irons. “I already knew I was going to be doing a play with him when O’Keeffe came together last summer,” she says. “He got on board and we were shooting by late October.” The brisk four-week production took place in and around Santa Fe, she says, accommodating Manhattan scenes and what subs for Stieglitz’s Lake George, N.Y., estate.

NEW YORK — Jerry Springer is all over the map. “I’m in the London Hotel in New York doing Chicago,” he says over breakfast in the coffee shop off the lobby. (The itinerary continued to expand Tuesday when he came to Philadelphia to perform six shows of the evergreen Kander-Ebb musical Chicago.) That’s right. Springer, the Nero of TV talk shows, the Davy Jones of lowbrow, is doing legitimate theater. It’s official. You have now seen everything. Actually, Springer is the latest in a long line of unlikely celebrities — among them Alan Thicke, Huey Lewis and George Hamilton — to play grandstanding attorney Billy Flynn in the play set in the 1920s. After seven weeks in the role in London’s West End, he just wrapped up a three-week Broadway engagement and is joining the touring company for brief runs in Philadelphia and in Atlanta. Producers of the show, which this summer became the longest-running revival in Broadway history, reached out to Springer’s agent after seeing him hoof on Dancing With the Stars in 2006. As they waited for working space amid Springer’s TV commitments, another important qualification somehow slipped through the cracks: Nobody had checked on whether he could sing. “I’m in London and the phone rings,” Springer says. “And the man says, ‘I’m with Chicago. I’m a little embarrassed about this, but would you mind coming down to the (rehearsal) studio this afternoon? We’d like to hear you sing.’ “I said, ‘No one has even bothered to question that until now?’ And he said, ‘We all thought someone else had asked.”’ As it turns out, he can carry a tune — even if he bumps its head on the floor several times during the conveyance. But who better to belt out a song like “Razzle Dazzle”? Still, it took a certain amount of chutzpah to accept the gig. But how often does a redeeming opportunity like this come along? “My family talked me into it,” he says. “My wife, my daughter, my sister, they all said, ‘Finally, something we can be proud of.”’ His loved ones, generally speaking, try to ignore his day job as the ringmaster of TV’s most raucous Roman circus. Although Springer had no idea what he was getting himself into with Chicago, he’s never been one to shrink from a challenge. “He did what we asked him to do and he did it beautifully,” says the show’s producer, Barry Weisler. “Billy Flynn’s job is to keep the motor of the show going, and Jerry does that admirably.”

ples the game is known for. Takei and Altman have been together for 22 years. “What we want is to display the normality and the joy of having a happy union,” Takei said. The Newlywed Game has been on TV off and on since it premiered in prime-time on ABC in 1967, mostly with Bob Eubanks as host. Singer Carnie Wilson is now host of the show, which is in its second season on GSN. The show teased and tested couples about how well they know each other, with Eubanks delighting in questions about “making whoopee.” It has since featured older couples, interracial couples and some who have lived together many years before marriage. Even long-ago contestants were retested as part of Oldyweds Game segments. Kelly Goode, GSN’s programming chief, said she couldn’t speculate on why gay couples were never included in the past because GSN, the former Game Show Network, has only been responsible for the show for two years. She said it was in the game’s rules that the couple needed to have a legallyrecognized marriage to play. The change “made sense for GSN,” Goode said. “It seems like the show has always reflected the times in terms of marriages depicted and this felt like the next logical step.” Takei and Altman haven’t taped their episode yet but expect to do so soon. GSN hopes to air in October. The show is sprinkling a handful of celebrity players and their new spouses in this season, including Davy Jones of The Monkees, Christopher Knight of The Brady Bunch and Jonny Fairplay of Survivor. Wilson said she had been pressing behind-the-scenes to have an all-gay edition of the show. She’s excited about Takei’s appearance.
