don’t know about you, but I am blowing January a great big kiss good-bye! I know it’s wintertime and all, but we’ve had more than our share of one big cold soggy mess. Our mini “snow blizzard” in mid-month reminded me of what happened 20 years ago, come March. Do I even have to remind you of the four foot drifts, the whirling purple cloud that hit us on a Friday night and left us with a mess that didn’t go away for over a week? This month, writer Kenny Farmer visits with fishing expert Reed Montgomery, who knows Logan Martin fishing like many wish they did. They focus on “cold weather fishing,” and you can count on Reed to deliver the best information there is for those hearty souls who still take to the water when the temperatures drop. Then, we’ll find out about Riverside’s newest eating establishment, El Mariachi, where the fare is south of the border and oh, so tasty. Owner Vanessa Cortes Sanchez said there are 80 traditional Mexican items on the menu and we know you’ll want to experience this culinary expertise for yourself. We’ll find out what Dave Bise has in mind for the new arts organization, the Southern Cultural Arts Foundation, for the Pell City area, and about his own artistic pursuits as well. Bise works in pencil, doing detailed drawings that incorporate the whimsical and realistic in an impressive manner. Our old paddler took off with some local residents to the Mulberry Fork River where they used the talents they hone practicing on Logan Martin to take on the whitewater fun the Mulberry offers. And, in line with Valentine’s Day, we visit lake area shopping destinations with some very distinctive things to offer to make your sweetheart’s special day even more special. These local merchants work hard to find those “one of a kind” gifts that have a very personal touch. t was a pleasant surprise when I received an e-mail from a paddling buddy, Steve Morris, about a small group wanting to paddle the Mulberry Fork of the Black Warrior River in Alabama. It was perfect timing. Recent rains had filled local rivers, providing plenty of whitewater action. I told Steve, who lives in the Nashville area, to come on down, and that a group from the Birmingham Canoe Club 6

planned to paddle the upper or lower, or both sections of the Mulberry Fork Saturday. He and his group were welcome to join us. I first met Steve on the Tuckaseegee River in North Carolina. He led a group of Tennessee Scenic River Association members down the Tuckaseegee River that day. The Tuckaseegee is a Class 1-2 river, where part of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fugitiveâ&#x20AC;? motion picture featuring Harrison Ford was

filmed. I’ve also paddled the Nantahala River in North Carolina and the Pigeon River in Northwest Tennessee with Steve. He and another friend, Andrew Smith, led me down the Pigeon River for the first time. I became instant friends with both men. We arranged to have Steve and another of his friends to meet us at the put-in, which is at the Garden City Park in Blount County. He was already there, when Larry Davis of Pell City and I arrived. I have paddled quite a bit with Larry, who lives right down the road from me. We carpooled that morning. Larry recently completed his most challenging kayaking trip down the Class III Ocoee River in Tennessee last summer.

Like many whitewater kayakers, Larry is an adrenaline junkie, but he really enjoys the challenges whitewater paddling offers. “No matter how many times I run a river, I always have a blast,” Larry said. “I constantly try new lines or moves to make each time more difficult and different.” Larry has paddled rivers in Alabama, Tennessee and North Carolina, since he started kayaking during the spring of 2010. “I love the feeling you get when you run the perfect line, glide into that eddy at its highest point, surf the wave, but most of all, flipping over and being able to roll back up without swimming is awesome,” Larry said. To say it was a “cold morning” that day might be an understatement. I have paddled in colder weather, but the temperature was hovering around 28 degrees. When it’s this cold, you won’t see many folks, if any, on Logan Martin Lake, so I figured I would have a lot more company on the Mulberry Fork. I was right. There were about 11 boaters, including me, braving the cold temperatures for a whitewater challenge. “Whose idea was this?” Arlene Schnorbus of Talladega said at the put-in along the river. I would hear that comment a few more times that morning, but nobody confessed to organizing the trip. It just happened. Our group decided to run the Lower Mulberry, and not the Upper Mulberry section, because the water level appeared lower than we had initially thought. It was good seeing Arlene. I haven’t seen her or her husband Joseph probably since last summer. Her husband Joseph is an optometrist in Talladega. Arlene is a project analyst for Jack Henry & Associates. have known and paddled with each other for years. They actually met through the Birmingham Canoe Club. Both Joseph and Arlene are certified instructors for Open Boat Canoe and Swift Water Safety Instruction. They both canoe and kayak, but are primarily open boaters, canoeists. Arlene has been on many challenging rivers, including the Ocoee and Chattooga. “Chattooga is my favorite of all rivers,” she said. The Mulberry Fork is sort of the “local” whitewater Class 2 run with a couple of rapids approaching Class 3, Hawaii 5-0 and Lunch Stop, depending on the water level. “The Mulberry is an awesome river and can meet most paddlers’ needs,” Arlene said. “I use the river as a training river every time I have the opportunity to paddle on it. It is the paddler’s choice as to whether they play or just run the river. Most of the rapids have an easy route down or you can make them very technical. I would much prefer to practice on the Mulberry than on the Ocoee.” Andy Lee of Odenville was probably the most experienced paddler in our group, with 40-plus-years experience. He has paddled on and off throughout the 8

years. “My father was a Sea Scout in England,” Andy said. “He bought a kayak when I was a teenager, and I soon got interested in whitewater.” He has paddled many difficult rivers, including the challenging Class 4-5 Little River Canyon in North Alabama. His favorite rivers to paddle are the Class 4-5 Upper Yough in Maryland and the Class 4-5 South Sauty Creek near Scottsboro. “The Mulberry is a great river to teach and learn on,” Andy said. “There are plenty of places to practice eddy turns, surfing and other skills that you can use on harder rivers. A paddler can learn a lot about the basics without worrying about the consequences of a harder river.” The Mulberry Fork is one of the shorter whitewater runs in the area, and a favorite among many local whitewater kayakers and canoeists. I know Steve enjoyed his first trip down the Mulberry, and I hope he comes back to run some other whitewater runs with us. So as the weather hopefully starts to warm, I am ready to venture back onto calmer waters, so until then, have a safe and wonderful time on Logan Martin Lake.

Professional angler Reed Montgomery explains what techniques he uses, where on Logan Martin Lake to fish and what to look out for when fishing in cold weather. Montgomery says that when fishing in cold weather, that “slow” is the key. 16

which is currently harder to find on Logan Martin, due to the lower water levels in the winter months. Montgomery adds that “cold, muddy conditions” are the “worst wintertime conditions an angler can face.” He says that anglers should look for the clearest water conditions as well as for the warmest water. However, he says that he fishes Logan Martin Lake year-round, and that he normally fishes the same spots in cold weather as he does in the spring, summer and fall. Another issue facing cold weather 18

anglers is safety. Temperature, precipitation and visibility can cause serious hazards for those fishing from a boat. Montgomery says that anyone fishing in low temperatures should be prepared. “Always bring a spare change of clothes and shoes, for when you get wet,” he said. “Dress warm and overdress. You can always shed some clothes if you get too warm.” When a cold rain is in the forecast, Montgomery says that, in addition to a change of clothes and shoes, that one should also pack items such as a coat, a

rain suit, rubber boots, goggles, gloves, and a toboggan. He says life jackets should be buttoned up tight. “Hypothermia can occur if it’s real cold or if you fall in the water,” he said. If the rain is accompanied by lightning, Montgomery says to get off the water immediately, or to take cover if getting on dry land is not an immediate option. “Never take the chance of lightning hitting you,” he said. Montgomery discourages anyone from operating a boat in limited visibility, especially in a thick fog. “Never use a GPS to navigate your boat in the fog,” he said. “It will not show another boat coming at you.” Montgomery also says to use caution when navigating out of the river channels or creek channels as low water conditions bring underwater, boat-damaging obstacles, such as stumps and rocks, closer to the water’s surface. These obstacles can be dangerous, not only in the winter, but in the early spring as well. Montgomery says to be observant of these possible risks through April, when water levels begin to increase. While there are a few more precautions to consider when getting out on the lake in cold weather, Montgomery says that it is almost never to cold to fish Logan Martin Lake. One of the few scenarios that would keep Montgomery from fishing in cold weather would be the icing over of the ramps used to load and unload his boat. “I have caught bass in low 40 degree water temperatures with daytime highs of 25 degrees!” Montgomery says there are some advantages to fishing in cold weather, despite the low temperatures. He says that there is no need to get out on the water early because, in the winter, big bass usually bite from mid-morning to late evening. You can make them without all the calories and guilt and fat and without very much trouble at all. Would you believe a chocolate muffin with just 128 calories and one milligram of fat?

How about a lemon poppy seed muffin with 160 calories and fat calories of 27? It can be done, and they’re just as tasty, I promise, as the “real deal.” Yes, I think I’m your food health guru, and I apologizesomewhat. I just think if there are ways to cut back on that “bad stuff ” that we should. So, have your muffins and have them without all the things we know we shouldn’t!

I’m bringing recipes for a fantastic blackberry spice muffin as well, along with an outstanding 95 calorie ginger carrot muffin. So, let’s get cooking and enjoy! Low Fat Chocolate Muffins What you need: One and a half cups all purpose flour Three-fourths cups sugar (How about using Splenda? I did!) One fourth cup baking cocoa Two teaspoons baking powder

One and a half cups fresh or frozen cranberries One-half teaspoon Stevia

What you do: Mix dry ingredients and set aside. Mix milk and bran and set aside and let soak for five minutes. Meanwhile, mix oil, apple sauce. Add the berries, molasses, vanilla and egg whites together. Pour this into the milk and bran mixture and stir. Add wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix only to moisten. Cook for approximately 20 minutes at 350. Makes 24 muffins. Calories: 121, 19 carbs

One teaspoon baking soda Two-thirds cup fat-free vanilla yogurt

Ninety-five calories carrot ginger muffins What you need:

Two-thirds cup fat free milk

One cup whole wheat flour

One-half teaspoon vanilla extract

One and a half teaspoons baking powder

Confectioner’s sugar, optional, to decorate

One egg, beaten

One half teaspoon salt

One-third cup brown sugar

What you do: In a large bowl, combine the first six ingredients. Stir in the yogurt, milk and vanilla until moistened. Coat muffin cups with cooking spray and fill two-thirds full. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for five minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack and sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar is desired. Yield: One dozen, Note: Since these were pretty “low cal,” I added a few chocolate chips for interest! And oh yeah, some walnuts, too! Calories in one muffin: 128 (without the added chips and nuts), 29 grams carbs. Cranberry Blueberry Bran Muffins What you need: Two cups flour One-third cup unsweetened apple sauce One-third cup vegetable oil Three egg whites Two tablespoons baking powder Two tablespoons baking soda

What you do: Preheat oven to 350. Cut butter into soft cubes and soften. In a large bowl, combine flour and baking powder with the butter, using a pastry cutter or fingers to cut down the butter into .fine pieces mixed with the flour. Add sugars, ginger, carrot. Milk, beaten egg, vanilla and spices to the mixture and mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon or spatula. Add raisins or nuts if using them. Bake for 25 minutes and let cool. 18.5 grams carbs each.

Here’s a group of chocolate muffins bearing just 90 calories each! (The added chocolate chips and walnuts aren’t included in the calories count!) Two tablespoons poppy seeds Two teaspoons baking powder One teaspoon baking soda One-fourth teaspoon salt One egg One cup fat free vanilla yogurt One-fourth cup canola oil One teaspoon lemon extract One-third cup lemon juice

What you do: Preheat oven to 400. Whisk dry ingredients in a large bowl. In a medium bowl, mix egg, yogurt, oil, lemon zest, lemon juice and extract. Make a “well” in the center of the dry ingredients and fold in wet ingredients just until moist. Spoon into a lined 12 cup muffin pan (or one sprayed with cooking spray). Bake 15 to 18 minutes, until lightly browned. I chose to make these “mini muffins,” and just adjusted the cooking time to about 10 to 12 minutes-just keep a watch on them if you do this. Calories (full sized muffins): 161, three grams of fat, 29 grams carbs. 22

hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the food and fellowship, outstanding table decorations and a visit from former Alabama first lady Patsy Riley, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a whole lot more to the Lakeside Hospice/Christian Love Pantry Tablescapes event Feb. 23. The fundraiser is now in its fourth year, and the approximately $10,000 it raises for the two non-profit organizations is critical to the services the organizations provide.

The place is First United Methodist Church in Pell City and the time is from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Participation is available on several levels, from buying a single ticket for $25 to hosting and decorating a table for eight yourself. Thos who host tables can supply their own guests, or organizers will seat individual guests at various tables for the hosts, said Christine Smith with Lakeside Hospice. The church will be open starting at 6 p.m. the night before for table hosts to decorate. There will be door prizes, awards made to the best decorate tables and also auction items. Funds generated from the event are divided evenly between Lakeside Hospice and The Christian Love Pantry.

rom the outside, it could be your average lake house, with brick red-colored siding, a nice patio overlooking the water and landscaping that, like everything on the lake, comes to life during the summer months. It’s when you step inside, though, that Mark and Melissa Brooks’ newly redesigned home becomes anything but the usual, much like the couple who live there. Mark, a Birmingham native and retired captain in the U.S. Navy, and Melissa, a native of Melbourne, Australia, settled on Logan Martin just over a year ago after Mark retired with 30 years of military service. His parents, Dennis and Lorrie Brooks, 26

also retired to the lake 21 years prior when his father retired as a Navy admiral. Mark and Melissa had always enjoyed visiting Pell City, so they decided to follow suit. Much of their first year of retirement was spent on a complete interior remodel of their 1974-built, 1,200-square-foot abode. But the overhaul wasn’t necessarily intentional, Mark said. “We knew the kitchen needed to be redone, the bathroom and hallway were pretty average and all the flooring was kind of a hodgepodge, so it was going to be just those three things, and then it turned into down to the studs,” he said. “We did new wiring and plumbing, then the walls needed to be dry

walled because they were an old paneling, and that was just by necessity.” So why buy a house in need of a revamp instead of building a new one? Melissa needed no words to explain their decision, gesturing toward a dining and sitting room lined with floor-to-ceiling windows that give a near panoramic view of the lake. “We bought the view, not the house,” she said. “That was a major selling point. We didn’t want a show house. We wanted an environmentally friendly, modern, sleek living environment on the inside, but a very deceptive outside.” And that’s exactly what they got. The redesign maximizes the usefulness of every room in the two-bedroom, two-bath house. Throw in a monochromatic scheme, some colorful artwork and a few stand-out pieces and you’ve got a lake house that’s as stylish as it is sensible. “We use every square inch of the house every day,” Melissa said. “There’s not a room that we don’t go into, and that was important to us. We wanted it to be manageable, easy to maintain and easy to live in. It’s very open, but still private.”

The heart of the home is an open kitchen and living space, crafted around off-white walls and hardwood floors that mix new and river pine for a slightly aged look. Bold granite countertops blending white, gray and black steal the show in the kitchen, which is completed with stainless steel appliances and white cabinets. The space has come a long way from what it once was. Before the remodel, a line of cabinets separated the kitchen from the living room, and a door in the kitchen looked straight into the hallway bathroom, but now Mark said they have an open space perfect for cooking and entertaining, which was important because Melissa loves to cook. The couple is actually in the process of opening a restaurant in Pell City, The Garry House Café, to open this month where Melissa will serve as chef! The kitchen and bathroom remodels were made easier by Melissa’s penchant for online shopping, Mark said. While he was still on active duty at their previous home in Texas, Melissa would travel to Pell City about once a month to guide the contractors. “All of the fixtures and appliances, Mel just got online and literally ordered everything, down to the bath tile,” Mark said. “We kept everything in the garage, and when the contractors were ready to install it, it was right there.” Melissa even ordered the dazzling glass-bulb chandelier that hangs over their kitchen table online. The fixture, which has star-shaped bulbs inside its round fittings, is undoubtedly the star of the room, and another conversation piece, a Scandinavian wash bucket (which is most often used as a “beer trough” during gatherings), adds another spark of interest. “I like to have one or two really beautiful things, and the rest just minimal,” Melissa said of her design preferences. “Like the chandelier, I see that as artwork, not a light fitting. We’ve got sconces in another room made of Murano glass, and I just loved the fluid movement of them. They reminded me of the lake. I like unsymmetrical, slightly unusual, handcrafted items of glass.” The minimal but sleek look continues in the living room, where dark brown couches and wooden shelving offset the lighter wall colors and delicate, live flowers add a soft touch. Everything in the house, including a guest bedroom with doors that open to look out at those full-length windows, is designed to point toward the wonderful view of the lake. The windows line a room adjoining the living room that has extra seating as well as a dining table. The space has doors on each end, one that leads to an outdoor patio and down to the dock, and another that leads to a screened porch and Mark’s aviation-themed office, which he jokingly calls his “I Love Me” room. 28

“That’s what we call it in the Navy, and other services may do the same,” Mark said with a laugh. Across the walls of the office, which was built where part of the garage used to be, is picture after picture of moments significant to Mark’s career. Among the memorabilia is a photo of Mark shaking hands with former President Ronald Reagan at his graduation from the military academy in the 1970s, another shows Mark and his father before a Naval flight. A desk made of an airplane wing, which Melissa found at Southeast Salvage and gave to Mark as a wedding gift, completes the aviation look. Melissa has a “bonus room” at the front of the house that doubles as her office and was built on what used to be the front porch. Another punch of fun is in the hallway next to the bonus room, which displays artwork that Melissa brought from Australia. The bright paintings depict abstract scenes, some of which Melissa intentionally placed away from the main parts of the house. “I keep all the nudies in private parts so hopefully people’s heads won’t explode,” she joked in her cheerful accent. As for the master bedroom, the couple gave up the suite in favor of the bedroom and bathroom closer to the front of the house and away from the lake noise, they said. The master bedroom sticks with light walls and a dark comforter, while both bathrooms are decidedly modern with vessel sinks, floating vanities and walk-in showers.

in the community with the opening of their downtown café, where they have unique dishes to share and equally interesting stories to tell. For the moment, though, they are satisfied with a well-designed home and that view that draws the envy of fellow lake homeowners. “We have a neighbor down the street who I think likes our house better than his own because of the view and the layout of it,” Mark said. “He’s jealous, and rightly so, because it is pretty freaking awesome,” Melissa said without a beat.

Outside, Mark and Melissa have created a relaxing lake retreat. A deck with generous seating has stairs that continue down to the pier, with another small deck about halfway down. The couple, married for five years, enjoys riding their pontoon boat, and otherwise taking in the great view. “There’s obviously something soothing about having a water view, and this one changes every day,” Mark said. “It’ll be foggy, smoky, bright, clear. You get sunrise from this angle and a really beautiful moonrise.” They have loved their time on the lake thus far, he said - the atmosphere, the people, the city – and plan to spread their roots

rtist Dave Bise is now on his second retirement. After retiring for the last time from a career in aviation and Life Safety, Bise is now serving as executive director of the Southern Culture Arts Foundation.

The pen-and-ink drawing artist is also dabbling in paint and watercolor, and is working on a graphic novel and a children’s book. The St. Louis, Missouri native moved down south to Alabama in 1996, got married, and has been here ever since. When he has the time to put his pen down and take a break from his artwork at his house on Logan Martin Lake, he has his hands busy with SCAF. “I retired from Life Safety and got back with the arts full time,” Bise said. “I really get inspired by the art and the kids. It reminds

me why it’s all worth it.” SCAF was started in July of 2012 and has aimed to establish itself as a support system for artists and art education from Birmingham all the way to Atlanta. “At Pell City High School, 145 students lost art support in July,” Bise said, who is executive director for SCAF. “We are looking at filling that gap.” SCAF has partnered with area schools and local community organizations like the Boys and Girls Club to promote art education. Bise said that SCAF assesses a school or organization’s need through a survey. From the survey results, Bise said that they are better able to help with instruction or use donations for art supplies and equipment.

Bise’s interest in art for children carries over to his home’s decor.

Bise said inspiration for the foundation came from a few people in the Pell City area who realized that there wasn’t a major art presence between the large cities of Birmingham and Atlanta. Bise said that his vision for SCAF is for it to be a place for visual, performing and literary artists along with art lovers to connect and also have a place to spark some interest in local artists and their work. “It’s been great,” Bise said. “The kids love it because they missed it. The parents love it because it’s important. The teachers and administrators love it because it offers students something outside of academics.” Bise has said that the St. Clair County community has been very receptive to SCAF. “We said these are your programs to develop,’” Bise said. “We will supply and support what you need. It’s really a winwin for everybody.” Bise said that as of now, SCAF is relying on donations, partnerships, and business sponsors and will start their major fundraising for future endeavors that could include seminars and conferences. Bise also hopes that SCAF will expand its services and

They are there sometimes and sometimes they’re not.” Bise also hopes that in the long-term SCAF can establish trusts and endowments for future programs, and is currently partnering with Mitcham Financial in Pell City for scholarships and awards. “The legacy I want the foundation to leave behind is to be a viable, stable advocate and resource for the arts in the southeast region of the U.S.,” Bise said. “The legacy is to have a charitable art foundation that is 38

available to support all the arts,” Bise said. Bise said that he has about 17 artists on board so far including authors and art galleries that are helping to build programs. A day’s work is never done when it comes to SCAF, but when it’s time for the day to come to a close, Bise retires to his home on the lake where he enjoys spending time with his wife, Merry, and their dog, Max, and cat, Sabrina. He said that his time at the lake often inspires his own personal artistic endeavors. “All I’ve gotta do is look out the window and get inspired by the diamonds in the water,” Bise said. “It’s a full-time job but I’m loving it. I’m living the dream.”
