‘Idol’ stars to perform in Oxford realm of rock. Since her time on Idol (season six), she has toured North America on the American Idol Live Tour and performs around the country showcasing her original music. She is co-host on the FOX Reality show American Idol Extra. Singer/songwriter/actor David Hernandez, an Idol 2008 finalist, has been writing and recording music since he was 15. His most important invitation to perform so far came when he was asked to sing at the Inaugural Kick-Off Celebration ball for President Barack Obama. And, the Phoenix, Ariz., native has landed a principal role in the movie Synthetic Truth. The 12-member Oxford Arts Council makes sure that this area has artistic entertainment year-round, and this commitment for Oxford’s citizens is a daily declaration on their individual parts. They provide entertainment for Senior Days in February, the Freedom Festival on Independence Day at Oxford Lake and coordinate home Christmas decorating contests in the fall. Next year they will host the Birmingham Children’s Theatre production of The Wizard of Oz March 18 at the Oxford Civic Center. The Glenn Miller Band is scheduled to perform June 3. “But the Idol show is our most ambitious project so far,” said Elaine Edmundson, vice president of the group. Haynes and Gloria Horton, president of the council, agree. “Technically, it is the most challenging,” Haynes said. “But it’s good, for we are learning how to provide what the artists require. We look forward to the time when the performing arts center can be built by the high school here. If the funding comes through and it’s built, then we’ll be ready to supply some important artists.” Anyone interested in joining the Oxford Arts Council is welcome to talk to any of the three officers. The meetings are the first Monday evening of each month at the Oxford Public Library. Tickets are $20 and seating is limited and non-refundable. For more information, call Haynes at 832-0000. Tickets may be purchased at Cheaha Bank and Noble Bank in Oxford, Quintard Mall guest services desk and from Oxford Arts Council members.

Four former American Idol stars will perform Christmas songs and recent Idol hits on Dec. 4 to launch the Christmas season with music. But you don’t have to turn on FOX 6 or travel to a larger city to enjoy them. Instead, simply go to Oxford’s First Baptist Church at 7:30 p.m. that Hervey Friday and you’ll Folsom Artists in Action see Idol finalists entertaining with solos, duets and ensemble pieces. The Idol stars, representing seasons six through eight of the show, are presented by the Oxford Arts Council. Alexis Grace, Gina Glocksen, David Hernandez and Michael Sarver are embarking on a holiday tour beginning Dec. 2, traveling from Lakeland, Fla., to Cleveland, Ohio. Their performance in Oxford will have an added local touch — students from Oxford High School and Gadsden State Community College will serve as back-up singers for some of the selections. As holiday melodies go, these voices should be the brightest and best, Oxford Arts Council members believe. “These are emerging young singers who are on their way to important futures,” said Theresa Haynes, the group’s treasurer. “It will be interesting to follow their careers.” Grace has performed in bands, sang in choirs, played the guitar and written music since she was in high school in Memphis, Tenn. With her father’s instrumental group for singer Ann Peebles, she has been lead singer and performed in venues around Memphis and the region. Season eight’s American Idol put the small singer with the big soulful voice on national television for the first time. She currently hosts a show on radio station Q107.5 in Memphis. Sarver’s ambition is to become a solo force in country music. After being a part of the American Idol Live Tour, which recently ended, and a finalist in season eight, he is now recording his debut album. Although Glocksen was often referred to as the “rocker chick,” according to Internet sources, her musical skills range far beyond the

No Doubt performs at the F1 Rocks concert in Singapore on Sept. 25.

No Doubt sues video game maker over ‘Band Hero’ Associated Press LOS ANGELES — No Doubt on Wednesday sued video game maker Activision for putting words in band members’ mouths. The band sued Activision Publishing Inc. over a feature in the new “Band Hero” game that allows players to control virtual band members and have them sing other artists’ songs. The lawsuit claims a feature allows players to have lead singer Gwen Stefani perform suggestive lyrics from the Rolling Stones’ hit “Honky Tonk Women.” The suit also notes a virtual version of bassist Tony Kanal can be made to sing his band’s hit “Just a Girl,” but with Stefani’s voice. The game, an offshoot of Activision’s popular “Guitar Hero” series, went on sale Tuesday. The company, which is based in Santa Monica, Calif., said in a statement that it engaged in extensive negotiations with No Doubt’s management and have a valid written agreement for their participation in “Band Hero.” “As a result, Activision believes it is within its legal rights with respect to the use and portrayal of the band members in the game and that this lawsuit is without merit,” the statement said.

No Doubt’s lawsuit states the band objected to the “Character Manipulation Feature” in “Band Hero” that allows players to use No Doubt’s likeness to perform other bands’ songs, but Activision refused to change the game. The feature turns the band “into a virtual karaoke circus act,” the lawsuit claims. The band is seeking unspecified damages and an order barring Activision from using band members’ likeness to perform other artists’ songs. In September, the widow and former bandmates of the late Kurt Cobain said they were dismayed that the likeness of the Nirvana frontman could be used to play songs by other artists in “Guitar Hero 5.” Activision said they secured the necessary rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement to use the singer’s likeness as a fully playable character. Taylor Swift and Adam Levine are the other musicians featured in the offshoot of the popular rhythm game franchise for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii and Nintendo DS. Previous “Guitar Hero” editions have featured the likenesses of Jimi Hendrix, Billy Corgan, Sting, Ozzy Osbourne, Carlos Santana, Johnny Cash and members of Aerosmith.

Carrie Underwood looks for something different Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Popcountry has made superstars out of acts like Rascal Flatts, Taylor Swift and more, but the term is not particularly endearing in Nashville, even to the artists who have come to define it. “I hate saying pop-country — I hate using that,” Carrie Underwood says during a recent interview while talking about some of her favorite artists. Underwood, who has sold more than 10 million albums since her 2005 debut with hits that have appealed to both the MTV and CMT set, prefers to describe such music as “contemporary.” But she acknowledges the sonic shift between some of her childhood idols and today’s country stars. “I loved Alan Jackson and Brooks & Dunn, those were the people that really first made me love country music. Then there were people like Bryan White who were like coming on the scene,” the 26-year-old Oklahoma native explains. “And he was like one of the people that was like ‘OK, they don’t have to all sound like this.’ People can sound all kind of ways. And he was young and hot.” “I’ve had people tell me, ‘I never listened to country music until I saw you on American Idol, and now I’ve been to a Rascal Flatts concerts, and I went and saw so and so,”’ she adds. “And it’s wonderful that we all kind of have our place in country music and we all pull listeners in for different reasons, and because of that we can hear everything.” Her third album, Play On, out this week, stretches her country boundaries even further. Not only did the she re-team with American Idol judge and pop hitmaker Kara DioGuardi, who worked with her on her multiplatinum sophomore album, Carnival Ride, she also worked with producers known for producing smashes for the likes of Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson and Katy Perry (Max Martin), and Eminem (Mike Elizondo). “I love all kinds of music and I think it’s all kinds of fun when you take a slightly different element and you bring it to you and

Country music singer Carrie Underwood releases her third album, ‘Play On.’ incorporate that into your music,” she says. There are high expectations for Play On. Underwood, whose debut CD Some Hearts sold about 6 million copies and whose second album sold nearly 3 million, is expected to debut at the top with this record. But not everyone was happy about her choice of collaborators on Play On. “I think everybody kind of freaked out at first. And it was something that we did take into consideration, that people would be like, ‘What’s going on here?”’ she recalls. “Everybody kind of flipped out over Mike Elizondo, who I really like,” she says of the producer and songwriter, who co-wrote the CD’s first single, “Cowboy Casanova,” a country and pop hit. “They’re like, ‘He’s a rap producer.’ And it’s like, well, yes, he has done that, but he’s also worked with Nelly Furtado and Pink and Fiona Apple. I’m just another name he’s adding to his resume of all different kinds of music.” Play On is still very much

country — there’s banjo, pedal steel and mandolin — but Underwood has added different musical textures, which points to her maturation as an artist. “I’m not trying to move anywhere away from country music,” she declares while sitting in a production studio, dressed comfortably in jeans, a T-shirt and sandals. “I love what I do. And let’s say ‘Cowboy Casanova’ crosses over, it’s going to cross over as it is — fiddles, steel and all. Growing up I never liked it when people would have a country song and then change it for a different format.” And while Underwood had great pop success, she’s still firmly a country queen. She nabbed the Academy of Country Music’s entertainer of the year this spring, and has four nominations for Nov. 11’s Country Music Association awards, for which she will also serve as host for the second straight year. But Underwood is adept at bridging the gaps between country and pop, and does so again on Play On.

LOS ANGELES — Rod Stewart grew up idolizing soul singers like Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and Otis Redding. On his new album, Soulbook, he gets a chance to pay tribute to his childhood idols in song — and even gets a chance to sing with one of them on the CD. Smokey Robinson is one of the guest stars on Soulbook, which features Stewart singing some of soul music’s most revered tunes. It follows in Stewart’s trend of recording classic covers (he had a resurgence with his Great American Songbook album series). In an interview, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said he was elated to sing “Tracks of My Tears,” which Robinson recorded with the Miracles stewart decades ago on Motown, with the legendary singer and composer. “I grew up listening to Smokey Robinson to have that guy come into the studio and sing on ‘Tracks Of My Tears’ (was great),” he said. Stevie Wonder also joined Stewart to sing one of his signature songs, “My Cherie Amour,” another highlight for Stewart. Even calling Wonder on the phone turned out to be a treat for Stewart. “When you phone Stevie up ... he sings his answer. He goes (sings) ‘Hello. I’m not in today but if you like to leave a message ... call me back,’ He does this great thing, so I phoned him back and (sang) ‘Stevie, thanks for playing on ‘My Cherie Amour,”’ Stewart said. “And when he had done ‘My Cherie Amour,’ he left me a message at the end of the track said, ‘Rod, I am so thankful I was able to play on your track on my song. May the good lord be with you.’ Such a sweetheart.” The CD also features appearances by Mary J. Blige and Jennifer Hudson. Soulbook was released in October. Now that Stewart has taken on soul music, he’s willing to take other genres, even the blues. “I would love to sing all that stuff. I really would. It could go on and on and on,” he said. “The one thing I won’t be doing is I won’t be writing any songs. It has gone past me now, the writing phase. It was always a struggle.”

vein of interior sadness than anything on Pinkerton. Cuomo still turns out more functional hooks before his breakfast tequila than most bands get in a career. But how does one appropriately respond to tracks like the buffetsoundtrack sitar jam “Love Is the Answer” and the Warrant-worthy ode to post-puberty “The Girl Got Hot?” Maybe just relax and order a double. — August Brown, Los Angeles Times

Rickie Lee Jones celebrates anniversary of debut album Rickie Lee Jones Balm in Gilead

This is a big year for Rickie Lee Jones: It’s the 30th anniversary of the release of her self-titled debut album, which won her critical acclaim and the title of the Next Big Thing singer-songwriter. It’s also the year that her daughter, Charlotte Rose, turns 21, a milestone she celebrates in her new album’s opening track, “Wild Girl.” These anniversaries feed the sense that Jones is assessing her place in life as she’s on the cusp of turning 55. The

10 songs course through the highs and lows with equanimity, from the pride and hope in Charlotte she expresses to the kindheartedness she displays for those acquaintances who’ve moved on (“Old Enough,” “Bonfires”). Jones arrives at acceptance, if not always approval, of the complexities of adult life. But by the closing track, “Bayless St.,” a reverie clothed in old-timey dobro, mandolin and slide guitar, she has found the peace in acceptance. — Randy Lewis, Los Angeles Times

Leslie’s CD is fun, but generic Ryan Leslie Transition

Nine months after putting out his debut CD to underwhelming response, Ryan Leslie is back, this time, with Transition. The transition doesn’t refer to his music. Instead, the singer says his sophomore disc was inspired by “a summer of secret love.” After that fling ended, the result became Transition: an 11-track set full of futuristic R&B tunes that finds the 31-year-old R&B-crooner sweet-talking his sweet hopeful. “I just want a girl that still looks good with no makeup,” he sings on the opening track, “Never Gonna Break Up,” promising to never break up if he found the one. Leslie’s outpouring of his summer

love is enjoyable at times, but the CD’s problem is its sound — vocally, lyrically and sonically. Like Leslie’s self-titled debut, released in February, it sounds too generic, which is unfortunate, for both him and the listener. The Harvard-educated musician, who wrote, produced and programmed the entire album, should try working with producers aside from himself. — Mesfin Fekadu, Associated Press

‘Glee’ soundtrack a treat for fans Various Glee: The Music, Volume 1

Fans of Fox’s irreverent musical comedy Glee will love this soundtrack, which includes 17 songs from the show about a high school glee club performed by its talented cast. They’ll remember cute teacher Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) pop-locking as he raps on Kanye West’s “Gold Digger,” feel self-centered star Rachel Berry’s (Lea Michele) heartache as she sings into a hairbrush on Rihanna’s “Take a Bow” and picture the fastpaced routine led by cheer captain Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron) to the Supremes’ “Keep Me Hanging On.” They’ll relish the harmonies and recall the group’s triumph on Queen’s “Somebody to Love” and smile again at Will’s bowling-alley duet with Kristin Chenoweth on Heart’s “Alone.” Though the vocal performances are top-notch, those unfamiliar with Glee may prefer the originals to the cover versions on the

soundtrack. But the album’s eclectic mix of songs has its own appeal: Where else would you find a mix tape that includes tracks from Neil Diamond, Young MC, REO Speedwagon and Cabaret? Non-Gleeks can also appreciate the innovative choral arrangements on Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin”’ and the girls’ background harmonies on the 1989 rap hit “Bust A Move.” Missing from the soundtrack, though, are the memorable mashups of Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life” with Usher’s “Confessions” and Beyonce’s “Halo” with Katrina and the Waves’ “Walking on Sunshine.” A second volume of Glee music is set to hit stores next month. — Sandy Cohen, Associated Press

Carrie Underwood shows maturation Carrie Underwood Play On

Carrie Underwood opens her third album with an audacious stomper, “Cowboy Casanova,” a put-down of a playboy that slyly references a famous quarterback Underwood briefly dated. But everything else about the bold, sassy tune looks forward, a reflection of Play On, which aims to illustrate Underwood’s maturation and growth. On her first two albums, the American Idol winner worked to establish herself as a country music singer. Now that she’s the reigning Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year and Country Music Association Female Vocalist of the Year, Underwood looks to expand her boundaries. Primarily, she brings in several successful pop songwriters, including Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, hip-hop specialist Mike Elizondo (Eminem, 50 Cent) and

dance-pop producer Max Martin (Pink, Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson). At times, the pop collaborators strive to accentuate Underwood’s country roots. “Quitter” grounds its pop melody by playing the main riff on mandolin. So it goes throughout Play On: Underwood balances fat-chord rockers like “Undo It” with bubbly pop songs like “This Time” and beautiful ballads like “What Can I Say,” a duet with the trio Sons of Sylvia. In the end, this tremendously gifted singer proves she can move in several directions while always sounding like she’s moving forward. — Michael McCall, Associated Press

To those taken aback by Rivers Cuomo’s newfound embrace of songs about slaying honeys in the club while downing Patron shots on Raditude, he has this to say to you — “If you was me honey, you would do it too.” Grammar aside, there’s a kernel of truth to this lyric. Name any neurotic, lovelorn bedroom rocker who, upon achieving unlikely arena-filling status, wouldn’t take full advantage of having Lil Wayne on speed dial, as evidenced by the rapper’s cameo on “Can’t Stop Partying.” The weird aftertaste of Raditude isn’t that Cuomo has so surrendered the oddball charm of his band’s first two albums, though. It’s that his late-career pursuit of mindless, opulent fun is so transparent that it almost taps a deeper

By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

The new Disney A Christmas Carol is another epic achievement in motion-capture animation, advancing the art form closer to photo-realism than The Polar Express or Beowulf. Dazzling, ornate visuals take us to the snowy London of 1837, swooping over its digital rooftops and down its digital chimneys. Faces take on musculature, expression and detail. But like those earlier films, and certainly to a greater degree given the pathos, warmth and wit of the story, A Christmas Carol lacks and needs — desperately — that human touch. That cinematic literalist Robert Zemeckis, who in Forrest Gump had a character say “I’m going to San Francisco” and then scored the scene with the pop song “If You’re Going to San Francisco,” gives us Dickens straight, no chaser. He grasps the tone of the Charles Dickens novel (darker than most film versions). He lays out the familiar story beats and even more familiar touchstone lines. “Make some slight provision for the poor ... Decrease the surplus population ... boiled in their own pudding ... Christmas? Bah, humbug.” And of course, that child’s Cockney declaration — “Gaw-bless us, every one!” But as Jim Carrey slings an English accent for Scrooge, an Irish one for the Ghost of Christmas Past and a vague Scots one for his Ghost of Christmas Present, as his skinnier, more curmudgeonly digital self

does little Scrooge dances and collapses into grief, I wanted to see the real Jim Carrey perform that. And I really missed having the great and real Gary Oldman, as Bob Cratchit, registering grief at Tiny Tim’s fate, and heartfelt shock at Mr. Scrooge’s conversion. What Zemeckis delivers is a spooky Christmas Carol, aptly released just a week after Halloween. A creepy quiet hangs over the tale of a wealthy miser who is taught the meaning of Christmas by a series of ghosts — corpses come to life, or in the case of the Ghost of Christmases Yet to Come, a spectral shadow, the literal Grim Reaper come to show Scrooge the error and evil of his ways. The laughs are few and very far between. Carrey’s Ghost of Christmas Past is a candle and the animated version of the actor goofs around with the idea of “flickering.” But that begs the question — “Why cast Jim Carrey if you’re not going to get him to be funny?” Turning him into Bacchus (the standard way of interpreting Christmas Present) and making him laugh and laugh is no substitute for the playfulness each of those roles allows. The digital avatars for Carrey, Oldman (Bob Cratchit), Colin Firth (as Scrooge’s nephew Fred) and Robin Wright Penn (as Fan and Belle) aren’t particularly flattering to the actors, who are recognizable but given Dickensian features. But by Fezziwig, that story still works and tugs at the heart. It would even if each ghost’s visit weren’t scored with overly-suitable Christmas carols. The chilling moments are many, as this gorgeouslooking Christmas Carol embraces, better than most, the novel’s cautionary and always timely message. When it comes to money, love and compassion, stinginess is no virtue. You simply cannot take any of them with you.

“Wacky” isn’t George Clooney’s strong suit as an actor. But it’s always at least amusing to watch the suave, silky leading man let his freak flag fly. It flutters and flaps in The Men Who Stare at Goats, an odder-than-odd farce about a small-town reporter (Ewan McGregor) who stumbles across the graduates of an Army “psychic” soldier program, self-described “Jedi Warriors” taught to fly, walk through walls, and practice mind control and “cloud bursting” — concentrating on a cloud until it breaks up, then taking the credit for it. And goat staring? That’s where these “remote viewing” psychics glare at a hapless farm animal until its heart stops. Bob Wilton (McGregor) is incredulous when he hears of this unit, even more so when he stumbles across its most famous member, Lyn Cassady (Clooney). Lyn, who goes by Skip, reluctantly regales Bob with tales of the glorious “Jedi” Bill Django (Jeff Bridges), whose battlefield epiphany in Vietnam sent him on a spirit quest that led to founding this “New Earth Army.” As Bob and Skip stumble into Iraq in the opening days of the war, Skip employs his training with daft conviction and Bob’s jaw drops further by the minute as they have accidents, endure kidnapping and run-ins with Skip’s New Earth Army nemesis. This movie from Clooney crony Grant Heslov struggles to be as giddy as its irreverent story and screwball characters promise. The laugh-out-loud moments and nutty characters (Bridges is perfect) strain to find each other in the absolute reality of Skip and Bob’s Iraqi Odyssey. Making the satire here funny, that “more of this film is true than you’d care to believe” claim in the opening credits, is difficult because, really, what’s so hard to believe? Cracks about this being a program the astrologybelieving Ronald Reagan “protected” seem straight out of a Reagan biography. It’s broad and yet realistic, silly and yet never exuberantly goofy. Thus, while The Men Who Stare at Goats may be the first movie to attempt an IED joke, that doesn’t mean they get a big laugh out of it.

By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

“I am actress Milla Jovovich,” the star says, directly to the audience as she introduces her new movie, The Fourth Kind. And those are pretty much the last true words out of her mouth in this gimmicky, “Yes, this really happened” alien-abduction horror hooey. It’s a film whose writer-director is so heavily invested in making us buy into it as “fact” that he wastes screen time on claims of veracity when he should have invested his movie with a few more genuinely hair-raising moments. Because even if his and his star’s pants are on fire this very moment, The Fourth Kind still manages a few good frights. Jovovich plays a Nome, Alaska, psychotherapist whose husband has died and whose sleep-deprived patients are telling her chilling, cryptic stories of

owls and abduction when she puts them under hypnosis. The conceit that writer-director Olatunde Osunsanmi milks for all it’s worth is that the “real” Dr. Abigail Tyler is shown in a video interview with the director for Chapman University, in which a cadaverous-looking actress narrates her story, her encounters with patients who flipped out and even killed themselves over what they’d experienced. The “reality” scenes are chilling enough, but the movie isn’t helped by a blank-faced turn by Jovovich, channeling her decades as a “if you smile or frown, you’ll wrinkle” model. She was never an actress with much range, but she was so much better in September’s A Perfect Getaway that it’s as if she was confused by the demand that she keep breaking the fourth wall in The Fourth Kind, telling us she’s an actress. Movies with actors are always fictional, even if based on a true story. There’s pretending, suspending of disbelief and fibbing going on. “The Fourth Kind” is a fraud, but that wouldn’t matter if it were scarier and better acted. Don’t blame Jovovich, though. It’s harder to act with your pants on fire.

Filmmaker Kate Churchill’s idea for a documentary — following a yoga newbie as he immerses himself in the discipline’s physical and spiritual culture for six months — sounds great on paper. And her gamely agreeable guinea pig, 29-year-old former journalist Nick Rosen, is honest about his skepticism. As a movie, however, it doesn’t really go anywhere. The climax of the movie eventually comes at the feet of the Guru of the Blissful Refuge. With his beatific smile, he opines that where Nick is at, doubts and all, is just fine. Which is an insight that Nick — and very likely most of his audience — already has. Contains a brief obscenity or two and sexual references.

The Ugly Truth

At a floundering Sacramento TV station, Abby (Katherine Heigl) can’t seem to keep her Nielsen ratings or her dating life steady. Then the TV station picks up a relationship advice spot hosted by the rakish, unshaven, semi-offensive Mike (Gerard Butler). Mike uses dirty words on air, Abby hates Mike, Mike doesn’t believe in love, Abby doesn’t believe in lust, unlikely friendship (and something more?) ensues. The script has an offkilter quality that makes it more impressive than its fluffier cousins. One se nses a gleefully dark,

ironic sensibility lurking in the minds of the film’s three female screenwriters. Contains sexual content and language.

Up

Pixar’s first foray into 3-D animation is a soaring, touching, funny and altogether buoyant movie that lives up to its title in spirit and in form. Ed Asner provides the voice behind Carl Fredricksen, a boxily built curmudgeon who decides to fly his house to South America by way of a bunch of balloons. Newcomer Jordan Nagai voices the young scout Russell, who comes along for the ride, to Carl’s initial consternation and eventual comfort. Among Up’s myriad pleasures is watching this inter-generational friendship bloom, at a time when pop culture seems to be dominated by self-absorbed tweens. Adults will appreciate the finer things in Up, including a sublime prologue limning the hopes and heartbreaks of Carl’s life, a passage worthy of Chaplin in its heartbreaking poignancy. Contains peril and action. ‘Red Dawn’ gets a makeover By Julie Hinds Detroit Free Press

Warner Bros. Pictures/MCT

James Marsden and Cameron Diaz in a scene from the new thriller, ‘The Box.’

A ‘Box’ not worth opening the box H Rating: PG-13 for thematic elements, some violence and disturbing images Running time: 1:56 STARRING: Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, Frank Langella

By Rafer Guzman Newsday

The object that gives this movie its title looks intriguing indeed, made of handsome hardwood and topped by a large, red button. Press it, and you will receive $1 million in cash — but someone you don’t know will die. In The Box, this choice is presented not by Howie Mandel but by Frank Langella as a horribly disfigured but well-tailored man named Arlington Steward. One day in 1976 he pays a visit to NASA engineer Arthur Lewis (James Marsden) and his schoolteacher wife, Norma (Cameron Diaz). They could use the money: He has hit a salary plateau, and Norma’s school has stopped offering cut-rate tuition for their son, Walter (Sam Oz Stone). The movie’s moral crux comes from Richard Matheson’s 1970 story Button, Button, which has been adapted before, into a 1986 episode of The Twilight Zone. In hindsight, the writer-director of The Box, Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko), may be realizing that the shorter format was the better one. Aware that audiences wouldn’t sit through two hours of yes or no, deal or no deal, Kelly pads his film with an incoherent conspiracy plot (Steward’s first name is a hint) and several bor-

5 things you need to know about ‘The Box’ 1. The original version of The Box was a short story by Richard Matheson that was published as Button, Button in the June 1970 issue of Playboy. 2. Button, Button was also adapted for an episode of The Twilight Zone revival that aired on March 7, 1986. The couple who received the mysterious box were played by Brad Davis and Mare Winningham. 3. Basil Hoffman, who played the mysterious Mr. Steward in The Twilight Zone episode, has a small role in The Box. 4. In the movie, James Marsden plays a NASA engineer in a small Virginia town. Director Richard Kelly’s father worked at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., during the 1970s. 5. In the short story, the couple would receive $50,000 if they pushed the button. The amount increased to $200,000 in The Twilight Zone episode and to $1 million in the movie. — Andy Edelstein, Newsday rowed half-notions. The townsfolk start acting like invaders from Mars. A space odyssey begins. And it looks like this might be the day the Earth stands still. When The Box starts babbling about religion, you’ll have long stopped caring. But you have a choice: If you stay at home, you will save $10 — and a movie you don’t know will die.

DETROIT — It’s a quiet afternoon in downtown Detroit as an invasion is in progress. Soldiers and shabbily-dressed civilians are standing at a cordoned-off area around Griswold and Michigan Avenue that’s sprinkled with military vehicles, red banners and propaganda posters. A large platform holds somber-looking dignitaries in dark suits and uniforms. “We are not your enemies,” says a man at a podium. This occupying force is the cast and crew of Red Dawn, the remake of the 1984 action flick that’s been filming since September in metro Detroit and is expected to stick around until early December. It’s one of the biggest movies to come to Michigan recently, with an estimated budget of more than $40 million — and one of the splashiest, considering the many explosions that have been staged for the shoot. Red Dawn, which has filmed in city and wooded settings, is another example of Michigan’s versatility as a location, says Janet Lockwood, director of the Michigan Film Office. But the project also has a unique niche. While locally made films like Gran Torino and Whip It have had prestige and star power, they haven’t been cultural talkers — the kind of works that generate publicity with edgy, audacious themes. Red Dawn, set to open in November 2010, is becoming a talker. The Web is littered with unauthorized photos and videos of the production and fan speculation on the updated story. The interest is fueled by the lasting resonance of the original movie, which had a cast of rising stars (including a pre-Dirty Dancing Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey) and exquisite timing: It came out in 1984, an era when the Cold War was still kicking and President Ronald Reagan was calling the Soviet Union an evil empire. The story of high-school kids banding together to defend themselves against invading Russians (and Cubans and Nicaraguans) was called corny and xenophobic by some critics. But it made a big impression on Gen Y viewers at the time. “It had a huge, awesome impact ... to think of the Russians taking us over,” says Andrew Esslinger, 34, of Detroit, who used to re-enact scenes as a kid. This time, the cast is equally fresh-faced and intriguing and the enemies are the Russians and the Chinese. But the essential theme of young people banding together is the same, and it could tap into the worries of 2009. “Red Dawn is playing to the current moment. People feel kind of isolated and alone ... anxious about domestic issues — the economy, health care, jobs — and we feel anxious about what’s going on around the globe,” says Jerry Herron, an American studies professor at Wayne State University. Producer Tripp Vinson says he can’t talk about the storyline yet, but he says the reboot is “heavily inspired” by the original. “I think we have our work cut out for us, certainly. ... There’s a lot of fans out there that loved the original,” says Vinson. “All I can tell you is we spent a lot of time thinking about the story and how to augment it to make it work in today’s world. And I think we’ve done a pretty good job of that.”

★ Big Bird’s still huge as ‘Sesame Street’ hits 40

Big Bird and friends will help celebrate ‘Sesame Street’s’ 40th anniversary Tuesday. continuing evolution. “It was always designed to emulate the TV-viewing environment,” she notes. “Back in 1969, it had a magazine format that emulated what was then on television.” To meet expectations of its audience 40 years later, each new episode has been reformatted as an hourlong block composed of modular programming parts. Murray Monster, a lively orange Muppet, hosts each episode’s four segments. These include Abby Cadabby in the new Abby’s Flying Fairy School, which marks the first time a Sesame Street character has been transformed into CGI animation. The program is also kicking off My World Is Green & Growing, a two-year science initiative designed to increase positive attitudes toward nature and the environment. With that in mind, First

Lady Michelle Obama visits Sesame Street to plant vegetable seeds with Elmo and several young flesh-and-blood gardeners. Then Big Bird steps up. “Wow, did I just hear right?” he says. “The first lady eats seeds? I love seeds!” Not exactly, says Mrs. Obama, but “I do eat what grows from these seeds.” Big Bird absorbs this information with the thoughtfulness of any curious 6-year-old, which is what he is. But that wasn’t how he was originally hatched. “For the first few shows, he was just a silly, goofy guy,” recalls Spinney. “Then one day I said, ‘Big Bird should be a kid. Forget the fact that he’s eight feet tall.’ And real children accepted him.” Indeed, Big Bird fast became a signature figure on Sesame Street. Early on, he appeared solo on the cover

of Time magazine, which dubbed his show “TV’s Gift to Children.” But even if he has never grown older, he has never stood still. Spinney continues to refine the performance. “I study tapes to see how to get new expressions out of his face,” Spinney says. “I see something good that I did, and I take note to make sure I do it again.” As the silver-haired, nattily bearded Spinney speaks with a reporter in his dressing room, Big Bird’s lower half is hanging in the closet: fuzzy orange fleece pants with platter-size feet, into which Spinney climbs almost like pulling on waders. Then, on the set, with an assistant’s help, he encases himself in the feathered yellow body and head before each scene is taped. A tiny television monitor harnessed to his chest lets him glimpse the outside world. He recites Big Bird’s lines as his upraised right hand supports the head and animates its mouth and eyes. “The head weighs about 4 1/2 pounds,” reports Spinney. “One fellow says, ‘That’s no big deal, I can do that.’ And I said, ‘All right. Let’s hold our hand up for five minutes. You don’t even have to put anything in it.’ And in a couple of minutes, he said, ‘My God!’ “There’s a rule with puppetry: If it’s comfortable, you’re probably doing it wrong.” Spinney laughs. “My arm has gotten much stronger than it was when I started. I’m really

great at painting ceilings.” Spinney is one of but a few charter members of the show still on the Street. Among them: Bob McGrath (Bob) and Loretta Long (Susan), as well as camera man Frankie Biondo. They and so many others pioneered a strategy for channeling television to help underprivileged youngsters. Cradled by a nonprofit organization (now called Sesame Workshop), the mission continues, its mandate expanded to reach middle-income kids, too. Just as in the formulation of the show’s original game plan, research continues to play a major role. “That is the model that Sesame Street has always been based on: The education and research department works hand-in-hand with producers,” says Rosemarie Truglio, who heads up Sesame Workshop’s research effort. In-house testing helps identify key curriculum goals, shape the show’s content and track its success. Meanwhile, independent academic researchers have conducted more than 1,000 studies, making Sesame Street the most researched TV show in history. Last season, Sesame Street averaged more than 5 million viewers each week, and beyond that, logged 135 million impressions through media sources other than PBS between January and September.

NEW YORK — Big Bird is leaving Sesame Street! That’s what he decides on the Sesame Street season opener. A rapping real-estate agent pitches him on migrating to a new habitat (“habitat,” the episode’s “Word on the Street”). After sizing up a beach and a swamp for his new habitat, Big Bird chooses a rain forest. But then he comes to his senses with a musical number. “Sesame Street is my habitat!” he sings. “Sesame Street is my home!” Indeed, Big Bird — that towering, yellow-feathered 6-year-old — has been calling Sesame Street home for four decades, ever since the show premiered on Nov. 10, 1969. Now, as it marks its 40th anniversary on Tuesday on PBS (check local listings), he remains an essential member of the flock. He is still brought to life by Caroll Spinney, who also plays trash-can denizen Oscar the Grouch. Hand-picked by Muppetmeister Jim Henson, Spinney was 35 when Sesame Street began. He turns 76 the day after Christmas. In his dressing room at Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens, where the show is taped, he was pondering an existential question not long ago. “If you didn’t know when you were born, how old would you think you are?” he mused. “I can apply that to Sesame Street’s longevity: It seems like years, but I’d NEVER guess 40!” Maybe that’s because the self-renewing Sesame Street is forever young. A realm of sunny days where everything’s A-OK, the series starts its new season with episode 4187, which features the letter H and, naturally, the number 40. With it and the 25 new hours that follow, Sesame Street will continue to explore its chosen habitat — and experiment with how it does the job. “We think of every year as experimental,” says CarolLynn Parente, the show’s executive producer, “and this new season is just part of that

Band” had over them, such as drums and vocals. The problem is that these don’t work nearly as well as they should. To make matters worse, Neversoft seems to worry more about cranking out a new game than fixing the problems that plague their current releases. This leads to a series of mediocre games that have the same errors and glitches as the previous iterations. A “Rock Band”-style approach would do wonders for the “Guitar Hero” franchise. Limit the amount of crazy onscreen colors and fonts and focus on making the game fun to play. The biggest and easiest way to fix the “Guitar Hero” franchise is through downloadable content. The game already features downloadable songs, but they need to take it to the next level. Instead of releasing “Guitar Hero: Van Halen,” why not release a simple 10- or 12-song track pack with songs from the band? That would cut production cost while allowing the company to release more songs to the customer. The added benefit is the amount of songs that can be played by one game increases each time the track packs are released. This might lure in more customers because they will be more attracted to one game that can play many songs. Plus, downloadable content means the customers will be able to choose which songs they want. This makes the experience even more enjoyable because you don’t have to play through songs you don’t like. But I guess that would be too obvious. As it is now, Activision still hasn’t learned its lesson and will mostly likely continue to make Neversoft pump out these games on a regular basis. “DJ Hero” might be a step in the right direction, but it’s a little early to give the company credit. They simply need to find a better way to present and produce these games. It’s frustrating seeing a new “Guitar Hero” game released every month with the same issues as before. Frustrating enough to make me smash a plastic guitar.

Slinging a guitar not your style? Try ‘DJ Hero’ By RON HARRIS Associated Press

I was never much one for “Guitar Hero.” Playing “Smoke on the Water” 50 times while holding a pint-sized plastic guitar just never really got the blood flowing. I’ve been waiting for something better, and now it’s here. Activision’s new “DJ Hero” has solved my music video game plight. It’s got better music, better action and is frankly just a lot less goofy feeling than “Guitar Hero.” “DJ Hero” ($120; Xbox360, PS3, Wii; Rated “T” for teen) consists of the game disc and a wireless turntable and mixer controller. The mixer can be attached to either side of the turntable, so lefties and righties can scratch and fade as they choose. The turntable has a nicely weighted platter that spins freely both clockwise and counterclockwise when you nudge it. A row of three colored buttons sits on the platter, in similar fashion to the buttons on the “frets” of “Guitar Hero” controllers. On the screen, one side of a vinyl LP spins toward you with three brightly colored tracks (green, red and blue) to coincide with the physical buttons on the platter. When a hit point appears along the grooves on the screen, you’ll need to tap the corresponding button. Easy right? You’re a turntable God, just like DJ Qbert from the Invisibl Skratch Piklz. Right? Hold on to your hoodie, there’s a bit more to it than that. There are also long paths of arrows that appear on the screen, indicating you’ll need to hold down the correct button and move the platter back and forth to “scratch” the track. Let up off the scratching too soon and you’ll lose the groove, the music will grow a little more

silent, and the club crowd on screen becomes less active. I began my “DJ Hero” career with a little bit of training courtesy of legendary old-school turntablist Grandmaster Flash, who narrates the action throughout. After getting the basics down, I hit the nightclub circuit as the “DJ Kid Itch” character, dressed in a fur-lined jacket with three spray paint cans tucked in the hood for added B-Boy street cred. Along the way through the different club venues and set lists, I would notice a track that I really wanted to hear. But I had to perform well enough to get to it. For instance, in the “On The Wheels Of Steel” set list, I wanted to tackle Fedde Le Grande’s ultimate body mover, “Put Your Hands Up For Detroit.” But I had to muddle through some lackluster Gwen Stefani and Gorrilaz tracks to get to it. This is akin to killing forest rodents in “World of Warcraft” to build up enough power for a decent group raid. The “DJ Hero” controller feels solid and has a decently demanding learning curve. The crossfader was tough to master. Sure, slamming it all the way to the left or right was easy, but quickly getting back to the middle when I needed to was tough. There is also a “euphoria” button that glowed red when I’d done well in a featured segment of a song. At that point, I hit the red button and the crossfader was set to auto, so I could pump one hand in the air and really get the crowd going. Never mind that the club was my living room and the crowd was my dog. A second DJ controller can be added for head-to-head action, or you can connect a “Guitar Hero” axe and do a blend of turntable and guitar gaming. “DJ Hero” is an excellent game. Best music title yet for my taste. Four out of four stars.

Technology

‘Guitar Hero’ playing the blues You can forget about “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” and “New Super Mario Bros. Wii.” I just got my hands on the real cream of the holiday gaming crop. “Bananarama Hero.” Surely that’s the only band left that DOESN’T have a “Guitar Hero”-themed game named after them. All joking aside, it seems like Activision releases one of these games every month now. In the past several months they’ve put out “Guitar Chris Hero: MetalPittman lica,” “Guitar Pushing Buttons Hero 5,” “Guitar Hero: Van Halen,” “Band Hero” and “DJ Hero.” A little much I would say. The series has become a staple in the company’s lineup, but sales are very much on the decline. In fact, the NPD Group reports that sales of all music games are down almost 50 percent when compared to last year’s figures. This doesn’t bode well for Activision’s saturation of the market. “Cruel Summer,” indeed. Music games have traditionally been rather tame sellers. The genre was niche until the original “Guitar Hero” was released. Konami’s “Dance Dance Revolution” had a huge following in Japan. This was mostly due to the arcade scene, which is still quite prevalent there. The game had its share of high-grossing titles on platforms in America, but nothing like the “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” franchises. Activision should take some advice from Konami and cut releases to one or two per year. However, that would only be one of many steps needed to turn this ship around. The user-interface needs a huge overhaul. In my opinion, changes since “Guitar Hero 3” have been almost all negative. The developer, Neversoft, has simply put more time into things outside of the actual gameplay area. They did a good job adding the necessary elements that “Rock

‘Precious’ is great American cinema precious H H H H Rating: R for child abuse including sexual assault, and pervasive language

Running time: 1:49 STARRING: Mo’Nique, Gabourney Sidibe Editor’s Note: Precious opens today in several Atlanta theaters.

By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press

Anne Marie Fox/Associated Press

Mo’Nique is shown in a scene from ‘Precious.’

Comic actress Mo’Nique gets a dramatic role in ‘Precious’ By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

The reviews are so gushy that they’d have to go straight to your head. For the comic actress Mo’Nique, Precious, opening in theaters across the country in November, has become the classic “big break,” that once-in-a-lifetime star turn that changes a career. As Mary, the monstrous mother of the obese, abused and pregnant teen Precious, Mo’Nique is “Medusa-like,” giving “tremendous life to this dead soul,” Anthony Lane wrote in The New Yorker. She is “cruelty incarnate. It’s an astonishingly powerful performance,” Duane Byrge raved in The Hollywood Reporter. It’s “an electrifying, positively Oscar-worthy performance,” Rex Reed declared in The New York Observer. And the phone is ringing for the big, black, sassy-andproud actress born Monique Imes, who became so singular a talent that she’s been able to go by Mo’Nique for her entire professional career. But is she happy about all this? She wouldn’t be Mo’Nique if it was all icing on the cake. “My phone IS ringing, but you know what? They’re not calling me to offer me parts. They’re calling me for AUDITIONS! Me! ‘Come in for a meeting! Come in and audition! Would you READ for us?’ What is up with that? Don’t they believe that’s me up there?” She laughs. “I guess I surprised them too much.” At 41, after years of stand-up comedy, the always-scary Mo’Nique has moved front and center by delivering a horror movie-worthy performance in the middle of an intimate tragedy of poverty and lovelessness. Mo’Nique started her working life as a phone sex opera-

tor, drifted into comedy, and has never looked back. She’d worked with Precious director Lee Daniels, coincidentally playing a character named “Precious,” in his earlier flop Shadowboxer. But when he called this time, “I jumped. Didn’t have to think for a second, because this woman? I know her. And Lee Daniels, he didn’t make me audition!” Her research? “I didn’t have to do research. I was abused by my older brother and my parents didn’t really believe me, either, just like in this movie. I don’t know why. Why would I lie about that? That was all the research I needed. I lived it. “So I know Mary. She’s seen what’s going on, or she’s aware of it. She’s not turning a blind eye. She’s mentally ill. You’re used to people like this being put in an institution. When you’re poor, people like that can be your next door neighbors.” Precious, an indie film that Oprah and Tyler Perry have joined as producers to ensure that the public sees it, that the nation’s critics are embracing, is important, Mo’Nique says. “Because of what it makes us see. Poverty is UGLY. If people respond to this movie, it’s because of what we haven’t let ourselves see this the past few years. People like this are out there among us. These are two overweight, poor black women in Harlem. Would YOU have given them a thought if they weren’t in a movie? Nuh-uh.” Days on this heavy, heavy set in between takes were lightened, she says, with music and dancing and “crab legs and partying. It had to be that way. No way we could live with these characters after work.” She left Precious behind and went back to TV and film comedy, practicing the art she’s mastered, of being comically scary. But being truly frightening? It’s all an act, right? “If I’m scary, baby, it means I got my way, doesn’t it?”

As Hollywood closed specialty divisions that aimed for quality and personal stories, as studios focus more and more on superhero sagas and action blockbusters, cinema fans have rightly wondered, who’s left to make great American movies? For one, the makers of Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, who assembled some of the unlikeliest ingredients — Mariah Carey, Mo’Nique, and a lead actress plucked from an anonymous casting call — to create a wondrous work of art. The film isn’t easy to watch and will test your tolerance for despicable behavior as a long history of physical abuse and incest unfolds involving an illiterate, obese Harlem schoolgirl. Yet Precious — both the film and its grandly resilient title character — will steal your heart. Lee Daniels, in just his second film as director, crafts a story that rises from the depths of despair to a place of genuine hope. When we first encounter her, Precious is pregnant with her second child by her own father, who raped her repeatedly while her mother, Mary (Mo’Nique), looked the other way and later heaped abuse on her daughter out of jealousy and spite. To call Mary a viper would disrespect the other human reptiles that walk among us. She is the lowest of the low, a woman in need of new and nastier adjectives than loathsome and contemptible to do her justice. Mo’Nique, best known for raunchy, low-brow comedy (and who coincidentally played a character named Precious in Daniel’s directing debut, Shadowboxer), embodies Mary perfectly, not as a villain but a woman too ignorant, too unaware to fathom what a horrible person she is. When Mo’Nique’s Mary says she did her best for Precious, you believe that she believes it. Mo’Nique should win an Oscar for this performance. The reverse of Mary is Blu Rain (the radiant Paula Patton), a teacher at an alternative school where Precious finally begins to learn after years of getting good grades while remaining unable to read and write at public school. Blu is chief among the guardian angels that come into Precious’ life. Her benefactors also including Lenny Kravitz as a maternity-ward nurse, Sherri Shepherd as a worker at her new school and a room full of vibrant young women who become more like sisters than classmates to Precious. You could call Precious one of those little miracles of independent film, but you’d be wrong. Precious and all its disparate ingredients constitute one very big miracle — and a glimpse of what American cinema still can be, whether or not Hollywood cares about making good films.

Sykes, Lopez bring new colors to late-night TV By LYNN ELBER Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — In the blink of an eye, late-night TV is shifting from a white men’s club to the start of a rainbow coalition. Wanda Sykes’ weekly Fox comedy show debuts 10 p.m. Saturday, followed by George Lopez’s four-night-a-week talk show on TBS, starting 10 p.m. Monday. They join The Mo’Nique Show on BET. Lopez is counting on an audience hungry for something different — as in the first Hispanic to host a nighttime talk show on a major network, cable or broadcast. Sykes is the first black late-night host since the late 1990s, when celebrities Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Keenan Ivory Wayans tried and failed to follow in Arsenio Hall’s successful 1989-94 footsteps. “There’s a huge percentage of people not watching late-night TV at all,” Lopez said, figuring that the shows headlined by hosts including David Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel draw from roughly the same audience pool. For people of color, the actor and comedian said, “I don’t think a lot of their needs are met with the current talk shows. I would pull a different audience.” Shari Anne Brill, an analyst with media-buyer Carat USA in New York, echoes Lopez’s assertion. “There is a huge, growing multicultural population in this country, and the current late-night fare doesn’t really take them into account,” she said. But neither Lopez nor Sykes are talking about practicing exclusionary TV. Lopez’s ABC sitcom drew a crosssection of viewers, and Sykes said she expects her show to attract the same mixed crowd she gets at her standup appearances. “Young, old, male, female, all races, gay, straight. I love the audience that I draw,” Sykes said. She rebuts the idea she got the job because of her gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation (the actress-comedian, who appears on CBS’ The New Adventures of Old Christine, came out as gay in 2008).

Associated Press file photo

George Lopez hosts the ALMA Awards in Los Angeles on Sept. 17. “I do understand the importance of being on a latenight talk show as a black, gay woman. But I’ve been at this for 20 years. I don’t think they (networks) were saying, ‘Hey, it would be fun to get a black woman on late-night. Who fits that role?’ “I got this show in spite of being a black lesbian,” she said, adding that viewers will tune in to see her or Lopez and not a type. “It’s all driven by the host. It’s not what you’re getting

from a minority, it’s us,” Sykes said. She doesn’t see an “Obama effect” in the sudden latenight diversity, given that she was approached before the election of the first African-American U.S. president. But Lopez said his interest was piqued as he campaigned for the Democratic candidate. “Being with Barack for a year and seeing the people and how their eyes and their faces filled with hope for him, for this country ... and, on a very smaller scale, to have a show that is fun and can galvanize people and bring them together” was appealing, he said. The two shows, as sketched by their hosts, will take different approaches. Lopez promises to bring “the party back to late-night,” signaling a looser, hipper hour in the tradition of The Arsenio Hall Show, said analyst Bill Carroll of media buyer Katz Television in New York. Sykes is planning Bill Mahertype panels with both lighthearted and serious discussion of politics and culture as part of her mix. “In some ways, these shows are looking at breaking the mold,” Carroll said. Lopez Tonight, he suggests, could be “what late-night might look like in the future.” Sykes, whose show replaces Fox’s Mad TV, could compete successfully in her partial overlap with NBC’s Saturday Night Live, analyst Brill said. “Viewers could watch her show and then switch to SNL in time for the news, which is the only part that’s funny anyway.” Eva Longoria-Parker, Ellen DeGeneres and Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Kobe Bryant are the scheduled debut night guests for Lopez. Sykes will welcome Mary Lynn Rajskub of 24, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell of Brothers and The Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan. John Ridley, head writer for Sykes, said he’s wary of asserting that the show will “blow apart” the late-night model. “If you look at all the shows, they’re not different. Are we going to have a monologue? Absolutely. Guests? Yes. A panel? Yes. But it reflects Wanda’s sensibility,” he said. And that, it’s safe to say, is not akin to what Carroll calls the “predominantly middle-aged — to be kind — white men” that have long dominated late-night.

Killers slay audiences with live show experience By JOHN CARUCCI Associated Press

NEW YORK — When the Killers started out, they wanted to raise a ruckus like their favorite rock stars did on the road: Frontman Brandon Flowers heard of the legendary exploits of Led Zeppelin and David Bowie and wanted to emulate those experiences. But Flowers says the Killers’ indulgence in the stereotypical rock star lifestyle is now in the wind. “When we got away from cliches, our shows started really getting better,” Flowers points out. “You become mindful that people are coming to see a band that’s wellrehearsed,” added drummer Ronnie Van-

nucci. “Burning the candle at both ends could hinder performance.” By no means, however, are the Mormon-raised Flowers and the rest of the quartet choirboys. “I think we smartened up and were a little bit more selective of when we were going to go paint the town red,” Flowers says with a smile. Now on their fourth album, the band’s impressive live show is coming to a screen near you. The Killers: Live From The Royal Albert Hall was recorded earlier this year in London at the prestigious 138-year old venue. The CD/DVD set, to be released on Tuesday, also features extra footage, including backstage interviews, and excerpts from their performances at the Oxygen and V

Festivals as well as a Hyde Park concert, also in London. Flowers credits London as the place where their success began. “We wanted to capture that and thank them,” Flowers says. “The energy is different (there). It’s not a part of our culture to celebrate music here the way they do across the Atlantic.” The soft-spoken Flowers is fearless. He commands the stage like a modern-day crooner, except that he fronts a rock band instead of an orchestra, and wears “guyliner” and feather epaulettes on his blazer (at other times, he opts for a gilded suit). Despite the boldness of his stage attire, the Killers lead singer doesn’t see himself as a style icon. “I’m just trying not to look stupid and

apparently some people don’t think I’m doing a very good job,” Flowers says, then breaks into a gentle laugh. They’ve been touring for their latest album, Day & Age, for more than a year, and expect to be on the road for a good part of 2010. Spreading their flamboyant brand of pop around the world is a highlight for the band, but they’re also cognizant of its drawbacks. Vanucci reduces the dilemma to a single word: “Airports.” Then Flowers chimes, “To take off in the sky — not natural. I’d rather be on the bus on the ground.” Immediately, Vannucci interjects, “Somebody’s scared to fly,” before both break out in laughter. That spirit among Killers translates on stage — and that’s where it really matters.

Adam Arkin relishes new ‘Sons of Anarchy’ role By LYNN ELBER

more online

• FX Networks: www.fxnetworks.com

LOS ANGELES — When Adam Arkin signed on for Sons of Anarchy, he didn’t have reservations about his role as a slick white separatist or the FX drama’s dark heart. But he admits to feeling a bit “intimidated” about working with fellow series newcomer Henry Rollins, actor and musician of Black Flag punk-rock fame. “I’m a 50-something square character actor,” Arkin said. “There was every possibility he’d have said, ‘We’ll do our work together, but don’t talk to me. I don’t want to hear any of your bourgeois domestic”’ patter. Instead, Arkin found Rollins to be “incredibly warm” and a colleague who approached his work with discipline. Arkin has equally kind words about Sons of Anarchy and the cast that welcomed him despite his role as a big troublemaker in season two. He’s careful to correct a questioner who refers to the law-breaking motorcycle gang members as the drama’s heroes. “They’re not heroes; they’re the protagonists,” said Arkin, whose wide-ranging TV (Northern Exposure, Chicago Hope) and film career includes the latest Coen brothers release, A Serious Man. He’s also in demand as a director and was interviewed by phone from Dallas, where he was working on a new sitcom. His interpretation of Ethan Zoebelle, his Sons

of Anarchy character, emerged after discussions with series creator Kurt Sutter. Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal (Sutter’s wife) and Ron Perlman star in the Tuesday night show. “We talked about my own ethnicity and the irony of having someone with a Jewish background playing a white separatist, nationalist character,” Arkin said. He also felt that, as written, Zoebelle’s formal manner of speech implied he was Europeanborn, and the actor got Sutter’s OK to play him with a faint accent. “Again, it’s an interesting irony. I felt here was this guy espousing how America had to get back to pure values and yet he himself was not from here,” Arkin said. The idea of tackling a challenging part — and one that goes somewhat against the grain of previous work — was part of the appeal for Arkin. Which is not to say Zoebelle’s views are appealing. “If it (the show) was glorifying white power and separatism ... I wouldn’t be associated with it. But that’s not what the job of this show is, not what I’m trying to do,” he said, a hint of impatience in his voice. “He’s a fascinating character in a compelling story, and that’s what is interesting,” he said.

LOS ANGELES — Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin are taking on the Oscars. The two Hollywood veterans will share hosting duties at the 82nd Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Tuesday. Telecast producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman said Martin and Baldwin are “the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars.” The producers have said they hope to resurrect Oscar’s ratings and make the show more fun by building on the changes introduced at February’s ceremony, which tinkered with the way awards were presented and featured Broadway-style musical interludes. Bringing in a pair of hosts, while not unprecedented, continues that theme of change. “Very early on, we talked about a pairing as part of our concept of baldwin the show, having tradition and also freshness walking hand in hand,” Shankman said in an interview Tuesday. “Steve anchors it in so much tradition and Alec ... besides being a former Oscar nominee, he is just hot, hot, hot right now. And the two of them I know adore each other.” A pair of hosts helmed the inaugural Oscar ceremony in 1929: martin Douglas Fairbanks and William DeMille, then president and vice president of the film academy, co-hosted the show. The last time multiple hosts graced the Oscar stage was in 1987, when Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn and Paul Hogan shared hosting duties. “In the modern television era, this is the first time there will be two co-hosts on the same stage,” academy spokeswoman Leslie Unger said Tuesday. Hugh Jackman sang and danced as host of last year’s Academy Awards, which saw a ratings boost from the previous year. The 41-year-old actor declined to reprise his hosting role before Mechanic and Shankman were named as producers. Splitting hosting duties between two funny fellows ups the show’s fun factor, Mechanic said — “taking a little starch out of the shirts, so to speak.” “We can move things along more easily by taking out some of the stilted banter that goes on between presenters and let the hosts guide us through the evening,” he said Tuesday. Martin has hosted the show twice before, in 2001 and 2003, and has appeared as a presenter several times. Baldwin is a first-timer as Oscar host, but was a co-presenter in 2004. Baldwin, 51, who stars on NBC’s 30 Rock, called the Oscar gig “the opportunity of a lifetime.” He was nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for his supporting role in The Cooler.

‘Family Feud’ gets lift from changes, economy Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Family Feud and host John O’Hurley have upped the ante in the game show’s new season, with a faster-paced opening, a new look and new prizes. But the sour economy has also boosted interest in the syndicated series as it marks its 30th anniversary, said executive producer Gaby Johnston. At packed tryouts held recently in five U.S. cities, families were candid about their need for help with mortgages, college and Christmas expenses and more, even in front of a crowd of other would-be contestants, she said. “They weren’t afraid to tell me. And everybody starting clapping when they said that,” Johnston recalled, adding that the rooms were filled. In Phoenix, for example, more than 1,500 people were on hand. They said potential win-

play begins. Those who win the fast-money round at the show’s conclusion can keep the banked cash. Other changes include a set makeover and video profiles of the competing families, intended to make viewers feel more invested in the contestants, according to the show. A new Wii version of the game was just released. The revisions are a response to the game’s longevity and altered audience habits, Johnston said. Family Feud asks competing families to identify how the public responded to survey questions. “We used to go 10 minutes before the first question was read. Now you’ve got to go (into the contest) within a minute. Viewers change the channel so fast,” she said. But the format is essentially intact, she added: “The audience loves familiarity. If we went too far, people we would think we robbed them.” O’Hurley, in his fourth season as host, welcomed the new elements. “It immediately infuses the show with an energy we were never able to get to before,” he said. “It’s a wonderful way to trigger families to a high-energy approach ... and it’s easier for viewers to get right into the game.” O’Hurley, whose wideranging career includes the role of catalog king Peterman in Seinfeld, King Arthur in the Las Vegas and touring production of Monty Python’s Spamalot and books and albums (Secrets From the Lake is his latest CD), said he’s settled in happily with Feud. He had hosted another game show, To Tell the Truth, but found the celebrity panel did most of the heavy lifting. Family Feud falls on the host’s shoulders, O’Hurley said. “When you get out there, you leap and hope the net will appear .... You have to have your wits about you,” he said.
