Stephen J. Williams as Rafe, Heather Williams as Angela, Adam Fulmer as the Conquistador in JSU’s production of ‘Conquistadors.’

‘Conquistadors’ mixes fantasy, history By Deirdre Long dlong@annistonstar.com

The Jacksonville State University drama department’s latest production hits close to home — closer than most of the plays it performs, at least. Conquistadors is the winner of JSU’s 2009 Southern Playwrights Competition. The play, written by Barry Bradford of Hammond, La., takes place in the small town of Jackson, located in southwest Alabama. Through fact and fantasy, the play illustrates the hopes, passions and frustrations of Will, a graduate student who discovers parallels between Hernando De Soto’s exploration of Alabama in the 16th century and his own exploration of his personal relationships. “It really fills the bill as to what the contest is all about,” said Dr. Wayne Claeren, director of Conquistadors and one of the judges of the competition. As opposed to past winners, “this play is more directly about these parts.” Conquistadors is the second of Bradford’s plays to win the competition. His play Was won in 2005. The play is a little more risqué than others in JSU’s history — it has sex, violence and crude language — but it is not unwarranted. And it’s nothing more than you would see on

television or the movies, Claeren said. “It’s not there for any shock value or gratuitous value,” he said. “It grows out of the personalities of the characters.” The play has a fist fight, one of the characters is shot, there’s an onstage show of some rough sexual foreplay, and cursing isn’t uncommon throughout. But all this makes the script more realistic, Claeren said. For the last few years, the winning plays of the competition have been used in the spring as one of the final shows of the season. But Conquistadors was so compelling they decided to go ahead and perform it this fall. “We just really thought so much of this play … they wanted to do it at the beginning of the season,” Claeren said. “Because it’s such a good play and it’s about Alabama and its history, I think that people who see it will want to tell others about it.” The play begins tonight and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Ernest Stone Performing Arts Center on the corner of Church Avenue and 11th Street in Jacksonville. Because of the strong adult language, violence and sexual situations, Conquistadors is not recommended for children under 13. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and JSU personnel and $5 for students and military. For reservations, call 782-5648.

It’s a curious irony that at a time when entire music collections can be shrunk down to the size of a couple of sticks of gum, certain music packages keep getting larger. Hot on the heels of the much-celebrated remastered Beatles sets, Sony Legacy is releasing Miles Davis: The Complete Columbia Album Collection, a beautiful but somewhat daunting stockpile of 52 albums on more than 70 CDs spanning four decades in the jazz trumpeter’s storied and fiercely unpredictable career. With each album bound in mini-LP sleeves and packed into a dense brick of music slightly smaller than a shoebox, this set is the mother lode for Miles Davis completists. Although most of Davis’ works already have been reissued — the iconic Kind of Blue, for instance, was released in a lush anniversary package last year — this marks the first occasion that crisply remastered editions of titles such as the mind-bending doublealbum live recordings Agharta and Pangaea have been available in the U.S. It includes extras such as numerous new and previously issued bonus tracks, the first full release of a recording of Davis’ fiery

1970 performance from the Isle of Wight (issued years ago on a compilation as the abbreviated medley “Call It Anythin’ ”) and the DVD debut of two freewheeling European concerts by Davis’ stellar 1967 band featuring Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, Ron Carter and Herbie Hancock that in recent years had been available only on YouTube. The set affords listeners a welcome opportunity to explore intriguing but lesscelebrated albums such as Miles in Tokyo, featuring Davis’ brief pairing with avant-garde saxophonist Sam Rivers in 1964, and the ahead-of-its-time ambientfunk explorations of 1972’s “On the Corner.” But it also includes some of the trumpeter’s uneven later works. For instance, it’s tough to imagine the sort of devout fan who would invest the money this set demands treating Davis’ pedestrian, notefor-note cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” from 1985’s “You’re Under Arrest” as much more than a puzzling novelty. Much like the Beatles sets, there are a few catches. Apart from the Paris exhibition, the collection is available exclusively through Amazon starting Nov. 24 (listed for $364.98 but discounted to $328.48) and only in its physical form — no downloads.

A scene from ‘Call of Duty.’

Answering the call (of duty)

It’s been awhile. For most of 2007 I was a little “Call of Duty Modern Warfare” crack-fiend. A couple of things happened since then that curbed my enthusiasm for this great game. My friend and fellow Call-of-Duty player had his PlayStation 3 stolen. I had no one to play with because my brother had since moved on to “Call of Dan Duty: World at War.” I Whisenhunt was not a huge fan of Pushing Buttons that game, which went back to the series’ World War II roots. Like all great games, “Modern Warfare” had simply lost its luster. It took a lot longer than most. Not to mention there was no way in hell I could ever compete with the millions who played it online every day and achieved astounding rankings. Does its sequel, “Modern Warfare 2” recapture the game’s glory and give me something new to be excited about? Affirmative. But because this is such a complex game that appeals to different kinds of players, I’ve limited this review to the multiplayer function, which, arguably, is the best in modern gaming at the moment. One of the reasons “MW2’s” multiplayer dominates the rest is the ease with which players can join games and the game’s preference to match players based on rank. Now rank isn’t anything but a number when you’re dealing

with more experienced players. This time developers Infinity Ward threw unskilled players a few bones that even the playing field. Like the last game, players can create custom classes with specific weapons, equipment and abilities, known as perks. The perks are a little different this time around, as are the weapon attachments. Gone is the “overkill” perk that allowed players in the first “MW” to carry two primary weapons. Now the primary and secondary weapons are evenly divided, with secondary offering a range of gun choices beyond the pistol. Secondary weapons can include automatic machine pistols and shotguns. What has replaced this feature is a perk called “bling,” which allows players to have two gun attachments — like, say, a scope and a grenade launcher on your primary weapon. The perks themselves are a little different this time, as well. You start out with basic perks, including some new ones. My personal favorite of these so far is “scavenger,” which allows you to pick up ammo and equipment off dead players. In addition, using these perks enough times will unlock “pro” perks, i.e. “scavenger pro,” which allows you to pick up extra ammo as well. There are also differences in what kill streaks will do for you. Now you can unlock certain abilities that come into play after a kill streak. You could summon a chopper, set up a stationary gun, call

in radar and a myriad of other fun bonuses. If you get a perk called “hardline,” it gives you these bonuses with fewer kills. Hardline pro requires one less death for a “death streak,” which is a bonus unlocked if you die a certain number of times. This is part of the Infinity Ward balancing act with the new game. Using the “copycat” feature, for example, allows you to take on the perks, weapons and attachments of the enemy that killed you after you die four times. One kill streak I’m not too sure about is tactical nuke. After 25 consecutive kills, a player can drop a tactical nuke killing every player on the board and ending the match. While this will certainly end some of the more tedious matches, I’m not so sure a stricter time-limit wouldn’t have done the same thing. This is the ultimate trump card for more experienced players. Also, a short personal aside, I’m not sure I like the idea of any game where nuclear weapons are casually tossed around. But that’s just me. So that’s the basic changes of the multi-player. I’m tentatively giving the multiplayer aspect five buttons out of five, but I’m honestly not through with it yet and this is a game that you really need to play through to enjoy the full experience. I may find more components that I like more or less as time goes on. But rest assured, this is not my last word on “MW2.”

NEW YORK — After a slight reprieve in September, U.S. video game retail sales slumped again in October, unable to escape the economic turmoil that’s cutting into consumer spending and swelling the ranks of unemployed. Market researcher NPD Group said Nov. 12 total sales of video game hardware, software and accessories fell 19 percent in October from the same month last year, to $1.07 billion. Year-to-date sales were down 13 percent at $11.43 billion. It is unlikely that the industry will be able to match last year’s record sales, which topped $21 billion. But for a business that makes most of its money during the holidays, things may not be as bleak as they seem. Industry analysts expect November sales to pick up again. “Based on typical industry seasonality, the industry is on track to generate full-year revenues in the range of ($20 billion to $21 billion) in the U.S., which would put it just a bit below last year’s sales,” said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. Not included in the October sales figures is Activision Blizzard Inc.’s “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2,” which went on sale Nov. 10 and broke entertainment records on its first day in stores. According to its publisher, it raked in an estimated $310 million in North America and the United Kingdom in 24 hours. With that game, and others such as Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed 2” and Nintendo’s “New Super Mario Bros.,” November is poised to be a strong month for the industry. Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, said Thursday his company expects a strong holiday season. October sales of gaming hardware fell by nearly a quarter to $380.7 million. The Wii from Nintendo Co. was the month’s best-selling gaming system, followed by the handheld DS, also from Nintendo. Sony’s PlayStation 3 was in third place. All three of the gaming console makers — Sony, Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo — have cut the prices of their systems in the past few months to entice budget-conscious shoppers. Sales of gaming software declined 18 percent, to $572.7 million, and accessory sales slid 2 percent to $118.9 million.

Devo’s whipping it in a big way on entire-album tour By Mark Caro Chicago Tribune

Carlo Allegri/Associated Press

Musician John Mayer rehearses in New York on Nov. 14.

John Mayer makes sure his music rises above tabloids By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY Associated Press

NEW YORK — If you’re engrossed in the tabloid Internet-gossip that has come to define the celebrity world, then John Mayer’s latest CD, Battle Studies, could provide enough fodder to fill at least a dozen Perez Hilton blog posts or at least one story in Us Weekly. The CD’s first single, “Heartbreak Warfare,” already has some speculating on its subject with lyrics like: “If you want more love, why don’t you say so?... Bombs are falling everywhere, heartbreak warfare.” Hmmm... could that be a message to a certain famous “friend” who he’s been linked with on and off for the last two years? A look into the much-dissected love life of one of music’s hottest hunks? Mention this to Mayer himself, and you’ll get a serious eye-roll, followed up with an “Are you kidding me?” look. “I know some people think that, but it doesn’t,” a slightly exasperated Mayer says during a break in rehearsals for two upcoming concerts to promote his new CD (his concert aired on Fuse on Tuesday night, the same day as the album’s release). “That would mean that my personal life is more powerful than the music itself, and it’s just not. No one’s personal life is more powerful than music itself, and it’s just not. “By the way, I’m not the first person to process a personal life into putting out a record,” he adds. “I think if there’s any intrigue — obviously it would be silly of me to ask somebody not to be intrigued — but I think when the music starts playing, you’re not thinking about my life, you’re thinking about yours.”

Mayer has rarely shied away from attention. He provides must-read updates to his more than 2.6 million followers on Twitter, engaged in a high-profile romance with Jennifer Aniston (which followed the high-profile romance with Jessica Simpson, which followed a romance with yet another starlet), has written for blogs and magazines and is known as one of the wittiest, media-savvy entertainers around. But he is weary of those who would rather put the focus on John Mayer, the celebrity, and not John Mayer, the critically acclaimed, multiplatinum singer-songwriter-guitarist once heralded by Rolling Stone as one of rock’s new “guitar gods.” “I’ve never liked the idea of somebody co-opting who I am, and I don’t think anybody does,” says Mayer, sitting in a small room as guitars wail in the background. It’s been nearly a decade since John Mayer burst onto the music scene as the boyish-looking, uncommonly gifted musician on Room for Squares, with hits like “Your Body Is a Wonderland.” Over the years, he’s worked with everyone from B.B. King to Buddy Guy, won seven Grammys and created signature hits like “Daughters” and “Gravity.” Billed as the “next James Taylor,” he quickly created a musical identity of his own. Battle Studies — his fourth studio album — is what he describes as perhaps his most lyrically complex, and yet at the same time, his most straightfoward. Now a veteran musician and producer, he has more confidence and experience when making a record: “I don’t see it as a series of winning bets. I see it as something I do for a living.”

Devo plans to release its first new studio album in 20 years in 2010, but the band that’s touring now is rooted firmly in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Four original members, plus a younger drummer (Josh Freese), are revisiting their two most noteworthy albums, both just rereleased by Warner Brothers. First is the taut, guitardriven debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! (1978), perhaps best known for the herkyjerky cover of the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Then, the philosophy-minded new wavers exchange their yellow jumpsuits for red Energy Domes to perform their synth-happy commercial breakthrough, Freedom of Choice (1980), which spawned the band’s signature hit, “Whip It.” Singer/songwriter/keyboardist Mark Mothersbaugh, a prolific soundtrack composer (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Rugrats, most of Wes Anderson’s films), said he wasn’t keen on the idea of performing entire albums until the band re-created Are We Not Men? at an All Tomorrow’s Parties concert in London in May. “I just totally wasn’t convinced when we rehearsed it, and then we played it, and then all of a sudden I started thinking, I could think of about 50 bands I would love to go hear them play their first album,” Mothersbaugh said on the phone from Los Angeles, where the band was kicking off its tour. Here are some highlights of our conversation: Why he makes no apologies for these shows being rooted in the past: “I remember playing at Inland Invasion in Southern California a few years ago, and they lumped together a bunch of people that were, for lack of a better term, ’80s bands. So we were on the same bill with Blondie and Flock of Seabutts (sic) and Billy Idol, and I kind of really wanted to see Billy Idol, and he came out, and he played ‘Rebel Yell’ and something else, and everybody was going crazy, and then he said, ‘And now here’s the new album!’ And then everybody kind of went ‘whoaaaaa’ and had to listen to like 2005 or 2006 versions of what Billy Idol was up to. And honestly I wasn’t that interested in what he was up to. I felt like he represented a specific time, and that made his new stuff not as resonant or relevant to myself and apparently other people in the audience.” The show’s format: “It’s short and sweet. We show some films first, from the day. And then come out and play the album starting on Side 1, Track 1, and play Side 1 of the record, immediately flip it over and play Side 2 without any interruptions. We do an encore with a couple of later songs just to kind of help ease the pain of albums (being) 35 minutes, 40 minutes long.”

Kris Allen’s debut is cool, but average On Kris Allen’s self-titled debut album, the American Idol presents a collection of pop-rock tunes that are cool and simple — a reflection of what we saw from the married 24-year-old on the eighth season of Idol. Allen, known for his boy-next-door charm, co-wrote nine of the 13 tracks and collaborated with Mike Elizondo (Eminem, Carrie Underwood), Toby Gad (Milli Vanilli, Jordin Sparks) and Irish rockers The Script, among others. While the CD is a somewhat enjoyable one, it is also average — much like Allen himself. Songs like the heartfelt “Bring It Back” and the soaring “The Truth” could make Allen sound extraordinary — too bad he doesn’t have enough of them. — By Mesfin Fekadu, Associated Press Kris Allen is an earnest, likable guy,

and it’s a victory for him that his postAmerican Idol debut remains earnest and likable, despite all the ill-fitting ballads and unnecessary glop piled on him. Allen is at his best on his own “Red Guitar,” with its chiming guitars and heartfelt vocals that signal his true connection to its emotions. Sure, he can sing conventional pop-rock like The Script’s “Live Like We’re Dying” and “Written All Over My Face” just fine, but he can’t pretend enough to sell songs that feel foreign to him. It’s an Idol time-crunch aberration that he has to even try. With any luck, his future projects won’t make him try that again. — By Glenn Gamboa, Newsday

50 Cent leaves little to chance in new CD 50 Cent Before I Self Destruct

Since 50 Cent gambled and lost the last time he released an album — remember The Bet with Kanye West over who’d sell more albums? — this time, he’s leaving little to chance. Before I Self Destruct (Aftermath/ Interscope) essentially collects all the examples of what made Fitty one of the decade’s biggest stars in one place. He brings the hard songs to maintain the image, the soft songs to woo radio and the ladies and, of course, the beefs to generate publicity — a combination that has worked before, but with decreasing effectiveness each time. On “So Disrespectful,” Fitty takes on Young Buck, Young Jeezy and his archrival The Game. (“Come on, Game, you’ll never be my equal, your homies shoot dogs, my — — shoot people.”) He needles Jay-Z, saying, “Jay’s a big man, he’s too big to respond,” and he slams his ex-girlfriend Shaniqua Tompkins.

But that all feels kind of tame compared to other rap battles he’s launched. He’s far better on the brash “Death to My Enemies,” riding Dr. Dre’s distinctive beat masterfully, as the insults pile up and the body count rises. Where Fitty has improved most is in showing his softer side — teaming with R. Kelly on the crude-but-catchy “Could’ve Been You” and truly shining with Ne-Yo on the unstoppable current single “Baby By Me.” It’s only a matter of time before 50 Cent realizes these kinds of songs are where the big money is for him. — By Glenn Gamboa, Newsday

Pretty Ricky Pretty Ricky

It’s amazing the R&B/hip-hop foursome Pretty Ricky even had time to record their latest self-titled album Pretty Ricky. All that wooing of women has got to be taxing on the body and soul. For its aim, this is a very good album. It wouldn’t have worked if the quirky quartet of Spectacular, Diamond Blue, Slick ’em and — ahem — Lingerie had held back. They don’t. They ooze of audacity, crooning smooth lyrics so brazen it’s like four R. Kellys on stage. On the upbeat “Mr. Goodbar” they sing about covering their love interest’s body in “Hershey kisses.” When they slow it down on “Lapdance,” the song turns into a sizzling instructional about poledance moves and sipping Patron tequila. Pretty Ricky asks that you check

all nuance at the door. This album is a snapshot of the urban male libido in overdrive. And for better or worse, it works like a charm. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: “Discovery Channel” is unlike anything you’ve ever heard. Any song that has wild beasts and birds as back-up singers and name drops both the Discovery and Weather Channel defies all convention. Oh, and would you believe it’s about sex? — By Ron Harris, Associated Press

Norah Jones ditches old band, piano Norah Jones The Fall

Norah Jones ditches her old band, and most of her trademark piano playing, for her latest release The Fall. Jones sounds more confident and stretches her song writing muscle on her fourth solo record and the second in a row where she wrote or co-wrote all of the songs. The Fall is more of an evolution rather than a wholesale abandonment of her style. Sure, the piano is largely absent, but Jones’ guitar playing style shows the influence of her keyboarding. It’s simple, restrained but still melodic. Producer Jacquire King, who’s new to Jones and had previously produced Tom Waits’ Mule Variations, deserves some credit for the shift in style. It’s a subtle one that Jones fans likely will embrace, but the growth from her breakout 2002

debut Come Away With Me is clear. Jones penned eight of the 13 songs alone and shares credit with others on the remaining five, including Ryan Adams on “Light as a Feather.” Her continued growth as a writer, not just as singer, brings another exciting dimension to The Fall. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: “Chasing Pirates,” the first single and the record’s opener, exemplifies Jones’ new direction. Jones uses her vocals, and a catchy rhythm-based hook, to lure the listener in before anyone can realize just how unlike expectations it really sounds. — By Scott Bauer, Associated Press

On a football field, keeping your head on a swivel is key so as not to be surprised by a bone-crushing lick. Who knew one should employee that same tactic while watching a movie. Based on a true story far too sappy for fiction, Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) goes from homeless Memphis youth to the opposite extreme through the actions of Leigh Anne Tuohy, a strong-willed, sickeningly wealthy Southern woman played by Sandra Bullock. The Blind Side is much more about the journey and personal growth of Oher and the Tuohy family than football, but with its near-holiday release you do get a fair dose of the gridiron. Director John Lee Hancock, who also directed The Rookie, starts at the whistle hitting you from every direction giving even the most unsporting enough of an idea to follow along. ground before you even know the previews are over. With the “I’m not going to cry” a wash in the first 15 minutes, Hancock uses the rest of the time to weave in high school football, bad acting from current college coaches and surprising plot twists for those not completely familiar with the full story of the Ole Miss AllAmerican and current NFL lineman. Bullock, the Hollywood starlet, is by far the biggest draw in this film. With a Southern accent that isn’t horrible, she holds her own and then some in a pleasing departure from the ho-hum romantic comedies she’s become known for over the years. Aaron, a virtual unknown, is rough at times, but believable in a role where his lines grow alongside the personal development of Oher. Surprisingly, though, country music star Tim McGraw holds up as well on the silver screen as he would on a soundtrack. The movie has its moments that will make the stomachs of sports purists turn, but not so many so as to ruin the feel-good story. In real life, many have questioned the sincerity of the Tuohys’ adoption of Oher. Would the East Side family — with so many ties to the Ole Miss Rebels — have taken in this West Side youth if, athletically, he couldn’t have gotten out of his own way? In real life, who knows? Hancock doesn’t sidestep the issue, but in theme with the film does put a positive spin on the situation, making even the hardest hearts color blind. Bran Strickland is the sports editor for The Star. He can be reached at 235-3570.

How might a kid — OK, a teenager — protect himself from that dreaded fate described in legions of sci-fi movies (including The Fourth Kind), the anal probe? If you weren’t thinking “champagne cork,” you were way off according to the sci-fi kids cartoon Planet 51. A genial but generic riff on sci-fi movie history, Planet has barely enough slapstick to keep the kids interested. Children won’t get the many sci-fi movie references — or the cork gag — and adults probably won’t find them that funny. But there’s an adorable Mars Roverlike robot named “Rover” who wags his antenna and chases rocks like a Jack Russell, and an alien Chihuahua shaped like the beast from Alien. He skooches his butt across lawns and carpets just like a real Chihuahua. But don’t ask what happens when he pees. The big joke here — given away in the movie’s trailers — is that an alien has “invaded” a provincial and paranoid suburban town. And the alien is us, a NASA astronaut who touches down, bounces out with his American flag (humming “Thus Spake Zarathustra” from 2001), only to realize he’s interrupting an alien barbecue. Astronaut Chuck Taylor (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) has discovered an alternate alien 1950s — with drive-ins, do-wop music, “duck and cover” drills and VW hover-Beetles. His first thought — “Kennedy’s gonna freak” when Mission Control hears about “sea monkeys dancin’ to the oldies.” But the “sea monkeys,” conditioned by years of It Came from Outer Space horror movies, are the ones who freak. Lem (Justin Long) is the odd, antennae’d E.T. Chuck talks into helping him get back home, evade the trigger-happy Army general (Gary Oldman) and the jumpy natives who are sure that the guy in the puffy suit wants to eat their brains. This first offering from Spanish animation start-up Ilion is a good-looking movie, with a lush retro-futuristic design. It’s just low on laughs. The superior Monsters vs. Aliens covered some of the same ground — references of earlier movies, from Alien and E.T. to 2001, The Right Stuff and, naturally, Plan Nine from Outer Space.

‘Star Trek,’ boldly going on blu-ray and DVD The Washington Post Director J.J. Abrams and the creative team behind the latest Star Trek movie did something very smart when they decided to reboot that quintessential, sci-fi-geek franchise: they made it more like Star Wars. “I always think of it as, Star Trek is beautiful classical music and Star Wars is rock ’n’ roll, and it felt like Star Trek needed a little more rock ’n’ roll to connect to a modern audience,” explains screenwriter and executive producer Alex Kurtzman during a featurette on the new Star Trek release, which arrived Tuesday as a single DVD ($30), a two-disc DVD ($35) and a three-disc Blu-ray set ($40). Well, mission accomplished, boys. This Kirkmeets-Spock origin story

delivers just as much kinetic, zippy fun in the home-video format as it did in theaters this summer. And yes, for all those concerned Trekkers out there, it does pay homage to the many sagas inspired by the Starship Enterprise. It just does so in a way that keeps all the beaming-up accessible to non-fans — you know, those people who think “Live long and prosper” is a slogan from a Kaiser Permanente commercial. Speaking of living long, viewers may need to do so if they want to have enough time to watch all the extras on the Blu-ray edition of Star Trek. The Blu-ray collection immerses its audience in the experience of creating the 11th Trek, taking us to the sets (news flash: the engine room of the Enterprise is actually a Budweiser plant in Van Nuys,

Calif.), the make-up room and even the studio where a massive orchestra recorded Michael Giacchino’s swelling score. In addition to the featurettes, the Blu-ray also boasts nine deleted scenes as well as a silly, six-minute gag reel and an often engaging commentary track from Abrams, writers Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and producers Bryan Burk and Damon Lindelof.

Praying for another $750 million absolution at the global box office, the fairly unholy trinity of Tom Hanks, director Ron Howard and The Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown reteam on Brown’s earlier novel and manage to be more obscure than a Latin Mass. As Robert Langdon, Hanks is recruited by a mysterious emissary of a mysterious biotech firm to help explain the mysterious death of a mysterious scientist whose chest was branded by his killer with the word “Illuminati,” an ancient league of science-minded elites. What the killer was after was antimatter, which the killer promises will be used to level St. Peter’s Basilica. As he embarks on a mission to save Roman Catholicism, Langdon encounters a young papal assistant (Ewan McGregor), a churlish Vatican policeman (Stellan Skarsgard) and an imperious cardinal (Armin Mueller-Stahl). Four Christmases

There’s a good movie buried here, underneath the layers of baloney and ham, but we never get much of a taste. Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn play San Francisco lovebirds who avoid Christmas with their divorced parents by planning vacations disguised as volunteer expeditions. But this year, a thick fog grounds all the flights. Before Christmas Day is out, the pair has to make four stops, one for each divorced parent. Vaughn and Witherspoon, both peppy and likable, have before them four scenarios in which to preen, riff, jab and yuk it up. And get a load of their parents: Robert Duvall, Mary Steenburgen, Sissy Spacek and Jon Voight — all Oscar winners. Unfortunately, the actors are fancy window dressing in this movie, which rushes from scene to scene before bad gags have time to land their bad punch lines. Contains sexual humor and language. — The Washington Post

Meet the magical Mr. Claus By Mary Eloise H. Leake Special to the Star

In the months before Christmas, you may think Santa spends all his time in his workshop. Wrong. If he’s in town, on most mornings he’s at Champion Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center in Oxford, working out. Rick Parris, an ‘08 graduate of the International University of Santa Claus, exercises to keep his knees in shape to securely hold good little girls and boys. He’s lost weight. Since his belly takes up less room, his lap can accommodate a host of children. Plus his strength and endurance have improved, making the often long days required to discover kids’ hopes and dreams a snap. You can meet Parris, aka Santa, Saturday at Anniston’s Christmas Un-Parade. Children of all ages can schmooze with Santa under a sparkling tent on Noble and 11th Street. Parris will also appear at the Jacksonville Christmas Parade on Dec. 1. Parris didn’t start out to be Santa. He was an Alabama state trooper. But Christmas 1991 found his Heflin grandmother’s nursing home in a

at the last minute, Parris was asked to sub. The smiles and the genuine joy on the residents’ faces gave him deepseated satisfaction. “That’s when the Santa bug bit me,” he says. Parris spent the next year acquiring a custom-made suit and real leather “Santa” boots. With a brass buckle made to his specifications, he asked a Gatlinburg leather crafter to cut a fourinch-wide belt. After the purchase of a good wig, mustache and beard, he was in business, backed supportively by his wife, Brenda. (While she does not personify Mrs. Claus, she does enjoy watching some of his events.) During the 1992 Christmas season, Parris began making private home visits to listen to children’s wishes and to read The Night Before Christmas. Soon churches, day cares, nursing homes and doctors’ offices were enlivened by the jolly man, whom his then 2-year-old granddaughter, Ashton Bourg, called “Ho-Ho.” Listening to children’s wishes can be poignant. “Kids ask for Daddy to get a job, Mommy and Daddy to get back together, or a boyfriend for Mommy,” Parris says. He gently tells such chil-

dren that their requests are not something that Santa can fix in his workshop. “Last year a little 7- or 8-year-old school girl learned that her grandfather had just died. I talked to her and prayed with her,” he says. “You can’t predict what a child will ask for. Often at the inner-city schools, kids are told they can ask for only one item. This is their big chance to ‘talk to the man.’ Yet those are the kids that often ask for something for someone else.” Parris retired from the Alabama Department of Public Safety in 2008, and immediately started growing the beard and mustache, which had been against state troopers’ rules. After extensive research, he modeled his present St. Nick image on the 1931 Coca-Cola Santa. He then attended the International University of Santa Claus, which hosts one- and two-day training sessions around the country. Until then, Parris had never met another Santa. He picked up lots of tips, including some on hair and beard care. “If you meet someone with more hair products than his wife has, you have probably met a professional Santa,” Parris says.

The evergreen Ebenezer Scrooge By Susan King Los Angeles Times

HOLLYWOOD — Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol embodies the true spirit of the holidays with its indelible characters: miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who learns the meaning of the yuletide when he’s visited by three spirits during Christmas Eve; his earnest employee Bob Cratchit; and Cratchit’s youngest son, Tiny Tim. The story also has captured the imagination of filmmakers over the last century, with some of the most accomplished — and often unusual — actors taking on the role of Scrooge, the latest being Jim Carrey in Disney’s animated take on the tale. Here’s a look at some of the actors who would be Scrooge.

Sir Seymour Hicks Scrooge (1935)

This rarely seen adaptation stars the legendary Hicks as the miserly one. It’s definitely worth checking out because Hicks was the seminal Scrooge in the early part of the 20th century in England. He began playing the role on stage in 1901 when he was 30.

Directed by Brian Desmond Hurst, this version features an absolute crackerjack of a performance from veteran Sim, who beautifully handles Scrooge’s transition from heartless money-grubber to a man freed from his shackles of hate and greed.

Lionel Barrymore

Albert Finney

A Christmas Carol (1939) Drew Barrymore’s greatuncle more often than not chewed the scenery whole in movies, but his distinctive theatrical voice is perfectly suited for Scrooge in Orson Welles’ magical Campbell Playhouse production that aired on the radio Christmas Eve 70 years ago.

Scrooge (1970) Finney was all of 34 when he tackled the role of Scrooge in this colorful musical adaptation featuring an effective score by Leslie Bricusse — the toe-tapping “Thank You Very Much” received an Oscar nomination. Though Finney can’t sing his way out of a paper bag, his scratchy vocals seem appropriate for Scrooge.

Alastair Sim A Christmas Carol (1951) This British production is considered by many to be the most satisfying of all the adaptations of Dickens’ tale.

Scrooge McDuck Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983) Oscar-nominated animated short with all Disney

characters playing the roles — Scrooge McDuck, Mickey Mouse as Bob Cratchit, Goofy as Jacob Marley’s ghost and Jiminy Cricket as the Ghost of Christmas Past.

George C. Scott “A Christmas Carol” (1984) Clive Donner, who was the editor of the 1951 adaptation, helmed this splendid TV version with Scott at his curmudgeonly best — and sporting a spot-on British accent — as Scrooge. The handsome production features several acclaimed British actors including Frank Finlay, Edward Woodward, David Warner, Susannah York, Nigel Davenport and Roger Rees.

Bill Murray Scrooged (1988) Murray tackled spirits in two Ghostbusters hits, but he’s defenseless against the ghosts in this updated, unsatisfying

take on the Scrooge story. Murray plays Frank Cross, a selfish, glib TV executive who is producing a live version of Christmas Carol.

Michael Caine The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) The Oscar-winning Caine has a field day as Scrooge in this warm and cuddly adaptation featuring the adorable Muppets — Kermit is Bob Cratchit; Miss Piggy as Emily Cratchit; the Great Gonzo is Charles Dickens.

Patrick Stewart A Christmas Carol (1999) Stewart has been performing a one-man theatrical version of the story for years. But he plays only the part of Scrooge in this TV production that premiered on TNT. Joining him in the festivities are Richard E. Grant, Joel Grey and Ian McNeice.

The Spirit of Anniston is always looking for a new twist to put on its annual Christmas parade. This year, it’s become an “Un-Parade,” where the floats stand still, and the people walk up and down the streets. All the regular trappings of the parade remain: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, elected officials, beauty pageant winners — and Santa. Only instead of driving down the street and waving to all the kids, the big man will now greet children near the city Christmas tree, at 11th and Noble Street. (Photos with Santa are available for a charge). Other highlights of this year’s parade: n Appearances by Star Wars characters from the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. n Children can string popcorn and cranberries and make ornaments for the downtown Christmas tree. n Church and school choral groups will perform on a music stage.

Anniston Christmas un-parade When: Saturday, 5-7:30 p.m. Where: Noble Street, from Ninth to 12th streets, downtown Anniston How much: Free Contact: 236-0996 or www.spiritofanniston.org n Karate and dance groups will perform on a stage. n Various charities will be collecting food, toys and money for the needy. n There will be a food court. n An art car, designed by the art students at Donoho School, will be on display. High school students are painting the car, which will then be decorated with hundreds of magnets designed by elementary, middle and high school students. The art car movement — in which a car is treated like a work of art, only drivable — has taken off since the 1990s. An annual Art Car Parade in Houston, Texas, attracts several hundred entries. The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft sponsors an annual Art

Car Weekend. There’s also ArtCar Fest on the West Coast, and art cars at the Burning Man festival in Nevada. The “un-parade” idea came out of a brainstorming session after last year’s parade, said Betsy Bean, executive director of Spirit of Anniston. “Some folks put a lot of work into their floats, and then they go by so quickly in a regular parade,” she said. Plus, she added, moving around can help spectators keep warm. Golf carts will be available for the elderly and handicapped. “We’ve had to be very creative in thinking about how to showcase people who would ordinarily go by in a vehicle and wave,” said Bean. “For instance, we’ll have our pageant winners walk out on a red carpet in the performance area and introduce themselves at a microphone, and we’ll encourage them to walk through the crowd afterward. “We’ve created The Official Café, where elected officials will be mixing and mingling with their constituents, and serving up cookies.”

LOS ANGELES — Ladies’ man Ricardo Bomba is bringing his charms to The Simpsons, and it’s all the doing of a hospital operations manager with a vivid imagination. Peggy Black, 52, of Orange, Conn., won a contest to create a character for Fox’s long-running animated series, with her entry triumphing among the more than 25,000 received, the network said Thursday. “Rrrri-carrr-do Bomba,” Black said, extravagantly rolling the “R’s” in Spanish-language fashion. “He’s someone that all the women love and all the men want to be.” Bomba will be introduced in the Jan. 31 episode featuring guest star Chris Martin of Coldplay. The episode had been mostly completed, with a spot reserved for the contest character. In “Million Dollar Maybe,” Homer Simpson is rushing to meet Marge for a date when he encounters Bomba in the episode that centers on a winning lottery ticket. It’s possible Bomba could appear again, said executive producer Al Jean, who helped judge the contest. He described the contest, part of the show’s celebration of its 20th year, as a thank you to loyal fans. Black, who counts herself among them, was encouraged to enter by Dwight Vann, 42, a colleague at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, Conn., where she is operations manager for the cancer center and a radiation therapist. Her favorite character is Bart Simpson, she said, “because he’s such a bad boy. He’s so misunderstood.” In pondering her contest entry, Black decided there was a void on The Simpsons and that Springfield needed “something like a Casanova,” she said. Bomba, a handsome, smoothtalking South American nicknamed “La Bomba,” works at the town’s nuclear power plant by day and “by night, works Springfield’s singles scene,” as Fox describes him. So is Bomba the man of her dreams? “I’m married to the man of my dreams,” Black replied.

By Chuck Barney Contra Costa Times

Even before the nation’s economy went south, the prime-time sitcom was mired in its own miserable slump. Ratings plunged, critics groused, shows fizzled and, throughout Hollywood, pink slips piled up. “For a while there, we were looking worse than the auto industry,” says Christopher Lloyd, co-executive producer of ABC’s freshman comedy, Modern Family. “A lot of my writer friends struggled. A lot of jobs were lost. It got really, really dismal.” But now something funny is happening in prime time. TV comedy is finally showing signs of life, thanks largely to a crop of new shows brimming with artistic ambition, stellar casts and an ingredient that had become scarce in recent years: heart. At the forefront of this recovery is Modern Family, a hilarious, feel-good series that offers a new take on the family sitcom with a “mockumentary” device and a three-tiered focus on an extended brood. And then there’s Glee, Fox’s hourlong musical comedy that dares to blend earnest dance numbers with satirical humor. Other new shows feeling the love from critics and viewers include NBC’s Community, a twisted sitcom about junior-college misfits, and two more ABC comedies: Cougar Town, which has Courteney Cox playing a love-starved single mom; and The Middle, with Patricia Heaton as the frazzled matriarch of a kooky Indiana family. Meanwhile, among established shows, The Big Bang Theory on CBS has seen its ratings soar since moving to a new time slot behind TV’s most popular comedy, Two and a Half Men. It all adds up to a fresh surge of optimism for a genre that had been pushed to the brink of extinction by dramas and reality shows. Last season, NBC, which scheduled 18 comedies in 1998, was down to four, and ABC entered the fall with just one comedy on its entire schedule. If there’s a unifying element to the new shows on ABC and elsewhere, it’s a willingness to wear their hearts on their sleeves. As

ABC’s ‘Modern Family’ stars from left, Ed O’Neill, Rico Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Nolan Gould, Julie Bowen, Ariel Winter, Ty Burrell, Sarah Hyland, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet. USA Today critic Robert Bianco recently pointed out, they have restored warmth to a form that had become “almost fatally chilly.” Indeed, the prevailing sitcom tone of the past few years has been one of ironic detachment, cynicism and even snideness. Leading practitioners of this style include Arrested Development, 30 Rock and The Office, shows that generally attract critics and Emmy voters, but also tend to alienate many viewers. “I think snarky comedy is a little bit easier to do. Sweet and earnest is not what writers generally associate with sharp comedy,” says Falvey. “But television is a medium where you welcome these people into your home on a weekly basis. You want characters you care about. You want to feel some warmth, not despair.” On the other hand, viewers didn’t want the same-old tired, predictable sitcom tropes. Collectively, the new shows appear to be succeeding because they maintain a creative edge while also offering relatable, sympathetic characters who resonate with the audience. Glee, for example, has its share of biting humor — mostly represented in the scathing remarks of a smirky cheerleading coach

(Jane Lynch). But it also compels viewers to root for its crew of underdog crooners. Likewise, Cougar Town might provoke gasps with some of its midlife sexual shenanigans, but it also features a loving relationship between Cox’s likable character and her teen son (Dan Byrd). Perhaps no new show has struck the balance as well as Modern Family. Created by Lloyd and Steven Levitan (Just Shoot Me), it’s the saga of a sprawling, highly diverse collection of siblings, kids and in-laws. There’s the patriarch who is newly married to a young Colombian trophy wife; his daughter and her suburban family; and his son, part of a gay couple who have just adopted a Vietnamese baby. The stellar cast includes Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell and Sofia Vergara. “When we were kicking around ideas, we asked ourselves, ‘What is the typical American family?”’ recalls Lloyd. “We finally realized that we’re never going to get just one (representation). They come in all shapes and sizes these days. That’s when we hit on the idea of connecting the various parts of a large, extended family.” The setup allows the Modern Family writers to dabble in kidfriendly storylines, but also tackle socially relevant adult themes.

HOLLYWOOD — Katey Sagal is back in mommie-not-so-dearest mode. The actress was hardly the model mother as the wise-cracking, lazy housewife Peg Bundy on Fox’s Married ... With Children. But that character would be “Mother of the Year” next to Gemma Teller Morrow, the ruthless matriarch of an outlaw biker club on FX’s Sons of Anarchy. The role on the drama, which has grown in its second season to one of the cable network’s most popular dramas, is the latest in a gallery of TV mothers for Sagal, who also played a soccer mom on sagal the comedy 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter. While thrilled over the growing popularity of Sons of Anarchy, which was created by her husband, Kurt Sutter, she still finds time for her first love — music. She often performs at the intimate M Club in Hollywood. As she sat in one of the club’s booth, she talked about TV bikers and the late John Ritter. Question: Your character was introduced last season as this tough-as-nails matriarch. But this season started out with her being brutally attacked by a white supremacist (Henry Rollins). Answer: Gemma’s been undone, and there needed to be an incident of that magnitude to undo her. This is a person who has had it tough from the jump, and has a very tough skin. This threatens her family and threatens her sexuality, which is very important to Gemma. It makes her ask all kind of karma questions, God kind of questions that Gemma had shoved away years ago. Q: When your executive producer and husband Kurt Sutter told you what you would have to endure this season, did you raise your eyebrows a bit? A: He explained it to me in the context of the bigger story he was trying to tell, so it made sense. It wasn’t gratuitous. Sure, I was a little apprehensive, but I know these kinds of things are handled really delicately. I also know Henry is a really sweet guy. He was probably more nervous than me. I’m sure he was a little on edge. Q: After Married ... With Children, what was the industry perception of you in terms of handling meaty dramatic roles? A: Certainly in terms of casting me in series situations, I had to prove that I had those chops. But that’s always been OK with me. When you do something for 11 years, there’s a perception of who you are and what you do. It does take a minute to turn that around. And with me, it took a minute.

NEW YORK — CBS News is planning an ambitious turn-of-decade look at America’s position in the world that’s also designed as an opening competitive shot at Diane Sawyer. Called CBS Reports: Where America Stands, the series will look at issues such as health care, the military, the economy and crime. Reporters will show what was happening 10 years ago and compare it to now, with predictions about how things will be like at the start of the 2020s. The CBS Evening News will be the centerpiece for the reports. But The Early Show, Face the Nation and the network’s radio and online outlets will also participate, said Sean McManus, CBS News president. “People really do want to know how safe we are and could we fight another war if we had to,” McManus said.

Is it stronger than it was 10 years ago? Is it weaker? And how prepared are we for the challenges of the next decade.” The series could run for a couple of months and get a

real showcase on Katie Couric’s newscast, he said. It’s no coincidence that the reports are designed to begin right around the time Sawyer takes over for Charles Gibson as anchor of ABC’s World News. McManus wants strong CBS newscasts airing at a time people who miss Gibson might want to look around. CBS is third in the evening news ratings, with ABC second and NBC the leader. “I believe there will be more sampling during the first couple of weeks of January,” he said, “because, anytime there’s a major shift in one of the newscasts, I think it does motivate people to see what all of the networks are doing.” McManus said he was also heartened by the response to CBS’ Children of the Recession project, a major look at the impact of the financial crisis that ran across several of the network platforms. CBS also recently took considerable time on the evening news to examine the war in Afghanistan. The CBS News chief said he believes these projects are energizing for his news division and help make its work distinctive when there’s much competition for attention between broadcast and cable news outlets.
