MONDAY RECORD YOUR GUIDE TO PUBLIC RECORDS AND VITAL STATISTICS IN CALHOUN COUNTY
Off to work ... with a party supply company
Local company specializes in fun By Bill Edwards bedwards@annistonstar.com
It’s not all fun and games when you go off to work by renting, transporting and operating party equipment. There’s the scheduling. The tax forms. The safety rules. But at the end of the day, when the kids have had fun and the adults seem to want you back next time, it’s all worthwhile for Terry and Frances Howell. They’re the owners and primary employees of Howell Vending and Party Rental LLC, a nine-year-old business that supplies everything from tables and chairs to inflatable “rooms” where youngsters can bounce around and play games. Need a cotton-candy machine or a train for the little ones to ride in? They’ve got that, too, the latter driven by Frances’ 68-year-old father, “Red” Harrelson. The attention to detail and logistics is something Terry Howell honed in 25 years of employment at BAE, a local defense contractor. Howell, a 53-year-old Saks native, was a BAE production supervisor, but he had another, more informal job at the company, especially important at company picnic time. “I was on the activities committee at BAE — I was one of the people who searched for Please see work ❙ Page 3

Bankruptcies
Continued from Page 1
A Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows the debtor to retain certain exempt property, but the debtor’s remaining property is gathered and sold by a trustee from which creditors will receive payment. It may also be used by businesses which wish to terminate their business. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy enables debtors, through court supervision and protection, to propose and carry out a repayment plan under which creditors are paid, in full or in part, in installments over a three-year period. During that time, debtors are prohibited from starting or continuing collection efforts. The following bankruptcies declared by Calhoun County residents were recorded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Alabama last week:

people who do what I do now.” Around 1999, that sideline directed his life down a new path. For many months, he researched what would be required to run a party rental business. He quit BAE in January 2000, got married to Frances in May, and they opened the business in July. “I married an unemployed man,” said Frances Howell, who noted that her new husband had promised her that within three years she’d be able to quit her job at Citi Financial and work with him. That indeed happened. “This is so much easier,” she said, laughing. The ambition hasn’t stopped with what the Howells say is the largest party supply business in this section of the state, all run out of the couple’s Saks home. “Splitting at the seams is what’s going on here,” said Terry Howell. He said the couple’s purchase of six acres in Wellington will permit plenty of expansion, including the construction of an enclosed area to host their own parties. Meanwhile, the company’s dependence on travel forces Frances Howell to put her background in finances to good use. That’s because the payment of taxes and licenses can be daunting. Some cities impose a special equipment rental tax, and making the correct payment to obtain any city’s business license compels the Howells to find out exactly where their event is being held if they’ve never been to that area before. Accurate scheduling is necessary to ensure the company’s five vans pick up and/or deliver supplies exactly when the client needs them. “When you do 13 events in a day, there’s quite a bit of orchestrating that goes on,” said Terry Howell, referring to this past Saturday when Halloween and fall festival events kept ’em moving.

Frances Howell adjusts the bell on the kiddie train owned by her company, Howell Vending and Party Rental LLC. His wife concurred, saying that if there’s a rough side to the job, it’s putting everyone where they need to be. The couple count her brother, Tommy Harrelson, as its third full-time employee, in addition to the slew of part-timers they know and trust to drive the vans. “Very stressful days (are) when you’re doing the schedule and everything starts and stops at the same time ... it’s kind of hairy,” she said. But for Mrs. Howell, there’s an upside to all the work: When the occasion calls for a real live clown, she’s it. “I go out there for three or four hours in face paint. It’s a lot of fun,” she said, adding that sometimes when she returns to the party site to pick up tables and chairs, no one recognizes her as the clown. The Halloween schedule represented one final flurry of activity before the winter doldrums set

in. Terry Howell said people don’t need their services all that much November through February. That’s the time the business conducts maintenance on its many moving parts, from some 40 different games and “moon bounce” set-ups to the vehicles that haul them around. As the company’s vans say on the side, “Safety is priority 1, fun is priority 2.” That means the Howells and their employees follow proper setup and operational procedures, taking into account whether the event is private with controlled access or public, where anyone can drop by. Just for fun and games. Restaurant inspections Here are food service establishments recently inspected by the Calhoun County Health Department, along with scores. A score of 100 indicates the inspector found no deficiencies. Potentially hazardous deficiencies (four- or five-point demerit items) are noted. These must be corrected immediately and inspectors say they are often corrected while the inspection is underway. Restaurants earning below 70 must raise their scores within seven days or face closure.
