Fact-checking Moore’s ‘Capitalism’ By RACHEL BECK NEW YORK — Despite the title of his new movie, Michael Moore really hates capitalism. He says it’s a scheme for businesses to profit at the expense of the little guy. The provocateur filmmaker is campaigning for an end to what he says is the “evil” in our economic system and a return to the days when our lives weren’t so defined by money. It’s an ambitious theme, but some of his arguments in Capitalism: A Love Story fall apart on closer inspection. Moore’s trademark attack style will be familiar to viewers of his previous movies like Roger & Me and Fahrenheit 9/11. The opening scene includes shots of different bank robberies, which Moore sees as a metaphor for how taxpayers were looted. The film closes with him putting crime-scene tape around the New York Stock Exchange and some Wall Street banks. His message is that capitalism brings out the worst of society. How else to explain why owners of privately operated juvenile detention centers in Pennsylvania paid off two judges to lock up young offenders? There may be more to the story than is told in the film, which is now playing in New York and Los Angeles and opening across the country Oct. 2. That’s partly a function of events overtaking the narrative since filming ended. But that’s not always the case. Consider these three points in the film, which Moore discussed with The Associated Press in a telephone interview. MOORE’S TAKE: Wall Street robbed taxpayers. It’s pure theater when Moore arrives in an armored bank truck at the headquarters of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Holding a white bag with a big dollar sign on it, he tells a security guard he is there to collect the $10 billion in taxpayers’ funds that went to the investment bank. He doesn’t

MOORE’S TAKE: You’re better off dead — at least that’s how some companies view their workers. THE FACTS: Moore highlights an ugly truth about insurance policies that benefit companies, not the employees, when workers die. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is scathed for its use of such “dead peasant” policies. Moore notes how the sudden death of a 26-year-old former Wal-Mart worker resulted in a $81,000 life insurance payout to the retailer. But it’s never mentioned in the body of the film that in 2000 the world’s largest retailer canceled all 350,000 of these policies it took out on employees between 1993 and 1995. MOORE’S RESPONSE: No misrepresentation here, he says: Wal-Mart’s termination of the insurance policies is included in a 7-minute-long presentation of facts and quotes on different issues relating to the movie shown in the closing credits. MOORE’S TAKE: Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., and other government officials

unfairly and hypocritically benefited from financial programs not available to all. Moore asserts that Dodd received more than $1 million in discounted loans for being a “Friend of Angelo,” referring to Angelo Mozilo, the former CEO of Countrywide Financial Corp. That lender, which was heavily involved in the subprime-mortgage business, was sold last year to Bank of America. Also, Moore highlights that as chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, Dodd has oversight over the mortgage and banking industries and has been critical of predatory lending. THE FACTS: Dodd has acknowledged that he participated in a VIP program at Countrywide, refinancing loans on two homes in 2003. One was a 30-year adjustable rate loan for $506,000 with an interest rate of 4.25 percent and a fee of 0.45 percent. He also got a 30-year adjustable rate mortgage for $275,042 with an interest rate of 4.5 percent and a fee of 0.73 percent. Both interest rates and fees were within industry norms for that time, according to data provided to the AP by Bankrate.com. Last month, the Senate’s Select Committee on Ethics cleared Dodd and Kent Conrad of North Dakota of getting special treatment on the mortgages. But the bipartisan panel also said the senators should have “exercised more vigilance” in their dealings with Countrywide to avoid the appearance of sweetheart deals. MOORE’S RESPONSE: “Why wasn’t (the ethics panel’s ruling) in this film? Because the story isn’t over. “I would hope that the Justice Department doesn’t just let this drop,” Moore said. Moore is calling for an investigation into how the loans were made, “not just to Senator Dodd, but to all those in both the Clinton and Bush administrations that benefited from this.”

Moore was unapologetic when asked how his beatdown on capitalism squares with the benefits he earns by teaming with big names in the entertainment industry including Paramount, the Weinstein Co. and Overture Films, which is part of John Malone’s Liberty Media. Moore says his life has greater purpose now that he has found success, and he doesn’t mind paying more in taxes. “It is not right, if you get through the door and get to enjoy the good life, when everyone else struggles and lives paycheck to paycheck,” Moore said. His passion is to convince moviegoers that the game is rigged against most Americans, while Wall Street, big business and the

wealthy keep coming out ahead. Moore says the taxpayer-funded banking bailout amounted to a “double robbery” because average people lost money in the market and then were asked to prop up the same companies that lost it for them. Instead of laying all the blame on banks, Moore could have made the message of Capitalism: A Love Story even more powerful with a more nuanced approach. He does note how some individuals unwisely used their home equity like personal piggybanks, but there isn’t much discussion about how some of the people facing foreclosure got to that point. That would have bolstered his arguments and shown how damaging it is when greed is everywhere.

Since then other large financial companies have repaid funds, too, including Chrysler Financial and American Express Co. Still, many large banks haven’t repaid the TARP money. Citigroup Inc. and Bank of America Corp. each received $45 billion and have yet to repay those funds. Not all of the $700 billion in TARP funds have been disbursed. The total peaked at $425 billion. Rufus Wainwright re-creates Oz Los Angeles Times Martin Scorsese once called Rufus Wainwright a “one-man Greek chorus.” The hyperliterate singersongwriter is the son of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, a devoted fan of Judy Garland and recently an opera composer. (His first, the French-language Prima Donna, premiered this summer.) His next release is a live album, Milwaukee at Last!!!, which was recorded during a 2007 concert and filmed by documentarian Albert Maysles. Both the CD and DVD are out Tuesday. Question: What was the highlight of that night in Milwaukee? Answer: When you know the eyes that are looking at you through the camera are Albert Maysles’, the same eyes that witnessed Edie Beale waltzing down her filthy living room steps, it’s really electrifying. That night was smack in the middle of the Release the Stars tour, so I was a well-oiled machine at that point. Ready to give Judy to the public, you know? And what better place to test that out than in the Midwest? Right in the heartland. Q: How did they react? You dressed as Judy Garland during the encore, but only after you wore lots of sequins and lederhosen first. A: Well, my audience has always been rather crazed about me, so together we just got swept up in the whirlwind. It was amazing. I just want people to get their money’s worth. I know how hard it is to survive in this economic climate and I want people to remember my shows and want to come back for more. So I just imprint their minds with, you know, lewd visions. Q: The Metropolitan Opera originally commissioned Prima Donna, an opera about a fading opera star. What was the inspiration for it? A: The idea kind of shot into my brain after watching these interviews with Maria Callas, but I very quickly realized that her story is so well-known and so overdone. It occurred to me, though, that

the idea of an opera singer is pretty brilliant and hasn’t been done, so I ran with it. I had many things to draw upon. First, I’m a singer myself, and while I wouldn’t say I’m a prima donna, I am pretty tempestuous, so I put some of me in there. Also, because the main character, Regine, is an opera singer, it allowed me to sort of lean on my romantic sensibilities. A lot of the music from her old repertoire is swirling in Regine’s head, so I didn’t feel constrained. There was no pressure to be either modern or romantic — I could go across the board. Q: Did you feel liberated while writing it? Your last solo album of original music, Release the Stars, was already a pretty operatic production. A: The only way I can describe writing an opera is that when you start out you’re on the moon, you think it’s going to be great. Then in the middle of the whole process you go, “What the hell was I thinking? I’m never doing this again. I hate everyone in my life. I might as well kill myself.” Then it premieres and it’s almost like a type of amnesia takes over. You think, “I can’t wait to do it again! Show me to the next cliff!” Actually, I think I want to do a musical next. That way I can sing and star in it. Q: You did get to make a grand entrance for the opening. A: I did. I dressed up as Verdi, and my boyfriend dressed up as Puccini. We sort of tempted fate, didn’t we? Had the premiere been in London or Paris or New York, I don’t think we would have done that. But in Manchester, England, they like a little bit of flair up there. It gets cold in the winter. Q: I read that your next album is going to be a stripped-down affair like your earlier work. A: Yes, it’s just me singing with the piano. My fans have been bombarded by these massive projects, between Rufus Does Judy and the opera, and I feel like it’s time for some sorbet. A little musical sorbet to just clean the palate. And then we can go to Broadway. Sorbet before the Broadway. I don’t know when it will be ready, though.

DETROIT — Eminem’s music publisher wants a bigger slice from Apple. Eight Mile Style LLC and a co-plaintiff, Martin Affiliated LLC, are suing Apple Inc., claiming they never authorized the use of 93 songs in a downloadable format on Apple’s popular iTunes service. The non-jury trial is expected to start Thursday in the rapper’s hometown of Detroit, unless a settlement is reached Wednesday with the help of U.S. Magistrate Judge Virginia Morgan. Eight Mile also is suing Aftermath Records, which controls the recordings in question, saying it didn’t have the right to make deals on digital downloads. It’s unclear from court documents just how much money is at stake, but the plaintiffs claim Apple wrongfully gained $2.5 million through iTunes downloads, including $466,915 from “Lose Yourself,” Eminem’s biggest hit from the hip-hop film 8 Mile. The publisher also believes it should get a share of Apple’s profit from the sale of iPods. Eight Mile also claims Aftermath wrongfully collected $4 million off Eminem’s songs on iTunes. Apple denies the allegations and says it has a valid agreement with Aftermath Records. Eight Mile has received royalties but says that doesn’t mean it can’t press ahead with a lawsuit. The “acceptance of a single check containing mostly royalties for authorized uses, but also containing small and hidden royalties for unauthorized uses, cannot operate as a satisfaction of a claim,” Eight Mile’s lawyers said in a recent filing in federal court. Eight Mile says it still retains ownership, including copyright, of the compositions inside Eminem’s recordings. If the case isn’t settled, the trial before U.S. District Judge Anna Diggs Taylor will center on how to interpret contracts. Eight Mile agreed in 1998 and 2003 that “Eminem would create master sound recordings embodying compositions, and that Aftermath would own those masters,” Apple’s attorneys said in a court filing. “The parties also agreed that Aftermath and its distributors and licensees would ‘have the exclusive right’ to exploit the masters embodying the Eminem compositions ‘in any and all forms of media now known or hereinafter developed,”’ the lawyers said. Howard Hertz, a lawyer for Eight Mile, declined to comment on the case Tuesday. A message seeking comment was left with Daniel Quick of the Apple/Aftermath legal team. It’s unknown if the rapper would attend a trial if there is one. Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, is not on the witness list.

try to love again.” “Got Some” and “Johnny Guitar” are straightforward, driving rock tracks; “Supersonic” is aggressive yet melodic; and they bring a light touch on the fantastic acoustic rocker “Just Breathe” and the soft disc-closer “The End.” The disc’s finest moments come on “Amongst the Waves” and “Unthought Known” — both are the kind of soaring rock anthems Pearl Jam is renowned for with solos by Gossard that are nothing short of uplifting. There are still those who may label them as mere “grunge icons” but Pearl Jam continues to transcend on Backspacer. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: “Amongst the Waves” is a surefire crowd pleaser and Vedder’s lyrics derive poignancy from their simplicity (“Riding high amongst the waves/I can feel like I have a soul that has been saved”). — John Kosik, Associated Press

More good tunes from musician Guy Clark Guy Clark Somedays the Song Writes You

On his 13th studio album, Guy Clark sticks with a simple formula: a small acoustic combo, moderate tempos and good tunes. The need for good tunes would trip up a lesser talent, but as always, Clark comes through. Somedays the Song Writes You includes a Texas sea chantey, the tale of a haunted guitar and an anthem for amateur handymen and guys in general. Clark also sings about wine and whiskey, rues the lure of a bad neighborhood and muses about the creative muse. Clark co-wrote 10 songs with various partners, including Rodney Crowell and Shawn Camp. The 11th cut is a

sweet cover of “If I Needed You,” written by his late friend Townes Van Zandt. The album’s frontporch vibe is inviting, and these are songs worth getting to know. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Clark’s wry humor shines brightest on the final cut, “Maybe I Can Paint Over That.” The title’s a suggested solution for mistakes made, although Clark concedes it probably won’t work. — Steven Wine, Associated Press

Gray CD another dash of soulful folk David Gray Draw the Line

David Gray returns from a hiatus with his eighth full-length effort and first in four years, Draw the Line. The British folk-rocker made a splash stateside with 2000’s White Ladder on the strength of the hit singles “Babylon” and “Please Forgive Me.” He was nominated for a best new artist Grammy two years later. He released two CDs after that — 2002’s A New Day at Midnight and 2005’s Life in Slow Motion — but neither had the mainstream success in the United States that White Ladder did. Draw the Line may find the same fate, but it won’t be due to the quality of the material. Gray again puts his soulful voice and emotional lyrics to full effect over soft, melancholy rock. He relies less on electronics here — helping his warmth shine that much brighter. Disc opener “Fugitive” is a

soaring anthem that will please fans, as will the soft ballad “Nemesis,” which features Gray’s typically colorful lyrics: “I am the photograph you found in your burned down house” and “I am the smell you’re trying to wash out of your hair.” The sweeping “First Chance” finds Gray in search of redemption, “Stella The Artist” is passionate and upbeat, the mid-tempo “Draw The Line” is earthy and organic, and the ballad “Breathe” changes tempos in all the right places. David Gray manages to be admirably idiosyncratic yet completely accessible — and Draw The Line is a real treat because of that. — John Kosik, Associated Press

Noisettes bring jazzy, feisty pop music Noisettes Wild Young Hearts

Jazzy, poppy, punky and bluesy, Wild Young Hearts is a perfect title for the Noisettes’ newest album. The London trio’s follow-up to the debut LP What’s the Time Mr. Wolf has a joyful, youthful quality about it, highlighted by production by Jim Abbiss, the knob-twister behind Adele’s soulful smash debut last year. Frontwoman Shingai Shoniwa slides from melodic, vibrato-filled trilling to girl group R&B, always packed with emotion. She’s the kind of singer whose vocal inflections, like with Billie Holiday and Adele, you really feel. On the title track, Shoniwa chimes in with “la, la, las” over handclaps, before espousing how she’s changed by the end of summer. The hit dance single “Don’t

Upset the Rhythm” struts on a disco guitar riff and electro beats, as Shoniwa proclaims, “We’ll crank that stereo, even when the speakers blow.” She sounds uncannily like Amy Winehouse on the 1960s inflected, catchy “Never Forget You.” Shoniwa shows off her range more on “Atticus,” a lovely acoustic number where her voice snakes up and down. Known for feisty, ferocious live shows, Noisettes should prove wildly successful touring behind Wild Young Hearts. — Solvej Schou, Associated Press

It’s been said that Pearl Jam has spent most of the last decade essentially in revolt against fame. That may be true, but following a strong return to form on their 2006 self-titled disc, Pearl Jam continues to surprise with an upbeat and hope-filled collection on Backspacer. After getting back to basics with its previous disc, which was filled with the emotional and political angst that the band made its name on, Backspacer looks forward with positivity. A change at the top of the U.S. government could have had an effect on Eddie Vedder and his mates, who made no secret of their displeasure on the outgoing administration. The disc is infused with some postpunk/new wave punch and it works very well behind the guitar flourishes of Stone Gossard and Mike McCready — who still work so well off each other — and the pulsating bass of Jeff Ament. Matt Cameron remains one of the most dynamic drummers in rock. On the disc’s lead single, “The Fixer,” Vedder gives voice to the overall tone of Backspacer with shouts of “I wanna fight to get it back again” and “I wanna

LOS ANGELES — The “reinvention” of the 1980 high school musical Fame — please, people, don’t call it a remake — stays faithful to the spirit and structure of Alan Parker’s original while sucking out all the raciness. There’s no nudity in this PG-rated version, no one gets an abortion. No one even lights a single cigarette. So no, it’s not exactly the most realistic depiction of modern high-school life. But at the same time, dancer and choreographer Kevin Tancharoen, making his feature directing debut, doesn’t turn Fame into the kind of slick, overly edited eye candy you might expect. It’s stylized, yes, and it movies really fluidly while still maintaining some urban grittiness. And in a world where people aspire for instant recognition by making idiots of themselves on reality TV, there’s still something appealing about the idea of working hard for artistic glory — potentially failing and suffering rejection, but persevering nonetheless. Starting with Debbie Allen’s famous “you got big dreams, you want fame” speech over the opening titles, Fame follows a group of aspiring singers, dancers, actors and musicians from their auditions for New York’s competitive High School of Performing Arts until their graduation four years later. Among the familiar types are Denise (Naturi Naughton), a classically trained pianist who longs to

branch out creatively; good-looking Marco (Asher Book), who sings like Justin Timberlake; aspiring actress Jenny (Kay Panabaker), who’s too self-conscious; the privileged dancer Alice (Kherington Payne); the shticky wannabe film director Neil (Paul Iacono); and the misunderstood actor-rapper Mailk (Collins Pennie). Among the faculty are Kelsey Grammer as the stern but fair piano teacher and Bebe Neuwirth, formidable as always, as a dance instructor. (Frasier and Lilith don’t have any scenes together, sadly.) Megan Mullally plays a perky voice coach and Allen herself, in all of two scenes, appears as the school’s principal. Some of these kids are obviously going to make it — they’re going to live forever, as the song goes — and some aren’t. It’s pretty easy to figure out. Similarly, you can see some of the plot developments coming from a mile away in Allison Burnett’s script, even if you’ve never seen the original. You just know that the moment Denise’s strict parents see her on stage, singing in a way they never knew she could, they’ll achieve a newfound appreciation for her talent. Naughton, who played Lil’ Kim in Notorious, also sings the hell out of “Out Here on My Own,” the only song carried over from the original. (Fame plays over the closing credits.) And understandably, given Tancharoen’s background, the dance scenes dazzle. The mousey Jenny will flourish by senior year, the keyboard player who hates Bach will learn to enjoy classical music, and at some point they’ll all burst into spontaneous song and dance in the cafeteria. These are inescapable truisms. Familiar? Yes, but not nearly as vapid as most of the musical material out there that encourages teens to believe fame is all that matters.

HOLLYWOOD — When bestselling children’s author Maurice Sendak contacted Spike Jonze at the start of this decade and broached the idea of a big-screen adaptation of his illustrated classic Where the Wild Things Are, the filmmaker demurred. The book was a childhood favorite for Jonze, but how could he possibly translate a sweet story of a mere 10 sentences into a feature-length film? “I was very hesitant in terms of, like, when I first started talking to him about ideas,” Jonze said last month during a conversation about the process of creating a distinctive look for the movie’s big beasties. The film is being released Oct. 16. Jonze warmed to the idea, however, during a frosty patch in his own life. He re-read the storybook about a little boy in a wolf suit who imagines himself in a magical neverland at a low ebb in his life and the director had a thunderbolt of creativity, a sudden moment of clarity. He phoned Sendak, spewing a torrent of ideas about how to bring Wild Things to the screen. Instead of being proprietary about all the new narrative twists and embellishments, Sendak encouraged the director — or to be more precise, he demanded that the Being John Malkovich director be bold enough to put his own stamp on things. Jonze enlisted big-deal literary sensation Dave Eggers to co-write the screenplay but continued to solicit Sendak’s input. Because of his health, though, the 81-year-old author was unable to travel to Los Angeles to give his OK to the movie’s monsters, plotting and overall production design. Undeterred, Jonze sent Sendak reams of drawings and photos of the work in progress. And from 2004 to 2006 he took every opportunity to travel back to Connecticut to meet with Sendak in his studio. “That’s where we got all the tweaks on the characters,” Jonze remembered. “He was like, ‘The muzzle is too long on the bull’ or ‘The feathers on the rooster could be much more flamboyant!’ ” Once the production moved to Australia for principle photography, Eggers’ younger brother, Toph was consigned to shoot and edit a video diary for Sendak. For his part, the author remained fully committed. At Comic-Con International in July, Sendak left little doubt that he continued to have Jonze’s back after seeing the finished product. “I’ve never seen a movie that looked or felt like this,” Sendak said. “And it’s his personal ‘this.’ And he’s not afraid of himself. He’s a real artist that lets it come through in the work. So he’s touched me. He’s touched me very much.”

Dennis Quaid takes a run at horror and at Bill Clinton in new films The Orlando Sentinel When the going’s good, even potential bad news can seem a blessing. And things are going swimmingly for Dennis Quaid these days. His last film, G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA, had some of the worst advance press of any movie this year. No, he’s not the A-list leading man he was 10 years ago; film scholar David Thomson maintains he was always “second string,” without “the crust of vanity” but with a character actor’s “edge” and “need.” Quaid, 55, still does good work in ensembles (The Express, Vantage Point, Flight of the Phoenix) and still finds interesting leads (Smart People). And at this stage of his career, he’s not shy about hunting for hits — movies whose box office might boost his quote, extend his career. Pandorum, his latest, opening Sept. 25, has possibilities. With its resemblance to Alien and other claustrophobic sci-fi films, it could click with two audiences — sci-fi and horror. “I love the paranoia that this (spaceship) setting gives it,” Quaid says. “It’s a horror film, a psychological thriller, very Twilight Zone. It’s a myth, a story that points toward a deeper truth within ourselves that we have

no words for, really, about who we are when we strip away all those trappings of our day to day existence. You have this story that you can enjoy as a horror tale or a thriller. But the reason it scares you is that it points to yourself, to who you are in this life.” The big acting job on his plate now is the one he spent the summer at his Montana home prepping for, a movie now filming. The Special Relationship is about the historic and personal connection between Britain and America as embodied by Tony Blair (Michael Sheen) and Bill Clinton. “I’ve been eating everything that isn’t nailed down,” Quaid jokes. That was his preparation — putting on Clinton’s weight. And watching a lot of video of the former president. “I think I’m ready for it. I’ve got the voice. Just got to keep working on it and see where we can go with it. “I had a relationship with Bill Clinton when he was in the White House. He was the smartest person I’ve ever met, and that’s the key to him. He’s just a really really bright guy. A tough role, a challenging one. He’s never really been done in a movie, except in parody (John Travolta in Primary Colors). Travolta did a good job on him, but Clinton’s from Arkansas, I’m from Texas. I think I’ve got him.”

As the movie opens, Burt (John Krasinski) and Verona (Maya Rudolph) find out that Verona is pregnant. That development sends Burt and Verona on a journey to find a new definition of themselves as an expanded family unit. But mostly, Verona is a mirror to the people that she and Burt encounter on their road trip. And it’s in these vignettes that the film begins to feel less like an authentic exploration of identity than a condemnation of the very community the couple pretends to crave.

In Steven Soderbergh’s icicle-sharp portrait of a modern-day lady of the evening, the hooker with a heart of gold gives way to the fantasy date with the business acumen of a Wall Street banker. Soderbergh tracks several days in life of Chelsea (Sasha Grey), a self-employed call girl who commands $2,000 an hour and a clientele that can drop that sort of change without losing a wink of sleep. Buried deep beneath all that is a driven daughter of commerce who is just as ambitious as her high-rolling johns and every bit as stressed over the impact of the plunging economy. The film manages a career-spanning panache: Soderbergh taps into the impulses of his earliest endeavor, “sex, lies and videotape” as well as Ocean’s Eleven. Kool Kids to perform end-of-season recital By Deirdre Long dlong@annistonstar.com

CAST Kool Kids, a local youth performing arts company, will hold its end-of-season recital on Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of the Carver Community Center. The recital is comprised of song and dance numbers by ensembles and solo artists and should last about 30 minutes, said Joan McKinney, grant manager for Kool Kids. “We are amazed at what these youngsters have done and how hard they’ve worked,” she said. “They’ve accomplished much more than they realize.” The group was created last fall with a $10,000 grant from the Anniston Community Education Foundation. The program provides scholarships for 10 children, ages 4-19, from west Anniston — specifically, the area

affected by a class-action settlement with Solutia Inc. over PCBs contamination. “Performing arts aren’t usually included in education grants,” McKinney said. “The members (of the education foundation) stepped up and understood what performing arts can do for a youngster.” McKinney also notes that all of the children are on the honor roll at their respective schools. If any of the participants wish to continue their theater education, efforts will be made to get them a scholarship into Young Artists For A Better World, a for-fee performing arts program through CAST, McKinney said. WAMEGO, Kan. — When The Wizard of Oz first hit theaters in August 1939, flying monkeys were the least of America’s worries. The Depression, already almost a decade long, continued to grind away, and Germany stood on the verge of invading Poland, igniting a global conflagration that would envelop the United States just two years later. Moviegoers needed escape. And along came Judy Garland’s Dorothy Gale, a Kansas farm girl whose ruby slippers stepped out of the dreary present and into a Technicolor future, a magical Oz populated by talking scarecrows, Munchkins, bubble-riding witches and a con man of a wizard who showed that all we ever needed was within ourselves. Seventy years after its first screening, The Wizard of Oz headed back to theaters nationwide Sept. 23 for one night as Warner Bros. unveils a technologically updated and improved version ahead of its release on Blu-ray Hi-Def. “A film like this, which is so unlike any other motion picture and so beloved by the public all over the world, it deserves to be seen in the best possible light,” said George Felten-

The world is no less scary than it was 70 years ago, and the fantasy genre has tilted ever darker through the years — nightmarish images from Pan’s Labyrinth or the Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings films can make a wicked witch’s castle look downright homey. But despite its campy tone and crude special effects, The Wizard of Oz

has retained its popularity. Between regular television airings and the many fan conventions and festivals around the country, there’s no shortage of Oz. The Oz Museum in tiny Wamego, west of Topeka, draws tens of thousands of visitors to view some of 24,000 pieces of Oz memorabilia. “I think I first saw the movie when I was 4,” said Shelley O’Neil, 45, of Greeley, Colo., during a recent visit to the

museum. “I was sitting there just mesmerized until the monkeys came on and apparently I just started screaming. My mom had to come save me. I think we watched it every year.” The movie was groundbreaking for its use of the then-new Technicolor, its costumes and special effects, as well as its songs, including “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Osborne said one of the miracles of the film for him is all the ways it could have gone wrong. Producers originally wanted Shirley Temple as Dorothy and comedian W.C. Fields as the Wizard and considered using a real lion instead of a costumed actor. They also envisioned the Wicked Witch of the West as beautiful and cast the glamorous Gale Sondergaard before switching to Margaret Hamilton when others pushed for a disfigured, obviously evil villain. “You wonder, ‘Would it have been the same movie?” Osborne said. “I’m not sure it would be. I’m not saying it wouldn’t have been good but it might not have had the timelessness that it has because of the people involved.” Upon release, it was considered a moderate success, largely because it had cost so much to make. Only after its re-releases in 1947 and 1955 did it start turning a profit and finding wider audiences.

Anniston’s Knox Concert Series opens their 64th season Oct. 1 with a performance by country musician Sara Evans. “She fits well with the young crowd and country and pop music lovers,” said Julia Segars, chairwoman of the Knox Concert Series board. “We look for things that will appeal to all of our audience.” While Segars was not familiar with Evans before booking her, “I’ve listened since and I think she has a beautiful voice,” Segars said. Evans got her first commercial success with her 1998 album No Place That Far. The title track, a duet with Vince Gill, reached No. 1 on the country charts and the album went gold. Evans’ real Nashville breakthrough was three years later with her next album, Born to Fly. The record went double platinum and had four hit singles — “I Could Not Ask for More,”

“Saints and Angels,” “I Keep Looking,” and the title track. Evans released Restless in 2003 and Real Fine Place in 2005. Both albums went platinum. Evans was named Top Female Musician by the Academy for Country Music and Female Vocalist of the Year in the Radio & Records Reader’s Poll in 2006. That same year she also became the first country musician to join the cast of the popular TV show Dancing With Our Stars. She dropped off the show shortly into season because of her impending divorce from her husband of 13 years. In 2008, she married former University of Alabama quarterback Jay Barker. LOS ANGELES — When Jessica Biel, Lupe Fiasco and Isabel Lucas get together in Africa, they’ll have nowhere to go but up. The entertainers have signed on to climb the continent’s highest peak Biel — Mount Kilimanjaro, at more than 19,000 feet — to raise awareness about the need for clean water worldwide. The Summit on the Summit expedition, set for January, is the brainchild of singer and producer Kenna. His father suffered from waterborne diseases as a child in Ethiopia. Biel, 27, said she was “astonished” to learn that more than a billion people across the globe have no access to clean water. “This is a basic human necessity that needs to be addressed now,” Biel said in a

statement, adding that she’s proud to climb Kilimanjaro with the celebrity team “to help any way I can in order to raise awareness toward the life-threatening clean water crisis happening not only in Africa but around the world.” Justin Timberlake — who’s been romantically linked with Biel — may also be joining the climbers: He told GQ magazine earlier this year that he was preparing for a major mountain climb. Representatives for the climb declined to comment on the 28-year-old singer’s possible participation. Kenna said more celebrity climbers will be announced in the coming months, and he urges fans to follow the climb online. A donation as small as a dollar can provide 1,000 liters of clean water to those who need it, he said. “We wanted to make sure there was a way people knew this was an issue and a way for them to do something about it,” he said Wednesday. “This is a global issue. It’s not an Africa problem. It’s not a South America problem. It’s a world, global problem. In America, 11 million people go without clean water.”

Nintendo cutting Wii price by $50 Associated Press NEW YORK — Nintendo on Sunday will cut the price of its popular Wii console by $50 in a bid to broaden its appeal among potential new customers as it prepares to release the Wii FitPlus and New Super Mario Bros. games. The Wii, whose game control senses motions without having relying solely on buttons and levers, is the top selling console worldwide. The new $199.99 Wii will include the Wii Remote controller, Nunchuk controller and Wii Sports software. “Our research shows there are 50 million Americans thinking about becoming gamers, and this more affordable price point ... mean many of them can now ... find experiences that appeal to them,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales and marketing. Console price cuts are customary for the video game industry after the systems have celebrated a birthday or two, because they help lure in mass audiences who don’t want to spend large chunks of cash on them.

Bat Can Do: ‘Arkham Asylum’ gets it right Load up the Batarangs, kids. We’re going to the best Bat-themed amusement park in town. “Batman: Arkham Asylum” may be the greatest game of any genre I’ve played this year. It succeeds where so many other video game incarnations of Batman failed. The game rises above the side-scrolling antics of its predecessors and embraces the whole Batman universe. And did I mention Batman rules? I should have, because he does. Dan “Arkham Asylum” begins Whisenhunt with Batman dragging Joker Pushing Buttons back to Arkham, a prison for the criminally insane. But this time Joker made things a little too easy and Batman is wary. His suspicions are well-founded. It isn’t long before Joker springs his trap, sets the lunatics free and runs Batman through the Asylum-turned gauntlet. This game gets everything right. The developers hired Paul Dini, the master scribe for Batman: The Animated Series and hit show Lost, and two of the

actors from the series: Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker. (You may also know Hamill as Luke Skywalker from the Star Wars movies.) I’d like to diverge just slightly here and profess my love for Batman: The Animated Series. The show was my catnip when I was 13 years old. Yeah, half the episodes of the first season were about man-animal hybrid monsters and the hand-drawn animation style looks really choppy now. But Dini turned in some brilliant scripts. I highly recommend putting the second season in your Netflix queue. Hamill embodies the Joker. Conroy’s voice sounds like Justice. The game has a story mode, but it also has downloadable challenge missions utilizing Batman’s skills. Players can slip into “detective mode,” scanning the area around them. Batman can use grappling hooks, batarangs and the old-fashioned Bat-slap to the face. The PlayStation 3 offers a challenge mode with Joker as a playable character. Joker has the same moves as Batman. His challenges are available as a free download on the PlayStation store. I’m not wild about having to unlock them all, even if PlayStation did give them away. I’ve enjoyed the button-pushing endurance test of

the first challenge. Could we get a Joker story mode as a downloadable mission? I would gladly pay for that. Batman also has several neat challenges. The one I’ve been working on involves taking down numerous thugs silently. Because Batman can’t take a bullet (no body armor in this version) he has to climb, crawl and sneak around the bad guys, catching one alone and off-guard. Try and picture doing that about a dozen more times with guards looking for you. It’s frustrating, but it keeps you coming back for more. I haven’t played many games where I feel like I’m totally embodying the central character. The design elements of this game, mixed with the character voices I grew up with, make for an almost surreal experience. Giving it five buttons out of five really seems unfair. But that’s all I have to give. And though this game grants many of my fanboy wishes, can I make just one more? Make a sequel and set it in an open-world Gotham City, like a Grand Theft Auto game. Give me the chance to jump around on roof tops and I will shed tears of joy on my PlayStation controller.
