The great purge of 2009 How well do you know your hundreds of Facebook friends? I mean, really know them? Would you let them look after your child? Your dog? Would you trust them with your Dan secrets? Whisenhunt Would Pushing Buttons you recognize them if you saw them on the street? How do you know them in the first place? I started ticking off these questions recently as I axed about 60 people from my Facebook friends list. I’m now running a list at a lean 184. It probably wouldn’t hurt if I cut a few more. I wasn’t cleaning house to be petty or cruel. I was doing it because I didn’t have answers to these questions. At its best, Facebook is an easy way to be a good friend. You can keep track of people you care about, send them birthday well wishes, keep abreast of their latest tragedy. All of that is quite handy. Yet, I’ve had the disconcerting feeling lately that people who follow our Facebook, Twitter and other social networking accounts may not be all that they seem. I’m sure there are people out there who do nothing but spend their time trying to dig up dirt on people based on what they post on their profiles. Obviously, people who do this sort of thing are beneath contempt. And even as I say that, I know they surely thrive among us and are sometimes even rewarded for their behavior. The problem then, is telling who is your friend and who is about to kick you

down the stairs. You hear about it all the time; someone gets fired for a Twitter post. Someone’s house gets robbed because they put the details of their two-week vacation on Facebook and have their address on their profiles. When those stories crop up, you have to ask yourself: Are all 500 of the people on your friends list really your friend? Or do they mean you harm? Ask yourself: Can I trust the people who claim to be my friends? Are my relationships with them meaningful in a personal setting? Or am I just racking up numbers on my personal list of friends so I can stroke my own ego? Don’t have an answer? I do. It’s called the “remove from friends” feature. You can also set up limited profiles so random people can not view your personal information unless they are on your friends list. I highly recommend it. There has never been a better time to take stock; with the economy the way it is, few of us can afford to lose what little we have. Know who is good to you; question the rest.

Google Wave I’ve been playing with the Google Wave feature, which allows people to “communicate and collaborate” in real time. I’m sure there are benefits to it that I’m not seeing, but at the moment, it strikes me as a free program for online meetings. Whatever it is, everyone is doing it and I’m giving it a try and learning more about it. It’s a little buggy, but I’m sure it will come to be every bit as convenient and universal as everything else Google makes. I’ve got a few invites left if you want one. ‘Avatar’ video game to expand film’s alien world By DERRIK J. LANG Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — James Cameron was thinking beyond the big screen when he created the alien world of Pandora. The Titanic director worked in tandem with video game developer Ubisoft Montreal on the game based on his upcoming sci-fi epic Avatar. Opening Dec. 18, the film stars Sam Worthington as a paralyzed human soldier who takes on the form of an exotic blue-skinned alien species called Na’vi on their home world Pandora, a remote paradise teaming with freaky flora and fauna. “James Cameron did something really smart,” said Kevin Shortt, story designer of “Avatar: The Game.” “When he started preproduction on the movie threeand-a-half years ago, he said, ‘I want a game. I know I want a game. I want them working on it right now.’ Because, what often happens is they make the movie, and then somebody says, ‘Hey, let’s tack on a game.”’ In a plot that diverges from the film’s story line, players can portray either a blade-wielding member of the Na’vi or a gun-toting human soldier for the Resources Development Administration, a massive organization that mines Pandora’s rare natural

resources. The game’s parallel narratives explore the implications of aligning with either the Na’vi or RDA. “Let’s face it,” Cameron said at the Electronic Entertainment Expo earlier this year. “Games derived from movies, historically, some of them have kind of sucked. And I didn’t want Avatar — I didn’t want anything associated with Avatar — to suck. So I proposed to Ubisoft this theory that the game should not be a slave to the movie.” Because “Avatar: The Game” is scheduled for release on Dec. 1 — over two weeks before the movie opens — dedicated fans can absorb details about Cameron’s otherworldly creation before they see the film. That includes taking a peek at the game’s comprehensive database of characters, creatures, vehicles and other minutia that will unravel as players progress. “It’s not just a repeat of the story,” said Shortt, who worked also on the “Lost: Via Domus” game. “It’s a rich, full experience itself that builds on the world that Cameron already created. We’ve got our Pandorapedia, which gives all these extra details for fans that they’re not going to get anywhere else. This is the first place you’re going to get them.”

The busy holiday season is here, which means you have shopping to do, dinners to prepare and in-laws to avoid. Somewhere in there, the studios hope, you’ll find time to see a movie. Which to choose? Fox is hoping it will be Avatar (opening Dec. 18), the sci-fi adventure from James Cameron with a reportedly humongous budget of $500 million. It’s already the most-talked-about film of the year, though whether it will connect with audiences remains to be seen. Its star, Sam Worthington, is a relative unknown, and its reliance on computer-animated actors could be a liability rather than a draw — just ask Robert Zemeckis, who replaced humans with pixels in Disney’s A Christmas Carol and Beowulf, both box-office disappointments. That means there’s room for competition. Also on Dec. 18 comes Nine, a musical from director Rob Marshall (of the Oscar-winning Chicago) with an A-list cast that includes Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman and Penelope Cruz. On Christmas, Warner Bros. will unleash Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr. sexing up the fusty fictional sleuth. And Fox will go up against itself Dec. 23 by releasing Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel five days after Avatar. For more serious-minded filmgoers, the studios are also rolling out several movies based on novels, including Cormac McCarthy’s post-apocalypse drama The Road, Walter Kirn’s semicomedic Up in the Air (Dec. 4) and Alice Sebold’s thriller The Lovely Bones (Dec. 11). Even long-dead writers Christopher Isherwood and Tennessee Williams have new movies coming out. BOSTON — An initiative to encourage healthy teen relationships says songs by Jamie Foxx and Lady Gaga are the musical equivalent of junk food. A teen panel working with the Boston Public Health Commission has determined that their songs are among the top 10 with “unhealthy relationship ingredients.” The commission on Tuesday released its list based on a “nutrition label” rating popular songs on healthy relationship themes. The “Sound Relationships Nutrition Label” was developed by 14 teens after they attended a sevenweek commission-sponsored institute on healthy relationship promotion and teen dating violence prevention. During the seven-week program, teens were also taught to evaluate music based on themes of power, control, equality and gender roles. The teens then developed their list after analyzing songs from Billboard’s “Hot 100” chart. Mario’s “Break Up” featuring Gucci Man and Sean Garrett and Jamie Foxx’s “Blame It” featuring T-Pain topped the list for the most unhealthy relationship songs of 2009. Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and Pitbull’s “Hotel Room Service” were also listed. Among the teen panel’s top 10 songs with healthy themes: “Miss Independent” by Ne-Yo and “Meet Me Halfway” by the Black Eyed Peas. Shaquilla Terry, 15, of Boston, a teen panel member, said it was important for listeners to go beyond the songs’ beats and listen to the lyrics. The commission says its program aims to teach teens how to evaluate popular media, and help parents talk to teens about healthy relationships. Commission officials also said the label invites consumers to become song lyric nutritionists by helping them identify positive and negative messages about relationships in songs. “We aren’t telling people what they should or should not be listening to,” Barbara Ferrer, the commission’s executive director, said in a statement. “We are giving them a tool that will help them make an informed choice about what they put in their bodies.” In addition to the label, the commission also plans to released a lesson plan for teachers. Jack Perricone, chair of the songwriting department at the Berklee College of Music, said pop songs generally allow listeners to get away from the bad news of the day. But he said pop music, by its very nature, is very repetitive, and sometimes if songs have negative messages, those repetitive messages can get inside teens’ heads. “Some (artists) play up the bad boy image and put out negative images as a way to be commercially successful,” said Perricone, who was not affiliated with the commission. “But then they have to deal with the moral implications.”

Younger jazz players are often torn between tradition and the sounds of the street. Pianist Robert Glasper explores this duality on his Blue Note release, which investigates a jazz trio in its first half and more of a hip-hop vibe in the second. Neither side is so extreme as to exclude the other. And both share many connections. Glasper is such an inventive player

that calling his first focus “mainstream” is a disservice. The tunes are melodic and mesmerizing with a hidden sense of urgency. Tunes waft in and out a la hiphop. And chances are taken. Boyz II Men’s new album not much to ‘Love’ Boyz II Men Love

Like Glee only warmer and less vanilla, Boyz II Men, Philly’s cherished R&B hitmakers, have spent several seasons covering R&B classics in 2004’s Throwback and 2007’s Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville U.S.A. The trio (Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman), which began in 1988, is now missing a bass voice (Michael McCary), but the musky songs and pliable rhythms that filled those outings made up for BIIM’s missing bottom. Not this time. With producer/American Idol-er Randy Jackson at the wheel, the local vocal trio steer into lame pop with songs decent (the Beatles’ “In My Life”), bombastic (”Open Arms” by Journey, a band in which Jackson spent time), and dunderheadedly dull (Chicago’s “If You Leave Me Now”). While the trio’s dynamics on the heart-

broken soul/ C&W hit “Misty Blue” are lush and dreamy, it’s unimaginable they’d be unimaginative enough to redo the overrated, overcooked “Time After Time” or the Goo Goo Dolls’ limp “Iris,” into neither of which do they breathe life. Blame producer Jackson. Surely, having his senses bludgeoned by countless pitiful vocalists repeating pop’s worst for mass consumption and competition have bled his soul dry and left his ears deaf to what those who can sing, should. —A.D. ‘Glitter and Doom’ is classic Tom Waits Tom Waits Glitter and Doom Live

It’s been a long, long time since Tom Waits has come to Philly, so long that this fan traveled to Atlanta for a chance to see him a couple of years ago. The show was incredible: Waits was commanding, hilarious, heartfelt and theatrical, and it was captivating to hear that bullfrog voice rumbling out of the scarecrowlike figure on stage. Glitter and Doom Live documents last year’s brief tour (Waits is parsimonious with his touring schedule), drawing mainly from 1992’s Bone Machine and later so as not to overlap with 1988’s superior “Big Time,” his previous live album. It’s a solid keepsake, but it’s nearly nonessential. This is Waits in all his guttural glory with little of his sentimental subtlety,

and only a few songs — “Metropolitan Glide,” “Such a Scream” — rival their studio versions. But Glitter and Doom deserves extra credit for Tom Tales, a second CD of excerpts from his inter-song monologues. It’s an uproarious comedy set of non sequiturs about vultures, rats, barnacles, and ostriches, about the etymologies of bamboozled and dead ringers, and about strange “facts” regarding Sarah Bernhardt, Neil Armstrong and Spam. —Steve Klinge, MCT

In Jim Sheridan’s Brothers, it feels like the film’s three young stars are playing house. Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal have all previously played memorable teenage characters and each has maintained a youthfulness into their late 20s and 30s. Here, they star in a suburban, domestic drama that extends all the way to Afghanistan. Maguire is Captain Sam Cahill, a decorated Marine and husband to his high school sweetheart, Grace (Portman), with whom he has two daughters. Gyllenhaal is Sam’s brother, Tommy, the black sheep of the family who, at the movie’s start, is just getting out of prison. When Sam ships out to Afghanistan, he’s presumed dead after a fiery helicopter crash. Grace is heartbroken from the loss, but finds support in a maturing Tommy. He helps around the house, plays with the kids and begins to have feelings for Grace. All the while, we know Sam is not dead and has been taken prisoner. Under threat of death, he’s forced to commit an unspeakable sin, an incident that damages and haunts him when he returns to his previously idyllic family life. The possibility that his brother and his wife have become romantically involved causes him to explode in jealousy. Brothers is a remake of Susanne Bier’s 2004 Danish film Brodre, in which the three main characters were slightly older. But the youth of Brothers isn’t a knock on the film. On the contrary, it makes it more realistic given the thousands of fresh-faced soldiers so often sent to war. It’s one of the few differences between Sheridan’s remake and the original. It’s a simple story and Brodre had an affecting, lyrical quality, a poetry lacking in Sheridan’s sleeker,

Staying almost scene-for-scene with the original, Sheridan (My Left Foot, In America) weaves the dual story lines — at home and in Afghanistan — building the tension for the inevitable clash between the separate worlds. Brothers has aspirations for Deer Hunter territory — a dramatic examination of the cost blue-collar families pay for war. Where Deer Hunter was epic in its reach, Brothers feels as though it never really leaves the front yard. When Sam returns home, he might as well be an alien. He’s creepy and bug-eyed with post-traumatic mania, nearly unrecognizable to his family. Gyllenhaal is perhaps too likable for his character. We believe his caring, responsible uncle, but not his recent history as a drunk convict. By distilling the story of war down

to a single family, Brothers makes an impossibly complex story of war understandable and human. But missed are opportunities to expand the film, such as with Sam and Tommy’s father, an alcoholic veteran played by Sam Shepherd. Portman is mostly left to bounce between Sam and Tommy. Constantly either longing for her husband or anxious for his well-being, she rings true as a military mother full of worry and caring. In the end, Brothers hopes that healing can happen through confession and understanding. Ultimately, it’s the need for the home front to know the pain of its sons and daughters fighting abroad. It’s a worthy lesson and the aspiration of Brothers is noble. But it can’t preserve the intimacy of the original film, and the loosened characters slide into cliche.

Everybody’s Fine is a quiet, light study in family dysfunction, a comedy-drama with no heroes or villains, just sad people who aren’t necessarily telling the truth when somebody asks them, “Are you happy?” That’s become an important question to Frank Goode (Robert DeNiro), a lonely, widowed retiree whose four adult children won’t make the time to visit now that Mom has died. Frank’s life was spent at the grindstone — coating telephone and electrical cables, something he’s proud to point out on telephone poles to strangers. That’s because those miles and miles of cable and the lung disease Frank got from the work put his kids in a position to do more interesting things for a living. “A lotta cable,” he says of this one’s orchestral career or that one’s designer home. Frank resolves to drop in on each of the four — surprise visits. They tell him “everybody’s fine” on those rare occasions he gets each of them on the phone. But he wants the truth Kirk Jones’ movie never finds a tone that it’s comfortable with as Frank amusingly bores fellow train and bus travelers with tales of his work and his family. Fellow retirees commiserate on kids who don’t appreciate the sacrifice the parents had to make to get them where they are. Contrast that with each visit to his offspring — Kate Beckinsale in Chicago, Drew Barrymore in Las Vegas, Sam Rockwell in Denver. Dad observes what the kids might have once told Mom, but not him. The patient pace and subtle disappointment the kids feel about their lives, disappointment that they worry will be shared by Dad, makes for a movie of no cathartic confrontations. A contrived and melodramatic third act seems out of character and abrupt. And truthfully, there’s little novel about the story of an aged parent trying to right the wrongs of his childrearing years. But DeNiro, leaving his Meet the Parents comic ogre persona to Ben Stiller, makes Frank a man we neither pity nor blame, a gruff dad who remembers his stern past with a wince. His winning, thoughtful performance and matching work from those cast as his kids (each lifting his or her game) make this remake of Guiseppe Tornatore’s 1990 Italian dramedy a tolerably sober alternative to holiday froth at the mutliplex.

dvd releases coming dec. 8 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Love potions, common-room snogging, adolescent heartbreak. It’s hard to blame the film’s screenwriter Steve Kloves or director David Yates for focusing on the romance. After all, as young-adult adventures go, the sixth book in the Harry Potter series is awfully light on the adventure. The three leads, Daniel Radcliffe (Harry), Rupert Grint (Ron) and Emma Watson (Hermione), give their most charming performances to date. Ron is particularly funny under the addling effects of a love potion, and Hermione is sad and sweet in a moment of romantic disillusionment. All of which is to say that the film, with its romantic triangle (square? pentagon?), its gorgeous production design and its bang-up final action sequence, might be the most enjoyable Harry Potter movie yet for people who don’t particularly care about Potter movies. Whether die-hard fans of the books will love it is another story. Contains scary images, violence, language and mild sensuality. — The Washington Post

Fox announced Tuesday that the hit singing contest, which last year produced a battle between winner Kris Allen and runner-up Adam Lambert, will return Tuesday, Jan. 12, and Wednesday, Jan. 13. This year’s big change: Paula Abdul is out as judge and Ellen DeGeneres is in. Fox also announced that the drama 24 will return with a pair of two-hour episodes airing Jan. 17 and 18, and that Glee will take a break after its Dec. 9 episode, returning April 13 to follow American Idol. Before that, the coveted post-Idol spot will go Our Little Genius, a new series that tests the knowledge of gifted children and debuts Jan. 13.

Michael Jackson’s ‘This Is It’ out on DVD in January NEW YORK — Michael Jackson’s This Is It, a film about the King of Pop’s final rehearsals before his death, will be released on DVD on Jan. 26, 2010. The DVD release was announced Monday by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. This Is It captures Jackson’s final performances as he rehearsed for his concerts in London. He died June 25, just weeks before his marathon of 50 concerts was to begin. The DVD includes two documentaries, “Staging the Return: Beyond the Show” and “Staging the Return: The Adventure Begins,” which highlight Jackson as he prepared for the concerts. The film has grossed more than $70 million in the United States.

Bob Dylan Christmas In The Heart

Do you hear what I hear? Bob Dylan singing Christmas carols?! Ho ho ho. The first reaction is this must be a joke. At age 68, rock’s greatest troubadour remains a formidable force, as several fine recent albums have shown. But Dylan’s also a Jew who declared himself born again at one point but never recorded a Christmas album — until now. And indeed, Christmas In The Heart is pretty funny, with the toll of braying “How does it feel?” for 45 years evident throughout. Dylan’s vocals are wobbly, froggy, choppy, strained, strangled and off-key, making it easy to forget he might be the most influential, most imitated singer ever. Here his voice could clear a room, and it’s even more jarring because he’s backed by a chorus of Ray Conniff-style crooners. Still, this is Bob Dylan, and fans will love it — at least some of it. The secular tunes are best, especially a trio of obscurities. “The Christmas Blues” swings in the style of Dylan’s recent albums. The bouncy, accordion-driven “Must Be Santa” includes this classic Dylanesque couplet: “Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen; Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon.” And the Hawaiian tune “Christmas Island” is sung with ardor appropriate for someone from Minnesota. — Steven Wine, Associated Press

For anyone who’s ever turned on their heart light, drank red, red wine or sang along to “Sweet Caroline,” Neil Diamond’s voice is like that of an old friend, so he brings a natural warmth to holiday music. On his third Christmas CD, A Cherry Cherry Christmas, Diamond

sprinkles a few original songs into a new collection of classics. He cleverly works the names of his past hits into the hopeful title track. But holiday party guests — and anyone who spent time in the 1960s, ’70s or ’80s — will find themselves singing along with Diamond on Christmas classics such as “Sleigh Ride” and “The Christmas Song.” He gets jazzy on “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and adds ’50s-style harmonies to “White Christmas.” “Winter Wonderland” becomes a rock song. “Deck the Halls/We Wish You a Merry Christmas” gets a capella, Christmas-carol treatment. He even covers Adam Sandler’s “The Chanukah Song” and inserts a real rock ’n’ roll guitar solo into the silly ditty about famous Jews (like Diamond himself). Diamond sounds like Americana, and his holiday CD is like Christmas dinner: Warm, comforting and just what you expect. — Sandy Cohen, Associated Press

Sugarland Gold and Green

Knocking out a Christmas album should have been a lock for the consummately affable country duo Sugarland with their new yuletide release, Gold and Green. Sugarland is the George Foreman grill of country music. No rough edges. Just solid performance for the price. But they have a hard time convincing they listener they really care here. It sounds like they did this album for no other reason than, well, they were expected to. Take their rendition of “Holly Jolly Christmas.” Not an ounce of Sugarland breaks through the Johnny Marks classic. Guitarist Kristian Bush takes the lead vocals on this one, but shouldn’t have. I found myself straining to hear the real lead singer Jennifer Nettles’ gorgeous back-up voice instead. There is barely a Sugarland stamp of style to be found on Gold and Green. There is a way to do a Christmas album and have it feel relevant. Sugarland elected not to make that album. The only bright spot here is “Coming Home,” and original Sugarland tune that steals the show. It has some country

church revival-styled stops and starts, and a beautifully slow pace that gives Nettles room to tug at your heart with her voice. — Ron Harris, Associated Press

David Archuleta Christmas from the Heart

David Archuleta may be a teenager but he’s well suited for classic holiday songs like “Silent Night” and “Ave Maria.” The former American Idol runner-up sings those songs and more on his new holiday CD Christmas from the Heart. There’s a plethora of holiday music out there with musicians recording holiday music just because, but Archuleta’s recording makes sense. He’s got a powerful, soulful voice that’s beyond his years. If you’re looking to add to your holiday music collection or get into the spirit of the season, this CD is a good choice. — Alicia Rancilio, Associated Press

Kathy Griffin Suckin It For the Holidays

Kathy Griffin’s comedy CD Suckin’ It for the Holidays sticks to the format that’s made her successful by serving up a number of jokes at the expense of celebrities. Just don’t expect her act to be very festive. The CD may be released in time for the holiday season but there are no real holiday jokes in the act. The real problem with the CD is if you’re a big Kathy Griffin fan and have seen her perform more than once, you may already be familiar with some of the jokes (like about the “Real Housewives” and Suze Orman). The best jokes are about Justin Timberlake, T.I., and Gayle King. While the CD is entertaining, it’s not Griffin’s best work. If you’re looking to get a gift for a Griffin fan, get her recently released memoir instead. — Alicia Rancilio, Associated Press

The omnipresent diva garnered the most Grammy nominations on Wednesday night with 10 nods, including nominations for album of the year for I Am ... Sasha Fierce, song of the year for her anthem “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” and record of the year for Halo. Country crossover sensation Taylor Swift — the year’s best-selling artist outside of the late Michael Jackson — wasn’t far behind Beyonce. The 19-year-old got eight nominations, including album of the year for her multiplatinum sophomore disc Fearless, as well as song and record of the year for her hit, “You Belong With Me.” Swift, who has won everything from American Music Awards to Country Music Association trophies to that now-infamous MTV Video Music Award moonman, said her Grammy nominations represented the apex for her. “To be recognized by the Grammys is the ultimate honor,” said Swift in a telephone call shortly after finding out about her nominations. “The last couple of months has been a nonstop dream come true.” Another diva was also nominated in all three categories: Lady Gaga. The country act the Zac Brown Band was nominated for best new artist, along with R&B siren Keri Hilson, rockers MGMT, the punk duo the Ting Tings and the rock group the Silversun Pickups. The year’s most popular new artist, Lady Gaga, wasn’t in the category because she wasn’t eligible; her single “Just Dance” had been nominated last year, before she was a platinum-selling act; previous Grammy nominees can’t be nominated in the category. Recording Academy President Neil Portnow said that scenario won’t likely happen again: “There will be some changes so that that particular situation won’t repeat itself.” The nominations for the Grammys, to be held Jan. 31, were unveiled as part of a prime-time CBS special. It was the second year in a row that the Recording Academy revealed a hand-

ful of its 109 nominees during a televised concert; in the past, they had been announced during a morning news conference. But Wednesday’s special gave nominees the chance to perform, such as the Black Eyed Peas, who sang their ubiquitous hit, “I Gotta Feeling,” as well as provided face time for CBS’ stars, like LL Cool J, the rapper-actor who is the star of NCIS: Los Angeles. Maxwell performed a tribute to Jackson during the special; for Maxwell, the night was a culmination of his comeback after an eight-year layoff. “This is very surreal for me. I’m not used to this,” said Maxwell. “I’ve been throwing out my trash, buying my milk, and living in basic obscurity ... To come back and make a record based on my own living experiences and not on my desire to be No. 1 ... I feel like I’ve already won. If nothing comes of it it’s already like the cherry on the cake for me.”

Everyone has heard the expression about starving artists, but for the graduating seniors in Jacksonville State University’s art department, the future doesn’t seem so grim. Even with a down economy and jobs being scarce, these artists are keeping their chins up. “There’s always a risk with (starting your own business) because you’re basing your sales on the economy,” said Harper Brown, who is receiving her bachelor’s of fine art in ceramics, during the opening reception to the Fall 2009 Senior Art Exhibition at Hammond Hall gallery on the JSU campus Tuesday night. Brown and her husband plan on moving back to their home in Valley Head and opening their own business where they will sell ceramics, homemade soaps and papers and a variety of other items. She thinks she’ll have more luck depending on herself for income, especially since she doesn’t have a master’s degree. “I’m gutsy and I feel like I’m a business woman,” she said. “I know how to sell things and approach people. I’d rather do this than drive to work.” She believes that even with people spending less, the functional value of her handmade plates, bowls, mugs, serving platters and other creations will still generate business. “I guess that’s why I’m drawn to it,” she said. “I’m a practical person and it’s economical. People tend to want a more handmade thing, but there’s always a risk.” Senior graphic designer Bonnie Garmony hasn’t landed a post-graduation job yet, but she has applied for some. If she doesn’t get a job, she says she’ll probably end up interning somewhere. “I don’t think it’s any harder than any other job,” Garmony said of trying to find a job with a degree in art. “Last time I saw the want ads there were four (jobs open for graphic designers). So maybe it has dried up some. But you know, the economy goes up and down.” Her senior project is a series of posters that tries to twist people’s perspective of common objects, such as a rose, candle and knife. Her long-term goal is to move out of the state and do cartooning, maybe to California, or to Atlanta to work for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Marvin Shaw, the senior seminar professor for art students at JSU, says the art department officials have not noticed a recession in the art world yet, but does

admit that they only deal with a small number of students. His class prepares graduating seniors for graduate school and working in their field post-graduation. “What I insist on telling them is that they need to be ready to move elsewhere,” he said. “The big cities is where it is.”

He says that making sure the students are prepared to get a job is part of all the art instructors’ jobs. He tells his students that it takes at least three years for an artist to introduce themselves to the world and get their name and product out and break even, as far as investing goes. “You’ve got to introduce yourself to society and show them what you have and make a lot of it,” he said. “Getting work in the right place at the right time is something you have to work at all the time. Hopefully, that’s what we’ve been teaching them.” The Senior Art Exhibition is open Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the Hammond Hall gallery on the JSU campus. MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — The collectors are back. That’s what Art Basel Miami Beach organizers and galleries are expecting. They say recent auctions and art fairs have indicated that collectors are again acquiring high art and that they are not afraid to reach into their pockets and spend money this year during the fair, which opens Thursday. “It was quite clear that the American collectors were back and participating,” Bonnie Clearwater, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, said. “So, there seems to be a lot of optimism.” Dealers agree. “I think they are buying again,” said Steven Henry, director of the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York. “I wouldn’t say the market has rebounded in full. ... I think what you are seeing is slightly more confidence in the economy.” Henry will be bringing about 30 works from about 16 artists, including Sherrie Levine’s bronze Coat. Jane Cohan of the James Cohan Gallery in New York says her expectations are very high since gallery sales are back up to pre-recession levels. “It’s been really growing over the

course of the fall. The last three or four weeks have been really good,” she said. “I think the auction market really gave a lot of buoyancy to the market and has built consumer confidence. I think people are back at feeling OK at spending on art.” In mid-November, Andy Warhol’s “200 One Dollar Bills,” brought in $43.8 million at auction at Sotheby’s, more than three times its highest pre-sale estimate of $12 million. Meanwhile, at Christie’s, sales of postwar and contemporary art totaled $74.1 million, within its pre-sale estimate of $66.9 million to $94 million. Marc Spiegler, co-director Art Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach, says it is always hard to predict sales. But indications are “pretty optimistic.” “People were predicting that dozens if not hundreds of galleries would close and that hasn’t happened,” he said. Museum curators are expected to come. “The number of museum groups from all over the United States and the rest of the world is on par with last year and previous years,” he said. “When you have good art that’s available, there’s a market for it. ... The art market is still part of the general economy and those people feel confident about their economic situation and those who want to buy art will buy art.”

Ray Romano hopes everybody loves his new TNT series By Luaine Lee

Don’t sign with anybody else because we’re interested.’ I said, ’There IS nobody else.” Letterman’s production company produced Everybody Loves Raymond, which ran for nine seasons. As it turned out, everybody DID love Raymond.

BURBANK, Calif. — Everybody may love Raymond except for Ray Romano himself. The star of the long-running hit sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond has managed to stay the same guy he was when he was repairing futon mattresses for his best friend and living in Queens. In Hollywood that’s as rare as real blondes. One of the things that’s kept him humble is his 21-year marriage to Anna. When Raymond premiered, Anna was in New York with three little kids and Romano was in L.A. He and his friend, Kevin James, decided to celebrate in Las Vegas. Romano phoned to tell her. “She said, ’Oh, really.’ So I just played along and went, ’Hey, my show aired last night. You know what? Millions and millions of people saw me on TV.’ I’m just goofing around with this bravado. ’OK? So that’s why I’m doing what I’m doing, ’cause I am a TV STAR.’ She said, ’You’re still the dick I married.”’ Laughing, and leaning back in his black vinyl office chair, Romano says, “That’s good for me. There’s somebody in my life you get the truth from.” Now the father of four kids (a daughter, 19, twins, 16, and an 11year-old), Romano is the counterpoint to his character in the endearing new TNT show, Men of a Certain Age, which premieres next Monday. The comedian plays a partystore owner with a gambling problem, who is separated from his wife. Scott Bakula as a wannabe actor and Andre Braugher as a car salesman make up the trio of old pals who are sharing a midlife crisis. Romano admits he, too, likes wagering. “I’ve gambled. I’ve dipped my toe in there, but it’s not as dramatic as what Joe’s going through. But I know the world. I grew up going to the racetrack in New York and betting in football pools and this and that. And I work in Vegas, so I know the world. I have a penchant. I am

He’s dressed in a white T-shirt with “Kentucky” written on it, an unbuttoned tealblue suede-cloth shirt and jeans. On his left wrist is a plastic LED watch. While Men of a Certain Age is both funny and touching, it shines with veracity, a quality that Romano (who co-wrote the first episode with Mike Royce) treasures. “I got a passion for this kind of thing where it’s just real,” he says, brushing his hand through his salt-and-pepper hair. “But I don’t need to do heavy melodrama. I don’t mind doing something that’s funny and dramatic at the same time as long as it’s real. I think I’ve had my fill — I love what I did on Raymond but I’ve had my fill of that type of comedy where it’s a little broad

and slightly farcical and heightened past the reality level. But I like doing something that people can relate to on a real level.” Another element that keeps Romano, 51, down to earth is his disbelief in his own good fortune. “I don’t know if this is true of all comedians, but we don’t really believe the success we have. You think at any minute someone’s going to expose you as an imposter. You really can’t get too big for your britches ’cause you don’t believe that. There’s both things going on. Sometimes you think you’re the best thing in the world, but sometimes you think you’re worthless. It’s a weird mix, the dichotomy of the perception of yourself. I’m just always so grateful that people want to see anything I do I don’t think I have it in me to be too ’dickish.”’ In fact, when he began in standup he quit several times for a year or more. At the 10-year mark he suffered real doubts even though he’d done all the

major talk shows. “At the same point these comics were getting development deals for TV shows — Tim Allen had a show, Roseanne had a show, Jerry (Seinfeld) had a show, Brett Butler had a show — so these were happening to all the guys who were up at that level. “I thought, ’I love standup but I love to progress and do the next thing, is that going to pass me by?’ I was 36. My exposure was out there. It wasn’t like they hadn’t seen me. But it just wasn’t happening. And I just thought, ’Well, it’s never going to happen,’ and I had a little bit of a lull there where I wondered if I wanted to be doing it 10 years from now.” Finally one Saturday the producer of The Late Show with David Letterman phoned Romano. “I was in the backyard yelling at somebody or my wife was yelling at me. He called up and said, ’Hey, we liked what you did (on Letterman’s show) would you be interested in a development

The overhauled version of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland falls down the rabbit hole on Sunday when the Syfy Channel airs the first of two parts. This modern version not only features nightmarish objects like a casino made of cards, a city poised many stories high and a brunette, Roman-nosed Alice, but creatures few of us recognize. Matt Frewer (Max Headroom) steals the show as the White Knight and Kathy Bates does a yeoman’s job as the red-headed Queen of Hearts. But Carroll’s wit is lacking and so are the precious moments we recall from the book. Writer-director Nick Willing adapted the work. He also directed Tin Man, TV’s modern version of The Wizard of Oz two years ago. Neither production managed to conjure the magic of the original, twisted as they are into modern times. I guess we’re lucky, at least, Alice isn’t texting the White Rabbit. qqq

One of folks’ favorite characters on NBC’s 30 Rock is the sweet-tempered page, Kenneth, played by Jack McBrayer. Tina Fey, star and creator of the show, says she patterned the character of Kenneth after McBrayer. He admits he does share some qualities with his fresh-faced do-gooder. “Well I think just very generally, you know, kind of being a people pleaser and always wanting to do good at my job. And I will be the first to admit sometimes I’m not exactly sure how this big world works. But I just try to cope with it as well as I can,” he says.

is having its best season ever if you ask me. To me, when actors get restless on series, I find them to be a little on the lazy side. I’m still looking to be a better actor, and I’m grateful every day. Q: In Cold Case, you jump around in time, solving missing persons cases from all sorts of periods. Do you have a favorite time period the show has gotten to explore? A: I actually prefer cases that are a little bit more recent. But I do like the ’80s because of the music. In our two-part season finale it was exclusively Pearl Jam. Q: The time slot changes have not been helpful to the show’s ratings. A: Well, we have fans that have followed us wherever we go. And our audience actually watches the show when it airs, they don’t DVR it. That’s a big difference. We are trying to do more cases aimed at 18- to 49-year-olds, though.
