Their plots — a manhunt sparked by a drug deal gone bad — and their main characters — a sympathetic lawbreaker, a conflicted lawman and a disturbed killer — invite comparison. Soon, though, Waite’s own story and his smooth prose take over so completely that all that matters is what happens next.

Art banners adorn FUMC Do all angels have names? What colors do these heavenly messengers wear? And does everyone have their own special angel? At First United Methodist Church in Anniston, the answers may vary, but the angels on high mentioned in Hervey the Bible come Folsom into sharper and Artists in Action closer focus for those worshiping in the sanctuary. The angels, depicted on needlework banners, have become so familiar since 2003 that each church member may look at certain ones as their own personal angel. And in the minds of some, they may have names. Everyone seems to relate to them, church member LaNelle Phillips said, each Christmas when the banners are displayed in all their colorful glory. To the first-time visitor, their silent message comes across in a powerful way. “People are in awe of them,” said Kathy Murphy, director of music at FUMC. “The angels just help us approach the true meaning of Christmas each year.” No one can help but see the angel banners. They are 7 feet tall and 4 feet wide and hang 17 feet from the floor. These holy beings are robed in bright liturgical colors — blue, purple and red and green for Christmas. Sturdy brown shoes cover their feet and help speed them on their way to important destinations. There is a feeling of energy with most of them; the one in an orange gown is meditating. Constructed from a variety of fabrics on a background of bengaline fabric (a material with a special weave), these banners were the first set to be completed by The Stitchers, a group of members of the church experienced in needlework. They are inspiring not only because they mark a time of hope and expectation; they are recognizable Christian symbols and are displayed on request for weddings and other special occasions. They were the first set to be completed in a series of banners of

In the Bible, Colossians 3:23 in the King James version, states: “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord …” The Stitchers, led by Phillips, have obeyed this command with the vigorous work of their fingers. “Some of us had never attempted work of this volume, but we learned from each other and bonded,” she said. The entire banner project was completed in three years. In all of the 64 pieces, the fabrics were carefully selected, Phillips explained. About 252 yards of sequins were ordered for the angel pieces and were sewn around the edges of the arched frames that surround these female angels. “The black sequins made all the difference in the world in adding depth to the frames,” Phillips added. No glue was used for the project. Each banner was hand–stitched, piece by piece with needle and thread. The artistry of each piece that helps give a three-dimensional effect was achieved by pleating and folding the fabric, especially in the angel’s wings, which contain great detailed work. The project got its start after FUMC member Dan Pitts saw ban-

ners displayed at Trinity United Methodist Church in Birmingham. Bobby Green, the FUMC pastor in 2003, endorsed the undertaking, and artist and teacher Janet Hinton, a native of Attala, was commissioned to design the banners. The Stitchers started on the “I Am” banners five years ago. They are the newest set, and are displayed now in the place of the angels to represent the Lenten season. Made of cotton, they represent the life of Christ and the preparation for his ministry. The color purple is used in these pieces to symbolize the penitence and royalty of Christ. Other symbols are hung along with these including the Crown of Thorns, The Cock and The Purse of Judas. Did The Stitchers require lessons or special training to reach their goal? The visitor asks this of Phillips in the sanctuary as the “I Am” cloths are raised to their brackets. “No, our mothers taught us,” Phillips answered. “But it took dedication, in capital letters, we worked night and day. Our families had hot dogs instead of dinner plenty of nights.” Dedication well describes their activity since The Stitchers totaled 4,902 hours for their mission. Now, each Sunday they can look at the decorated sanctuary with pride. The Stitchers are Phillips, Jean Woodall, Mary Williams, Jaudon Williams, Karen Loftin, Erin Snowden, Becky Brown, the late Betsy Babb and Bill Phillips, builder.

Parker Memorial Concerts Song can enhance worship services, too. “Jane & Friends” led by Jane Burnham, will perform a vocal concert Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. and Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. in the Christian Life Center at Parker Memorial Baptist Church. The groups include HeartNotes and Jack Paris and Charlotte Paris. Tickets are $10 each and proceeds will go to the church’s “Restoring God’s House” renovation project. A special treat awaits the audience of the Historic Ritz Theater in Talladega on Saturday night. The Blind Boys of Alabama is performing a 60-minute show, starting at 7 p.m. For seven decades members of the group have touched people all around the world with their gift of song. The band started in 1939 at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind, where Jimmy Carter, Clarence Fountain, Johnny Fields, George Scott, Ollice Thomas, JT Hutton and Vel Bozman got together and began playing their music, performing at schools and churches in the Talladega area. Jimmy Carter, the only remaining founding member of the band, was only 7 years old at the time. They spent the next 40 years almost exclusively working the black gospel circuit, continuing to play in churches, auditoriums and even stadiums all across the country. Their career reached a turning point in 1983, when the Blind Boys performed in the Obie Award-winning musical The Gospel at Colonus.

Between 2002 and 2005 the group won a Grammy Award each year, with another one in 2009 as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award in the same year. Their recorded music, reaching all the way back to 1948 with their hit “I Can See Everybody’s Mother But Mine,” the Blind Boys of Alabama influenced a multitude of gospel, R&B and rock artists. In the 1950s, they had their chance to cross over to more popular music, but decided to stay true to their calling and continued to show their faith through their music. That faith that also helped them accept their fate: Walking through life without being able to see — or read sheet music. “One way we teach students to play music is that they have to learn how to read the music in Braille first, memorize it, before they can begin to play the music. You use both hands to read Braille so you can’t read the music and play it at the same time,” explained Lynn Hanner, director of Institutional Advancement at the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind in Talladega. Band member Bishop Billy Bowers is also a graduate from the AIDB, just like lead vocalist Jimmy Carter.

Next to Bowers and Carter, Ben Moore, Eric “Ricky” McKinnie, Joey Williams, Peter Levin and Josh Williams will wow the audience in Talladega this Saturday, where their career began. “They are excited to be back in Alabama. They always love to play there,” said Sue Schrader, publicist for the group, which is currently touring in Europe as well as the United States. The latest CD of these members of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame was Duets, a special anthology featuring collaborations with artists like Ben Harper, Randy Travis and Bonnie Raitt, released in March 2010. A new CD, co-produced by Jimmy Johnsons, is coming out this May. “They did not have a public performance in this area in a long time, since they tour the world and are very busy. DiDonato dazzles with gender-bending CD By Mike Silverman Associated Press

Joyce DiDonato, Diva, Divo (Virgin Classics) One of today’s most accomplished singers, American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, has it all: a warm, flexible voice that can be pert and spiky one moment and meltingly sweet the next. She has amazing facility in the rapid runs and turns of coloratura singing, a terrific trill, and the interpretive insight to breathe life into a wide range of characters and styles. All of her talents are on vivid display in her new CD, titled Diva, Divo to reflect that she is often cast in what are known as “trousers” roles — male characters whose music has been composed for the female voice. The generous selection of arias totaling more than 80 minutes matches male and female characters from operas on similar themes by diverse composers. Thus we get to hear DiDonato as Cinderella in Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” from 1817, and also as Prince Charming in Massenet’s “Cendrillon” from 1899. Her ability to vary her sound to suit the mood is

remarkable. As the love-struck adolescent Siebel in Gounod’s “Faust” she sounds bright and impetuous. As the abandoned Marguerite from Berlioz’s opera on the same subject, “Le Damnation de Faust,” her tone takes on a darker, melancholy coloring. Hard to believe that early in her career, back in 1997, DiDonato lost a singing competition because she was told, “the judges feel you have nothing to offer as an artist.” The one real rarity in this collection is an aria from Massenet’s all-but-forgotten opera “Ariane.” It is followed by the final and most exciting excerpt of all — DiDonato as the Composer in the prologue to Richard Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos,” a role she will sing at the Metropolitan Opera later this season. DiDonato sets a whimsical tone for the CD in an accompanying article in which she writes of how much “sheer fun” she has playing such different characters “So let’s play, shall we?” she invites us — and only the grumpiest listener would refuse to take her up on the offer. CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: “Voi che sapete,” Cherubino’s second-act aria from Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro,” is the most familiar piece on the CD. DiDonato’s lustrous rendition is the best since Frederica von Stade was in her prime.

Thompson has written 11 pop jewels that sparkle thanks to fetching melodies, inventive arrange-

ments and his versatile vocals. Thompson sings mostly about the resilience and persistence required in the pursuit of love, and he chronicles a series of setbacks with wit while exploring a variety of musical settings. They include the baroque ballad “Home,” the Roy Orbison-style drama “Take Me Back Again,” a couple of catchy rockers and “Tell Me What You Want,” a twangy duet with Jenni Muldaur. There are cameo contributions

from the world’s greatest guitarist, Thompson’s dad, Richard, and much of the material benefits from cinematic string arrangements by producer David Kahne. Love’s not always pretty, but these songs are. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: On the beautiful breakup ballad “Take Care of Yourself,” Kahne’s strings sound swell when they swell. And Thompson intensifies the melancholy mood with an octave leap to sing the final verse. Don’t try it at home.

A heartfelt thank-you from 16-yearold singer Justin Bieber to his millions of fans, and an equally sincere plea for them not to forget him when the next doe-eyed cutie-pie rolls around, the concert film Justin Bieber: Never Say Never manages the neat trick of making a mass-marketed pop act seem like the kid next door. No matter how far away he looks on that stage, Bieber belongs to you, and you and you. Though it’s essentially one long advertisement, Never Say Never doesn’t pretend to be anything else. Directed by Jon M. Chu (the Step Up dance-flick franchise), the movie draws a rough narrative arc by following Bieber on his 2010 tour leading up to a sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden. There is some

ginned-up drama — will Justin’s vocal cords recover in time for the Garden? OMG! — but mostly it’s a fans’ wish list of backstage banter, adorable baby photos and the occasional glimpse of Bieber’s bare torso. Despite itself, the film ends up providing a peek into the youth-entertainment machine. Scott “Scooter” Braun, who discovered Bieber via a homemade YouTube video, is justifiably proud of encouraging Bieber’s Internet-marketing potential (the singer now has 6.9 million followers on Twitter), while the music impresario Antonio “L.A.” Reid admits without a trace of mockery that he signed Bieber thinking, “Wow, it’s the Macaulay Culkin of music.” It’s hard to say which man is the greater visionary. Of all the talking heads in the film, Bieber talks the least. Mostly he sings fan favorites like “Baby,” “U Smile” and the title song, occasionally joined by guest stars like Usher, Jaden Smith, Miley Cyrus and Sean Kingston. But this, too, may be a ploy. It’s a way to keep Bieber close, but not too close, to his fans.

Best Actress Nominees: Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right; Nicole Kidman, Rabbit Hole; Jennifer Lawrence, Winter’s Bone; Natalie Portman, Black Swan; Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine Who will win: This one couldn’t be more cliché. It’s between the seasoned veteran Bening and the up-and-coming Portman. Honestly, it could be either, especially sense Bening deserves one right now and voters might be swayed by her resume more than her most recent performance. However, I’m going to go with Portman because Black Swan has to get some award and this one will be the easiest for the Academy to swallow. I just hope she doesn’t make another

terrible joke and laugh awkwardly at it again.

“Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene. From ancient grudge break to new mutiny ...” And at about this point the gnome reciting the prologue to Romeo and Juliet is yanked off stage by a big Bugs Bunny hook. For this is no epic tale of woe, this romance of Juliet and her Gnomeo. Even if “the story you are about to see has been told before. A lot.” You’ve never seen it told like this. Gnomeo & Juliet is a daft and generally deft British animated retelling of the star-crossed romance set in adjacent English backyard gardens and set to the music of Elton John (he and his Rocket Films produced it). And if it’s not an

unerringly faithful adaptation of Shakespeare’s play, it still manages enough wit and charm to come off. Lady Bluebury (the voice of Maggie Smith) keeps her blue gnomes on her side of the garden fence. But Gnomeo (James McAvoy) would rather be racing lawnmowers and chasing girls. Girl gnomes. The blue gnomes have long hated the red gnomes. Lord Redbrick (the voice of Michael Caine) has his daughter, Juliet (Emily Blunt) up on a pedestal — literally — and sputters malapropisms any time she fancies coming down to hang with the lads. The hotheaded Tybalt (Jason Statham, perfect) is the one who stirs things up the most. He cheats in the lawnmower races and treats everything as a blood sport. Except there is no blood. When gnomes die, they’re shattered. Literally. Then Gnomeo spies fair Juliet, and you adults know the rest. Gnomeo is smitten, and Juliet? “Because I’m Red, I’m feelin’ blue.” Other voices include Ozzy Osbourne, Julie Walters and Hulk Hogan. In this

version of the romance, a goofy lovesick plastic flamingo (Jim Cummings) is the friar, that one person sympathetic to star-crossed lovers. The funny sidekicks aren’t funny enough, save for the porcelain frog, Nannette (Ashley Jensen), who fills the role of Juliet’s nurse. There is no Mercutio. But there is a Benvolio. Gnomeo’s cousin is named “Bennie,” as in “Bennie and the Jets.” Kids will get a kick out of the gnomefu fighting and lawnmower racing and such. And adults will grin at the bulldog, chased out of the yard with “Out! OUT damned Spot!” Patrick Stewart voices a certain famous playwright as a statue in a nearby park, a moving company is named Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Director and co-writer Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2) finds a few jokes and a few moments of heart, just enough to lift Gnomeo above most recent animated B-movies. But it’s a pity he didn’t err on the side of Shakespeare and not of Shrek. The pathos and wit of the Bard bests the sight-gags and one-liners of the Big Green Ogre every time.

The mystery of the disappearance of Rome’s IX Legion Hispana inspires yet another moderately rousing action picture in The Eagle, a film based on Rosemary Sutcliff’s popular 1950s novel about “The Eagle of the Ninth.” Eagle-eyed period-piece fans will recall that last fall another movie, Centurion, drew inspiration from the same piece of history. That film, essentially a prolonged chase from B-movie vet Neill Marshall (The Descent), had a breathless momentum that The Eagle lacks. But Eagle director Kevin Macdonald (State of Play, The Last King of Scotland) manages to deliver a striking, nicely detailed, visceral thriller built on a corny, oldfashioned script. Channing Tatum plays Marcus Aquila, a young soldier with a new command on a fort on Roman Britannia’s frontier. He’s the sort of chiseled, charmed warrior who doesn’t need his helmet half the time, who hears what others don’t and senses the Big Attack when the veterans of the outpost think “the boy” is just skittish. Marcus has reason to be on edge. He’s fighting for the honor he believes his father lost 20 years before. That’s when the Ninth Legion marched north and into oblivion. They lost their unit standard, the eagle, in the process. Marcus longs to redeem the family name and retrieve the eagle from the “tainted legion.” Tatum’s rock-solid build has always suggested “soldier,” even when he was playing a dancer in Step Up. But he’s not a commanding presence, especially playing a commander. Tatum handles the brawls beautifully and clicks with most of his co-stars, especially Bell. Their male bonding gives this World Without Women a hint of Hemingway’s homo-eroticism, a touch that may earn titters from lesssophisticated filmgoers. Outside of Gladiator (clearly a big influence on this film), these movies don’t seem to go over on this continent the way they do in Europe. That’s the real mystery here. Combat that’s up close and personal, tactics torn from the pages of history and messages of honor, freedom, survival and comradeship — it shouldn’t matter that the warriors wear skirts.

All concerned may have been going for an impromptu, laid-back feel, but what we get is lazy moviemaking: unstructured, clumsy, lacking in forward momentum or even tension within individual scenes. Nothing about Just Go With It works. The kids are meant to be cute and precocious but come off as merely obnoxious. Ditto for Swardson’s irritating sibling. And what the heck is Nicole Kidman doing here playing Katherine’s icky college nemesis? (The academy won’t retroactively take back an Oscar, will it?) Poop and crotch jokes (even some breast-surgery-gone-bad sight gags) are scattered randomly throughout. It’s as if Sandler realized that none of this was working and in desperation fell back into his old habits. The film’s official running time is 116 minutes. But take it from one who’s been there: This movie goes on forever.
