Art experts find possible new da Vinci drawing Associated Press

Garth Brooks says he’s coming out of retirement NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Country superstar Garth Brooks announced Thursday that he’s coming out of retirement. Brooks, 47, said at a news conference in Nashville that he will end his retirement. The move has been rumored in the music industry for weeks. “We’re going to take the retirement roof off over our head, and I already feel taller,” Brooks said Thursday. Brooks said he has no immediate plans and will see how things go in the

coming years. “As for touring, if I can’t eat it, sleep it, breathe it, then it ain’t me,” Brooks said. Brooks retired in 2000 to spend more time with his three children. He’s occasionally popped up in special appearances at awards shows and charity events, but has mostly stayed out of the limelight. In an interview with The Associated Press last year, Brooks said he would like to return to the road once he raises his children. — Associated Press

There’s no such thing as a da Vinci floating around,”’ Silverman said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. “I started looking in the areas around da Vinci and all the people who could have possibly done it and through elimination I came back to da Vinci.” Last year, Silverman bumped into Nicholas Turner, a former curator of drawings at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the British Museum. Turner said it was a Leonardo and other leading art experts have backed it up as well. Silverman said a palm print in the neck of the portrait’s subject, believed to be the daughter of a 15th-century Milanese duke, adds to the evidence. Carbon dating also suggests the drawing dates from when Leonardo would have been drawing. Silverman said the fingerprint image at the Luminere Technology laboratory confirmed it. “That was icing on the cake,” he said. Silverman describes the Swiss private collector as a very rich man who has promised to buy him “lunch and dinner and caviar for the rest of my life if it ever does get sold.”

By ROB GILLIES TORONTO — A new portrait by Leonardo da Vinci may have been discovered thanks to centuries-old fingerprint and palm print. Peter Paul Biro, a Montreal-based forensic art expert, said that a fingerprint on what was presumed to be a 19th-century German drawing of a young woman has convinced art experts that it’s actually a Leonardo. Canadian-born art collector Peter Silverman bought “Profile of the Bella Principessa” at the Ganz gallery in New York on behalf of an anonymous Swiss collector in 2007 for about $19,000. New York art dealer Kate Ganz had owned it for about 11 years after buying it at auction for a similar price. One London art dealer now says it could be worth more than $150 million. If experts are correct, it will be the first major work by Leonardo to be identified in 100 years. Ganz doesn’t believe it is. “Nothing that I have seen or read in the past two years has changed my mind, I do not believe that this drawing is by Leonardo da Vinci,” Ganz told The Associated Press on Wednesday. She declined to comment further. Biro said the print of an index or middle finger was found on the artwork and that it matched a fingerprint from Leonardo’s “St. Jerome” in the Vatican. Biro examined multispectral images of the drawing taken by the Luminere Technology laboratory in Paris. The lab used a special digital scanner to show successive layers of the work. “Leonardo used his hands liberally and frequently as part of his painting technique. His fingerprints are found on many of his works,” Biro said. “I was able to make use of multispectral images to make a little smudge a very readable fingerprint.” Technical, stylistic and material composition evidence had experts believing they had found a Leonardo as early as last year. The discovery of the fingerprint now has them convinced. “I would say it is priceless. There aren’t that many Leonardos in existence,” Biro said. He said he had heard that one London dealer felt it could be worth 100 million British pounds (more than $150 million). Silverman said his Swiss friend saw it first and told him it didn’t look like 19th century artwork. When Silverman took a look at the Ganz gallery in 2007, he thought it might be a Leonardo, although that seemed far-fetched. He hurriedly bought it for his Swiss friend and then started researching it. “Of course you say, ‘Come on, that’s ridicu-

Smithsonian plans to open human evolution hall By BRETT ZONGKER Associated Press

Longtime Clarksdale, Miss., resident Panny Mayfield, sits among her many displayed blues performers photographs in the sitting room of her home. Mayfield’s house is also the former home of Tennessee William’s childhood best friend, Phil Clark.

Festival honors Tennessee Williams By SHELIA BYRD Associated Press

CLARKSDALE, Miss. — Fans of the playwright Tennessee Williams will be shouting for Stella this weekend in Clarksdale, Miss. Williams drew some of his most powerful images from his boyhood hometown in the Mississippi Delta, where an annual festival now celebrates the city’s role in Williams’ award-winning stories. The name Stella in A Streetcar Named Desire belonged to a friend of Williams’ mother in Clarksdale. Brick, the alcoholic athlete played by Paul Newman in the 1958 film, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, was the name of a local boy who bullied Williams while he was student at Oakhurst Elementary. The Tennessee Williams Festival, produced by Coahoma Community College, begins Friday and features a Stella shouting contest, acting competitions, porch plays and panel discussions about Williams and his life in Mississippi. A BBC documentary of last year’s festival will be aired. Producer Carmel Lonergan said it shows links between Williams’ upbringing and surroundings and many of

his dramas. The playwright — born Thomas Lanier Williams — lived as a child in Clarksdale with his maternal grandparents, The Rev. Walter Dakin and his wife, Rose. The locals say Williams would go on parish calls with his grandfather, and often heard church gossip and colorful tales in the early 1900s. “Tennessee was just fascinated by the Clark family and the Cutrers,” Coahoma College spokeswoman Panny Mayfield said, referring to two prominent Clarksdale families. “The Cutrers were very flamboyant people. Their home was a mecca for international people. They had masked balls and elaborate house parties. We’re talking about cotton money.” Mayfield said J.W. Cutrer was a successful lawyer, and his wife’s name was Blanche. The St. George’s Episcopal Church, where Williams’ grandfather once served as priest, still stands, as does Cutrer Mansion, where masked balls inspired imagery in some of the writer’s plays, as well as the fictional home Belle Rive in Streetcar. Stella Connell Salmon, 80, never met Williams, but she knew his grandfather, who often visited Clarksdale after he left

the rectory. Salmon, who has participated in previous panels, said she always wondered why Williams never used her mother’s name, Thankful, in some of his work. “He used so many local names. I always felt he slighted her,” Salmon said. The morality conflicts woven through Williams’ plays are believed to have roots in his years living in the rectory, said Mayfield. Williams, who was openly gay, once said it wasn’t until he moved to New Orleans that he was able to “live freely,” she said. Even after Williams moved away he kept up with the goingson in Clarksdale, Mayfield said. One of the highlights this year will be actor Johnny McPhail’s portrayal of the disenchanted traveling shoe salesman from The Last of My Solid Gold Watches. McPhail, who starred in Ballast, a Sundance Film Festival winner in 2008, said Williams’ stories are true to Southern culture. “It’s like he was writing about me. I know the language. If you read it the way it is written, you can’t help but say it with a Southern dialect,” said McPhail, who lives in Oxford, Miss.

WASHINGTON — The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History plans to open a hall next year dedicated to the story of human evolution over 6 million years, officials announced Wednesday. The nearly $21 million Hall of Human Origins will follow milestones in history — when humans started walking upright and started speaking, for example — as well as the impact of climate change and extinction of ancient species. It’s scheduled to open on March 17, 2010, marking the museum’s 100th anniversary on the National Mall. “The exploration of human origins helps to tell us about how we came about and also helps place our own existence,” said curator Rick Potts, director of the museum’s Human Origins Program. This will be the Smithsonian’s first permanent exhibit focused solely on human evolution. It will include hundreds of fossils, reconstructed faces of early humans and 75 cast reproductions of skulls. Interactives will show the human family tree and current research around the world. The museum also is establishing an advisory group called the Broader Social Impacts Committee to foster discussion on how scientific and religious perspectives on human origins can be compatible. Potts said many people of deep religious faith also want to understand “how the science informs who we are. “We’ve been very careful ... to produce an exhibit that’s welcoming for everyone,” he said, “an honest place to look at the fossil evidence, to explore the fossil evidence and the archaeological evidence that informs about human evolution.” The 15,000 square-foot hall is being funded by David H. Koch, a chemical engineer and executive vice president of energy company Koch Industries Inc. of Wichita, Kan. It will be named in his honor for his $15 million donation. Koch, a billionaire who lives in New York City, was the Libertarian Party’s vice presidential candidate in 1980. He has been a donor to conservative causes as well as educational, medical and cultural groups. His political donations haven’t worried Smithsonian curators because of his emphasis on science and culture, Potts said. “What we find in David Koch is a person who’s committed to doing things for the American public that has no relationship to politics,” Potts said. “He has an ability to separate that out, and so do we.” Koch, an engineer trained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said he was pleased to support the exhibit. It was his first major contribution to the Smithsonian. “The program has the power to influence the way we view our identity as humans, not only today, but for generations to come,” he said in a statement. Another major funder of the project is physicist Peter Buck, co-founder of Subway restaurants, who gave $15 million to fund ongoing research and to begin new education programs. The funds will establish the Peter Buck Chair in Human Origins at the museum.

Taylor Swift on cloud 9 after 6 AMA nods By CAITLIN R. KING Associated Press

Craig Lassig/Associated Press

Adam Young, 23, who records under the name Owl City, performs at the Cabooze bar in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 26. His album ‘Ocean Eyes’ has sold nearly 100,000 copies.

Owl City music turns online popularity into hard sales By PATRICK CONDON Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS — Adam Young had never seen the ocean with his own eyes, but that didn’t stop him from writing and recording an album called Ocean Eyes. The CD cover’s marine and coastal imagery gives no hint that Young — who performs under the moniker Owl City — recorded the whole thing in the basement of his parents’ house in Owatonna, a small Minnesota city about 60 miles south of Minneapolis. “I wrote songs about places I’d never been because I’d never been there,” Young said of his breakout album. “That to me is the most wonderful reason in the world to write about a given thing — the unexperienced, the great unknown.” For Young, who in recent months has leapt from the basement to the music charts, the list of things he never thought he’d experience is shrinking fast. After cultivating a fanbase by posting his ringtone-ready electro-pop songs on MySpace and selling about 115,000 single-song downloads on iTunes, Young landed a deal with Universal Records, which has artists such as Taylor Swift, Lil Wayne and Kanye West. Ocean Eyes has sold nearly 100,000 copies since its July 28 release. Owl City songs are climbing the U.S. Top 40 and alternative music charts, the video for “Fireflies” is in rotation on VH1 and MTV, and recent nightclub and theater shows have sold out in across the U.S. Earnest and a little awkward, the self-effacing

Young makes an unlikely candidate for a pop star. But he’s an example of success in the post-Internet music business because he transformed online popularity into money in the bank. Daydreams and fantasy worlds are a staple of Young’s starry-eyed lyrics. As a kid, the only child of a mechanic and a schoolteacher fantasized about music stardom. But he realized after stints in a couple teenage rock bands that for him, music was a solo act. It wasn’t until a few years later when Young was in community college and working at a soda bottling factory, that he decided to give the solo thing a try. “I was working a job I hated, just kind of a deadend feeling,” Young recalled. He started fooling around with music software, and noticed that musicians were winning fans through social-networking sites. Young put songs on MySpace and up for sale on iTunes, and quickly cultivated a following. He’s also been upfront about his strong Baptist faith, but avoided defining himself as a Christian recording artist. His lyrics never veer anywhere near objectionable territory, making Young a safe bet for parents of teenagers (and perhaps one reason Rolling Stone’s reviewer dubbed the music “serious mush.”) Aurora Simar, a 15-year-old from St. Paul who sat waiting outside a club before Young’s recent Minneapolis show, said she started listening to him about a year ago. It was her second time seeing him on stage. “He dances at his shows, and then he’ll sing into the mike and then he dances some more,” Simar said. “It’s like, he’s so silly. It just makes me like him.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Taylor Swift says she is “absolutely walking on a cloud” over her six nominations for the American Music Awards. “I’ve never been nominated six times for any award show,” the country star said Tuesday before a benefit concert in Nashville. “This is just such a wonderful day for me.” Her tally, announced on Oct. 13, even beat late superstar Michael Jackson, with five nods and rapper Eminem, with four. “It’s the 13th today, and 13 is my lucky number, and that’s when I found out about the AMAs. It’s like, I swear, good things happen on the 13th for me, and I can’t believe all those nominations.” The 19-year-old is up for the AMA’s big award, artist of the year, alongside Jackson, Lady Gaga, Eminem, and rock band Kings of Leon. “It’s wonderful to be nominated in all genre categories,” said Swift. “I consider it such an honor, because I live in Nashville, I sing country music, and the fact that people outside of this genre have accepted me, just makes my days more sunny, and I am so happy about it.” Her other nominations include favorite female pop and country artist, favorite adult contemporary artist and favorite pop and country album for Fearless, which has sold three million copies. “I absolutely love the pop crossover stuff, it’s really fun for me. I love hearing different takes on my music and hearing different genres and different formats listening and adding my songs. It’s just something that I’m very thankful for,” she said. The nominees were selected through a combination of sales and radio airplay. American Music Award winners are determined by online fan voting and will be announced during a ceremony in Los Angeles on Nov. 22, airing on ABC.

Bowling for Soup Sorry for Partyin’ Bowling for Soup makes no apologies for crassness on its latest, Sorry for Partyin’. From the lyrics right down to the album cover, which depicts the foursome frolicking in a giant toilet bowl, it’s apparent that lead singer Jaret Reddick and the boys clearly channel the perspective of the average 14-year-old boy. Much in the spirit of Primus or The Offspring, Bowling for Soup chooses this irreverent path for expression, and the result is catchy, melodic tunes that have tinges of funk, punk and 1980s alt rock. And while lyrically humorous, they sometimes aim low with the subject matter. The first single, “My Wena,” is exactly what you think it’s about. Released ahead of the album, the video stars a woman parading through the song dressed in a penis costume. Television airplay will probably be at a minimum, but that won’t matter since the song has already become a huge viral video hit. As for the album, standout tracks include the torch song “Me With No You,” the 1960s-inspired “I Gotchoo” and the bouncy “I Don’t Wish You Were Dead Anymore.” Then there’s “Belgium Polka,” a modern homage to the dance music that will most likely not be heard at senior citizen centers. “BFFF” covers the platonic angle of having a gay friend with a chorus resplendent of a classic Seinfeld episode. Though some may see this collection as an exercise in bad taste, there’s no getting away from the Texas quartet’s charm. Listening to this CD will not make you smarter, but it certainly may put a smile on your face. And there’s nothing wrong with that. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Half way through “If Only,” it felt like I knew this song forever. It reminded me a bit of The Fray on steroids. — John Carucci, Associated Press

Many alt-classical musicians are taking it mainstream By Anne Midgette The Washington Post

alt-classical albums

WASHINGTON — Just outside Washington, a cellist plays in duo with electric guitar, their music wrapped in an envelope of reverb and static from the computer processors onstage. In Baltimore, a saxophone and bass clarinet perform acoustic compositions by acclaimed 20th-century composers in tandem with new electronic pieces by younger ones, interspersed with a live contribution from a DJ. And in Washington, a composer who wants to form a new-music group turns, not to conservatories, but to Craigslist. Classical music is thought of as a world of formal wear, red velvet seats and Mozart concertos. But young classical musicians here and elsewhere are increasingly exploring additional ways to express themselves. Once upon a time, young conservatory musicians wanted to grow up to play as soloists with major orchestras. Today, many of them are forming bands instead. The ensembles of the new alt-classical world are poised somewhere between traditional classical music and contemporary culture. It’s hard to define exactly what kind of music they play. “It always seems to be so many adjectives,” says Gina Biver, a Washington composer and founder of the Fuse Ensemble. “You just say contemporary art music or modern art music; that’s close. We have scores written out. All our musicians are classically trained. We have cellos and contrabass, but I also play electric guitar.” What’s certain is that, following in the footsteps of groups like the Kronos Quartet and the Bang on a Can All-Stars, these ensembles perform any and all music, from Steve Reich to Radiohead, Javanese gamelan to the Renaissance composer Josquin, in instrumentations that might include anything from violin to (in the case of Washington’s Great Noise Ensemble) amplified Coke cans. And unlike traditional classical groups, you can’t even tell what they are by their names. Instead of the Juilliard Quartet or the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, we have Alarm Will Sound, eighth blackbird, itsnotyouitsme. This isn’t some lunatic fringe of experimentalism. The spirit of these groups is permeating, and invigorating, the whole classical music world. Armando Bayolo, who founded the Great Noise Ensemble through the abovementioned Craigslist announcement, knows his model: “I really feel groups like Alarm Will Sound and eighth blackbird represent the future of classical music.” There are two main aspects of the alt-classical idea. On the one hand, it represents an attempt to break down the traditional concert format, which can seem stiff and off-putting to the younger crowd whom all musicians these days would like to attract. The New York performance space Le Poisson Rouge, a clubstyle venue that features contemporary and classical music acts, is drawing attention nationwide. But the second main point about alt-classical groups is that they are increasingly featured on mainstream, traditional concert series and orchestra programs. The Library of Congress series, committed to

An eclectic selection of some recent CDs representing different facets of the “alt-classical” sound: n Alarm Will Sound: a/rhythmia (Nonesuch). For their first major-label recording, this powerhouse chamber ensemble has created a kind of dance album with arrangements of music that has as its common thread a strong rhythmic profile. Highly recommended. n Christopher O’Riley: Out of My Hands (Mesa Bluemoon). Though the release date was moved back to January, a teaser track was made available on iTunes this week: a cover of “Hide and Seek” by singersongwriter Imogen Heap. Sergei Prokofiev’s grandson is a prominent figure on London’s alt-classical scene, and the founder of this label dedicated to alternative music. new music since its inception, has presented Alarm Will Sound and the Absolute Ensemble, both “bigger groups that are at home in so many worlds,” says Ann McLean, one of the library’s three senior producers for concerts and special projects. Young musicians today, she says, “go back and forth with more ease than you would have heard five years ago.” This season, the library is offering a particular concentration of edgier groups, such as Brooklyn Rider and the Jack Quartet, both string quartets with a bandlike mentality and a funky, contemporary vibe. The Corcoran, already a new-music home, will bring in the NOW Ensemble, a New York group that includes two composers among its seven members, on Monday. On Saturday the Barns at Wolf Trap is presenting the pianist Christopher O’Riley (of NPR’s From the Top), who will play arrangements of Nirvana, Tori Amos, and his particular signature, Radiohead. As different as they are, these new groups do see themselves as part of a larger sea change in the field. Said Nick Kendall, a 31-year-old violinist with the bluegrass-jazz-uncategorizable, classically trained string trio Time for Three: “I think there is 100 percent similarity, in that we all come from the same breed, we all trained in the same way but we all are experimenting and coming up with our own individual voice. I think it is so exciting.”

‘Paranormal’ achieves abnormal success By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — The critics have spoken. Here’s what more than a few have to say: “Scariest movie of the decade.” “Scariest movie of my life.” “Scariest movie of our time!” For Hollywood studio flicks, such raves usually are no more than icing on top of a marketing campaign that cost tens of millions. For Paranormal Activity, the raves are the marketing campaign. The comments above, repeated over and over again in various contexts on Twitter and Facebook — along with other online fan buzz — propelled the microbudgeted horror movie to a $7.9 million weekend in just 160 theaters. That’s a colossal average of $49,379 a theater, compared with $11,429 in 3,000 theaters for Couples Retreat, which debuted as the weekend’s No. 1 movie with $34.3 million. Couples Retreat has stars — Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Kristen Bell, Kristin Davis — plus the traditional mammoth studio sales push — one that included TV spots, billboards and a chic junket for Hollywood reporters on Bora Bora. Paranormal Activity mainly has just its fans — a legion growing by the minute as more and more people post their thoughts. Distributor Paramount Pictures so far has spent only a couple of million dollars promoting the movie, a fraction of the marketing budget for big releases. Most of that money has gone into its Web site and to set up screenings to build the buzz. “This movie doesn’t lend itself to a big, giant marketing campaign. This movie is an old-fashioned wordof-mouth movie,” said Rob Moore, Paramount vice chairman. “By and large, at today’s production budgets, it’s really hard to say, `All right, now we’re going to

rely on the audience and their word of mouth to make it work.’ Not when you have tens of millions of dollars in production costs invested in the movie.” The studio has only a pittance invested in Paranormal Activity. Shot by writer-director Oren Peli for a reported $15,000, the movie was acquired by former Paramount partner DreamWorks at 2008’s Slamdance Film Festival. The original idea was to reshoot the movie, putting more money and gloss into the documentary-style fictional tale of a couple tormented by strange phenomenon and apparitions. But Paramount decided Peli’s raw little fright film could stand on its own. The studio trimmed the movie a bit and punched up the ending, then tried to figure out the best way to hook fans. In keeping with the movie’s do-it-yourself indie spirit, Paramount started with midnight-only screenings in 13 cities, then let the online community decide where the movie would play next. Over the second weekend of midnight shows, Paranormal Activity expanded to 20 more markets where it got the most requests from a Web site the studio had set up. Fans continued to vote, deciding the movie’s next destinations as it went into all-day release in 46 markets this past weekend; the studio plans to continue rolling the movie out to more theaters based on what towns request it the most. The fan base has grown exponentially as more people saw the movie, then jumped online to write about it. Paranormal Activity has lingered on and off for days among Twitter’s most-popular “trending topics,” where it remained on Tuesday. “On the social-networking sites, everybody’s talking about how freaking scary this movie is,” said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. “This does not happen every day. This is literally capturing lightning in a bottle.”

LOS ANGELES — The no-budget ghost story Paranormal Activity arrives 10 years after The Blair Witch Project, and the two horror movies share more than a clever construct and shaky, handheld camerawork. Like its predecessor, Paranormal Activity has been making waves through a viral marketing campaign that has been building positive buzz through early, sold-out college town screenings and Internet chatter. This week it expands to 46 markets where it will play throughout the day and evening in more than 170 theaters. And, like Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity is bound to divide audiences who have absorbed the hype. Best advice: See it early in its run — and late at night in a packed theater. Half the fun of the movie comes from the communal experience of sharing in something that feels like it hasn’t been market-tested within an inch of its life. Paranormal Activity opens with a title card, thanking the families of Micah Sloat and Katie Featherstone as well as the San Diego Police Department, an immediate signal that the “found footage” we’re about to see won’t have a happy outcome. Micah (Micah Sloat) has bought a video camera to document the “weird (stuff)” that has been happening in the two-story San Diego home he shares with his girlfriend of three years, Katie (Katie Featherstone). It turns out that freaky things have been happening to Katie since her family’s house burned down when she was eight. Since then, Katie has suffered through nightmares and felt the presence of a “shadowy figure” at the foot of her bed. Micah’s solution is to set up his new camera on a tripod at the foot of the couple’s bed and document what happens while they sleep. The thinness of the premise is laid bare toward the end, but not enough to erase the horror of those silent, nighttime images seen through Micah’s bedroom camera. Paranormal Activity owns a raw, primal potency, proving again that, to the mind, suggestion has as much power as a sledgehammer to the skull.

Law Abiding Citizen is guilty of stupidity in the first degree. Part horror film, part thriller, it fantasizes about what a man with a little money and a 10-year passion to get justice for his slaughtered family can accomplish. He manages to get away with so much because he’s dealing with a pack of idiots and a script that is so contrived it will make your teeth ache. Gerard Butler plays Clyde Shelton, a man of mystery who watches as a random home invasion leaves his wife and young daughter dead. Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) is the hotshot Philadelphia attorney who prosecutes the case. The conviction is probably a slam dunk but Rice wants to keep his conviction rate high, so he cuts a deal with one of the killers. That makes Shelton mad. Fast forward 10 years and Shelton launches a killing spree against anyone connected to the case. Even when he is imprisoned in what looks like a low-rent wing of the Bastille, his murderous plans continue.

Kurt Wimmer’s script is a ludicrous series of events that must happen in exactly the right order or the plotline falls apart. He tries to mask the story’s tedium with occasional ramblings about the criminal justice system. It’s like hearing the safety officer on the Titanic stress the need for good dental hygiene as he slips into the icy water. Listing all the plot flaws would take more room than all the Smiths in the phone book. Just one example: Shelton is supposed to be some super brain who works for the government thinking of creative methods to kill people. Yet he’s not smart enough to just fashion a simple way to snuff the two men who murdered his family. Instead he comes up with a 10-year plot that makes healthcare reform seem simple. Director F. Gary Gray’s pacing is so slow it feels like 10 years have passed. His shot selection looks like a cut-and-paste section from Movie Making for Dummies. Foxx is passable as the crusading attorney, but Butler as a psychotic killer is about as believable as a rabid Winnie the Pooh. Butler should stick to light romantic comedies or heavy special-effects action movies and leave the crazed killers to actors like Anthony Hopkins. The inevitable conclusion: There should be a cease-and-desist order against Law Abiding Citizen.

A radiant Michelle Pfeiffer is Lea, a courtesan well schooled in pleasure and the politics of the personal, who is approaching that point where she will age out of her profession (any parallels to Hollywood are no doubt intentional). With Kathy Bates, playing Lea’s friend and colleague Madame Peloux, Pfeiffer wends her way through screenwriter Christopher Hampton’s insouciant banter with decadent assurance and an eye on the clock, which may be why Lea adopts as her project, and her lover, Cheri (Rupert Friend), Madame Peloux’s son and a candidate for early debauchery. What begins as a lark turns into love. And what began as a frothy period piece becomes a meditation on age and passion. Contains sexual content and drug use.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

There’s so much swirling, relentless action, indistinct robot characterizations and over-caffeinated techies loose on the special-effects machines that the film, in mere seconds, achieves

incoherence. Since the absence of the “Allspark” life force has made the Autobots’ planet uninhabitable, they’ve moved in with us like unemployed relatives and have been working with the U.S. military to find rogue Decepticons and to keep the world safe. But not for long: The ancient origins of the Autobots and evil Decepticons will come to the fore. Shia LaBeouf (Sam) and Megan Fox (Mikaela) are back, of course, but director Michael Bay, executive producer Steven Spielberg and the rest of their co-conspirators have relegated humans to the props department. Contains sexual content, vulgarity, intense action, crude humor and drug content. Community orchestra to perform concert This is the way to enjoy a concert: Do a little research on what you’ll hear; listen with sensitivity for the rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color and recurring themes; and look forward to an emotional workout. Then, plan to attend a concert like the Jacksonville State University/Community Orchestra’s next concert Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Anniston. The program, directed by Chris Hosmer, has all of the elements of good music. The well-written pieces are fun to listen to, whether you’ve done your homework or not. From the perspective of one of the orchestra’s players, each piece enables the listener’s mind to go to a different place and level. Concerts strike a good chord with several local listeners here, for different reasons. Some like the peace of mind the music affords; othHervey ers say the music gives them a Folsom Artists in Action chance to put thoughts in order. Still others go for the sake of hearing the combination of instruments. This particular program pushes the boundaries of the imagination. It is a concert of definite contrasts. One mood yields to another as this 20-piece orchestra performs string music. “We’re visiting several styles and periods of music,” Hosmer said. “We’re doing Baroque, classical, light classical, contemporary and romantic.” Now and in centuries past — when people wanted to hear new compositions — a live performance brings a certain excitement and expectation. The Brandenburg Suite No. 3 by Johann Sebastian Bach represents sadness and success on the part of the composer. Bach presented the Margrave (military governor) of Brandenburg, Germany, a set of six concerts, but was never thanked nor paid.

From left, Susan DiBiase, cellist; Chris Hosmer, conductor of orchestra; and cellist Nina Bidikov before a rehearsal for the JSU/Community Orchestra. Musicians in the Margrave’s Berlin orchestra were not suitable for the task. But the orchestra in the provincial town of Koethen, where Bach worked, probably introduced the music to the public. Now, the Brandenburg Concertos are famous for the influence they had on chamber music. Concerto No. 3, on the program for Oct. 25, is elaborate, full of detail and grand, as if the queen is about to appear. Bach is making a point, repeatedly. His final, dramatic ending, gives him the last word, every time. “Berceuse,” by Gabriel Faure, shows the composer’s gentle touch for soothing night music and features a cello solo by Susan DiBiase, accompanied by the strings’ pizzicato, or the plucking of the strings. Leroy Anderson’s catchy “Plink, Plank, Plunk” is a song with a smile. And Mozart’s Quartet in C (which becomes a quintet in this occasion) can be counted

on for its melodic form and balanced style. It is rumored that Bach liked to play his viola in orchestras and placed his chair strategically “to be in the middle of the harmony.” In the middle of this program’s line-up is a piece of harmony that really requires concentration. “Five” was written in 2007 by Philip Schuessler, who did undergraduate work at Birmingham Southern College. “The music is different from the kind people are used to hearing,” Hosmer said. Conducted by JSU visiting professor Gregory Robin, it is designed for a choice of any five instruments, but the cello, bass, tuba, flute and flexatone are played here by JSU’s New Music Ensemble. In the 1700s, music was the main diversion for people, according to music appreciation texts. Music was written for aristocrats and royalty, but churches were the places where the general populace could hear compositions. Hopefully, this diverse concert will draw a large crowd from all corners of the area, and history will repeat itself once again. The concert is free and open to the public.

Comedian: End world hunger? Sell the Vatican Associated Press

ROME — Comedian Sarah Silverman has a new proposal for ending world hunger: Sell the Vatican. In a new profanity-laced monologue making the rounds on YouTube in time for U.N. World Food Day, which is today, Silverman suggests that it’s time for the pope to “move out of your house that is a city” and use the proceeds to feed the world’s poor. “On an ego level alone you will be the biggest hero in the history of ever!” she exclaimed. “Sell the Vatican. Feed the world.” The Vatican clearly has no plans to follow suit. On Thursday, a spokesman declined to comment. But the Catholic League, the U.S. Catholic civil rights organization, denounced Silverman and cable broadcaster HBO for her “obscene” and “filthy diatribe.” In a statement, it noted that such an attack would never have been leveled against, say, the chief rabbi of Jerusalem or the state of Israel and added that the “Catholic Church operates more hospitals and feeds more of the poor than any private institution in the world.” Yet the Rev. James Martin, culture editor of the Jesuit magazine America, says Silverman may be onto something. In an online article, Martin noted that Jesus himself told his followers to sell what they had and give it to the poor. “Of course Pope Benedict XVI could not ‘sell’ any of the treasures of the Vatican, the same way that your local archbishop couldn’t sell off the cathedral at a whim; they are not his, they are the church’s,” Martin wrote. “And the church is not simply the hierarchy but the entire

Princess Aurora, the world’s most famous slumbering royalty, is taking her next nap at the historic Ritz Theater in Talladega. In two performances on Oct. 17-18, the Montgomery Ballet will present Tchaikovsky’s “The Sleeping Beauty.” Elie Lazar, artistic director for the dance company, describes the performance as one the entire family can enjoy. “Families don’t have to worry about the type of presentation they will get,” she said. “This is a well-known story that will entertain the entire family.” But Aurora won’t steal all of the spotlight. According to Lazar, there is a scene where Puss in Boots appears on stage, as does Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf.

“There will definitely be other princes and princesses,” she said. “This is a wonderful opportunity to experience professional ballet in a beautiful theater,” said Tom Wofford, executive director of the Ritz. “So few area children have this kind of opportunity. This will be an excellent cultural (experience), close to home and affordable.” The Montgomery Ballet is the oldest dance company in the state and features 20 professional dancers who are local to Alabama. The ballet will perform two shows, one at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 and another at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 18. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children. people of God.” But he added: “Still, perhaps Ms. Silverman, in her postmodern, potty-mouthed way is on to something. Like Jesus was. Sell the Vatican? Well, maybe not everything but perhaps a statue or two?” For the record, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, which just released its annual report on the state of world hunger, says global food output will have to increase by 70 percent to feed a projected population of 9.1 billion in 2050. To achieve that, poor countries will need $44 billion in annual agricultural aid, compared with the current $7.9 billion, the Rome-based FAO silverman said. Overall, an annual net investment in agriculture of $83 billion is needed to feed the world. Even if the pope were to sell the Vatican, it wouldn’t be enough. In 2004, the Vatican disclosed that the Holy See’s real estate was worth 700 million euros, or about $908 million at the time. That doesn’t include St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, which the Vatican termed priceless and valued at a symbolic 1 euro. The Vatican began publishing its finances in 1981, when Pope John Paul II ordered financial disclosure to debunk the idea that the Vatican was rich. Silverman, who is no stranger to religiously and racially charged slurs, gained international attention with her 2008 “The Great Schlep” campaign in which she exhorted Jews to go to Florida to convince their grandparents to vote for Barack Obama.

A scene from “Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.”

‘Uncharted 2’ delivers high-octane PS3 adventure Associated Press

Harrison Ford is getting old. Bruce Willis looks tired. Arnold Schwarzenegger has a state to run. And Hollywood doesn’t make action heroes like it used to. Shia LaBeouf? Please. At least the video-game industry is trying to pick up the slack. And in Nathan Drake, the wisecracking, globe-trotting treasure hunter at the center of “Uncharted 2: Among Thieves,” Sony has created a hero to rival Indiana Jones. Indeed, the plot of “Uncharted 2” (Sony, for the PlayStation 3, $59.99) sounds like a lost chapter from the Indiana Jones series. Drake is asked to track down an artifact connected to the explorer Marco Polo, which may lead to the discovery of the lost paradise Shambhala (aka Shangri-La). A murderous Russian warlord is in hot pursuit of the same secrets; you also have to contend with a seductive thief, a two-faced pretty boy and a relentless reporter. The journey bounces from the jungles of Borneo to the mountains of Tibet, barely catching its breath between ports of call. All the environments are jaw-droppingly vivid, but the snow-covered Himalayan vistas are especially gorgeous. “Uncharted 2” is one of the best-looking games on the PS3, but all its graphical splendor would be worthless without solid gameplay. Fortunately, the veteran designers at Sony’s Naughty Dog studio have blended in an impressive variety of challenges. One level may be an all-out firefight; the next, a massive, 3-D architec-

tural maze. Some scenarios, like a race in which you have to keep jumping from jeep to jeep, are as rousing as anything in Raiders of the Lost Ark. None of these elements is particularly original, and other games have done them better. The shootouts have a “Gears of War” feel, while the vertigo-inducing climbing sequences are reminiscent of “Prince of Persia.” What makes “Uncharted 2” distinctive is the way one type of gameplay flows so seamlessly into the next, depending on the demands of the plot. The story borrows freely from the Hollywood adventure template, but it’s smartly paced and has some surprising revelations. The dialogue is quite well-written, mixing hammy end-of-the-world melodrama with self-aware irony. And the characters — particularly Drake and the two women who share his affections — are brought to life with first-rate animation and voice acting. “Uncharted 2” is very linear: In any given level, there’s usually only one way to get from point A to point B. But most of the areas warrant a return visit, whether you’re looking for artifacts you may have missed the first time or challenging your friends to a round of death match. The multiplayer options, both competitive and cooperative, are substantial, but it’s the solo campaign in “Uncharted 2” that really shines. It’s the kind of highoctane action romp Hollywood used to make before the likes of Transformers took over the multiplex. Four stars out of four.

The evolution of sports games Sports games sure have come a long way since the Tecmo Bowl days. Overpowered Bo Jackson has nothing on online play. Head-to-head competitive sports gaming has been around for awhile now, but has made significant strides over the past year. Star sports guru and longtime buddy Kevin Jeffers and I always dreamed of playing an online franchise on Madden. We waited patiently Chris for what Pittman Pushing Buttons seemed to be an obvious addition to the game. Years passed and it looked like EA had no intention of throwing us a bone. Everything changed with the announcement that “Madden 10” would have such a feature. Our prayers were finally answered. Better late than never right? Well, not exactly. You see, the online version of “Madden’s” multi-year season mode has been stripped of the most integral features, the biggest of which is the lack of player contracts. This makes for a rather pedestrian offseason. I was also very disappointed that I couldn’t alter my kickoff coverage in the depth chart. I love watching Darren McFadden hustle down the field to make the tackle on special teams. Sigh. All negatives aside, “Madden 10’s” online franchise delivers in the fun department. We’ve already played numerous seasons in several franchises, and the end is nowhere in sight. A very good first effort that will certainly be improved in “Madden 11.” And 12. And 13. Another cool feature of online franchise is the fantasy draft. Make sure to have about

five free hours before you attempt one. I’m only slightly exaggerating. Cooperative modes in sports games have also witnessed a boost recently. One of my favorite online additions of the past few years is the “be a player” mode featured in almost all of EA’s sports games. You create a character and then play out the career locked onto that particular player. My buddy Jered and I have been addicted to “NHL 10’s” version of “be a player.” It’s pretty much the best thing to happen to hockey games in years. We created a team once our characters had been finelytuned and took on our first opponent. After all, Team Funkblast is willing to accept challenges from all comers. Turns out we needed a bit of practice. We’ve been getting better, but the competition is fierce in the EA hockey league. The best part is that you can choose to play a different position each time. I created my player as a winger, but that hasn’t stopped me from giving goalie a whirl. Defending a power play sure feels like playing a military shooter. Watching a puck go into the net hurts more than a virtual bullet ever would. The A.I. team members seem to have glue on their sticks. They hardly take a shot and it always puts us in a pretty bad position. The game generates random names for them each game, but it’s easy to remember the goalie that couldn’t save a shot. I’m looking at you, Ramjagsingh. “FIFA 10” looks to be our next game to tackle. It has all the features of the other games and then some. You can even upload a picture to the web that can be placed on your character. It doesn’t get more customizable than that, folks. Indeed, it’s a good time to be a sports game fan.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE +++ RATING: PG for mild thematic elements, some adventure action and brief language

RUNNING TIME: 1:41 STARRING: Max Records, Catherine Keener, voices of James Gandolfini, Forest Whitaker, Catherine O’Hara and Paul Dano

BY CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Where the Wild Things Are, the book, is just 339 words long. But in turning it into Where the Wild Things Are, the movie, director Spike Jonze has expanded the basic story with a breathtaking visual scheme and stirring emotional impact. It’s a gorgeous film: This may sound contradictory, but it’s intricate and rough-hewn at the same time, dreamlike and earthy. What keeps it from reaching complete excellence is the thinness of the script, which Jonze co-wrote with Dave Eggers. The beloved and award-winning children’s book, which Maurice Sendak wrote and illustrated 45 years ago, still holds up beautifully today because it shows keen insight into the conflicted nature of kids — the delight and the frustration that can often co-exist simultaneously. Jonze gets that, too. With its warm lighting and detailed production design, Where the Wild Things Are remains lovingly faithful to the look and spirit of the book but functions assuredly as its own entity. But Jonze obviously understands the feelings of fear and insecurity — and the inability to articulate them — that the wild things of Wild Things represent, and he’s taken the bold step of showing the creatures not through animation but rather by using actual people in giant, furry costumes. The monsters were voiced by an all-star cast and enhanced through digital effects to make the facial features seem more lifelike. And because talented character actors like James Gandolfini, Forest Whitaker, Catherine O’Hara and Paul Dano had the benefit of voicing their roles on the same stage at the same time — rather than recording their parts independently of each other, which is standard practice — their interplay feels more organic. At their center is Max, played by 12-year-old Max Records, a lonely, misunderstood kid who runs off one day to the magical land where the wild things are and becomes their king. Records is no self-conscious, precocious child actor: He makes Max feel real and relatable, full of joy and rage like any little boy. Because so much is right about the look and feel of Where the Wild Things Are, you wish there were more to the screenplay. Despite many individual moments of great energy, the overall narrative momentum is seriously lacking, and you walk out of the film realizing that not a whole lot happens. There’s the wild rumpus, of course — lots of running and jumping through the forest, leaping and wrestling and collapsing in a giddy, exhausted heap. Mainly, though, the wild things (who have names like Carol, Judith, Douglas and Ira) bicker among themselves about whether to make Max their king, and the best way to build a fort. Many amusing lines do emerge, though — and perhaps a potentially frightening moment or two for little kids. Where the Wild Things Are is certainly as suitable for children as the book that inspired it, but it’ll probably roar even more loudly to adults in the audience who aren’t ashamed to get a little nostalgic about their own childhoods.

FROM THE PAGE TO THE SCREEN BY MARK CARO Chicago Tribune

CHICAGO — The promotional materials for Spike Jonze’s long-gestating new film adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are kick off with this quote from the director: “I didn’t set out to make a children’s movie; I set out to make a movie about childhood.” Warner Bros. has reason to emphasize this distinction: Although Jonze’s Wild Things reveres the spirit of Sendak’s 1963 picture book, it’s quite a different beast. Max, the trouble-making kid at the center of the action, is older. So, presumably, will be the film’s audience. Dave Eggers, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jonze, said the movie’s influences certainly went beyond the standard kiddie fare. “The movies that we talked about at the very beginning — Wizard of Oz and Black Stallion and My Life as a Dog and 400 Blows — were about childhood and did it from a child’s-eye view as opposed to more like, I call them confections,” Eggers said over lunch recently with the director and actors Max Records (who plays Max) and Catherine Keener (who plays his mom) in a downtown hotel. “It wasn’t like we were making this anti-kids movie,” said Jonze, whose bright green crew-neck sweater was as pristine as Eggers’ San Francisco Giants’ baseball cap was dirty. “We were working from the inside out in terms of what we wanted it to feel like, as opposed to the outside in terms of what shelf it was going to go on in the video store.” But Jonze’s approach launched him onto a journey at least as long and perilous as Max’s. Although a seven-minute, animated Wild Things was made in 1973 (and updated in the 1980s), Sendak later spent years trying to launch a featurelength film and eventually approached Jonze, whom he’d befriended on a project before the director made his 1999 breakthrough film Being John Malkovich. At that point, the movie was set up at Universal, though disagreements would prompt its move to Warner Bros. (Pixar founder John Lasseter had even worked on a computer-animated version for Disney before he made Toy Story.) Eggers, the author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and Zeitoun and founder of the independent publishing house McSweeney’s, had been friends with Jonze since writing him a fan letter about Malkovich, and Jonze didn’t care that Eggers had never written or even read a screenplay when he asked him to collaborate about five years ago. “I think Spike has a fondness for untrained or self-trained

people,” said Eggers. He noted that Jonze also hired Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as a first-time composer. “Yeah, and Max had never acted in a film before,” Jonze said of his now-12-year-old star, who previously had appeared in a Death Cab for Cutie video. “To me, it’s not so important finding somebody that has had the experience. It’s more finding somebody who has the right taste and qualities, because I feel like you can’t teach somebody taste, and I want to be with somebody whose taste is going to teach me something.” By the time Eggers signed on, Jonze had fleshed out a back story that had Max living with his divorced mom and older sister, who was losing interest in him. “I started thinking about who the Wild Things were and the idea that they were wild emotions,” said Jonze, who wanted to make a movie “that felt like being 9 in the world, trying to navigate this new place you’re in.” That the movie Max was older than the one on the page was something Jonze said he never considered “until I started telling Maurice about what I was writing. I was like, ‘OK, Max is like 8,’ and he said, ‘Oh, wait. Max is 5.’ As I was thinking about what the story was, it just felt like 8 or 9 was the right age.”

“If you’re going to really put a kid on a boat in an ocean, 5 isn’t going to cut it,” Eggers said. “It’s just too young.” The iconic, 81-year-old author-illustrator Sendak, who retains a producer’s credit, was OK with that change but took more convincing on another one: Instead of having Max’s room turn into the forest where he encounters the Wild Things, the movie sends Max in his wolf costume storming out the front door and onto his adventure. “That was the one thing that he really couldn’t believe we wanted to do, and he really fought it,” Eggers said. “He kept coming back to it.” “(He’d say) ‘This is your movie — you’ve got to make it however you feel it needs to be — but why can’t the bedroom turn into a forest?”’ Jonze recalled as Eggers laughed. At any rate, the director and co-writer said Sendak proved to be supportive of their artistic freedom and a more astute critic than the studio reps. “Sometimes me and Dave would try to put something in there that was maybe a little bit pandering or cringy or a little on the nose, and it was always the thing that the studio loved and Maurice hated,” Jonze said. “And, of course, we had to go with Maurice.” Perhaps Jonze’s riskiest decision was to make the movie live-action in a multipart process: The actors who played the Wild Things (including James Gandolfini and Catherine O’Hara) performed their voice work on a soundstage before the production moved to Australia, and Records acted alongside local actors in oversize puppet costumes whose mouths eventually were computer-animated. Such a strategy was bound to be tricky, though Jonze said he had no idea the film would take so long to complete and release. Filming began back in 2006, and in early 2008, some test footage of Records cavorting with oversize, non-mouth-moving puppets leaked out over the Internet amid rumors that the production was in trouble. Warner Bros. announced it was delaying the release so Jonze could keep working. Jonze said he took director/ friend David Fincher’s advice and didn’t respond to the gossip, though he admitted that he and the studio were in conflict. “It wasn’t fun, but we made it through it,” he said, noting that the delay turned out to be a blessing because now the studio is giving the film a wide, wellpromoted release. “In the end, I guess the only thing that matters is that I got to make my movie,” he said. “I feel like we made this thing that is true to what we set out to do.”

★ Monty Python’s bright (and silly) side of life marks 40 years

A toast to Jim and Pam, and other TV couples

Associated Press

By Julie Hinds

NEW YORK — Those who don’t know Monty Python, and don’t care, have been blessed with six hours they can spend on something other than watching IFC’s new documentary series. Of course, all Python disciples can look forward to comedy catnip in Monty Python: Almost the Truth (the Lawyer’s Cut), shown from Sunday through Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. History. Hysterics. Silly walks. All bundled into an everythingyou-wanted-to-know-or-rediscover chronicle of this legendary British comedy troupe, now marking 40 years. It’s not the first Monty Python documentary, but it’s certainly the latest, longest and last (at least for now). And its distinctive style is clear from its first moments. After the very silly, Pythonesque title sequence, each of the five surviving Pythons is heard from in fresh on-camera interviews (plus archived interviews with its sixth member, the late Graham Chapman), musing on their respective beginnings. No soaring introductory pronouncements of what Python accomplished and represents. That will be spelled out, step by step, in the fullness of six hours, as interviews, film and audio clips decipher how Monty Python became the most groundbreaking, transforming wellspring of comedy in the history of the world (OK, maybe a wee exaggeration). Chapman, along with fellow Brits John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin and Terry Jones, plus Minnesota-born interloper Terry Gilliam, were children during World War II. They were shaped by radio comedy as much as television. They bridled at, and feasted on, the uptight, tradition-bound 1950s culture of their youth. They harnessed the gloriously unhinged, subversive 1960s and used it as their launching pad. On TV (notably Monty Python’s Flying Circus, produced for British TV), in live performances, recordings and feature films (including the incomparable Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Life of Brian), the Pythons’

(IFC is including those two films, as well as Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl and all four seasons of Flying Circus in its on-air Pythona-Thon.) Though the group has been effectively disbanded for years as each Python struck out to pursue his own projects, it lives on undiminished. As recently as 2005, Monty Python’s Spamalot, a lavish musical based on the 1974 Holy Grail film, became a Broadway hit. Meanwhile, classic Pythonesque drollery enjoys eternal life. The mere thought of “the Knights who say ’Ni”’ or “Eric the half-abee” or the gay lumberjack song will reduce any Python fan to helpless silly-state, never mind the passage of decades. Why? MPATTTLC is marvelous at how it accounts for Monty Python in suitably comprehensive fashion. For any viewer with nothing better to do (and what could be better?), it’s six hours gloriously spent. Putting it together was a labor of love as well as persistence and filial pride for Bill Jones, the son of Python Terry Jones. He produced the miniseries with his partner and childhood chum, Ben Timlett.

First order of business: enlisting the five errant Pythons. “It took a while to convince them,” Bill Jones said in an interview from his and Timlett’s London office. “Getting them all to agree on something is very difficult.” He said the recruiting process began more than two years ago, “and by the time they came on board, it was just nine months before delivery.” “At first, nobody wanted to do another Python documentary, me included,” Terry Jones said pleasantly during a separate phone call. “Mike Palin got worried when they were going to pay: Nobody else had ever paid us to be interviewed for our own documentaries before. Somehow that made him suspicious.” Among the Pythons, Terry Jones can be conveniently singled out as the explosive Mr. Creosote in Monty Python’s Meaning of Life and as the co-director, with Terry Gilliam, of Holy Grail (imagine how smoothly THAT went!). “The whole idea of Python was to be totally unpredictable,” Terry Jones said when asked to summarize the troupe’s de facto mission statement. “We were trying to be undefinable.” Indefinable? Too bad. “Pythonesque” is now defined in the Oxford English Dictionary.

The course of true love never did run smooth — at least, not on television. When you have a great romance like Ross and Rachel on Friends or Carrie and Mr. Big on Sex and the City, you can count on turmoil and misunderstandings for seasons galore. If a prime-time couple is happy, the thinking goes, who’ll want to watch? Me, for one. After a week of too much information about David Letterman’s past relationships with staffers and Jon and Kate Gosselin’s endless image wars, I was ready for the kind of hi-def marital bliss that arrived Thursday night with Pam and Jim’s wedding on The Office. Defying the truism that matrimony ruins a TV couple’s charm, the NBC sitcom let Pam and Jim get hitched. The one-hour episode provided the sort of warm and squirmily uncomfortable moments that fans have come to expect from The Office. In honor of Pam and Jim’s nuptials, here are some of my favorite TV husbands and wives. May they live happily ever after in syndication. n Marge and Homer Simpson (The Simpsons). When the blue-haired Marge said “I do” to the bumbling Homer, she knew she was in for a lifetime of him yelling “D’oh!” But she’s stood by him because his heart — if not his instincts, id or intellect — is in the right place. n Lucy and Ricky Ricardo (I Love Lucy). The housewife yearning for show-biz stardom provoked one slapstick crisis per episode for her bandleader spouse. But it was always a given that he’d find life impossibly dull without her — and that she’d be just as bored without him to amaze and outwit. n Monica and Chandler Bing (Friends). The sweetest part of these longtime pals getting hitched? After years of seeing each other at their most obsessive (her compulsive orderliness, his insecurities), they fell in love because of their weird quirks, not despite them. n Trista and Ryan Sutter (The Bachelorette). Yes, dating shows are an awful way to find lasting companionship. But these two gorgeous specimens actually seemed in it for the right reasons and have forged a rarity — a successful reality-TV marriage. n Heathcliff and Clair Huxtable (The Cosby Show). America’s favorite nuclear family of the 1980s was led by this long-wed duo whose playful bantering gave hope to middle-aged marrieds everywhere that more anniversaries could mean even more fun. n Darrin and Samantha Stephens (Bewitched). Dick Sargent, the second Darrin, was too disapproving. Dick York, the original Darrin, captured the flustered husband’s underlying appreciation for his wife’s magic powers — the only kind that TV wives could wield prefeminism.

Stephen Colbert’s naming fetish excites his fans Los Angeles Times

Consider, if you will, the humble diving beetle. It’s not a particularly glamorous creature, with its six legs and hard exoskeleton. A living being further removed from the distractions of show business could not be found, or so you might think until you run across the name of one recently discovered species: Agaporomorphus colberti. Yes, Stephen Colbert, the endlessly mocking and jibing host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, has a water

beetle named after him. And that’s just the start of it. Colbert — French pronunciation, please, with a silent “t” — has had his name slapped across all manner of random objects that have no obvious connection to him or his popular nightly show. though the agency later backtracked and named a treadmill on the International Space Station after him instead. Last year, Colbert petitioned successfully to have his portrait hung in Washington’s National Portrait Gallery (near the bathrooms, but still). At the corporate level, Ben & Jerry saluted Colbert with a new ice cream flavor. Virgin America, not wishing to be left stranded at the gate, named an A320 jet “Air Colbert.” What does a celebrity have to do to get stuff named after himself these days? Just ask, it seems. “I guess there is one episode (of his show) where he was talking about wanting things named after him,” said Quentin Wheeler, a professor at Arizona State University and director of the International Institute of Species Exploration, who with a coauthor named the beetle after Colbert. “And why not? He has a popular following, obviously.” Actually, professor, to call it a “popular following” might be underselling the point. When Colbert speaks, his fans respond. And not in the typical watch-this, buythat fashion. His followers go so much further. Members of the “Colbert Nation” are actually called to action, as if canvassing for a political campaign. They write letters. They vote. They do whatever their smarmy hero tells them to do, no matter how firmly his tongue is planted inside his cheek. These days, even contestants on third-tier reality shows can cultivate rabid fan bases. More than 2 million people follow the Twitter posts of party girl Kim Kardashian, for example, who recently shared thoughts about weighty topics such as dental floss and her new Sam Edelman boots. But few stars can or actually do cajole their devotees to do things repeatedly in their name, even absurd, random things. In Colbert’s case, especially absurd, random things.
