And Liam will start over, like Noah, in a final, sentimental scene that is as risky and as right as anything in Tyler’s other books.

If Noah’s Compass ends with a little heartbreak, well, that’s the way things often turn out. For Anne Tyler, all we can do is emulate Noah: Take a few things along on our journey, keep ourselves afloat the best we can and hope that the new worlds we embark upon have room for not only who we’ve been, but for who we hope we’ve become.

Missing-persons novel misses mark The Disappeared by M.R. Hall; Simon and Schuster, 2009; 399 pages; $24.99 Reviewed by Lance Hicks For his debut in the United States, M.R. Hall appears to be trying to introduce Jenny Cooper (the heroin of The Coroner, his first novel) to a whole new audience with his appropriately titled second novel, The Disappeared.

In this particular installment, Jenny is six months into her job as coroner for a backwater district of Britain when she agrees to go far beyond protocol and spearhead an inquest over the possible deaths of two local students of Middle Eastern descent.

It’d be nice to say this is the point in the book when everything gets exciting, but it doesn’t, which is only one of the many problems that plague this particular crime novel.

It can be reasonably argued that the use of wordy text in a crime novel can help some of the genre’s trademark tech-

nical terms fit better into the structure of an author’s stylistic flow.

Unfortunately, in the case of The Disappeared, Hall’s language is so verbose that his overall presentation becomes increasingly dry and forced as the plot progresses.

Without the advent of a little common language to give Hall some balance as a storyteller, the book is stripped of all poetic elegance and ends up reading like a trashy celebrity biography.

Although Hall doesn’t seem to be able to give Jenny Cooper the interest-drawing power of a celebrity, he does succeed in creating a colorful cast of worldly side-

characters for her to interact with.

In fact, The Disappeared is filled to the brim with seedy and secretive British socialites that are, at first, quite engaging. Sadly, Hall’s inability to construct solid, believable dialog robs both him and his characters of their collective credibility.

The overall parting impression of The Disappeared is a flawed one, marred by poor stylistic decisions and a series of creative missteps that cannot be ignored.

However, after reading the novel, one also cannot ignore the fact that Hall’s chosen subject matter is discussed with a level of integrity that suggests an educated background while also boasting thorough research.

Ultimately, though, the author’s lack of storytelling turns a potentially enjoyable crime novel into nothing more than the hurried scribbles of an intellectual.

CAST to perform ‘The Music Man’ in spring

There may be trouble in River City, as the Broadway song goes, but there’s extra excitement coming from CAST this week as the community theater announced its spring musical will Hervey be The Music Folsom Man, with Artists in Action opening night scheduled for April 29.

The process of delivering the hit musical by Meredith Willson to CAST audiences begins with auditions at First Presbyterian Church in Anniston on Monday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.

Individuals of all ages, backgrounds and levels of experience are encouraged to try out.

The musical is a tribute to the late Sam Thompson, who directed this production at Anniston High School in March of 1973.

“Theater was a natural part of Sam’s life and he was able to transfer this enthusiasm to his students,” said K. Dozier, who taught at Anniston High during those years. “His creativity was infectious. And some of the students he taught are prominent now in Anniston’s community life.”

And people involved in Thompson’s show still share good memories of their experiences.

Chip Howell, general manager of the Anniston Country Club and former mayor of Anniston, cherishes his photo album because it reflects colorful moments from the musical.

“Sam was firm. He expected the best from us, but he also loved a good time,” said Howell, who in 1973 at Anniston High School played Professor Harold Hill, the lead in The Music Man. Hill is a con man who comes to River City, Iowa, and persuades the people there that they need a boys’ band. Hill’s associate, Marcellus Washburn, was played

by Cleo Thomas, who is now city attorney of Anniston.

The time is 1912. The people of River City buy into Hill’s plan, and the band instruments later arrive on the Wells Fargo wagon, to the joy of all.

“I think of my role quite often,” Howell said.

“It was so much fun, and I loved the camaraderie of it all. These people were the friends I had grown up with.”

Howell said the barbershop quartet scenes were the most memorable, and the strongest song was “Marian, the Librarian.”

(Marian was portrayed by Sheila Smith Herring, who now lives in Tennessee.)

At Anniston High, Thompson taught drama, choral music, Spanish and English. He was involved with the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Anniston Little Theatre, Anniston Community Theatre and Town and Gown Theatre in Birmingham. Later he taught in Mobile and sang with an

opera company there. He also performed as soloist at churches in Anniston, Birmingham and Mobile.

At times, Thompson relied on his older friends for advice. One such friend was Christa Fair, who shared his passion for singing.

When she, Olga Kennedy, and Thompson got together for lunch one day, the director asked for a recommendation for a musical.

“I had seen The Music Man in Chicago,” Fair said, “and I remembered it made use of lots of people of all ages. I suggested that to Sam, he later directed it, and it was a huge success. It was then that I realized Sam really had an artistic gift that was really special.”

Speaking of special, the AHS students looked forward to the school musicals then as big, special events. CAST shares this spirit as it plans to present one of Amer-

ica’s favorite musicals. A special feature will be an appearance by the Anniston High School Band.

Presenting The Music Man will be a huge order to fill, according to Artistic Director Kim Dobbs, when she considers the talent and scenic design required.

“It’s sure to be a challenge, but I’m up to the challenge,” she said.

“I’m looking for singers, actors, dancers and, in general, men and women and boys and girls.”

Singers are asked to prepare a short musical selection for the auditions. Everyone is asked to bring a photo or have one taken at auditions.

But be sure to be on your toes if singing “Ya Got Trouble in River City.” To Howell, that was the toughest number.

“But we learned it,” he said smiling. “Now I can sing it in my sleep.”

Stepsister hopes new Hendrix restores legacy

LOS ANGELES — The keepers of Jimi Hendrix’s flame are calling the new album of long-buried recordings by the proto-rock guitar hero Valleys of Neptune. The obvious explanation is that it’s the title of one of the cornerstone songs that emerged during a fertile, albeit transitional, period in Hendrix’s career.

But spend a little time talking with those keepers — Hendrix’s stepsister, Janie, who controls his estate, recording engineer Eddie Kramer, who was there in the studio much of the time when Hendrix was at work, and music historian and Hendrix devotee John McDermott — and you quickly sense that Valleys of Neptune also describes just how far they’ve been willing to go in recent years to put his recorded legacy and his memory in order.

“I keep saying that this is the most fun, archaeological dig you could possibly go on,” said Kramer, one of the handful of people still alive who spent significant time with Hendrix in a recording studio. “You unearth these little gems, and you go, ’Wow, I don’t

remember him doing that.’ But then all these little pieces start to fit together.”

Hendrix, Kramer and McDermott gathered recently at the North Hollywood recording studio where Kramer and associate Chandler Harrod have been putting finishing touches on master recordings they’re using for Valleys of Neptune. They’re working with 41-year-old 14-inch reels turning on vintage Ampex tape machines hooked up to banks of the latest digital equipment to ready them for release March 9 on CD and audiophile vinyl pressings.

The releases roughly coincide with the launch of the latest Experience Hendrix Tour, this one kicking off in the Southland with shows March 4 in Santa Barbara and March 5 at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. On the bill are Hendrix disciples, including Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Jonny Lang, along with bassist Billy Cox, Hendrix’s Army buddy who joined him when Noel Redding exited the Jimi Hendrix Experience. For a couple of decades after Hendrix’s drug-related death at age 27, fans were deluged with what seemed like every scrap of tape that

had ever captured some of his musical landscape-altering guitar work or his fierce, blues-fired vocals. He released just three official studio albums during his lifetime. A live set from Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys surfaced shortly before his death on Sept. 18, 1970.

In succeeding years, however, various labels have issued more than 30 albums of live performances and assorted studio recordings he left behind. Since Janie Hendrix emerged as the victor in the legal wrangling over who would control the estate after the 2002 death of her father, Al Hendrix, she, Kramer and McDermott have busied themselves trying to redress what McDermott terms “a short-sighted approach that was just to try to grind (his catalog) for what it was worth at the time.”

Their first step has been to prep the three original albums for deluxe reissues, also due March 9. Phase 2 begins with Valleys of Neptune and involves exploring her stepbrother’s archives and pulling out unreleased recordings — not simply for material that hasn’t surfaced before but with the aim of finding tracks that shed new light on what’s previously been issued.

CARLSBAD, Calif. — On a rainy Tuesday evening in Angels & Airwaves’ suburban Carlsbad recording studio, singer Tom DeLonge pondered ice cubes. Specifically, the ice cubes made famous by the Japanese writer-mystic Masaru Emoto, who claimed that projecting positive vibes into water could make it freeze into more beautiful crystals.

“This guy taped pieces of paper with words like ‘Love’ and ‘Hate’ to cups of water and froze them. When he looked at them under a microscope, the ones with ‘Hate’ looked chaotic, but words like ‘Love’ made them perfectly symmetrical,” DeLonge said. “So we thought, what if we could use our album to do that to people, who are made up of mostly water?”

Hence the epic, electronica-infused emo band’s new album, LOVE. Angels & Airwaves released it independently as a free download on Sunday, the latest in a string of multiplatinum rock bands to use new, free albums to build their brand and fans’ loyalty, instead of seeing them as profit-makers.

The album is just one facet of a larger business experiment for the band, which hopes to seamlessly incorporate pervasive social media and corporate sponsorships in ways that might make Naomi Klein shudder. But their approach could be a new avenue for self-sufficiency amid rock music’s commercial swan dive.

As the longtime singer and guitarist of Blink182, DeLonge probably won’t have to hock his plasma any time soon. But it’s clear that Angels & Airwaves holds his interest in different ways than his easygoing, frequently naked punk act.

A walk around the band’s vast recording complex suggests Angels’ earnest music is balanced by a cool-eyed capitalist instinct.

Once hooked, fans can invest in the band’s output at a variety of price points — from the free download of the album to pay-perview concert streams to copies of their forthcoming feature-length film, a kind of Event Horizon-meets-Avatar CGI epic also called LOVE. “I’m a businessman and I want this to be as big as it can be,” DeLonge said. “I felt we could do the business end of this better ourselves with new partnerships. We could strike a deal with Ford where they put a copy of the record in every new car and they use one of our songs in an ad. We can do anything we want, and I have no problem approaching this band as a venture capitalist.”

Preservation (Preservation Hall), which pairs Preservation Hall’s house band with some of music’s best voices, was organized to raise funds for the music landmark and its outreach program. However, it’s these musicians who are providing the gift.

There’s a certain charm that comes with the New Orleans twist on “I Ain’t Got Nobody,” the playful horn arrangements and Buddy Miller’s delightful delivery lightening the sad-sack lyrics.

There’s a sly defiance that comes with Steve Earle’s take on “’Taint Nobody’s Business.” And there’s a timeless quality to Tom Waits’ leering take on “Tootie Ma Is a Big Fine Thing,” a Mardi Gras number that’s kind of a forerunner to all

of hip-hop’s current bootyshaking concerns.

But Preservation is at its best when it captures the magic of national treasures getting together. “Blue Skies” recalls Pete Seeger’s unique phrasing, as well as his delightful telegraphing of lyrics, and unites it with an extended trumpet solo opening. On “Rockin’ Chair,” the band works with Louis Armstrong’s vocals to build something new. And few pairings are as natural as Dr. John and the band on “Winin’ Boy.” Preservation mirrors the priceless comfort that Preservation Hall provides, the knowledge that America’s cultural legacy will not be forgotten.

Tindersticks latest CD is moody, complex Tindersticks Falling Down a Mountain The Tindersticks’ aesthetic has remained consistent since their early ’90s beginnings: subtly orchestrated ballads rooted in lush countrypolitan, pulsing Northern Soul, and wide-screen spaghetti-Western soundtracks, all backing Stuart Staples’ sepulchral voice and lyrics.

Tindersticks songs can veer unpredictably from the sentimental to the lurid. What initially sounds like a sincere love song proves to be told from the perspective of a violent stalker, or to hide a twist that condemns the speaker. It’s delicious stuff, moody, complex, and sometimes funny.

All of that is true of Falling Down a Mountain, the band’s seventh stu-

Massive Attack show they still have ambient skills Massive Attack Heligoland Sade isn’t the only chilled-out Briton to make a long-awaited return this discontented winter. Massive Attack, the Bristol, England, collective that, for better or worse, is credited with inventing trip-hop with Blue Lines way back in 1991, is back in action for the first time in seven years with an album named after a German archipelago. This time consisting only of producer-MCs Robert “3D” Del Naja and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall, Massive Attack is augmented by all sorts of guest vocalists — Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio on the opening moodsetter, “Pray For Rain”; former Tricky consort Martin Topley-Bird on two shimmering tracks; and elsewhere, Hope Sandoval, Blur’s Damon Albarn, and others.

The result is neither as menacing nor as

powerful as career highlights such as 1994’s Protection, and after years of tinkering, Heligoland feels somewhat unevenly patched together.

At their best, however — as on the disconcerting “Flat of the Blade,” featuring Guy Harvey of Elbow — Del Naja and Marshall prove they’re still sonic manipulators and songwriters highly skilled at creating a sense of ambient unease.

‘Hard Luck Stories’ resonates with emotion Ike Reilly Hard Luck Stories Funny: Ike Reilly has always come up with intriguingly colorful titles for his albums — Salesmen and Racists, Junkie Faithful, Poison the Hit Parade, etc. Now, for the best album of a brilliant lot, the title is the rather generic Hard Luck Stories.

That title is the Chicago-area rocker’s only misstep. Reilly is still mixing the motor-mouth wiseguy dazzle and bent blues of “Highway 61 Revisited”-era Dylan with blasts of the Clash’s punkish intensity. But amid all the street-poet swagger, audacious humor, and industrial-strength hooks, he has sharpened his storytelling skills and revealed a lot more heart: “Lights Out,” “The Ballad of Jack and Haley,” and “The Golden Corner” help make this the most emotionally resonant of his albums.

“The War on the Terror and the

Drugs” starts out sounding like a lark, a buddy singalong with Shooter Jennings.

Then Reilly sledgehammers you with this: “Well I dreamed my children / Couldn’t catch their breaths / And they were falling off windowsills / Straight to their deaths ... And out of their heads leaked laughter not lies / Mixed in the flowerbeds with sweet lullabies. ...” Here’s hoping a broad audience finds all the riches brimming in his hard-luck stories.

LOS ANGELES — It’s hardly a secret that Tom Cruise is no longer Hollywood’s top-gun star.

The 47-year-old boyish-looking actor has had a rough stretch, from an embarrassing jumping episode on Oprah Winfrey’s couch to the clunker Lions for Lambs. Many believe that his controversial career has peaked.

Now, in order to revive his big-screen role as dashing secret agent Ethan Hunt in Paramount’s Mission: Impossible IV, Cruise consented to a deal that would have once been unthinkable: He’s forgoing a preferential slice of the movie’s ticket sales, the sine qua non of clout in Hollywood.

Cruise will still earn a handsome payday. He will be paid $20 million of his $25-million fee upfront to star in and produce the fourth Mission film, which is scheduled to hit theaters Memorial Day weekend 2011.

But he won’t collect a hefty “first dollar” cut of box-office receipts that entitles stars to skim a movie’s revenues before the studio earns back its huge investment and gets a fee for distributing the film, according to people familiar with the deal. If that seems sensible, it wasn’t always the case.

Cruise’s pay structure illustrates the “new normal” for Hollywood’s A-list actors and filmmakers, who no longer can command the super-rich deals that awarded them swollen payouts on movies even when the studios lost money.

With once-reliable DVD sales that propped up movie profits in a swoon and other pressures bearing down, the studios are no longer willing to accept second financial billing to talent.

“Over the last 25 years, agents were getting better and better deals for their clients because the studios were star-dependent,” said Jeremy Zimmer, a partner at United Talent Agency.

“Now, there’s a complete retrenchment where the studios are less star-dependent and making fewer movies, so they’re more willing to walk away unless a deal makes sense for them.”

A Paramount spokesman declined to comment about financial aspects of the “Mission” sequel.

To be sure, stars like Cruise can still make a killing if their film turns into a blockbuster. In exchange for forgoing a cut of ticket sales, the studios grant a bigger share of the potential profits

Roger Ebert cannot speak, but still communicates Associated Press NEW YORK — Film critic Roger Ebert lost his ability to speak nearly four years ago, when he underwent a tracheostomy, a procedure that opens an airway through an incision in the windpipe, after surgery for cancer in his jaw.

In an interview in the new issue of Esquire magazine, the 67-year-old film critic for the Chicago SunTimes uses pen and paper and text-to-speech computer software to communicate. He’s developed a kind of rudimentary sign language, and he some-

times draws letters with his finger on the palm of his hand.

Ebert had surgery to remove his cancerous thyroid in 2002. He had surgery on his salivary glands in 2003 and on his jaw in 2006. Complications in 2006 led to more surgery and months of recuperation. He lost his ability to speak.

When asked about another operation to restore his voice, Ebert shakes his head.

Ebert has been a film critic for the Sun-Times since 1967. In 1975, he became the first journalist to win a Pulitzer Prize for

movie criticism.

His thumb, pointing up or down, was the main logo of the televised movie review shows he co-hosted, first with Gene Siskel of the rival Chicago Tribune and with his SunTimes colleague Richard Roeper.

MTV dropping ‘Music Television’ from its logo

LOS ANGELES — Twenty-five years ago, MTV was best known for music videos starring Michael Jackson and Madonna.

These days, its reigning queen is not a recording star at all but rather Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, the rowdy party girl from the reality series “Jersey Shore.”

So maybe it’s not surprising that last week the 29-year-old network bowed to the inevitable and finally scraped the legend “Music Television” off its corporate logo.

The change was a belated acknowledgment of what has been obvious for years: MTV has evolved into a reality channel that occasionally runs programs that have to do with music.

But the shift is significant because, in an era of rapid technological change and microscopic attention spans, how networks identify themselves matters more than ever, experts say.

MTV “realized being ’music television’ was too limiting,” said Dave Howe, president of Syfy, home of such series as Stargate Universe and the now-defunct Battlestar Galactica. Howe says the right brand is essential “to cut through the noise and clutter of the media explosion” bedeviling the TV industry.

And he should know.

Last summer, his network underwent a controversial name change, from the Sci-Fi Channel to Syfy, a made-up word that Twitter users said looked more like the name of a mop or a gossip magazine than that of a cable network. One newspaper called it the “dumbest rebranding ever.”

But Howe says the name change has reenergized the network and sharpened its identity. Because it referred to a well-established genre, “sci-fi” could not be trademark-protected, an important consideration for a network looking to establish a distinctive identity. Also, he said,

“We totally expected there to be a backlash from core sci-fi fans,” Howe said. But the shift has “far exceeded our expectations . ... It’s opened up the network to a broader range of viewers” and helped boost ratings.

For its part, MTV says viewers had moved beyond what the old logo said.

“The people who watch it today, they don’t refer to MTV as music television,” MTV’s head of marketing, Tina Exarhos, said last week.

Other networks have gone much further. In 2003, Viacom

rebranded the New TNN, which itself rose from the ashes of the Nashville Network, as Spike TV, a network targeted aggressively at males. (It’s now simply called Spike.)

The Learning Channel was originally an outpost for little-watched educational fare; as TLC, it booted the explicit reference to self-improvement and achieved household recognition as the purveyor of the pop-culture smash Jon & Kate Plus 8.

Often, outlets extensively overhaul programming — and chase higher ratings — without changing their names at all.

Over the years, Bravo has moved away from foreign and art movies and reinvented itself as an outpost of such hip reality shows as

Queer Eye and Top Chef. A&E’s nowdefunct fine-arts shows, such as Breakfast With the Arts, are a far cry from Gene Simmons Family Jewels and the other decidedly un-artsy reality shows that now rule the channel.

Howe says the generic names — Music Television, Sci-Fi, Arts & Entertainment — date from the dawn of multi-channel television, when it was enough to tell viewers you were offering a certain type of programming. That approach poses problems in today’s teeming media market.

“It’s too old-fashioned,” he said. “You might as well be called Milk or Gas.” Ira Kalb, a veteran marketing expert who teaches at USC, compared MTV’s logo change to Apple Computer’s decision in 2007 to call itself Apple Inc. That shift signified that the company’s focus now encompassed a broad range of tech products, such as the iPhone and the iPod. While the name change might seem minor, consumers do absorb such branding shifts over time.

Kalb said he often tests students to see whether they recognize the NBC chimes; most still do. “And they also know the five notes for Intel,” he added.

But other analysts, while conceding the importance of brands, wonder whether such marketing concepts will matter in what might be shaping up as a post-network age.

Kathy Sharpe, chief executive of New York-based marketing firm Sharpe Partners, noted that whatever its name or logo, MTV might not have the centrality in young people’s lives that it once did. “MTV isn’t really competing with VH1 or Fuse.

“It’s competing with Facebook and YouTube.”

Certainly Pauly, Vinny, Mike and the rest never put on airs.

They were just a bunch of young people trying to take advantage of a carefree summer, to party and hook up as much as possible before jobs, kids and mortgages land on their heads.

And if they made fools of themselves in the process ... well, that’s why they call it “reality TV.” Jersey Shore has floated the boat of everyone involved. MTV saw its ratings more than triple over the course of nine episodes.

The cast members have been exploiting their summer fling avariciously, retaining publicists and managers and making more personal appearances than a Super Bowl winning quarterback. You can get Vinny, Sammi, the Situation and the rest to show up for a water main break repair if the price is right.

Their overnight notoriety is going to make a second season very tricky to pull off. MTV plans to begin taping as soon as next month, presumably in a warmer climate. But that kid-next-door aura can never be recaptured.

Lust’s final gatekeeper, the level’s “boss” in video-game parlance, is a building-sized, topless Cleopatra, whose obscene attacks end only after she calls upon her fallen lover Mark Antony to take out Alighieri.

Antony is depicted as an absurdly broad-shouldered warrior, whose armor includes golden hands that tear the flesh away from the Roman warrior’s eyes, blinding him.

While not subtle, these manifestations of the worst bits of love do a good job of underscoring the subtleties of the game’s secondary Beatrice plot, which deals with many of the same problems of love.

“We tried to tell a personal story of love, rescue, betrayal, and redemption,” Knight said. “And in doing so, I suppose we naturally hit on the ups and downs of Dante’s relationship to Beatrice and his family.”

DiCaprio, Scorsese partners again

So, we meet again For ‘Shutter Island,’ the wait might be worthwhile

Movies can be like wine: Once uncorked, they don’t often last long on the shelf. But Hollywood history could be a lot kinder to the postponed Shutter Island, and the movie’s last-minute date change might actually work to the thriller’s advantage.

Just six weeks before director Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel about the criminally insane was scheduled to hit theaters last October, Paramount Pictures pulled the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring movie from its year-end lineup.

Although Shutter Island’s television spots hadn’t yet started running, the film’s trailer and movie theater cardboard standees had been shipped, only to be quickly altered with the new release date. The publicity campaign was well underway too: The Cold Warera movie had been featured in numerous fall preview pieces, and was turning up in early Oscar prediction stories.

The nearly five-month stay was prompted by a number of financial reasons and knocked Shutter Island out of the current Academy Awards race.

Though such postponements can be calamitous — Universal changed the release date for The Wolfman three times, and the troubled remake opened to middling reviews and ticket sales last weekend — the delay for the far more critically acclaimed Shutter Island now looks propitious, and could deliver the biggest opening weekend in Scorsese and DiCaprio’s careers: likely in the mid-$30 million range, and possibly as much as $40 million.

“If you have a bad movie, and you delay it, they pounce on you,” says one of the film’s producers, Mike Medavoy. “But if you have a good movie, and you delay it, you can get over it.”

Some incredibly successful films — Titanic, Star Trek and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince being a few good examples — were postponed from their initial premiere dates for various reasons and scarcely suffered.

Paramount is hoping that in moving Shutter Island to a release date close to 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs premiere (which hit theaters Feb. 14, because Valentine’s Day and cannibalism are such perfect partners), it can duplicate that film’s commercial and critical appeal. (It’s not the only tie to Anthony Hopkins’ Oscar winner: Ted Levine, who played the serial killer Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs, has a memorable small role in Shutter Island.)

Audience tracking surveys show that the $75 million Shutter Island is generating strong “definite interest” — 40 percent and higher — from all four slices of the moviegoing population: men and women young and old alike.

“It’s very rare that you get a movie with all four quadrants that high, especially for an R-rated movie,” says Rob Moore, Paramount’s vice chairman. “This could end up being the perfect scenario for us.”

The story follows U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels’ (DiCaprio) search for an escaped inmate — and answers to more complicated puzzles — on a remote island housing the criminally insane.

The movie was not particularly easy to get made, and passed through several incarnations, with Wolfgang Petersen (The Perfect Storm) once set to direct.

“The book is a descent into a state of mind,” screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis says. She says she wanted to craft a screenplay that “makes you as an audience member experience the pressure of what it feels like to descend into insanity.”

Given how strong Shutter Island’s early reviews have been, the movie is likely to establish new opening records for both Scorsese and DiCaprio.

The trickier question is whether awards voters will remember Shutter Island nine months from now, when studios and independent distributors typically start releasing their more cultured productions.

Scorsese says “I really don’t know” if the film’s delay will have any impact. “I go by what they really feel is important,” he says of Paramount. “And they’re behind the picture.”

NEW YORK — Will Ferrell and Adam McKay forged their partnership years ago on Saturday Night Live. Now, in a much different way, the two are back on TV with a sketch comedy show.

On Friday at midnight, HBO will premiere Funny or Die Presents, a new half hour series that compiles clips from the comedy video Web site that McKay and Ferrell co-created in 2007.

The show arrives as part of a new batch of HBO comedy.

The Friday slate also includes the premiere of The Ricky Gervais Show, the start of season eight of Real Time With Bill Maher and the second season of The Life and Times of Tim. Funny or Die Presents is the fruition of a deal hatched in 2008 between the site and HBO, which purchased a piece of FunnyOrDie.com reportedly in the neighborhood of about $10 million. There’s further overlap in that HBO airs the McKay and Ferrell-produced hit Eastbound & Down, which is prepping a second season.

Funny or Die Presents represents an increasingly common fusion between Web-created content and television.

When the series was announced, Ferrell sarcastically asserted the deal was “the missing link moment where TV and Internet finally merge.”

The show is introduced by a 1950s-style TV host who intones: “Funny or Die is at the forefront of computer technology, leading the way in computer comedy programming.

Tonight marks a departure from our usual business model as we join the ever-declining world of broadcast television.”

McKay, best known as the director of comedies such as Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Step Brothers, says that joke is “70 percent true and 30 percent joking.”

When FunnyOrDie.com launched, it was rare in its combination of professionally created content (from Ferrell, McKay and their Hollywood friends) and user-generated

videos that, if deemed funny enough by viewers, could compete with the pros.

It has had some mammoth hits, such as The Landlord (nearly 70 million views) and the beloved series Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis. It has often capitalized on the news cycle by rapidly creating timely videos. Videos submitted by users have been far less likely to find viral success, but McKay believes the contributions have gotten “way better.”

Funny or Die Presents isn’t the next Saturday Night Live — it’s somewhat slight, unabashedly cheap programming.

McKay describes it as “the least noted or developed TV show that’s maybe ever been put on.”

“The whole concept of Funny or Die ... was the idea that people could have a place to put up whatever they wanted to put up with no notes and no filter,” McKay says. “The TV show came out of that same spirit.”

McKay was a writer at Saturday Night Live in the late 1990s. He has occasionally written sketches, including one performed by Tina Fey as Sarah Palin. In Funny or Die Presents, he sees an unfiltered sketch show not beholden to network demands or audience expectations.

For frequent visitors to FunnyOrDie.com, the material on the HBO show will look familiar: Will Ferrell as Abraham Lincoln with Don Cheadle as Frederick Douglas in “Drunk History”; Rob Riggle and Paul Scheer in “Designated Driver”; Fred Willard in “Space Cats.”

“It has an energy to it,” says McKay. “There are some pieces that are brilliant and some that are kind of a mess. It feels really kind of free.”

The show, produced by FunnyOrDie.com creative head Andrew Steele, is essentially a step in a direction toward longer-form material. McKay’s goal is to transition the site further into TV and low-budget movies.

“That’s probably the next big step for Funny or Die — to continue to sort of blend the two,” says McKay.

LOS ANGELES — Trouble and Charlie Sheen have never been strangers, but now the star’s felony rap could cause major headaches for his TV bosses.

Sheen was charged last week with felony menacing and two lesser counts in connection with a Christmas incident in which Aspen, Colo., police said he assaulted and threatened his wife, Brooke Mueller. Sheen, out on bail, didn’t enter a plea and is due back for a court hearing March 15. If convicted, he could face three years behind bars.

What does that mean for CBS’ Two and a Half Men, the No. 1-rated sitcom that stars Sheen as a caddish lout? Well, probably nothing good.

Insiders say that the producers can likely rejigger the remainder of this season’s production schedule while Sheen prepares his defense. But the long-term situation is much more uncertain. And uncertainty drives TV executives nuts when it comes to a cash cow like Men. The sitcom is TV’s most-watched, with an average of nearly 15 million viewers this season, according to the Nielsen Co. CBS will likely find itself in the unenviable position this May of having to announce a fall schedule that relies heavily on Men without even knowing whether the star will be available to shoot new episodes starting in late summer. That could impact the network financially because the “upfront” market is where the bulk of commercial time is sold during late spring and early summer.

Men has been the anchor of CBS’ top-rated Monday comedy block since 2005, when Everybody Loves Raymond went off the air. But advertisers may stay away from Sheen’s sitcom, or at least bid down the price of commercial time, if the star still faces serious legal problems.

Through spokespersons, CBS and Warner Bros., which makes the show, declined to comment, as did executive producer Chuck Lorre via e-mail.

Sheen’s spokesman, Stan Rosenfield, said the actor had missed a table read for Men the day he was charged last week. He referred other questions about the upcoming work schedule to Lorre.

The situation is especially complex because the network and Warner Bros. have banked so heavily on the series, in its seventh year, lasting at least through the 2011-12 TV season.

I could be another John Cleese, but I was inspired more than thinking I could be anything like him.”

But he was like him. The first time Merchant tried standup at 22 (his parents had to drop him off as he didn’t have a car), he triumphed. The second time, he bombed.

“My experience of comedy since then has been that same roller-coaster.

Sometimes it kills, sometimes it doesn’t. But it was very formative in that regard because it gave me confidence that I could do it, that I wasn’t wasting my time. But at the same time it rattled me because it wasn’t as easy as I thought it was. I couldn’t do it every time. I had to work at it.”

He and Gervais met at a radio station. “We had a radio show and would also do other stuff at the radio station, and I left and joined the BBC,” says Merchant, who’s sporting a reddish beard and hornrimmed glasses.

“And while I was at the BBC I was able to film this kind of character that Ricky had created who, in essence, became David Brent, the character in The Office that he did. It was through that good fortune that that whole thing got rolling.”

When they edited the film, “We just realized we had something special.

Even at the time I remember thinking there’s like an alchemy, there’s something happened here, being really excited. It was like panning for gold and you see a little glisten and you thought

maybe there’s more gold in these hills. And that was a big moment, just seeing the quality of his performance and realizing that if we managed it right, we were on to something.”

They were on to something all right. NBC adopted the show for the American audience and The Office has proved one of its most successful comedies.

The pair is still at it. On Friday, The Ricky Gervais Show premieres on HBO. Spawned from their podcast, the show features an animated trio where Gervais and Merchant simply wing it with another station employee, Karl Pilkington.

“We met this guy who was just a goldmine of oddball, eccentric, weird anecdotes and strange views about the universe — just a real eccentric that we started chatting with,” says Merchant.

“Then we started doing podcasts off the radio show and they became this cult thing all over the world, and we continued to do them with Karl and now they’ve animated them for HBO, hopefully for a whole new audience.”

As a bizarre counterpoint to Gervais and Merchant, Pilkington is not a performer. “He’s just a guy that we met, but he comes out with things that are often funnier than we could ever write because he sees the world differently, through different eyes.”

At 35, Merchant admits that he’s much more at ease with himself than he used to be. But he doesn’t tell anyone. “Because it undermines my comic persona.

The truth is it’s funnier to be hopeless.

“It’s funnier to be neurotic and unsuccessful, is the truth of it.”
