From the Editor...

I

f you’re like me, you’re still waiting to make that list, much less, checking it twice. And if you’re ahead of the game, you really need to share your secrets-and quickly at that. Meanwhile, while we try and keep up with all the hurry and scurry and look for a little relaxation, too, we at Lakeside Living will go ahead and wish a happy and healthy holiday your way with this December issue. We’ll show you one of the newest lake area places to stop in for a bite and take a little time away from the kitchen this holiday season. Archie and Chris Garrett are waiting to welcome you to their dining establishment, Lakeside Southern Cuisine at Cropwell Commons, where you can find things southern and delicious, but on the healthy side, too. The Garretts give you options of grilled entrees and tasty wraps, dishes featuring whole wheat pastas and a whole lot more. They’re serving lunch and dinner, and offer catering and take out, too. We visit the lakefront home of Henry and Peggy Hall and hear from them how they came to find Logan Martin Lake. Their story involves airplanes and a love of the water, and Lakeside writer Emily McLain shares her visit with them with you. I decided to recall some of the family favorites at my house, and of all things, I’m talking on the sweet side here and that’s a little out of my league. My baking skills are less than adequate, but given time and a few trials and errors, I can usually turn out one or two of them, but not like by mother and aunts did. Here’s hoping you fare better than I do in that department, and I’m not kidding about “the best cheese straws ever.” I can remember lots of arguments over these holiday favorites, mainly over who got seconds and who didn’t. And believe it or not, even though we’re into the winter months now, there are still lots of things to see and do enjoying the outdoors on Logan Martin. It gets quieter out there this time of year, and the tranquility offers a different take on the busy summertime season.

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - December 2013

Our paddler takes us out for a gentle glide on a bright winter day, a perfect getaway from the busy days we’re in this time of year. You’ll meet quilter Adrienne Slater this month, whose skills at this art are such that she creates her own designs as well as stitches them. Her lakeside home is the perfect place for enjoying her pursuit, and she shares her story with Lakeside writer Shane Dunaway. Irene Bierbaum, with Incredible Touch German Upholstery in Cropwell, tells us about what we need to know to keep our lake crafts spruced up and pretty. She specializes in custom upholstery, and not just for boats and other craft, but for your outdoor furniture as well. Hers is a handy name to keep nearby to keep your investments at their very best. We at Lakeside Living hope your season is filled with all the things you like best, that your holidays are filled with great new memories and that for everyone, 2014 brings with it the best of all.

Art by the Water

Quilter Adrienne Slater loves to share her knowledge of quilting and its history with those who want to learn.

F

or five and a half decades, local quilter Adrienne Slater has had a fascination with fabrics, producing a variety of patterns from patchwork to constructing other colorful creations. “Quilting is a really fascinating art form,” Slater said. “The concept of quilting goes back since it was brought over from China. It’s basically two layers of fabric with something in between and what it does is trap the air. It has the capability of keeping warmer than just a plain

6

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - December 2013

piece of fabric, no matter how thick.” Slater began learning the quilting process from her grandmother at the age of 10 and she’s been teaching the skill on-and-off for the past 25 years. “I started at my grandmother’s kitchen table,” Slater said. “She was showing how to cut things and sew things. When I’d go home, she’d buy me fabrics to practice on. It must have been the most on-sale fabric in the world because it was ugly — it was probably give-away fabric.

Slater’s quilts are the perfect way tp brighten up a room and also a traditional way of staying cozy when the tempertaures take a dip.

She’d give me ugly fabric to practice on. To me, there’s no such thing as ugly fabric any more. I really enjoy ugly fabric now. It’s a challenge and often something other people can’t see in it.” While it served as a hobby in her youth, Slater said the skill maintained some semblance of importance in relation to her family’s survival. “It was almost a necessity,” Slater said. “We made quilts and used them for warmth. We’d sell them from time-to-time for a little extra money. It’s just something everybody did way back when.” Slater explained much of the history of quilting in America centered on thriftiness and flexibility of the quilter. “When it came to the United States back with the earliest settlers, we didn’t have mills, of course, so fabric was very scarce,” Slater said. “That’s when the patchwork quilts started because it was hard to find yardage, so

people would take every little scrap they could find and starting making designs out of it. America is really the beginnings of the earliest ideas of patchwork quilting. “From there, it really turned into an art form. Women started making their own designs and they started — like any other type of art form — putting a little history into them. So you’d have designs that might’ve been named after a famous battle or some sort of political figure. A lot of the history of quilting has gone into things like the Civil War and certain patterns reflected certain periods of time.” Depending on the level of knowledge a person has with fabrics, Slater stated a person could identify when a quilt was made. “I don’t think most people realize that fabric has a date and timestamp to it,” Slater said. “So you can look back on a particular quilt and say it was made in the 1930s if you can recognize the fabric that was printed during December 2013 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

that particular time. That’s how you date your quilts. It’s sort of like coincollecting.” Slater identified the block style as one of the most easily recognizable quilting style. “The reason they put it into a block form is because they often used paper to fold the patterns in a certain way and draw the patterns from the paper. Of course, we’ve gotten a lot more sophisticated nowadays because we 8

use measuring and cutting tools where you don’t have to use a piece of paper, a pencil and a pair of scissors.” Slated noted there are thousands of different block designs from the standard flying geese and bear paw to the historically significant eastern star and log cabin blocks. “What’s interesting about the log cabin block is that is has a small square in the middle of it,” Slater said. “The small square usually interprets

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - December 2013

the hearth, or the center of the home. It would usually be yellow or red, but back during the Underground Railroad time, if you put a black square in the center, it would signify a safe house.” The degrees of difficulty and the amount of time a person is willing to invest can influence how long it takes to complete a particular quilt. “The longest I ever worked on one quilt was about six months,” Slater said. According to Slater, she has produced more than 250 large-sized quilts in her lifetime. She recently completed a collection of 100 doll quilts for her granddaughter, Amelia Williams, who Slater has also been teaching the tools of the trade. “I started the doll quilt collection while I was teaching quilting because it seemed to me that it was a good idea to use the doll quilts as a little thumbprint to show people this is what a quilt looks like and if it were larger, you could see exactly what it would look like in a larger quilt,” Slater said. “One led to another and another and another to the point where I realized I had a pretty serious collection. It took me about three years to complete them all.” Of all the quilts she’s made over the years, Slater chose her “Storm at Sea” quilt as her favorite due to its significance within the family.

Recycle Old Traditions and Cherish Memories Old and New

“I guess it meant a lot to me because it was my oldest daughter’s wedding quilt, but she had also gone to Fiji for a school-related project,” Slater said. “I felt like that was a long way away, so I wanted to depict something that put the whole scenario into a picture – and I think it did. It (the quilt) showed the ocean, fish and the lighthouse representing home. There was a mariner’s compass that represented the Fiji Islands.” Slater has offered quilting classes through the Alabama Cooperative Extension System in Talladega. In early 2014, she will begin teaching quilting at Heritage Hall Museum in Talladega as she continues to ensure the tradition of quilting is kept alive. “Quilting is so much a part of our history, but it’s also a part of self-reliance and the creativity and skill sets that come along with it,” Slater said. “We’ve become a throw-away society where money buys everything and money does everything, but back in the old days, you stayed warm if you could make a quilt. You had money if you could go sell a quilt and buy something. “It was a way of life and you celebrated special events with it,’ Slater added. “Everybody that got married had a quilt given to them. They were passed down from generation to generation. It wasn’t just something one

person did either. People used to get together and have quilting bees, so it was a very social activity that brought women together who would otherwise be living far apart. But nowadays, people in our country are becoming more and more isolated.” While most people in the hustle-and-bustle modern era may say there’s simply not enough time for the precision and attention-to-detail-based activity of quilting, Slater emphasized she enjoys making the time for it in her dayto-day schedule. “That’s one of the beautiful parts about this lake is it makes you slow down and appreciate life a bit more,” Slater said. “Everything here is practically windows and doors, so everywhere you look, you can see the lake.” Despite the wealth of experience she has attained at the craft, Slater insisted she’s always learning and brainstorming. “You never get as good as you want to get because there’s always something different that you want to try. I think that’s why some women really get hooked on it because as soon as they finish one quilt, they have another idea that’s already popped up.” Contact Shane Dunaway at sdunaway@dailyhome. com

o say that there is no shortage of home cooking establishments around Logan Martin Lake would certainly be an understatement, and to say there were places offering healthy alternatives would be equally obvious. One of the things that makes Lakeside Southern Cuisine unique is that it offers both approaches on the same plate. Located in Cropwell Commons, Lakeside Southern Cuisine is also the newest eatery in the area, having just opened up as you read this. As this interview was being conducted, finishing touches were still being applied 12

to the interior, and owners Archie and Chris Garrett were awaiting final walk-throughs by the city building inspector and the county health department. Nephew Chris Garrett has worked in the restaurant and catering businesses for more than two decades, but for his uncle Archie, this is more a new endeavor. “I retired from the Department of Corrections after 33 and a half years, as an assistant warden 2, Archie explained. He spent 14 of those years in Springville, and settled in Pell City in 2008. He said he had done some work for

family reunions, “and it was a pleasure to have the opportunity to bring the family together. But I had no inkling of trying to open a restaurant.” That was Chris’s dream. “We were blessed and able to make it come true,” Archie said. “It’s a good example of our spiritual life, you pray for something and you succeed. We’re off to a good start so far, we’ve gotten a lot of community support.” Chris said he had worked in food service for the past 21 years. “I started out as a dishwasher, and I think I held every job in between, from checker to waiter all the way up to chef.” After working as a production manager and associate general manager in other people’s restaurants, then branched out into catering. He worked extensively 14

providing food for parochial schools in Mobile before taking the plunge in Pell City. As mentioned earlier, the hallmark of Lakeside Southern Cuisine will be home style dishes with healthier twists. “We use whole wheat pasta in all our dishes, and we offer grilled chicken as an alternative in all our chicken dishes,” Chris explained. “All of our vegetables are cooked with smoked turkey sausage that we get from Royal Sausage right here in Pell City. We’re focusing on healthy, but it’s still down home, too.” Other menu specials include wings, fried or grilled chicken, fried, grilled or baked fish, oxtails, greens, green beans, pinto beans, cabbage, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, yams, potato salad and rutabagas

They will also be offering homemade desserts, including cheesecake, red velvet cake and potato pie, a specialty creation by Archie’s wife. Shrimp and chicken dishes, chicken parmesan, regular and pulled pork lasagna and eventually pizzas will also make appearances on the menu. Lunch and dinner will be served seven days a week, and breakfast will be added a little later, Archie said. They will also be adding a pickup window for customers with only a little time to grab lunch. To contribute to the family atmosphere, there will be no alcohol for sale, and no smoking allowed in the restaurant. There are plans for a sports night and for special discounts for birthdays, anniversaries and “young at heart” parties. “We’re also going to be looking at doing some theme nights, like for Italian, Mexican, seafood and barbecue nights,” Chris said. They’ll know they’ve been to Lakeside.” “You can literally come here every day for a week and not eat the same thing twice,” Chris added. Archie also pointed out that most food would be made to order, not kept in a warmer. Off site catering will be available, either as a simple drop-off or set-up and serve options. “No number is too large,” Archie said. e traveled with his wife and children from California to Pell City, and he ended up staying, and becoming the owner of River’s Edge Marina. “I bought it in December 2006,” said Paul Emerick, who is originally from San Diego. “It will be seven years Dec. 1.” Paul said he first learned of Alabama from a friend. “I didn’t want to raise my kids in California,” he said. Paul said he traveled south and fell in love with the

area. “I wouldn’t go back if you paid me,” he said. Paul said he and his wife, Anna, came to Pell City on a Thursday, and bought a home on Sunday. The couple has three sons, Michael, 15; Anthony, 12; and Mathew, 6. Mathew was born in Alabama, while the older two boys were born in California. Paul said he likes being the owner of a marina along Logan Martin Lake, which is part of the Alabama

Fisherman Randy Brasher heads toward River’s Edge Marina, where he launches his boat during the winter.

Scenic River Trail. “When I first bought it, I worked 12 hours a day, seven days a week,” he said, adding that he doesn’t work near as much once since he got it organized. “I love it now.” The River’s Edge Marina is about as old as Logan Martin Lake. It was formerly called Rabbit Branch Marina, because it’s on Rabbit Branch, which is where I was paddling that day. I couldn’t ask for a more perfect day to paddle. There was virtually no wind, and it was cool, but not cold. The sun was shinning bright as I pulled away from River’s Edge Marina. When I arrived at the marina, it was closed. That’s the way it is during the winter. A lot of businesses along the lake either close or have limited hours of operations. Things do slow down along--and on the lake--during the winter months. Because it was a nice warm winter day, I expected to see a few more boats on the lake, but there were none. On my entire trip, I only saw one boat on the water. The boat was driven by Randy Brasher of Leeds. “We fished yesterday,” Randy told me. He launches his boat from River’s Edge Marina during the 20

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - December 2013

winter months, when the water is down. Randy has a lakefront home, but during the winter, he can’t launch his boat at his residence, so he launches from the marina. He ties his boat for the weekend along his pier or dock. “Our boat launch isn’t deep enough,” he said. “I wish they would bring it (the lake level) up that extra two feet.” There are attempts to keep the lake level up two feet higher than the normal winter pool level on Logan Martin Lake. The normal winter pool for Logan Martin Lake is 460 feet above sea level. The normal summer pool is five feet higher, at 465 feet. It doesn’t matter that much to Randy. He just wants to fish no mater what the level of the water is and he doesn’t care if it’s hot or cold outside. He’s primarily a bass fisherman and he has netted a spotted bass weighing about six-and-a-half pounds, and a largemouth topping the scales at more than seven pounds on Logan Martin Lake. He’s caught a striped bass weighing between 16-18 pounds on Logan Martin Lake, too. Randy and his son-in-law, Wayne Mason of Crossville,

312333

I traveled a scenic area of Rabbit Branch on my latest winter paddle venture.

Tenn., had a great day of fishing on the lake just the day before. It was much colder and windy. “We caught about 30 spots,” Wayne said. And that was only about a half-day of fishing. Wayne said he comes to Pell City to fish with his fatherin-law about 10 times a year. “I would like to come more,” he said. “There’s some good fishing.” Randy said Logan Martin Lake is a great lake for fishing. “I grew up on this lake, sort of, so to speak,” he said. His parents bought lake property actually before the water on the lake was backed up. Randy said he hopes to live along the lake full-time in another three years. “That’s my goal,” he said. “I really enjoy this area. St. Clair County is growing. It’s a progressive county. They have come a long way.” When I left River’s Edge Marina, which is located on Rabbit Branch Road, I headed up the branch toward U.S. 231. There wasn’t another soul around. It was really relaxing. Because of the lower water level there were dry sandy areas in the middle of the branch. I just maneuver around the dry areas. 22

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - December 2013

My plan was to paddle all the way to U.S. 231, but because of the lower water level, it was too shallow. I got close though. I could hear cars traveling down U.S. 231, but couldn’t actually see the highway. It had to only be right around the bend. Crows were cawing as I headed up the branch and big herons flew overhead. It was so peaceful. As I went back past River’s Edge Marina, I met Mark Stewart and Karen Glover of Hayden. Karen was in her favorite spot on the back of a boathouse reading a book. “We don’t miss many weekends,” she said. “As much as we love the summer here, it doesn’t really matter.” She said Mark would live up here, if he could, and he’s been coming to Logan Martin Lake for the past 20 years. “We have the most beautiful sunset right here,” Karen said. And Rabbit Branch is really a beautiful area of Logan Martin Lake. I can’t wait to explore more of it. And during the quieter months, taking in the beauty of the lake is altogether different. So until next time, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Memories From the Holiday Table

Special treats for special occasions Story and Photos by LAURA NATION-ATCHISON

T

here are just certain things we all experience when it comes to holidays, and let’s be honest… lots of it has to do with one thing. Food. At least that’s what my memory bank holds dear, along with the official gatherings, the conversations and personalities and everything else that went with them. The list of favorites on my family’s table for Christmas is far too long to relive in entirety here, and probably, you

24

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - December 2013

could take the old home movies of our holiday moments and these could be the memories of just about anyone else from the same era. There was nothing all that special to me with the main courses, they were kind of expected and the kinds of things we might have here and there through the year, whether it was Christmas or not. Turkey, ham, dressing and sweet potatoes, those weren’t the things we usually got all that excited about.

324946

Even the real made the hard old fashioned way light as a feather yeast rolls and biscuits, too…it seems some favored one over the other, so there you go. Someone had to make them both. When it came to the sweets on the menu, they were in a category all their own. The list of creations on that “menu” was at least as long as the real Christmas dinner menu itself. Looking back, it was probably because mine was a family, like most others, out to please everyone with a seat at the table. And, it seemed that everyone at that table had a favorite and yes, it had better be there. Many of us shared the same favorites, or perhaps “some” of us had multiple favorites, hence the long list of “dessert entrees.” I remember the year I discovered “the trick,” that being the means by which certain people always had plenty of whatever it was they favored for the dessert course(s)-or whatever else it was they were craving. I was probably in my mid-twenties when I finally figured it out. I was rummaging around looking for something and ended up inside my Aunt Rosalie’s pantry. It was there I spotted the big stash of potato salad stuffed in-between the cans of Campbell’s soup and tomato paste. My surprise made me pick it up, return to the table where everyone else was, hold it up and say “What’s going on here? I found this in the pantry!” Everyone else just sort of died laughing, and then my cousin Lee stood up to claim his bowl. Needless to say, when I later started to find other things normally found on the table or out in the kitchen stuffed away in hiding, I just kept my mouth shut or re-hid it just to throw the person off. But this habit we had of hiding extra shares of favorites was well earned, and that’s why I’m giving up some of our family’s old Christmas dessert tried and trues for this issue of Lakeside. I bet everyone has this list. The real winners were always the whipped cream pound cake and I think there was always a lemon one, too; Nannie’s “S” cookies and Aunt Joey’s pecan molasses cookies along with her jelly cookies and the have to have of all, those wafer thin cheese straws that had a certain punch of cayenne pepper I’ve never found in anyone else’s but at our table. Whose recipe that really was, none of us know, but I strongly suspect Aunt Joey. Not really known for her expertise in the kitchen, my mother latched onto that one and did a really good impression with them and the pound cake, too. Oh no, I almost forgot the bourbon balls. I could smell them before they hit the table they were so strong. I think these came from Aunt Joey, too.

26

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - December 2013

Maybe that’s why the holiday conversations kept getting louder and louder as the evenings wore on in my family. I think the “grownups” were really out there in the dining room passing around a little something more than the bourbon balls if you know what I mean. Holidays…memories…here’s to all who made them and to those who are still making them. You’ll be remembered. Happy holidays, everyone. Since we were on the subject last, let’s start with the bourbon balls, huh? Blame it on Aunt Joey Bourbon Balls-you might want to add to the prescribed bourbon amount…I think she did! What you need: Two and a half cups vanilla wafers, crushed Two tablespoons cocoa One and a fourth cups icing sugar One half cup bourbon or spiced rum Two tablespoons white corn syrup (Karo for example) One cup chopped pecans or walnuts What you do Sift cocoa with one cup of the sugar, then stir in the bourbon or rum already mixed with the corn syrup. Add crushed vanilla wafers and nuts and mix thoroughly. Shape mixture into walnut sized balls and dredge in remaining sugar or you can leave them plain. Note: These should be stored in a tin with a tight lid. Also, they’re even better if made as far as a week ahead, the flavors blend together better. Serving them frozen works well, too-they don’t harden like you might think! This recipe makes two dozen. Nannie’s S Cookies…I found out these had Italian origins…now it all makes sense…so did Nannie! I also read that these were once made using a meat grinder with a homemade funnel attached… I didn’t try it myself… What You Need Three and a half cups unbleached all-purpose flour One tablespoon baking powder One half teaspoon baking soda One teaspoon salt Four large eggs Two cups sugar One cup solid vegetable shortening, melted and cooled Two tablespoons fresh lemon juice One tablespoon vanilla What you do: Preheat oven to 350. Sift together the flour, baking

powder, baking soda and salt into a bowl. In another bowl, whisk the eggs with the sugar until light and lemon colored. Whisk in the shortening, lemon juice and vanilla. Gradually stir in the flour mixture, mixing well to blend the ingredients. Then, let the batter sit, covered, for five minutes. Fill a tipless pastry bag two-thirds full of the batter to form three inch long “S’s” on cookie sheets, or drop heaping teaspoons of dough onto ungreased cookie sheets, spacing them about one and a half inches apart, then shape each into a three inch long S, using the back of a spoon. Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes, or until pale golden in color. Keep a close watch on them and rotate the baking sheets to prevent burning. Let cookies cool some on the sheets before removing them to cooling racks. The cookies are soft when they are first out of the oven, but will become crisper as they cool. And finally, the “I’m Not Kidding, the Best in the World Cheese Straws” (If you don’t like them crisp, this isn’t for you!) What you need: (this recipe makes about four dozen) Three 10 ounce bricks sharp cheddar cheese, shredded cold, then left at room temperature One cup (two sticks) butter, softened Four cups sifted all-purpose flour Two teaspoons salt One fourth teaspoon cayenne pepper Dash of garlic powder 28

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - December 2013

Equipment needed: Cookie press with a star or ribbon tip What you do: Preheat oven to 325 degrees Put softened cheese and butter in the bowl of a heavy duty mixer. Using the heaviest mixer paddle, beat until the mixture has the consistency of whipped cream. In a large bowl, sift three cups of the flour with the salt, pepper and garlic powder. Gradually add the seasoned flour to the cheese mixture by large spoonfuls, beating well after each addition. Add the remaining cup of unseasoned flour in increments until the dough is somewhat stiff, but still soft enough to be pushed through a cookie press. (You may not need to add all of the flour.) Set out four ungreased cookie sheets. Put a portion of the dough into the cookie press fitted with the star tube or ribbon mold and press the dough onto the sheets in long strips running the length of the pan. Repeat until the pan is full. Bake until the straws are golden brown and crisp, about 20 minutes. Using your hands or a sharp knife, break or cut the long strips into three inch lengths. Use a flat thin spatula or an egg turner to remove cheese strips from the pan. Allow them to cool on a wire rack. When completely cool, serve or store in a tightly covered container. Notes: If you don’t have a cookie press, form the dough into one inch balls, then flatten them with a fork for round straws. The thinner they are, the crisper they will be. Unlike this original recipe directs, I remember my mother making them and cutting the dough into strips onto the cookie sheets as they came out of the press.

Flying High on Logan Martin Halls design relaxing lake home Story by EMILY McLAIN Photos by BRIAN SCHOENHALS

T

hey’ve traveled all over the world, but all it took was one ride over Logan Martin Lake for Henry and Peggy Hall to see it as their next home. The longtime Atlanta residents traded city life for lake living about eight years ago after that fateful flight to Pell City.

30

“We’ve had a lake home since 1980, and we had just sold our house on Lake Lanier,” Henry explained. “A friend and I flew over here one day to look at some parts for an aircraft. As we were taking off, we took off to the south and came right over the lake, and I’m looking down, and I thought this would be a great place for us to

have another home on the lake. So we came back over and bought the property and built the house. The couple’s decision was aided by the opportunity to partake in their favorite hobbies in the Pell City area. For Henry, a pilot and owner of a Tecnam Eaglet plane, that meant involvement with the Pell City December 2013 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

The Halls decided to keep most of their lake property in a natural setting. They enjoy the diverse wildlife it attracts.

Airport, and for Peggy, that entailed becoming a member of the Pell City Garden Club. The couple is also recently retired from the Civil Air Patrol as lieutenant colonels after 20 years of service – a retirement ceremony is coming this month. “We moved here for the lake and the airport,” Henry said. “I’ve been flying about 50 years, and that has been my primary hobby and social life. Peggy enjoys gardening and is part of the garden club and she also does some painting and artwork. We also like to travel, like many people our age.” With the chance to create their own home, the couple crafted a brick house with a one-level living area and fewer, but larger rooms, than their previous homes. The downstairs was built to be suitable for 32

both Peggy’s art hobby as well as entertaining guests. Throughout the two-bedroom home is classic décor and furniture, with some special family heirlooms mixed in, including the kitchen table and chairs that belonged to Henry’s mother. Their eat-in kitchen also features a hardwood floor, extra nice cabinetry (a must for Peggy) and ample marble countertops. The living room is comfortably furnished with an entertainment center that has a retractable TV stand. The standout feature of the space is large windows that offer a full view of the water. An attached screened-in porch is where the couple, both retired for 32 years, frequently have breakfast or enjoy morning coffee, weather permitting. The master bedroom is plenty spacious with a 12-foot headboard and a lounge area that includes a

TV, couch and chair. “This room turned out bigger than we had planned,” Peggy said. “Our neighbor walked through when we were still building and asked if this was the den, and we said no, this is the bedroom. She said what do you need a bedroom this size for? But we made it work.” Both the master and the guest bedrooms have French doors that open to a false balcony. Peggy said they designed it that way in case they ever decided to build on a balcony across the rear of the house. Though they no longer plan to do that, it is “so nice to have the doors open and allow some fresh air and light into the house,” she said. The master bathroom is equally as luxurious as the bedroom, with a Jacuzzi tub, built-in shower, a private toilet, and two sinks with a vanity in between. An office at the front of the house tells the story of the Halls life together. 34

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - December 2013

Photo collages filled with pictures of Henry and Peggy at different stages in life line the hallway – young and sunbathing, on their wedding day, middle aged and traveling in China, celebrating the Fourth of July on Hudson Bay…the list goes on. In the office are walls full of model airplanes and collectible model cars , one for each of the cars they have owned over their lives, and a picture of their first plane that they were able to make a down payment on after Peggy sold her red convertible before they got married about 50 years ago. Downstairs is a living room/office and a kitchenette. The sofa bed makes it a great place for company, but when it’s just the two of them, Peggy uses the space for painting and creating window art – something she has been doing seriously for about six years. Her paintings of outdoor scenes and fruits are on display in the kitchenette.

Use of color and trim and tiered ceilings add distinction to the Hall’s home.

Typically, the kitchen is the heart of the home, but for the Halls, their lake home comes to life in the backyard. The couple frequents the water in the summer on one of their two boats or various other water toys, which are kept along with their airplane in a hangar Henry calls the “toy box.” Peggy enjoys kayaking and, of course, gardening in their yard. “We don’t have a manicured yard, and that was by choice,” she said. “We wanted a more natural yard without a lot of maintenance.” A large concrete patio at lake level was designed for entertaining, and an area by the water boasts a fire pit and cozy seating – perfect for the recent chilly nights. A hand rail leading into the lake makes easy access for when Peggy kayaks. The couple says they find Lake Logan Martin much more enjoyable than Lake Lanier. “I like this lake better,” Peggy said. “It’s a very 36

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - December 2013

peaceful lake. This is mostly pontoon boats and fishermen. On Lanier, you have 60 or 100-plus foot house boats and big boats that put out 4-foot wakes. On the weekends, you can’t boat or kayak there because it’s so crowded and the water is so rough.” In addition to the calm waters, Peggy said they enjoy watching the wildlife that passes through their yard, from deer to waterfowl to fish that she regularly feeds in the summertime. For a couple who has been all over the world – Russia, China, Europe, the Mediterranean, to name a few places – it’s the simple pleasures of Logan Martin that make it their home sweet home. “We enjoy the house,” Peggy said. “Henry likes to travel and go other places, but I say, I live in a resort, why do I want to go somewhere else? It’s beautiful here.” Contact Emily McLain at eadams@dailyhome.com.

Networking Is Important to Mike Coupland Treat people the way you want to be treated

I

Mike Coupland

f you ask Mike Coupland, there’s no better place on earth than St. Clair County, especially Moody. He’s lived around Moody and Odenville all his life, and “I’ve never really wanted to be anywhere else,” he said. A broker at Moody Realty, Coupland joined his father in the real estate business. Carl Coupland had been in real estate since the late 1960s, and after Mike Coupland got his license in 1984, they started Moody Realty together in 1985. “We’ve been on the same block ever since,” Coupland said. Their office is at 2841 Moody Parkway, and they work in residential, land sales, commercial sales and development. “One reason we do such a variety of things is that much of our business is repeat business and referrals. You never know where that’s going to lead you. You may have sold a home to someone 10 years ago, and then they send you someone who needs to find a business location or commercial property. Networking has played a big part in things for us,” he said. “We try to treat people the way we would want to be treated. When we work for someone, whether buying or selling, we tell them two things: We will work hard for you, and we will be honest with you.” Moody Realty is a small but active company. Working along with Coupland and his father, Carl, is Realtor Paula Krafft, who has been with the company for 14 years. “We represent buyers and sellers throughout St. Clair County and

surrounding areas,” he said. “I am proud to be in a county and an area that has continued to grow despite the economy. The citizens of St. Clair County are very blessed to have the leadership in place at the county and local levels that communicate well and work together to achieve common goals for the benefit of the county, the municipalities and their citizens,” he said. With a seven year background in commercial construction and having had a homebuilders license for more than 20 years, Coupland has built a number of buildings and homes through the years – some for businesses, family and friends, and some for sale. The business in general has been an easy fit for his lifestyle. He loves the outdoors, fishing, hunting and working at his farm. He also enjoys sharing his time with church, family and friends. He is also a member of the St. Clair County Association of Realtors, National Association of Realtors and the Birmingham Area Multiple Listing Service. Moody Realty has been involved in the development of a number of subdivisions, and several commercial buildings and developments throughout the county. Moody Realty has been instrumental in working with the City of Moody and St. Clair County Board of Education in helping procure land for various projects, along with helping locate a number of businesses in the city including financial institutions, fast food restaurants and other service businesses.

“Moody is a wonderful place. We have a great Chamber of Commerce, parks, recreation, and ball fields, including the Miracle League Field. The people are also very friendly. Moody has a number of positive things in the works including two travel centers at Exit 147 of I-20 that will be opening soon along with several other things that should be announced in the coming months,” he said. Coupland’s wife, Jeanie, is an office manager for dentist Dr. James Stone in Leeds. Their twin daughters are both Moody residents and registered nurses: Beverly (Alex) Armstrong at UAB and Ginger (Jeremy) Gilbert at Children’s of Alabama. Their first grandchild, Jackson Gilbert, was born in August. The Couplands are members of Church of the Highlands at the Grant’s Mill campus. In the future, Coupland hopes the county and city “will continue to have great leadership and that all the elected officials will continue to work together to accomplish goals that benefit the cities and their citizens.” With an improving economy and lack of availability of new homes, he personally wants to fill this niche and trend toward some new home construction. For his agency, Coupland intends “to continue to grow and serve our customers and clients in a manner in which we would want to be treated. The needs of our customers and clients are most important.” To contact Coupland, call 205-6407671 or email: mike@moodyrealtyal. com.
