From the editor…

A view of Goat Island

Nameless no more The new goats on Goat Island shall be nameless no more. The votes are in, and by an overwhelming majority, Lakeside readers — those who voted, anyway — chose names suggested by Lavonne Brown. They were not Lavonne’s first suggested names, however. In her first email, she didn’t realize that the new goats were all female and proposed naming one of the goats in honor a favorite uncle. “I suggest for a male ‘Jabo,’” she wrote. “That is my 90-year-old uncle’s nickname, and he has raised a few cows and goats in his time. He would be proud! His real name is Sidney, which would work for either gender.” Upon learning that none of the goats was male, Lavonne sent a new list appropriate for the nanny and her two daughters. She didn’t choose names at random, but rather for their meanings: Sydney (for the mother), meaning “wild island.” For the daughters, Sophie or Sophia, meaning “wisdom;” Shirley, meaning “from the bright meadow and sunny clearing;” Sue, meaning “Lily;” Su or SuSu, meaning “humble, a fair maiden;” Sara, meaning “princess;” Samantha (Sam), meaning “the listener.” “This has been fun,” Lavonne wrote back in June. “I cannot wait to find out their names.” Some of the other name suggestions also came with explanations, sometimes touching, sometimes funny and always thought-provoking. Larry Phillips suggested naming the mother goat Lana, from Hawaiian, meaning “afloat, or calm as still waters.” He offered Piper for the elder kid, “as in Piper Cub, for the proximity to the Saint Clair County Airport.” For the younger kid, Phillips proposed Nixie, “from German, meaning little water sprite.” Allene Day thought golf names appropriate for the goats: Birdie, Bogey and Divot. Margaret Seay offered the chicken-inspired Bojangles, Zaxby and Popeye. I’ll admit, these made me cluck a little. Julia Funderburg didn’t explain her choices of Sally May, Amelia and Chloe Anne. Alan Lindsey’s proposed names have some logic: Nannie for the 4

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - August 2011

nanny goat, Casper for the white kid and Oreo for the black-and-white kid. Carsa Harris agreed that the mother should be called Nannie, but offered Petunia and Kid Scruffy for the two daughters. Paula Clark liked Kid Scruffy for the younger kid, but decided the older sister should be called Blondie and the mother Mama Goat Gruffy. Jay Jay Huffstetler, who just this summer moved into his new lakeside home, said his family has made friends with the goats. His suggestions reflect the goats’ personalities, he said: Mama Goat, Molly, Kloey or Emmie’ the older, white kid, Blossom, Bandit, Kit, Ponce, Fawne or Tawnie; the younger, black-and-white kid, Pepper, Socks, Bandit or Chloe. “We’ve been out several times and have taken Cheez-Its to try and get to know the goats and their personalities,” he wrote. “They have just brought so much enjoyment to myself and our family and have become a highlight of get-togethers.” Susan Hood’s suggestions didn’t come with an explanation and didn’t need one. Itty for the mother, Boo for the white kid, and Bitty for the younger kid would make for an entertaining concert when calling the goats. Sabrina Stubbs, on the other hand, said exactly why she suggested Daisy, Petunia and Rosie: “That way, at least they will be named after something that smells better than they do. Just kidding!” All kidding aside, these are all delightful names for the new goats on Goat Island. It was fun hearing from some many Lakeside readers, and I hope the contest has made more people aware of the goats. The next time heavy rains threaten to flood the island, the rescue crew will scoot over from the mainland, climb up on the island and call … “Come here Sydney, Sue and Sara,” for those are the names you chose.

Traveling the Coosa Rowing

OVER Easonville

Surprises abound as a leisurely kayak trip takes our traveler right over the submerged city Story and Photos by DAVID ATCHISON

I’ve met Roman before, but for the life of me, why he was scared when I popped in to see him and his owner before I continued my trip down Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail, I will never know for sure. It was so odd and out of character for Roman. Animals, including Roman, are generally very accepting of me. But at this moment in time, the huge Great Dane with the lovable disposition was visibly upset. He rambled back behind the counter of the Lakeside Package, next to his owner Blair Goodgame, and gave me the eye. “Ruff,” Roman said. Roman is a beautiful, friendly dog. After a few minutes, the 2-year-old Great Dane finally settled down and warmed up to me. The only thing I could think of was that Roman got a whiff of our dog, Scoot, which is a male border collie, and got a little uneasy. Scoot was all over me that morning before I left the house, so it was as simple as that. Blair was about as surprised as I was at Roman’s reaction to me, but the 170-pound dog finally calmed down and even posed for a few pictures. Blair, an Auburn graduate, opened Lakeside Package next door and in the same complex as her Blair Goodgame and her Great Dane, Roman, pose for a picture.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail.

“Business is great, it gets better every weekend. We don’t know what it’s going to do when the lake season ends, but we have a lot of locals to come in, so we should be all right.” -Blair Goodgame mother Cindy Goodgame’s business, Lakeside Landing RV Park & Marina. Blair said she opened her new “onestop shop for all your beverage needs.” “Business is great,” Blair said. “It gets better every weekend. We don’t know what it’s going to do when the lake season ends, but we have a lot of locals to come in, so we should be all right.” Blair grew up on the lake, working at the Lakeside Landing convenience store when she was just 13 years old. “I would help the cashiers on weekends,” she said, adding that 5 a.m. came awfully early during the summertime. Blair says she gets to sleep in a little later with her new business. Blair said she enjoyed skiing on the lake when she was a teenager and just going out on the water to relax. “There’s nothing else like it,” she said. I said my goodbyes to Blair — and Roman — and headed down to the boat

ramp at Lakeside Landing. The RV park and marina has almost 200 RV sites, but people can tent camp there as well, but it’s more suited for recreational vehicles. Lakeside Landing has a swimming area, piers and a boat launch and it was a great place for me to launch my kayak. I didn’t have a lot of time, but it was a nice excursion. I paddled down the river and around the bend when I finally recognized a home along the shore. It was part of the old Easonville community, which I was paddling right over. You see, the lake water now covers the town of Easonville. The 143-year-old town suffered the fate of progress. According to the book, “History of St. Clair County,” by Mattie Lou Teague Crow, there are three stores, one cotton gin, four dairies, one cemetery, two churches and “one of the best schools in the county,” now underneath Logan Martin Lake. This was the area I was paddling and couldn’t help but think about the old town and what it would look like if you could magically drain the lake to take a peek. Of course that won’t happen, and besides I enjoy the recreation the lake has to offer. Other people like Anderson Brown and David Burton, both of Birmingham, also enjoy the lake and what it has to offer. As I was paddling along the shores of Catatoga Estates, I met the two anglers who were fishing from the bank near U.S. 231.

“I’ve won a lot of tournaments out here,” Brown said, as he cast his fishing line across the water in hopes of landing a bass. This is one of Brown’s favorite spots, and he has fished there for almost 30 years. “I fish for bass and crappie, sometimes blue gill,” Brown said. “Yep, I’ve been fishing a long time here. This is where they spawn. I caught a 7-pound bass right here, fishing off my boat.” Brown also enjoys just fishing from the shore too, when he doesn’t have a lot of time. Burton, Brown’s friend, said the Birmingham angler is a fanatic about fishing Logan Martin Lake. “If he gets a day off work, he’s down here,” Burton said. Brown allowed me to paddle past him through a tunnel that crosses underneath U.S. 231. On the other side of the tunnel, the water opened up into a large grassy cove. I was thinking to myself if an angler fished early morning around the grass here with a top water, weedless, plastic frog, they would probably land a bass or two in that cove. It just looked like the ideal place for big largemouth bass. When I left the cove and headed back to the main body of the lake, I saw a pretty good size island. It appeared to be all grown up with vegetation, but I wouldn’t mind seeing if I could possibly explore the island, and maybe even camp there overnight, if possible. Maybe my next trip, I’ll check out the island. Who knows? So until then have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

I paddled through this tunnel that crosses under U.S. 231 from the main body of the lake. The passage opens up to a large grassy cove.

finds inspiration for the many different art forms he creates in his studio. The 27-year-old Talladega native has worked with collages, video, projections, sketches, paintings, and yes, even suntan oil, to create his artwork. “I really like abstract art; it surprises and enchants,” Burgess said. “That’s really important to me, letting something be and letting something happen.” Looking at Burgess’ work is like looking at art through a different lens. The context of the painting, sketch or projection becomes just as important as the content of the piece. “It’s not just about the content, it’s also about the framework and how I can get you to see it,” Burgess said. “I work very spontaneously.” Two of his 2009 pieces “9th Plaza” and “The Last Plaza,” for example, are collages that Burgess created from old Japanese comic books.

Burgess draws inspiration for his artwork from the many small models he creates. These are made of paper.

“I really like abstract art; it surprises and enchants. That’s really important to me, letting something be and letting something happen.” —Jason Burgess “I’m more interested in the background; I basically cut out everything interesting,” he chuckled. A much larger piece titled “How It Should Be” hangs on his living room wall and depicts a few people walking in a field with their backs turned to the viewer. The large painting was created with graphite, acrylic paint and suntan oil, something Burgess said has proved to be a challenging yet worthwhile medium to work with. “I really like the way it dries,” Burgess said “You can try really hard to make it do something, but it doesn’t.” Burgess said he had developed an interest in art by the time he got to middle or high school and that he often hung out the with artistic skateboard crowd.

“I had some really, really good friends,” Burgess said. “I’m really still good friends with them, and we’re all real artistic.” He went on to study pre-med and studio art at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “I had a really good teacher,” Burgess said. “The biggest thing I learned was the conceptual framework of art.” He said it was there that he developed a love for art and had the opportunity to think critically with other artists while discussing and criticizing different art forms. “The access to the library, that’s where I really found out I wanted to do it,” Burgess said. “They had such great stuff, and, I don’t know, it just kind of happened.

“You learn to take it more seriously, but you have to keep that balance with it because it is fun.” After a friend recommended a study-abroad program, Burgess said he saved up the money earned from working at a restaurant and moved to Santiago, Chile, for the six-month studio art program In addition to learning how to speak Spanish, Burgess said the program provided him with an amazing experience as well as a few friends from Germany. After a quick trip to Los Angeles after he finished school, Burgess returned home and helped renovate the family’s lake house with some of his childhood friends.

Above: Burgess also finds his inspiration from his travels to Berlin, Germany, and from the lake that surrounds his studio. Right: “Untitled Triptych,” 2010, 56”x36”, suntan oil, graphite, oil paint and enamel.

He also took some time out to work on his art in his studio on the lake. “It’s so good for working and concentrating,” Burgess said. “Something about being next to the water is so, so nice.” Burgess said soon enough he wanted to study art somewhere else and reached out to the German friends he met in his program in Chile. “I basically got in touch with my friends and asked ‘can I come over?’” Burgess said. “I had known Berlin was a good art city, a great city to 16

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - August 2011

make art in, really.” After taking some time to save the money for the trip, Burgess hopped on a plane to Berlin and got to experience the exciting art scene taking place in that historic city. “It was chance and a little research,” Burgess chuckled. While in Germany, Burgess was contacted by Anniston artist Pat Potter who had been commissioned by attorney Donald Stewart to work on a memorial installation at the First United Methodist Church in Anniston. “She asked me if I could come back and work on it,”

Burgess calls this piece “Untitled (Before the Last Two Disasters),” 2010, 10”x18”, graphite, suntan oil, and enamel.

“I like living in the city and the country. It is so, so relaxing.” —Jason Burgess Burgess said. “We looked, brainstormed and built a model of the space. “It was great; it was such an awesome project to do.” The memorial project, which was finished in early July, consisted of largescale metal pieces suspended in the air with wires and lights set up for a shadowing effect. Images and video that Burgess created will be projected onto the large metal pieces for an illuminating visual effect. “It’s more about the way you use a projector and experiment with it,” Burgess said. “It’s dynamic; it can be seen in many different ways.” Names of individuals associated with the church will soon be engraved 18

onto thick Plexiglas below the suspended metal pieces to complete the memorial project. Burgess said although painting is his first love, he was happy to take on a new challenge with the memorial project and flex his muscles in a new art form that combined his love for projection together with classic art concepts and architectural skills. Burgess plans to continue expanding his horizons geographically and

artistically, and would like to spend his time between his home on the lake, Europe and Los Angeles. “Where you live really influences you,” Burgess said. “I like living in the city and the country. It is so, so relaxing.” When Burgess is at home and has time to put his feet on the ground, they are usually by the lake, where he finds time to relax and re-emerge with the next big thing on his artistic path.

‘Butts & Guts’ Get your moves on, add some music for motivation, bring in expert instruction and you’ve got

Zumba on the Lake

By Laura NATION-ATCHINSON Photos by BOB CRISP Do some planks and scissors. Throw in a couple of sets of squats and a few mountain climbers. After that, add some merengue and salsa with some other fancy footwork and you’ve about got it. Oh, there’s music, too, from hip hop to Latin and disco. And there you have it. It’s called Zumba on the Lake; that’s the part Zumba instructor Nicole Anderson takes charge of. But there’s more. The planks and scissors and mountain climbers, that’s the part called Butts & Guts, and it’s done under the watchful eye of personal trainer Justin Hogeland. Put it all together and it’s a total workout that takes care of cardio, toning and shaping all at once. They got the idea to hold the sessions after meeting and finding out about each other’s specialties, Hogeland said. “It just seemed like a good fit,” he said. Hogeland is a professional physical therapist, so 20

becoming a personal trainer was a perfect fit. Anderson is a real estate agent by profession, but an interest in health and fitness led her to try Zumba and once she did, she was hooked and decided to become an instructor. “Zumba has really become popular, so I decided to approach Nicole with the idea,” Hogeland said. “I figured with her knowledge of Zumba and my knowledge of core training, we could come up with a good workout that would be a hit with people.” And since Hogeland and his wife, Valerie, live on Logan Martin Lake, the place they chose for the classes was Hogeland’s spacious lakefront property. Now, two Saturday mornings a month, people pile into Hogeland’s yard, line up and go at it for at least an hour. Hogeland and Anderson intersperse the different workouts. There’s about 15 minutes of Zumba, then about 15 minutes of Butts & Guts, and the pattern is then repeated. The classes started in April, and usually 20 to 30 peo-

Anderson and Hogeland are quick to point out that experience isn’t necessary for participating in Zumba or Butts & Guts, but checking with your doctor is a good idea to determine the level of exercise that’s best is a good idea for anyone. “You don’t have to be able to dance to Zumba,” Hogeland said. “This is a learning class, and Nicole is a great teacher.” With a tap on her boom box, Anderson starts the music and the feet start moving.

Anderson, right, leads a Zumba session. Zumba and the Butts and Guts sessions are interspersed.

And the smiles break out, too. That’s part of the reason Anderson got addicted to Zumba after trying it at Starzz Performing Arts Center last summer. “The time just flies by,” she said. “I have found it hard to stay dedicated to the monotonous task of going to the gym in the past. Zumba’s upbeat music and use of dance moves with high energy keeps me so focused on what I’m doing that I am sweating it out before I even realize it.” She’s quick to point out that following her exact steps isn’t always necessary to get a good workout. “Just as long as you keep moving, you’re going to get exercise,” she said. 22

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - August 2011

Now, she teaches classes in Pell City and Talladega

There are certain moves designed to work specific parts of the body, but learning the steps and movements comes together with a little practice, she said. There’s lots of smiling and laughing during the Zumba parts of the workout. The moves themselves, things like rolls and what some call the “chicken dance” are enough to make anyone laugh. Plus, the high energy music is a great motivator. When Hogeland takes over with Butts & Guts, the demeanor changes a little. This is when the “ooooohhs” and “mmmmphs” come out when Hogeland is asking for “just 20 seconds more” holding a plank stance or doing a scissors move. But there’s laughing, too, especially when someone doesn’t have the “holding power” yet and plops down on the grass. But that, too, just takes time, Hogeland assures, and strength builds gradually. Anderson has the same advice for those new to Zumba. “I would say to beginners, don’t quit after the first class,” she said. “Muscles have memory, and they will learn all the moves as you continue to do them. I have improved greatly in just six months.” All Zumba instructors differ in their own flavor and style, so Anderson suggests trying several.

Hogeland’s Butts and Guts workouts involve moves like planks, scissors and the mountain climb.

Lake resident Darryl Kiehl had his first Zumba on the Lake experience in early July. He said he’ll be back for more.

“Go to as many different classes as you can,” she says. She also has evidence that Zumba “works.” “My Talladega class has lost over 60 inches combined in four weeks, taking two classes a week,” she said. The important thing about “Zumbaing?” “Just have fun,” she advises.

Fifty-eight-year-old lake resident Darryl Kiehl showed up for his first session in June and said the workout was lots of fun. “It was a workout, but not too tough,” he said. “I really enjoyed the friendly spirit among the participants, and it was great to be outside in such a beautiful setting.”

Kiehl said he struggled a bit with some of the dance steps, but “That’s just part of doing something new.” Kiehl said he never thought of himself as an athletic type, he didn’t play sports growing up, and he said he always felt he was uncoordinated. “But I have found that regular exercise greatly reduces stress, clears my head, lifts me when I’m down and helps me keep a sense of personal power.” Kiehl is pastor for Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church in Birmngham and took part in the Chicago Marathon when he turned 50. He plans to repeat the marathon when he turns 60 next year. Anna Turner hooked up with Anderson in her Zumba classes taught at Starzz Performing Arts Center in Pell City and at the Pell City Civic

Center. When she heard about Anderson’s plan with Hogeland, she was “in.” “I love Zumba,” she said. “It is always so much fun and so rewarding while trying to lose weight and tone up.” Turner said she doubted she would ever miss another Zumba on the Lake. “It’s an awesome workout, incorporating Zumba with the Butts & Guts workout,” she said. Her very first Zumba experience left her feeling that the workout wasn’t for her, but Turner went back and is now committed to it. “I felt at first I wasn’t coordinated enough,” she said. “But now I don’t know what I would do without it. It just takes a little time and practice. Once you get the basic moves, it’s nothing but fun from then on.”

he said. “And that’s true, no matter how old you get. It’s true even if you have physical limitations. Then, wonderful new things may be inside you, the results of new insights or new information. I can see demonstrable evidence of the fact that I still can set new goals and succeed at new things and that I can expand my life.”

Plus, Turner said she has lost 10 pounds already. Sonia Dale, former principal for Kennedy Elementary School in Pell City and now regional school improvement coach and district grant coach for the Alabama Department of Education, said she had been taking personal training sessions with Hogeland before the Zumba on the Lake program started. She went with her daughter to some Zumba classes while visiting in Georgia and said she really enjoyed the workout. So Dale naturally signed on for Zumba on the Lake, she said. “I love to dance, and Zumba is a fun way to work out,” she said. “The time goes by fast, and you have worked up a sweat before you even realize it.” Dale said for her, middle age means trying to work harder to stay fit. “As I get older, I realize that I need to work hard on my muscle tone and fitness, and Justin has really pushed me with the Butts & Guts,” she said. “I am much stronger now and have much more stamina. Adding the Zumba helps me change up the exercise routine.” For Kiehl, working out and staying fit is also about his outlook on life, and it’s inspirational, as well. “I think it’s mostly about seeing that there are wonderful new things to experience, no matter how old you get,”

Lakeside Living in Style

Like the photos in their entrance hall, every season brings beauty at the home of Annie and Frank Wallace The previous owners built the home to be their forever home — then they moved. “They built it to meet all their needs, which was wonderful,” said Annie Wallace, who now owns the home on Eagle Point Lane in Pell City with her husband Frank. The challenge to the Wallaces was to arrange the house — and all their stuff — to fit their own lifestyle. “We have been married three years, so we had to blend 30

all our things. We mixed his things and my things.” Frank jokingly says most of his things are in the basement and garage. He said a few pieces even made it to the curb. Annie begged to differ, pointing out in the kitchen that the Blue Ridge dishes were his. They fit in nicely with her collections of baskets, china and crystal, and said she created a mixture of their things. “I just mixed it all up, and this is what we got — a mix-

ture,” Annie said. “It worked well; we enjoy it. It’s probably not like anything a decorator would do, but it’s our home so we put things in it that we love.” Upon entering, a step to the left will lead to a hallway with a powder room. Annie struggled for two years with the decision of how to decorate the hall wall. She finally thought of a unique idea: She took pictures of their garden through the different seasons, printed and framed them. Now the hall

is decorated with spring, summer, fall and winter pictures of their garden. The master suite, the living area and the kitchen are on the main floor. From the main entrance, the living area is to the right, with the kitchen on the left. Three rounded archways lead to the kitchen, enabling Annie to prepare meals and entertain guests at the same time. She says the kitchen is her favorite room of the house. “We also have an elevator, so this house is perfect. You could live here until you got old and got ready to go see Jesus, really. It’s perfect for that.” —Annie Wallace

A creative piece of art spelling out the couple’s last name.

“We love the openness,” she said. The home has 10-foot ceilings upstairs and 9-foot ceilings downstairs. All corners of the house are rounded, and it has many “pocket doors,” which slide between the walls rather than swinging. The home is handicapped accessible. “The halls are wider and the doors are wider, everything is so big,” Annie said. “We also have an elevator, so this house is perfect. You could live here until you got old and

got ready to go see Jesus, really. It’s perfect for that.” The Wallaces have been living in the home since 2008 and have only made minor renovations. One of those minor adjustments was window treatments. Annie, not being a fan of curtains, added white shutters to all the windows in the home. One other modification was adding an island to the kitchen.

“We spend a lot of time out here in the spring and summer. It’s so beautiful. We sit out here in the mornings and have our coffee and our devotions and just enjoy all the creation that God’s done for us. It’s so beautiful.” —Annie Wallace The Wallace’s back porch is fitted with relaxing rockers and is filled with potted ferns. It is one of many places in the house for enjoying a perfect Logan Martin view.

“The man that did the original cabinets here, Randall Stewart, he came and did the island for us,” Annie said. “He put that in and did several things to the cabinets in here. Being in the area, you can keep the theme going.” Downstairs is the grandchildren’s sanctuary. The Wallaces have three, and all live in Pell City. A full kitchen is downstairs, with a small living area, and two bedrooms with two full baths. Each bedroom in the house has a door leading to the backyard. The garage leading to the backyard has a fenced-in area for the Wallaces’ two dogs. “There’s a doggy door here so they can go in and out, and I don’t have to worry about them running off, although they do like to roam around the neighborhood,” Annie said. Like their pups, the Wallaces spend about as much time outdoors as indoors three seasons of the year. The kitchen gives way to the screened in porch which has a gas grill. Annie said Frank is the grill master and although he cooks with gas, he loves charcoal, too. “We spend a lot of time out here in the spring and summer,” she said. “It’s so beautiful. We sit out here in the mornings and have our coffee and our devotions and just 36

enjoy all the creation that God’s done for us. It’s so beautiful.” The decks give views of tall trees in the backyard with lake visibility not far in the distance. The screened-in porch leads to a sun deck which leads to a lower deck where Annie said they cook and grill most often. In the winter, the Wallaces said, they don’t use the porch as much because of the cold. Annie said the direction the porch faces enables the summer sun to come right out over the cooking deck, which she says makes for beautiful views in the morning. And in the afternoons, it’s not unbearably hot. “It’s like living in the woods but living on the lake — that’s why I love it here,” Annie said. “I’m from Florida so I’m not used to all these hills and mountains and all these trees. I just enjoy them so.” The view is made more spectacular by the steepness of the terrain in the backyard, but the trek down from the deck to the dock is mostly vertical. The Wallaces have thought of installing a lift. The previous owners left their dream garden, which

Annie says is set up like “little rooms.” Walking down the pathway to the dock, passing the rows of lantana and the magnolia tree, the Hoe House sits to the right. A sign indicating the shed is indeed the Hoe House is held up with a garden hoe. To the left of the shed is a fire pit and steps leading down to the dock. The house has a two-car garage downstairs and a three-car garage upstairs. There’s even an unfinished bonus room above the garage for which Annie sees plenty of possibilities. The bonus room has its own telephone line, its own air-conditioning system, and is similar to a loft. “Everything is perfect, we love it,” Annie said. “We have wonderful neighbors. We have made friends we hope we have for life. We love it here, and it changes so if you don’t like the way it is today, just wait around a little while and it will change with the seasons.”

Lakeside Dining

One of Edible Creations signature items on the bakery side is a rainbow of cupcake options.

Edible Creations Everything from meats to sweets

Need a birthday cake? Looking to grab a unique gourmet burger creation? Need a takeout meal on your way out to the lake? Need a caterer? Edible Creations in Eden has all that and more. Owner Tiffany Robertson said she and her husband have been doing business in the current location since March 16, but they are eatery veterans. “We had a place called Sweet Treats across from Avondale Mills for about a year and a half, up to about a year ago,” she said. Edible Creations is both a sit-down restaurant featuring gourmet variations on comfort food classics, and 44

a full-service bakery. Menu items on the restaurant side include various hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken salad, pimento and cheese sandwiches and pasta salad. The hamburger selection is not typical at all, however. One of the house specialties is the two-pound Heart Attack Challenge, which comes with a large order of fries as well. “If you manage to eat it all, it’s free and you get a T-shirt,” Robertson said. “So far, everyone that’s tried has ended up paying.” Other offerings include the Po-Po Burger, which has cheese on the inside and is topped with more cheese and bacon; the Firefighter Burger with jalapeno peppers; the Nasty Rustler, topped with a fried egg; and the Cowboy Burger, which is topped off with chili cheese fries. And then, of course, there are the desserts. Specialties here include an array of cupcakes and cookies, the renowned Ooey-Gooy Bar, and the Oreo Truffle. There is also a shaved-ice machine on hand. The Robertsons also provide full-service party planning and catering on any scale. “With the catering, we handle everything from small party trays to full-scale meals. We can just prepare the food for delivery, or we can provide a team to serve and then clean up afterward,” she said.

Robertson’s husband actually handles all of the baking. “People ask me if I do all that before I go to work. He does it all. Everything is made fresh, every morning. And the meat is always fresh, never frozen. I like to think we’re just a small place with a big taste. Nothing extravagant, just great food.” Most burger plates are in the $6.50 to $7 range, and the cold sandwiches are $6 or $7 dollars. Edible Creations is open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Walkins are welcome, and takeout is available. Outdoor seating is available for dine-in customers. The restaurant is located at 408 Cogswell Ave., in the Eden area of Pell City. For more information, please call 205-753-0267.

Lakeside Agent Spotlight

Loving The Journey Since becoming a broker in 2001, Sharon Thomas has learned to enjoy the process as much as the result By ELSIE HODNETT Sharon Thomas Her favorite part of real estate is the negotiation process. “I love to get a buyer or seller the best price they can get,” said Sharon Thomas, owner of St. Clair HomeTown Properties Inc. Thomas was the director for St. Clair County 911 when she decided to change careers. “There were several factors involved,” she said. Thomas said her father was moving to Alabama and wanted her in real estate to help with his rental properties. “My husband, Greg, was also attending real estate class with me, but chose a different career path,” she said. Thomas became a licensed real estate agent in 1999 and went to work for Realty South in Pell City. “Someone posed the question to me, ‘Why aren’t more real estate agents brokers?’” she said. “I wanted to become the best I could be at what I do — that’s why I became a broker.” Thomas was licensed as a broker in 2001. “Becoming a broker paved the way for me to open my own company,” she said. “Each company has to have a qualifying broker.” Thomas said when she opened St. Clair HomeTown Properties Inc in 2002, she started out as the company’s sole employee. “I would lock the door to go show properties,” she said. “Then one of my clients offered to help answer the phones. From that, it has grown to eight agents and one office employee.” Thomas said the business has been a growing process

through the years. “It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost 10 years now,” she said. Thomas, a graduate of the Realtor Institute, is an Accredited Buyer Representative and an e-Pro who effectively uses real estate technology to grow business. She is a member of the National Association of Realtors, the Alabama Association of Realtors and the St. Clair County Association of Realtors. She has served as president of the St. Clair County Association of Realtors and was chosen as the 2007 St. Clair County Realtor of the Year. Thomas is also a property manager for 32 rental properties in the St. Clair County and Lincoln areas. “I love real estate and don’t ever see myself doing anything else,” she said. “I enjoy working with people and helping them obtain probably the largest purchase they will ever make. We live in a different market now, and I pride myself on learning new and different avenues in the real estate market. When I opened my company, I had my eyes set on the end result. I have now learned that the journey is much more fun than arriving at the destination.”
