Bethany Gilmer of Ranburne High School was among only 10 high school students statewide to be awarded the prestigious scholarship awards for 2009 by the Smith Scholarship Foundation. Each of the 2009 scholars is the first in his or her family to attend college. The foundation was endowed in honor of her parents by Alabama journalist/heiress, Mignon C. Smith. The Smith Foundation scholarships go to Alabama high school seniors to attend qualified Alabama colleges of
their choice, always subject to Smith Scholarship Foundation guidelines. A minimum C+ grade average and community volunteer work or special family responsibility is also required. Scholars must maintain a minimum grade of C+ to continue the four year scholarship. The value of each scholarship is approximately $15,000 annually. Each student has a mentor, a counselor and has workshops that teach how to interview, etiquette classes and how to dress appropriately for busi-
ness. This is the fourth class of Smith Scholarship Foundation scholars The fourthclass of Smith Scholarship Foundation had 550 applicants, and all but three counties had applicants. Nearly 70 Smith Foundation scholarships have been awarded to Alabama high school seniors by the Smith Foundation since the start of the program four years ago. State Superintendent of Education Joseph Morton cited the Smith Foundation scholarships as the largest endowment made to public schools in Alabama history.

On-line Christian school option for Heflin-area students
Lambert accepts award
America's newest high school is being built without the assistance of a single architect, engineer or contractor. That's because when St. Mark's Academy opens this fall, it will be completely online. "St. Mark's Academy provides an alternative for those middle and high school students whose needs are not being met in a traditional school setting," said Jamie Osborne,
the school's headmaster. "Our educational model is designed to provide a learning option that maximizes flexibility and personalization, without sacrificing academic quality." A key feature of the school is 24/7 on-demand access to e-instructors, said Osborne. These content-area experts - most of whom are Masters or Ph.D.-level educators - are just a mouse click away. In addition, St. Mark's digi-
tal curriculum offers a range of solutions to support students, from pre-high school Foundations level courses through college-level Advanced Placement. A series of virtual information sessions for parents and students is currently being planned, Osborne noted. For more information, visit the school's website at www. stmarksacademy.net or phone 1-866-296-3140.
Cleburne County fourth-grader Lindsey Lambert, second from left, and her teacher, Judy Langley, accept the award for honorable mention in the Alabama Farm-City Poster Contest from Alabama Farmers Federation President Jerry A. Newby, left, and Alabama Farm-City Chairman J. Paul Till, right. Lambert is a student at Ranburne Elementary School. As an honorable mention winner, she received $50 and her poster will appear in the 2010 Alabama Farm-City calendar. The presentation was made during the Alabama Farm-City Awards April 20 in Birmingham.

Miles wins first place in writing competition
Alexis Miles was the first prize winner of a writing competition held Miles by Jacksonville State University and memorializing the Holocaust. Her fictional piece in
the “2009 Imagining the Holocaust” netted her a $100 Savings Bond and the opportunity to present her story at the Annual Holocaust Memorial Commemoration. JSU developed the contest to focus on the importance of the Holocaust history and what it can teach us of the past, and enlighten us about
our present. By learning than they are. about the rationalizations, Alexis is the daughter prejudices, and stereotypes that made possible the deaths of millions of people between 1933 and 1945 in Europe, students are better able to recognize and think through the prejudices of their own societies and to develop tolerance to those who might be different
of Pam and Matt Miles of Heflin.
