Van Gogh’s letters show method, not madness By TOBY STERLING AMSTERDAM — While Vincent van Gogh has become almost as famed for his troubled mind as for his paintings, a new exhibition in the Van Gogh Museum seeks to remind us there was more method than madness to his style. In honor of the publication of a new compendium of all the artist’s known correspondence, the museum has put more than 100 personal letters in which he discusses his craft on display alongside the actual paintings. Museum Director Axel Ruger said the exhibit, opening Friday, is arranged to make a visitor feel “as if you are being led through the collection with Van Gogh giving commentary on his own work.” Seeing the letters next to the paintings underlines Van Gogh’s professionalism, which is sometimes overlooked amid spectacular biographical details such as his mental illness, his apparent amputation of part of his own left ear after a quarrel, and his suicide in 1890 at age 37. In the letters — known from recent books and films — Van Gogh writes about both the philosophy of painting and the technical details. “I’m working on those peasants around a dish of potatoes again,” he said in a letter to his brother Theo on April 9, 1885, referring to one of his earliest masterpieces, “The Potato Eaters.” The note also contains a sketch of the painting. Van Gogh, who was influenced by the Impressionists, said he felt there was “life” in the piece, which he started in the day and continued working on by lamp light on a large canvas. “The beautiful effects of the light in nature require one to work very fast” he said, adding he didn’t feel he could yet compare with 17th-century Dutch masters such as Rembrandt. “At the point where I now am, though, I see a chance of giving a felt impression

(but) never exactly — for one sees nature through one’s own temperament.” The compendium includes all 820 known letters by Van Gogh, tracing his youth and late start as a painter to his spectacular blossoming in the late 1880s. “The number of letters isn’t really unusual but the literary quality of the letters, that’s special,” said Curator Leo Jansen, one of three experts who spent 15 years on the project. “You literally can’t find it in any other artist: he was painter and writer at the same time.” Van Gogh’s letters were previously translated to English in 1958. The new compendium includes 20 new letters as well as complete versions of some letters previously only published in part. More importantly, Jansen said, it gives more precise translations and includes reproductions of more than 2,000 paintings Van Gogh makes reference to. In all, it offers an unusually complete picture of the mental world of one of the world’s great artists. For Van Gogh fans not interested in buying the 6-volume set, the entire compilation has been put online as a free, searchable database in French, Dutch and English — the three languages in which the painter wrote. The database includes images of the sketches con-
tained within in the letters, which are often stunning in their own right. “Here’s a sketch of the latest canvas I’m working on, another sower,” Van Gogh said in a letter to his brother Theo, on Nov. 21, 1888. “Immense lemon yellow disc for the sun,” he wrote. “Green-yellow sky with pink clouds. The field is violet, the sower and the tree Prussian blue. “ Van Gogh goes on to specify that he planned to put it on a size No. 30 canvas, 91 centimeters x 72 centimeters (about 36 x 28 inches.) The drawing is easily identifiable as one of several versions of “The Sower” on display at the museum. Jansen said that letter is not at all unusual — Van Gogh often gave indications of the colors he planned to use, and sometimes went further in describing the effect he was chasing by using certain color combinations. Though Van Gogh was a social and financial failure, selling just one work in his lifetime, “he was not a hysterical, irrational man: he was very methodical,” Jansen said. “He chooses his goal very carefully and works toward it step by step.” The book and Web site were published on Oct. 6; the museum exhibition opens Oct. 9, 2009 and runs through Jan. 3, 2010.

New England Journal of Medicine, and you have a smallscreen squad that would rival the staff at the Mayo Clinic. “So often in television you have a certain number of things that enter the wind, and you end up with a lot of shows in a certain area,� said Gail Berman, the former entertainment president for Fox TV, who now serves as an executive producer for Mercy. “This year it’s medical. You just go with the flow.� Not that the onslaught won’t get some executives’ hearts racing. Lloyd Braun, Berman’s creative partner, remembers that he hesitated to sign off on a promising pilot back when he was co-chairman of ABC entertainment, only because the network had already watched a number of other efforts flatline. At the very last minute, he agreed to give the program a chance. The series: Grey’s Anatomy. Of course, Grey’s isn’t exactly in the pink these days, thanks to the departure of T.R. Knight and the behindthe-scenes whining of Katherine Heigl, leading the new competitors to believe they can pick up some of the aging series’ regulars. But the clientele they really covet are the fans of ER, which ended its staggering, highly lucrative 15-year run last season. “It’s the 800-pound gorilla — and it’s gone,� said Dario Scardapane, creator of Trauma. “I think a lot of people want to find out what the 21st-century version of a medical show will be. I know that’s what we’re shooting for.� The formula dates back to an era long before everyone wanted to be examined by George Clooney. Medic, starring Richard Boone, was making the rounds in 1954 and series such as Julia, M*A*S*H and St. Elsewhere have served as milestones in TV history. “With the big three — the legal show, the cop show, the medical show — they all have kind of built-in stakes,� Scardapane said. “It’s life or death, and nobody’s numb to life or death.�

NEW YORK — Make no mistake, Rosanne Cash fully understands the value of the sheet of yellow lined paper her father handed to her one summer day in 1973. Now she’s giving the world a peek. Back then, she was 18, just graduated from high school, a daughter of divorce eager to spend time with her dad and learn the family business. She tagged along on a concert tour and talked music during the long bus rides. When Johnny Cash grew alarmed at the songs Rosanne didn’t know, he sat down with a pad and pen. What he produced was a syllabus worthy of a master professor: Johnny Cash’s list of the “100 Essential Country Songs.” Twelve of those songs make up The List, Cash’s new CD. Her first covers album includes duets with Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy and Rufus Wainwright. Cash had put the list away after learning many of the songs. She had her own path to forge. It was forgotten in a box of memorabilia until she happened upon it late in 2005 while writing narrative portions of her “Black Cadillac” stage show. She talked about it during the concerts and fans would inevitably ask when she was going to record the songs. Her husband, music producer and guitarist John Leventhal, no doubt smiled. “My husband has been telling me for 17 years, `Your voice is really well-suited to these songs,’ and I would go, `I’m a songwriter, I’m a songwriter,” she said. “Well, it turns out my voice really is wellsuited to these songs.” The disc showcases some of the best singing in Cash’s career, as she faces the challenge of carrying melodies other than her own and putting her stamp on songs already well known. The often spare arrangements also emphasize Leventhal’s guitar. Cash begins with “Miss the Mississippi and You,” which the father of country music, Jimmie Rodgers, recorded in 1932. She ends with the Carter Family’s “Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow,” which always reminds Cash of her step-aunt Helen Carter, who taught her the guitar. The disc’s emotional center-

Recording meant finding the songs’ emotional core. “It’s like going through tunnels and layers,” she said. The songs are some of the things that connect father and daughter and, Rosanne believed, it was time to claim the legacy. “I don’t have that young person’s feeling of trying to get away from my ancestry and parents and what they passed on,” she said. “In fact, I want to embrace it, so I can show it and pass it along to my own (five) kids. It’s just unseemly at my age (54) to be doing that kind of `chip on your shoulder’ rebellion.” Besides the personal connection, it’s important to keep the songs alive, she said. “Can you imagine America
without this music?” she said. “It’s who we are, culturally. It’s as important as the Civil War, these songs. Personally, I would hate to see them become something you just visit at a museum. I think they are living and breathing and part of our cultural legacy.” The List is probably part of Cash’s grieving process, said Jay Orr, historian for the Country Music Hall of Fame. He recalled the Everly Brothers putting out an album, Songs Our Daddy Taught Us, during the peak of their success. “The songs benefit from being dusted off and shared again in new arrangements that are contemporary and appealing,” Orr said. She’s often thought about how the list would be different if her father had compiled it closer to his death in 2003. George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today” would probably be on it. He loved Springsteen’s Nebraska album and would likely have included one of those songs. Her father wasn’t so modest as to leave his own material off the list, but you’ll have to guess what it is.
NEW YORK — Alicia Keys has influenced many lives with her soulful, heartaching pianodriven songs for almost a decade. Now that the 12-time Grammy winner has established herself as one of music’s brightest stars, Keys is ready to inspire others — without singing a tune. Keys is launching AK Worldwide, a new company that will handle the singer’s projects, especially those outside of music. “It really explores the ways I can affect the world in a positive way, even outside of music,” Keys said in an interview Tuesday. “It is really about finding ways to bring forth things into the world that will give you and all the people that encounter them, and myself, inspiration,” she said. The first project for the 28-year-old is The Barber’s Daughters, a handcrafted jewelry line engraved with messages of hope and wisdom. “The words, when you read them, they really do resonate with you. They kind of inspire you to want to find that place in yourself,” she said, sporting a silver oval ring that read: “May you find inspiration and meaning soaked in the wonders of the imagination cradled in compassion of the heart and hold a will to make difference.” Keys also will launch a new Web site, iamasuperwoman.com, devoted to spotlighting inspirational women and causes that will fill a missing gap in the blogosphere, Keys said. “It really calls out to all those brilliant, amazing, fantastic women every day that are doing their thing and need kind of a community to support each other,” she said. Keys said the creativity required to be a businesswoman has spilled over to her music, and that it’s reflected on her fourth studio CD, The Element of Freedom, to be released Dec. 1. “We have the ability to be totally free, to be totally unstoppable, and there’s no heights that you can’t reach,” Keys said. “So I totally love that and that’s what the music feels like, and that’s what everything that I’m doing sounds like.” The lead single, “Doesn’t Mean Anything,” teaches people that having success is unimportant unless there’s someone to share it with, Keys said. The next single, “Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart,” is “mean, mean, mean,” she said. The CD finds Keys working again with her musical partner, Crucial Keys, and producer Jeff Bhasker, who recently produced tracks on the latest albums from Jay-Z and Kanye West. Keys credits Oprah Winfrey and other business-minded people with turning on her entrepreneurial spirit.

Love” and “Vertical Rhythm” are pure catchiness, infused with personalpolitical sentiment and staccato riffs. Ditto, known as much for her plussize fashion savvy as her booming voice, has the kind of presence that can cross boundaries. On Music for Men, she channels Gloria Gaynor and Chaka Khan just as much as punk muses. Built to Spill gets deep on ‘There Is No Enemy’ Built to Spill There Is No Enemy
It may be that There Is No Enemy, but Built to Spill’s latest album has such a melancholy vibe, there may as well be. Decidedly darker than 2006’s You In Reverse, the Boise quintet tones down its trademark guitar-driven rock on its seventh CD. Enemy is still a rock record, but the tempos are taken down a touch to carry frontman Doug Martsch’s musings on mortality and the meaning of life. He opens “Done” with “Loneliness is getting hard to perceive/Seems it never comes or it never leaves,” and closes with a refrain of “It’s already done, it’s already done.” “It doesn’t matter if you’re good or smart,” he sings on “Things Fall Apart,” a languid tune punctuated by a lone happy horn. But all is not hopeless. Guitarists Brett Netson and Jim Roth, bassist Brett Nelson and drummer Scott Plouf get upbeat on “Good of Boredom” as Martsch sings, “Most of my dreams
have come true.” On “Nowhere Lullaby,” a slow track rich with reverb, he concludes “everyone gets through the night and everyone wakes up all right.” He takes the sentiment further on the album’s cheeriest track, “Planting Seeds”: “We can make it if we try/If we don’t it’s still all right/Because your mind is still alive.” There Is No Enemy, but according to Built to Spill, there’s still plenty to think about. Backstreet Boys’ latest is weak Backstreet Boys This Is Us
The newest CD from the Backstreet Boys features a number of uptempo, club-sounding songs — but the weak effort from this quartet won’t have you running to the dance floor. This Is Us, the group’s seventh studio album, is full of boring, uneventful tracks — though hitmaking producers like RedOne, TPain, Jim Jonsin and Ryan Tedder help out. What may be most disappointing is that Swedish producer Max Martin — who helmed classic grooves for the boy band like “I Want it That Way” and “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” — fails to present anything as addictive on This Is Us. “Straight Through My Heart,” the lead single, is too average as is “She’s a Dream,” a poorly written love tale. The worst is “PDA,” where the boys claim they will be “kissing, touching with my hands
all over your booty” at Starbucks, the club, restaurant, grocery store, movies and beach. Stop. Please. Thank you. At times, the production of the songs proves to be too powerful — pushing the boys to the background, especially on the Britney Spears-sounding “Masquerade.” The group should have recorded more songs with Claude Kelly, Soulshock and Karlin. Those producers work on “Bye Bye Love” and “If I Knew Then,” the only standouts on the dragging This Is Us. Gilberto takes on modern Braziliana Bebel Gilberto All in One
The daughter of bossa nova god Joco Gilberto has a sweet supple voice and a sandy sense of Brazilian musicality whose serene flavorful sway never lets you forget that she’s daddy’s little girl. Carlinhos Brown’s shoulder-shifting ballad “Nossa Senhora” and a breezy, piano-heavy version of her pop’s “Bim Bom” with Daniel Jobim (grandson of Antonio Carlos Jobim) do the beach trick nicely. But rather than roll blithely through nothing but samba, the slight vocalist makes some interesting non-bossa choices. The weirdly Beatles-like title track, an electro-slinky Latin take on Bob Marley’s “Sun Is Shining,” and a Mark Ronson-produced version of Stevie Wonder’s “The Real Thing” that manages to mash up the Motown Sound with blaxploitation-worthy theatricality are deli-
cious. There are John Barryinspired elements found within and even a surprisingly corny but dear version of the kitschy Hollywood classic “Chica Chica Boom Chic” once sung by Carmen Miranda. Other than those moments, little of All in One radiates the adventure that audiences found in the subtle electronic exotica of 2000’s “Tanto Tempo” or any of her recent excursions in modern Braziliana. That’s OK. What her new album lacks in excitement is made up by Gilberto’s confidence as a songwriter and balladeer. —A.D. Amorosi, McClatchy Newspapers

For any rebellious gal who’s slashed her hair and skirts short and not cared, Gossip’s “Dimestore Diamond” is nothing short of an anthem. It’s the best song on Music for Men, the trio’s newest album, which diverges from the band’s usual bluesy garage rock to beat-centric dance tunes sleekly produced by Grammy winner Rick Rubin. “Everybody knows/ But no one can tell/ Homemade haircut/ But she wears it well/ She’s a dimestore diamond,” trills singer Beth Ditto, her Southern twang echoed over a killer bass line. Longtime Gossip fans may miss the group’s older sound — fabulously messy and DIY between Ditto’s growl and guitarist Brace Paine’s stompy punk-blues lines — but those open to the band’s new direction will be rewarded. While some songs coast a little too much on synth bleeps and club beats, tunes such as “Heavy Cross,” “Men in

Peter Billingsley was on the other side of the world at Bora Bora’s St. Regis Resort describing his working conditions for making the new comedy Couples Retreat. The phrase “working conditions” may not be entirely appropriate. “To my left is this beautiful beach,” he said by phone. “I’m in a house built on stilts over the water where we shot several scenes. On the deck there’s a hot tub ... you can jump from the hot tub into the sea. In the floor is this big glass pane, and I can see fish swimming under my feet.” If the name Peter Billingsley rings a bell, it’s because when he was only 11 he starred in one of the most beloved movies of all time — A Christmas Story. He played Ralphie, the kid desperate to get his hands on a Red Ryder BB gun. Now Billingsley, 38, makes his directing debut with Couples Retreat, opening Friday. It’s about Midwesterners who get a great rate on a tropical vacation, then find that as part of the deal they all have to undergo marriage counseling. Among the players are Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Kristin Davis, Jason Bateman, Faizon Love, Kristen Bell, Malin Akerman and Kali Hawk. “You could say that the water here is a cast member, too,” Billingsley said. “I mean, it’s really that blue color you see in the movie. Remember Bomb Pops when you were a kid? That blue band on the bottom? That’s exactly the color of the water here. I’ve never seen anything like that in the Bahamas or Hawaii. All you have to do is turn on the camera, and the ocean makes you look like a visual genius. “People in Hollywood would say, ’Oh boy, you shot
in Bora Bora? That’s so far away. It must have been hard,”’ Billingsley said. “Well, cry me a river. What it was, was heaven on Earth. Whatever logistical problems we encountered — because we were filming in a place where they don’t usually make movies — we dealt with gratefully.” Billingsley acted for years before and after 1983’s Christmas Story. But for the last decade he has worked mostly as a producer of movies (Iron Man, Zathura) and TV shows (Dinner for Five). He said he was fortunate that for his directing debut he was working with friends. Vaughn has been his best bud since they met two decades ago at an audition. And Billingsley spent several years with Favreau on Dinner for Five. In Couples Retreat, he was working from a screenplay by Vaughn and Favreau. Even when he was on the set of A Christmas Story he was fascinated by the mechanics of movie making, Billingsley said. “I always had an interest in the process. Between setups and even when I wasn’t in a scene I’d be on the set. I was curious about the decisions they were making, about lenses and camera angles. “Even after that film I’d seek out advice and guidance from Bob Clark” — the writer/director of A Christmas Story. “When I told him I wanted to be behind the camera he said, ‘Go spend time in the editing room. That’s where you’ll learn the most important lessons about directing.”’ Almost 30 years later, do fans still recognize him? “Yeah. Usually around Christmas time. Right after it’s played for 24 hours straight on cable. “But I don’t mind being remembered for A Christmas Story. I’m certainly proud of that movie. And it’s nice to be associated with a project that has given so many people so much joy.”
Couples Retreat was made because of its sunny, sandy location, scenic Bora Bora. Judging from the light, cast members slept late and took it pretty easy, even in the “We rise at dawn” scenes. Pals Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau team up again. They co-wrote this and still love working together, even though their banter isn’t what it was in their Swingers days. And they pitch in to help a pal behind the camera. Director Peter Billingsley, “Ralphie” in A Christmas Story, befriended them when they first got to Hollywood. But are those reasons for making the movie, or excuses? Couples, a sputtering if sporadically amusing misfire, packed a lot of actors off to a pretty location and gave them nothing funny or deep to do. Four couples — Vaughn and Malin Akerman, Favreau and Kristin Davis, Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell and Faizon Love and Kali Hawk — are lured (they’re friends) to Eden, a resort where PowerPoint Type A’s (Bateman and Bell) hope to save their micro-managed marriage. Seeing as how they’re not believable or likable as a couple, you wonder why. Joey and Lucy (Favreau and Davis) are happily cheating on one another, seen in the TV commercials for the movie, scenes omitted from the finished film. Shane (Love) is newly divorced and trying to keep up with a 20-year-old girlfriend. And Dave (Vaughn), their dependable pal, is just there for support. Naturally he and wife Ronnie (Akerman) hit a rough patch the moment their marriage goes under the microscope. With yoga and counseling (John Michael Higgins and Ken Jeoung earn a grin as therapists), massages and sessions with the arrogant guru in charge (Jean Reno), these twosomes will re-light the marital fires. None of the couples is interesting enough to carry the movie, and a sauna riff-off is only an echo of vintage Vince and Jon. They’re reduced to kiddie potty jokes and tacky sex gags here. When your big pay-off is a “Guitar Hero” playoff, “retreat” is the word the writers should embrace. Unless they have their hearts set on that trip to Bora Bora.

Associated Press What’s so funny about so many black women wanting “white” hair? Plenty, it turns out, in Chris Rock’s surprisingly insightful documentary, Good Hair. The well-known history of black people straightening their natural curls is more tragedy than comedy, rooted in the bygone belief that all things European were better than anything African. But Rock sheds new light on this old story through a poignant mix of interviews, investigation and his trademark satire. More than a dozen famous and beautiful black women sit for Rock’s camera, ranging from the sage Maya Angelou to video vixen Melyssa Ford to an interior designer with a skin disease that has left her proudly bald. Their testimony illuminates today’s reality: Black women who straighten their hair are not ashamed of their heritage — like women the world over, they just want to work with what they have. Men don’t escape Rock’s scrutiny, either, as the notoriously permed Rev. Al Sharpton and IceT are called to account. Sharpton recalls his mentor James Brown buying him his first ’do before they met with President Ronald Reagan, and IceT describes going to high school with his hair in curlers — the bigger the better. Other men sport a variety of eye-catching styles, such as the “shag” — picture a puffy mullet. There are many scenes in beauty and barber
shops across the country, where the various meanings, rules and ramifications of black hairstyles are discussed. But the best revelations come when Rock examines the sodium hydroxide relaxer that turns nappy heads silky, and the origins of the shorn human hair that is “weaved” into shorter tresses to create the illusion of length and fullness. Rock watches sodium hydroxide eat through chicken flesh and dissolve an aluminum soda can. In India, he visits a Hindu temple where women ceremonially shave their heads and a shady character who describes snipping the hair off sleeping women. In Los Angeles, Rock watches an Indian businessman with a suitcase full of bone-straight locks bargain with a black hairstylist who brags about reselling movie stars’ weaves to average Janes. The film’s narrative is driven by the Bronner Bros. Hair Show, where top stylists create Las Vegas-style productions to compete for a $20,000 prize. The outlandish contest, which features little actual hairstyling, is a perfect metaphor for the inherent absurdity of a billion dollar industry built on metal-eating chemicals, stolen ponytails and thousand dollar-plus weaves. This is exactly why Rock is the perfect Good Hair host. His ad-libbed quips and silly-serious questions put interview subjects and viewers at ease with this sometimes painful reality, keeping them laughing instead of crying. And when Rock ventures into a hair store trying to sell some kinky “black hair” to the Asian owner, his comedy cuts to the root of the issue in a way Ken Burns never could. “Everyone want straight hair,” the owner says. “It look more natural.”

JSU professor creates local opera scene By Ben Flanagan Special to The Star
Professor Nathan Wight arrived in Calhoun County six years ago, and his first impressions of the arts and entertainment community were favorable, thanks to organizations like the Knox Concert Series and CAST. Since then, he has established an opera program in a place where there was no such thing. He knew Birmingham and Atlanta had somewhat of a scene to offer, but he found the right potential at Jacksonville State University and hit the ground running with a slew of high-quality opera productions. A baritone from Kermit, Texas, Wight has performed in both national and international productions, solidifying his passion for the craft and willingness to spread awareness throughout Calhoun County. He recently talked to The Star about college students’ perceptions of opera, his first impressions of the area’s art community and Bugs Bunny’s contributions to the art form. What was your opinion on Calhoun County’s arts scene when you arrived here in 2003? I was impressed that the Knox Concert Series was here in such a small community. It’s bigger than it looks. I was struck by the fact that there was no opera in this area except for Birmingham or Atlanta, so we started an opera company here. In what ways has it changed since then? I think Music at McClellan coming in and the number of CAST performances, they’ve become more visible. There’s certainly a lot more art opportunities here than there have been in the past, speaking of performing arts, of course. How has the community responded to the increased presence of opera? It’s been very favorably. In our first season here, we had about 120 people that came to the first performances that we did. This past year, we had over 2,000 that came to our performances. It’s grown. I wish it wasn’t so hard to get word out about it. What’s the annual interest of JSU students in the opera program? Have you seen consistency in the enrollment and awareness? Among the music students, yeah, there’s a consistent awareness of it. Among the general population, there’s still that general surprise that you have that student that comes in that’s not willing to go see an opera because that’s the fat lady singing with the horns. Then they come to an opera performance, and they realize that’s not what it is. Bugs Bunny didn’t really do a service for opera. There is an aspect of opera that is that, but we try not to touch on that too much because it’s beyond the scope of what we’re doing here. We dwell more on the lighter side of opera and the side that’s fun, usually. Are you pleased with the venues in which you hold your current productions?

Dr. Nathan Wight, creator of Jacksonville State University’s Opera Theatre, sits at the piano in his office on campus. Nope. There needs to be a theater here in this community that is worthy of musical productions. Probably the best theater that I have access to is of course the Stone Center, but it’s not really for musical productions. It’s more of a spoken theater, and sound travels differently. It’s better than what I do my fall productions in, which is basically an empty space. We’ve done the best with what we’ve had. What kind of productions from the JSU opera department can the area look forward to in the coming months? In January, we’re doing a children’s opera, called “Saint George and the Dragon,” by a composer named Sterling Tinsley from Portland, Ore., and it’s an opera that’s specifically geared towards kindergarten through about fifth or sixth grade. We’ll do a week’s worth of performances at JSU. We have a performance scheduled at the University of Alabama. We’ve got two performances in Pell City and possibly one in Sylacauga. We’re going to take it on the road, and it will be a traveling show in March and May where we can do it for elementary schools in their performance space. It’s going to be a lot of fun. As a fan of opera, where do you go outside of Calhoun County to hear what you’d consider highquality performances?
Atlanta’s pretty good. I’m partial to Houston if I could ever get there. Of course the Met and Chicago. How has your youth apprentice program helped to expose young people to opera and art forms like it? It’s been a benefit to the university because it gets high school students on campus. I think it’s been a benefit to the other music programs around here because it shows students what the next step is in learning about arts and what the potential is from where they are. How can Calhoun County continue to improve itself as a cultural arts center in Alabama and the Southeast? Hmm. So many answers. I think that there needs to be a collaboration of all the arts entities and a stepping up of all of the arts supporters to come together and create an atmosphere that will benefit all of us. I’ve tried to work with everybody here that’s in the musical side of things. We tend to focus on our own individual programs, and we don’t take a step back and look at the big picture of everything that’s going on. We’re all trying to dip into the same community if we can make a concerted effort to create an art governing board.

One moment they’ll be here and the next they won’t — literally. That’s typical for Garry Carson and Kelsey Kara, the starring members of a Las Vegas illusion show that will be in Anniston on Oct. 13 for their “Art of Imagination” show, presented by Family Links. Carson, a professional magician, started his career after a snow sledding accident in Colorado when he was 14. “I wanted to be a football player but after my accident I couldn’t play contact sports,” he said. “My parents bought me a magic kit while I was in the hospital recovering and my career began then.” This show goes far beyond the age-old favorite of pull-
ing a quarter from someone’s ear, as the show includes a spotted leopard and panther. Carson, who has designed for Siegfried and Roy and David Copperfield, promises to bring a show filled with wow that the entire family will enjoy. “It’s not just a kids show that the adults will enjoy, but a show for adults that has clean language and appropriate dress that the kids will love,” he said. Kara, who has been with the show since it began 15 years ago, will help Carson deliver laughs and magic to the audience. And in true magician assistant style, she’ll be cut in half as part of the performance. This award-winning show is sponsored by Anniston Morning Rotary. All ticket
sales and proceeds will go to support Family Link’s LINC ID Program. The program, which is in its 10th year, provides students with an incentive to make good choices throughout high school by promoting a violence-free and drug-free lifestyle. More than 2,400 Calhoun County students participate in the program, which offers a discount card for use with area merchants in exchange for a pledge to be drug and violence free, said Stephanie Stamps, prevention coordinator for Family Links. His grandmother had a tradition that she would get a present on her grandchildren’s birthdays, and it had to be “something creative,” Taylor said. ‘ODST’ focuses on the little guy A “Halo” game that doesn’t star Master Chief? Welcome to “Halo 3: ODST,” a brand-new adventure that focuses on the little guy. That’s right, no overpowered spartan to control in this game. Instead, you take the reigns of an ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper). These characters exert more passion and heart than any green robot, and it makes the campaign mode tops in the series. Finding an artifact in the hub world triggers many of the levels. These items trigger a flashback that puts you in control of an ODST soldier. You then play out what happened to them and learn clues on Chris what you must do in the process. Pittman “Halo” veterans will feel right at Pushing Buttons home with the look, feel and control of the game. The biggest addition is the visor, a tool you can use to see enemies and important artifacts in dark places. This little gadget comes in handy, as the environment can be quite dark at times. The campaign is rather short, but the layout and flow make it worthwhile. Firefight is the reason to get excited about the game. It takes “Halo’s” cooperative experiences of the past to a new level. You can form a team with up to three other people to battle waves of enemies on several different maps. It sounds mindless, but there is strategy to be had here. The score features a multiplier that will give you extra points under certain conditions, such as a headshot or multi-kill. The highest scores will require taking advantage of several of these multipliers in a short time. The enemies that spawn will be of increasing difficulty as you progress through each wave. Skulls that affect
certain abilities will also come into play at the end of a round or set. The “catch” skull is my favorite. It arms the enemies with extra grenades, and they’re not afraid to toss them. The best part is working with three other people and completely owning all facets of the map. Camping in certain locations works pretty well, but the A.I. is crafty and can overwhelm even the best of players. One thing to note is that Firefight does not feature any matchmaking. That means you can only play with friends and not randoms. Sadly, Firefight suffers from intense latency when playing with people in far away states and countries. It feels like playing a slideshow at times, and that’s certainly not a feature of the game. The cooperative campaign suffers from this lag as well. Good luck playing the final level with four players from far away locations. The net code could have used optimization. A second disc comes in the package that includes the entire “Halo 3” multiplayer experience. It also introduces three new maps that can’t be found anywhere else. Be sure to keep the “ODST” disk handy. It will serve as the utility needed to play the “Halo: Reach” beta next year. Speaking of “Reach,” I have high hopes the series will go in a different direction with that game. The teaser art suggests the possibility of class-based multiplayer, which would be a breath of fresh air. That’s not to say that “ODST” is bad. I just feel that the series has played a little too similar for almost a decade now. It’s time to mix things up. “ODST” is essentially an expansion pack to “Halo 3,” but is still well worth getting for first-person-shooter fans. The campaign is short but solid, and Firefight will be the hot multiplayer mode to play for the next several months. Halo 3: ODST gets 4.5 buttons out of 5.
Why everyone should be watching the PSPgo By Brian Crecente Kotaku.com
Video games stored on a disc of plastic and tucked away in a case are approaching extinction. You can quibble about the when and the how of this happening, but the inevitability of games being sold online like music, free of their plastic prisons, is certain. The first real sign of that step away from games sheathed in cardboard and plastic sold in a bricks and mortar store hit earlier this month in the form of the PSPgo. Sony’s latest Playstation Portable is a smaller, sleeker system that has no way of playing a physical game on it. There is no disc drive of any sort; instead there is internal memory, a wireless Internet connection and a virtual store run by Sony. “This is an interesting step to test the waters on a digital only product,” Eric Lempel, director of Playstation
Network Operations, told Kotaku. “We are thrilled and completely cognizant that this is the platform for a digital gamer. “It’s a really exciting time.” While gamers can visit the Playstation Store directly on their Playstation Portable or PSPgo, the PSP has to store its games on Memory Sticks, while the PSPgo has 16GBs of internal memory and still has the ability to store titles on Memory Sticks. Top-tier games can take up half a gig to one a half gigs of memory each. The Playstation Store currently has about 100 PSP games available for download with hundreds more in the pipeline, Lempel said. To purchase a game, you just need to find it and download it directly to the device. The sale is automatically charged to a credit card or taken out of credit which can be purchased at retail stores. Both the PSP and PSPgo can also display pictures and movies and play
music. While the online store both rents and sells movies, it currently doesn’t offer music. That’s something that could change in the future, Lempel said. “It is something we have considered and are looking at,” he said. “It’s a natural fit, but there is nothing to talk about right now.” Sony faced quite a few hurdles in launching their download-only gaming platform. Some retailers, which make a bulk of their money off of game not hardware sales, were reluctant to carry the device. And game publishers had to be convinced that the games, no longer on a physical disc, wouldn’t be open to greater piracy. Under Sony’s system, games have to be “activated” after they have been installed on a PSPgo or Playstation Portable and can only be installed on a total of five different PSPs or PSPgos in their lifetime. Those steps, Lempel says, helped
convince third-party publishers that their device was a safe bet. “We’re seeing everyone on board with the PSPgo,” he said. While the $250 PSPgo is a download-only device, Sony isn’t putting all of their eggs in one basket. Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida told Kotaku that the company intends to continue its support of the $170 Playstation Portable, which allows gamers to download and play those same games or use the device’s built-in UMD drive to play games. Moving forward, he said, new games will be released in both the UMD and digital formats. Sony was sure to make it as easy as possible to release a game in both formats, Lempel said. “It’s not that hard to do, but there is some work involved,” he said. The hope is that games will hit both the retail store and Sony’s online Playstation Store at the same time and for the same price.

History lessons don’t have to be long, boring lectures from huge textbooks. “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness: American Art from the Yale University Art Gallery,” the newest exhibit at the Birmingham Museum of Art, offers a glimpse of American history through the eyes of the artists who lived it. This collection of more than 230 paintings, drawings, photographs, furniture, silver and other works give insight to American life from the colonial era through the late 1800s. The exhibit includes many icons of American art, such as John Trumbull’s series of eight Revolutionary War scenes and his Declaration of Independence, which is featured on the back of the $2 bill. The exhibit also offers art in several forms by Paul Revere, such as a silver tea pot and his famous engraving, The Bloody Massacre Perpetrated in King-Street Boston on March 5th 1770. NEW YORK — Some of the politicians zinged by David Letterman over the years for their indiscretions are offering pity and advice for the scandalized talk show host. South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford says Letterman could benefit from his confession that he had affairs with women who worked on the Late Show. And former Florida Rep. Mark Foley says, “I feel sorry for Dave — I take no glee.” Most of Letterman’s targets who were approached by The Associated Press refrained from jeering at his plight — or saying anything at all. But Sanford sent Letterman warm wishes. “Both my thoughts and my prayers are with him,” he said Tuesday after a speaking engagement at a Rotary Club meeting in Easley, S.C. In June, Sanford seemed fair game for comedy after he disappeared from the state (and his wife) for a five-day rendezvous with an Argentine woman he called his soul mate. The governor “didn’t really enjoy this year’s Fourth of July. He left his favorite firecracker in Argentina,” Letterman joked soon after. “There’s a lot more introspection and soul-searching on the way down than there is on the way up,” said Sanford, who is under investigation by South Carolina’s Ethics Commission, in addressing his woes as well as Letterman’s. “He can be a better person for it.” In March 2008, Letterman was taking potshots at Eliot Spitzer, then governor of New York, who was embroiled in an investigation into a high-end prostitution operation. “It’s so sunny and bright outside that, earlier today, Eliot Spitzer came out of a brothel squinting,” Letterman cracked in a monologue. But in Spitzer’s case, he didn’t stop at lampooning. During an indignant rant, he called for the scandalized governor to step down. “I mean, can you imagine,”

(backside) out of here?” Unlike Spitzer, who resigned, Letterman seems secure in his job as host of CBS’ Late Show, nearly a week after his bombshell revelations of having had sex with women on his staff (a disclosure prompted by an alleged $2 million blackmail threat against him). But considering his acknowledgment of past “creepy” behavior, it’s kind of creepy to revisit a joke such as this one from a March 2008 show: “Let me ask you a question. Do you think it’s too soon to be hitting on Mrs. Eliot Spitzer?” In another monologue, Letterman tweaked Sen. David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican whose telephone number was found in 2007 among those called by an escort service that prosecutors said was a call girl ring. Vitter “admitted he’s been dating prostitutes,” said Letterman. “And he was very generous with one girl: He paid her with a new highway project in her home state.” Perhaps Vitter, like many other embarrassed politicians, had set
himself up for ridicule. But hasn’t Letterman set himself up for payback, now? Vitter chose not to return fire at Letterman’s glass house. So did former U.S. Sen. Gary Hart, whose run for the presidency was derailed by a sex scandal in 1987 and who became the butt of many of Letterman’s jokes. “Big weekend for Gary Hart,” Letterman grinned when the Hart scandal broke: “He was campaigning his brains out.” Chris Smith, Hart’s spokeswoman at the University of Colorado Denver School of Public Affairs, said Hart had no comment. In July 2008, Letterman turned his sights on former presidential candidate John Edwards, who confessed to an extramarital affair. No. 1 on Letterman’s “Top Ten Signs Barack Obama Is Overconfident”: “Been cruising for chicks with John Edwards.” That was just a joke. But now Letterman has admitted to reallife sexual misconduct — and put forth his apologies. “Nobody is above making tragic mistakes,” said Foley. “Some never get discovered; some do, in a very public way.”
HOLLYWOOD — He’s out of prison, back in the NFL, and now Michael Vick is going to star in his own television series. The quarterback, who took his first regular-season pro snap just two weeks ago after serving 18 months in prison, is partnering with BET for a new eight-part docu-series scheduled to air early next year. The program, tentatively titled The Michael Vick Project, spotlights his controversial comeback with the Philadelphia Eagles while also examining his tumultuous past — including his troubled childhood and his 2007 arrest for running a dogfighting ring. “I just want people to really get to know me as an individual,” Vick said last week in an interview from his home in Philadelphia. “What I want to do is change the perception of me.” The onetime NFL star’s decision to expose his private life to a television audience follows a flurry of recent news and sports media interviews, which began with 60 Minutes in mid-August. The Vick series is a gamble for a quarterback who is eager to rehabilitate his tarnished image but also doesn’t want to incur the further wrath of animal rights protesters, many of whom argued against his reinstatement to the NFL. That may be difficult. Officials with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals expressed skepticism about the project. “People who abuse animals don’t deserve to be rewarded,” said PETA spokesman Dan Shannon. “They shouldn’t be given multimilliondollar contracts ... or given the privilege of being a role model. We don’t believe Michael Vick understands the seriousness of his crime. I think he’s sorry he got caught, but only time will tell if he’s truly remorseful.” The project is being produced by DuBose Entertainment; Vick’s production company, MV7 Productions; and Category 5 Entertainment. No one associated with the production would comment on Vick’s compensation for the series. In August, a federal judge approved Vick’s six-year plan to repay creditors an estimated $20 million and emerge from bankruptcy. Producers of the Vick series emphasized the program should be considered a docu-series — not a typical reality show like VH-1’s The T.O. Show, which revels in the excesses of its flamboyant star, wide receiver Terrell Owens. The tone of Vick’s show, say producers, will be serious and somber as it focuses on his personal struggles since his release, including the strains on his relationships with his fiancee, Kijafa Frink, and his children. It will also revisit the federal prison in Leavenworth, Kan. where Vick spent 1 1/2 years behind bars and the Virginia property where he ran and financed a dogfighting ring.

New England Journal of Medicine, and you have a smallscreen squad that would rival the staff at the Mayo Clinic. “So often in television you have a certain number of things that enter the wind, and you end up with a lot of shows in a certain area,” said Gail Berman, the former entertainment president for Fox TV, who now serves as an executive producer for Mercy. “This year it’s medical. You just go with the flow.” Not that the onslaught won’t get some executives’ hearts racing. Lloyd Braun, Berman’s creative partner, remembers that he hesitated to sign off on a promising pilot back when he was co-chairman of ABC entertainment, only because the network had already watched a number of other efforts flatline. At the very last minute, he agreed to give the program a chance. The series: Grey’s Anatomy. Of course, Grey’s isn’t exactly in the pink these days, thanks to the departure of T.R. Knight and the behindthe-scenes whining of Katherine Heigl, leading the new competitors to believe they can pick up some of the aging series’ regulars. But the clientele they really covet are the fans of ER, which ended its staggering, highly lucrative 15-year run last season. “It’s the 800-pound gorilla — and it’s gone,” said Dario Scardapane, creator of Trauma. “I think a lot of people want to find out what the 21st-century version of a medical show will be. I know that’s what we’re shooting for.” The formula dates back to an era long before everyone wanted to be examined by George Clooney. Medic, starring Richard Boone, was making the rounds in 1954 and series such as Julia, M*A*S*H and St. Elsewhere have served as milestones in TV history. “With the big three — the legal show, the cop show, the medical show — they all have kind of built-in stakes,” Scardapane said. “It’s life or death, and nobody’s numb to life or death.”
