Channel TV characters with clothes and accessories By LISA A. FLAM Associated Press
Brooks Brothers/Associated Press
Brooks Brothers released their exclusive ‘Mad Men’ edition suit, which they collaborated on with costume designer Janie Bryant. licensed by HBO — that was modeled on the show’s four feisty women. Of the latest as-seen-on-TV looks, the most high profile is likely the Brooks Brothers “Mad Men Edition” suit, inspired by AMC’s Emmy-winning 1960s Madison Avenue drama. The retailer is selling 250 of the gray sharkskin suits through the season finale on Nov. 8. Selling for $998, it has ’60s detailing, including a two-button jacket with narrow lapels, diagonal pockets and side vents. The trimmer suit has been around for several seasons (Brooks Brothers brought it back in 2006). But Mad Men is giving the silhouette a boost by showing today’s man how it comes alive, said Lou Amendola, Brooks Brothers’ chief merchandising officer, calling the TV visual “a major selling tool.” “They relate to it. They see it and it really gives men a sense of credibility,” he said. Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant, who created the suit, calls it a modern version of what she designs for the Don Draper character. “When a suit is fitted and tailored to your body, it looks very sharp and elegant, and that’s the look of the suit,” Bryant said. Wolfe said the suit is a smart move, especially as the shaky economy lingers. “There’s a groundswell desire to look more professional in the workplace,” he said. “Nobody looks more serious about business than the guys on Mad Men.” Women who aspire to look like those drama-loving divas from the Real Housewives can buy activewear and accessories based on the Bravo shows.
“We felt that consumers and fans of the show would be really interested in owning a piece of the glamorous life of being a Real Housewife,” said Jen

NEW YORK — So, you admire the fashions of popular TV characters. Do you want to dress just like them? This fall, you can if you favor the slim suits worn by one smartly dressed 1960s ad man, the sexy looks of those real-life housewives or necklaces dripping with “blood” — make that rubies — inspired by modern vampires. The latest collaborations from the intersection of television and retail are licensed clothing and jewelry lines tied to the hit shows Mad Men, the Real Housewives franchise and the vampire drama True Blood. “It is a loud and clear signal that the American consumer is looking for fashion excitement that isn’t being delivered by traditional stores or designers,” said David Wolfe, creative director at The Doneger Group, a fashion-forecasting company. The agreements make sense, experts say, because people are watching more television, the shows are better today than in decades past, and because fashion is no longer limited to insiders. “The whole world knows about fashion and follows fashion,” said John Mincarelli, a fashion merchandising professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. “It’s the right time for the small screen.” People have always looked to all corners of the entertainment world for style cues, but TV is having a greater influence on fashion now because the shows themselves are more fashionconscious, Wolfe said. “In the 1950s and early ’60s, people who chose clothes for most TV shows were afraid of being too fashionable because they thought the average American wouldn’t get it,” he said. “In the ’70s and ’80s, the young and the fashionable started to get it, but it was still too much for the mainstream taste level. I think the average American now gets it.” Viewers have emulated the style of TV characters for many years — from Mary Richards’ beret to Carrie Bradshaw’s stilettos. A savvy business ploy sometimes follows with sanctioned, licensed fashions: There was the Davy Crockett coonskin cap in the 1950s, the side-button doctor shirt tied to Ben Casey in the 1960s and the glitz and glamour of the 1980s captured in The Dynasty Collection by Nolan Miller. TV’s sway over fashion can be seen today at Target, where a line this season by designer Anna Sui was inspired by Gossip Girl. Last year, Sex and The City devotees could buy lingerie from Cosabella —
Turner, vice president for licensing and strategic partnerships for Bravo. The line, co-branded with Royal Plush, also offers loungewear, denim and handbags. It’s set to go on sale at stores including Bloomingdales and Fred Segal. Though some have questioned the Housewives’ taste, Mincarelli, who feels most of the country makes questionable apparel choices, says anything that gets people to think more about what they’re wearing is good. “It’s not just throwing on Russell Athletic,” he said. “Since a lot of people wear activewear, the Housewives activewear will be their fashion statement.” Meanwhile, vampire fans can emulate their favorite characters from HBO’s True Blood with ruby-dripping jewelry. Licensed by HBO and created by Udi Behr, the line went on sale in September. Behr says people need to escape to other worlds because of the “dark time” we live in. “People want to look and dress like the characters, and in fashion today, the vampire motif is very strong. Blood is in,” Behr said.

Winners, losers emerge for new TV season By DAVID BAUDER Associated Press
NEW YORK — If it were a television series, it would be called Defying the Odds. Five weeks into a new TV season, three of the four top broadcast networks have bigger prime-time audiences than they had in 2008. With cable networks flexing their muscles, digital video recorders becoming more popular and computer games cutting into free time, that’s a small miracle. No new shows burst onto
the air as instant hits. But there weren’t any embarrassing flameouts, either. CBS is television’s most popular network and, if anything, has strengthened its position. Fox is used to struggling until American Idol returns, but the buzzworthy Glee gives executives hope for a new musical franchise. While struggling NBC has seen few promising signs, its freefall appears over. ABC is the only network down from last year, due primarily to audiences slipping away from established

favorites like Desperate Housewives, Dancing With the Stars and Brothers & Sisters. Unlike past years, “it doesn’t feel like the business is totally collapsing,” said Preston Beckman, Fox’s scheduling chief. The veteran executive said it looked like networks had the best crop of newcomers that it’s had in years. CBS has established Tuesday as the most popular night of television, much like NBC did with its comedies and the drama ER in the 1990s. NCIS is TV’s top-ranked show this fall, by a healthy margin. Its viewership is up 22 percent over last fall, according to the Nielsen Co., and it was growing then, too. The spinoff NCIS: Los Angeles and Julianna Margulies’ new drama, The Good Wife, have both succeeded in the time slots following the blockbuster. “They’ve never been able to put stuff behind (NCIS) that holds the audience,” said Steve Sternberg, a television analyst formerly with Magna Global. “Now they have.” Moving the Monday night comedy The Big Bang Theory from an earlier time slot to 8:30 p.m. has also paid off for CBS. The show is up 48 percent in viewers from a year ago, Nielsen said. The medical drama Three Rivers isn’t expected to last too long on CBS. With ER off the air, efforts to establish a new medical drama have largely failed. NBC’s nurse-centric Mercy has a slight edge over its action-oriented Trauma. Maybe folks just prefer the established doctors: Ratings are up for House on Fox. Fox executives are happy with the performance of Glee and the new animated The Cleveland Show. The latter has fit smoothly into the network’s Sunday animated schedule and already has an order for two seasons. With some strong returning series, Fox moved into first place this week in the 18-to-49-year-old demographic it most cares about.

Marc Broussard determined to go his own way By Mario Tarradell The Dallas Morning News
Charles Sykes/Associated Press
Hannah Blilie, Beth Ditto and Brace Paine of the band Gossip recently released a new album, ‘Music For Men.’
Gossip says snazzy record deal doesn’t faze them By MARK KENNEDY Associated Press
NEW YORK — Members of the band Gossip know precisely when they hit the big time. It wasn’t when Sony agreed to put out their new album. Nor was it when Grammy-winner Rick Rubin showed up to produce it. And it wasn’t when they traded in their former dingy recording studios for a sleek one by the beach in California. When was it exactly, then? “When we got asked to do The Simpson’s theme song,” says Brace Paine, the guitarist, bassist and music creator for the Portland, Ore.-based trio. He isn’t kidding: Gossip, known for its fusion of rock, punk and disco, jumped at the chance to contribute to a new version of the song that kicks off Bart and Co.’s 20th anniversary episode next year. “That’s the moment when you go, ‘This is the big time, baby,”’ says Beth Ditto, the band’s irrepressible lead singer and lyricist. “That, or Weird Al doing one of our songs,” replies Paine. It’s certainly been a weird trip for Gossip, a onetime garage band who this month release their first full-length studio CD since making waves in 2006 with the pro-gay marriage single “Standing in the Way of Control.” Interviewed in a plush office at Sony Music’s headquarters in Manhattan, the band is riotously funny, finishing each others’ thoughts and often bursting into silly song. Paine wears a leather jacket, a sloppy mustache and oversized glasses, his hair in a shaggy pompadour. Drummer Hannah Blilie, 28, whose solitary face graces the album cover, sports a partially
shaved head, mouth piercing and tattoos up her arms. Ditto wears outrageous amounts of eye makeup and her short hair bright orange. They insist their punk tastes won’t change at Sony. “We’ve been a band for 10 years,” says Paine. “We know what we want and who we are. I think that’s why being on a major label doesn’t really faze us so much.” The new 11-song CD, Music For Men, was overseen by an icon in the industry who has produced the Beastie Boys, Metallica and Johnny Cash, and recorded at the luxurious Shangri La studio in Malibu, Calif. “I felt weird a couple of times, but if you think about it, it’ll drive you crazy,” says Paine. “I tried to just let it be as natural as possible. If I sat down and thought about how much money was put into record, that could be depressing.” The album is arguably Gossip’s most mainstream, a carefully crafted, professionally produced group of catchy, high-tempo songs that showcase Ditto’s blistering vocals and Paine’s knack for short bursts of infectious riffs. As always, their lyrics attack sexism, size-ism, homophobia and social injustice. Reviews have been mostly positive, with The New York Times declaring the band “reveals new levels of craftsmanship and detail” and The Associated Press saying “Those open to the band’s new direction will be rewarded.” Rolling Stone said “punk purists may hate it. But dance-floor revelers will drown them out.” Rubin, reached by e-mail, said he had wanted to help the band explore who they are as artists in the studio, letting their true selves comes through: “They are in their infancy and have the talent and taste to be a very important band,” he said.
Trials and tribulations provide ideal fodder for great R&B songs. But what if your personal life is in good shape? What if there’s no pain for the gain? Louisiana soul man Marc Broussard recently pondered such a predicament. “I was thinking lately, my wife and I have been doing so well as a husband and wife, that I was thinking I needed a little bit of heartbreak in my life,” says the 27-year-old singer-songwriter by phone from a tour stop in Chicago. “Maybe those heartbreak songs come from this business. It is a heartbreaking business. We’re all struggling for attention and input.” Broussard knows a little bit about the fight to be heard. Since 2002, he has been paddling upstream through the rushing waters of the recording industry. His talent — a genuine knack for merging R&B, funk, blues and vintage pop into a muse-affirming sound that belies his young age — has yet to reach the mainstream masses. His latest CD, 2008’s Keep Coming Back, is another worthy example of his cool, stirring melange, which brings to mind genre legends Al Green and Bobby Womack. But Keep Coming Back is also his fourth disc in as many record labels. After his inauspicious debut, 2002’s Momentary Setback, released on tiny Ripley Records, his major label bow, 2004’s Carencro, was released on Island. The acclaimed disc started some buzz, but Island rejected his follow-up effort, calling it “too urban.” Broussard begged off the label and then entertained a contract with the resuscitated Stax Records that fell through. He recorded 2007’s S.O.S.: Save Our Soul, a collection of R&B cover songs, on his own dime and licensed it to Vanguard. Atlantic Records came to his rescue, releasing Keep Coming Back and supporting his upcoming fifth album, which he will record in December. Broussard doesn’t intend to change a lick of his sound for commercial acceptance. He does want to be successful. He wants to make more money to travel and support his wife and three children. Still, this Louisiana artist, son of Cajun music guitarist Ted Broussard, will always feed on the artistry of his upbringing. “When you take styles and things that you like to listen to and mash them all up, that’s called your own style. It’s definitely influenced by my upbringing in Louisiana, because that influences my life,” he says. “My father is a very talented musician, and he played a big role in what I was listening to growing up, but all in all it has been my own search for stuff that I really like listening to and making music that I like listening to myself.”

It’s her gorgeous, understated vibrato, however, that really makes the Swell Season worthy of attention. Taking lead vocals on only two songs, she squeezes each note with whispered emotion, from lamenting love lost on the bossa nova flavored “Fantasy Man” to “I Have Loved You Wrong.” Backed by a deep, throbbing bass line, Irglova sings as if drowning in the moment, “Forgive me, lover, for I have sinned/ For I have done you wrong.” In interviews, Hansard and Irglova have mentioned their continued partnership as friends and musicians. Like the best ex-lovers who continue to collaborate, they will hopefully mine life’s heady peaks and heavy depths on future albums. — Solvej Schou, Associated Press
Joe Nichols’ new CD is lively, feisty Joe Nichols Old Things New
No one in Nashville has a “countrier” voice than Joe Nichols. And it isn’t just the twang that makes it so. Equal parts grit, glamour and gloom, the 32-yearold singer’s pipes reveal experience hard won, raw emotion and, not least, soul. Honesty in a voice is a hard thing to quantify, but on many of these songs, Nichols finds shards of truth so sharp they’ll leave you catching your breath. After the fluffy but charming opener, “Gimme That Girl,” Nichols gets dark in a hurry. “It’s Me I’m Worried About” is rooted in the best of country’s rich subgenre of self-pity songs. The title track follows, another wonderful slow boozer about trying to recapture scraps of the past that have slipped away. “Man, Woman” is set to a feistier beat, but the sadness is set in stone. The album is not flawless. Rhyming “midtown diner” with “South Carolina” should’ve set off country cheeseball alarms. And there’s a late-middle
stretch of the album that simply moves too slowly. “Cheaper Than a Shrink,” a testament to booze as medication, is the album’s liveliest — and funniest — song. (“About 18 bucks will get you four six-packs / No pouring out your heart to some highdollar quack.”) But it’s also a setup to the album’s sucker-punch finale, “An Old Friend of Mine.” The cleverly crafted closer is an alcoholic’s farewell to drinking, and Nichols, who has admitted to struggles with addiction, sings accompanied only by piano. Not since George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today” has a country singer sounded so haunted. — Joe Heim, The Washington Post
Devendra Banhart brings variety of genres without sounding awkward Devendra Banhart What Will We Be
When Devendra Banhart released Oh Me Oh My ... in 2002 on Young God Records, critics immediately crowned him the prince of the burgeoning New Weird America scene. It didn’t quite fit the Texan-cum-Venezuelan who’s also spent time in Los Angeles: Banhart’s not a ruler; he’s the people’s troubadour. On his latest recording, What Will We Be, the 28-year-old Banhart steps back from his early, raw intensity with a creased collection of drifting tunes freshly produced by A Band of Bees’ Paul Butler. He filches from a variety of genres — Brazilian Tropicalia, glam rock, lounge jazz, Zeppelinlike psychedelia — but it never sounds awkward. He loosens the stitches on each to fashion his own unique
costume. “Take me as I am or might become,” Banhart sings in a slurry whisper on “Goin’ Back,” one of the most laid-back songs he’s ever recorded, with its finger-picked chords and beachsandy drums. Playing with the same ensemble that backed him on 2007’s “Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon,” Banhart’s first outing on a major label is not a concession to the big guns, but rather an attuned jog through their artistic obstacle course. — Margaret Wappler, Los Angeles Times
Carly Simon mixes things up Carly Simon Never Been Gone
Artists who re-record touchstone songs from their catalogs, as Carly Simon does on her latest fulllength collection, take on the burden of coming up with something different enough to make that material newly relevant. Perhaps not surprisingly, her tour through her nearly four-decade catalog succeeds best when she mixes things up the most. The opening reading of “The Right Thing to Do” is pleasant but seems eerily close to what the song might have sounded like in the hands of her ex, James Taylor — the presence here of their musician son, Ben, could have something to do with that. Things pick up, however, with the vintage R&B groove of “It Happens Every Day,” then deepen with a sophisticated treatment of “Boys in the Trees.” “You’re So Vain” turns wistful
rather than spiteful, while “You Belong to Me” is given a sultry Latin jazz arrangement, possibly an outgrowth of her Braziliantinged 2008 album “This Kind of Love.” “That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be” is more melancholy than when she released it in 1971 thanks to simple finger-picked guitar backing sweetened with strings and flutes. What Simon does here is flip through the musical photo album and talk honestly about what place those old memories hold in her life now. — Randy Lewis, Los Angeles Times
Music
Boy loses girl, boy meets new girl, boy and girl make lovely, love and painfilled music. That’s essentially the gist of Once, the Grammy and Oscar-winning 2007 movie that snagged audiences with its soundtrack featuring the film’s stars, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. Irish singer-songwriter Hansard, frontman of the Frames, and Czech singer-pianist Irglova not only fell in love in real life, but formed a band, the Swell Season. Then the couple broke up. But that didn’t end their musical relationship. The group’s new album, Strict Joy, while not as immediately ear-grabbing as the Once soundtrack, troves that sensitive, post break-up territory with beautiful, mostly subtle tunes in hushed acoustic tones. Recording started in August 2008, just after the split. Produced by Peter Katis (Interpol), the album showcases Hansard’s impassioned voice and lyrics on numbers such as the soulful single “Low Rising,” layered with harmonies from Irglova.

Fans: Jackson delivers on ‘This Is It’ By SANDY COHEN Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson’s This Is It premiered to high praise from fans who applauded at each number as though they were at a concert and marveled as the singer stepped nimbly through his moonwalk and other signature moves. Jackson, 50 when he died last June, kept pace with backup dancers half his age during rehearsals for such hits as “Thriller,” “Billie Jean,” “Beat It” and “Human Nature.” The film was shot as Jackson prepared for a marathon concert stand in London that never happened. “He looked better than he did when he was 30,” said Jessica Childs, a 21-year-old aspiring dancer who caught the Los Angeles premiere. “His voice stood out.” Four of Jackson’s brothers — Jermaine, Marlon, Tito and Jackie — attended, saying afterward that seeing their brother on film filled them with love and pride. “It’s amazing to see him up there doing his thing,” Jackie Jackson said. “To see him up there doing his performance like that has brought a lot of tears to my eyes, sitting there watching him. Because I love him so much. That’s why I keep this with me at all times in my pocket. It’s a little token of him,” he said, pulling out a white-glove key-ring fashioned after one of his brother’s best-known accessories. “It was closure for me,” said Marlon Jackson. “And it was a moment where I just felt his spirit inside of me. And that made me feel good.” The mood at simultaneous premieres around the world Tuesday and Wednesday was tearful yet celebratory. At the Los Angeles premiere near the arena where much of the rehearsal footage was shot, This Is It director and longtime Jackson collaborator Kenny Ortega introduced the film to the audience, calling it the “last sacred documentation of our leader and our
friend.” “It was touching. Well done. It was beautiful,” said Casey Gosh, 24, who was invited to the premiere by a friend. “It told his story. You really felt like you knew him. It was his final performance.” “I loved seeing him in action again,” said David Montalvo, who saw This Is It in New York City. “It’s like you were able to see Michael again for the last time, so it was a good chance to say goodbye to him.” The footage revealed just how elaborate and demanding Jackson’s comeback run of 50 planned concerts last July would have been. One segment showed how Jackson would have made a grand stage entrance inside a mechanical spider. Another, intended as a 3-D film accompaniment on “Thriller,” featured an expansive graveyard set. “We thought it was excellent. The concert we never saw,” said Marilyn Morrison, who also saw the film in New York. “Just seeing all the moves, his original moves, just seeing him doing them again. Just wonderful.” Early reaction from critics was equally positive. Matt Soergel of The Florida Times of Jacksonville calls it an “exuberant, astonishingly entertaining concert film.” “Looks like the world has missed one helluva concert,” writes Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter. And Nekesa Mumbi Moody of The Associated Press said, “The amazing performances Jackson delivers in this film are not a result of camera magic, but Jackson’s own.” The film already was getting repeat business. Gina Meconi and a friend attended the Los Angeles premiere then went to one of the first public screenings right after. “I had tickets for this anyway, so I said let’s go see it again,” Meconi said. “It was awesome. I loved it. I thought it was going to be sadder, but it wasn’t sad at all.”
Watching Michael Jackson’s This Is It will have fans grieving once again, but this time, it won’t only be for the fallen King of Pop, but for what we lost — a brilliant entertainer who gave every inch of his body and soul for what might have been one of the most spectacular comebacks of all time. Jackson never got to complete that comeback, dying days before his London concerts were to begin in July, but This Is It, culled from hundreds of hours of rehearsal footage for those shows, does it for him. Even though it’s been well edited, the amazing performances Jackson delivers in this film are not a result of camera magic, but Jackson’s own. When Jackson announced his This Is It concerts earlier this year, many wondered whether Jackson had any magic left at all. Besides his tattered reputation, he was rumored to be in frail health and hadn’t performed a major concert in almost a decade. There were well-deserved skepticism about whether Jackson had the vocal and physical agility to stage the kind of concerts that wowed fans in his prime two decades earlier. This is It gives both answers an emphatic yes. Even though Jackson’s looks — with his weirdly delicate face and his stick-thin frame — still makes one squirm with discomfort, once he starts to perform, that discomfort gives way to amazement. At 50, Jackson was still an amazingly gifted dancer with moves that leave your mouth agape. Though we only see him do the moonwalk once, and just fleetingly, his stop-on-a-dime spins, deft footwork and body jerks recall the Jackson the world fell in love with 25 years earlier with “Thriller.” And Jackson’s voice still dazzles — even when he’s trying to play it down. “I’m trying to conserve my voice,” Jackson says at one point — then delivers a vocal that is spine-tingling — and these are just run-throughs, not the actual show. This Is It is a beautifully made, loving tribute that gives Michael Jackson what he so desperately wanted — affirmation that he indeed was the greatest entertainer of our time.

Charles Kuralt: DVD set a must-see detour into Americana Los Angeles Times HOLLYWOOD — Back in the 20th century, a CBS TV reporter named Charles Kuralt set off in an RV with no particular place to go to see what was happening there. On the Road With Charles Kuralt was the name for the short pieces he filed, which ran in several venues over the years, beginning in 1967 with The Evening News With Walter Cronkite and ending a couple of decades later as part of CBS Sunday Morning, for which Kuralt himself was host for 15 years. A three-DVD set collecting some of Kuralt’s televised anthologies of favorite pieces is being released Tuesday by Acorn Media, with “Set One,” attached to the title. More would only be a good thing, and not too much of one. From Huckleberry Finn to The Wizard of Oz to Jack Kerouac’s On the Road and Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider, stories about going from here to there and having adventures along the way are a cornerstone of our
national mythology. If the hippie bikers of Easy Rider, which hit the screen two years after Kuralt hit the highway, “went looking for America and couldn’t find it anywhere,” Kuralt sees it everywhere he looks. And because he is interested only in what makes a person, place or thing interesting or valuable, there are no politics in his pieces, other than the extremely local politics of doing well by one’s kith and kin and talents. You would not know that when many of these stories were filmed there was a war on, or that half the country feared the other half, and vice versa. On the Road is endlessly watchable, not as history but as some timeless expression of ongoing life. One hopes they are still out there, these people — or people like them, because many, including Kuralt, who died in 1997, must be long gone. Indeed, the world he reported on was endangered even then and has become no less so as the country grows more conglomerated, super-highwayed and franchised.

This absorbing look behind the curtain of the cynical and often sickening workings of the modern industrial food system does a superb job of making its case that our current food ways are drastically out of whack. Starting with the chicken and beef industries, the filmmakers trace how fast-food culture created the corporate concentration of agricultural production and the disappearance of the traditional family farm. With damning hidden-camera footage and interviews with such pioneering journalists as Eric Schlosser and Michael Pollan, the film deftly demonstrates how issues such as illegal immigration, public health and intellectual property law intersect at the largely hidden nexus of Big Meat. Contains thematic material and disturbing images.
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
Stephen Sommers’ film, based on the line of Hasbro action figures, is loud, flashy, silly and too long. As far as plot goes, the crack commando G.I. Joes encounter an evil weapons dealer, a mad scientist, nanobots with a taste for 19thcentury Parisian landmarks, a funny black guy, a couple of unconvincing romances, and a girl who’s been brainwashed into becoming a lethal killing machine. Mixed in with such hard bodies as Channing Tatum and Sienna Miller are terrific actors such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Christopher Eccleston. Contains strong sequences of action violence. — The Washington Post

A thrilling end
‘Paranormal Activity’ actors revel in film’s sudden success By Yvonne Villarreal Los Angeles Times
HOLLYWOOD — Just a few weeks ago, Katie Featherston was balancing plates brimming with spaghetti and baked ravioli, working as a waitress at a local Buca di Beppo restaurant. Micah Sloat was a struggling actor/ computer programmer living in North Hollywood. Now, they’re watching the micro-budget horror movie they filmed three years ago develop into a full-blown phenomenon. The two play the young couple haunted by a spectral force in the breakout hit Paranormal Activity. The suspenseful supernatural thriller, reminiscent of The Blair Witch Project, has become one of the year’s biggest success stories. Made for $15,000, Paranormal was the No. 1 movie at the box office this weekend, taking in about $22 million, and has earned an astounding $62.5 million since its initial limited release in late September. Featherston and Sloat? They’re just as surprised as everyone else. “When the movie opened, we hid behind a tree across the street from the ArcLight (theater) in Hollywood,” Featherston, 27, said as she sat in a booth at Buca di Beppo, where she was frequently interrupted by former coworkers. “The line was huge. I couldn’t believe it. It’s something you hope for but never, ever expect will happen. I wanted to run over and say, ‘Hey, I’m in that!’ ... but we couldn’t.” In an attempt to keep the mystery surrounding the movie’s story intact, the studio and the film’s director, Oren Peli, an Israeli-born video game designer with no formal film training, kept the two actors relatively secluded — they’ve only recently started to do
Lawrence K. Ho/Los Angeles Times
Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat play the young couple haunted by a spectral force in the breakout hit ‘Paranormal Activity.’ interviews with media. It’s all been a big leap for Sloat. The 28-year-old, who grew up in Westport, Conn., and moved to Los Angeles in 2005 to pursue acting, was on the verge of ditching the unstable career and giving up on his dream. Featherston, a Texas native, graduated from Southern Methodist University and also moved to Los Angeles in 2005. When the two auditioned for the spookfest in 2006, they weren’t expecting to be part of a box-office record breaker. There wasn’t even a script. “I remember being in the waiting room and these girls would just kind of walk out shaking their head,” Featherston said. “I walked into the room and (Peli) said, ‘Why do you think your house is haunted?’ Just like that. Boom!
So I just threw myself into the character.” And that’s exactly what Peli was searching for in casting the characters who would later be called Katie and Micah (yes, he used their actual names). “The whole point is for it to feel natural,” Peli said in a recent phone interview. “I didn’t want actors who looked like they were acting. I wanted it to feel real, so I didn’t want there to be a script. I wanted the audience to think they were watching real life. If you’re looking at the footage of their audition and see the way they interact — if you didn’t know any better — you’d think you were looking at real documentary footage of a couple.” It’s true. In person, they often finish each other’s sentences. They playfully
tease one another. Compliments are exchanged. But despite the goodnatured flirtations, they insist they’re not a couple, although Sloat is quick to point out that Featherston asked him for his number back when they auditioned together. “I was not trying to hit on him,” Featherston interjects. “I was new in town and we had so much fun together. Why wouldn’t I want us to be friends and hang out? And I thought if we got the part, it would be nice if we got along because it was going to be intense.” Filming took place in 2006 at Peli’s San Diego home over a span of seven days — a problem for Sloat, who was enrolled in music school at the time (he even wrote original music that’s included in the film). The actors, who were each paid $500 for their roles, often put in 14- to 18-hour days. The little sleep they managed to squeeze in took place in the “haunted” house. “We hardly saw the outside world,” Featherston joked. “We just filmed all the time. I couldn’t even tell you what San Diego is like. But the exhaustion helped make our characters more believable — I think.” Believable acting aside, Sloat said, it’s the universal primal fear that makes this thriller so spine-tingling. “Being scared at night is something we can all relate to,” Sloat said. “As children, we all had those fears. Everyone knows what it’s like to be scared of what’s lurking behind the closet. I think as we age, those kind of unconscious fears recede into the background, but they’re still there. And when they reappear in your home — in your room — it’s not something that you can just ignore. I think that’s why it’s done so well.”

Tunes from the crypt By Greg Kot Chicago Tribune
It’s Halloween and time for some scary songs — and, no, I don’t mean Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s “Monster Mash.” I mean really scary songs. Here are 14, arranged chronologically, that’ll give you the chills: n Skip James, “Devil Got My Woman” (1930s): The demon runs wild, and betrayal runs rampant. n Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, “I Put a Spell on You” (1956): The ultimate stalker nightmare. n The Doors, “The End” (1967): Alternative title — Jim Morrison’s got Oedipal issues and he’s got them bad. n Creedence Clearwater Revival, “Bad Moon Rising” (1969): Deceptively jaunty ditty about the Apocalypse. n The Buoys, “Timothy” (1971): A song written by Rupert Holmes, and possibly the only top-40 hit about cannibalism. n Bloodrock, “D.O.A.” (1971): Another unlikely hit, this time about a grisly road crash, a severed limb and a life expiring before our ears. n Lou Reed, “The Kids” (1973): The most wrenching moment on a wrenching album (Berlin) about a doomed relationship. n Mike Oldfield, “Tubular Bells” (1973): Not a single word is spoken, and all hell breaks loose in the theme from “The Exorcist.” n Randy Newman, “In Germany Before the War” (1977): A brooding meditation on a child killer. n Joy Division, “Dead Souls” (1979): A haunted cry from the edge of the grave made even more poignant by the suicide of singer Ian Curtis less than a year later. n Husker Du, “Diane” (1983): The Minneapolis trio pays tribute to a fan who was raped and murdered by a serial killer. Drummer Grant Hart’s screams say it all. n Geto Boys, “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” (1991): Every minute is life-or-death in this nightmarish series of vignettes. n PJ Harvey, “Down by the Water” (1995): Harvey quotes Leadbelly in this tale of infanticide. n Johnny Cash, “Mercy Seat” (2000): The country legend turns Nick Cave’s song about a condemned man’s final minutes into a riveting psychodrama.

By Erica Long There will be nothing but treats this weekend as Freddie Hart makes his way to the stage at the Ritz Theatre in Talladega this Halloween. Raised in Phenix City, Hart is no stranger to the South. He speaks fondly of his home state, saying “(Southerners’) arms and hearts are wide open and the people from Talladega are just … real.” Awarded with Song of the Year for “Easy Loving” in 1971 and 1972, Best Male Vocalist, Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the year in 1971, Hart received the most awards to ever have been given in one show. Meverly Hurst, Hart’s niece and manager, says Hart travels to Alabama as often as he can visiting family, but this will be his first visit to Talladega. Hart, who says it seems he’s been recording all of his life, will perform his classic hits as well as some of his newer music, including his latest single “I Wouldn’t Trade America for the World.” “It’s a patriotic tribute to his country,” said Hurst, who says Hart gives his country and those who serve it the highest regards. Hart will also perform “Purple Heart,” which Hurst says is a “very moving tribute to those who have served their country or have been wounded in battle.” Hart’s family-friendly concerts take place during Talladega’s Halloween Bash, and concert goers can expect more treats during the weekend as children can trick-or-treat on

Gaming doesn’t have to break the bank
I remember standing in line at Sears to buy “Mortal Kombat Trilogy” for the Nintendo 64 back in ‘96. The console had just released, and games were incredibly hard to find at the time. When I reached the register, I asked for the game and watched the cashier promptly ring it up. Eighty dollars. I couldn’t Chris believe my eyes. Pittman It cost nearly half Pushing Buttons the console price to get a single game. Was it even worth buying for that price? I coughed up the large army of Gen. Washingtons, but vowed to be thriftier in the future. Back then, the original Playstation had just released, so it was still the era of the cartridge. The cartridges required more moolah to produce compared to a disc. Sony’s console would make the CD format mainstream a few years later, and game prices went down as a result. Format wasn’t the only reason games were so expensive. The location didn’t make things easy either. Calhoun County had no Best Buy, Target, Circuit City or GameStop at the time. All of the department stores seemed to drag their feet in getting the newest releases. Pox on that supply-and-demand nonsense. I guess it really does make a difference. Basically, if you wanted a game on day one, it would come at a premium price. At least there was no walking 15 miles uphill in the snow both ways. As I mentioned before, game prices went down once the disc became the industry standard. Fifty bucks for a game was still a bit pricey, but much more manageable than the days of Super NES and Nintendo 64. Unfortunately, this generation went in reverse. The release of the Xbox 360 intro-
duced the $60 game. Sony adopted a similar pricing structure for Playstation 3 software. Nintendo has kept their games at $50 for the time being. Mario wants me to have money. Game developers claim that production costs have reached astronomical numbers, and that the increase in price is warranted. Combine that with the current economic climate and things just get harder for the gamer. Suddenly, priorities overtake the fun budget. Well, I have some good news. Our area now features an abundance of technology and gaming specialty stores. And while it might not make much of a difference locally, the companies all competing on a national scale makes things good for the gamer. Why? Because competition makes the deals come out to play. Wal-Mart’s Web site store and Amazon.com are having a battle over one of the biggest hits of the holiday, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.” The two retailers are including a gift card with each purchase of the game. The amount started at $10, but each company has taken turns pushing the limit up to the current total of $20. Best Buy is running a buy-two-getone-free sale on all Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii games. This was likely a response to the sale Toys R Us held a week ago. Expect to see similar sales at other retail chains over the next couple of months. The biggest shopping day of the year, Black Friday, is less than a month away. This date has always featured gaming deals, but analysts predict even better value will be had this year. We actually live in the cheapest video game era in decades. I don’t stand in line to buy a game at full price anymore. With a little research you can nab a game on release date for much less than the retail price. Watch the Web and store circulars for deals, and take advantage of the best value chances. Gaming doesn’t have to break the bank.

From Vlad the Impaler to ‘Twilight,’ why vampires still suck ... pop-culturally speaking By Brett Buckner Special to the Star
Vampires have always walked among us. Through each generation these blood-thirsty fiends have skulked, feasting upon our fears, lurking in the shadows and haunting the darkest corners of our imagination. And that first bite can lead to an eternal hunger ... for vampire lore. “Dark, brooding and seductive,” says Joules Taylor, author of Vampires, “the image of the vampire haunts the modern consciousness, a temptation to give in to the darkness that dwells within us all.” Today, instead of moonlit alleys and desolate castles, vampires are far more likely to haunt the shadows of bedrooms, where readers cower beneath the covers clutching their horror novels or in darkened movie theaters where lovers cling to one another over popcorn. Since Bram Stoker’s Dracula first unleashed its progeny of fanged blood-suckers in 1897, the appetite for vampires continues. It was with that revered literary classic that Steve Whitton, professor of English at Jacksonville State University, first discovered the rare combination of charm and terror that makes the undead so spellbinding. “The vampire is going to show us a bit of the unknown,” he says. “And in some of the vampire lore, they give us the choice between life and death, which is something we don’t have as human beings. We can make the choice, and if we choose death, we’ll live forever.” As a young man growing up in Columbia, S.C., Whitton started reading Dracula three times, but as Jonathan Harker approached Castle Dracula surrounded by the demonic baying of the “children of the night,” he had to put the novel down as darkness encroached his own bedroom. “I always ended up reading the scary part right at nightfall,” Whitton remembers with nervous laughter. “I finally learned to start reading at lunch time and was fine ... but there are still some moments in that book that are really, really frightening.” From Béla Lugosi to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Anne Rice to The Lost Boys, vampires in pop culture truly are eternal. And with the second of Stephanie Myers’s Twilight saga, New Moon, poised to hit theaters Nov. 20 and the HBO series True Blood becoming the cable network’s highest-rated show since The Sopranos — not to mention the endless parade of Twilight-inspired teen novels to have flooded the market in recent years — vampires have once again created a feeding frenzy. But the looming question is not so much why vampires now ... but rather, why vampires ever? For Diana Laurence, author of How to Catch and Keep a Vampire, who has published several vampire novels
— along with comic books and fortune-telling cards — this broad appeal for the undead comes from the ability to “straddle the line between the fantastical and the human.” Having come of age watching the spooky soap opera Dark Shadows with its main neck-biter Barnabas Collins, Laurence remained fixated with the dark duality that vampires present to writers. Whether sexy or savage, suave or sulking, vampires have become cultural icons to be perpetually rediscovered and reinterpreted by an endless crop of readers and moviegoers. “Obviously vampires have supernatural aspects, but they are also human beings,” Laurence says. “So a writer can explore the fantasy element — mind control, immortality, magic — and also the human issues — guilt, lust, redemption — at the same time. It makes for a lot of possibilities, which is why vampires have played a part in so many of my creative projects.”
A darker Peter Pan Vampires aren’t the lone monsters of myth and fiction — witches, werewolves, Frankenstein’s monster, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Cyclops, Medusa and the Boogeyman, to name but a few, have each given fans their fair share of nightmares. But the allure of vampires seems eternal — as if each new generation resurrects the genre, adding another layer to an increasingly dense myth. Jamie Sellers admits she wasn’t much of a reader, but a few years ago when she was an eighth-grader living in Birmingham, she had to write a book report on any novel she chose. It was the end of the year and Jamie was lost. Having no clue what she wanted to read, she simply wandered around the Barnes and Noble bookstore up at the Summit shopping center. It was there that she literally stumbled across Stephanie Myers’ Twilight saga. “I was just staring up at the ceiling and complaining to myself about how stupid the whole thing was,” Jamie says with an embarrassed laugh. “And I practically tripped over this pile of books. Feeling stupid, I pretended to do it on purpose and just grabbed the first book I saw and started reading. “I didn’t even know it was about vampires.” For reasons even she can’t explain, the story captivated her. Jamie has since read the entire series of books multiple times and has branched out from there to read not only other vampire titles — like L.J. Smith’s The Vampire Diaries, as well as other “creepy stuff” like the satirical Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. “I guess I have kinda strange reading tastes,” says Jamie, who’s just turned 16, “but at least I’m reading. It’s not so much the fact that the books have vampires that makes it fun to read. I like the stories ... but the vampires keep it interesting.”
Simply convincing young people to read is often a challenge. Vampires speak to young people on a unique level. It’s an age-old story that they are largely already familiar with, even without having read Dracula, any of Anne Rice’s books featuring the Vampire Lestat, Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot or more recent titles such as Elizabeth Kostkova’s The Historian. And for young people, there is an additional element that’s an underlying theme in virtually every addition to the vampire catalogue — sex. “(Young people) are often made to feel sex is a forbidden topic, and sexual lust is dangerous and/or wrong,” Laurence says. “However, blood lust is something one can speak about. Vampires stand in as sex objects that don’t technically involve sex. They are a permissible way to explore the issues that burn so fiercely for adolescents — sex as well as feelings of alienation, rebellion and confusion.” It was that suave sophistication that first appealed to Doshia Mundy of Anniston, who discovered vampires by watching the horror classics starring Christopher Lee as Dracula. “That’s back when vampires were sexy and cool and feared,” she says. But Mundy’s interest wasn’t held to the iconic movie version of vampires. Instead, she investigated the rumored inspiration for Stoker’s classic villain — Count Vlad Dracula, Prince of Wallachia, better known as Vlad the Impaler, a sadistic tyrant who enjoyed torturing his enemies by leaving them to die a slow death on tall wooden stakes. Though scholarly opinion varies as to whether or not Stoker borrowed more than Vlad’s name for his classic retelling of the vampire legend, for Mundy, the seed was planted. Back in the age before the Internet, she would spend afternoons and weekends in the library learning about Vlad and the history or Romania. “It was just something that grabbed my attention,” says the 44-year-old mother. “And I remember the first time I saw Vlad’s castle and realized that he was nothing like the vampires on TV. That’s really where it all began for me.” From that point, she discovered the novels of Anne Rice and Stephen King. Though Mundy hasn’t read any of the Twilight novels, having been “oversaturated” by the media blitzkrieg promoting the series, she did see the first movie mostly out of curiosity. Still, she understands the attraction that younger audiences have for vampires ... for she has experienced it herself. “They don’t grow old, and they never die,” she says. “It’s like a darker version a Peter Pan. Vampires get to do whatever they want and are never held accountable. “What’s not to like?” Contact Brett Buckner at brett.buckner@yahoo.com .

Self-life of the undead A brief history of ‘real’ vampires By Brett Buckner Special to the Star
Though they mostly haunt the box office and bookstores today, vampires have long struck terror in the hearts of mortals. “The vampire is such a potent horror-film image that the historical vampire is now all but forgotten,” writes Timothy Taylor in The Buried Soul: How Humans Invented Death, “and when not forgotten, doubted in every aspect. Fear of the returning dead has a long prehistory.” Vampires — legions of the undead — have been a cultural force dating back to the early Slavic superstitions of the 5th century, though the term itself didn’t come into English use until 1732, handed down from German and French accounts of vampires discovered in eastern Europe. In Slavic myths, there were many words for “vampire” with different shades of meaning that refer to werewolves, revenants, demons that eat the sun and moon, humans who can shape-shift, witches and monstrous sucking animals, as well as living corpses. Vampires in this region of Europe were also seen as enemies of the faith that swept through in the 9th and 10th centuries — namely Christianity. Christian missionaries dismissed the ancient deities and spirits, but many Slavs simply combined the old with the new — vampires may be thwarted by a crucifix. In the Balkans, where a vampire cult flourished in the late Middle Ages, a vampire was suspected of infesting a graveyard when people reported seeing apparitions of the dead that pestered them and bit them, or sat on their chests and suffocated them at night. Vampires were also blamed for plagues, invisible terrors that bothered people at night and wasting diseases that brought death. A search of graves was made and, if a body was found seemingly incorrupt with signs of fresh blood on it, it was decreed a vampire and destroyed either by being dismembered, burned or staked through the heart. There are, of course, scientific explanations for “vampirism” — namely premature burial, comas and vegetative states. And in the living, there are medical conditions to explain certain attributes often believed to be those belonging to vampires. These conditions can include rabies, photophobia (sensitivity to light) and more extreme conditions such as porphyria ( a congenitally produced syndrome in which sensitivity to light is accompanied by blistering and scarring in sunlight, vomiting and various psychoses.) And in the case of actual corpses, there are also explanations as to why they may be unearthed and found to be eerily vampire-like. The angles and lengths of teeth, hair and nails can shift in relation to skin and gum surfaces, and pulmonary edema can cause blood-

stained fluid to escape from around the mouth. “All these features, observed frequently by pathologists in exhumed bodies,” Taylor writes, “would obviously have lent support to folks’ beliefs in undead blood-suckers.” In his book, Taylor recounts the story of a Romanian peasant named Dinu Gheorghita who died in 1914 swiftly followed by several grandchildren. She was exhumed and, because she had not decomposed, was believed to be a vampire and blamed for the deaths. Several villagers carried her into the forest and put her under a great tree in a remote part of the forest. There they disemboweled here, took out her heart, from which blood was flowing, cut it into four, put it on hot cinders and burnt it. They took the ashes and gave them to children to drink with water. They threw the body on the fire, burnt it and buried the ashes of the body. Then the deaths ceased. Yet, from the ashes of such stories, the Hollywood vampire emerged, spawned from the iconic image first created by Bram Stoker in Dracula and re-imagined countless times by each new generation of author and filmmaker. While the monster must always die in the end, the vampire as mythic icon is truly immortal. Contact Brett Buckner at brett.buckner@yahoo.com

Hollywood gushes bloodsuckers in current vampire boom By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — Vampires have been an eternal force in Hollywood horror since silent-movie days, yet they have risen to new heights as the Twilight franchise, TV’s True Blood and other incarnations put the bite on viewers. In studio flicks, independent and foreign-language films and small-screen series, there are more bloodsuckers out there today than you can shake a wooden stake at. With so many vampires afoot, will Hollywood’s favorite night creatures lose their flavor with fans? “Will there be a vampire glut? Will the vampire market crash? I don’t know,” said Chris Weitz, director of November’s The Twilight Saga: New Moon, part two in the movie series based on Stephenie Meyer’s vampire-romance novels. “It’s kind of the only growth industry in America, that I can tell.” So many of Dracula’s brethren are being sired nowadays that Weitz and his brother have dueling vampire films out this fall. Paul Weitz’s Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant opened Oct. 23, with John C. Reilly as a centuries-old bloodsucker in a traveling freak show. While vampires have a strong pulse in Hollywood, some expect the genre could bleed out from overexposure. “Sometimes there are trends with audiences and with film studios, TV stations, and they go wild, and they run like lemmings in one direction until they go over the cliff,” said Werner Herzog, who directed 1979’s Nosferatu the Vampyre. “The genre of vampire films in its darkness and in its nightmarish aspect is a genre that will be forever, but sometimes, you have an overload, an overkill, and when the heap gets too, too big, everybody starts to turn away.” In his 2007 Antarctica documentary Encounters at the End of the World, Herzog wisecracked that he was not making yet another movie about penguins, a reference to a spate of films on the cold-weather birds. Penguins reached a glut after only a handful of movies, but the sheer variety of vampire stories lends them superhuman durability for exploring the issues and fears of mortals. “I think vampires are richer veins than penguins,” Reilly said. “There’s only so much you can do with penguins. They’re

— The Lost Boys cute. They can’t fly. They live in snow and ice.” Vampires benefit from modern fans’ hunger for fantastic stories. Otherworldly tales once were aimed mostly at specialized horror, science-fiction or fantasy audiences, with a Star Wars or an E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial occasionally breaking out to huge crowds. Movie-goers today besiege theaters for out-of-this-world stories, from Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings to the latest adventures of Batman or the X-Men. “We’re at a supernatural height right now with superheroes and science fiction. I think it’s all being embraced, with Battle-
star Galactica being a critical hit and Iron Man being a huge mainstream hit,” said Meredith Woerner, whose book Vampire Taxonomy: Identifying and Interacting With the Modern-day Bloodsucker hits stores in early November. “It’s a great time where people are ready for some magic.” Vampires have been hardy souls on screen for ages, dating back to 1920s and ’30s classics such as Nosferatu, Vampyr and the original Dracula, with Bela Lugosi. Dracula has been played by countless actors, among them Lon Chaney Jr., Christopher Lee, Frank Langella and Gary Oldman. Movies and shows such as The Lost
Favorite pop culture vampires It’s been estimated that over the last half century there have been more than 169 movies, 106 books and some 62 seasons worth of vampire-related story lines. Here are but a few: ✟ Bram Stoker’s Dracula — first published in 1897 and was initially considered to be a commercial failure ✟ Béla Lugosi — the original Dracula of stage and screen ✟ Christopher Lee — The Horror of Dracula, 1958 and its 1966 sequel, Dracula: The Prince of Darkness ✟ Blacula — 1972 horror/comedy starring William Marshall ✟ Count Chocula — monsterthemed children’s cereal character along with Franken Berry and BooBerry ✟ Salem’s Lot — Stephen King novel published in 1975 ✟ Anne Rice — published various novels around the Vampire Lestat, starting with Interview with a Vampire in 1976, followed by other titles including Queen of the Damned and Memnoch the Devil ✟ Nosferatu the Vampyre — silent film from 1922 that created the vermin-like Count Orlok (a name changed forced because producers were denied the right to reproduce Stoker’s original)
✟ Dark Shadows — vampire soap opera debuted on ABC in 1966 staring Barnabas Collins ✟ Count von Count — Sesame Street character debuted in 1972 ✟ Love at First Bite — comedy horror film from 1979 starring the ever-tan George Harrison ✟ The Lost Boys — A 1987 teen horror film directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. Is credited with opening the vampire myth to younger audiences ✟ Buffy the Vampire Slayer — first a movie, released in 1992, followed by a TV show, starring Sarah Michelle Geller that ran from 1997-2003. This made vampires cool again ✟ Blade trilogy — starring Wesley Snipes, based on a comic book ✟ Underworld — series of movies featuring races of both werewolves and vampires at war with one another ✟ Twilight — series of novels (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn) written by Stephanie Myers focuses on a love story between Bella and a 104-year-old vampire named Edward Cullen ✟ True Blood — HBO series based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries written by Charlaine Harris
Boys and Buffy the Vampire Slayer transfused teen power to vampire tales, helping to open the current vein of hip, pretty young dead things in the genre. “What’s particular about them now is it’s coinciding with the optimum market for TV and film. It’s that young market, it’s kind of the Dawson’s Creek thing,” said Michael Sheen, who co-stars as the vampire Aro in the Twilight sequel and played a werewolf in the Underworld vampire franchise. “Whereas in the past, I don’t think that has been the case. The symbol of vampires has never quite hit that marketing gold.” Along with True Blood, recent TV bloodsucker sagas include The Vampire Diaries, Blood Ties, Moonlight and Britain’s Young Dracula and Being Human. Among recent and upcoming bigscreen stories are Blood: The Last Vampire, the horror comedy Transylmania and Ethan Hawke’s vampire armageddon thriller Daybreakers. Twilight leads the way, its love story between an immortal vampire stud (Robert Pattinson) and a sensitive school girl (Kristen Stewart) proving irresistible to teen and older audiences alike. So far, fans seem willing to devour as many vampire stories as Hollywood can dish out. “The truth is, you can’t have too many vampire movies, just like you can’t have too many zombie movies. Each movie is capable of being allegories for different things,” said Cirque du Freak star Reilly. “Ours is this whole other universe for vampires that have nothing to do with Dracula or good-looking teenagers making out. It’s this crazy underworld that exists, more like Harry Potter than Twilight, because the regular human world doesn’t even know they’re there.” While their popularity may ebb and flow, vampires always will have a place in the audience’s heart, said Nicolas Cage, who starred in 1989’s Vampire’s Kiss and was a producer on 2000’s Shadow of the Vampire. “The vampire is always going to be fascinating,” Cage said. “It’s like the vigilante cop, or it’s like the cowboy or the Western.
