From the Editor...

I

’m taking the liberty of making the announcement-I know we’re all happy, happy, happy that our summer season has officially begun. Now it’s time for all those summertime things we love doing in around Logan Martin Lake, from water sports and getting in a little fishing, to taking in the lakefront view from the patio or pool to having family and friends out for great grilling and get-togethers. We waited patiently for summer to get here and now it’s time to make the most of it! This month, we offer some talent from who I will call “extreme painter” Nikki Goswick who has all kinds of tips for refreshing your home with color. And not only with color, but with some fancy finishes and touches that you may find to be the perfect thing for revamping, both inside and out. There are new colors and products to take some of the “ouch” out of getting the job done, or calling in the expert is always an option, too. We stopped in at a special fishing event held at Lakeside Landing for our residents of the new Veterans Home in Pell City. Though the day was a little on the cool side, the veterans seemed to have a great time using their cane poles to see what the waters would offer. What made it a special day, too, was help from Pell City High School who assisted with the fishing event. Nice for everyone involved, a good

outing for our veterans along with a great opportunity for our young folks to meet these guys face to face who served our country. I took off on an ice cream adventure, while we all love it just scooped up into a bowl, I found some outstanding ice cream drinks you can whip up in no time to serve. One hint here, the raspberry chocolate-oh la la!! Our friends from the landmark restaurant Fincher’s in Pell City have taken off in a brand new venture, they’re now offering fine fare and all your favorites at their new facility, The Back Porch. It’s located where The Willow Grill once was, right on the water, easy to access by car or from the water. Graphic artist Abby Moorehead Kuhn will show us her beautiful designs for invitations and advertising along with t-shirt innovations for all kinds of events. The paddler goes out to Hatchet Creek, which is part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail, and you’ll meet some of state dignitaries to tell us about the creek’s offerings and importance to our resources. Then, you’ll meet the group that calls themselves UTurn Fitness and meets out in Lakeside Park for some outstanding workouts together. They get together on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. to work out for an hour together and you’re welcome to join them for their hard core exercise routines. So here’s hoping you’re looking forward to a great summer on the lake, that you find some helpful information in our June issue, and as always, our staff thanks you for your ideas and support!

esidents of the Col. Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home were treated to a fishing trip at Lakeside Landing earlier this month. The trip, organized by the Veterans Home, Lakeside Hospice and a group called Military Assistance Personal Support (M.A.P.S.), was attended by 32 veterans, as well as members of the Pell

City High School Fishing Team. “We were talking to our veterans, and they wanted to go fishing,” said Kristen Copeland, activities director at the Veterans Home. Copeland said she thinks the outing went wonderfully. There were some early concerns about the weather that day, but in the end, everything turned out fine, she said.

called “We Honor Veterans,” Lakeside Hospice participates in, that “they are not only helping them at the end of life,” but also “helping them get through life.” Carden was also responsible for getting the PCHS fishing team to participate in the event. “What better thing than to put a young man with an older man and let him tell all the stories he’s been through, and maybe build a bond and have a friendship through that,” she said.

Copeland also said that she believes the fishing outing is something that could turn into a regular trip, maybe even on a quarterly basis. “We like to get our residents out as much as possible,” she said. Veterans Home resident Pettus Waugh, retired from the U.S. Army, agrees that it is “good to get out.” He said that the trip was “lovely, 8

just lovely,” and the sight of Logan Martin Lake was “beautiful.” Teresa Carden of Lakeside Hospice explained why her business wanted to get involved with the trip. “Well, we work with veterans everyday,” she said. “Lakeside Hospice has always been a big part of veterans’ care at the end of life.” Carden says, through a program

Curtis Gossett, coach of the PCHS fishing team, says his team wanted to be involved with the trip to “give back to those who gave us the freedom to fish.” He also said it was a great opportunity to talk and share stories with our veterans. “It is just a little bit that we’re giving back for what they have done,” he said. Veteran Lorenzo Burke certainly welcomed the fishing trip. Oh, this is wonderful,” he said. “I’m enjoying this very much. This is really nice.” Burke was accompanied on the pier

Wyatt said the trip was enjoyable, and so was her time with Burke. “I’m having fun and learning about his life,” she said. “And I get to thank him for serving.” Veteran Claude Wadsworth had luck on his side the day of the fishing trip, pulling in four fish from the pier. When asked how he managed to pull in more fish than his fellow veterans, he gave all the credit to Hayden Bartee, a tenth grader on the PCHS fishing team. 10

Veteran Lorenza Burke talks with team member Breanna Wyatt on the fishing trip.

“Well, I give him all the credit, he knows how to bait the hook,” said Wadsworth. Bartee, like Wyatt, appreciated the time spent with the veterans. “It’s just a joy to be out here,” he said. “It gives us an opportunity to give back to these nice men for the things they’ve done for our country, the great things they’ve done for us.” Many other groups pitched in to make this trip become a reality, including Bass Pro Shops, Riverside Outdoors and Lakeside Landing. Cane poles were purchased at a discount from Bass Pro Shops in Leeds and Riverside Outdoors, and Lakeside Landing waived the $3 fishing fee for the veterans. Individual donations were also made to help with the cost of the trip. “We’re very, very blessed,” said Carden. Copeland hopes the fishing trips are something that can be done on a regular basis in the future. In addition to the fishing trips, Copeland has many more activities in the works for the veterans, including an antique car show, a country/ western day, a Hawaiian luau, an Armed Forces celebration and a possible trip to a Birmingham Barons game.

She also teaches the class at Moody Park. “I believe it’s never too late for a ‘U-Turn’ in life or fitness,” she said. “I gave up a good-paying desk job to pursue my dream of a fitness career. My objective is to help others reach their fitness goals, which in turn helps improve so many other aspects of life, including quality of life, self-confidence and energy to tackle daily tasks as well as dreams.” Kirkes said fitness, or lack thereof, affects a person’s mindset, which can lead to lack of success in many other

areas. “Oftentimes after a woman marries and has children, she puts herself last, mainly her health, and she loses her spark of energy and zest for life,” she said. “Exercise, especially with friends who will hold you accountable and make it fun, can bring so much joy back to a woman’s life. That’s what I want to help other women find. I want women to feel strong, healthy and empowered,” Kirkes said. Kirkes said the class is open to both women and men. “You bring your own yoga mat and water,” she said. “We use free weights, kettle bells, resistance bands and weighted balls.” Kirkes said she has personally been working out for 10 years, and created this program herself. The class meets from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday in Lakeside Park. “We typically have 8 to10 people per session,” she said. “It is open to anyone and is recommended for healthy beginners to very fit individuals with more advanced skills. It is not a lowimpact workout. We do lunges, squatting, jogging, jumping and more. It’s a total body workout in one hour.”

U-Turn Fitness combines strength training and cardio into one workout.

Rose Flurry, of Pell City, said she joined the class the first week of April. “I usually go two times a week,” she said. “It’s right after I get off work, so it’s perfect.” Flurry said she really enjoys exercising at Lakeside Park in the beautiful lake setting. “It’s a good group,” she said. “I feel very comfortable exercising with everybody, we all have the same goals.” Flurry said her main goals are to tone up and get in shape. “I have definitely seen toning in my arms,” she said. “I especially wanted to tone my arms and abs. I wanted a whole-body workout instead of partial. I didn’t want just cardio. I personally needed strength training and toning, which is why took this class.” Flurry said when she started the class she didn’t know Kirkes or the other participants. 18

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - June 2013

“We talk to each other and socialize while we exercise,” she said. “I get the benefits from working out and also make new friends. It’s real inviting, you don’t feel intimidated at all.” Flurry said Kirkes is a great instructor. “I’ve established friendships and the group keeps me motivated,” she said. Alicia Ballard of Pell City said she began taking the classes when they started in January. “I wanted to get in better shape,” she said. “I’m a nurse and I knew I wasn’t getting proper exercise.” Ballard said she attends as often as her schedule allows. “It’s good to get out and get motivated,” she said. “It’s a very nice environment on the lake. The other people in the class, we help each other out and encourage each other.” For more information call Jessica Kirkes at 205-9190194.

Proper lakeside fare always includes the option of a perfect burger.

By Boat or By Car, Pull Into The Back Porch for Great Eats The famous Finchers open a brand new eatery By CHRIS NORWOOD Photos by Brian Schoenhals

T

hey say that sometimes when God closes a door, he opens a window. And sometimes, the owners of an iconic eatery will close a location in Renfroe and open back up on the lake under a different name. Or something like that. The iconic Renfroe eatery, if you have not guessed, would be the original Finchers, home of the fried catfish that everyone should eat in Alabama before they die.

20

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - June 2013

Owners Steve and Kristi Fincher and Blake and Lee Cook closed down and moved the entire operation to Clear Creek Harbor on the Talladega side of Logan Martin Lake. They have been open there for four weeks now as the Back Porch Grill. By the way, fear not, Finchers fans, in Pell City and Sylacauga: the locations in your towns remain open as well.

It’s hard to find anyone who can resist the fried shrimp, hushpuppies and catfish at The Back Porch Grill.

The menu from Finchers is carried over from the original Fincher’s, according to Kristi Fincher. The specials include fresh grilled or fried shrimp brought up from the Gulf of Mexico every week, along with farm-raised grilled or the fried catfish mentioned earlier. Crab claws are another favorite, along with steaks and burgers. “We’ll have our beer and wine license in a few weeks, but we’re not there yet,” she said. Other items listed on the menu include Philly cheese steaks, club sandwiches, turkey and ham sandwiches, chicken salad, Polish dogs, hot dogs, po’ boys, chicken fingers, bologna sandwiches and grilled pork chops. Grilled chicken, grilled shrimp and chef salads are also available. Sides include burger-baked beans, slaw, French fries and baked potatoes in the evening only. They also serve breakfast Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with the options including omelets, scrambled or fried eggs, bacon or sausage, hash-browns, grits, pancakes, toast or biscuits, gravy biscuits and breakfast sandwiches. The shrimp plates are priced at $11.99 to $13.99, and 22

Traveling the Coosa

Todd Ray and his son Gatlin paddled Hatchet Creek together. I like to see families paddling together. Todd is originally from Childersburg.

First Annual Hatchet Creek Festival Draws a Crowd Eighty paddlers join in the fun the creek offers Story and photos by DAVID ATCHISON

O

rganizers said the Cahaba Lily is still sprinkled in bloom along Hatchet Creek, but someone else told me I may have to stick my head under the water to see them. Before heading out early that morning Saturday to Hatchet Creek, which is part of the Alabama Scenic River

28

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - June 2013

Trail and a tributary of the Coosa River, I checked the weather - flooding. Hatchet Creek is south of Sylacauga in Coosa County, and forecasters said Childersburg and Sylacauga had experienced flooding. I figured the “float down the creek was cancelled, but off I went anyway.

311948

Buddy Wise of Shelby County pulls along the shore after running one of the many rapids along Hatchet Creek. Buddy is a member of The Birmingham Canoe Club. I was surprised to see him at the Hatchet Creek Festival, but it’s like I’m always saying, you never know who you are going to see or meet out on the water.

Roger Vines, who is with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System in Coosa County and organized the “float” trip, was surprised when 80 people showed up to paddle, despite the flooding rains we got the night before and also that morning. “After all the planning and money spent on this, I thought nobody was going to show up,” he said. Vines secured a $4,000 tourism grant to help hold the first annual Hatchet Creek Festival. “We had 87 people who registered and all but seven showed up,” he said. There were also 40 volunteers, including two safety boaters I became friends with, Sam Lentz of Corinth, Miss.; and John Hayes of Montgomery. The two men are close friends and longdistance paddlers. They attended the same college in North Alabama. Sam and John have paddled the entire 631-mile Alabama Scenic River Trail along the Coosa River. “We paddled it in two sections,” Sam said. The two men have also paddled the entire Tallapoosa and the Black Warrior Rivers. 30

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - June 2013

“We plan to paddle the Cahaba River and the Tennessee River, too,” Sam said. Paddlers met at the put-in, at the U.S. 280 bridge at Hatchet Creek. Everyone unloaded their boats and camping gear and then drove to the take-out, just past the U.S. 231 bridge. We left our vehicles on Sally Holland’s property and rode a bus back to the put-in. Our camping gear was transported to a campsite about sixand-a-half miles downstream from where we started. The midway point, Dunnam’s Halfway Campsite, is a designated Alabama Scenic River Trail campsite open to all paddlers heading down Hatchet Creek. The campsite is on Tommy and Beverly Bass’ property. They were great hosts for this event, which included a delicious dinner and breakfast, along with a variety of speakers and live music. Former NFL coach Bobby Jackson, who lives in Alpine in Talladega County, was the devotional speaker Sunday morning. He was really funny and made a lot of people laugh, but he also delivered a message.

Volunteer cooks prepare breakfast at base camp during the inaugural Hatchet Creek Festival.

It was still raining when paddlers got back to the put-in Saturday morning for the two-day trip, but it wasn’t long before people were putting their boats into the water and paddling on down Hatchet Creek. What’s a little rain when you are going to get a little wet anyway? 32

I think the rain actually helped raise the water creek level just enough to make this an enjoyable and memorable creek trip for everyone. The water was running about 450 cfs (cubic feet per second). Locals say ideally 500-700 is much better, but people have paddled the creek in

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - June 2013

the middle of summer with very little water running. You just have to drag your boat over the rocks – not me. I was a little surprised though, as I think most people were that day. I thought we would see mostly flat water, with a couple of shoals here and there. Actually, there were shoals or rapids around almost every bend of the creek, which kept it interesting for everyone. Most of the moving water was rocky-shallow shoals or Class 1 rapids. The whitewater rapids were pretty easy, straightforward, as far as picking your way through. There were a couple of rapids that border on Class 2, in my opinion. “There was a lot more whitewater action than I thought,” said Todd Ray, 41, of Phenix City. “It was almost all whitewater.” Todd, who is originally from Childersburg, was paddling with his 12-year-old son, Gatlin, who really looked good in his river-play boat. Young folks tend to do better at kayaking, especially in whitewater, than us older folks. “I have wanted to paddle this creek for a while,” Todd said. He said Gatlin and his daughter are taking a week-long whitewater kayaking course this summer at the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson, N.C. Kayaking is really becoming a popular past time for both the young and old, and it is great exercise for everyone. I did get to practice rescue techniques quite a bit over the weekend, but that was fine with me. Everyone “swims” every now and then when kayaking. Some people do it more than others, but that is just the nature of this outdoor adventure sport. This section of Hatchet Creek offered a rapid with a two-foot drop and a sort of S-turn rapid that forced

Sally Holland, who lives along the banks of Hatchet Creek, and Nora Kelley of Rockford, are surprised as fire shoots up high from a hollow log. A hollow log is cut, with a small opening at the base. The base hole is covered with dirt. Fire coals are shoveled into the log from the top. When the dirt is removed from the base hole, the fire shoots up out of the hollow log. It’s almost as fun as watching fireworks.

boaters to maneuver their kayak from left to right and then back to the left. About one mile before the take-out, Socapatoy Creek intersects Hatchet Creek. There is a small rocky area on river left that you can get out of your boat and stretch your legs. It’s also a great place for taking pictures. Paddlers can get out of their boats, stretch their legs and have lunch before finishing their 13-mile journey. I must say, the first Hatchet Creek Festival was a great success, and I may go back next year. We’ll see. But for now, I am ready to get back onto the calmer waters of Logan Martin Lake. So until then have a safe and wonderful time on the water.

Nikki Goswick’s artistry is done to enhance homes.

Painting With A Purpose Nikki Goswick builds her business on quality work By Emily Adams Photos by Brian Schoenhals

I

f it’s old, ugly or dirty, Nikki Goswick can make it look new again with just a bucket of paint and some elbow grease. The veteran house painter is practiced in many skills, like

spackling, caulking, sanding, feather and sponge painting, wallpaper removal, pressure washing – and that’s just what she could fit on her business card. “I can do anything with paint,” Goswick said. “It’s peaceful to me to paint a wall and make something that was ugly look beautiful, and that’s what I do.” Goswick has been a residential and commercial painter

a

for 15 years, but only recently left her family’s business to branch out on her own. Until now, she worked for Classic Colors, owned by her father and sister, Mark and Melissa Goswick. But Nikki, who said she liked the idea of making her own money and being her

own boss, decided to go her own way and started Colors By Nikk in April. Still, she knows who to credit with her success thus far. “My dad is the one who gave me 15 years of experience and enough guts to start my own business,” Goswick said.

“He taught me everything I know about spraying, rolling, caulking, spackling, how to pressure wash, remove wallpaper, everything. He taught me how, and it’s just been going since then.” One of her first jobs on her own is a major undertaking. Goswick is painting and repairing about 11 rooms, and possibly the exterior, of a five-bedroom, four-bathroom lake house in Talladega County. The task will take her through the summer months, but she is fitting in other jobs as she goes and continuing to build that all-important customer base. “A satisfied customer is my most important goal, and I do go out of my way to satisfy them,” she said. “If they need me to do it, I do it. I don’t care what it is. I have picked out comforters and curtains, bought air filters, driven across town to pick up paint charts for people. Anything they need.” Goswick’s willingness to go the extra mile is something she feels sets her apart in a male-dominated field. “In a way, being a female is not the best thing, because there are so many guys in the business, but this is my opinion of it: A woman’s going to do it better than a man,” she said. “You know why? Because women are perfectionists. We’re going to put that effort in that men won’t, do that extra little thing, like decorate or light some candles, whatever it takes to please the homeowner. That’s the difference between me and a male painter. I have a

more personal relationship with the homeowner.” Goswick intentionally left the “i” off of Nikki in her business name to detract attention from her gender, she said. “I stopped at Nikk for a couple reasons, but mainly so I could get in the door not letting them worry about me being a woman,” she said. “I feel like once people get to know me, they know I’m trustworthy and honest and do a quality job.” Don’t think she’s afraid of a little dirt and grime either (though she admits it’s not her favorite part of the job). “I’ve been up there on a 30-foot ladder plenty of times when its 99 degrees, painting, sanding and getting stung by bees,” she said. “Painting is just something I like. I love it. I’ve always felt like if you’re doing something you enjoy, its 36

never a chore to go to work – unless you pressure washed for 10 hours the day before, like I did yesterday, and everything in your body hurts. Then it’s a chore!” Goswick, who swears by Sherwin Williams paint and Purdy brushes, said she especially enjoys the opportunity to work with the homeowner on the project, but she always allows them to dictate the work. “Most of the time, they know what they want done,” she said. “On the project I’m doing now, they trusted me to pick some of the colors and do a lot of the work on my own judgment, and that’s been really exciting for me too.” The 20-plus-foot tall foyer in her current customer’s home is a space Goswick is particularly proud of, she said, as she found creative ways to reach the tall walls over the large staircase that separates them and found an exact paint

color match for the stairway banisters to the hardwood floors. “At first the customer had picked a milk chocolate color for the railing, and I painted it and she came and looked and said, ‘No way!’” Goswick said. “So I told her I would handle it. It took me about five minutes to pick a color, and it matches it perfectly, so I guess I have an eye for it. If I spend enough time with a customer, I can almost tell you what they want by the things they say.” At one time, Goswick envisioned herself becoming a chef, but a desire to be near her tightly-knit family led her 38

to paint, and it has turned into a career she loves. “I couldn’t be happier,” she said. “Starting my own business is one of the most exciting things I think I’ve ever done. It gives me a sense of pride in my work, because I know I won’t stay in business if I’m not good at it. Plus, I don’t want to let my parents or my family down, because we’re so close. I couldn’t do that. I have a lot of motivation to be a success.” Goswick offers free estimates and is available at 256592-8331. Contact Emily Adams at eadams@dailyhome.com.

Painting is not as easy as it seems. Here are a few common mistakes, and how to avoid them, from professional painter Nikki Goswick. • Paint before you carpet: When remodeling your home, be sure to paint the walls before installing new carpet. “The biggest mistake people make is putting in carpet too soon,” Goswick said. “Any painter is going to spill a little paint, no matter how many drop cloths they put out. And if we have to do any sanding, it goes straight into the carpet, so never put new carpet in before the walls are done.” • Start small: If it’s your first time painting, start in a room that won’t be seen by everyone, like the laundry room. “If you find that to be successful, then go to a bigger room,” she said. “Give yourself some time to get it right.” • Test it out: Don’t buy a gallon of paint at once, Goswick recommends, even though it may be a better value. Instead, buy a pint of the color you want, along with a paint brush about 3-inches wide. Paint a test spot on the wall in a dark location and a place that gets natural light. “Turn the lights off and on, and see what you like,” she said. “Always expect the color to turn out a shade darker than what’s on the sample card.” • Take off the tape: Line the molding and door and window frames with painter’s tape (Goswick recommends Frog tape) before you paint, but don’t leave it on too long. “Get the job done, let it dry overnight, and get that tape off the next day,” she said. • Smooth the walls: Take any nails out of the wall and fill the

holes before painting. Also do any caulking or sheetrock repairs necessary. If using sheetrock mud, Goswick recommends letting it dry, sanding it down and applying a light coat of paint or primer to even out the color. • Cut and back roll: When using a paint roller, always back roll to smooth over any lines or imperfections. “Cut the whole wall from top to bottom, which means paint around all the trim, then come behind it and roll the rest of the wall,” she said. “You have to move pretty fast once you start rolling or it will flash, where the trim will dry before the wall and they’ll be different colors. Once it’s rolled, go over it again lightly with a dry roller to smooth over imperfections.” • Don’t double dip: To avoid drips on your wall, a paint brush or roller should be wet, but not dripping. “Drips are hideous, and they’re hard to get out, so always watch your brush and make sure it’s not oversaturated before you start to paint,” Goswick said. • Go for two: Most walls need two coats of paint. “It ensures the longevity and color of the paint, and it just looks better,” she said. “It’s not the cheaper way to go, but if you’re into quality, it usually needs to be done.”

Art by the Water

For This Artist, It’s All About New Things Abby Kuhn expands upon what her father taught her By AZIZA JACKSON

W

hen she’s not relaxing in her home on Logan Martin Lake with her husband, Sam, and their two pets, graphic artist Abby Kuhn is thinking about the next big thing coming along on her artistic path. Even her dog, Banksy, is named after her favorite street artist. Although Kuhn is the daughter of accomplished artist Tommy Morehead, she is blazing a trail all her own. After graduating from the University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications and a minor in graphic design, Kuhn worked for several design companies. “My first two design jobs were at

stationery companies in Birmingham,” Kuhn said. “I liked working on invitations, but hated the confines of a cubicle so I went back to school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham to get a master’s degree in art education.” Kuhn currently teaches visual art at Munford Elementary School to students in kindergarten to fifth grade and says that teaching art has proven itself to be a more natural fit for her professionally. “I have the best job in the world,” Kuhn said. “I work with kids who are

genuinely excited and engaged. I get to see them develop over the year. I post their artwork in digital art portfolios on Artsonia.com. It is fun to look back and see how they have improved.” Although Kuhn encourages students to follow her lead in the classroom, she often finds beauty in their own interpretations that sprout from their vivid imaginations. “I love when their work looks nothing like my example,” Kuhn said. “Sometimes, their ideas really surprise me,” she said. “However the biggest perk is getting paid to make art all day.

Kuhn said she’s been known to spend hours searching for the perfect font for a design.

It’s a blessing to love your job.” One can only imagine that Kuhn sees the same look in her students’ eyes that she had for her father while growing up. “My dad has everything to do with my love for art,” Kuhn said. “I remember drawing with him before I was in preschool. He would draw a line down the middle of large piece of paper and practice one step at a time drawings with me.” Kuhn said that her father’s work has had a heavy influence on the type

of art she has been drawn to over the years. “I prefer impressionistic works with bold loose lines. I don’t like works that are too controlled or precise,” Kuhn said. “I would love to be like him when I grow up,” she said. “He works much faster and with more confidence. I am sure I’ll get there one day.” With most of her time spent in the classroom, Kuhn has also been busy designing invitations through freelance work and through her shop

on Etsy, an online marketplace for handmade, vintage, and art items. “I won’t retire from invitations completely,” she said. “I enjoy working on them. I like the simplicity of the layout. I have been known to spend an hour before committing to a font,” Kuhn said. Kuhn also said that she would love to be a printmaker, a love that came from time spent with lithography in graduate school, but she believes that that dream may be in the distant future due to a current lack of space and equipment. “This summer, I plan to start painting on tar paper, the kind that roofers use under shingles,” Kuhn said. “My colleague, Juliet Pruit, experimented with tar paper at a workshop in Gulf Shores last fall. I love heavy weight papers and tar paper is pretty heavy. I’m intrigued by the idea of working on black. My family can testify that I loathe hardware stores but that will be the first place I go during my summer break.”

At left, Use of color and contrast along with lively fonts are put together to add emphasis to Kuhn’s work.

At right, Kuhn created this design for a fundraiser for a Talladega child with cancer.

However, Kuhn said that the most interesting project currently underway is the “One Million Bones Project” taking place right in her classroom. “One Million Bones is an art installation project that will serve as a visual petition to end genocide and mass atrocities around the world,” Kuhn said. “That’s a big scary topic at any age, but I think that it’s important that my students learn that visual art is powerful. It can carry a heavy message without words.” Kuhn said that the goal of “One Million Bones” is to have students, artists, and activists from all around the world create a bone what will be used in a massive installation that will be displayed at the National Mall in Washington D.C. this summer. “My students created over a thousand bone sculptures for the project in May,” Kuhn said. “I think the project 44

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - June 2013

has potential to be in art history books by the time my elementary students are in college. It’s important to me that they think outside of the museum.” All that Kuhn has done and will continue to do is tied in to her definition that art is the “visual representation of ideas, feelings, and senses through any creative meanings possible.” “I hope to establish a body of work and begin showing my work to an audience over the age of 12 on a regular basis,” Kuhn said. “I think it’s important for art teachers to be artists. I’m confident in my work conceptually but I’m still developing my own unique style. “In five years, I would hope that someone could see my work from a distance and say, ‘I believe that is by Abby Kuhn.’”

recipes adding to the basics. And, too, they all work well if you want to substitute frozen yogurt or sherbet to cut down on fat and calories. And as for toppings, try fruit or whipped cream, even cookies. The whipped varieties are also available in “no sugar” brands. So let’s get started with our personal household favorite, the Chocolate Raspberry Shake! Chocolate Rasberry Shake What you need: One and a half cups raspberries One and a fourth cups fat-free skim milk One and a third cups Yoplait Original 99 percent fat free red raspberry yogurt (two six ounce containers) One half cup fat free chocolate syrup

What you do: Place all ingredients in a blender, cover and blend on high speed for about 30 seconds or until smooth and serve immediately. *I served this with Dove raspberry filled dark chocolates on the side…yum! Calories: 185

Dreamy (And I mean DREAMY!) Tropical Cream Fizz What you need:

Three jiggers Crème de Banana Three jiggers light rum Three cups vanilla ice cream One cup milk One cup of ice cubes Two whole bananas, sliced Sprinkle of nutmeg on top of whipped topping-optional.

Two cups mango or tropical juice blend (I used pina colada mix). ¼ to ½ cup lime juice-fresh squeezed is best 12 to 14 ice cubes One cup club soda (I used lemon-lime soda instead) One pint coconut ice cream, sorbet or vanilla ice cream Top with shaved coconut, rainbow sprinkles or fruitI added coconut and sliced mangos and apricots. Colorful straws and cocktail umbrellas add a little fun to the presentation. And the mango pieces are great for dipping!

What you do: Place all ingredients in a blender and mix until bananas and ice cubes are well blended. Serve in tall chilled glasses, top with whipped cream and sprinkle with nutmeg. Serves six. As a dessert drink, this goes well served with chocolate graham crackers or vanilla wafers.

What you do: Chill serving glasses in freezer for several hours. Place juice, lime juice and soda in a blender, cover and blend on high about 45 seconds or until smooth. Pour mixture into serving glasses, leaving room for one scoop of ice cream in each, add ice cream and garnish with coconut or sprinkles. Note: I blended the ice
