Super Mario for Wii lacks in co-op play My biggest gripe with most video games I see is the lack of cooperative play in titles. For whatever reason, I have actual friends, but I’m not terribly competitive with them. Enter my love for dungeon crawlers, where a buddy and I can team up to terrorize John the pixels. Dietrich I’d given Pushing Buttons up that nondungeon crawlers would ever embrace the co-op play, until I recently played Super Mario Bros. Wii. I’ll give them an A for effort, but that’s about it. Unfortunately, the co-op play is terrible in the game. Unless you keep up a constant stream of communication, such as “I’m gonna jump on the koopa so get out of the way,” you end up bumping into your partner frequently enough to cost them and you numerous lives. As in, when I played it recently, my friend and I were each through about 60 lives (thanks to the miracle of continues). When either of us played it solo, those koopas and goombas ran in terror and we racked up the lives. Together, though, we were less than the sum of our parts. Another gripe I had with the co-op was the characters. For two players, Mario and Luigi work well. But with three or four, two must play as tiny Toad-like characters. I’d have loved to see Wario, or Rosalina (from Super Mario Galaxy) or any random character from a Mario game. It screams laziness to throw in two Toad characters instead of opening up the library and getting creative. Speaking of that lack of creativity, Mario and Luigi, from what I could tell, played exactly the same. Thanks for the paletteswap there, Nintendo. Not to harp too much on the
game, as the individual play is great fun. The game is a lot like a re-make of Super Mario World from the Super Nintendo, with a little Super Mario Bros. 3 from the Nintendo thrown in. It’s a bit on the shallow side for me to recommend buying it, but I’m sure it would make a great long-term rental. Just don’t think you can play it with your buddies. A game you can play with your buddies, and have great fun doing, is Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. Realizing that there wasn’t much that needed upgrading from a gameplay perspective, most of the game’s improvement comes from the story aspect. And it is improved. The story follows Marvel Comics’ recent “Civil War” storyline, and it gives you the option of playing either side: Heroes in favor of giving up their secret identities and working for the government, and those opposed to that loss of civil liberty. Aside from being a nice change from “save the world from giant threat X,” the story also allows for different conversations. When asked a question by a nonplayable character, you get three options to answer: an aggressive answer, a defensive answer or a diplomatic answer. I played as Deadpool, the wisecracking mercenary antihero for much of the game, so I suspect I got the most comical and entertaining answers. The point is, though, that you can affect your storyline to another degree (besides just picking a side), which is a nice change of pace from just plowing through a game, waiting for all the forced plot twists, and considering that a story. I’d highly recommend Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, either solo or with pals, though it’ll take some 20 hours or more to finish. ‘Cause nothing is better than palling around with superheroes. Video games extras come at a high cost By Mike Musgrove The Washington Post
Somebody needs to tell the video game industry that there’s a recession still going on out there. Does $60 for a new video game already seem a little steep? As usual, some new titles this year are looking to reach deeper into wallets with “special edition” packages aimed at the hard-core fan, in which buyers get a tchotchke or two in addition to that shiny disc. This industry typically argues that you get a lot of entertainment bang for your buck with its wares; after all, gamers can squeeze many hours out of their favorite titles. But that economic argument doesn’t account for some of the offerings you’ll encounter while wandering the aisle of the electronics store this season. Take, for example, a spiffy set of night-vision goggles with a video game company’s moniker emblazoned on its underside. They’re fully functional, all right — and a steal at $180 for those gamers who opt for the “prestige edition” of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. For hoops fans, there’s the “anniversary edition” of the basketball title NBA 2K10, priced at $100, which comes packaged inside a sturdy metal locker. Folks who buy this set also get online entry to the game’s online “Gold Room,” where they have the luxury of playing against other Web-connected players who also bought
the pricier bundle. The dance-club-themed DJ Hero comes with a turntable-like controller designed to make players feel as if they’re scratching and mixing tracks from Jay-Z and Eminem. Thanks to the special controller that’s required for the game, getting this will set players back a minimum of $120. But the upgraded package, priced at $200 delivers would-be DJs a special carrying case that converts into a stand, perfect for those who don’t want to park the thing on a coffee table. On the other end of the armchair fantasy spectrum, there’s The Strike, a fishing video game that invites players to spend time hunting for a prize-winning striped bass. Now, you could sit in front of your Xbox with the usual controller in hand, but where’s the fun in that? The pricier set, at $140, comes with a fishingrod-shaped controller that vibrates in your hand as you snag and land a big one. As for The Beatles: Rock Band, there are plenty of ways for the fan to spend money. The high-end version of the game bundle runs $250, which gets you a drum set with a pearl finish, like something Ringo might’ve played, and a bass-guitar controller shaped like Paul’s customary instrument. Spend another hundred bucks apiece and you can also get a controller made to look like a Rickenbacker or a Gretsch Duo-Jet like the ones used by John Lennon or George Harrison.

Arts survey finds drop in movie, museum attendance By HILLEL ITALIE Associated Press

Actress Jenifer Lewis, the voice of Mama Odie in the animated film, ‘The Princess and the Frog,’ poses for a photo at the Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, Calif.
Audacious actress got close to the president By MIKE CIDONI Associated Press
GLENDALE, Calif. — Before last month’s White House party-crashing, there was Jenifer Lewis —— paving the way toward the Obamas. As Lewis tells it, she didn’t exactly crash January’s presidential inauguration. But the singer and veteran character actress got a lot closer to the new president than his staff and security likely had planned. Lewis offered the explanation while promoting her latest film, the animated The Princess and the Frog, last month on the Disney lot. “I had a ticket,” the actress recalled, adding that her seat was so far away from center stage, she could barely see inaugural action. “So I went over to a Marine, and I told a fib and said that I left my credentials on the plane. And he was standing there at attention with that beautiful uniform on. His head tilted just a little. He didn’t want to break formation. And he said, ‘Aunt Helen?’ He happened to be a Fresh Prince fanatic. And he proceeded to escort me 30 feet from the podium.” Lewis, 52, clearly has a following, after logging more than 80 film and television credits over the last 20 years. There were a few earlier screen gigs, but the big Hollywood break came with 1993’s Tina
Turner biopic What’s Love Got to Do with It, in which Lewis portrayed the superstar singer’s chain-smoking, tough-talking mother Zelma Bullock. Lewis’ biggest recent mainstream successes have come as a voice actress for animated features, with 2004’s Shark Tale and the 2006 Cars both box-office blockbusters. Now Lewis is in ’toon again, as the 200-year-old voodoo queen Mama Odie in The Princess and the Frog. Lewis originally auditioned for the role of the princess’ mother, which eventually went to Oprah Winfrey. “And they then asked, ‘Can you play an old women?”’ Lewis recalled, saying vaudeville legend Moms Mabley immediately came to mind. “You know, we have to honor our ancestors. So, I took my teeth out, and there she was.” Princess spins around “Tiana,” Disney’s first black princess. “I can’t see color. I just never did,” said Lewis, who lives in Los Angeles and has a daughter Charmaine, 22. “I never saw race in a Disney classic film,” Lewis continued. “I saw the message. I learned that good was better than evil. But am I excited that this is now an African-American princess? Yes. Tiana. Obama. And an idea whose time has arrived.”
NEW YORK — If you haven’t gone to a movie, jazz concert or an art exhibit in recent years, you are in steadily growing company. A new study from the National Endowment for the Arts finds a notable decline in theater, museum and concert attendance and other “benchmark” cultural activities between 2002 and 2008 for adults 18 and older, and a sharper fall from 25 years ago. The drop was for virtually all art forms and for virtually all age groups and levels of education. The NEA’s senior deputy chair, Joan Shigekawa, listed a few possible reasons: The rise of the Internet; less free time; and cuts in arts classes. “These numbers definitely represent a challenge,” Shigekawa said. Released Thursday, the NEA’s 2008 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts is the sixth such report to come out since 1982, when 39 percent of adults attended a “benchmark arts activity” at least once in the previous year. The percentage peaked at 41 percent in 1992, just as the Internet was taking off, and dropped to 34.6 percent in 2008. Between 2002 and 2008, percentages fell for moviegoing from 60 to 53.3, for jazz from 10.8 to 7.8, for museums/galleries from 26.5 to 22.7. Other categories with lower attendance include ballet, opera, musical and nonmusical theater, and art/ crafts fairs and festivals.
The reading of “literature,” defined as “plays/poetry/novels/short stories,” was an exception, rising from 46.7 to 50.2, an increase NEA research director Sunil Iyengar credits, at least in part, to the growth of online reading. But the Internet did not stop a decline, from 56 percent to 54 percent, of reading of any kind that was not required by school or work. Jesse Rosen, president and CEO of the League of American Orchestras, was concerned by the attendance numbers but encouraged by the substantial number of adults, estimated by the NEA at around 40 million, who watched or listened to classical music through electronic media, including online. “There is a fundamental change happening in our lives. There’s a sense that we have an old way of defining participating in the arts and that the public is redefining what participation means,” Rosen said. “The challenge for us is to see where the public is and engage with them and adapt.” Rosen cited interactive concerts, multimedia concerts and shows of varying lengths, at different times of day. “A lot of concerts remain absolutely essential, but it’s not a contradiction to say that the public is showing an interest in new ways of engaging and that we need to a grow our bag of tricks,” said Rosen, who will be among the arts representatives, from about 40 organizations, discussing the report Thursday morning in a live Webcast.

Jerry Lee Lewis: Whole lot of playin’ still going on
www.bamaescapes.com
Arctic Monkeys take new path By Greg Kot
By Randy Lewis Los Angeles Times
Chicago Tribune
LAS VEGAS — Jerry Lee Lewis sinks into a leather chair backstage at the House of Blues. The 74-year-old rock ’n’ roll pioneer has just completed an impressive hourlong set at a private party for an associate of country star Tim McGraw. He’s sharply dressed in a white vest embossed with floral curlicues, over a black shirt tucked into black denim jeans. But the most striking thing about his physical presence might be his skin: Few of even the hardest-living rock or country musicians have been through as much as the man also known as “the Killer.” Yet his face is youthful — not the battle-scarred war zone of wrinkles likeKeith Richards and Merle Haggard wear. And there are those fingers: long and graceful, and still fully capable of tickling, tapping or pounding the ivory keys of the instrument with which he is synonymous. “You can’t beat a piana,” he drawls. Lewis displays such respect for the instrument that it’s hard to believe he actually torched one — though legend holds that he did precisely that a decade before Jimi Hendrix tried the same trick with a guitar. It was that act that helped earn the Louisiana native another nickname, the “Ferriday Fireball.” “I like to play guitar too,” he says. “I play my guitar just about as good as anybody plays guitar. Yeah! I can play some heavy blues, and some good rock ’n’ roll on guitar. ... But I don’t want to do that, because then I’m gonna be obligated to do it. I know (fans) expect to hear a piana. ... They’re not going to allow the other Jerry Lee.” It’s difficult to imagine anyone — fans included — being able to box in Lewis. His signature hits “Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On” and “Great Balls of Fire” were explosive songs that left adults of the 1950s convinced that the devil had arrived in the world to claim their children. While Lewis might have mellowed with age, he is, as acknowledged by the title of his 2006 album, Last Man Standing — the Duets, the only surviving icon of a singular generation. Among the artists Sam Phillips discovered and recorded at Sun Records in the 1950s — including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins — Lewis, the biggest hellion of them all and the one Phillips once described as “on balance, probably the most talented human being I ever had the opportunity to work with,” has outlived every one. Last Man Standing is full of superstar duets with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, B.B. King, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and a slew of others, which helped it sell nearly 200,000 copies. Many of those guests are back, with new names added to the list, for another set that Steve Bing and his Shan-
Sometimes you have to slow up or take a detour to get to your next destination — as Alex Turner learned on the way to the Arctic Monkeys’ third album, Humbug (Domino), released a few months ago. The band’s singer and song-writer, Turner was barely 20 in 2006 when he suddenly found himself in England’s biggest band. Less than two years later, the Sheffield quartet had released two best-selling albums (Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not and Favourite Worst Night-mare), but the whirlwind of recording and constant touring had taken its toll. The band’s original bassist, Andy Nicholson, quit in 2006 (replaced by Nick O’Malley), and Turner acknowledges that “by the time we got done touring the second album, we were a bit burned out. There wasn’t the energy we had before.” Turner says the success of Whatever People Say I Am was almost too much too soon. “We weren’t very sure of ourselves,” he says. “We were still figuring it out. You’re right in it, and it’s hard to understand. Fortunately, we had each other. I was lucky to be going through it with my friends. (Drummer Matt Helders) and I have known each other since we were 7 years old. (Guitarist Jamie Cook) and I were friends in school when we started playing guitars together and decided to form the band. I can’t imagine what it would have been like with people I didn’t know as well.” The band decided to record Favourite Worst Nightmare as a quick follow-up to the best-selling debut. “It was important to rush in and do the second record in the wake of the first one and all the chaos it caused,” Turner says. “Otherwise, we could have deliberated about it, and freaked out about what it should be. Who knows, we could’ve talked ourselves into recording a rap album.” But Turner acknowledges that the second album lacked the quality control of the debut. “There are tunes on there that I still love playing,” he says, “and a few others that were a mistake.” He recharged his creative batteries by stepping away from the band briefly to record as the Last Shadow Puppets with another childhood friend, Miles Kane. The resulting 2008 album, The Age of the Understatement, exposed Turner to new sounds and approaches. Whereas with the Arctic Monkeys he specialized in closely observed narratives about nightlife misadventure over hurtling beats and concise guitars, the Last Shadow Puppets explored more atmospheric orchestrations and Turner developed a deeper, more reflective singing voice. “I turned a bit of a corner as a songwriter and singer making that record,” Turner says. “The way I was singing on that record really bled into the next thing we did.”
Kirk McKoy/Associated Press
Jerry Lee Lewis, at the House of Blues in Las Vegas, is going strong at 74. gri-La Music label in Santa Monica, Calif., plan to issue early in 2010 (a five-song sampler EP was made available online in November). A third album is set to follow about nine months later. But it’s not about big names paying their respects. Among the raw tracks Bing is working up with the album’s co-producer, veteran drummer-to-the-rockgods Jim Keltner, is one featuring “the other Jerry Lee,” with Lewis accompanying himself on guitar on a freewheeling, country rendition of Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues.” Naturally, Lewis remakes the lyrics to fit his own outsized personality: “I shot a boy in Memphis / Didn’t want to watch him die,” adding a sardonic little “heh-heh” after his revamp. And there’s Lewis at the piano, singing the gospel song “Peace in the Valley”: “The bear will be gentle and the wolf will be tame / The lion shall lie down with the lamb ... (and) I’ll be changed from this creature that I am.” Lewis is more lamb than lion these days, although he flashed a bit of the old bite at the recent 25th anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts at New York’s Madison Square Garden. After a laudatory introduction by actor Tom Hanks, Lewis kicked over his piano stool to start the second night’s show, delighting the crowd.

Blakroc album takes on a psychedelic feel Blakroc Blakroc
Last year, blues-rock revivalists the Black Keys teamed with left-field hip-hop producer Danger Mouse for the sorely overlooked Attack & Release. That concept continues with Blakroc, a collaboration born out of the Keys’ friendship with Roc-a-Fella cofounder Dame Dash. Here, though, lead vocal duties have been turned over to a random helping of MCs — Mos Def, Q-Tip, Jim Jones, Jay-Z sound-a-like NOE, and M.O.P.’s Billy Danze among them — and R&B crooner Nicole Wray. All of it unlikely, sure, but what looks like a mess on paper is rather impressive
on record. The drums are thick and the rhythms — driven by jarring guitars and organs — are warm and woozy, giving things a psychedelic feel. It’s a backdrop that fits well with lyrical warnings on sex, love, money, and betrayal, themes owned by the blues long before rap gave them a fresh makeover. — Michael Pollock, The Philadelphia Inquirer

The Clipse is back, for better and worse The Clipse Til the Casket Drops
The rap duo that brought you the 2002 trunk-thump anthem “Grindin”’ has been doing a bit of that themselves since then, toiling in record label delays until finally getting around to their third album Til the Casket Drops. So is The Clipse back in full swing? Yes, and no. There are a couple of radio-ready songs here worth putting on repeat. “I’m Good,” the first official single off the album, is smooth around the edges with the help of Pharrell. It’s breezier than most fare from The Clipse, and has a memorable hook that will keep the request lines buzzing into the new year. And “Popular Demand (Popeyes)” has a great beat, over which the brotherly duo of Malice and Pusha rap about the comeback they feel is overdue. But there’s a lot of filler here as well. “All Eyes On Me” is a dance track with a Miami club feel. But the melody fights with the beat for attention, and the results
sound like something that needed more mixing, or perhaps less noise. There’s an unpolished feel to Til the Casket Drops. The talent is there, but it misses the mark and does little to cement The Clipse’s comeback as anything more than one last chance. CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: “There Was A Murder” is a good song about a neighborhood staying quiet about a murder when police come knocking. “Mum’s the word, that’s hustler’s ettiquette/ You’d rather hang yourself than turn state’s evidence” The Clipse raps. It comes off as an honest, way-of-life portrayal rather than an endorsement of making snitches pay for their loose lips. — Ron Harris, Associated Press
Tegan and Sara’s new CD their most potent yet Tegan and Sara Sainthood
Canadian twins Tegan and Sara Quin have made their bones in the Calgary music scene since 1998 as a punk-pastoral duo known for contagious, pianobased power pop and interesting haircuts. Before the prissiness of Feist or the roustabout ideal of Rilo Kiley, the Quin girls were hitting pop hard and moving on fast — stopping only at 2007’s The Con for spaciousness and texture — while looking great doing so. Their return to the rapier-swift thing of its start makes Sainthood punchy and blunt with tracks such as “Northshore” showing off the sisters’ spunky indie-rock roots. If “Night Watch!” doesn’t curl your eyelashes, nothing will. Sainthood also clarifies the differences between the two singer-songwriters’ respective skill sets
— a subtle distinction that first emerged on The Con. Tegan likes her tunes simple and sharp, a la the ripsnorting anthem “The Cure,” while Sara’s melodies, choruses and subject matter are slightly more elusive and open-ended — e.g., “Alligator.” Rather than concentrate on these slight differences, focus on the idiosyncratic beauty of their harmonies as they ripple through their most potent fulllength yet. —A.D. Amorosi, The Philadelphia Inquirer

Eastwood continues streak with ‘Invictus’ invictus H H H Rating: PG-13 for brief strong language Running time: 2:12 STARRING: Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon
Associated Press Invictus is a sports film that is more about what’s happening in the stands than on the playing field. It’s South Africa in 1990 and change — as seen in the first scene of the film — is literally coming down the street. After 27 years in prison, Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) has been released. Clint Eastwood’s camera lowers on a motorcade. On one side of the road, an all-white rugby team practices on pristine, green grass. On the other, black youths play soccer across a dirt field. Between the two rolls Mandela — “Madiba” to his followers. Invictus, too, cuts an unlikely path, choosing to tell the story of South Africa’s sea change under Mandela’s leadership through the prism of sport. It’s the story of a nation’s shift, as evidenced by its bleachers. The filmmakers, perhaps sensing Mandela’s enormous accomplishment may be too outsized for a simple
movie to convey, narrow their sights on Mandela’s calculated embrace of the nation’s rugby team. It comes off like a case study in leadership, perhaps a bit clinical and limited, but still deeply revealing. After a series of newscasts, we’re swiftly ushered to 1994, when Mandela is taking office after his momentous election. Quickly, Mandela makes it clear that everything in his administration will reflect a unified South Africa, which he hopes to be “a shining light in the world.” He tells his head of security (Tony Kgoroge) that he, too, will work alongside white Afrikaners. He even urges them to smile while pushing people away. It starts with rugby. Mandela attends a game between South African’s national team (the Springboks) and England. The crowd, many waving apartheid-era flags, largely boos Mandela. The few black fans actually cheer for their opponent. Many want to do away with the Springboks name and their green and gold colors. Mandela, though, urges against this “petty revenge” and successfully argues for the Springboks to remain. Afrikaners are now their partners, he tells an all-black gathering,
not their enemy. With rugby’s World Cup to be held in South Africa a year later, Mandela puts much of himself into making the Springboks both a champion and a galvanizing force of hope for the nation. He reaches out in particular to the team’s captain, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon). It’s a gamble, one unpopular among his followers. In many ways, Mandela is “exposed” in the rugby stadium. An exasperated adviser tells him to “at least risk it for something more important than rugby.” But the importance of sports and national symbols are at the heart of Invictus. The movie, itself, exists as a lighthouse for inspiration. That saps it of some drama, cloaking its mission in importance — a weakness most felt when the film’s key song, the atrociously sappy “Colorblind” by South African boy band Overtone, plays. But the film is nevertheless stirring. Invictus is dripping with inspiration — how to summon it, how to communicate it. Late in his career, Eastwood seems to be finding it everywhere. His recent run, from Mystic River to Gran Torino and the underrated Changeling, continues to be a place it resides.
JOHANNESBURG — South Africans say a new Hollywood film about sport, race and Nelson Mandela will tell the world about the country’s history of struggle and triumph despite some criticism that the lead roles are played by American actors. Clint Eastwood’s Invictus depicts Mandela, South Africa’s first black president, as a strategist for racial reconciliation, working to bring whites and blacks together after the end of apartheid by supporting the country’s mostly white national rugby team. The movie is “a great opportunity for everyone, not only in South Africa but the rest of the world, to see what Nelson Mandela has done for the country,” Williams, who helped coach the actors during the shooting of the movie in South Africa, told The Associated Press Wednesday. Most South Africans won’t see Invictus until its general release Thursday, but the movie already has made headlines and dominated talk show radio. It has not been universally embraced, with some complaining that South Africans should be starring in their own stories. Mandela is portrayed by Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon plays the rugby team captain. But South Africans have key roles, including Patrick Mofokeng as Mandela’s chief bodyguard. Mofokeng endorsed Freeman, saying at Tuesday’s premiere in Johannesburg: “He was made to play the role. I think he is Nelson Mandela.” Acclaimed South African actor John Kani, who is not in the movie, told the AP he understood international movies needed big stars like Freeman to draw investors and audiences. But Kani was worried South Africans would never get a chance to claim “bankable” status if producers and the government did not try to develop and showcase local talent. Still, Kani said movies like Invictus had broader benefits, telling the world South Africa’s inspiring story. In many ways, though, South Africa remains racially divided. Blacks denied education and opportunity for generations under apartheid remain in impoverished townships on the outskirts of cities where the best neighborhoods remain largely white. Some blacks complain Mandela spent too much time on racial reconciliation and too little on economic development or fighting AIDS. Black critics say whites did little in response to gestures Mandela made, such as donning the rugby shirt or visiting a white separatist enclave to have tea with the widow of Hendrik Verwoerd, the architect of apartheid. Sport, too, has not overcome the past. Attempts to reach out to black fans and players have repeatedly run up against rugby’s legacy of racism, and black fans have been attacked at rugby stadiums.

LOS ANGELES — A colossal budget, visionary technology and a down-to-thewire workload on a film whose fortunes are a real question mark. James Cameron has been here before on little ditties called Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Titanic. In case anyone’s forgotten how that worked out for him, Titanic stacked up 11 Academy Awards, best picture and director among them, and a record $1.8 billion worldwide at the box office. This time, Cameron’s vision is riding on Avatar, a science-fiction epic aiming to push the bounds of digital filmmaking and 3-D presentation into the heavens, with a reported price tag well in excess of the $200 million spent to make Titanic. Will audiences come along? Cameron thinks so. “It’s hard for me to imagine that short of some massive marketing debacle, that it’s not going to work for people. I mean, we may not have a kind of slam-dunk opening weekend that settles the whole case. I don’t think the case is going to be settled until week two or maybe week three,” Cameron said in an interview only days after completing Avatar, just in time for its worldwide blowout Dec. 18. “Let’s face it. It wasn’t settled on Titan-
ries Ghosts of the Abyss and Aliens of the Deep and developing the technology for Avatar, this marks his first narrative film since Titanic 12 years ago. Cameron’s reputation and a mammoth marketing push by distributor 20th Century Fox virtually guarantee hit status for Avatar. Still, in this blockbuster age, there are hits and there are HITS. Some factors in its favor: n Science-fiction and fantasy have gone mainstream in a huge way since Cameron’s last foray in the field. n Now that cartoon hits have built fan appetite for digital 3-D films, Avatar is Hollywood’s big test for the future of liveaction movies in three dimensions. Avatar in 3-D will bring in about $4 to $5 a ticket more than the 2-D version. n Cameron’s a franchise unto himself, a digital-effects trailblazer who always dazzles, even when he doesn’t score a runaway hit (The Abyss). “I was watching The Wizard of Oz the other day, and I thought, that’s Avatar. That’s what Avatar’s going to do to people,” said Aliens star Sigourney Weaver, who reunites with Cameron this time as a scientist overseeing a program that allows humans to take on alien forms to explore — and exploit — Pandora, the distant moon of a planet orbiting Alpha Centauri. “Because it’s so bold, and it’s so out there, and it’s such an experience.”

Ohatchee songwriter published on Christmas album By Deirdre Long dlong@annistonstar.com
This holiday season, Randy Burke of Ohatchee got quite a gift — his song “More than Eye Can See” was published on a new album called The Lights of Christmas. Being chosen came as somewhat of a surprise to Burke. He’s a full-time employee at the Anniston Army Depot, but has been writing song lyrics for only a little more than a year. He burke scratched out the lyrics for “More Than Eye Can See” after seeing a call for Christmas songs from JIP Records in Nashville
back in July. A few weeks later, he was told his song had been one of 12 chosen for the album. “I wasn’t nervous until I found out that I made it,” the soft-spoken Burke said earlier this week. “I’ve been out of my comfort zone trying to sell it. That’s what I like about writing — I’m in the background.” “More Than Eye Can See” tells the story of a man walking through town on Christmas and noticing all the people in need, from the homeless to children at the hospital. “In our times today it’s really relevant, but I guess it is anytime,” Burke said of his lyrics. “In today’s time Christ is left out of Christmas. This guy is going through town and sees people helping each other and kind of has a revelation.” George McClure, a Nashville producer who has worked with
Special to The Star
The song ‘More than Eye Can See,’ written by Randy Burke of Ohatchee, was recently published on the album ‘Lights of Christmas.’ acts such as the Pussycat Dolls 2 and record labels such as Interscope and Warner Bros, says he saw great depth in Burke’s writing, and that’s why “More Than
Eye Can See” was chosen for the album. “If you look at the lyrics, there’s a lot of detail in his story,” said McClure, who also started JIP Records, the label that published The Lights of Christmas album. “I was very impressed with him. This song has a depth about his fellow people. It’s wonderful to see in song.” The Lights of Christmas is part of a series JIP publishes called “The Band of Writers.” The company calls for submissions and chooses the best songs to be published and recorded. Burke’s song was chosen from thousands of submissions, McClure said. “We saw a huge influx of Christmas submissions and thought it was the time to do a Christmas album,” McClure said. The songs are sung by Perry Coleman, who tours as a backup singer with Faith Hill, and Kim Parent,
who sings with Brooks & Dunn. Burke says that his song being chosen showed a bit of divine intervention, especially since he’s been songwriting for such a short time. But for now it’s still just a hobby. “I wouldn’t mind doing it full time,” he said. “But I don’t see myself quitting my job until retirement. I’ve still got to pay the bills. But if I make something out of it, that’s just a blessing.” Burke is donating a portion of his earnings from the album to the Soup Bowl. The Lights of Christmas is available locally at Promised Land Christian Bookstore in Anniston and Joy Christian Supplies in Jacksonville. It is available online at www.jiprecords. com and will soon be available through digital distributors such as iTunes and Rhapsody.
25 most-played holiday songs By Mark Caro Chicago Tribune
For the past several years, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers has been tracking the radio play of its clients’ holiday songs, and each November the organization announces its 25 most-played list over a fiveyear period. (Not all songs are represented by ASCAP; John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” and Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” for instance, are affiliated with BMI and thus aren’t ranked.) Year to year it’s a pretty stable list, with mostly the same songs appearing in a slightly different order. Phil Crosland, ASCAP’s executive vice president for marketing, has a theory as
to why. “It’s a very tough list to break into, and it has to do with the memories,” he said. “There’s a sense that this holiday music transports us to a better place. I think what it does is it tends to set a certain mood and creates memories of magical holiday times that we’ve grown up with.” The most recent original song on the list is “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” performed by Band Aid in 1984 (No. 24). ASCAP’s 25 most-played holiday tunes, as of November 2008 (with the performer of the most-played rendition): 1. “Winter Wonderland,” Eurythmics 2. “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire),” Nat “King” Cole 3. “Have Yourself a Merry
Little Christmas,” The Pretenders 4. “Sleigh Ride,” The Ronettes 5. “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” Frank Sinatra 6. “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” Michael Buble 7. “White Christmas,” Bing Crosby 8. “Jingle Bell Rock,” Bobby Helms 9. “Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer,” Gene Autry 10. “The Little Drummer Boy,” The Harry Simeone Chorale & Orchestra 11. “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of Year,” Andy Williams 12. “Rockin’ Around Christmas Tree,” Brenda Lee 13. “Silver Bells,” Kenny G 14. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” Amy Grant
15. “Feliz Navidad,” Jose Feliciano 16. “Frosty the Snowman,” The Ronettes 17. “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” Burl Ives 18. “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas,” Johnny Mathis 19. “Blue Christmas,” Elvis Presley 20. “(There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays,” Perry Como 21. “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” John Mellencamp 22. “Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane),” Gene Autry 23. “Carol of the Bells,” David Foster 24. “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” Band Aid 25. “This Christmas,” Gloria Estefan

A growing TV cover-up: Obnoxious pop-up promos By FRAZIER MOORE Associated Press
NEW YORK — Somewhere in the universe of TV viewers, there’s got to be a person who actually likes those popup, on-screen promotions. Someone who thinks, “Thank you, network people, for those useful, informative announcements that block what I’m watching to tell me what I’m watching, or tell me what I could be watching next, which will then be blocked by reminders of what I could be watching after that.” This is a happy viewer all right, and maybe he or she exists in some den or family room absorbing those intrusive promos that, for everybody else, undermine what TV networks are ideally in business to do: entertain, not tick off. TV exists above all as a medium of escape. But how do you escape into a TV show when it’s plastered with scenestealing hype? At least one Web site, stoptvpopups. com, serves as a sounding board and support group for an outspoken few. But almost any viewer can cite annoying instances where a pop-up ad has upstaged a show’s dramatic climax or obscured vital on-screen information. Viewers hate the detective hero of Monk rising from the bottom left screen for eight or nine seconds of vamping, followed by a ghostly but distracting text line that looms for several long minutes to accommodate even the slowest readers: “Monk All New Tonight 9/8c.” The USA network’s motto is “Characters Welcome.” Well, that Monk message adds up to 21 characters, none of them welcome. And what about TBS, where “Freakin’ Sweet!” is an on-screen message plugging Family Guy episodes available on that network’s Web site: “Very Funny” is TBS’ motto. Nothing funny about those cover-ups for its comedies. Viewers don’t forget. Viewers still cite the giant fireball, complete with a whooshing inferno sound, erupting on the screen to promote FX’s firefighter drama Rescue Me. It makes them mad to even think about it. That promo hasn’t aired in two years, says FX spokesman John Solberg. Since then, the network has moved
toward making “our air look cleaner, more theatrical,” generally opting for a single line of promotional text that appears on-screen for about 10 seconds. So maybe all is not lost to the popup-razzi. But across the networks, the pop-up ad is alive and well and inescapable, undermining THIS show to shill for some OTHER show, which, when that show airs, will likely be defaced with promos for yet ANOTHER. And on it goes. Even cartoon viewers like Marge Simpson get riled. In a classic scene from The Simpsons, Marge realizes the TV screen that frames her is cluttered with visual promos. She takes a hand vacuum and sucks up the American Idol logo. When a squad of football players plugging “Football on Fox” swarms across the bottom of the screen, she sprays them with insecticide. An industry term for these ads is “one-thirds.” More telling terms include “snipes” and “violators.” But they began innocently more than two decades ago, when CNN applied a small identifying logo (or “bug”) to the bottom right corner of the screen. Other networks fell in line by similarly branding their news telecasts. Then Fox began accenting its primetime entertainment with a logo flashed before and after each commercial break. Other networks followed suit. Then, on Sept. 11, 2001, the day’s torrent of news spilled onto a supplementary text crawl on the screens of CNN, MSNBC and Fox News Channel. It remains, a permanent fixture at all three networks. After that, with viewers increasingly conditioned to absorb extra data on the screen, many networks asked themselves: Why not take the next step and blast the audience with promos — TiVo-proof and unavoidable — embellishing entertainment shows? They did. And how! The only question for the networks after that has been: Just how big, protracted, animated and noisy can we make those promos before viewers flee to places like Netflix and Hulu, and take that one-third back?

‘Princess and the Frog’ marks Disney’s return to traditional hand-drawn animation By Chuck Barney Contra Costa Times
Disney may have taken a leap forward by pegging its latest animated feature to a black female star, but with “The Princess and the Frog,” the company also took a step back in time. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker (”The Little Mermaid;” “Aladdin”), the film is Disney’s first feature since 2004 to be rendered in hand-drawn animation. It’s an art form the company pioneered, but inexplicably dismissed at one point. “They were selling off the desks, getting rid of the paper ...,” recalls Clements. “It always seemed so shortsighted and sad to us. They were abandoning an incredible legacy that ran so deep.” “With this film,” adds Clements, “it was kind of like we were
getting the band back together.” In 1937, Walt Disney produced “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the first-ever animated feature film. And in 1991, the company’s hand-drawn “Beauty and the Beast” became the first animated feature to be nominated for a best picture Oscar. But in recent years the rousing success of computer-animated films from Pixar and DreamWorks, combined with the waning box-office totals of its own fare, had Disney forsaking pencil and ink for the mouse pad. It was a decision that rankled many, including film critic Leonard Maltin, author of “Of Mice and Magic: A History of American Animated Cartoons.” “Hollywood is so bandwagon-oriented,” Maltin notes. “Everyone became convinced that the only thing kids and families wanted to see was computer animation, which is nonsense. It’s
not about the technique, it’s about the characters and the story.” Thus far, “Frog” has earned mostly raves. In his Time magazine review, critic Richard Corliss called the film an artistic triumph and wrote that it “proves that 2-D can be more than 3-D, when gifted filmmakers put old-fashioned snap back into animation. The lines are freer here, the character movements more supple, the sense of fun unfettered.” That comes as a relief to Maltin, who says a successful handdrawn film will encourage Hollywood to stay in the game. “To abandon 2-D animation,” he says, “would be like telling Ansel Adams, ’Hey, we’ve got color now, so get rid of all that old black-and-white stuff.’ “

The last time we heard from the hand-drawn animators at Disney, they offered up the barnyard tale Home on the Range. The 2004 ’toon was so forgettable it seemed as though it really might be the last time we ever heard from the hand-drawn animators at the studio where the art form was pioneered. Thankfully, the spirit of animation maestro Walt Disney lives on. The studio has gone back to its roots with a fresh, funny retelling of a classic fairy tale in The Princess and the Frog, Disney’s return to hand-drawn animation after a five-year hiatus. Like everyone else, Disney and subsidiary Pixar Animation mostly are fixated on computer animation. But Pixar masterminds John Lasseter and Ed Catmull, who now supervise all Disney animation, love cartoons of every kind and have renewed the studio’s commitment to the pen-and-ink variety along with the pixelated. Princess and the Frog isn’t the second coming of Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King. It’s just plain pleasant, an old-fashioned little charmer that’s not straining to be the next glib animated compendium of pop-culture flotsam. Updating the Brothers Grimm tale “The Frog Prince” into a toe-tapping musical set on the Louisiana bayou in the 1920s, directors Ron Clements and John Musker deliver a satisfying gumbo of snappy dialogue, lovable characters and bright-hued images, spiced up with just the right touch of voodoo peril. Walt Disney Pictures introduces its first African-American princess, Tiana, in ‘The Princess and the Frog.’ Pictured are characters Princess Tiana, left, and Prince Naveen. working waitress Tiana (voiced by Anika Noni Rose), who saves every dime in hopes of opening the restaurant that was the dream of her late father (Terrence Howard). In a small role, Oprah Winfrey provides the voice of Tiana’s mom. Tiana is sidetracked by some dark magic after Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos), a jazz-loving dreamboat from a land far, far away, comes to sample the vibrant New Orleans music. Naveen falls under the spell of voodoo practitioner Dr. Facilier (voiced with oozing menace by Keith David),
who turns the prince into a talking frog as part of a plan to unleash his evil “friends on the other side” in New Orleans. The frog prince encounters Tiana dressed as royalty at a costume ball in the mansion of her childhood pal Charlotte (Jennifer Cody) and her genteel dad (John Goodman). The inevitable kiss Naveen talks Tiana into doesn’t restore his human form, though. Rather, Tiana is transformed into a frog herself, and the two wind up pursued by Facilier’s evil allies through swamp country.
In fine Disney inter-species tradition, Tiana and Naveen find comic sidekicks in Louis (Michael-Leon Wooley), a goofy alligator who dreams of playing trumpet with a jazz band, and Ray (Jim Cummings), a gap-toothed Cajun firefly with a heart as big as the heavens. The songs and score by Disney stalwart Randy Newman, including a tune sung by Dr. John, are brisk and catchy, while there’s plenty of action and slapstick humor for boys and dads in what is largely a love story for girls. Sure, the romance is a little sticky and cloying. But even the hardest of hard cases might sniffle a bit over how the unobtainable love of firefly Ray plays out. Clements and Musker, whose credits include such hits as The Little Mermaid and Aladdin but also the megabomb Treasure Planet, present rich worlds both in the city and on the bayou. Some of the animated sequences are downright trippy — Disney influenced by the wild imagination of such masters as Hayao Miyazaki, whose U.S. releases the studio handles. Like the jerky stop-motion animation of Fantastic Mr. Fox, the silky canvas of Princess and the Frog stands as a nice counterpoint to the sharp virtual worlds of computer imagery that dominate today’s cartoons. Princess and the Frog mostly ignores the racial divides of the times. Tiana’s a poor black girl, her best friend’s a rich, spoiled white girl. How often did that happen in 1920s New Orleans? But this isn’t Roots, it’s a Disney family affair. In her favor, Tiana joins a list of ethnically diverse Disney heroines — Pocahantas, Mulan, Lilo — that show how far things have come from the days when a pasty-faced princess hung out with seven little white dudes.

Oxford’s AmStar Theater promotes new film with charity drive By Erica Long Special to The Star
It’s time to break out the costumes again. Halloween is still just once a year, but area children have another chance to dress up, and this time for a more worthy cause. Quintard Mall’s AmStar Theater is celebrating the opening of Disney’s The Princess and the Frog with a Disney costume contest in support of the United Cerebral Palsy and The Salvation Army. Contestants are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Disney or Pixar character. While there is no registration fee, contestants are asked to bring a canned item, new toy or monetary donation that will be given to either charity organization. Jessica Hanson, manager of AmStar, encourages all children to come out and is welcoming everyone from the community to attend. All the games, food samples and fun will be free before the 11:15 a.m. showing of The Princess and the Frog on Saturday, she wrote in an e-mail. “We have to remember some families are not as fortunate and need extra help to provide a nice Christmas for their family during the holiday season,” she wrote. “Also, this is a particularly special Disney movie as well because it’s the first Disney princess movie in 11 years.” Chick-Fil-A and Firehouse Subs will be available, with Firehouse Subs making a special Cajun treat because the new film is set in Louisiana. There will also be prizes and goodies provided by local merchants. There will also be a balloon bounce and other games and activities set up by AmStar. Donations can be given at the box office or at any of the concession stands. Erica Long is a freelance writer in Oxford.

Brady picks the winning door with ‘Let’s Make a Deal’ By LYNN ELBER Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — Wayne Brady is savoring a big year, with doors opening to him at Carnegie Hall, the White House and, in multiples, on Let’s Make a Deal. The actor-singer-funnyman debuted in October as host of a revival of Monty Hall’s classic game show, riding herd on eager contestants choosing between cash and the chance of prizes tucked, famously, behind door number one, two or three. The game show gig and Brady’s sold-out Carnegie Hall debut in New York followed his White House performance as part of a tribute to Stevie Wonder last February. Carnegie was “a wonderful milestone in my life,” said Brady, who was backed by the New York Pops orchestra for a salute to Sammy Davis Jr. and Sam Cooke. “To be able to do that and to launch what we hope is a successful game show, a bit of iconic American TV, that’s not a bad year.” Hall, a consultant on the new Deal produced by FremantleMedia North America, said a number of contenders were considered and rejected for host of the Las Vegas-based daytime show that airs on CBS (check local listings) from the Tropicana hotel-casino. “We needed someone who could ad lib, be charming, work with contestants and run the show,” Hall said. He’d tried to woo Brady before, without success, but this time prevailed. Brady, who exudes earnest confidence along with that easy charm, says Deal represents another step in building a career as an all-around entertainer in the mold of a Davis or Billy Crystal or John Leguizamo. “I’m an actor first and foremost, who happens to do improv. I’ve also done sitcoms, I’ve done stage,” he said, with TV credits including his 2002-04 talk show and guest shots on 30 Rock, Girlfriends and other series. The Grammy-nominated singer is working on two new CDs, including one he calls a “big band-soul record.” The ultimate goal, he said, is an epitaph in the very distant future that reads, “This guy did just about everything you could do in the entertainment business and was good at it all” — similar to what’s inscribed at Davis’ grave in Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale: “The Entertainer: He Did It All.” Brady, 37, demonstrated his quick wit on Drew Carey’s Whose Line Is It Anyway? and a knack for running a quiz show on Don’t Forget the Lyrics! And he said he doesn’t feel the need to separate himself on Deal from Hall and his reign. “By virtue of me being myself, it’s already different. It’s the host in the middle of an audience and there’s no script, so it’s just me,” he said. “You can’t be Monty Hall;

‘World’ will stop turning in September By Denise Martin Los Angeles Times

Game show host Wayne Brady holds money to give to a contestant on the set of ‘Let’s Make A Deal,’ in Las Vegas, Nev. he had his own very dry thing and a great bearing about him that made you trust him.” “All I can do is make the contestants feel good and be affable and have a good time,” said Brady, noting parallels between hosting and doing improv. “That’s what this show’s about. It’s about contestants and the game. It’s not about a host trying to hog the spotlight.” Although he’s found that some players are less willing to risk losing prize money in the current economy, he’s equally surprised by how many gamble on the tantalizing possibility of a valuable prize versus the risk of a “zonk,” something silly and worthless. “I always thought that common sense would prevail. But on a game show, there is no common sense,” Brady said.
HOLLYWOOD — CBS has pulled the plug on another long-running soap opera. Just three months after Guiding Light aired its final episode, CBS announced Tuesday that it will end As the World Turns in September, after 54 years and more than 13,000 episodes. Its cancellation will leave CBS with just two soaps: daytime’s most-watched serial, The Young and the Restless, and The Bold and the Beautiful. World, which launched in 1956 and is the oldest of the remaining broadcast soap operas, had long been rumored to be the genre’s next casualty. The show averages 2.5 million total viewers this year (down from 2.6 million in 2008), which is less than half of the audience that tunes in to The Young and the Restless, which averages just over 5 million. Lynn Leahey, editorial director of Soap Opera Digest, said the move does not come as a surprise for daytime industry observers. “Still, it’s a punch in the gut for fans,” she said. “This is a show they’ve been holding near and dear for decades.” World follows the denizens of small town Oakdale, Ill., and has seen such actors as Marisa Tomei, Meg Ryan and James Earl Jones come through town. CBS declined comment, but in a statement Barbara Bloom, senior vice president of daytime programming, said, “The almanacs will show As the World Turns as a pioneer of the format, a hallmark for quality with its numerous Emmys, the launching pad for many television and film stars and a daytime ratings powerhouse for parts of three decades.” But the bottom line, Leahey said, is “As the World Turns just isn’t making money.” Soap operas’ viewership has been in a steady decline for decades and in more recent years has plummeted as more women have joined the workforce and the number of cable outlets and entertainment choices has exploded. Meanwhile, daytime has seen success with talk shows and other less expensive formats, while serials require much larger budgets for their big ensemble casts, producers and writers. Most daytime soaps have issued major pay cuts in recent years; in October, longtime The Young and the Restless star Eric Braeden publicly threatened to leave the show after being asked to take yet another cut to what is reportedly a seven-figure salary. (He and Y&R producer Sony eventually came to an agreement.) Also, in a cost-cutting move, ABC is planning to move All My Children from New York to California at the end of the year, according to sources at the show. The decision will save an estimated $10 million annually for the company, which both owns and produces the show, according to sources.

Kristen Wiig to host a ‘SNL’ Christmas special as Gilly By JAKE COYLE Associated Press
NEW YORK — Kristen Wiig’s recurring character Gilly might not seemed filled with holiday cheer, yet NBC is turning to her to
host a Saturday Night Live Christmas special. SNL Presents: A Very Gilly Christmas will air Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. The twohour special, the first for SNL since 2002, will be led by Wiig’s Gilly, an ever-

smiling Annie-lookalike who delights in violent mischief. The special will feature new sketches with Gilly and highlights of classic holiday SNL sketches. Wiig, roundly considered a standout performer on the NBC sketch comedy show, has built Gilly into a popular character. In a phone interview Monday, she said part of the fun of Gilly hosting is in her slim vocabulary, which consists mainly of the simple catchphrase “Sorry.” “That can be a tough one to work around,” Wiig said. “There’s going to be no long monologue. Maybe her five-word vocabulary will stretch to 10 or 11.” A Gilly sketch is a very structured thing. It’s always set in a classroom where an uncertain teacher (Will Forte) questions his students (Kenan Thompson, Bobby Moynihan) on the source of some trouble making. Wiig and Paula Pell, a writer on the show, came up with the sketch while

We just started saying ‘Sorry,’ and it came organically from there.” Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin will also make guest appearances on the special to help introduce clips they’ve appeared in as hosts, including Baldwin in “NPR’s Delicious Dish and the Schweddy Balls” and Martin in “A Holiday Wish.” If pressed for a holiday favorite, Wiig cites John Malkovich’s maniacal reading of “`Twas the Night Before Christmas” last year. “Since SNL has been on for so long, it’s 35 years of at least two or three shows a year kind of based on Christmas stuff,” said Wiig. “There’s a lot of good material there.”
