AC/DC, Backtracks

The essence of a box set is great packaging, lots of swag and hardto-find content. All that is here on the latest AC/DC box set. The high-end version comes in a box made to look like a road-worn amplifier, complete with AC/DC logo. But look — the top comes off to reveal one of the treasures inside actually IS a working amplifier that you can plug a guitar into a jam along! The three CDs lean heavily on Bsides and live tracks that were released piecemeal as part of something else, and not a whole lot can be considered truly rare. That’s particularly true with the early tracks featuring original singer Bon Scott, who died in 1980. But the band has pretty much scraped the bottom of the Bon barrel in previous post-mortem releases. The most interesting Scott track here is a live version of “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” from Sydney, Australia in 1977. The set also comes with a 164-page coffee table book laden with previously unpublished photos from 1974 to the present, a vinyl record duplicating the first CD of “rarities,” a poster from their 1977 European tour, buttons, stickers, temporary tattoos and a 1975 vintage AC/DC guitar pick. It’s not cheap, at $200-plus, but for true fans, it’s probably worth it. — Wayne Parry

Michael Jackson, Hello World: The Motown Solo Collection

While the documentary This Is It shows Michael Jackson as a man able to thrill with his smooth moves and voice up until his death, the three-CD box set Hello World: The Motown Solo Collection shows Jackson as a boy launching into the pop stratosphere.

With a bright yellow package depicting a cherubic, Afro-haired Jackson on the cover, the superb collection features every Jackson solo recording released from 1971 to 1975 — albums Got To Be There, Ben, Music & Me and Forever, Michael. Also included are songs released from the Jackson vault after he became the King of Pop, the 1984 album Farewell My Summer Love and 1986’s Looking Back to Yesterday, featuring previously unreleased masters. Bonus tracks, colorful photos, album covers, original liner notes and essays by Motown’s Suzee Ikeda and author and professor Mark Anthony Neal complete the box set. Most of all, Hello World showcases Jackson’s glorious voice, an instrument so nuanced that he sounds much older and wiser than his young years. A spoken word intro leads into Jackson’s soulful cover of the Bill Withers classic “Ain’t No Sunshine”: Jackson lets his boyish falsetto soar over backing strings, in complete control over the vocal dips and swoops. — Solvej Schou

Various Artists, Woodstock — 40 Years On: Back to Yasgur’s Farm

First there was the triple album. Then came its sequel, a double album. Now the single largest collection of music from the three-day Woodstock festival has been gathered in the six-CD box set Woodstock — 40 Years On: Back to Yasgur’s Farm. Even with 77 songs, what’s presented is a mere sliver of what was actually played at the concert 40 years ago. It would take 30 discs, not six, to release all of it. The box set does a lot of things right — including sequencing the music in the actual order in which it was played, to at least give a reasonable semblance of what it was like there over those three days. It also offers up more snippets of stage banter, including the entirety of farmer Max Yasgur’s gracious speech to the half-million concert-goers on his property and prolonged warnings about which type of acid (not the brown!!) to take. Unfortunately, only half of the

songs are previously unreleased. That means true Woodstock aficionados will have to pay, again, for much of the music they already own. But for anyone who hasn’t upgraded from the vinyl of the original soundtrack, or never bothered to buy any of the music, this is the way to go. — Scott Bauer

Various Artists, Where the Action Is! Los Angeles Nuggets 1965-1968

Los Angeles Nuggets refers not to a 1960s team in the American Basketball Association, but to tunes recorded by L.A. acts largely overlooked during rock’s heyday. While fans elsewhere were focused on happenings in London and San Francisco, a lively club scene developed on Sunset Strip in the mid-1960s, with performers drawing on influences that ranged from the Rolling Stones to the Monkees, “Sgt. Pepper” to “Pet Sounds,” and Bob Dylan to Bo Diddley. Rhino has collected the era’s Southern California sound in a 101song, four-CD package, and it’s a lively set. After all, rock ’n’ roll was still a teenager then. The collection would have benefited from a narrower focus — the scope includes such forgotten bands as the Others, the Hysterics and London Phogg, but also the Beach Boys, Byrds and Doors. The range in quality is broad, too, with surprising gems from the Light, the Garden Club and the Knack (the California version), but also a weak Monkees tune (“Daily Nightly”) and bagpipes on an awful rendition of “I Love How You Love Me.” There are lots of lovely three-part harmonies, but also too many tambourines, bad guitar solos and spasms of druggy ’60s weirdness. Still, Rhino knows how to make musical time travel fun. The antecedents of every L.A. group from the Eagles to X are here, along with earlycareer performances by Randy Newman, Lowell George, Stephen Stills, Ry Cooder and Warren Zevon. As always, Rhino’s packaging is first-rate, with extensive liner notes and photos in a Dr. Seuss-style book. Nuggets offers a welcome alternative to the local classic

rock radio station.

Richard Thompson, Walking On a Wire (1968-2009)

The one-ofa-kind fretwork we’ve heard before, and Richard Thompson on guitar remains as distinctive and thrilling as contemporaries Jimi, Jimmy or Jerry. The boundarydefying blend of musical genres is familiar, too, as is the potent lyrical cocktail: two parts melancholy, one part humor (which pretty much mirrors real life). No, there’s nothing new in Walking On a Wire, a four-CD, career-spanning set. Yet the collection is revelatory because it shows how consistently Thompson has delivered through the years. There’s not a dud in this 71-song batch, and the many highlights are sprinkled across the decades. The list of 1960s musicians still vital is short but includes Thompson, whose muse has never flagged. Perhaps the best song he ever wrote is the penultimate selection in this set, the poignant but funny “Dad’s Gonna Kill Me,” inspired by the Iraq war. Or maybe the best song is “1952 Vincent Black Lightning,” a folk tune from 1991 about keys to a motorcycle and much more. Or maybe it’s “Dimming of the Day” from 1975, a ballad lovelier than a Land’s End sunset. Or maybe it’s “Tear Stained Letter” from 1983, which finds common ground in the music of a Kansas City roadhouse and an Irish pub. Vote for your own favorite — Walking On a Wire includes at least one song from every Thompson album. He generously gives ex-wife Linda an extended turn in the spotlight, which is warranted because longtime fans still mourn the demise of their partnership in 1982. Missing is his cover of the Britney Spears hit “Oops! ... I Did It Again.” Also absent is “The End of the Rainbow,” perhaps the best gloomy lullaby ever. With Thompson, four CDs of material simply isn’t enough. — Steven Wine

HOLLYWOOD — Everyone knows that Taylor Swift can’t sing. The teen star might hold the zeitgeist in her pink satin clutch, but she’s regularly criticized for her live vocal performances, which tend toward wild notes and shortness of breath. Her turns onstage at the recent Country Music Association Awards, where she became the youngest entertainer of the year, had critics pulling out descriptions like “shaky,” “a train wreck” and (memorably, from Entertainment Weekly’s Ken Tucker) “wobbly as a newborn colt.” It’s nothing new for a young female singer to take slaps for her lack of chops. Remember Madonna’s early days or, really, most of Janet Jackson’s career? What’s different about Swift is that her vocal problems actually play into her strengths. Ridiculously precocious as a writer, accessibly adorable when it comes to image, Swift benefits from having a flaw. Pretty but gangly, she’s like a Disney heroine before the kiss makes her a real princess; her pitch problems enhance the sense that she’s a work in progress. Swift’s little voice drives adults crazy — especially country-music lovers, who decry her as inauthentic — but for the daughters and mothers who are her target audience, it shows she’s as real as they are, with room to grow. Swift’s case contrasts informatively with that of another young, huge-selling female musician. Leona Lewis, whose second album, Echo, was released last week, had the most popular single of 2008 with “Bleeding Love,” a long drink of heartache built around her sumptuously somber vocal lines. A gorgeous 23-year-old Londoner groomed to perfection by Idolmaker Simon Cowell, Lewis has a voice like the young Whitney Houston’s — massive and sleek, athletic yet ethereal, with a tone that bespeaks the sublime. But Lewis has a problem too. Her critics perceive her as hollow, inexpressive — all voice and no personality. Unlike Houston and Mariah Carey, whose marital, chemical and/or psychiatric crises lent them the aura of the real, Lewis seems determined to remain sane and a little bit distant in her devotion to her craft. Lewis is a lousy tabloid diva, and as a singer, she doesn’t wobble. While her seriousness lends her a certain marketable elegance, it can make her seem more like a product than a person. Echo modernizes her sound by taking it to the dance floor, but its center remains still. While the legions who buy it will admire its “dignity” and “class” (words often used by Lewis’ fans), its impact remains elusive. The female stars who have come to dominate pop in the past decade all express some aspect of the tension between the Perfect Personality and Perfect Voice — neatly summed up by Swift in her megahit “You Belong With Me” as “she’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers,” impervious beauty versus touchable, vulnerable charm. The need to reconcile the cheer captain and the bleacher-sitter within is complicated by what technology has done to the way women relate, both to each other and to men. Mainstream’s flavor came from dance music, revitalized R&B, amateur hours like American Idol, teen pop and other female-friendly forms. The tension between natural beauty and cultivated charm, big voices and small but smart ones, became a central

We can go back to the end of the last decade to understand how this particular story has played out in this one. The year 1999 saw the debuts of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, and the release of The Writing’s on the Wall, the breakthrough album for Beyonce, then the primary member of Destiny’s Child. Physically, all three women worked variations on the classic bombshell persona, foregrounding their sexuality in ways that played into fantasies that men have long enjoyed and women, however reluctantly, have adopted. Spears and Aguilera were hot ingenues and Beyonce was a Glamazon in training. But their singing told a different story. It’s hard to remember now, given all her personal ups and downs and her transformation, on recent albums, into a sonic android, but Spears started out in the role Taylor Swift now occupies. Her voice was cute, flawed and highly individual. Aguilera had the Perfect Voice, giant in her tiny body. And Beyonce was a Personality with a Voice in training. An often inaccurate singer in Destiny’s Child, she developed her chops along with her image, both growing more formidable with each recording and tour. The mainstream stars since these ladies set the standard have played variations on the earlier themes. Susan Boyle, the singing-contest Cinderella whose debut album will be released this week, is the prime example. The stout, middle-age singer is the kind of woman who should have only personality going for her. When she opened her mouth on Britain’s Got Talent to reveal a voice brimming with a golden glow, people’s bewilderment soon gave way to delight, not because she seemed to have worked hard to become so good but because she didn’t: Boyle was a natural

beauty in disguise. Then there’s Rihanna, who releases her third album, Rated R, this week. The 21-year-old Barbadian might be at the first apex of her career, but she doesn’t have the luxury of time. Given her start by the rapping record man Jay-Z, she immediately registered as a younger Beyonce, acting out the same struggle to find a voice that would suit her tough, perfect, fashion-forward image. She was often (unfairly, I think) accused of being little more than a gold-plated coat hanger upon which her male producers hung their own dreams. Then, in February, her boyfriend at that time, Chris Brown, assaulted her. Nothing reads as more intimate, or makes a woman seem more vulnerable, than a mug shot of her bruised face splashed across the gossip sites. Until recently, Rihanna’s response to the violation of her privacy was silence; she continued to appear in public, dressed in her armor of couture, but granted few interviews. Rated R is Rihanna’s artistic statement on the incident, and it shows her working to strike a balance between the openness of a “real” voice and the self-protection offered by a perfect one. “Russian Roulette,” its first single, shocked many listeners; its depiction of love as a deadly game played by peers seemed, to some, to be a case of the victim defiantly blaming herself. But the song also can be interpreted in light of that shifting and always complicated feminine ideal. If it’s a confession, it’s a very sneaky one, one that also implicates the listener. For all its melodrama, “Russian Roulette” reminds us that actual women — even pop stars — are never perfect. They make mistakes, take risks and learn hard lessons, sometimes not as soon as they would like. Trying to find herself within everyone else’s version of perfect, Rihanna is giving us a picture of imperfection that’s worth considering.

LOS ANGELES — During rehearsals for his outlandish American Music Awards performance, amid a thundercloud of throbbing theater lights and special-effects fog, Adam Lambert effortlessly governs the sprawling stage while gripping a microphone in his gloved hands and donning a tight T-shirt slathered with an image of David Bowie’s face. “Let’s do it faster,” the ebony-haired singer prods a choreographer. “Tell them it should be really bright there,” he later cues a technician. “Turn that off,” he barks mid-performance over a backing track at the sound engineer. It was just seven months ago that the seemingly unstoppable 27-year-old glam rocker lost American Idol to nonchalant singer-songwriter Kris Allen on this very stage at the Nokia Theatre, but now it’s Lambert’s world — and we’re just being entertained by it. With his glitzy rock godliness, Lambert has already eclipsed the talent contest’s actual winner and has the potential to outshine all Idols before him. When he begins performing “For Your Entertainment,” the first single and title track from his album out Monday, Lambert’s domination turns outrageous. At one point, he thrusts a leather-clad male backup dancer’s face toward his crotch, and later flashes a knowing smile as he strokes the same dancer’s cheek after plowing through a door that swings both ways. This is not your typical award show routine. “There are a lot of double standards as far as that

goes,” the openly gay singer says backstage, a few days before his Sunday performance. “We’ve seen female pop and rock performers do that for the last 10 years. They’ve been very provocative, owning their power and sexuality. You just don’t see men doing it very often. And I’m hoping to break down that double standard with this number.” While inside the Idol bubble, Lambert dodged the “he-is-isn’t-he?” line of questioning, choosing to reveal all to Rolling Stone magazine after his narrow loss to Allen last May. Lambert believes the time is right for someone like him to be embraced in pop culture while simultaneously smashing established conventions. Unlike his leashed back-up dancers (“I’m not into bondage,” he says with a matter-of-fact smirk), Lambert insists he’s no puppet, and is in control of his record deal with 19 Recordings and RCA Records. He had the artistic direction for his CD, the zany album cover (which features him with blue hair and even more guyliner than usual) to the songs. “Contrary to certain opinions, the management team has been nothing but facilitating of my vision,” Lambert claims. “It’s not the other way around. I don’t know why that impression was made. Creatively, I am in control of my situation. I feel like it is my responsibility to contribute actively, almost primarily, to this because I’m the artist at the center.” Lambert was embroiled in his first controversy last week when Out magazine editor Aaron Hicklin claimed that Lambert’s management team only agreed to a cover shoot if it included a straight woman and didn’t make Lambert look “too gay.” Lambert shot back on Twitter that Hicklin should “refrain from projecting your publications’ agenda onto my career.”

NEW YORK — To create an album as hardhitting as his multiplatinum-selling debut, 2003’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’, 50 Cent says he had to tap into the troubles he dealt with before he became one of hip-hop’s biggest stars. So, the 34-year-old rapper wrote about life before he was rich and famous on his fourth studio CD, Before I Self Destruct, released this month. “I don’t know why but for me personally, pain is more monumental than joy. I can tell you the last time I was in a really hurtful situation faster than I can pinpoint the last time I was laughing,” he said. The new CD features collaborations with usual suspects like Eminem and Dr. Dre, as well R. Kelly, Polow Da Don and Ne-Yo, who appears on the latest single, “Baby By Me.” The Associated Press: In light of your song “Baby By Me,” if you could pick a celebrity to be your “baby mama,” who would it be? 50 Cent: That would probably be an easier question for someone who isn’t a celebrity. I don’t know. Maybe I’d have an interracial relationship with Megan Fox... I’ll get me some Jada and walk around like I’m Will (laughs). Maybe, who else? I’m not really excited by celebrity because I’m a celebrity. People who have a little bit more normalcy can’t understand exactly what it is, but you get accustomed to it and it becomes less interesting. AP: You say this album is darker and more reflective. Talk about that. 50 Cent: The album itself is darker because it reflects on my experience prior to Get Rich or Die Tryin’, so it’s almost the prequel to Get Rich. ... What I’m drawing from in my experiences is a real young aspect of things, and there’s an innocence to it. The portion of life that a child can’t actually assess. And I write it in my way from an adult’s perspective. It just sounds interesting, but I’m utilizing that youthful mentality in order to create it. AP: Do you pay attention to the public opinion? 50 Cent: I’ll consider it, but I don’t respect everyone’s opinion. If I did I’d be a nut case. I’d be one of those people they’ve already seen selfdestructing. ... Britney Spears is a great example because they made a great show out of it when she shaved her head. AP: How do you make sure opinions don’t affect you negatively? 50 Cent: I’m aware. I’m involved. I’m conscious of what goes on the Internet, different things. Everybody’s tough at the keyboards; can’t nobody hurt them, can’t nobody do nothing to them... everybody has an opinion on the keyboard... I don’t think you should look at all of it. At different points, I’ll look at the response to records, maybe a page, and I’ll allow that page to gauge whether they enjoyed it or not.

Cosby rap CD bold but lacks spark Bill Cosby Presents the Cosnarati: State of Emergency Bill Cosby is gangster when it comes to helping black people. Meaning he’s ruthless, bold, fearless — and will do anything to achieve his objective. Cosby has already absorbed enormous criticism from African-Americans for his blunt attacks on self-destructive black behavior and hip-hop culture. Now he’s taking his crusade into the lion’s den with the improbable rap album State of Emergency. No, the Cos is not on the mic — he executive produced the project and provided the concepts for all 14 songs. The actual rapping is done by three little-known artists; the music was created by Cosby’s longtime collaborator William “Spaceman” Patterson, with help from Cedric “Ced Gee” Miller of the 1980s rap group Ultramagnetic MCs. The songs range from descriptions of black afflictions, challenges to self-improvement, celebrations of black women to visions of a better future. Sometimes the rappers play bad guy, delivering first-person narratives that provide context for their evil ways and showing that Cosby is not simply “blaming the victim.” It’s a powerful, much-needed

message, the polar opposite of today’s chart-topping rap. Combined with Cosby’s call for nationwide meetings to discuss his album and create action plans, State of Emergency has the potential to actually change lives. There’s only one problem: the music itself. Asking your average rap fan to listen to this is like asking a kid to give up Twinkies for tofu. On Emergency, the rappers are decent, but they don’t say anything rewindable. Spaceman’s beats are aiight, with sonic themes that accompany the subject matter, like a siren on the title track, curious guitar twangs on “Why” and a horn-snare march on “Where’s the Parade.” But when you put them together, they don’t create the special flavor that makes you hungry for more. — Jesse Washington, Associated Press

Rihanna’s CD is decent, but uneven Rihanna Rated R

On Rihanna’s last CD, she was a good girl gone bad. On her latest, Rated R, she’s definitely a bad girl — more like a mad girl, and a dangerous one, out for revenge. Throughout her fourth studio album, the 21-year-old is reasserting her strength through viciousness and vulgarity. And sometimes it works, like on “Rude Boy,” “Hard” and “Wait Your Turn (The Wait Is Ova).” But enduring surly, bitter Rihanna through 13 songs can be a bit much, and sometimes you want her to tone the attitude down. Whether it’s the numerous f-bombs she drops or screaming “guns in the air” and that she’s “gangster for life” — it’s unnecessary, and more than adding edge to the songs, she takes away from them. Rihanna says she started recording Rated R one month after she was beaten by ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, and her thoughts on

that situation and the end of the relationship is the all over the CD. “Don’t understand it, blood on your hands, and still you insist on trying to tell me lies,” she sings on “Stupid in Love,” a melancholy tune that finds Rihanna moving on and asking: “Which one of us is really dumb?” Letting her emotions and feelings calmly come through is when Rihanna is at her best, like on the Justin Timberlake-assisted “Cold Case Love,” the will.i.am-produced “Photographs,” and “Fire Bomb,” a soaring rock song that is stadiumready. — Mesfin Fekadu, Associated Press

Since she first raised her arms in what now seems like a blessing on the talent show Britain’s Got Talent, revealing herself as the new queen of pop’s Island of Misfit Toys, Susan Boyle has come to mean several things to her fans: hope, the triumph of the ordinary, the reality-television embodiment of the Euro-American Dream. As a singer, though, she offers something else: relief. Boyle’s clear but warm tone and stolid phrasing turns everything it touches into a more songful version of New Age music. Boyle possesses neither an impulse to swing nor an ounce of the blues; whether she’s covering the Monkees, the Rolling Stones or Madonna, Boyle sings like she’s in a place of worship, surrounded by white walls and soft light, cooking up some chicken soup for the soul. Her unearthly calm and gently

piercing timbre are her best qualities. It’s what makes her version of the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses” so touching. Maybe that’s why the sadder songs on her album are the best. Boyle taps into the melancholy, if not the sexy languor, of Julie London on “Cry Me a River” and gives a beautiful reading of Skeeter Davis’ heartbreakingly polite “The End of the World.” There’s a lonesomeness to these versions that’s almost startling, especially compared with the overwrought emotionalism of many younger pop stars. — Ann Powers, Los Angeles Times

Associated Press It may not merit the adjective in its title, yet the animated yarn Fantastic Mr. Fox offers some of the most goofy fun you’ll have at a theater this season. With George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Bill Murray leading the top-notch voice cast, director Wes Anderson has found an ideal story and medium — stopmotion animation — to bring his cockeyed vision to the cartoon world. Brits may be annoyed at this latest Americanization of one of their beloved literary works. Yet in the hands of Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore), Roald Dahl’s illustrated children’s book gets loving treatment and a distinct handcrafted style that sets it apart from the sleek computer-generated imagery dominating animation today. This story of a poultry-thieving fox and the evil farmers waging war on him is a delightful whirlwind of mayhem and high spirits. It’s lightweight fun, yet Fantastic Mr. Fox succeeds on all levels, presenting cute and clever little varmints to charm children while offering adults merry screwball humor that slyly stretches the film’s family-friendly PG rating. Clooney provides vocals for the title character, a fox who reluctantly gives up his glamorous but perilous chicken-snatching life at the behest of his wife (voice by Streep), who wants to raise a family in peace and quiet. Years later, they have a nice new home that stretches the finances of Mr. Fox’s job as a newspaper colum-

nist for the local animal community. The Foxes have a sullen teen son (Rushmore star Jason Schwartzman) whose insecurities are compounded by a visit from his handsome, talented cousin (Anderson’s brother, Eric, also an illustrator on the film). His domicile in plain sight of the livestock and produce riches of farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean, Mr. Fox is unable to resist one last poultry caper, but his raids on all three farms bring down the mechanized wrath of the human world on all surrounding wildlife. Trapped underground with his family and a menagerie of angry neighbors, Mr. Fox marshals an inter-species rebellion against the humans that want to exterminate them. The slightly clunky, coarse animation — little puppets on miniature sets, moved in tiny increments and photographed a frame at a time — beautifully complements this shaggy-dog story. Some of the facial expressions the animators achieve with their furry puppets are as weirdly expressive as anything you’ll find in the human world, while the Wolfman-like close-ups of Mr. Fox at his most manic add to the energy of the film. The wisecracks in Anderson and co-writer Noah Baumbach’s screenplay often are hilarious, as is the slang the animals use to cuss like sailors. These animals basically are humans in fur costumes, walking upright and relating to one another in neighborly isolationism, each family and species caught up in their private concerns. Common foes and shared adversity break down their aloofness. The effect is rather like watching the kinship-building that goes on in Anderson’s live-action films as disparate blood relations and oddball strangers coalesce into something resembling a family. A perfect family, no. But definitely one you won’t mind joining for an hour and a half.

In Japan, where the blades are shiny and sharp and if the fake blood isn’t staining the lens, you’re not trying hard enough, there’ s a rich tradition of swordand-splatter pictures. That’s the tradition Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill leaned on, and it’s the foundation of Ninja Assassin, a more run-of-the-mill Hollywood ninja movie with Matrix ties. For a thousand years, “The Nine Clans” have taken in orphans from around the world and have forged them into coldblooded killing machines, lightning-quick shadow warriors who move too quickly to see and have supernatural abilities to recover from all the cuts their samurai swords, throwing stars (shuriken) and neato dagger-chains (kusarigama) inflict. Meet their price — and it hasn’t changed in a millennium, “100 pounds of gold” — and they’ll kill anybody you say. Ozuno (Sho Kosugi) trains his clan to kill without mercy — orphans beating and killing other orphans — and ignore their blood and their own agony because “pain breeds weakness. Suffering exists because weakness exists!” Raizo remembers this brutal training in flashbacks. He wears the scars of those years on that mountaintop clan hideout. But he got out. Now hiding in Berlin, he tries to help those the clan has marked for death. Naomie Harris is a Euro-police researcher who has learned too much about these secret societies. As she digs deeper, shadows shift and move into place to slice and dice her. Will Raizo awaken from his endless flashbacks in time to save her? There aren’t many surprises here — from the training flashbacks to the murder of Raizu’s one true love to the climax — a real Battle Royal. Ninja Assassin has some cool touches — the death warning to the doomed is a wax-sealed envelope with dark black (volcanic?) sand in it. However, since “cool” was the only goal, I have to say Ninja just isn’t cool enough. Rain makes a charismatic coiled spring of hero. But there’s more to making sword-and-splatter work than just shiny blades and blood. It’s got to have an edge, and the one on Ninja Assassin is dull as a butter knife.

Trashing Old Dogs is a bit like kicking a puppy. But here goes. The new comedy from some of the folks who brought us Wild Hogs is badly written and broadly acted, shamelessly manipulative and not above stopping by the toilet for a laugh or two. It’s almost certain to be a big hit. Well, the least one can do is put on bunny slippers before the puppy-kicking John Travolta and Robin Williams are professionally engaged in their roles — as lifelong friends and longtime high-rolling sports marketing business partners. They’re just not believable as friends or as the “types” they play. Travolta is Charlie — the womanizing, back slapping tell-the-client-a-funny-story half of the team. Most of the funny stories (not funny,

BTW) are about Dan, played by Williams at his most downbeat. Sad Dan may be able to close the deal, but he’s a lonely soul, divorced, pining over a one-night stand (Kelly Preston) from seven years before. The guys are on the verge of their biggest deal ever when “South Beach Vicki” (Preston) comes back into Dan’s life. She’s going to jail (environmental protest) and oh, by the way, Dan’s the father of 7-year-old twins. Would he mind watching them for a few weeks? Surprisingly, few of the jokes have to do with the guys interacting with kids, which is what you promise when you label Dan “allergic to anything under 4 feet tall.” Repeated “look at the cute grandparents” gags (Dan and Charlie are plainly fiftysomethings) and “We’re a couple — they’re our kids” gay jokes pepper the script. It’s mainly a movie about two men coping with faux fatherhood and pretending they’re not old at the same time. The funniest bits come from a mix-up in their daily pill regimen. The kids (Travolta’s lovely daughter Ella Bleu plays Emily, Conner Rayburn is

Zach) are props — seldomused props. Director Walt Becker has no time to film father-child bonding since he was squeezing in cameos by Ann-Margret, Matt Dillon, Justin Long, Rita Wilson and, in his final role, Bernie Mac as a puppet entertainer who straps Dan into a motion-control suit, maybe the un-funniest scene Mac or Williams has ever performed. We get the squishfaced Robin Williams here, one of those films where his face and body give away how deflated this material makes him feel. There’s nothing offensive here, even the trips to the toilet. But when the best thing you can say about a comedy is that it’s harmless, you know these Old Dogs have lost their bite. Utterly.

Something cold and calculating beats at the center of this ingratiating, mostly mock documentary by comedian and actress Charlyne Yi. A shy, bespectacled tomboy, Yi announces at the beginning of the movie that she doesn’t believe in love, then sets off with a film crew across the American South to interview real-life couples about their long-term, failed and budding relationships. But the faux naivete begins to grate when Yi “meets” actor Michael Cera and they embark on what purports to be their real-life relationship but is really a coy, fictionalized version thereof. Contains profanity.

Terminator: Salvation

The latest installment in the Terminator series offers towering mechanical assassins; writhing, chrome-plated centipedes; humans engaged in an epic battle, all in a movie that mixes blockbuster hysterics with moody, visual grit. Director McG picks up the pre-apocalyptic cue from T3 and drops us in 2018, with the machines of the malevolent Skynet well into their campaign against humankind. Leader-to-be of the human rebellion John Connor is an insubordinate lieutenant but has been prophesied to be the savior of humankind. The film takes itself far more seriously than its predecessors. ‘The Nutcracker’ is back in Anniston news

Need a little pick-me-up for the holidays? Forget the extra cup of cappuccino or celebration punch. For a more lasting feeling of good will, take your family to see the Alabama Ballet perform The Nutcracker on Sunday, Dec. 6. The ballet’s delightful and stirring story will keep you humming, and the event will be a memory Hervey Folsom long after the ChristArtists in Action mas presents are put away and forgotten. Patricia Smith, past chairman of the Knox Board, has seen many a Nutcracker performance. This is the 27th year the concert series has brought the production to Anniston. “I’m always impressed to see the dads bring their daughters to a Knox event, whether it’s LeAnn Rimes or Swan Lake,” she said. “And some families have made a conscious effort to come together. If the parents bring their child, it shows that child that the classical ballet is wonderful; it creates a valid impression.” She has seen newlyweds come and sit on the front row, as well as dating couples at past Nutcrackers. And there’s a little boy she’s seen for four years at The Sugar Plum party after the ballet. “His mother said that he tells her that he wants to come again every year,” Smith said. Pam McKenzie, ticket chairman, said she sells tickets to lots of repeat viewers each year. “With so many people, it’s a family tradition,” McKenzie said. And, she added, the ballet often instills an interest in taking dance classes for lots of children. The Alabama Ballet is a highly professional company, Smith said, and the area children who have parts in The Nutcracker have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Alabama Ballet is one of six companies in the world — and the only one in the

Southeast — that performs the George Balanchine choreography. This version, which meets the standards of the Balanchine Trust, is the one made famous by the New York City Ballet. Balanchine, who was trained with the Saint Petersburg Imperial Ballet, among other schools of the dance, founded the New York City Ballet with his partner Lincoln Kirstein. The company made its debut Oct. 11, 1948. Balanchine fused his techniques with American rhythm and styles, and is known for giving new importance to ballet as an art form in the United States. As long as The Nutcracker entertains young and old here, it will provide a chance to revisit Clara, Fritz, the Nutcracker (which is a toy soldier that cracks nuts when they are put in his mouth), the Nutcracker Prince, The Sugar Plum Fairy, the Mouse King and Councillor Drosselmeyer, a mysterious but kindly old man who makes toys. As the curtain rises, Town Council President Silberhaus and his wife are busy with preparations for a Christmas Eve party for their children and neighbors. When the children come in, merriment, mischief and marching lead on to a captivating children’s tale about young Clara and her dream about a Nutcracker Prince, a fierce battle against a mouse army, and a journey to distant enchanted lands with her prince. One of the strange things that happen after midnight in the story is the growing of the Christmas tree. The music for the ballet, written by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, enhances and portrays this visual with 48 bars of notes with a grandiose crescendo. Another musical highlight is the music for Dance of the Mirlitons; the rushing strings of the violin to a higher register almost compare the leaps of the dancers. Tchaikovsky considered himself Russian in the full sense of the word, but he fused Russian and international elements to produce intensely passionate music, according to Tchaikovsky’s Ballets by Roland John Wiley. Tchaikovsky wrote the score for The Nutcracker in 1892 fresh from

his great composing success in The Sleeping Beauty. For his special effects he asked a friend to order a new orchestral instrument, the celesta, which he discovered in Paris, but requested “that no other person should see” it until it is used first in The Nutcracker. His effort, it seems, was worthwhile, because the small keyboard produced silvery sounds and was a significant addition to the musical image sounds. It’s quality entertainment, but it doesn’t end with seeing the ballet, Smith pointed out. “It’s the entire event,” she said. She urges viewers to visit the Nutcracker Shoppe and the bake sale, and plan to go to the Sugar Plum Party where the children meet the professional dancers. And the rewards of seeing the ballet are many. “It puts you in a good mood for the holidays,” she promises. The performance takes place at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Anniston Performing Arts Center in Anniston High School. Ticket are $20 for adults, $12 for children and reserved seating is $30. New ‘Mario Bros.’ is best yet Mario has always been tops in my gaming heart. From “Super Mario Bros.” to “Super Mario Galaxy,” the plumber’s adventures always make for an enjoyable ride. “New Super Mario Bros. Wii” takes the hero back to his side-scrolling days with one of his best quests yet. Anyone who enjoyed “Super Mario Bros. 3” and “Super Mario World” will fall in love with this title at first sight. “NSMBW” plays very similar to these classics with extraordinary new levels and power-ups. Speaking of power-ups, the penguin suit might be the coolest Mario enhancement ever. It allows for easy movement Chris along cold surfaces, ice-based Pittman fireballs to freeze enemies Pushing Buttons and easier swimming while in water. The propeller suit would be a close second. This ingenious device spins Mario through the skies with a simple flick of the Wii remote. It plays an integral role in collecting the star coins that are hidden throughout each level. The level design in each of the game’s initial eight worlds is simply fantastic. I would even go so far to say that it’s the best in any Mario game to date. Each level plays off the theme of the current world. For instance, the ice world levels have slippery surfaces that make critical jumps all the harder. The variety in each of the levels is quite noticeable. When you’ve played through a level, chances are you won’t play anything like it again. This cranks the difficulty up a bit, which is always a good thing. There are tons of opportunities to rack up multiple extra lives on many of the game’s levels. This provides a good balance for both the skilled gamer and the novice player. The Koopa kids make their return and serve as the mid-boss and final boss to each of the first seven worlds. The first battle is fairly traditional, but they

use some trickery in the second encounter. There are other boss fights that take place at specific points in the game. This includes a mammoth finale that is without a doubt my favorite boss fight in Mario history. You’ll still have plenty to do once the credits roll. Each level features three star coins that can be used for two different things once collected. The main use for the coins would spoil a major part of the game, so I’ll leave that for you to find out. The coins also serve as the currency needed to unlock special videos that show shortcuts, hidden exits and infinite lives opportunities throughout the game. Many of the super skill videos need to be seen to be believed. I didn’t get a chance to try out the full array of multiplayer modes, but I was surprisingly pleased with what I did play. The action can get quite a bit chaotic with multiple people on screen, but you can use this as an advantage. Competitive multiplayer is also available if you would rather butt heads with your friends. The only downside would be the lack of online play. That would have made the multiplayer tops on the console and would complete an otherwise flawless experience. I was quite disappointed when I watched Nintendo announce the game during their media briefing in early June. A Mario game that seemed to be built on a multiplayer focus was not pleasing news to my ears. However, Nintendo most certainly had the single player gamer in mind as “NSMBW” is one of the best platformers I have ever played. It’s definitely my favorite game of the year. Kudos to Nintendo for making a traditional sidescrolling Mario game in addition to a 3-D adventure in “Super Mario Galaxy 2.” Each title complements the other and proves that Mario is still the king of video games. “New Super Mario Bros. Wii” gets five buttons out of five.

The role-playing fantasy has been a staple of electronic gaming since the 1970s, when students cobbled together interactive quests on university mainframes. But the genre has fallen out of favor in recent years, overtaken by grittier dramas like the “Grand Theft Auto” and “Call of Duty” franchises. “Dragon Age: Origins” (Electronic Arts, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, $59.99) tries to bring some of that grit to the fantasy roleplaying game. In its quasi-medieval kingdom, Ferelden, the streets are muddy and the buildings are crumbling. You’re more likely to meet a beggar or a thief than an honorable knight, and most of the “nobles” you encounter are hopelessly corrupt. Still, the folks at BioWare, who also created the landmark RPG “Baldur’s Gate,” know their fantasy. So you have a motley team of humans, dwarves and elves teaming up against a worldthreatening evil force. You have warriors, rogues and mages. You have demons, ogres and, of course, dragons. At the beginning, “Dragon Age” lets you pick your gender, race and career path; I went female rogue elf. Depending on your choices, you live through one of six origin stories, but you’re eventually recruited in the Grey Wardens, an elite squad dedicated to eliminating the darkspawn threat. It’s not as simple as it sounds. To rally the citizens of Ferelden, you need to dethrone a corrupt leader, hold off a civil war and unite diverse factions. And kill thousands of monsters. In battle, you control your warden and up to three other characters. You can quickly switch between fighters, but the action is more manageable if you program them beforehand to behave in certain ways (like, say, ganging up on the strongest enemy). It’s complicated — you’ll spend a lot of time tinkering with your companions’ tactical menus — but satisfying when you finally get the best of your first dragon. Indeed, “Dragon Age” is probably too complicated for gamers who just want to jump in and brawl. To succeed you have to learn your way around an array of maps, menus and inventory screens. It’s not a good game for RPG newcomers; as a veteran, I found it quite challenging even at its “normal” difficulty level. Also, you need a lot of time on your hands. Finishing the main story takes about 60 hours, and you can add another 20 hours or so if you pursue all the side missions. And there are plenty of game-changing choices along the way; I generally tried to act like a nice elf throughout, but I wonder how the story would have changed if I’d been more of a jerk. With so much to see, Ferelden is one of the most vivid, thoroughly realized worlds ever seen in a video game. And with so much to do, “Dragon Age” delivers more for your money than just about any other game on the market.

The creative forces behind Yes, Virginia know they face daunting odds. At this time every year, TV programmers serve up shiny, new holiday-themed fare, only to have viewers discard most of it like crumpled wads of gift wrap. When it comes to seasonal fare, the stuff that’s new rarely generates the same interest as the tried-and-true. “It’s tough to break through the crowd,” says Matt MacDonald, a producer for Yes, Virginia, which debuts Dec. 11 on CBS. “A lot of specials in recent years have failed to stick around. Everyone seems to love the classics from the 1960s.” He’s referring to holiday hall-of-famers such as A Charlie Brown Christmas and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer — timeless favorites that still cast a powerful yuletide spell. Yes, Virginia, featuring the voice talents of Neil Patrick Harris, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Alfred Molina, is one of this season’s “rookies” trying to seize some attention. It’s a computeranimated offering that revisits the late 1800s tale of little Virginia O’Hanlon, who wonders if Santa Claus really exists. She eventually writes a letter to the New York Sun newspaper, which responded with an editorial that has become part of Christmas lore. The story received TV treatment for a 1974 special, but MacDonald and his collaborators thought it was worth telling again. “We anchored it in reality, but we didn’t try to make it too hip or too modern,” he says. “We don’t want it to be something that has its day and is gone. Twenty years down the road, we’d love to be right there with Charlie Brown and Rudolph.” Here’s a rundown of some of television’s prime-time holiday highlights. Fame is just a kids’ game on television By Denise Martin

HOLLYWOOD — In the middle of everything is a pool flanked by beach chairs under umbrellas, palm trees, actresses, publicists and hangers-on. Four good-looking young guys dressed in Hollywood wear — skinny jeans, jackets with collars up — are posing for photographers. This isn’t a scene out of HBO’s Entourage. This is Nickelodeon, a kids’ channel best known for the cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants, introducing the media to the stars of its new comedy Big Time Rush. The show, which premieres Saturday, revolves around a group of Minnesota teenagers, one of whom convinces a talent scout that he and his friends have the makings of a charttopping boy band. Right now, the actors are answering questions on set in the fictitious Palmwoods complex of Los Angeles, a reference to the Oakwood apartments where young actors take up residence. Kendall Schmidt, wearing a beanie, is saying the big difference between Entourage and Big Time Rush, aside from the latter’s G rating, is that “everyone in the group is talented, not just one guy. Everyone becomes famous.” But Entourage — even a G-rated Entourage — for 11-year-olds? Big Time Rush is just one example in a growing list of kid shows selling show-biz fantasies to children. Children’s TV has long flirted with the competition for fame (The Mickey Mouse Club, anyone?) and the lure of achieving celebrity at a young age has juiced programming across the board in recent years, with American Idol, Gossip Girl, and reality hits The Hills and Keeping Up With the Kardashians. But the genre is stronger than ever now and more fixated on the perks of the glamorous Hollywood lifestyle as Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel compete for the youngest audiences. Disney airs Hannah Montana, Jonas, a comedy about rock trio the Jonas Brothers, and Sonny With a Chance, starring Demi Lovato as a budding actress and lead of her own TV series. Now Nickelodeon is putting its spin on celebrity. After Big Time Rush debuts this week, the channel early in 2010 will launch Victorious, with 16year-old Victoria Justice as a girl-nextdoor type whose hidden talents for singing and dancing are discovered, landing her in a performing arts school where the students get parts in films and are courted by music producers.

These shows teach that fame can be a double-edged sword, of course — Hannah and the Jonas Brothers have regular run-ins with overly zealous fans and try their best to lead “normal lives” — but they’re also wish fulfillment at a time when tabloid dreams are ubiquitous. For proof, look no further than The Hills reality TV villains Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, out now promoting their new advice book, How to Be Famous. Nickelodeon’s iCarly, 2009’s mostwatched TV show among kids 2 to 11, according to the Nielsen Co., is about a girl who has attained a certain level of celebrity by producing and starring in her own Web series. Just a few years ago, by contrast, the channel’s hits involved the more traditional pains of not being popular (Unfabulous), adolescent sibling rivalry (Drake & Josh) and surviving school (Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide). Part of the phenomenon stems from the kids’ networks discovering big ancillary bucks to be made in the music business. Hannah star Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers are successful pop acts with No. 1 albums and huge touring business (both are signed to Disney’s Hollywood Records), while Sonny’s Lovato has released two solo albums. Nickelodeon’s Big Time Rush and Victorious were developed after the network struck a partnership with Columbia/Epic Label Group to produce shows that would revolve around original music.

The strategy is working for Disney Channel, which is winding down its most-watched year ever. In fact, kids’ TV is one thriving area of programming amid declining ratings for the broadcast networks’ prime-time shows. Also greeting the media alongside the Big Time Rush guys, Victorious’ Victoria Justice is chatting up reporters. She says she was bitten by the acting bug after “seeing a Pringles commercial when I was, like, 8 and going, ‘Mommy, I can do that! I wanna be on TV!’ ” Seeing a potential heir to Cyrus’ throne, the New York Post has already run a profile of the starlet, previously a regular on Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101. Whether hawking the lifestyles of the rich, young and famous to kids is fair game for entertainment channels — both Nickelodeon and Disney Channel target kids 2 to 11 and tweens 9 to 14 — depends on how it is presented within the shows, producers say. “If there is anything I’ve learned about kids today — and I’m not saying this is good or bad — it’s that they all want to be stars,” said Dan Schneider, the creator of iCarly and Victorious who has spent over a decade producing children’s shows. Victorious is his seventh for Nickelodeon. “I’m not saying it wouldn’t be nice if more of them wanted to be teachers and social workers; it would be. But at least in Victorious, you see a world where they’re all working on the talent part.” ppp

Cohn sees no problem in tapping into a trend that’s “timely and juicy and delicious.” “Every kid thinks they’re five minutes away and one lucky circumstance from being famous,” she said. “We’ve always responded to what’s out there in the cultural zeitgeist and spin it Nickelodeon style,” adding how iCarly in 2007 jumped on the YouTube phenomenon. But Deborah Linebarger, director of the Children’s Media Lab at the University of Pennsylvania, said the issue is not so much about wanting to be splashed on the cover of Us Weekly as it is about “the unrealistic pressure wanting to be famous puts on such a young age group.” “Of course, there is a sense of escapism in these shows, which can be charming and magical, and that’s fine. But there’s also this sense that such achievements are possible, especially if you’re good-looking, when statistically they really aren’t,” Linebarger said. While shows like Gossip Girl are targeted at young adults, “Nick’s viewers are at a stage when they’re developing their sense of self and are particularly vulnerable to these images,” she said. Brent Poer, managing director of the West Coast offices of ad-buying company MediaVest, said that because of “YouTube and digital technology and social networks, the idea of fame has changed. It’s a lot easier to become ‘famous.’ ” But he also defends the trend: “It’s very hard to engage a younger audience today without some hooks. Disney’s shows aren’t so much about the industry as they are about dancing and singing and performing,” Poer said. “They still tell stories that have morals; it’s just a lot easier for a kid to swallow the lesson with that backdrop. Otherwise, it’s an after-school special.” Gary Marsh, president of entertainment for Disney Channels Worldwide, reasoned that “the setting for our storytelling is far less important than the story we tell in that setting.” That said, the network’s research shows “music and entertainment are a huge part of kids’ lives — and they have tremendous social currency. So it’s not surprising that they also play a part in some of the series and movies that we create.” Schneider said he’s ambivalent about encouraging the parents of children who ask him how to break into the business. “On the one hand, every parent thinks their kid has it. Most of them don’t.”

Doug Rose, the network’s vice president of programming and marketing. “This year, and we’ve been planning on this for many months, we really expect to join the fray with the other retailers,” Rose said. QVC is hoping for a “Black Friday” of its own. Hurt by the same recession that affected other retailers last year, QVC’s fourth quarter revenue in 2008 was down 8 percent from the previous year. So far this year revenue has been essentially flat, although the value of the items that QVC is selling is down slightly. The network generally offers one “special value” item to customers each day. For “Black Friday” coverage, which starts at 7 p.m. on Thanksgiving, there will be three. Every hour, there will be a specially priced offer, and there will be five hours of gifts that have never been available before on the network, QVC said. Rival HSN, which has also been flat in sales this year, mailed one million gift guides for the first time to people who have bought things through the network in the past. It is also offering specially-priced items over the Thanksgiving weekend, although that’s not a shift from what it has done in the past. HSN also had a Get Ready for the Holidays programming theme for the first week of November, for people who wanted advice on cooking and decorating. HSN has a little more than half QVC’s sales domestically. James, a former radio disc jockey, said the closest thing he’s come to his upcoming 28-hour marathon is hosting radiothons for about half the time. He’s convinced his family to have an early Thanksgiving dinner and hopes the turkey will let him have a long nap before he goes to QVC’s Pennsylvania studio. “There’s going to be coffee — a lot of coffee,” he said.
