King Sister Yvonne Burch dies at age 89 SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Yvonne King Burch, who gained early fame as one of the singing King Sisters during the big band era before launching her entire extended musical clan into show business as the King Family, has died. She was 89. Mrs. Burch died in a Santa Barbara hospital Sunday, where she was taken for injuries she suffered in a fall last week, said her daughter, Tina Cole. She spent three decades singing and recording with the King Sisters, one of the most popular vocal groups of the 1930s and 1940s. A Grammy nomination for their Capitol Records album Imagination capped the group’s career in 1959.

‘American Idol’ creator announces ‘Dream’ project LOS ANGELES — The creator of American Idol is going beyond TV with a project that will tell the story of five young people trying to make it in Hollywood with online audience feedback. Starting in early 2010, Simon Fuller’s If I Can Dream will follow three aspiring actors, a model and a musician whose experiences will be streamed live. Viewers will have a chance to comment on what they see, and influence it, through blogs, MySpace, Twitter and Facebook. If I Can Dream will launch across multiple platforms, including mobile handsets and radio. An edited episode will be available weekly on Hulu.com and distributed internationally. — Associated Press

With vinyl gaining more favor, young customers are trickling in to record store By Carol Fletcher The Record (Hackensack, N.J.)

GARFIELD, N.J. — Looking for that hard-to-find song made before a performer became big? Chances are it’s among the hundreds of thousands of vinyl records swelling the shelves, stacks and boxes in Charlie Rigolosi’s store. The 83-year-old music collector has run Platter World since 1975, selling used records that are usually out of print, such as an original, 7-inch acetate recording from the 1960s of Jimi Hendrix’s guitar work on “As the Clouds Drift By,” a song performed by film star Jayne Mansfield at a Manhattan recording studio. “There’s always someone looking for a special song, and chances are I got it for them,” said Rigolosi. “And that makes me happy.” Platter World evolved from Rigolosi’s lifelong hobby of collecting records. It began as a mail-order business and claimed a permanent spot in an indoor flea market after he retired from his job as chef at a local restaurant. He opened the store around 1984. Vinyl “platters” hang on the walls and from the ceiling as mobiles. A clothesline swings down the middle of the store holding hard-to-find used records, such as Victory at Sea in Jazz by the Aaron Bell Orchestra for $18. In the digital age of CDs and downloading music, business has slowed substantially, said Rigolosi, but he finds new ways to serve customers. He says vinyl is gaining favor among the least likely: people in their 20s. Young adults come to the store searching for the vinyl version of classic rock or other music they’re downloading, songs such as “In-A-Gadda-DaVida” by Iron Butterfly, because vinyl is a novelty to them, he said. “That helps me a lot,” Rigolosi said. “You’ve got to go with it. You can’t fight it.” He talked about the two boys who

Rigolosi has found new customers among seniors who find they need CDs when they buy new cars. They ask him to make CDs of music they want or already have, because Rigolosi can record from vinyl, cassettes or reel-to-reel tape. Disc jockeys have also become loyal fans and buy the larger 78 rpm records because the grooves hold a greater range of high and low notes than digital media, Rigolosi said. Finally, he’s seeing parents with teenage children who are buying the classic rock they grew up with and the kids are picking up on their interest, he said. With his vast collection, Rigolosi can cater to unusual customers, such as the artist who’s been commissioned to cover the interior of a home in Manhattan like

the Sistine Chapel with specific album covers and bought about $150 worth of vinyl. A key to his survival is a collection that includes classical, big-band, jazz, rhythm and blues, doo-wop, comedy, country, movie soundtracks, spoken word, international music and rock. Rock is the most popular, he said. His oldest record? A 1904 track of Enrico Caruso, considered a pioneer of vocal recordings. Michael Jackson, however, has been the most popular recently, and his solo albums and those when he was with the Jackson 5 line the wall behind the counter. Rigolosi had an opportunity to sell his business three years ago, but at the last minute the potential buyers drastically reduced the price they said they would pay, Rigolosi said. “I got so mad it rejuvenated me,” he said. “I’m so glad I didn’t sell. It keeps me young.”

Rock Hall takes a chance on ABBA, Genesis, Stooges Associated Press CLEVELAND — ABBA is dancing its way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, The Hollies and The Stooges. The list of the next class of inductees was released Tuesday by the Cleveland hall. ABBA and The Stooges made it in this time after being nominated previously but not making the cut. ABBA, a Swedish pop group that became one of the most successful acts in pop history, continues to sell millions of records each year and has been finding new fans through the popularity of Mamma Mia, a stage musical and film incorporating its songs, including “Dancing Queen,” “Money, Money, Money” and “The Winner Takes It All.” ABBA’s name is an acronym formed from the first names of band members Agnetha Faltskog, Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Annifrid Lyngstad. They broke up in 1982 and have resisted reunion offers. Genesis began in the late 1960s as an art-rock act fronted by Peter Gabriel and evolved after his 1975 departure into a more mainstream act, with drummer Phil Collins taking over as lead singer. Some of the

band’s more familiar songs include “Follow You, Follow Me,” “Tonight Tonight Tonight” and “Invisible Touch.” Cliff, a Jamaican singer, is credited with introducing reggae music to a broader audience through his album The Harder They Come and the movie of the same name, in which he starred in the early 1970s. Part of the British Invasion, the Hollies had a long string of pop hits in the 1960s characterized by the threepart harmonies of original members Allan Clarke, Graham Nash and Eric Haydock. Led by the Iggy Pop, The Stooges came sneering out of Ann Arbor, Mich., in the late ’60s with a primal, growling sound that paved the way for punk, new wave, grunge and other, edgier music genres. The Rock Hall also announced that its Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers would go to music industry executive David Geffen, the songwriting teams of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry, and individual songwriters Jesse Stone, Mort Shuman and Otis Blackwell. Ertegun, the founder and chairman of Atlantic Records, died in 2006. The hall’s 25th annual induction ceremony is scheduled for March 15 in New York City.

NEW YORK — Nick Jonas is used to performing in front of screaming fans who know all the words to their favorite Jonas Brothers songs. Now his new band, Nick Jonas & The Administration, is getting ready to perform as the house band for the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards on Jan. 15 in Los Angeles. The band will be expected to not only entertain but also keep the pace of the show moving. “I’m excited and honored. ... We’ll be performing a lot of covers. Intros and outros to the commercials. I think we have about 25 songs to learn,” Jonas said in a recent interview. The 17-year-old singer-musician calls his band a side project. They will record an album, Jonas said, but he will continue to record music with his brothers Kevin and Joe of the Jonas Brothers. Since the awards show will be about movies, Jonas said his favorite film of 2009 was The Invention of Lying, which he described as “funny” and “fantastic.” “I love Ricky Gervais,” he said. He is also a big fan of George Clooney. “I don’t know if he’ll be there (in the audience at the awards show) but I just saw ‘Up in the Air’ and thought it was great,” Jonas said. The awards are presented by the Broadcast Film Critics Association.

Boxed set rescues Yiddish obscurities Various Artists Cantors, Klezmorim and Crooners 1905-1953: Classic Yiddish 78s from the Mayrent Collection Moishe Oysher! Is there another name as redolent of Jewish life of an age past? And yet, the man himself — seventh-generation cantor, star of film and record and concert hall — is nearly forgotten, his golden voice relegated to fragile 78s locked away in dusty basements and attics. The new three-disc set, Cantors, Klezmorim and Crooners 1905-1953: Classic Yiddish 78s from the Mayrent Collection, digs deep into the archive of early 20th century Yiddish music and rescues Oysher and the many other talented musicians from obscurity. The 67 cuts are culled from the 5,000 discs collected by clarinetist and record producer Sherry Mayrent, lovingly transferred digitally and reproduced in a handsome boxed set with notes by the renowned klezmer maven Henry

Sapoznik. There are operatic prayers sung by cantors like Pierre Pinchik and Gershon Sirota, with accompaniment unimaginable in shul; there are klezmer legends like Dave Tarras and Abe Schwartz; there are singers well known (Sophie Tucker) and forgotten (the Bagelman Sisters, later somewhat better known as the Barry Sisters). There are comedy routines. And there are curiosities, like a snippet of writer Sholom Aleichem talking. And there is Moishe Oysher. Listen to his rendition of “Chasidic in America” with his wife, Florence Weiss. For sheer exuberance, it is unmatched. — Jerry Schwartz, Associated Press

Robin Thicke has ladies on his mind, in his music Robin Thicke Sex Therapy: The Session For the boys at least, increasingly absurdist boasts regarding one’s prowess between the sheets defined R&B in 2009. Jeremih swears that his touch is the ideal birthday present. Trey Songz claims you’ll believe he invented the act itself. Even 50 Cent used the prospect of his future child-support checks as a pickup line. Until Sex Therapy, his latest album, Robin Thicke hadn’t really played that game. But as he puts it in the liner notes, “my guilty pleasures have been outweighing my good health.” This is his babymaking album, and although Thicke’s freak flag is PG-13, his new randiness adds zip to an always-perfect falsetto. On the crackling soul jam “Mrs. Sexy,” he’s promising to “buy you a ring and make you Mrs. Sexy,” presumably because his bachelorhood as Mr. Sexy

was unfulfilling. “Make U Love Me” makes fine use of Neptunesish brittle synths and a pingponging bass line. Thicke fares less well competing with radio’s harder fare: the club banger “Shakin’ It 4 Daddy” is declasse by his standards, and his Ne-Yo leaning disco number “Rollacoasta” is a touch decarbonated. But when he says “I’m like Bigfoot, the man your momma said don’t exist,” you may crack up, but you’ll still get in the cab with him at the end of the night. — August Brown, Los Angeles Times

Keys’ newest flows well, but still average Alicia Keys The Element of Freedom On Alicia Keys’ previous CDs, the gifted singer-songwriter-pianist presented songs that were epic and impeccable — moreso than her actual albums. Tunes like “Fallin’,” “If I Ain’t Got You” and “Like You’ll Never See Me Again” are timeless grooves that helped make the R&B singer a global, Grammy-winning superstar. What’s unfortunate is that The Element of Freedom, Keys’ fourth studio release, does not have a jam as outstanding as her past hits. Most of the songs are mediocre, like the first single, the emptysounding “Doesn’t Mean Anything.” Even her duet with Beyonce on the Swizz Beatz-produced “Put It In a Love Song,” is a disappointment — it’s an amateurish dance tune on which the guest overpowers the main star. Perhaps the best thing you can say

about Freedom is that the songs mesh well, and create a smooth sound, albeit weak one. Of course, Keys’ soaring voice always shines, even on so-so songs. It especially stands out on the yearning “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready),” the gloomy but groovy opening track, “Love Is Blind” and “Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart,” an elevated drum-filled pop ballad that showcases the singer’s versatility.

In new Animal Collective, sweet battles dark psychedelia Animal Collective Fall Be Kind On this five-song EP mostly culled from outtakes from Merriweather Post Pavilion, Animal Collective’s most recent and most successful record, David “Avey Tare” Portner, Noah “Panda Bear” Lennox and Brian “Geologist” Weitz continue their delicate balance between creepy-crawly sweetness and bubbling, dark psychedelia. After all, if it didn’t mix the uncomfortable with the transcendent, it wouldn’t be Brooklyn’s Animal Collective. There’s not a cut here that will make anyone think differently about the Baltimore-born outfit, but it’s a worthy addition to the catalog. Fall Be Kind coalesces around the band’s sonic staples, leaning particularly toward Panda Bear’s dreamy aesthetic: anchoring polyrhythms, nether-worldly textures and amber-warm vocals with a few new tricks thrown in. “What Would I Want? Sky,” which uses the first-ever licensed Grateful Dead sample as a recurring motif, shows off the band’s talents at creating near-mystical transitions. It opens with burbling,

shivery synths pillowing around trancedout vocals — it’s a sonic palette that could stir amorous feelings in beluga whales. But before it slips down an oceanic black hole, the song breaks into a warm groove framing Avey’s relatable lyrics, punctuated by a taxi driver’s scold to “stop daydreaming, dude!” While Animal Collective’s strengths are not usually to be found in their words, the lyrics do lend a welcome humanizing quality to the sometimesalien ruptures that characterize Animal Collective’s sound. “Somehow I feel hopeful,” Avey and Panda sing on “Bleed,” and it sounds like the lovely truth.

Sandra Bullock hitched her career to writer and later writer-director Marc Lawrence when he scripted Forces of Nature. She stayed with him through the Miss Congeniality hits and up to Two Weeks Notice (2002). Then Bullock weaned herself from Lawrence’s brand of gimmicky, wan and witless comedies and lived to stage a comeback this year. But Bullock passed Lawrence on, like a bad penny, to Hugh Grant, her co-star in Two Weeks Notice. And Grant can’t seem to kick the Lawrence habit. Did You Hear About the Morgans?, Grant’s third film with Lawrence, may be his overdue intervention. Unfunny and tone-deaf, it pairs Grant with Sarah Jessica Parker, with whom he has no chemistry, and gives neither of them anything funny to say or play. She’s a star of the New York real-estate market. He’s a rich attorney. They have assistants (Elisabeth Moss and Jesse Liebman) who hate each other, too. They’re separated. He’s trying to get her back. But he cheated and she’s not having him. Darned if his one shot at a reconciliation dinner doesn’t end with a murder that they witness. Since the

killer is on the loose, the Feds ship them off — “Witness Relocation Program” slickers hiding amongst the RedState rubes of Ray, Wyoming. The first people they meet are the law enforcement couple who will be their hosts, played by a twinkly Sam Elliott and a pistol-packing Mary Steenburgen. “Oh my God, it’s Sarah Palin!” Most of the movie is made up of pained conversations over trust between two people who don’t click, on any level. In between heart-to-hearts, they make tired observations about life outside of Manhattan. “I can’t breathe,” Meryl wheezes. “The air’s too clean!” The only moments that have a prayer of clicking in this fish-out-of-water comedy concern the few good actors cast in Wyoming supporting roles — grizzled Elliott, common-sense Steenburgen and Wilford Brimley, a local grandpa grump, a true Westerner and hater of big-city Democrats. Lawrence’s recycled observations of the virtues of rural life, his struggles to find something funny about local “types” (an unworldly doctor and his naive-nitwit nurse), his “grizzly encounter” scene, are painful to watch. The way this witless “Witness” works is that the hit-man tracks them down to Wyoming, but Lawrence fails to find humor or menace in that. His ineptitude extends to knowing when to end this too-predictable fiasco. But with luck Grant, whose options on the romantic comedy front have narrowed, will finally snap out of it after this. The best thing that could happen to Hugh is if nobody hears about the Morgans.

BERLIN — Roman Polanski’s latest movie, The Ghost Writer, will have its world premiere at the Berlin film festival in February, organizers said Tuesday. Polanski’s movie was among a first batch of entries in the festival’s main program that was announced Tuesday — among them a premiere of Martin Scorsese’s thriller Shutter Island. The event is the first of the year’s major European film festivals and runs from Feb. 11-21. The Ghost Writer stars Pierce Brosnan as a former British prime minister who is writing his memoirs with the help of a ghostwriter, played by Ewan McGregor. It is Polanski’s first film since 2005’s Oliver Twist. The 76-year-old director is currently under house arrest in Switzerland, where he awaits possible extradition to the United States on a 32-yearold charge of sexual misconduct. Scorsese’s Shutter Island will screen out of competition in Berlin. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio and also features Ben Kingsley, Patricia Clarkson, Jackie Earle Haley and Michelle Williams. Based on a novel by Mystic River author Dennis Lehane, Shutter Island follows the investigation into the disappearance of a murderess from a mental institution. This year’s competition “will be marked by a mix of styles and genres, by exciting newcomers and renowned directors,” festival director Dieter Kosslick said. The 2010 event is the 60th. Other entries announced Tuesday include Iranian director Rafi Pitts’ The Hunter and On the Path from Bosnian-born director Jasmila Zbanic, whose Grbavica won the Berlin festival’s top Golden Bear award in 2006. Indian filmmaker Karan Johar’s My name is Khan will be shown out of competition. More competition entries are to be announced next month. The festival jury will be led by veteran German-born filmmaker Werner Herzog.

‘The Hangover’: Even more of the morning-after By Jen Chaney The Washington Post

At first beer-goggled glance, The Hangover looks like yet another vulgar comedy about arrested-adolescent, 30-something men who revel in shirking their adult responsibilities so they can over-imbibe with their buddies. And in some ways it is. This dark portrait of the fuzzy, increasingly frightening aftermath of a Las Vegas bachelor party features its share of bare backsides, bad words and blackouts caused by excessive alcohol consumption. But The Hangover — released Tuesday

in a special “unrated” edition on DVD ($35) and Blu-ray ($36), as well as a standard single DVD ($28) and Blu-ray ($35) with limited extras — rises several notches above the lowbrow simply by daring to subvert familiar genres. It’s a one-nightof-bacchanalia flick, in which we skip all the drunken revelry and go right to the memory-challenged morning-after. Actually, that off-center originality may be what turned The Hangover into one of 2009’s biggest hits, one of the topgrossing comedies of all time (it raked in almost $300 million at the box office) and a film honored by the AFI as one of the year’s best.

coming to dvd dec. 22 All About Steve This gruesome, almost perversely un-funny movie about a crossword puzzle constructor who obsessively follows a man across the country, may get an asterisk on Sandra Bullock’s resume as the most misguided move of her career. Bullock’s Mary Magdalene Horowitz chases a news cameraman named Steve (Bradley Cooper), whom she nearly mauls on a blind date before they even pull away from the curb. The movie is by turns cruel and unusual, culminating in a tortured critique of contemporary media and conformism. Thomas Haden Church provides a few laughs as a vain newscaster, but buying Bullock as a hapless nerd is simply asking too much.

District 9 The poison that permeates this phenomenal film is the same toxin that defined so much of 20th-century history: the oppression of the Other — in this case, scaly aliens with feelers for faces and a mother ship that has been hovering over Johannesburg for 20 years. The

underlying gravitas of the story, in which aliens are warehoused in camps and used for gruesome experiments, keeps director Neill Blomkamp’s film smart. As the craven corporate tool Wikus van de Merwe, acting newcomer Sharlto Copley is nothing short of revelatory. Wikus is assigned to move the aliens from their ramshackle township to tent cities that are, in fact, concentration camps. The aliens are hard to like, but we like them, just as we end up liking Wikus and rooting for the demise of Greater Human Civilization.

When a film brashly asserts that it will change moviemaking forever, one feels the urge to either take its “king of the world” arrogance down a notch or hail it as the masterpiece it claims to be. But — and forgive us if this sounds too much like the dialogue in President Obama’s war room — what if there’s a third option? James Cameron’s 3-D Avatar has all the smack of a Film Not To Miss — a movie whose effects are clearly revolutionary, a spectacle that millions will find adventure in. But it nevertheless feels unsatisfying and somehow lacks the pulse of a truly alive film. Avatar takes place in the year 2154 on the faraway moon of Pandora, where, befitting its mythological name, the ills of human life have been released. The Earth depleted, humans have arrived to mine an elusive mineral, wryly dubbed Unobtainium. The Resources Developmental Administration, a kind of military contractor, is running the operation. At the top of the chain of command is the CEO-like Carter Selfridge (an excellent, ruthless Giovanni Ribisi), who’s hellbent on showing quarterly profits for shareholders. His muscle and head of security is the rock-jawed Col. Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), who curses Pandora’s inhabitants (the Na’vi) as savages and considers the place worse than hell. In fact, it’s a paradise. In Pandora, Cameron has fashioned a sensual, neon-colored, dreamlike world of lush

jungle, gargantuan trees and floating mountains. Its splendor is easily the most wondrous aspect of Avatar. Our main character is Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a brawny former Marine who lost the power of his legs in battle on Earth. His scientist twin brother has just died and Sully, having a matching genome, is invited to replace him in a mission to Pandora. He joins a small group of scientists led by Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) who are attempting to learn more about the Na’vi by conducting field studies and doing a bit of undercover science. They’ve created avatars of themselves to go about Pandora as a living, breathing Na’vi, while their human bodies lie dormant in a sort of tanning bed (they return to them when their avatars sleep). Avatar, which Cameron wrote as well as directed, is essentially a fairy tale that imagines a more favorable outcome for the oppressed fighting against the technology and might of Western Civilization. Sully, who quickly takes to life as a Na’vi, begins to feel his allegiances blurred. Though he has promised Quaritch to spy on the Na’vi (their home lies atop an Unobtainium deposit), he begins to appreciate their ways. He also falls for Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), the Na’vi princess and the one who introduces him to the tribe. The movie is also a notable advance for performance capture, which is how the Na’vi were created. The Na’vi were made with cameras and sensors recording movements of actors and transposing them onto CGI creatures. Seldom has this been done in a way that captured the most important thing — the eyes — but Cameron employed a new technology (a camera rigged like a helmet on the actors) to capture their faces up close. The green, flickering eyes of the Na’vi are a big step forward, but there’s still an unmistakable emptiness to a movie so filled with digital creations.

LONDON — Earlier this month, James Cameron and Sigourney Weaver were discussing their relationship in London, after reuniting for another sci-fi adventure, Avatar. The 60-year-old actress plays scientist Grace Augustine, who takes on a 10-foot alien form in order to explore the planet Pandora. The Associated Press: Before Sigourney gets here, what do you think about the work you achieved together in Aliens with the strong female action character? Cameron: It redefined strength. It wasn’t just about physically kicking butt, it was about having the emotional strength. It’s not about being strong and being fearless, it’s what you do in the face of fear. And that’s what that movie was all about. (Weaver arrives) AP: We were talking just before you came in about when you first met. He was telling me the story about wondering what shoes you were going to wear and how he was judging you. Weaver: (Laughs) I had forgotten about that. Cameron: I knew you were 6-foot-8 or whatever. Weaver: Almost avatar size. Cameron: Exactly, and so it was with some trepidation that I was meeting you because I wanted the meeting to go well. I really wanted to make the movie, I thought we could do something pretty amazing together. I didn’t know if it would be a combative relationship or one where you felt proprietary control of the character. I couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised at how much fun you thought the script was going to be. Weaver: What astonished me just reading it, before I’d even met you, was that you knew more about Ripley than I did. And I don’t know how you were able to channel all that and come up with this amazing scenario of this woman, moved to another time, so isolated and no one would believe her and no one would give her a break and it was such a fantastic beginning to a story about a character. Cameron: It’s interesting both Grace and Ripley are characters that are not believed by the male power structure. And I think that women feel that they’re not listened to, that their outlook on a situation or their analysis of a situation is not as credible as a male perspective, whether it’s in business or whether it’s in a relationship. AP: Why do you think you’re able to understand women and female characters like that? Cameron: My mother is a good role model, she raised five kids old school. She indulged in and supported my artistic endeavors so that may be part of it. Maybe it’s because I was a nerdy kid and wasn’t the captain of the football team and if I wanted to have a date ... I’d better start figuring out how women thought.

Local singer/songwriter Parks releases sophomore album By Deirdre Long dlong@annistonstar.com

Growing up, Abby Parks didn’t have a permanent home. The daughter of a civilian who worked for the Army, Parks, born in Durham, N.C., traveled across the country and world with her family before settling down in a permanent teaching gig at The Donoho School in Anniston. Parks’ sophomore album, The Homeplace, is a kind of remembrance of her past and life in the South, a collection of stories woven into songs with a strong folk feel to them. The Homeplace is a real place for Parks. When she was a child living in Atlanta, she remembers going down to “the country,” the term for her grandmother’s house, and having big family congregations with aunts, uncles and cousins. The title song, “Wild Dogs” and “Lambert Road” are all pulled from Parks’ family history, some originally were poems she wrote about her mom’s family. “Some of the songs are true stories or true stories with a twist,” Parks says of the album. “There’s a little bit of heritage thrown in there, too.” Parks’ musical style had a lot of influence from her parents. Growing up in the ‘70s, she listened to bands such as Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, the Doobie Brothers and singers such as Joni Mitchell. “I rediscovered Joni for myself in the ‘80s,” Parks said. “I loved her lyric writing and use of chords — it’s not the typical folk chords. I don’t try and emulate her, necessarily, but she’s definitely had an influence on my style.” Her first guitar was a 12th birthday present from her parents — a nylon-string classical guitar that she still owns today, and that she loans to her students if they need it. While she did take guitar lessons, her first foray into classical guitar came by her own doing. She became enamored with the music of classical guitarist John Michael Talbot, a Catholic musician who has released several Christian albums. By listening to Talbot, Parks taught herself the classical guitar and kept that up until she went to college and learned finger picking. Most of Parks’ formal training came from classes at Colorado Christian University, just west of Denver. That’s when one of her instructors first suggested that she should teach guitar. Parks didn’t really think about teaching until she moved to Mildenhall, England, with her family. There on the Army base she saw an ad on a bulletin board for a guitar teacher, which she applied for. Then she started putting up her own ads across the base offering lessons. “I had 15 students at one time — that was a big deal, but now I’ve had 55 at one time before,” she said. Parks’ family returned to the States and settled in Alabama, and the guitarist enrolled at Jacksonville State University with a double major in English and guitar. Upon graduation, she received a called from The Donoho School about an open position as a guitar teacher. Somehow in between her lessons, Parks found time to travel to Huntsville to record The Homeplace at Soundcell Studio with Doug Jansen Smith, who has worked with Brian

Anniston singer/songwriter Abby Parks recently released her sophomore album, ‘The Homeplace.’ McKnight, Take 6, Willie Nelson and Phil Collins. This album was the first time Parks had worked with other musicians and a producer with so much experience. She was ecstatic when she listened to the finished recording of “Wild Dogs,” her first single release off the album. “I drove home from Huntsville and stuck it in the CD player and played it over and over again,” she said. “I love the rhythm section, especially on the chorus.” Smith was impressed by Parks’ vision for the album and with her moving lyrics. While she helped push Smith and the other producers in the right direction, she was also accommodating to changes and flexible with new ideas. “It was a great collaboration on everybody’s part,” Smith said in a phone interview earlier this week. “Her lyrics are intelligent … they ask the audience to pay attention. She should be able to develop her own following and find them to be loyal.” Now that the album is complete, Parks is spending her time promoting The Homeplace with shows in Alabama and Georgia, the next of which is Jan. 16 at the Local Color Café in Springville. She is concentrating on performing at festivals across the Southeast and some of the larger cities, such as Atlanta and Birmingham. “The cities are where you’re more likely to get noticed,” Parks said. “I have a desire to get out of my own town and travel around the Southeast and let people know who I am.” The Homeplace is available online at www.abbyparks. com.

It’s easy to take a series like “The Legend of Zelda” for granted. The first game arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, and with more than a dozen releases over 23 years, even the most dedicated “Zelda” fan can be forgiven for having skipped a game or two. Some of those games — the original and 1998’s “Ocarina of Time” — are justly regarded as landmarks. Some admirers prefer darker-tinged entries like 2000’s “Majora’s Mask” and 2006’s “Twilight Princess.” The one title that divided “Zelda” loyalists most was 2003’s “The Wind Waker,” which gave protagonist Link a younger, more cartoony appearance. “The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks” (Nintendo, for the DS, $34.99) follows directly from 2007’s “Phantom Hourglass” and shares the cel-shaded look of “The Wind Waker.” That cuteness factor may fool you into thinking “Spirit Tracks” is kid’s stuff, but be warned: It features some of the most ornery puzzles in the history of the franchise. After all these years, Nintendo still has some fresh tricks up its sleeve. The biggest change is that Link has traded in his boat for a train, although navigation — you draw your route with the DS stylus — is similar to the technique in “Phantom Hourglass.” The train is likely to divide fans again: Some will enjoy chugging around the mythical land of Hyrule, but I found it tedious. The other big change is that Princess Zelda is finally a playable character — sort of. A ghostly form of the princess follows Link around, and in some dun-

And then there’s the Spirit Flute, which awakens statues, uncovers treasures and restores missing railroad tracks. You have to blow into the DS microphone to play the flute, and it’s one of the most irritating uses of technology that Nintendo has ever devised. Indeed, “Spirit Tracks” is filled with such nagging aggravations. It’s controlled entirely by a stylus, which is a cute way of showing off the DS technology, but sometimes you’d rather move Link around with the old-fashioned directional buttons. And at least a couple of hours

are spent backtracking to sites you’ve already visited. But the core elements of any “Zelda” game are as strong as ever. There are charming characters, witty dialogue and a compelling story. Discovering new territory — and the tools you need to conquer it — is as thrilling as ever. And the dungeons are filled with clever challenges that seem unsolvable at first — until you get that satisfying “aha” moment. “Spirit Tracks” isn’t one of those landmark “Zelda” games, but it is a worthy addition to the canon. Even though Link is well into his third decade, he’s aging well. Three stars out of four.

Google employees testing new mobile device Associated Press LOS ANGELES — Google Inc.’s employees are testing a new mobile device that runs on the company’s Android operating system, as the search giant continues its push into the wireless market and toward more direct competition with Apple Inc.’s iPhone. In a blog post Saturday, Google said the new device

combines hardware built by an unnamed partner with its Android software. The free software is crucial in Google’s efforts to make its search engine and other services as accessible on cell phones as they already are on personal computers. Google handed the device out to employees across the globe so they could “experiment with new mobile features and capabilities,” and

give quick feedback on the new technology, said Mario Queiroz, vice president of product management, said on the company’s blog. The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources, reported Sunday that Google plans to sell the phone directly to consumers, instead of through a wireless carrier. Such a move would mean Google would go head-tohead with Apple’s iPhone and

Research in Motion’s Blackberry, as well as current makers of Android phones. Mountain View, Calif.based Google launched its first Android phone in September 2008, the G1 sold by T-Mobile USA. Verizon Wireless last month released the Droid, the first smart phone to run Android 2.0, and expects to launch another Android phone this year.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Up in the Air landed at just the right time, emerging as a potential Academy Awards favorite with themes of job loss and economic calamity that offer a heartbreaking yet hilarious reflection of these hard times. The film grabbed a leading six Golden Globe nominations Tuesday, including best drama, plus directing and screenplay honors for Jason Reitman. George Clooney earned a best dramatic actor slot as a frequent-flyer junkie traveling the country in first-class seats and premium car rentals as he fires the rank-and-file at downsizing companies. “We just got a little lucky. Jason’s been writing this movie for like six or seven years now and it only really came about right at this moment, and he kind of adapted the screenplay to fit the times,” said Anna Kendrick, a supporting-actress nominee as a bright young efficiency expert whose innovations threaten the livelihood of Clooney’s character. “I think it’s a better movie for that.”

Other drama picks were the space fantasy Avatar, the Iraq War tale The Hurt Locker, the World War II saga Inglourious Basterds and the Harlem teen story Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. Hollywood’s second biggest film honors after the Academy Awards, the Globes are a key ceremony that sort out the prospects leading up to the Oscar nominations Feb. 2. The 67th annual Globes will be handed out Jan. 17, six days before voting closes for the Oscar nominations. Up in the Air has had a glowing reception from critics and awards watchers since it debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, where Reitman also premiered his two earlier features, Thank You for Smoking and Juno. Audiences have crowded theaters for the film, which so far has been playing in limited release before it expands nationwide Dec. 23. Up in the Air is based on the novel by Walter Kirn, published in 2001, months before the loose and easy air travel the book depicts was changed forever by security clampdowns after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The novel also came years before the recession. Reitman started working on his big-screen adaptation six years ago, giving it a lighter touch for the flush times back then. As the economy tanked, the film took on a weightier tone. Reitman incorporated today’s prevailing employment insecurity and shot segments with real people who had lost their jobs, their painful remarks and recollections woven throughout the narrative. Reitman’s father — Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, who was a producer on Up in the Air — said the film reflects not only the financial crisis, but also the way modern times alienate people from personal interaction. Clooney’s Ryan Bingham revels in his solitary traveling life, a master of the angles to build his flyer account toward a lofty but ultimately meaningless goal of 10 million miles. Yet he’s a man who has left his human connections on the ground. “It seems sort of very apt,” Ivan Reitman said. “The way we keep isolating ourselves more behind technology, behind getting trapped in a kind of loneliness that seems unique for our times.”

LOS ANGELES — The mood on the set was appropriately gleeful. The musical-dramedy Glee got some serious Golden Globe love Tuesday, with more nominations than any show. Among the Fox series’ four nominations: best television series — comedy or musical. On the Paramount Studios lot, where Glee is filmed, the show’s cast could be found Tuesday hugging and laughing after hearing the news. “Amazing,” said Corey Monteith, who plays football hunk Finn Hudson. “It is kind of like it is like Christmas morning.” “The four best presents ever,” added actor Kevin McHale. Besides the nod to the series, Glee received nominations for Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele, two Broadway veterans who are TV newcomers. Veteran stage and screen actress Jane Lynch also earned a bid for best supporting actress in a series, miniseries or movie. “I slept through (the nominations announcement),” Lynch said. “But, I got up to six messages and went, ‘Ah! I wonder if there is some good news for us?’ And there was. My agent called me three times and said, ‘Why aren’t you up?’ So, yeah. I called my mom, and she said,

‘The golden what?”’ Michele said she and her mother used to dress up just to watch awards shows at home. So, no surprise that Michele was at a loss for words upon hearing of her nomination. “I can’t, I can’t even believe it,” said Michele, also a Tony nominee for Spring Awakening. “My mother just said to me, ‘When I get out of this shock, I will congratulate you properly.’ I think when I snap out of this shock, I don’t know when it is going to happen, but if someone here hears a scream somewhere in L.A. at any point, it is probably me finally realizing what actually is happening.” Glee creator Ryan Murphy already has a Golden Globe, for his drama series Nip/Tuck, but said he’s still excited about next month’s Globe ceremony. “You know, it is like a high-school prom,” he said. “And I remember when I was in high school I was the president of the Meryl Streep fan club. So, when we won for Nip/Tuck, and I got up to accept it, there was Meryl Streep right in front of me.” Murphy and his cast are busy filming the second half of the first season of Glee. New episodes won’t be unveiled until spring 2010, including an all-Madonna episode and an appearance by Wicked Tony winner Idina Menzel.
