Princess Tiana is historic, but for whom? By MEGAN K. SCOTT NEW YORK — Holly Price Alford is over the moon about Disney’s first black princess. Her 8-year-old daughter is, too, but not because the princess is black. “She understands that this is a princess who is AfricanAmerican,” said Alford, who is black and lives in Meadowbrook, Va. “But do I think it’s a big deal to her? No.” Princess Tiana debuts in The Princess and the Frog in New York and Los Angeles on Nov. 25 and nationwide Dec. 11, and grown-ups have certainly been buzzing. But for many little black girls growing up with Malia and Sasha Obama in the White House, the historic nature of Tiana’s debut in Disney’s mostly white princess lineup doesn’t quite seem to register. Girls of all races have already caught princess fever, and young black girls embrace the white stars of Hannah Montana, the Jonas Brothers and High School Musical without worrying about race. But some of their moms are making sure their daughters understand the significance of the princess with her brown doe eyes, fuller lips and elegant tiara. Erica Branch-Ridley, of West Orange, N.J., said her 7- and 11-year-old daughters were excited about a new princess, but the younger one didn’t really understand the importance. “She sees Obama, the first girls, she’s like, ‘that’s nice,”’ said Branch-Ridley, broadband supervising producer for the TV program The Electric Company. Branch-Ridley showed the girls pictures, and her younger daughter now wants to dress up as Tiana for Halloween next year. “I want them to understand how important it is, not only from the perspective of a new Disney movie and a new princess, but how historical it is that we have this,” she said. The movie has not been without controversy — it’s been criticized because the prince is not black and

But little girls are simply excited about the story, said Alford. “She’s another princess,” she said. “In the end, if she gets to kiss the prince, that’s all that matters.” Disney has expanded its princess lineup in recent years to include multicultural princesses Mulan, Pocahontas and Jasmine, but Tiana is the first black princess — and the first princess of any color in more than 10 years. In The Princess and the Frog, which is set in 1920s New Orleans, Tiana is a waitress and chef who dreams of owning a restaurant. She is persuaded to kiss a frog who is really a prince and becomes a frog herself. Tiana has already sparked a merchandising frenzy — beauty products, dolls, a cookbook, a cooking set. There is even a new Tiana wedding dress as part of the “Kirstie Kelly for Disney Fairy Tale Weddings” line. The Halloween costumes sold out quickly in some cities, according to Disney Consumer Products, and the “Just One Kiss” doll was named one of the “Hot Dozen” toys for the holiday season in FunFare Magazine, a toy industry publication. Little girls don’t see color distinctions as much as older girls, said Charlotte Reznick, a child educational psychologist and author of The Power of Your Child’s Imagination. But she said Tiana will register on some level with little black girls and boost their sense of themselves even if it’s subtle. “That warm feeling of ‘just like me’ and feeling like ‘home’ can bring a deep smile (inside and out) to all those little black girls that will watch the movie,” Reznick said in an e-mail. Some black moms, while praising Disney for its efforts, think its influence is overblown. “There is far too much invested in the idea that Disney has somehow affirmed black women and girls with this production,” said Tracy D. Sharpley-Whiting, who teaches African-American and Diaspora Studies at Vanderbilt. Sharpley-Whiting said her 7-year-old already sees herself as a princess, and has watched the live-action version of Cinderella that starred Brandy and Whitney Houston. Still, others said Tiana has made them feel more comfortable letting their daugh-

ters embrace princesses. Dee-Dee Jackson, national president of Mocha Moms Inc., is planning to outfit her 8-year-old daughter’s room with Tiana gear. Disney consulted Mocha Moms on the film. Her daughter has princess costumes, movies and dolls, but she has been reluctant to let her put up images that don’t look like her. “I wanted her to understand that princesses

come in all colors,” said Jackson, a mom of five in Snellville, Ga. Tiana has already made an impression on Tykeisha Crockrell, 8, of Brooklyn, N.Y. She loves princesses — she was Belle from Beauty and the Beast for Halloween. “When I heard that Tiana was going to be an AfricanAmerican princess that made me more proud to be black,” she said. “Tiana is my role model. I want to be like her.”

‘Call of Duty’ sells $310M in 24 hours Associated Press SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Firstday sales of Activision Blizzard Inc.’s “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” broke records, raking in an estimated $310 million in North America and the United Kingdom alone. The video game went on sale all over the world on Tuesday, but Activision provided figures Thursday only for North America and Britain. The company estimates that it sold about 4.7 million copies of the game in the first 24 hours in those markets, making it the biggest-selling launch in the history of entertainment. The latest installment in the “Call of Duty” action franchise was expected to at least match last year’s “Grand Theft Auto IV,” which was the most successful video game release in history and at the time may have been the top entertainment launch ever. That game, from Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., had sold 3.6 million units on its opening day, worth $310 million worldwide. “Call of Duty” made that much in just North America and Britain. John Klein, CNN president, said Thursday that veteran reporter King will move into the 6 p.m. slot that’s been vacated by Lou Dobbs. King will host a show about politics beginning early next year. That puts him in direct competition with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, whose Hardball is also about politics. Fox News Channel’s Shepard Smith, who does a more general interest newscast, dominates the cable news ratings in that hour. Dobbs announced abruptly Wednesday evening that Wednesday would be his last show on CNN. He said he wanted to pursue more advocacy journalism, a route that was no longer available to him on CNN.

Darius Rucker hits country music milestone By CHRIS TALBOTT Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Darius Rucker was just a young boy with a love for Hee Haw and FM radio when he made a discovery — and a decision — that would shape the rest of his life. “When I was 4, I just kind of found these Beatles 45s,” Rucker said. “I think I just said to myself, ‘I’m never going to let anybody tell me what I can listen to.’ And I never did. When I was sitting there watching Hee Haw, my brother didn’t want to watch it. He was older than me but there was going to be a friggin’ fight if they didn’t let me watch Hee Haw.” That mindset has led the singer best known as the frontman of Hootie and the Blowfish to a career renaissance in country music marked by the kind of success no one could have predicted and few other black performers have experienced. Darius Rucker became the second black performer to win a major individual award when he took new artist at Wednesday’s Country Music Association awards, joining Charley Pride, who took entertainer of the year in 1971 and male vocalist in 1971-72. And he has sold more than 1 million copies of his debut country CD, Learn to Live. “You can’t help but smile when someone mentions your name in the same sentence as Charley Pride,” Rucker said. Pride’s was one of the voices in that stewpot of influences that launched Rucker on his eclectic run through the rock and country charts. “You have those memories of Charley Pride coming on Hee Haw and doing his hits,” Rucker said. “When I was 7, you could have Charley Pride and Buck Owens, Stevie Wonder and The Who on the same radio station.” Pride thought he would be the first in a string of black country music singers creating hits, and admits he is puzzled why it took so long for another to break through. (Ray Charles, a CMA Award nominee, sang some country songs and had a strong connection to the genre’s audiences but was never considered a country performer). Pride has introduced fans to others over the years he thought might catch on, but never did. “I don’t know why,” Pride said. “I think you need to go to the industry and ask them about that.” There are only two black performers in the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum — Pride and DeFord Bailey, who was a member of the early Grand Ole Opry cast. Some black singers like Lionel Richie, Solomon Burke, Esther Phillips and Al Green had fleeting success in country music on their way to other destinations, Country Hall of Fame historian Jay Orr said. And relatively recently, performers such as Stoney Edwards, Big Al Downing, Cleve Francis, Rissi Palmer and Cowboy Troy have registered on the country charts. Pride figures he cleared most of the obstacles facing those who followed him. Signed by Chet Atkins in the midst of the civil rights movement, the platinum-voiced Mississippi native has had dozens of

Perhaps his most significant achievement was disproving those who thought country’s heavily Southern audience wouldn’t support black performers at a time when race relations were marked by violence. “I never had even one hoot call from the audience in all these years,” Pride said. “Not one iota of hoot calls. I know it happened to Jackie Robinson when he was in that same kind of position, sort of. I never had to go through nothing like that. Once I started singing they didn’t care.” Rucker’s transition in this era has been seamless, too. The honey-coated baritone’s music outweighs everything else and he’s had three straight No. 1 singles. “It seems clear to me that if I didn’t deliver songs that country music fans wanted to hear, then radio wasn’t going to play them,” Rucker said. No matter the reason, Orr said Pride and Rucker stand alone in terms of album sales by AfricanAmericans. Rucker’s not sure his success will clear the way for other black performers to mine country music for hits. But he hopes it has opened some minds. “I don’t know if I proved it can work,” he said. “But maybe someone will give a second listen now instead of just saying no.”

David Cook is part of an exclusive club — one that comes with 30 million potential fans and alums such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. He’s an American Idol winner and there are only seven others like him. Cook has fared pretty well to this point in his post-Idol career. His self-titled album sold more than a million copies, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard charts and producing the hit singles “Lights On” and “Come Back to Me.” Cook followed the album release with an ambitious touring schedule that’s had him and his band on the road since February. We caught up with him on the phone before a recent concert in El Paso, Texas, and talked about American Idol pressures, his touring habits and what he’s got coming up next. Q: American Idol winners seem to either do really well, or just fizzle away. Did you feel pressure to be more like Carrie Underwood and less like Taylor Hicks? A: Yeah, but I think it was an internal pressure. I set the bar pretty high for myself. I want to be right up there with Carrie, people like her and Kelly and Daughtry. They’ve managed to make tremendous careers for themselves. Q: How important is it to forge your own identity outside of Idol? Do you feel like you’ve done a good job of it? A: I think one of the things that makes Idol work is that people tune in to see growth. They don’t want to see a finished product. Coming out of there, I wanted to continue to progress and have them come along with me. I always look to progress. Q: Some Idol contestants have done well for themselves without actually winning the whole thing. Now that you’re a year detached, do you feel like being the ultimate winner made a big difference for you? Or would you have done just as well if you were No. 2? A: I’m the last to know, really. Everybody that’s done well has come out with good records and had people in their corner pushing their record. They’ve come out and done the grunt work. That’s the angle we took. Q: You’ve been on the road pretty much all year. What’s tougher: Being on the road for nine months straight or winning American Idol? A: I’d much rather be on the road. The Idol experience was great. It gave me a platform, but there is something a little unnerving about going on stage once a week and singing for your life in front of 30 million people. Q: What do you do to pass the time on the road? A: I’ve actually gotten into video games. I’m playing “MLB 2009.”

“Livin’ On A Prayer II,” from the foundation bass riff that’s almost identical to that of Bon Jovi’s biggest-ever hit, to the dignified struggle of the little guy against tremendous odds. (At least they didn’t bring back Tommy and Gina again.) “Bullet” has a little of the “Hey God” anger and angst, asking the Almighty if he has “just given up” in the face of so much evil in the world. A rejuvenated Richie Sambora makes his presence known here more strongly than on his last few albums, with more intricate and longer solos. Throughout it all, “Hell yeah!” has replaced “Hee Haw.” And as they say in New Jersey, that’s a good thing, capece? CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: “When We Were Beautiful” is about trying to regain lost innocence and simplicity. Melanie Fiona may be eccentric. Or maybe she’s just madly in love. Either way, her debut CD is an impressive mix of tracks that presents the many sides of the woman. The Bridge finds the 26-year-old newcomer begging her man to stay put on the uptempo “Please Don’t Go (Cry Baby),” leaving her lover behind on the impeccable “Monday Morning,” and demanding her partner treat her the right way between the sheets on the groovy first single, “Give It to Me Right.” Though eight of the 12 tracks use samples — Fiona borrows from The Zombies, Martha & the Vandellas, the Rhine Oaks, Johnnie Taylor, Janet Kay and the Softones — she proves she can hold her own on the songs that don’t use interpolations. “Bang, Bang” is an exceptional jam, as is “Johnny,” a danceable, old school-

sounding love song that finds Fiona kicked to the curb, senselessly walking around singing: “Johnny, the least you could have done was drive me home.” Fiona, like newcomer Anjulie, has provided one of the best debut albums this year. The two are also Canadianraised, Guyanese-bred singers. Must be something in the water. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Fiona’s husky, but soothing voice is top-notch on the drum-filled “You Stop My Heart.” The passionate tune may stop your heart, too. — Mesfin Fekadu, Associated Press

Dashboard Confessional has always tried to combine raw emotion and pop melodies, but on Alter the Ending (DGC), the balance is so right that both sides seem stronger than ever. Chris Carrabba twists brainy lyrics into a classic rock melody for “The Motions.” He turns “Everybody Learns from Disaster” — made more poignant by his coping with his sister’s injuries from a car accident while

recording the album — into an anthemic road-trip rocker, while the ballad “Belle of the Boulevard” couldn’t be lovelier. Carrabba has finally built an incredibly happy Ending. — Glenn Gamboa, Newsday

The plethora of internationally successful Swedish pop music acts over the years may tempt one to perceive a signature sound, a discernible influence — a result of mood, place, etc. But c’mon: Can anyone really spot the ABBA influence on Led Zeppelin’s “In Through the Out Door,” their 1979 swan song LP recorded at the Swedish hitmakers’ Polar Studios in Stockholm? You might think she’s a “Gothenburg Calling” alternative, hailing from Sweden’s second city, a big college town and music hotbed. But her beautifully brooding, deceptively lively indie pop is gorgeously borderless. Her third album is a slight departure, more beat-pushed (even including clubby remixes), developed with studio whiz Rasmus Hagg. It’s also darker, if sparkling in its meditations on lost love, with EPDM’s measured, ethereal and unmistakable voice conveying the sadness of a “Change of Heart” or moving on to “A Better Love.” —David R. Songs on Lovett’s new album feel out of place Lyle Lovett Natural Forces

This is Lyle Lovett without his Large Band. On Natural Forces, the lanky Texan with the crooked grin leads a small ensemble and focuses on his folk-country side. His title song is a finely etched portrait of a loner cowboy, but mostly Lovett uses the album to showcase the work of fellow Lone Star troubadours: He gives sympathetic readings of songs by Townes Van Zandt,

David Ball, Eric Taylor and others. Lovett does show his lighter side, cutting loose with the risque swing of “Farmer Brown/Chicken Reel” and the honky-tonk wordplay of “Pantry,” and “It’s Rock and Roll” is just that. Given the somber, slow-paced ambience that predominates, however, these bright, up-tempo performances seem out of place, giving the album a bit of a disjointed feel. — Nick Cristiano, MCT

The fiddles and banjos have been packed away and the steel guitars, presumably, stolen. In their place are angry electric guitars, catchy choruses that demand to be shouted out in a football stadium, and a return to the unflappable optimism that has made these Jersey guys legends in the rock biz. In short, Bon Jovi is back! The Circle is the followup to 2007’s wildly successful but country-fried Lost Highway, which was a jarring sonic detour for the heroes of the New Jersey Turnpike. Thankfully, Jon Bon Jovi & Co. are keeping the faith with the stilldeveloping but oh-so-recognizable sound that has been the band’s trademark. “We Weren’t Born To Follow,” the fist-pumping anthem that kicks off the disc, could have been right at home on “Slippery When Wet” or “New Jersey,” with its timeless hooks and punchy beat. They really do come full circle on “Work For The Working Man,” which just as easily could have been titled

Cataclysmic disaster and apocalyptic doom, as foretold by Hollywood, have a way of bringing together broken families, revealing the unseen heroism of deadbeat dads and neatly disposing of their rivals. This, too, is the micro-level drama of 2012, the latest nihilistic disaster flick to revel in the destruction of the planet. John Cusack plays the castoff father (Jackson Curtis), a failed novelist getting by as a limo driver. We greet him as he rolls out of bed, spilling his copy of Moby Dick as he rushes out the door, disheveled and late for a camping trip with his kids. His ex-wife, Kate (Amanda Peet), has shacked up with a plastic surgeon named Gordon Silberman (Tom McCarthy) who drives a Porsche, an obvious clue that we’re not meant to like him. When the apocalypse comes, Gordon, for a time, proves quite useful as an amateur pilot. But it’s no spoiler to say Gordon is not long for this world — after all, he stands in the way of Jackson’s redemption. The Curtis family may be our ground-level protagonists in 2012, but the ground is shifting. Due to explosions on the sun, neutrinos (that old action movie villain) are heating up the earth’s core and will soon destabilize the planet’s crust, birthing volcanoes and shifting tectonics. Hip to this development is government scientist Adrian Helmsley, played by the exceptional Chiwetel Ejiofor, whose gravity — best seen in 2002’s Dirty Pretty Things — elevates 2012. He alerts the president’s chief of staff, Carl Anheuser (Oliver Platt), who quickly brings Helmsley to the president (Danny Glover, apparently filling in for Morgan Freeman).

The government secretly establishes what Anheuser calls “the most important timetable in the history of mankind” — a schedule for the most important and most wealthy to be evacuated in confidential arks. Curtis catches wind of the conspiracy theories of a loony radio DJ (Woody Harrelson, perfectly cast to type). Thus, he and his family are just moments ahead of the collapse of Los Angeles. A number of close scrapes follow, as Curtis narrowly steers them through volcanic explosions, earthquakes and, at one point, a subway that somehow soars above their airplane. California falls into the ocean and much of the world follows suit. As the destruction of 2012 spirals around the globe, one can’t help a quaking feeling watching the mayhem — especially in a theater cackling at its absurd cheesiness. Do we think so little of the world we’ve made that we can’t resist the impulse to wreck it, ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the flames? After the deaths of billions, interest in the fates of the Curtis family becomes laughable. Their narrow, sometimes belabored escapes carry less and less emotion — the audience knows they, themselves, are among the imagined dead. There is, for some reason, much made of Curtis’ book, Farewell Atlantis, which is held up as a classic for the post-apocalypitic generation. (We will spare you an excerpt.) Helmsley and the president’s daughter (an underused Thandie Newton) also make a rousing stand for a handful of stranded passengers even once most of the planet is destroyed. The most grounded thing here is the acting — Cusack, Ejiofor, Platt, McCarthy and Harrelson are all better than But instead it’s just another doomsday film, with new digital effects and stock scenes patched together from Jaws, The Poseidon Adventure and Armageddon. And a long one at that. For too much of the 2 1/2hour 2012, the end is not near.

Richard Curtis makes romantic, sentimental and overlong comedies filled to the rafters with friends as cast-members. He’s a British Judd Apatow — indulgent, substituting sweetness for edge, charm for shock value. His latest, Pirate Radio, is as jolly, jaunty and sappy as Love Actually. It was cut by over half an hour for American release and still plays long. But thanks to that fairydusting of Curtis charm, I wouldn’t cut a frame of it. It skips by like a much-loved old LP. It’s about the heyday of offshore “pirate radio” stations — broadcasting from old merchant ships to a Britain dying to hear the Golden Age of British pop, but denied it by the staid BBC. Curtis (Blackadder, Four Weddings and a Funeral) fills the good ship Radio Rock with his usual dizzy cast of castaways — the owner-operator is the dapper and vulpine Quentin (Bill Nighy, naturally). The star DJ is a Yank, The Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who is only too happy to be the first to say the F-word on British airwaves. Then there’s Midnight Mark, a Jim Morrison wannabe (Tom Wisdom), Bob the Dawn Treader, Thick Kevin and Big Bad Dave (Nick Frost). The return of the legendary Gorgeous Gavin (Rhys Ifans) creates friction as he steals The Count’s thunder and another DJ’s woman. It’s 1966, and they’re all stuck on a rusty red hulk in the North Sea, where they live, sleep, drink and kick out the jams. Young and virginal Carl (Tom Sturridge) joins up after being kicked out of school. “Virginal” drives his shipmates mad as they scheme of ways to “fix” that. Also scheming is Sir Alistair (Kenneth Branagh), an absurdly priggish government minister who fumes about ways to “shut that filth off.” Curtis runs women to and from the ship — giving sexy scenes to Gemma Arterton and Emma Thompson. January Jones of Mad Men plays a woman who marries a DJ, and the pop-loving/wedding loving Curtis treats us to the DJs serenading the lovely Elenore with the (1968) pop song of the same name — “You’re my pride and joy, et cetera!”

The latest mock-documentary satire from comic provocateur Sacha Baron Cohen was mostly a misfire. Taken from Cohen’s TV program Da Ali G Show, Bruno is a gay, Austrian host of a fashion show. As the film opens, he makes a mess of a runway and is “schwartzlisted” from the industry. He attempts a comeback by going to Hollywood and, eventually, the Middle East and American South. Whether it’s a painful episode involving Bruno trying to trap presidential candidate Ron Paul into making a sex tape or trying to broker Arab-Israeli peace or his encounters with gay “converters” in Alabama, the skits here don’t add up to anything substantive. Cohen’s targets are too easy and his raunchy, puerile stunts are just that, nothing more. Contains pervasive, strong and crude sexual content, graphic nudity and profanity.

Small-town theater groups are more like a family than anything else. The players are usually the same from one production to the next, and they see each other for hours every night for days on end. They have inside jokes, and they have drama. Lots of drama. This is the setting for Community Actors’ Studio Theater’s latest production, Moon Over Buffalo, a farce about a 1950s repertory theater group. The play is written by Ken Ludwig, the same man who wrote Leading Ladies, another farce about two cross-dressing Shakespearean actors, which CAST performed last season. Comedies are a favorite for Ludwig

— in fact, that’s all he’s written. “It’s an area of theater that I love,” Ludwig said recently in a phone interview from his home in Washington, D.C. “It’s sort of a continuum of comedy. It stretches back to Shakespeare to Kaufman and Hart and the screwball comedies of the ’30s with Cary Grant.” Moon Over Buffalo centers around George and Charlotte Hay, fading stars who spend their days performing Private Lives and Cyrano de Bergerac in a repertory theater in Buffalo, N.Y. Just when they are on the verge of divorce — caused by George’s affair with a younger actress in the group — they receive word that Frank Capra (the real-life director of You Can’t Take It With You, It’s a Wonderful Life and many other movies) is coming to see their matinee

performance. If he likes the actors, he may cast George and Charlotte in his latest film, a remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel. And in typical farce fashion, everything that can go wrong does. Moon Over Buffalo is full of situational and slapstick comedy, which seems to be a specialty of Ludwig’s. “Actors love physical comedies because they get to be bigger than life,” he said. “If you’re an actor, there’s nothing better than digging into a big comedy role. It’s great to hear the audience respond. It’s great to hear the laughs roll in over the footlights.” Ludwig also specializes in smalltown settings. Leading Ladies is set in his hometown of York, Penn. Lend Me a Tenor, which was the winner of two Tony awards and the Olivier Comedy

of the Year award, is set in Cleveland, Ohio. “What I love to write about is people in these small towns,” Ludwig said. “It really speaks to what America is all about ... where ordinary people live.” Moon Over Buffalo runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 8 and Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 through Nov. 22 at the JSU/McClellan Theatre. And it is so accessible that everyone, young and old, can understand it.” This will be Murphy’s third time to direct the one-act opera, although she thinks of it as a musical. It will be her first time to direct it for a church group and everything seemed to work together from the start to make it successful, she said.

“In relocating my church music library this summer I came across my college score of Amahl,” she said. “When I evaluated the characters in it again, I thought ‘I can do this!’ And sure enough, the required people in the church and the community were right here.” Thus she is getting to direct this “opera for every man,” as her notes describe Amahl, one more time in her career. became well-known on the American scene as the first to create American opera possessing such appeal that it became a part of the permanent musical repertoire. He is known for both his Italian gift for drama and his grasp of the communicative power and poetry of the English language. In 1958 he organized the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, and in 1977 he launched the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, S.C., as its counterpart. Accompanied by pianists Murphy and Susie Francis Dempsey, the cast members are Kimberlee Inmon Taylor as the Mother, who envies the kings’ riches; Caleb LaFollette portrays the lovable Amahl; Michael Ervin plays the slightly deaf King Kaspar; King Melchior, who gives his music dignity and serenity, is represented by Cody Harrell; Jason Wright is the slightly dotty King Balthazar; and the Page, who travels with the kings, is played by Scott Whitney. Arias and dancing are highlights of the musical. Since this is 11-year-old LaFollette’s first theater experience, it has been a time of learning and independence, according to his mother, April. “He’s had 55 pages of music to learn,” she said, and sees the fruits and spices the kings have to offer up close. It has made the Bible account of the Magi come completely alive for him. And the clarity and range of the voices is incredible,” she added. “Amahl brings out the child in us all.” Performances are Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. There is no admission charge.

All the ingredients in its staging and singing by this particular cast should make the musical a precious gift indeed. Written by Gian Carlo Menotti, Amahl is the story of a disabled shepherd boy whose life is changed by a visit from the Magi as they follow the star of Bethlehem. Written originally for a NBC TV presentation on Christmas Eve, 1951, it ranks with Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol as television’s most frequently produced musical tale, according to texts. The composer was commissioned to write the opera and it brought high praise from critics and audiences alike. In directing Amahl, Murphy is giving viewers something of her own life’s experience and taste in choral music.

Marvelous: Super-hero sequel packs some punch

I have to cop to being a little underwhelmed by the first “Marvel Ultimate Alliance.” And, important caveat here, I’m not a big fan of Marvel superheroes. Aside from Spiderman and Wolverine, there aren’t too many I can really identify with; Spiderman because he’s a smart aleck and Wolverine because Dan I, too, have Whisenhunt Pushing Buttons indestructible metal claws. “Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2” gives us a fine buffet of marvel’s finest, with players working in four-person teams to complete missions. The characterization is a touch generic. All superheroes make witty quips, often related to their powers. You know who we haven’t heard enough from? Socially Awkward Man, also known as The Hulk. Nick Fury, a government spy, launches one of his wacky schemes and sets off an international incident. The government, in typical fashion, overreacts to a few hundred of its citizens running around with lifethreatening powers and implements a superhero registration act. Under the law, superheroes must register as weapons of mass destruction and become government agents. (One of the strengths of the Marvel line is the constant social commentary. Too bad this game is a few years too late to be relevant. Or is it?) I’ll dispense with the basics. Graphics? Top notch. Story line? Old, but a lot better than the old super-villain-trying-to-blow-up-a-major-city routine. The combat mechanics may work for hack-n-slash players, but I’m a real stickler for combat that makes sense. Too often here I find myself mashing buttons, setting off a few power moves, then mashing some more buttons. There are a few puzzles to solve in between, but in general the mechanics are unimagi-

native. That’s the price you pay for working in multiple beloved characters; I’d much rather see a game with a more up-close view focused on a few characters and their role in the scheme of things. Overall, a solid game. I’d give it three and one-half buttons out of five. It’s just this side of decent, but not something I just have to have in my collection. Unless I’m a Marvel fan, that is.

‘Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2’ At last, my day has come. For all of you regular followers of this column (what is it, five now?) you know “Call of Duty Modern Warfare” is something of an obsession. On Tuesday the sequel “dropped,” in the parlance of our times, and I was standing in line at the Anniston Wal-Mart at midnight for my copy. I called in advance. Was there a line? “No,” the clerk said. When I got there at midnight, a line had formed. Ten anxious minutes later, my friend Kevin and I had our copy. We also received a free energy-shot drink for our late-night “Call of Duty”-fest. I wondered about the users who’d imbibed that energy drink as soon as they got home, because like most PlayStation games, playing “Call of Duty” requires a software download. It’s not an eternal download, but it’s still annoying. After two hours of play, I got kicked off by the PlayStation network and couldn’t get back on. If I’d had the monster energy drink in my system, I’d have torn my hair out. Oh, I can always play the campaign mode, which doesn’t require an Internet connection, but I wasn’t about to do that. I’m sure it’s a perfectly fine story and I’ll get to it. I just wanted to get online and start puttin’ it on ‘em. What do I think? Let me not answer that yet. The feelings that I can’t express fill me with such happiness. Suffice it to say I’m glad it’s here. And I’ll have more to say on it next week.

Once a year, Jacksonville State University’s art faculty puts its work on display at Hammond Hall gallery on campus. In honor of this year’s show, we’ve asked some of the faculty to tell us about themselves and what they’ve learned from their students over the years. Name: Diana Cadwallader Area of teaching: Graphic Design, foundation Years at JSU: 15 Favorite piece (of your own) on exhibit: No favorite What have you learned from your students and how has that influenced your art: Fresh eyes Name: Sarah Cusimano Miles Area of teaching: Photography Years at JSU: Three Favorite piece (of your own) in exhibit: Triple Negative What have you learned from your students and how has that influenced your art: I have learned to be on my toes, because they will let me know if I am not. If I want to keep them interested, I need to be interesting. If I want them to share their thoughts and ideas, I have to be open to them. If I want them to be prepared, I need to let them know how to prepare. If I want them to take from the class that which I think is important, I need to let them know why it has value to them. These lessons have filtered into my own work in that as an artist one must know one’s audience in order to evoke the desired response. Every class period is a holistic lesson for me in the psychology of communication. They teach me that which is at the core of what I attempt to accomplish — to express ideas so that others are inspired to think. And I adopted it as my personal philosophy, too. That was many years ago and it still applies in my life. Students also teach me new processes in the studio — as a result of their experimentation. I’ve learned to make use of some common, everyday household objects in the studio — things I still use and pass on to others now. Simple, inexpensive things like wax paper, Press It (Saran-type) wrap, and rubbery shelf liner all have great alternative uses in the classroom. Name: Doug Clark Area of teaching: Photography and Digital Imaging Years at JSU: Five Favorite piece (of your own) on exhibit: “Green Valley Series: At the Fence.” I took these images at Green Valley Speedway nearby in Glencoe. I feel this image captures the essence of being at the track during a Friday night race. What have you learned from your students and how has that influenced your art: As a teacher I am a lifelong student as well. In the classroom I share ideas with my students and they share theirs with me. I continue to learn new ways of seeing through conversations with students. Each of us has a unique perspective. In a studio class we have critiques of all of the work that is produced. With this continual dialogue everyone in the class has the opportunity to learn from each other. These new perspectives I gain through the classroom broaden my point of view. Because my work is an extension of my perspective it to continues to be influenced by everything around me. Name: Ron Baker Years at JSU: Six Favorite piece (of your own) on exhibit: Lady of Shalott. Trying to make an 800-year-old legend about an enchanted Lady from King Arthur’s court come alive was a fun challenge. The payoff is hoping someone can feel the mysterious and sad beauty of the Lady. What have you learned from your students and how has that influenced your art: Making art creates its own energy. So, being around students who are constantly creating keeps the instructor’s battery charged. We, as teachers, sometimes think we’ve seen it all. Then a student comes up with such a unique solution we are reminded that in art there are a million doors that can be opened from just one question. The students are a reminder that, as artists, we are in a constant state of discovery.

NEW YORK — A man named Michael from New York wakes up in the desert, much to his surprise. Fortunately, a pleasant-looking village is nearby. Unfortunately, Michael wants to get back to New York and finds he can’t. “That’s not possible,” the Village elder tells him. “There is no New York. There’s only the Village.” “I want out!” Michael says. “There is no out,” insists the leader. “There is only in.” So goes The Prisoner, a brilliant sixhour, three-night reimagining of the 1960s classic. It airs Sunday through Tuesday at 7 p.m. on AMC. The Prisoner is a sometimes startling, always eye-popping meditation on freedom through the prism of mass thought control. Jim Caviezel stars as Michael, the addled detainee who finds that, on his arrival in the Village, he, like all the residents, is designated by a number, not a name. He is now Six. Ian McKellen is the charismatic, delicately despotic boss, Two. With a suave, creepy-reassuring manner, he lords over this realm with its daunting sinkholes, huge white beach ball and compliant, seemingly contented populace. Here wanderlust is out of the question, the solution to every problem is “More Village” and every home has a pig to somehow guarantee stability. What’s it all mean? That’s up to each viewer, and it’s fun (and mindexpanding) to surrender to the Village’s enigmas and find out. “He’s running the Village with the best of motives,” declares McKellen, speaking of his character, Two. But Two embodies, among other things, the drawbacks of capitalism, McKellen says. “Capitalism offers you freedom, but far from giving people freedom, it enslaves them,” he says. “That’s part of the show’s message.” At 70, the British-born Sir Ian (who was knighted in 1991) is deemed one of the greatest actors working today. He has triumphed with Shakespeare in his long stage career, while his many films include The Da Vinci Code, the X-Men adventures and the Lord of the Rings trilogy (and, ahead for him, a pair of Hobbit films back in his role as Gandalf ). McKellen says he chooses a project based on whether it is something he would like to see himself. Another consideration: Can he learn anything from doing the role?

He accepted The Prisoner, he says, because screenwriter Bill Gallagher (British TV’s Lark Rise to Candleford, Conviction) “wasn’t writing a fantasy, he was writing science fiction — something that might indeed happen, NOT something that could never happen. “But I had decided I wanted to do this before I read the final episode,” which mercifully clears up much of the mystery. “Once I found all the questions,” says McKellen, “I just took it on trust that Bill would come up with some good answers.” McKellen says he saw only enough “to get a flavor” of the original Prisoner series, which starred Patrick McGoohan as Six while shuttling numerous actors through the role of Two. Filming took place in Capetown, South Africa, and in Swakopmund, a town on the Atlantic coast of Namibia. Hayley Atwell, Ruth Wilson, Lennie James, Rachael Blake and Jamie Campbell Bower also star. Asked how difficult he found the role of Two, McKellen says, “I don’t think I’ve ever played a part that I haven’t really, really worried about,

and thought, ’I shouldn’t be doing this.’ I’m never confident. But, perversely, I’ll only do a part if I think I can’t do it, because that will get the best out of me.” It was in Swakopmund where McKellen found a tailor who, furnishing Two’s signature white suit, helped him get into character. That costume, says McKellen, “became my favorite,” but he cautions that the suit’s on-screen spiffiness is oddly missing off-camera. “In life, if you saw it you wouldn’t want to wear it.” Now, as he speaks with a reporter in a New York hotel suite, McKellen is fashionably rumpled in a dark striped jacket, vest, open-collar shirt and jeans. On his feet are a pair of rubber Calzuro clogs, a version of which he was issued with his prison costume as Magneto in X-Men and has worn ever since. Charming and witty, he slouches back on the couch in thought when asked how performing any other part (Magneto? Gandalf? Two?) can possibly compare to a Shakespearean role. “That’s what Jude Law said to me,”

says McKellen, who has just seen Law on Broadway. “’What am I going to do after Hamlet? Everything is going to seem third-rate.’ Well, it’s true — it is,” McKellen sums up with a laugh. “Because Shakespeare is FIRST-rate.” But then, referring to every other dramatist, he adds, “You can look for the good intentions, I suppose, with the understanding that even halfway up a mountain, the view can be pretty good.” Regular ascents to the summit with Shakespeare have certified McKellen’s lofty stature. But he suggests his reputation is somewhat by default. “If you’re associated with great pieces, some of that luster rubs off on you. Besides, there are not that many great actors around. Olivier, Gielgud, Scofield, Guinness” — now all passed from the scene — “are major, major performers, and you can tell I sort of modeled my career on them, because I like the sort of things that they liked. “But that’s not to say I’m up there with them.” Whereupon, with perfect timing, his voice drops to a stage whisper: “But don’t tell anybody.”

not overly protective of my character. I allow him to be (a jerk) every once in a while because that’s what makes him more interesting — because he has all these flaws. A lot of people are like, ’My character wouldn’t do that.’ My character, on the other hand, would do that. He’s very eccentric.
