Over the years, Robinson has tilted away from the absolutism of the 1960s and tried to “reimagine what revolution” can be. In his novels, he posits a scientific, gradualist, nonviolent view of how progress can occur.

Chamber quartet to perform in Jacksonville Sunday Ready for a soothing Sunday afternoon? The music by a chamber quartet, mixed with a few very stimulating pieces by famous European composers — at Jacksonville’s First Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m.

“Some people don’t know how much they will like classical music until they hear it,” Susan Di Biase, the group’s cellist, said.

“When they do, they find it enjoyable and often, familiar.”

Chamber music was written to be played in people’s chambers or living rooms in recent history. Before that, it was heard in palaces when royalty employed musicians for festivities. But whether the venue is a princely court or church sanctuary, music lovers find it satisfying.

“It’s a way to share music among friends and family,” Di Biase said. “That’s the tradition, and it’s worth keeping alive.”

The music selected gives each instrument a chance to showcase its voice.

“The Musical Offering” by Johann Sebastian Bach includes several movements, from slow to fast, and it is a conversation between flute and violin.

It was presented to Frederick the Great of Prussia (a flutist and sometimes composer himself ) as a gift. Di Biase said Bach’s Gamba Sonata for cello and piano is lovely and mystical.

And Canon, a flowing and expressive piece by Jean Sibelius, Finland’s most renowned composer, is for violin and cello.

Then, time for a little Spanish flavor.

“Piece in the Form of Habanera” was written by French composer Maurice Ravel, with interesting rhythms and in Cuban dance form.

“Both well seasoned and novice listeners will appreciate the superbly crafted ‘Musical Offering’ by Bach and enjoy the manner in which the ensemble of flute, cello, violin and piano is featured,” said Wendy Faughn, associate professor of music at JSU. “All can appreciate the fine craftsmanship in both compositions of Bach and Ravel. Pieces by Philippe Gaubert and Jean Sibelius round out the program to give the listener a sampling of different pairings of the four instruments.

The flute, cello and piano will perform “Trois Aquarelles (Three Watercolors)” by the French composer Gaubert, with the feel and musical picture of an autumn evening.

And different moods are created in the free-spirited “Kokopeli” for flute by Katherine Hoover, which tells the story of a legendary musician and deity of the Hopi Indians.

Di Biase is a graduate student in the JSU music department. She studies cello

privately with Craig Hultgren of the Alabama Symphony in Birmingham. One of the founding members of the JSU College/ Community Orchestra in fall of 1993, she teaches cello students in the Etowah Youth Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras.

Also in the quartet, Anna Abrams graduated from Jacksonville State University in 2009. She studied under Dr. Faughn at JSU, where she received a music scholarship.

She teaches private piano lessons and accompanies other musicians. She enjoys playing in groups within the community.

Abrams is the pianist at First United Methodist Church in Alexandria. She plans on beginning graduate school to study Piano Pedagogy within the year and to one day teach piano at a collegiate level while still

performing.

Diane Chong graduated from Sookmyung University in Korea with a major in violin and a minor in piano. She also played in the Seous Symphony Orchestra in Seoul, Korea. She teaches viola and violin at Gadsden Community School for the Arts and a is member of the Parker Memorial Baptist Church’s orchestra.

A senior at JSU, Patrick Clines is majoring in music with a minor in history. He is second flutist with the Gadsden Symphony Orchestra, principal flute for the JSU Chamber Winds and the JSU Contemporary Ensemble. He plans to pursue a masters of arts in musicology degree after graduation from JSU, and is currently to graduate schools throughout the United States and Canada.

Last chapter in Cash’s ‘American’ series

MALIBU, Calif. — Producer Rick Rubin took up a seat on a sofa on the patio of his expansive Malibu home overlooking the Pacific, emanating both gravity and joy while discussing his extraordinary decade-long relationship with Johnny Cash.

It was the first full day of sun after yet another round of thunderstorms had pounded Southern California, a fitting parting of the clouds on the day Rubin spoke about one of the titans of 20th century music in the final years of his life.

The final entry in their series of studio albums arrived Tuesday, American VI: Ain’t No Grave, yet despite the nod to mortality in the title, an acknowledgment of the closeness of death that runs through most of the album’s 10 songs, Rubin insists that it wasn’t created as Cash’s swan song.

“He had made plans to come to Los Angeles to start recording,” said the 46-year-old producer of Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, Metallica, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tom Petty.

“It was the first trip he had planned in a long time ... He had been on the upswing physically, and was looking forward to getting started on Volumes 7 and 8. That’s what made it such a shock when I got the call that he had passed.”

It’s also one reason it’s taken so long for Rubin to put the finishing touches on what he and Cash had been working on nearly seven years ago.

“I wasn’t in any hurry to let this go,” he said with a little chuckle.

In the months leading up to his death on Sept. 12, 2003, Cash, Rubin and John Carter Cash — Johnny and June Carter’s son — had mapped out both the fifth and sixth volumes of the American albums they’d started with 1994’s American Recordings. That one earned Cash a Grammy for best contemporary folk album; he collected another Grammy for its 1996 successor, Unchained, which was named best country album.

While working on American V and VI, which were recorded essentially simultaneously over several months at the end of 2002 and in 2003 near Cash’s home in Hendersonville, Tenn., each man came armed with lists of potential songs, lists they continuously updated and expanded.

“I feel like this is him talking about what’s next,” Rubin said. “There’s a very otherworldly quality to it. And that’s nothing we could have planned. ... While we were finishing it, once we heard his voice again, we really felt a

presence in the studio, and it helped with making a lot of the decisions.”

Even a song as familiar and frequently recorded as Kris Kristofferson’s “For the Good Times” takes on a different weight knowing the man who sang it is now gone: “Don’t look so sad / I know it’s over / But life goes on / And this old world will keep on turning / Let’s just be glad we had some time to spend together ...”

Ferlin Husky usually gets a lot calls in the spring from friends telling him this has to be the year he’ll be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

“Every year I’ve heard that — for the last 15 or 20 years,” Husky said with a laugh.

This time it’s true.

The Country Music Association on Tuesday announced that Husky and three other genreexpanding country music stars will be new inductees to the Hall of Fame.

Husky joins fellow crossover pioneer Jimmy Dean, producer Billy Sherrill and top-selling singer Don Williams. The men will be inducted into the Hall in Nashville, Tenn., later this year.

It’s been a long wait for Husky, who is 84.

One of the best-selling popular artists regardless of genre in the 1950s and ’60s, Husky figured he just wasn’t country enough for the Country Music Hall of Fame.

“The main thing I’m proud of this is for my family and for the many people who want to see me go in there before I die,” Husky said. “It’s a great honor.”

Husky and Dean — both selected as Veterans Era Artists in a tie under a new selection process this year — took country music to wider audiences by using the relatively new medium of television to earn new fans.

Dean, best known for the spoken narrative hit “Big Bad John,” hosted The Morning Show, an early morning variety show on CBS, was the first guest host for The Tonight Show and had his own variety show on CBS that featured country artists as guests.

He became a headliner at venues like Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl and became the first country star to play on the Las Vegas strip. He also was an actor with parts in television and the movies, including the role of James Bond’s ally Willard Whyte in the 1971 film Diamonds Are Forever.

Husky also achieved pop success before turning to TV and film. He was a variety show regular and among the first country artists to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

He had several hits, including “Wings of a Dove” and “Gone,” and sold millions of records.

“I didn’t say it was country, but it was a country boy doing it,” Husky said.

Williams started his recording career with a folk-pop outfit and moved to Nashville in the early 1970s. He went on to record 17 No. 1 hits in the U.S. and earned a large following in Europe.

Mind” takes on an air of defiance, a straightforward declaration that is nearly the opposite of Jeff Buckley’s fluttery, otherworldly jazzy take.

When Cash sings, “I’ll leave this old world with a satisfied mind,” he means it.

Even more telling, though, is the Cash original “I Corinthians 15:55,” where he makes the Bible verse — “O death, where is thy sting? Oh grave, where is thy victory?” — feel like a taunt.

It’s stunning stuff made all the more impressive by the fact that it was recorded so shortly after his beloved wife June Carter Cash’s death and so shortly before his own.

Ain’t No Grave chronicles the end of Cash’s legendary career, but it’s so lovingly delivered that it sounds like the start of something new.

New Alkaline Trio sugary Alkaline Trio This Addiction

For an album that takes most of its imagery from foil-darkened heroin dens, Alkaline Trio’s This Addiction feels more like a sugar high than an opiate.

The goth-tinted punk band, credited for better or worse as one of emo’s progenitors, long paired sly, cartoonishly bleak lyrics with downright chipper melodies.

Addiction is its clearest distillation of that formula in years, and will remind a lot of prodigal fans about singer Matt Skiba’s song-

writing strengths. Alkaline Trio has never been as evil as they imagined, and their obsidian sheen has sometimes bogged down their tunes. Not so here: “Dead on the Floor” imagines Buddy Holly’s sock-hop rock as a delicious romance-is-murder ballad, and “Eating Me Alive” drags up ’80s-era Cure synths that could run your mascara from 100 yards away.

“Dine, Dine My Darling” is a witty Misfits homage, appropriate for a band built on twominute pop tunes about suicide and vampires.

Newsom’s new album ambitious, palpable Joanna Newsom Have One on Me Joanna Newsom is a hard act to follow. Turn that phrase around in your head for a minute, as you would a tarnished knickknack, or one of Newsom’s own lyrics, assembled from fable and casual conversation and just those kinds of cliches. It has two meanings, and both apply.

In her young career, Newsom has burst free of the traditions that inspire her — visionary California folk-rock, post-Kate Bush femme pop, fairy tales and modernist literature — to assert a voice that seems totally singular, an end in itself.

Her distinctiveness begins with her unusual primary instrument, the pedal harp, and extends to her long and winding song structures, her allusive but hard-to-track lyrics, and a voice that inspires a thousand metaphors (wood sprite, elf, child, chickadee), none quite right.

Newsom’s music can’t be duplicated. It’s also very hard to grasp, despite being pretty and often inviting. Her last album, “Ys,” was a song cycle orchestrated by Van Dyke Parks that laid story upon story like a Maltese falcon, touching on life’s biggest subjects: desire, death, the natural world’s pull on human consciousness.Her new three-disc set goes even further into that subject matter, and is even harder to track.

Yet it’s an easier listen. Apart from its two-hour length, Have One on Me aims to be ... accessible is the wrong word, so let’s say palpable.

Sensual, with the breadth and variety that music offers when you’re dancing to it, or listening in bed, not sitting in a concert hall.

Some songs feature just Newsom and her harp; on others, she’s at the piano.

Grooves bubble up now and then.

The variety here suits the set’s overarching theme of coupling and uncoupling. (At least that’s the one that asserts itself first in a work overflowing with ideas.) Starting with “Easy,” a song about “my man and me,” and concluding with “Does Not Suffice,” in which Newsom packs up her feminine finery and walks away, Have One on Me explores what intimate partnership offers, and what it costs.

Most tracks seem like love songs at first listen. Newsom uses the songwriter’s default mode to explore how traditional love, for women, can be both the beginning and the end of possibility: a way to escape home and be exiled from it; to welcome children or be burdened by fertility; to be entrusted with secrets, or betrayed.

Newsom’s current beau is comic Andy Samberg and her last was the musician Bill Callahan — that gossip is relevant, since several songs here hint at the problems that can afflict a two-career couple.

But as seemingly personal as Newsom’s accounts of hunger, heartache and risk can be, she’s never just writing about some guy.

She goes deep, as deep as any artist working today, into the loud forest of stories where our ideas about love and the self are born.

Her trail of crumbs isn’t always obvious, but you can follow her there.

Cop Out is a clumsy postmodern buddy cop flick that stuffs as many genre references as it can into the ceaseless patter between Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis.

They play our paired police — detectives Paul Hodges and Jimmy Monroe, respectively — and they might as well be in different movies. Willis, a veteran of cop films like the Die Hard films and most recently Surrogates, is our unmistakable straight man. Almost charmingly, he’s actually trying to solve crimes.

Hodges, however, is a parody. Realism is far in the rearview whenever Morgan is on screen and one can’t help wondering how his partner — let alone his wife (Rashida Jones) — can treat a cartoon so much like a human.

Director Kevin Smith gives Morgan,

the former Saturday Night Live cast member and current 30 Rock co-star, copious room to let loose. He’s the kind of comedian who’s naturally funny; bottling him would be foolish.

For better and worse, Cop Out is his film. Morgan rattles off movie quotes (everything from Training Day to The Color Purple), disguises himself in a cell phone costume, wildly vacillates emotionally, uses cute words like “nincompoop” and occasionally spouts comically lucid definitions like a human Wikipedia.

Though handled awkwardly, the plot is simple. Hodges and Monroe, partners for nine years, are Brooklyn detectives who encounter a Mexican drug gang. Following an incident, their badges are revoked for a month by their captain (the good, sometimes typecast Sean Cullen). A valuable baseball card of Monroe’s is stolen and traced back to the gang.

This plot line unbelievably mixes with one involving Monroe’s daughter’s impending wedding. Divorced, his ex-wife (Francine Swift) has found a wealthy, arrogant second husband (Jason Lee) who is offering to pay for

the daughter’s wedding. Played by Michelle Trachtenberg, the daughter is asking Monroe for a $48,000 wedding — making her more a villain than the lethal drug gang.

The detectives’ pursuit ropes in an amateurish burglar (Seann William Scott), who proves a surprisingly good fit with Morgan’s madcap energy.

His schtick here is a mimicking game that, with Morgan, turns into a Bugs Bunny routine — the movie’s best laugh.

A question of action-to-comedy balance hovers over Cop Out. Written

by Robb and Mark Cullen, it originally had Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg attached.

Smith has made dialogue between two guys a staple since his indie breakthrough, Clerks. He’s since made some terrible films (Dogma taking the cake) and Cop Out finds him for the first time directing from a script not his own.

Like Hodges exclaims during a blitz of movie impressions, Cop Out is an homage. Harold Faltermeyer’s synthesizer-heavy score recalls his soundtrack from Beverly Hills Cop, the buddy cop classic that Cop Out falls well short of.

Breck Eisner’s insane-in-the-membrane update of the George A. Romero cult horror movie The Crazies opens with a brief shot of fire, devastation and small-town apocalypse, followed by a title card that takes us back to the same Iowa farm community two days earlier.

We see white-picket fences, clapboard houses and good neighbors, and hear birds warbling and Johnny Cash singing “We’ll Meet Again,” a song whose title hints at the nature of the alarming events about to transpire. When these Middle American folks do meet again, those pitchforks they’re carrying won’t be intended for bales of hay.

Romero sandwiched his 1973 Crazies in between his more celebrated zombie movies, Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, both of which have been remade, too, with varying results.

While The Crazies isn’t a zombie movie per se, it derives much of its horror from the same fear — the enemy lurks both within and without you. There’s a very real chance you might turn into a monster.

Eisner’s remake maintains the dynamic of that unease, while Scott Kosar and Ray Wright’s screenplay gives the audience a rooting interest by whittling down the political subtext and making the movie more of a survival story.

It helps, too, that Eisner’s budget probably exceeds that of all of Romero’s movies combined. Eisner puts the money to good use, delivering a beautifully shot film that contains equal measures of style and gore.

We first sense something might not be right in Ogden Marsh when Rory (Mike Hickman) wanders into the middle of the high school baseball field during a game. He’s carrying a shotgun and wearing a faraway look in his eyes.

The town sheriff (Timothy Olyphant) assumes he’s drunk and tries to talk Rory down. He doesn’t succeed.

After that, locals begin trickling into the office of the beautiful doctor (Radha Mitchell), complaining of fevers and being tired and not feeling “right.” Germs seem to be spreading — and so is the news. Soon, we see Ogden Marsh from satellite, with the words: “Initiate containment protocol.” Uh-oh.

‘Modern Family’ has right formula

Idol’s females work quirkiness, smarts

LOS ANGELES — Song selection.

It’s what the judges love to mention, the first true or false step any American Idol striver makes, before she even opens her well-glossed lips. Sometimes, in truth, it doesn’t matter that much: The singer’s presence, tone, or sheer power shines through, no matter its vehicle.

But on this virgin night of serious Idol competition Tuesday, song selection really did determine the night’s best performances — in ways that were sometimes unexpected, and which further suggest that this season will be a tricky, transitional one for the show and its future stars.

In two hours of song padded with the usual feel-good bio segments and (mercifully few) dull gags from the judges table, the top 12 women ranged from the melismatically obvious to the yodel-ishly surprising, generally aiming to fulfill Simon Cowell’s mantra: Be contemporary. The ones who managed did so with songs that felt personal and daring, even if they’d been borrowed from the most commercially successful band of all time.

That would be the Beatles. Three songbirds opened the Fab Four songbook in the middle of the show, and it worked for all of them, to varying degrees.

Lilly Scott went a little wild on “Fixing a Hole” but made a good impression. Whimsical teen Haeley Vaughn yodeled (!) in the middle of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” — startling for sure, but a nice twist on the Moptops’ original Little Richard whoops. And though the judges didn’t praise her enough, Katelyn Epperly drew out the soul in Paul’s doo-wop flavored “Oh! Darling,” delivering the kind of pleasurably dramatic performance that once would have been an Idol home run. But maybe not this year.

Instead, the artist’s magic touch in this time of Simon’s departure and Ellen’s ascent may have little do do with conventional chops and more to do with ... what? Personality? Style?

Musical taste? Some quality akin to all of those but perhaps better captured by that currently overused marketing term, “relatability.”

Ellen presented her own Idol hiring as a matter of putting a fan in a judge’s chair. In fact, Idol in general seems a lit-

tle shrunken this year, and not in a bad way: The stage somehow seems smaller, and the kids occupying it — Big Mike aside — hardly emanate grandiosity.

No Glambert here! I’m not sure there’s even a Carly Smithson. At this point, the big voices still around are strangely overshadowed by those who have more accessible — let’s call it YouTube-sized — charisma.

There was Crystal Bowersox, the dreadlocked hippie, singing one of Alanis Morissette’s least rocking songs and playing harmonica. There was Didi Benami with a nice, sweet-andsour version of Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am.” Best of all, there was the heretofore barely present Siobhan Magnus, taking a big risk by highlighting her lower register on Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” and offering a moment that, as Ellen wisely said, felt more like entertainment than Idol-style sport.

These ingenues stood out because they dared to be something other than gorgeous. They didn’t necessarily fulfill the Idol bromide of “being themselves,” but they did seem human as they turned inward, showed little vocal tics or let a meaningful lyric take them.

LOS ANGELES — ABC took a major gamble in September when it opted to launch four new half-hour comedies as a two-hour package on Wednesday nights. Networks have had trouble launching even one new comedy over the past decade, and those that survived often got their starts behind an established comedy.

ABC’s bold plan — introducing Hank, The Middle, Modern Family and Cougar Town — has generally worked. Other than Hank, a stinker that died quickly, the other shows have found audiences.

Modern Family is the biggest new comedy of the year and found success without having that lead-in support from an established hit show.

It has averaged about 10 million viewers each week, making it consistently a Top 25 show.

Even some of the cast members are befuddled by the show’s popularity.

Ed O’Neill, who plays family patriarch Jay Pritchett, had success on another quirky family show — Married With Children. Yet he doesn’t know why Modern Family has become so popular so fast.

“I’m really amazed by the show. It’s confusing to me. I’m not used to this sort of comedy.

I’m not sure how it’s working. I just know it is,” O’Neill says during an interview on the set.

The show uses similar storytelling techniques to The Office, where a fake film crew documents the antics of the various twisted limbs on the family tree. The story centers on O’Neill’s character, who married a hot, younger woman (Sofia Vergara) with an offbeat son (Rico Rodriguez) at a time when he should be enjoying life as a grandfather. His children have their own foibles. Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and his partner Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) are firsttime parents of an adopted baby from Vietnam.

Daughter Claire (Julie Bowen) must deal with a host of wife and mom problems, including a husband (Ty Burrell) who thinks he is the hippest dad on the planet.

Sarah Hyland, who plays hormone-charged teen Haley, suggests the show has attracted such a large following because viewers see similarities between characters on the show and their own relatives.

“There’s either that flamboyant uncle or that weird dad or the hot family member who everyone wants to be with but no one can. It’s just a somewhat exaggerated version of everyone’s lives,” Hyland says.

NEW YORK — Claude cross.221 Ruibal believes NBC wants to and will continue as the Olympics network beyond London in 2012, after which U.S. television rights are up for grabs. He essentially bet his company on it.

Ruibal is chairman and CEO of the Universal Sports network, which is televising five hours per day of Olympics material from Vancouver to the 33 million homes where it is being seen in the U.S. The network provides up-to-the-minute updates of Olympics events and background programs on events like figure skating.

Olympic champions Shaun White, Hannah Teter and Evan Lysacek have all stopped by for interviews.

Universal Sports is the former World Championship Sports network, which Ruibal started in 2003. He was a fan of ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” and its variety of competitions from around the globe while growing up, and he noted that many of the sports popular every four years at the Olympics have little television exposure otherwise. He set about acquiring the rights to many of them — ski tours, swimming championships, volleyball, track and field — to give them a TV home.

“I didn’t think there was a champion for it,” Ruibal said. “But I do think there is a champion set of consumers who want to see it.”

In 2008, he entered into a partnership with NBC Universal and investors Inter Media Partners. There was talk the U.S. Olympic Committee was interested in setting up its own network, and Ruibal wanted to block the way competitively.

NBC’s cable properties — USA, MSNBC, CNBC — have all been used as spillover networks for Olympics events in Vancouver. Universal has another purpose and, unlike the other networks, will provide updates on events that NBC otherwise wants to keep quiet until they are shown in prime-time. NBC won’t scoop its own prime-time show but will provide more extensive video of events to Universal than it gives to other news organizations.

NEW YORK — After turmoil that included public squabbling, threats of a lineup change and a rehab stint, Aerosmith is back and ready to rock.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers have announced their “Cocked, Locked and Ready to Rock” European summer tour — with Steven Tyler.

The band made tyler the announcement Thursday. It also posted a video on its Web site in which Tyler, sitting with the rest of the band, jokes: “I just auditioned and I got the gig.”

“We’re coming your way and rocking your world! Look out because here we come,” he says as he looks at guitarist Joe Perry and the group breaks out in laughter.

Aerosmith, which has been one of rock’s enduring bands over the past three decades, has been in limbo since Tyler fell off a stage during an August concert in South Dakota, injuring himself and forcing the band to cancel the rest of their summer tour.

After that, Perry expressed anger that the group had been sidelined and said Tyler needed to get his act together. For his part, Tyler was quoted as saying he was interested in going solo, and soon the band was talking about replacing Tyler with another singer.

In December, Tyler checked in to rehab for a painkiller addiction, a problem he blamed on years of injuries suffered while performing with the band.

In an interview this week, bandmate Joey Kramer said: “Everything right now in Aero-land is very copacetic. ... We will carry on and do what we do best.”

As far as their latest drama, he said: “The one common denominator that we still all have is that we all love to get up on stage and rock out, play music and bring joy to people.”

Think amateur poets on a nightclub stage reciting their own original poetry for an audience of patrons who snap their fingers or raise lit cigarette lighters in a show of approval.

It’s called spoken word, a style of performance poetry that began in New York City in the early ’80s and became popular especially among African-Americans in the early ’90s.

There was a time when finding that type of entertainment would mean a trip to Atlanta or Birmingham. But now it’s available at least twice a month right here in Calhoun County.

Poets have been performing a little over a year now at the American Legion Post 312 on West 10th Street in Anniston and for several months at All Stars Sports Bar and Grill on Snow Street in Oxford. The crowds have grown as the word gets out.

Poet Telesa “Sickwitit” Stanford said she has performed in Birmingham, Atlanta, Huntsville, Montgomery and Columbus, Ga. “This (the Anniston-Oxford area) is, like, the last place to get it,” she said. “People are afraid of new stuff, but it’s catching on once people get a taste of it.”

Stanford said 10 people showed up the first time she performed about seven months ago.

“And four of them were poets,” she said.

But the next show grew to about 30 people, and then that number doubled to 60, and the most recent show at All Stars was a full house (about 110).

In addition, “Tad of Jazz,” a jazz band made up of local musicians, occasionally accompanies the poets. Spoken-word poems usually take three or four minutes, and, for local shows, the poets take turns for four or five rotations, which lasts around two hours. Usually one of the more popular poets is highlighted as the featured poet of the night.

The shows are usually done open mic style, so anyone interested in sharing their poems is welcome to participate. The poets who perform regularly at All Stars and American Legion are gaining a fan base.

Telesa “Sickwitit” Stanford “I have stopped blaming me for your faults, I once was lost but now I’m found.

And I will never ever again allow the hand that I hold to hold me down.”

Stanford, a recently divorced mother of five, said she’s shy and that writing has always been the way she expresses herself. She tried spoken word after seeing a friend perform on stage.

“I tried it the first time and got hooked,” she said.

Stanford, 37, was born in Chicago, but grew up in Hobson City.

“My mom was from Munford and wanted to move back to the South after my dad retired.”

She graduated from Oxford High School in 1990 and earned a degree in nursing at Ayers State in 1993.

She works for Hospice Complete as a volunteer service coordinator.

Her style of spoken-word poetry? Erotic.

“I deal with death and dying all day long,” she said.

“When I come home, I don’t want to write about that.

That’s why I write erotic poetry.”

Erotic might be too mild a word. Her spicier recitals, for mature ears only, will fog the windows and peel the paint off the wall. Her presentation contradicts her claims of being shy. She said it’s her stage personality that allows her to perform.

“When I am on stage, I become a different person, it’s not me,” she said. “Telesa and SickWitIt are two different people. When I look into the crowd, I don’t see one particular person. The crowd becomes a blur, and it’s just me and the microphone.”

Asked what one thing she’d want others to know, Stanford thought for a moment.

“It’s never too late to follow your dreams,” she said.

“If you’re 70 and you want to be a poet, come and get on the mic.”

Venus “Jus Venus” Smith

Shane Anthony “White Chocolate” Davidson “I’ll stay me and be the best I can be.”

Davidson, 29, said he wrote a lot as a kid but began to really focus on the craft at age 18 after watching the movie Boyz In the Hood.

“I had lost a friend, and it kinda hit me. I felt all the emotions in the movie,” he said. “I write about things I’ve been through or seen. I can’t make it up.”

Davidson, who works at On Time Fashions in Oxford and volunteers at Anniston Family Fitness, was born in Kansas, but has lived in Calhoun County since he was 5 when his parents divorced and he moved here with his dad. At age 10, he was unofficially taken in by a black family in the White Plains/Choccolocco area.

He quit school in the 10th grade and got arrested at age 22 on a drug charge.

“I lost everything,” he said. “That’s what let me know (that lifestyle) wasn’t worth it.”

Since that time, he said he works for what he has and hopes to publish a book of his poems. He uses his story to encourage area youth to stay out of trouble, even accepting invitations to perform his poetry at Anniston High School.

He said his spoken word style is a reflection of his life.

“Genuine,” he said. “I didn’t get it from a movie, and I’m not trying to be something I’m not.”

Davidson’s stage name is as straightforward as his delivery.

“It comes from a white guy being around blacks,” he said.

It originated while he was playing basketball at Jacksonville city courts and people were asking who he was.

“A Jax State football player said ‘That’s my boy White Chocolate,’” he said, “and that pretty much got it to stick.”

“I’m Venus. Ms. V, if you please. Nothing superficial or artificial from my head down to my feet.”

Smith, 30, said she started performing spoken word about three months ago after listening to other poets at American Legion.

“Everyone was so welcoming and receptive,” she said. “I finally got up and performed.”

A New Jersey native, Smith said she was an Army brat who moved to Anniston in 1994 when her dad got stationed at Fort McClellan.

She graduated from Anniston High in 1997.

The mother of two, Smith said she writes more about love than

anything else.

Her inspirations are “my children, past relationships, ongoing relationships, the type of relationship I’d like to have …”

She said she’s not looking to win fans when she performs.

“That’s not my goal,” she said. “But to know that someone accepts it and can take something from it, that means a lot.”

Smith said she started “scratching stuff down” in high school and even had two poems published in “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.”

Her stage name was accidental. She was about to take the stage for a performance, and the emcee asked how she wanted to be introduced.

“I said ‘just Venus,’” she said. “I was telling him to just say Venus, but he introduced me as ‘Jus Venus.’”

She said the name fits her performance because “that’s exactly who I’m being is just Venus.”

Edmondson, 36, said he got into spoken word while watching “Love Jones” with his wife, who sort of challenged him to give it a try.

“I’ve always been a writer, but never of poetry,” he said. “Editorials, meditations, essays … I’ve always written.”

He said his current stage name, Gee, comes from his first name but that he’s still in search of a true stage name — one that fits his style of poetry.

“I like Spoken Truth,” he said, “or something with Truth in the name.”

He said his style has been described as revolutionary, uplifting, promoting Africa.

“It has a harder edge,” he said, “a political edge.”

Edmondson, 36, grew up in Talladega, graduated from Anniston High in 1991, and lives in Jacksonville where he’s a full-time history major at Jacksonville State University. He said he’s always been a writer, but started performing spoken word a little over a year.

“Spoken word is a soulful expression,” he said. “It’s about whatever you’re feeling and whatever you’re expressing.”

Edmondson said he’s often asked about poets being compensated for their performances.

“Most people think we should get paid,” he said, “and plenty do. But most of us would do it for free.”
