Enjoying the lake to the max

Families gather at Logan Martin for a low country boil.

From the editor… There is a saying around these parts: “You never know how many friends you have until you own a lake house.” And it’s true. Weekends and holidays at home on the lake are like a revolving door of company. But if you’re like me, you wouldn’t have it any other way. That’s the allure of the lake – a special place to spend time with good friends and family. And in the pages of this month’s issue of Lakeside Magazine, you’ll find others just like me, people who enjoy sharing their lakeside vantage point with others. Pell City’s Darrell and Susan Parker know how to take advantage of their prime location on the lake by offering up a traditional Low Country Boil to get the family and friends of their niece and nephew-to-be, Bethany Abbott and Nick Fees, together to celebrate their engagement. Poolside at Johnny and Cindy Grimes’ lakeside home is the place to be for entertaining. They have an outdoor cooking center they designed themselves that is perfect for get-togethers, one of their favorite places to entertain. Throughout Lakeside this month, other photos and stories abound about people just doing what comes naturally when it comes to lakeside living – enjoying it all. After all, that’s what lake life is all about. It’s August. It’s Lakeside. It’s where you want to be.

Making Waves From wakesurfing to boating, Skier’s Marine focuses on fun in the sun

Skier’s Marine has boats to meet any water sports need. Story by Kendra Carter Photos by Bob Crisp and Brian Schoenhals Lakeside boating and water sports lovers have something to make waves about this summer in the latest features and equipment trends. At Skier’s Marine in Westover, owner Rett Tyler knows what’s new for boating enthusiasts and water sports lovers alike. Skier’s has been in business for more

than 25 years, serving its customers for 15 years at its current location off U.S. 280 in Westover. Employees at the shop do boat servicing in addition to selling boats like Malibu Ski Boats and Premier Marine pontoon boats. Skiers Marine also sells wake boards, water skis and other equipment from brands like Proline, Straight Line and Connelly. In the water, Tyler said, the new sport

He said boats have to go slower with wakesurfing, saying it’s imperative to keep the boat moving at 10 miles per hour. Tyler added that cruise control features that now come standard on new Malibu boats helps the driver keep the boat’s speed in check. The cruise feature is just part of what Tyler said is the latest thing in boats — computerized consoles to control most facets of the boat’s operation. On the boat’s dash, screens are set up for cruise control, gauges, depth meter, media output and stereo system. “Stuff you used to could do in cars, now you can do in boats,” Tyler said. “They’re just really driver friendly.” Tyler said for water sports enthusiasts, the models also have presets available to set ideal conditions for wakeboarding based on the water levels. The computer remembers and can set

up the wedge position and water levels by pulling water into wells on the underside of the boat. Pumps, which can be controlled on the console, take in the water — up to 450 pounds worth. Tyler said the process only takes between three and four minutes to complete. A “go home” preset is also available on the console, which turns off the system and lets all the water out. If boat is malfunctioning, the driver can also run diagnostics on the boat to find out what exactly the problem is, and the driver can download 250 songs from an iPod or other MP3 device to the boat’s 1,000-watt stereo Customers are responding postively to the new features on the latest Malibu models, Tyler said. “They like having the same features on their boats that they’re accustomed to having on their cars.” But the console is only available on 2009 models. “Older boats don’t have the technology to do that,” he added. And when upgrades to the system are released in 2010, 2011 and 2012, they can be applied to the 2009 boats.

Modern ski boats have programable presets.

ART BY THE WATER Lonergan shares talent with others By Brandon Fincher Photos by Bob Crisp

John Lonergan has been fascinated with art since he was a kid and has made a living from painting as an adult. But there came a time when Lonergan had to decide what kind of painting he would make a career out of not long after he graduated with an art degree from the University of Alabama. “I majored in commercial art and worked about a year in Birmingham. Then I started freelancing commercial art from home and couldn’t make any money. I started painting houses again with my dad when I got a call from my old art teacher wanting me to replace her at (Pell City) high school. “I never wanted to be a teacher, so I skipped the first year. By the second year, I was ready to do something to make a little more money than house

painting.” Luckily, for Central Alabama’s art scene and for the thousands of students with whom he has shared his knowledge over the years, his reservations were unfounded. He taught in school for 25 years before retiring and starting an adult art class in Birmingham. “I’ve been really lucky. I’ve got a good following. I’ve probably taught over 500 adults over the past 18 years. Some of the first ones are still taking it,” Lonergan said. “We enjoy being around each other.” His students have a talented and knowledgeable source from which to learn. He cites landscape painters George Ennis and Camille Corot and many of the French and American impressionists such as John Singer Sargent as influences.

Lonergan paints exclusively with oils because he likes the richness of the colors and the depth that medium provides.

Contemporary painters he is a fan of include David Leffel, Richard Schmid and Dan Gerhartz. Lonergan can remember taking an interest in art all the way back to when he started elementary school. “It’s hard to say who first got me interested (in art). I remember my first-grade teacher drawing things on the board, and I thought it was interesting. My dad painted signs on the side. He was also a welder at the old cotton mill here. He could draw pretty well, considering he never really had any training,” Lonergan said. He said his family encouraged him to pursue his interest in art, which kept him motivated to develop his skill. While Lonergan has used different mediums, such as acrylic and watercolor, he now paints exclusively with oils. “Oil, to me it has greater depth; the colors are richer; it’s more versatile, and I just like it,” Lonergan said. ter in quite the same way as someone without artistic training might try to find a subject. “The main thing is the abstract pattern and the way the light and dark form the composition. The subject matter, I won’t say it’s irrelevant, but it’s not as important,” Lonergan said. “For instance, the same subject in bad light would not be paintable, where the light really makes everything. If you’ve got a really interesting subject and good light too, that’s a bonus.” He will paint subjects ranging from landscapes, still lifes, character studies and the occasional formal portrait. He enjoys being able create something special in his paintings by being able to zone out from the everyday world and work from his subconscious. “It’s sort of amazing, a lot of times, to see a finished product and think, ‘I’m not sure I even know how to do that. How did that take place?’” Lonergan said. He takes pleasure in the entire process of making a painting from the actual creation to seeing someone purchase a piece he created. “I know most people say it’s the act of creating and all, but I think I like the finished product too, although, as soon as you do one, you’re ready to do something else and keep going. But if you didn’t have a product at the end, the process wouldn’t be valid,” Lonergan said. You can find his artwork exclusively at Little House on Linden gallery in Homewood.

Low Country Boil A great way to gather friends and family by the water

Story by Elsie Hodnett Photos by Brian Schoenhals

The event was perfect: two families, a host of friends and Logan Martin Lake in the background. The Low Country Boil Engagement Party honoring Bethany Abbott and Nick Fees was a smashing success. “We wanted to do a familytype engagement party, instead of having it at an event place,” said Susan Parker, Bethany’s aunt, who hosted the event with her husband, Darrell, at their lakeside home along with her brother and his wife, Tommy and Jimmie Sue Johnson. Parker said she wanted the engagement party to be something all the family and friends could enjoy. “We thought a Low Country Boil would be a fun thing to

do outside,” she said. “It is something different from the barbecues or traditional meals.” Parker said her family held shrimp and crawfish boils here and there while their children were growing up. “Usually we would get together and have a boil and dump it out on the piers,” she said. “But this time we added Lagniappe, or ‘a little something extra.’ We are having the crawfish and shrimp boil, but other things as well.” Bruce Ervin, a chef with the Traveling Chefs of Pell City’s Sammie’s Touch ‘N Go Restaurant, said in addition to the boil, which included both crawfish and shrimp along with sausage, corn, and potatoes, the menu featured shrimp and grits,

location is a part of the family history. “This used to be the family cotton farm in the early 1900s,” he said. Johnson said his parents lived on the property before Logan Martin Lake was created. “The house had to be moved, because the water was going to be there,” he said. “This is what remains of the family farm, and it’s still in the family. Having the engagement party here ties into our roots.” And those roots continue to grow. Four generations have lived on the property, he said. “It is appropriate that we celebrate Bethany’s and Nick’s commitment here tonight.”

It was a planned meeting. I spoke to Bobby over the telephone a couple of months before. Bobby was looking for someone to paddle with, and a mutual friend directed Bobby my way. Bobby has lived along Logan Martin Lake for the past three years, in Lincoln. “I thought I would be fishing every day, but I’m doing this,” said the 56-year-old man. “I probably have 50 fishing rods; that’s the bad thing about it.” Bobby, who is originally from Saks, started kayaking in the ‘80s when he was a physical fitness director for the YMCA in Anniston.

his recreational kayak. “It’s got a larger cockpit. I like a large cockpit.” Bobby has kayaked on flat water and whitewater. “I like whitewater,” he said. “With whitewater, you have to use your muscles and mind.” Bobby also enjoys paddling along the lake. “I’m a talker,” he said. “I enjoy stopping and talking to people. I meet some really nice people on this river.” And Bobby is a talker, but he is also an excellent paddler and paddles every day, rain or shine, cold or hot. “It gets in your blood,” Bobby said. “Whether it’s 10 degrees or 100 degrees, it doesn’t matter.”

RIGHT: McDaniel is planning to paddle the entire Alabama Scenic River Trail, either this fall or next spring.

26

We first met on the water near the old two-lane bridge along U.S. 78, between Riverside and Lincoln. We were easy to spot – we were the only two around in kayaks. I had left from Riverside, and Bobby had paddled up river from the Lincoln side of Logan Martin Lake. We talked for a while before we headed across the choppy river to the west side of the lake and through what one person called “The Hole in the Wall.” The Hole in the Wall was just that – a hole in a wall. It opened up into the Safe Harbor RV Park slough. It was sort of neat. A flock of mallards met us on the other side, and they swam near our boats until we got a little too close, and the wild ducks flushed into the sky. I also spotted a quackless duck in the slough. In the slough, we also met Amanda O’Barr, who was fishing from a pier. I started joking with her.

“What time is dinner?” I asked. “I have to catch it first,” she answered back. Just as we paddled in front of the pier she was fishing from, her fishing pole began to bend. “You got a fish,” I said. And she started reeling in her prize catch. It was a monster, all of 3 ounces. She took it directly to her husband, who unhooked the fish for her. “Do you want me to take your picture with that monster,” I said. Amanda and her husband chuckled. Amanda made it clear; she didn’t want her picture taken, so we paddled on. The water was much calmer in the slough. It was really rough out in the main river channel.

Bobby and I paddled up one more slough and then headed back to where I began my trip. Bobby, who has worked at a hardware store in Oxford for the past 22 years, is planning to paddle from Rome, Ga., to Fort Morgan, the entire Alabama Scenic River Trail, plus. “It’s been done twice. I want to go all the way from Rome, which is a little further,” he said. “I’m fixing to be out of a job, so it’s the perfect time to do it.” His employer is moving operations from Oxford to Montgomery, so he is going to paddle the entire Alabama Scenic River Trail while he has the chance and before he gets too old, he said. Bobby paddles daily, about 15 miles a day, getting in shape for his long journey. He thinks it will take him about 42 days to complete his trip. Bobby said he’s already paddled once from Rome, Ga., to Lincoln. It took him about five days. “The problem is getting over the dams,” he said. Bobby plans to carry the essentials, clothing, a tent and small stove. “I’m hoping to lose about 25 pounds on this trip,” he said, adding that he will buy supplies along the way. “I’ll stop every three to four days and get a motel room, so I can shower and rejuvenate. I don’t want to kill myself.” We eventually headed off in different directions, but we promised each other to paddle together again soon. Bobby will probably join me on my next trip from Riverside to Lincoln to explore Blue Eye Creek. So, until then, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Two anglers from Riverside try their luck under the railroad trestle that spans across Logan Martin Lake between Riverside and Lincoln.

The home built by BJ and Phyllis Armistead in the Eagle Point development has a hilltop view of Logan Martin Lake.

Story by Laura Nation-Atchison Photos by Bob Crisp

Dream home is a masterpiece of waterfront architecture It’s gracious, it’s elegant and it rambles across a hilltop overlooking Logan Martin Lake in the Eagle Point development in Pell City. Phyllis Armistead smiles recalling the story of how her husband found the lakefront property they decided to build their dream home on. “He was flying back on a business trip from Florida and stopped at the Pell City Airport to look at property,” she said. “He rode around with a Realtor and ended up buying it that day.” The Armisteads were living in Raleigh, N.C., at the time and moved to Pell City in April 2007. They lived in a condominium while building their home, which was completed in about 15 months. The 6,100-square-foot house is two levels, with a master bedroom suite and guest suite on the main level and two bedrooms and baths downstairs, where there’s also a full kitchen, billard room and den. The style is English cottage with a flair, the exterior is a mix of light brick and shingles with gables dotting the roofline. Intricate landscaping created a curved stairway to enter the grounds, with a wall emerging from the stairs that circles around to the side of the house. A stone walk leads to the front entry, where arched double wooden doors open into a wide

foyer. To the right is the formal dining room, painted a subtle tan with coffered 14-foot ceilings. Trim is white, as is the layered crown molding used throughout the house. A round oak dining table is set for four, and chairs are upholstered in burgundy fabric, which is pleated at the corners. Warm wood floors are topped with an oriental rug in tones of burgundy, gold and navy against a cream background. An ornate sideboard holds pieces of cutglass bowls and vases, some are family pieces collected through the years. A corner hutch with an arched top enhances the arched entries into the room. Pieces of Mrs. Armistead’s collection of glassware and tableware are displayed in the hutch. A panel of broad windows across the front wall repeats the arches, adding to the spacious feel of the design. An elegant floral arrangement repeating the colors of the rug is used on the dining table, where, overhead, a chandelier fitted with tear-

There’s a full wet bar and a polished nickel vessel sink, and countertops are black-and-tan-flecked granite. There are plenty of cabinets for storing glassware and tableware and counter space for serving. The pantry offers entry into the grand room, as does the foyer, where beams recovered from a mid-1850s dairy farm are used in the vaulted ceiling. The six beams were found in Lebanon, Ala., and were covered in white lead-based paint. The Armisteads’ builder, David Dean, said the beams weigh about 600 pounds each, totaling about 4,400 pounds altogether. Mrs. Armistead found the beams and knew they would have a signifi-

The grand room opens into the dining area that joins the kitchen, where floor-to-ceiling cabinetry is in the same antique finish as that in the grand room. The cabinetry includes coverings for the refrigerator and dishwasher, blending them into the same wall design. The dining area features a square oak table set for six, but it has five leaves and can be fitted to seat 16. The table is an old family piece, and next to it is Mrs. Armistead’s mother’s bookcase where tableware and other collectibles are placed. There’s a three-sided work island topped with acid-washed granite in flecks of black and beige, polished to a high finish. Four wooden barstools painted in red are used on one side of the island, designed with curved edges with black leather seats. The work island also offers an additional sink area for preparing food and a food center, much like a built-in food processor, that Mrs. Armistead enjoyed having in her home in the 1970s. “I just did some research and found out I could still get one,” she said. The microwave is tucked underneath the island, and double ovens are placed along an adjacent wall. The stovetop features a handy “pot filler” for putting water into boilers without having to

go to the sinks. Over the work island hang a large pair of twin chandeliers made of metal and adorned with crystal teardrops intermingled at the top and bottom. Drawers in the kitchen are self closing, and “subway” white porcelain tile is used as a backsplash against the wall. A wall on the other side of the kitchen holds more cabinets, a floor-toceiling pantry for storage. Cabinets in the home were custom made by Ben Spradley Cabinet Company. The back side of the grand room offers entry to a large screened porch, with floors done in stone and another stacked-stone fireplace. The room is furnished with black wicker, covered with bold red-and-white-striped cushions. Lampshades are red, accentuating the overall color scheme. There’s a “widow’s walk” ceiling effect, with windows that automatically open and close with the touch of a control pad inside the grand room. Just off the screened porch, a side door leads to an outside sitting area, and a spiral staircase goes down to the lower patio. The master bedroom and guest suite are to the left of the front foyer — it’s entered through a pair of 8-foot-high double wood doors. The master bedroom is to the right, on the rear of the house, overlooking the waters of Logan Martin Lake. An oversized carved four-poster bed is used in the room, where a huge armoire houses a flat-screen television. A pair of “spider back chairs” are placed on either side of a side table and lamp, and bed coverings are rose with plump floral pillows in the same shades against a black background. The master bath includes a jetted tub set into patterened travertine tile in beiges and browns. The tub deck is in granite. A walk-in shower is also finished with tile. Two walk-in closets open from the master bath. The guest room is furnished with a four-poster bed covered with a topiary print spread in ivory and green. Gold and black finished lamps on both sides of the bed have beige silk shades and are placed on matching side tables. An ivory rug is placed under the bed at an angle. There’s an adjoining

bath with white cabinetry and travertine tile flooring. Between the master bedroom and the guest room is a bath off the hall. A porcelain vessel sink is placed in a custom-made distressed cabinet, and an oversized mirror hangs overhead. Matching wall sconces are used on each side of the mirror. The laundry room is just down the hall from the kitchen, which also leads into a large garage. Counter tops in the laundry room are flecked granite as they are in the kitchen, and cabinetry is off white. Flooring is ceramic brick, and beaded board wainscoting is used in the room. The same hallway that leads from the kitchen to the laundry room and garage is where the elevator and stairs to the lower level are located. There’s a telephone mounted in the elevator for emergencies, and a set of tiered stairs take you to the downstairs den, billiard room, two additional bedrooms and kitchen. The downstairs den opens to a ground-level patio, where there’s room for a seating area along with a bricked in space for a large grill. The downstairs kitchen has plenty of room for entertaining and is open to the adjoining den, where another stacked-stone fireplace is placed. The fireplace is double sided, usable from the den or from the billiard room, which are placed end to end. An arched bar and countertop separate the lower-level kitchen and den. From the lower patio, a wide walkway leads down to the water and boathouse. Landscaping includes native oak hydrangea and crape myrtle and other plants that enhance the setting. Bright knockout roses surround the downstairs patio. Landscaping around the front of the house includes a curved set of stairs at the edge of the yard, which extends into a brick wall surrounding the front and alongside the garage. A flagstone walk leads to the front door from the drive. Garage entries repeat the arches used throughout the home’s design. Ask Mrs. Armistead what she likes best about her lakeside home and she hesitates. “I really like it all,” she said. “But if I had to choose, it’s probably the screened porch. I truly enjoy that space.”

Lakeside Celebrations

Fun on the Fourth

Kids in strollers and wagons, even some driving toy cars were all part of the fun of the first Pine Harbor Independence Day 5K and Kids Bike Parade held in the lakeside Pine Harbor neighborhood of Pell City. The morning of July 4, close to 100 adults got in line for the 5K held at 8 a.m. along View Point Circle, and afterward, the children filed in for their own parade. There was a July 4 theme with decorated bikes and cars with about 40 youngsters and their parents taking their turn around the neighborhood. The event was such a hit that the neighborhood has already planned to repeat the celebration of Independence Day together next year. Caroline Wilder is pictured below with her mode of transportation for the occasion. By dusk, the celebration on Logan Martin continued with the traditional highlight – a spectacular fireworks show launched from Lakeside Park. Thousands turned out by boat and by car to see the display, a fitting tribute to such a special day.

Build your own boat Cardboard Regatta returns to Pell City

Story by Elsie Hodnett

Every year, hundreds of people gather on the shores of Logan Martin Lake for the annual Float ‘Yer Boat Regatta.

Participants test their ingenuity and craftsmanship, along with their paddling skills, in a race against the clock.

44

Each summer on the lake brings a wide variety of fun activities. One popular event in particular tests both ingenuity and craftsmanship. The challenge is simple: build a boat out of cardboard and duct tape and paddle it to victory. The Fifth Annual Float ‘Yer Boat Regatta continues that tradition under new leadership this year. “The Regatta is essentially the same, but we have moved it to August this year,” said Pell City Civitan Club President Blair Fields. The Pell City Civitan Club took over the Pell City Toys for Children program. The Float ‘Yer Boat Regatta proceeds benefit the Pell City Toys for Children Program, which helps provide toys and also badly needed clothing, shoes and diapers to needy children at Christmas. The Pell City Toys for Children Program helped more than 800 children last year. This year’s Regatta is on Saturday, August 29 at Lakeside Park. Boat check-in is at 8 a.m. with races beginning at 9 a.m. Boats may only be made from corrugated cardboard, duct tape, silicone sealant, construction adhesive, paint and paraffin wax. There are four divisions for the regatta: Adult Open, Youth, Business & Industry, and Church. Boats are divided into two classes. In Class I, boats must be propelled by paddles, oars, etc. Class I – Youth is the same as Class I, but participants must be 14 years of age or younger. In Class II, boats may be propelled by paddle wheels or sails. Boats in Adult and Youth categories may have up to two occupants, and boats in Business & Industry and Church categories may have up to eight occupants. All boats and teams will be pre-judged prior to the racing competition. All awards will be announced and presented at the conclusion of the regatta. The Ship Shape Award will go to the most creative boat design. The “Lovely Lady” Award will go to the prettiest boat in the regatta. The Team Unity Award will go to the most spirited and organized team (looks of the boat is not a factor here). The Team Attire Award will go to the most creative team costumes. The S.S. Minnow Award will be awarded to the most spectacular sinking vessel, however all components of the boat must be recovered for participants to qualify. First, second and third place will be awarded in all categories if enough boats make it across the finish line. Boats will run in heats of two boats per time trial. Each class will run separately, with the quickest time being declared the winner. In the event of a tie, both vessels will be declared champion. Judges reserve the right to combine classes if necessary, however the youth class will not be combined with the adult classes. Registration fees are $10 for individuals and $30 for businesses, industries and churches. Registration forms are available at the Pell City Civic Center, Fields & Gossett Realty, and the St. Clair County Economic Development Council. “We are excited about holding this year’s Regatta,” Fields said. “It is a very popular event, and we hope everyone will come out and have a great time.” For more information, call Float ‘Yer Boat Regatta chairwoman Jennifer Forman at 205-814-1440.

Entertaining Enviornment Story by Katherine Poythress Photos by Brian Schoenhals Most people envision kitchens indoors, but lake home owners like Johnny and Cindy Grimes have maximized their lakeside time by installing outdoor kitchens for entertaining and even everyday use. Walking around the Grimes’ house to the back pool patio overlooking the lake, it feels like entering a luxuriant vacation resort. The setup is open on three sides and includes a long bar stretching across a sheltered cooking area, with bar stools, Corian countertops, a wealth of cabinet space, and wood paneling sealed with a marine varnish to help the outfit survive the elements. Inside the cooking area, an industrial-sized Viking grill takes the visual spotlight. It can do most cooking jobs, but for those it can’t, a deep fryer sits in the counter next to the grill. On either side of the cooking area, above the doors to the control room and the bathroom, sit wall-mounted televisions – particularly handy for football season, Cindy Grimes said. XM Radio is piped in through the surround-sound system installed under the roof. “We entertain a lot, and having everything out here makes clean-up so much easier,” she said. “Not everybody’s in the house, and everything we use out here we

Every room in the house can pretty much throw away.” In their last home, the couple had a fullfledged outdoor kitchen, but that clean-up was a little too involved for carefree outdoor entertaining, so they nixed the outdoor refrigerator, microwave and stovetop when they designed their second outdoor cooking area. The refrigerator they tucked away in a control room next to the cooking area. The Grimes’ did design an easy-access full indoor kitchen, just steps away from the area used for grilling, smoking, frying, eating and entertaining. Grimes said for any given party she and her husband throw, they can have anywhere between 10 and 100 people there, so the ability to expand the necessary entertaining area in the virtually limitless outside space also proves a boon to the social couple. “This is the house everyone comes to,” Grimes said, attributing that to its entertainment value. She has worked to make the lakeside pool area not only functional, but also attractive, with a flagstone sidewalk leading from the driveway to the back patio, and tiki torches lining the way. Thatched umbrellas shade some tables

Every room in the house by the pool, only a few feet from the outdoor bar. “My family calls it the Grimes Resort,” Grimes said. The special “un-room” at the Grimes home is a getaway not just for their guests, but for them as well. Johnny, the enthusiastic chef in the family, can fire up the grill and cook food to guests’ orders, serving them while enjoying the lake atmosphere. The Grimeses first came up with the idea to install a poolside kitchen several years ago when building their previous home in Eagle Point. “At the time, nobody did plans for outdoor kitchens,” Grimes said. “We had to come up with our own.” She said they improved on their ideas with the new house and are thrilled to have an extension on their home that they can use at least eight months out of the year in Alabama. The secret to enjoying the outdoor cooking area is to minimize the number of appliances outside and make the ones you do have count, have a heavy-duty cover for the grill, and don’t store anything outside that smells like food. The abundance of cabinet space is great for other things like utensils, drinks and napkins, Grimes said – just not food.

Inside one of Logan Martin Lake’s newest developments

The Yacht Club Story by Chris Norwood Photos by Bob Crisp

Progress is continuing at the Logan Martin Yacht Club, with the first set of townhomes only 30 to 45 days from completion in late July. “The pre-sales are being completed now,” according to Robby Robinson, one of the developers and co-owner with Gary Yates. “They’re 3,000 square feet, ceramic tile, granite countertops, custom cabinets. Each has two balconies that both look out on the lake and all stainless appliances, refrigerator, microwave and stove. The back is all glass with just a railing, so you have a totally unobstructed view of the lake. And each one has a large single-car garage.” They also include an elevator and four bathrooms. The homes are selling for $495,000. The entire development boasts a beautiful view of Logan Martin Lake

There will be a total of 36 townhomes when all phases of the development are complete. The first building, consisting of six units, has already been sold except for the model. The development also includes more than 200 condominiums of up to 1,600 square feet. The condo model is complete and open, Daniels said. The condos come in a variety of sizes and layouts, including one-, two- and threebedroom models. “The condos are fee simple and include four parking spaces and access to the pools,” Robinson said. According to the development’s Web site, construction began in January 2009. “In addition to the Cove (condos) and the Bluffs (townhomes), executive 5-acre lots are available for custom building at the Ridge, and acre-plus sites are available at the Estates.” Like many residential development projects, The Yacht Club was hit by the recent financial troubles, but “we’re seeing a definite improvement now,” according to Daniels. “Like I said, the first building is sold out, and we’ve seen an increase in traffic and sales recently.” Robinson added that two more homes had already sold in the second phase as well.

with the mountains near Talladega in the background. The first set of boat slips are in, and there will also be a children’s play area, five or six grills, a business center including a mortgage company, and a convenience store all within one tenth of a mile. There will be a total of five pools, including an Infinity pool, which recently opened, and tennis courts. One of the most interesting aspects of the development is a 30,000-square-foot club house, which will accommodate 450, and a wedding chapel (currently under construction) seating 220. “There is an activity area with a full kitchen, and the whole thing will be owned by the homeowners,” Robinson explained. “That will provide an additional revenue stream, since the homeowner’s association fees are so low. The fee is only $150 per month, and the budget is $850,000. But a big wedding could bring in as much as $2 million alone. All that would go straight to the association.” According to associate partner Melissa Daniels, the townhomes have been sheetrocked and landscaped, with shrubberies already in place. “And the first pool, the Infinity pool, is now open, with a fantastic view of the lake in the background.”
