The art is in a typical Clowes style, minimalistic and very humanizing, and it functions as a beautiful conduit of advancing the story and illustrating the way Marshall perceives and feels about the world around him. There are a couple of series of panels where Marshall is picturing the potential outcomes of a situation and the representations of him and Natalie are overly simplified to the point of nearly being stick figures. It’s just a great way of depicting the way Marshall — and the reader — views the world. Mister Wonderful: A Love Story is a great romantic tale that has as much to do with self-respect and self-esteem as it does romantic love, and the two ideas marry in a simply wonderful way.

These characters are prostitutes with hearts of gold, a few cops and a couple of bad guys — a combination of the good-hearted, great honor, and the bad. Percy Sledge doesn’t sing in the shower. The soulful legend and 2005 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, who gave the world such tender ballads of love, loss and longing as “When a Man Loves a Woman,” “It Tears Me Up,” “Take Time to Know Her” and “Dark End of the Street” has a secret when it comes to preserving his voice after 40-plus years of performing around the world. “I only sing when I’m on stage,” Sledge says from his home in Baton Rouge, La. “If I’m not on tour, I might go two, three months without singing a word. I sing in my mind ’cause I’m always humming, always thinking about music.” And that means no singing — not

At first, it wasn’t so much about saving his voice, Sledge says, it just became a habit. But now, that habit helps preserve a voice that resonates as powerfully today as it did in 1966 when he recorded his first single, “When a Man Loves a Woman” — a romantic classic Rolling Stone Magazine ranked #54 of the Greatest Songs

of All Time. The song remains a radio staple and is always Sledge’s show-stopping final number. It’s been a remarkable run for a song originally written out of the pain of a high school crush. NEW YORK — Last year at the BET Awards, Chris Brown performed an emotional tribute to Michael Jackson. It marked the beginning of a comeback for the embattled pop star. This year, Brown is the top contender at the award show with six nominations. Brown is up for best male R&B artist, viewer’s choice and video of the year for “Look at Me Now.” He’s nominated twice in the best collaboration category for brown his No. 1 R&B hits “Deuces,” featuring Tyga and Kevin McCall, and “Look at Me Now,” with Busta Rhymes and Lil Wayne. Brown is also nominated for best actor for his role in the heist thriller Takers. Lil Wayne follows Brown with five nominations. Three of Lil Wayne’s nominations come from his guest appearance on Brown’s “Look at me Now”; Lil Wayne is also up for best male hip-hop artist and viewer’s choice for “6 Foot 7 Foot.” Kanye West, Drake and Rihanna are up for four awards each. Other nominees for video of the year include Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair,” West’s “Runaway,” B.o.B’s “Airplanes,” Keri Hilson’s “Pretty Girl Rock” and Marsha Ambrosius’ “Far Away.” Willow is also up for best new artist and the YoungStars award. LEXINGTON, Ky. — The year was 2004. That was when one of the true odd couples of contemporary music took over the charts. Leading the way was a suitably summery hit by champion country music beachcomber Kenny Chesney called “When the Sun Goes Down.” Of the many tropically themed Nashville hits he has scored during the past decade, this was the one that played directly to the Jimmy Buffett contingency Chesney was so obviously eager to add to his mounting fan base. But his duet partner for the single wasn’t some video-friendly Nashville pop bombshell or an established celebrity artist who would provide Chesney with even greater star power than he already had. No, it was a street-savvy, rock- and rapbred artist out of the little-known country metropolis of Detroit. His name was Matthew Shafer. But audiences already knew him as Uncle Kracker. Thus began one of country’s most unlikely alliances, one that continues with

Uncle Kracker serving as one of the opening acts for Chesney’s Goin’ Coastal Tour. “It’s a fun tour,” Kracker said. “But it’s really weird, too. Starting seven years ago, I did a guest appearance on a song with Kenny. And, thank God, the thing did really good. So we did probably two or three tours after that with me along as a kind of special guest. But it feels weird because that was all several years ago. “Now I’ve got a record of my own out on country radio,” he said of the crossover single “Smile,” which became Kracker’s first solo country hit last fall. “So I don’t feel so much like a charity case anymore. Now, it’s like I’m an opening act with a purpose.” To underscore exactly how unexpected the collaboration with Chesney was in 2004 and Kracker’s own acceptance within Nashville circles, consider who was one of his earliest musical allies: Kid Rock. The two, in essence, grew up together with Kracker, 36, serving as DJ in Rock’s Twisted Brown Trucker touring band for many years. That, in turn, led to Kracker’s Rock-produced debut album, Double Wide, a Top 5, multiplatinum-selling work that spawned the massive radio hit “Fol-

low Me.” A second album, No Stranger to Shame, followed in 2002 with a hit cover of the 1973 Dobie Gray pop-soul staple “Drift Away.” But it was Kracker’s third album, 72 and Sunny, that set its sights on Nashville. The record didn’t initially click with pop or country crowds. But it didn’t need to. “When the Sun Goes Down” did the trick later that year. Kracker’s fourth album, 2009’s Happy Hour — or more precisely, a 2010 EP boasting “country remixes” of tunes titled Happy Hour: The South River Road Sessions — cemented a country audience. The jubilant “Smile” became a hit on pop and country charts, while a second single aimed at country radio, “Good to Be Me,” teamed him again with Kid Rock, who also has forged a devout Nashville following. “We’re best friends,” Kracker said of Rock. “We have been for a long time. He helps keep me inspired, to tell you the truth. I’m lucky to be surrounded by people like him and Kenny. I’ve always been of the opinion that if you’re the biggest guy in the room, it’s time to get out of the room. So it’s good to be around people like Chesney. You will always know which way is up.”

New music from Tinie Tempah and Moby Newsday Tinie Tempah, Disc-Overy (Capitol) Tinie Tempah has already conquered his homeland with a smash album and four No. 1 U.K. singles and is ready to take on America with a new version of his Disc-Overy debut. The 22-year-old from London, born Patrick Chukwuemeka Okogwu Jr., is set to be the first rapper from the British “grime” scene, which has included the formidable Dizzee Rascal and The Streets, to break into the American mainstream. The mix of hip-hop, dancehall reggae, and drum ‘n’ bass electronica is a potent one, and Tinie rides it well with clever rhymes and a slick, charismatic delivery throughout Disc-Overy. His American breakthrough single, “Written in the Stars,” already set to crash the Top 10, is one of the album’s more conventional tracks, with Eric Turner’s

oriented tracks. “Pass Out” is brash and fresh, especially once the dancehall and the breakbeat bits kick in. JSU Symphony to perform string concert When you arrive at the Jacksonville State Symphony Concert Sunday, sit back, relax and expect to be spoken to — but not only by the person beside you. The European composers have something tell you, too, depending on your mood. Your mind will create words from the music if you allow it. In fact, some listeners interpret even sentences in some of Hervey Mozart’s Folsom witty pasArtists in Action sages. Composers are sensitive to the human spirit, and the violins you hear have their own way of communicating: They are the instruments that most closely approach the inflection in the human voice. The concert, featuring works by composers Mozart, Corelli and Holst, will be at 3 p.m Sunday, May 29, at the First United Methodist Church in Anniston. It will be performed by strings only. (A Little Night Music), a serenade written for entertainment; Italian composer Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerto Grosso No. 2 in F Major, a Baroque work with grandeur; and Gustav Holst’s playful Brook Green Suite. Using techniques from the Romantic period, Holst, a British composer who wrote choral hymns, was also influenced by folk songs and the madrigal.

Mozart and Corelli wrote their works in the 1700s. Holst’s work was written in 1933. Though old, the three works are still musical treasures. They are played in commercials, film soundtracks and in the form of updated versions. “They’re still popular. They’re everywhere,” said music director Chris Hosmer. “Night Music,” known for its

formal charm, is said by some musicians to be Mozart’s most popular work, probably because it’s easy listening and it opens the door to a kind of paradise. It was written in June 1787 for a string quintet to perform at an elegant outdoor occasion in Vienna. The four movements were written in the same key, for the most part, but each takes an entirely different direction. The first movement, the most familiar, is brisk and a musical conversation in itself. The second movement is sentimental, the third suggests a promenade, and the final movement creates a happy conclusion. “This was one of Mozart’s later works, and it’s an absolute masterpiece,” said Roland Lister, associate director of the Etowah Youth Symphony. “Every note has a purpose, and the whole piece is perfectly crafted.” Defined in Discovering Music by Howard D. McKinney as “somewhere between a symphony and a dance,” it celebrates the arrival of summer. Corelli was the most prominent composer in Italy around 1700, according to Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of Music. The contrasts in tempo and volume and the ringing tones characterize his Concerto Grosso (large orchestra).

Portions of the music evolve into duets between three soloists and the rest of the string choir for special ornamentation. Composers back then wrote music on commission, but Holst and Mozart wrote these particular works under very different circumstances. Holst was hospitalized with a terminal illness when he composed Brook Green Suite, according to Internet sources. It was written for the orchestra at St. Paul’s Girls’ School in London, where he taught. Mozart, too, was ill (with a fever) when he wrote the entire “Night Music” in his mind, according to Mozart, a text by Marcia Davenport. When the artist recovered, he put it into writing. The serenade’s appeal has lasted; it’s seemingly simple and a tune that stays on your mind. While things have worked out for this concert, the orchestra needs more violinists, Hosmer said. For those interested, he promises fun — and challenges. “We always enjoy coming together each week to make music,” he said. “I prefer that we play the original composition, not the simplified version,” he said. Social media proves worthiness during severe weather The storms that ravaged Alabama will not soon be forgotten. Neither will the amount of support and aid garnered by the social media phenomenon, Twitter. I was quite disappointed while watching the destruction on television in the newsroom — because of the damage Chris and injuries that were Pittman taking place, of course. iSpy But also from the lack of detailed reports and locations on where exactly these storms were hitting. James Spann is amazing, after all. Just not THAT amazing. I typed the names of the already-report-

ed troubled towns into a Twitter search. I quickly found out more than I expected. The amount of detail reported by people was unreal. In some cases, you could pretty much pinpoint the path of the storm. All of this from 140 character messages. I pulled up Google Maps and followed some of the reported coordinates. A few people had posted latitude and longitude numbers in areas of high damage. This could be critical in saving the lives of people during devastation. The result has made me want to try a little experiment the next time severe weather breaks out. I want to set up a Google Map that pulls coordinates from Twitter. Basically, the script would put a dot on the location of the Tweeter, and you could read their mes-

sage by hovering over it. I feel it could be an incredible way of immediately knowing the spots that need aid. It would be instant. No waiting around for someone to gather information and plot the data. I’m sure emergency management personnel would be hesitant to use such information for their services. It is the Internet, after all. Still, this could be the future of immediate storm recovery. Another amazing use of social media. Twitter quickly became the biggest relief effort in the state following the April 27 devastation. Thousands of users expressed their desire to help those impacted by the damage. Item lists and location drop-offs filled

tweets for days. This helped to save a ton of phone calls from people wondering where they needed to take supplies. The time that would have been spent answering those calls instead went toward more important efforts. It’s amazing how much power a 140character message can bring to the table. Especially when multiple short messages can bring the past, present and future together so well. I’m sure Twitter picked up some new fans in the state of Alabama on April 27. It could be one of them who provides the important updates during the next big storm.

This week’s DVD releases include a wide variety of viewing options. The Mechanic, Grade B: Remake of the 1972 film starring minimalist actor Charles Bronson. This version features the jawclenching Jason Statham playing Arthur Bishop, one of the best mechanics (aka hitmen) in the business. If you didn’t see the original, no problem. Fans of the Bronson version will notice one major change. But overall, Richard Wenk’s script for the update is so similar to the original by Lewis John Carlino that both men get film credit. Broken Hill, Grade Aminus: An Australian sheep herder dreams of a career as a music composer. The film reaches a final act that is part Rocky and part Mr. Holland’s Opus, where the struggle to defeat impossible odds is driven by an uncontrollable passion for music. Like a well-written piece of music, it builds to an amazing crescendo. Covert Affairs: Season One, Grade B-plus: The cable action series works because of the strong performances by Piper Perabo and Christopher Gorham. Gorham plays a blind CIA agent who uses his computer skills to mentor a CIA trainee (Perabo). The Rite, Grade B: Hollywood’s latest look at exorcism is creepy and at times a little kooky, but it never gets mysterious or scary enough to qualify as a standard horror movie. Its examination of religion makes the film more like a

‘The Sorcerer’ a musical comedy f it for all Suddenly, everyone in the village has a romance going on. After Alexis’ and Aline’s wedding, nobody is without a true love. The problem is, it’s the wrong true love. And the solution to breaking up the mismatched couples seems evasive. At this point, maybe it’s time again to call in the supernatural powers. To discover what troubles and triumphs are brewing in Hervey this plot about Folsom mistaken relaArtists in Action tionships, see The Sorcerer, a Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera performed by the Jacksonville Opera Theatre. It will be presented May 23-28 at Stone Performing Arts Center at Jacksonville State University. The opera, which is actually described as a musical comedy by Dr. Nathan Wight, artistic director of JOT, features a variety of young and old characters, some lovely arias, strong voices and dancing — which includes touches of the minuet and chorus line steps. And, true to Wight’s creativity, there will be plenty of surprise elements. “There will be twists that you can’t possibly see coming,” said Kaylon Gilley, who plays Alexis, the lead male role. “I have a very, very strong feeling that this will be a popular show. It has something to interest everyone.” Gilley adds that the subject of magicians and their spells intrigues all ages. And, if this isn’t enough to generate interest, Wight takes “magic” to a new level on stage with special effects, costumes and dialogue. When the opera was written in 1877, the setting was Plovenleigh, England. In this production, it is any time, any place. The characters’ conversations here are relevant to today’s local audience, Wight said. A description of Gilley’s role explains the conflict in the opera’s

Alexis, “a hopeless romantic” as the actor sees his character, is about to marry Aline, played by Christina Booker. He is so happy in finding a life mate that he wants everyone to fall in love, and he insists that social rank should not be a barrier. To make this happen, he calls in a wizard, John Wellington Wells (played by Kevin Ward), from the town’s family sorcerer company. Wells creates a love potion for all the villagers, without their knowledge. The mixture is added to the tea and, as a result, the people fall asleep. When they awake, they fall in love with the first person they encounter of the opposite sex. As can be expected, this is disastrous for both the men and women. For example, Constance, a blind young maiden (portrayed by Amber Conaway), is paired with The Notary, a 97-year-old gentleman who is deaf. And this male role offers one

more interesting twist: It is played by Ellen Abney in a pants role, a traditional practice in opera, past and present. The villagers are in a bind. The sorcerer must again work his art to undo the dilemma. Only the viewers of the musical will know the outcome. JOT again offers a “Dinner at the Opera” event at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 27, at Classic on Noble. The $38 ticket buys the meal, a lecture on the opera and center seating at that night’s performance. Tickets alone are $15 for adult side seating and $25 for center seating. For students, the side seating price is $10. At two hours and 16 minutes, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides — the fourth film in the ridiculously successful Disney franchise — is the shortest in the series. But it still feels overlong and overstuffed: needlessly convoluted yet, at the same time, phoned-in. And the fact that this one’s in 3-D — because everything’s in 3-D, silly thing — does nothing to liven up the action. Those three-dimensional digital effects mainly consist of various swords and snakes and such being flung at our faces. Boo! Did you jump? That’s not to say this summer behemoth doesn’t have its thrilling moments. Rob Marshall (Chicago, Nine) takes over for Gore Verbinski, who directed the first three Pirates movies, and his knack for choreography comes shining through in individual set pieces. An early chase sequence, in which Johnny Depp as the randy Capt. Jack Sparrow escapes the clutches of the puffy, bloviating King George II (Richard Griffiths), is expertly staged. Jack swings from chandeliers and hangs from ropes, straddles moving carriages and steers a cart full of flaming coal, and we’re right there alongside him every breathless step of the way. Similarly, a nighttime attack by mermaids — beautiful, seductive, deadly mermaids with razorsharp teeth — provides a jolt. Because what’s hotter than mermaids, except maybe naughty vampire mermaids? And the first time Jack crosses paths (and swords) with his old flame Angelica, played by a spirited Penelope Cruz, it’s in a lengthy, fluid battle across beams and atop barrels. (Oddly, Cruz and Depp, who co-starred together in 2001’s Blow, don’t have a whole lot of chemistry once they have to actually stop and talk to each other.)

It’s everything that happens in between, all the chatter and the exposition, that make the latest Pirates such a repetitive bore. Depp’s performance, which seemed like such a free, goofy, inspired bit of work when the first film came out back in 2003, now feels so dialed-down and obvious, it’s as if he could do it in his sleep. With the (unexplained) absence of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley this time around, Depp’s Sparrow is now front and center — he’s almost the voice of reason — rather than the bejeweled and eyelinered clown riffing in the corner, commenting in the action. As for the plot — not that it matters, really — this time the script from Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio centers on a search for the fabled Fountain of Youth. Jack has no ship anymore, so when Angelica kidnaps him and drags him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship belonging to the fearsome Blackbeard (a constrained Ian McShane), he’s stuck going along for the ride. Blackbeard seeks the fountain after receiving a prophecy that he’s going to die in two weeks. But the Spanish are after it, too. And so are the English, led by Jack’s deceitful old nemesis Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). Did we mention that there are zombie pirates aboard Blackbeard’s ship? The fact that they’re zombies makes no sense at all — I mean, come on, wouldn’t they be trying to eat the brains of the living pirates at every opportunity? — and feels like yet another attempt to inject arbitrary weirdness in the place of genuine inspiration. Also on board is a hunky man of faith with just the right amount of facial scruff named Philip (Sam Claflin), who falls for one of the mermaids (Astrid Berges-Frisbey), who’s been taken prisoner because her tears are required to activate the Fountain of Youth waters. (Don’t ask.) Ostensibly, this relationship is intended to replace the young-people-in-love subplot that Bloom and Knightley provided, but it’s so full of banal angst, it feels a little too much like something you’d see in the Twilight series. But surely that’s coming in the fifth Pirates movie: sexy werewolves.

On the face of it, Johnny Depp has done all he can to scuttle his image as a sex symbol. He’s played a transvestite film director with a fetish for angora sweaters. The actor, who returns to the screen Friday as the swishbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, has managed to maintain his status as a Hollywood star while defying every expectation of what such stardom requires. Expectations? What we expect at this point is weirdness. And we get it as these 10 Depp roles attest, in order of the most outrageous: 1. ED WOOD (1994) — Ed Wood is probably the epitome of eccentric Depp choices, one he imbued with a combination of artistic ambition, demented grins and utter delusion. 2. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (1990) — The first of seven films (thus far) with director Tim Burton, this offbeat fable about a young man with scissors for hands was Depp’s first foray into the decidedly strange. 3. BON BON IN BEFORE NIGHT FALLS (2000) — Depp plays a flamboyant, outrageously bewigged transvestite who smuggles the manuscripts of oppressed writer Reinaldo Arenas (Javier Bardem) out of Cuba. 4. THE MAD HATTER IN ALICE IN WONDERLAND (2010) — Depp was certainly mad, but multidimensional as well, bringing a great degree of humanity to one of his more excessive characterizations. 5. WILLY WONKA IN CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (2005) — A less candy-coated movie than the Gene Wilder-pow-

ered musical of 1971, and one much closer to the dark tone of the Roald Dahl book, this Burton extravaganza features Depp making far too great an effort to be unusual. 6. SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET (2007) — As the titular Victorian cutthroat, Depp sent an untold number of unwitting victims off his barber chair and into Mrs. Lovett’s oven, while doing little damage to the composer’s glorious music. 7. RAOUL DUKE IN FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS (1998) — Terry Gilliam’s adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson novel, with Depp as the drug-addled and often hallucinating Thompson stand-in Raoul Duke, probably defines the actor as a vehicle of social outrage and willful derangement. 8. WILLIAM BLAKE IN DEAD MAN (1995) — Directed by indie icon Jim Jarmusch, this otherworldly Western featured Depp as an accountant who, after murdering a man and escaping west, begins a spiritual odyssey led by an Indian guide named Nobody (Gary Farmer). 9. JACK SPARROW IN PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN (2003-2011) — The whole Pirates enterprise — a movie based on a theme-park ride? — looked like a distinct sellout when it first set sail. But the supposedly Keith Richards-inspired but definitely gay-accented Jack Sparrow made the whole thing a lot hipper than it might have been. 10. JOHN WILMOT IN THE LIBERTINE (2004) — Depp plays the licentious 17th century poet John Wilmot, aka the Earl of Rochester, who famously debauched his way to an early, syphilitic, alcoholic grave.
