AIDB baccalaureate service set for May 28 The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind’s 2009 baccalaureate service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 28, at Hawkins Chapel on the

Alabama School for the Deaf campus. The ceremony marks a new beginning for 32 gradu-

ates representing AIDB’s three schools; Alabama School for the Blind, Alabama School for the Deaf and Helen Keller School of Alabama.

Alabama School for the Blind Alabama School for the Blind will have commencement at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, in the Oliver Hall Auditorium. The speaker for the event will be former Alabama School for the Blind principal and current AIDB Board of Trustee member Ronald Garrett. She also serves as drum major of the SHS Half-Million Dollar Marching Aggie Band, Drama Committee Chair of the SHS Focus Program, and Treasurer of Teen Intervention and Prevention Program. NEW YORK (AP) — Looking for ways to keep your tween or young teen busy over the summer? Here are six ideas to pull them away from the computer, the television and the cell phone: • Look into teen classes, said Carol Weston, advice columnist for Girls’ Life magazine. Summer school might not excite, but look for classes in areas kids may have an interest in, like writing, drama, art or lifeguarding. • Help kids find work, such as baby-sitting, car washing, dog walking or lawn mowing, said Weston. Perhaps you know someone who could use some extra help in his office. Kids want to make extra money. • Check churches, soup kitchens, senior centers, animal shelters and the like to see if they need volunteers. • Investigate local summer programming. Try the YMCA, library, colleges, museums or even health clubs. For example, Lifestyle Family Fitness has free summer memberships for teens 12 to 17 in all 55 of its locations. • Consider a kid swap, suggests Weston. One parent can take the kids on an outing one day, another can take them somewhere another day. • Explore summer camp options. Many have counselorin-training or other programs for teens. Internships can help students choose a career path (MS) — Many students look at deciding on a career path in a similar way to choosing a snack from a vending machine. They simply consider all of the options behind the glass, pick one and hope it satisfies them. But choosing a career doesn’t have to be hit or miss. While school coursework can provide an idea of whether a specific area of study will be the right fit, hands-on experience can be the extra reinforcement needed. This is why career counselors frequently mandate that students participate in internships or co-op opportunities as part of graduation requirements. Internships are structured work experiences offered by

participating companies and organizations. Their goal is to give students an idea of the real working world and allow them to see how information acquired during class is readily applied to the business environment. Typically, internships allow students to better understand the differences between various jobs and functions within organizations and how a company operates on a day-to-day basis. Usually, students are approved for internship credits by a career or guidance counselor. The internship can be performed on a full- or part-time basis and the student will be issued credits accordingly. Typically, there is

no compensation other than credits toward coursework. Internships can be instrumental to students who are not sure if a certain career path is right for them. By participating in the daily activities essential to this type of employment (and not just the busy work of faxing, e-mailing and running errands that many interns must endure), they can clearly see if this is something that can provide a fulfilling career. Many times, through internships, students learn they are not happy with an occupation and take steps to find other courses that offer a new direction. Without the benefit of the internship, graduates may have gotten stuck in a career that doesn’t challenge or interest them

much. Guidelines When Choosing Internships 1. Research the school’s internship policy. Internships may be restricted to either junior or senior year with a limit set on the number of internship credits allowed. 2. Most schools have a listing of pre-approved companies and organizations that can host interns. Participating companies often must meet a list of requirements and prove that they will comply with school regulations. However, if there is a place you would like to intern that is not on the list, see if you can facilitate the approval of this company. 3. The internship location

and internship advisor at the business become your classroom and professor away from campus. The same behavior and work ethic you apply to your schoolwork should be carried through when interning. Also remember that you are a representative of the school, so poor behavior could negatively impact the company’s willingness to host interns in the future. 4. Try to do two internships in various areas of your coursework. For example, if you are majoring in communication arts — a wide area of study — select a public relations firm and perhaps a local newspaper as possible internships so you can decide what fits your personality better.

Technology seems to be making daily changes to how companies do business. But while technology is certainly leaving its mark, so too is an ideological shift with respect to work. Whereas it was once common for people to choose a career path and stick with it until it came time to retire, more and more of today’s workers find themselves making at least one career change during their lifetime. Finding the right college big choice for parents, children (MS) — While a fresh crop of high school graduates is set to walk across the stage at high school commencement ceremonies across the country, for the many students about to become high school seniors now is an important

time to start thinking ahead. That’s because the college application process is about to begin. Choosing a college is a big choice for parents and children alike. For parents, it’s a financial commitment they’ve

likely been preparing to make since the day their child was born. For kids, it’s more than likely the biggest decision they’ve ever faced. Before the process begins, consider the following tips for choosing

the right college. · Consider a possible career path. Most 18-year-olds have no idea what they might want to do for a living, and that’s perfectly fine. When looking at colleges, kids should look at all of the programs

they offer, and make a list of the programs that most interest them. This isn’t choosing a career (as many students change majors while in college), but rather doing some preliminary research about what you may want to study.

Getting a good job in a questionable economy It takes persistence, a willingness to try new things With graduation fast approaching for many of the nation’s young people, the questionable economy is no doubt a concern for the hundreds of thousands of soonto-be-minted grads about to enter the job market. And with many economists and other prognosticators predicting the economy won’t bounce back until 2010, such trepidation is completely understandable. While the current job market is less than ideal, prospective grads should recognize there’s nothing they can do to improve the job market. There are, however, a handful of things those about to enter the work force can do improve their standing. It just takes some persistence and some willingness to try new things in an effort to get

that first job. • Seek internships. While it’s common to associate internships with undergraduates, in the current economy grads should be willing to take anything that can help them get their foot in the door. An internship offers an insider’s view to a company and a field of work, allowing interns to get a better grasp of how a given business works and what they can bring to such a business. Such a view from inside could help new graduates in an interview down the road when being considered for a full-time position. With unemployment rates so high, internship opportunities, though unpaid, could be on the rise, as companies seek help to meet customer demands with smaller staffs. And with the economy wide-

ly expected to bounce back in 2010, interns could be among the first to get job offers once the economy does take a turn for the better. • Go the extra mile. When sending a resume, especially in the current economy, you run the very real risk of being among thousands of applicants. Simply sending the bare minimum won’t make you stand out and will likely land your resume in a human resource department’s scrap heap. When responding to an ad, rather than sending out a form letter and resume, tailor each depending on the prospective employer. Other materials, such as writing samples for writing-based jobs or design samples (professional or from class) for graphic design positions, can

be included as well to help you stand out from the rest. • Network. Networking can be difficult, particularly for recent graduates, but many people end up finding work through word of mouth from friends, family members or business associates of parents or even professors. Those about to enter the job market should use their school’s alumni network to the fullest of their advantage. Also, discussing a job search with university advisors can be a good way to gain perspective on job hunts, such as how past students might have found jobs. When looking for a job, it never hurts recent graduates to discuss the search with as many people as possible. One never knows from where their next opportunity might come.

Essay tips for high school juniors As a host of current high school seniors are readying themselves to don a cap and gown and walk across a graduation stage to accept their diplomas, an entirely new class of would-be seniors is waiting in the wings to take their place atop the high school food chain. While ruling the social roost is often the one thing would-be seniors most anxiously anticipate, there’s also a lot of work ahead in the coming months for current high school juniors. Perhaps no task is more important for current juniors

than deciding where to apply to college, and how to make those applications the best they can possibly be. Of particular importance is the college essay, where prospective college students set themselves apart by writing thoughtfully and in a way that compels an admissions board to look at them as serious candidates for admission to a given university. When writing a college essay, today’s juniors should remember the following. • Keep things personal: An effective college essay will let an admissions board understand who you are,

as opposed to what you’ve done. Your activities list and high school transcripts will let them know what you’ve done, but an effective essay should give them a glimpse of who you are as a person. • Be specific: Being specific doesn’t necessarily mean you need to write things like, “I want to go to medical school to study orthopedic surgery.” Most high school juniors have no idea what they want to be. However, you can be specific about what you hope to gain from college, as opposed to using predictable cliches such as, “I hope to have a great experience.”

• Don’t make an essay into a resume: Too often, college applicants use their essays as a means to recite their high school resume. Rather than repeating items that are included elsewhere in the application, use the essay as a chance to explain how your resume has helped mold you into the person you are today and how this makes you a viable candidate for admissions. For example, rather than simply saying, “I played varsity baseball for three seasons,” say, “My experience playing varsity baseball taught me to work well with others and contribute to goals that were bigger than myself.”

Student debt is increasing (MS) — According to the Project on Student Debt, the average student loan debt increased by 8 percent from 2005 to 2006. For a student who graduated in 2006, that equated to roughly $21,000 of student loan debt upon graduation. Graduates from schools in Washington, D.C., faced the highest average debt with nearly $28,000 owed upon graduation. On the opposite end of the spectrum, students who graduated from institutions in Hawaii accumulated the lowest average debt at less than $12,000. While there are no concrete reasons for the disparity between those figures, the latter might be due to the high amount of in-state students who attend schools in

Hawaii, as tuition for in-state students is often far less than that for out-of-state. Since Hawaii is so far away from the mainland United States, more students are inclined to stay in-state as they further their education beyond secondary school. Also of note is the disproportionate number of New England states on the highest average debt list (New Hampshire, Vermont and Connecticut follow D.C. on the highest average debt list). That is no doubt due to the region’s higher proportion of private schools, where tuition is typically higher than instate schools. Whereas the number of private schools nationally is 66 percent, that figure rises considerably to 81 percent in New England.

Helping new high school grads understand what lies ahead for them Beginning college can prove to be difficult in a number of ways (MS) — With graduation on the horizon, many high school seniors are anxiously anticipating their exodus from Mom and Dad’s house to the less restrictive dorms of their colleges of choice. Visions of parties, late school nights spent hanging out with friends, and no Mom and Dad to check in on them populate the dreams of many a high school senior as graduation draws closer and closer.

But as exciting as beginning college can be, it can also prove difficult in a number of ways if soon-to-be freshmen aren’t prepared for what may lie ahead. Parents and college-bound kids alike should discuss the following topics before parting ways this fall.

Parents should also discuss credit cards with their children before the kids head off to school. College campuses are notorious breeding grounds for credit card solicitation. Kids who don’t fully understand the concept of credit can, and often do, find themselves in deep financial trouble because of credit cards. If a student has his or her own cell phone (and who doesn’t these days?), let your son or daughter begin paying for it in the months before he leaves for college. This should help get him or her acclimated to paying bills, and the importance of paying them on time, before heading off to school.

Finances It seems that no matter how much money kids head off to college with, it’s never enough. This is especially true of entering freshmen, who have more than likely never faced living on a budget before. If a student will not be working and their parents will be sending them money during the semester, it’s best to work out a payment schedule (once per semester, once per month, bi-monthly, etc.) and stick to it. Parents should avoid the temptation of bailing kids out if they’ve spent their allotted money too quickly, just like students

Academics Understandably, most students start off struggling in the academic department. This often has nothing to do with the course load. Instead, it’s typically the product of students being overwhelmed by their newfound freedom, resulting in studies sliding down their priority list. Incoming freshmen should recognize that, while struggling to adapt to a new course load and new environment is to be expected, it’s not an excuse for a prolonged academic struggle. The point of going to college is an education first and foremost.

GoCollege.com, an online resource for college-bound students, recommends developing a diligent and consistent system of study habits to avoid digging an early academic hole. This can involve study groups, brief study periods after each class to make sure you understand all materials, or a number of things that might work for each individual. But the main thing is to be consistent in your study approach, as once you get it down, you’ll be more efficient and able to enjoy more of that enticing free time. Social Life While education is the most important thing about college, developing socially is important as well. For some students, overfocusing on academics can make college a difficult period in their life. Particularly for entering freshmen, developing friendships is an important step in adapting to college. Students should embrace the chance to meet new people, many of whom might be from different parts of the country or even the world, which can be an educational process in and of itself. While social life should never take precedence over academics, balancing work and play is something students will have to do the rest of their lives, and part of college is preparing them to do just that. Parents should make students aware that academics are important, but that developing as a human being and not just as a student is important as well. Did you know? Major determines what grads make (MS) — College students majoring in chemical engineering can expect to earn more than their fellow graduates right out of the gate. According to a study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), new college graduates with degrees in Chemical Engineering were offered an average of $59,361 in the summer of 2007. That’s a better than 5 percent increase from the salaries they were offered the year before. Computer engi-

neering grads were second on the list, fielding offers that averaged slightly more than $56,000 per year directly out of college. Rounding out the top five were graduates with electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and computer science degrees, each of whom averaged offers better than $53,000 per year right out of college. On the opposite end of the spectrum, psychology majors might want to pick up a second major if they’re looking to make money upon graduation. Psychology

majors received the lowest offers directly out of college, averaging offers of $31,631 upon graduation. But psychology majors should be encouraged as the offers mark a nearly 5 percent increase from those received by those who graduated in 2006. Salaries rose for new grads across the board in 2007, although the increase didn’t much benefit graduates with degrees in history, English or sociology, each which averaged offers less than $34,000

‘Class of Katrina’ graduating, four years after storm By KEVIN McGILL Associated Press writer

NEW ORLEANS — In the months after Hurricane Katrina swamped the University of New Orleans campus in August 2005, the basketball team practiced at a school six hours away in Texas and played almost its entire season on the road, winning just three games. Some team members quit, but for those who stuck it out, “it made us closer,” said Jada Frazier, who was a freshman from Albany, Ga. “I strongly believe that sometimes you have to go through some hardships and changes in order to become a stronger person,” she said. “And I don’t think I could have gone anywhere else and become the person that I am today.” Frazier is a member of the Class of Katrina — the graduating college seniors who were brand-new freshmen when the hurricane plunged New Orleans into anarchy and ruin four years ago. While many of their classmates left and never came back, they returned, whether out of loyalty to their school or affection for the city. And for some of them, it was a life-changing experience. Tulane University student Denali Lander, an English major from Boulder, Colo., helped start a nonprofit relief effort called the NOLA Fund. Originally a source of aid for families displaced by the storm, it evolved into a program providing students at a New Orleans public school with technology training and free laptops. “I’ve always been a civicminded person, I like to think. But certainly the hurricane kind of put that at the forefront of my interest,” Lander said. Many of New Orleans’ freshmen had barely unpacked and decorated their dorm rooms when the city was ordered evacuated because the levees broke. Administrators returned weeks later to find major damage at Dillard University, Xavier University, the University of New Orleans and Southern University at New Orleans. Tulane and Loyola universities fared better. Other colleges around the country took in New Orleans’ students for a semester before classes finally resumed in the city in January 2006 — in trailers at some of the flooded campuses or, in the case of Dillard, at a hotel. It was a dreary, depressing experience. An international business and Spanish major, Ashlee Yates of Memphis, Tenn., recalled a Dillard gym piled ceiling-high with the belongings of students who wouldn’t be coming back for them. Her dorm room had flooded, and she had lost everything. “The morale became really, really low after the hurricane,” Yates said. “A lot of students that came in with me aren’t here anymore.” Jazmine Boutte, a student at Dillard, didn’t just lose what she had on campus; her

family in New Orleans lost their home to flooding. It was, she said, a shock to her thenmaterialistic soul when she wound up in Houston with no extra clothes, dependent on the kindness of strangers. “I’ve really changed from how I was. I would never want Wal-Mart clothes and things like that, and that’s what I had to resort to right after we evacuated,” Boutte said. “I just never thought I would have to have people giving me things when I used to be the one giving all the time.” When she returned to New Orleans, Boutte helped paint and clean damaged property, tutored schoolchildren and participated in the building of a Habitat for Humanity house. She also took part in a 2006 rally to encourage displaced residents to vote — the kind of civic-minded activity she said she never would have participated in before. “I was kind of materialistic before Katrina. I’ve really learned not to take anything for granted,” she said. “My whole views on having this and having that have really changed.” Matt Limback, a Tulane student from Chesterfield, Mich., who had to flee less than 24 hours after arriving on campus, said he never gave any thought to transferring to another school. When he returned, the university dispatched him and others to the hardest-hit areas of the city to help with the cleanup. “It was pretty dismal when on the first couple of weekends back they send you down to the Ninth Ward, where you’re going through houses where you find dead animals, dead pets,” Limback said. But he and other graduating students said they were grateful to have been part of the city’s healing. Charles Figley, a psychologist and disaster trauma expert who was recruited to work at Tulane after the storm, said the students’ reaction is common among those who have withstood great hardship: “They have a source of inspiration and self-confidence that emerge as a result of some terrible disaster.” Recognition of the graduating Katrina veterans is planned at commencement ceremonies, beginning this weekend. Tulane, where more than 1,100 of this year’s 2,000 graduates are former Katrina exiles, will distribute a program with a photo essay on the disaster and a list of 600 universities that took in Tulane students in 2005. Similarly, at Dillard, seniors promenading through the university’s majestic oaks will carry banners thanking universities that hosted them after Katrina. While graduation will be a goodbye to New Orleans for many, some are staying. Lander said she will spend at least two more years here through the Teach For America program, having found in New Orleans — with its rich urban mix of African, Caribbean and European influences — the diversity she was seeking when she finished high school.
