Santa a December Lakeside tradition
Lakeside’s David Atchison dressed for his other profession for this month’s cover. Photo by Bob Crisp
It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas around these parts, and Lakeside Living this month is no different. The cover is the magazine’s third December issue, and it is the third time for a return appearance by our very own Santa, David Atchison. When David isn’t busy as a news editor for The Daily Home or touring the Alabama Scenic River Trail in his kayak and writing about his adventures for Lakeside Magazine, he plays Santa. He’s not just someone who dresses up like jolly old St. Nick. He went to a Santa School to learn exactly how to be a bonafide Santa Claus. And every year about this time, we spot him in all sorts of places, visiting children at family get-togethers and other events, his ‘Ho, Ho, Ho’ attracting lots of attention. This year, we caught up with Santa David taking a break from the hectic pace of life, enjoying a little free time on the footbridge at Lakeside Park. Even if he didn’t hook the big one, he has us hooked on Santa as only David can portray him. It’s December. It’s Lakeside. It’s where you want to be.

ART BY THE WATER

For Spradley, the talent was always there Story by Brandon Fincher Photos by Brian Schoenhals Wayne Spradley had three goals as an adolescent. “In seventh-grade, my art teacher, she was my seventh-grade teacher, too, Ms. Armstrong, was asking everybody about what they were going to do with their lives, and I told her I was going to play football; I was going to be a sailor; then, I was going to be an artist. “She didn’t like my answer. She thought art should come first, but I’ve done all three with a steel mill in between for 22 years.” Spradley was captain of the Pell City High School football team during his senior year and joined the Navy right after graduating high school. But like Ms. Armstrong recognized way back then, most folks in Pell City and in the art community of Central Alabama know Spradley for his vivid and detailed paintings of landscapes and natural scenes. Spradley had formal training at the now-defunct Drawing Board School of Art in Birmingham, but his talent caught the eye of his elementary school teachers. He was lucky enough to have teachers to nurture his interest in art. “I had a lot of good support from Avondale Mills School, including

Ms. Iola Roberts, the one the (current elementary) school is named after. I’ve had some good art teachers. Iola Roberts had us in art all the time. I think I spent more time out of class in art than I did going to school.” In high school he got to take art all the way from ninth-grade to 12thgrade. He saw he could have some success as an artist when his art school set up a booth at a sidewalk art show in 1969. “I had five pieces, unframed, handmade mat, and sold all five of them

and made a total of $25. That set me on fire, so I went on from there.” The vast majority of his paintings involve natural landscapes and wildlife. He has had one of his paintings included as one of the top 100 paintings of the year in the prestigious Arts for the Parks competition seven or eight times. Two of his paintings were included in the top 100 paintings for the decade in the competition held by the National

Park Academy for the Arts. He also did the 1980-1981 Alabama Duck Stamp. Only a few years ago, he painted the Mississippi Wild Turkey Federation print and stamp. Spradley paints in both watercolor and oil. He prefers to use watercolor, but he likes the end results of oil. He likes painting because it gives him an opportunity to put his skill into action. “I enjoy the challenges of different subjects and creating a landscape. It’s very rare you find what we call ‘now’ art. You’ve got to put it together and create your art. The good Lord gives us a subject matter and gives us enough sense to put it together. I give Him all the glory and the thanks for it all.” Spradley has a few methods for coming up with an idea for a painting, one of which is by dreams.

“For instance, one time I dreamed I did this scarecrow with a crow sitting on his shoulder, and it won best of show, and I sold it. Well, I got up with that still on my mind, and I made me a scarecrow like I saw in my dream. I painted it with a crow on its shoulder; it won best in show, and I sold it.” He said he knows what to paint because it suddenly strikes him. He describes it as an idea running right up and hitting him in the face. Spradley managed to paint throughout his life, despite the pressures of a full-time job at Connor’s Steel Company and raising two sons, Donald Dwayne “Skooter” Spradley and Jerry Wayne “Buddy” Spradley, and participating in all of their extracurricular activities. Spradley said he was able to keep up because, luckily, he never slept much anyway, but he credits his wife, Pat, for being the person who kept the household in order and running, including helping with the promotion and showing of his paintings for so many years. And after those many years, he still paints every day. “When you do it for a living, you can’t wait for the mood to hit you.”
Spradley still works on his paintings every day.

LAKESIDE LIVING & LOGAN MARTIN HOMES, DECEMBER 2009
Exploring by kayak gives keen view of lake life I was met by Buddy Lee and Bella, two dogs owned by Lisa Baggett. I had tried to call Lisa to let her know I was coming over. She was allowing me to launch my kayak for my next trip down Logan Martin Lake, a breathtaking part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail. I was unable to reach her by phone and apparently I was in a dead zone when she tried to return my call. Lisa lives at Paradise Isle in Riverside and was walking her two dogs, I guess, waiting for me to arrive. We tried to coax the dogs into my truck so we could head to where I could launch my kayak, but Buddy Lee would have nothing to do with my truck. “I’ll just put them inside,” Lisa said. She did and hopped inside the truck as we headed toward the lake. “You can drive over there,” she said,
directing me to a spot where I could unload my kayak. We got out of the truck, looked around and I spotted a place I could drag my boat to the water. I decided to take my 14-foot recreational kayak on this trip instead of my 17-foot touring kayak I have used on previous excursions. The recreational kayak, an optional two-seater, has an open cockpit and is less restricting than the touring kayak, which has the cockpit enclosed with a skirt. My trip wasn’t going to be long, just three to four miles, so I figured the recreational kayak would do. The water was so calm that day. It was a gorgeous afternoon, not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was comfortable. After I untied my boat, I got it out

of the back of the truck and dragged the camouflage to the edge of water. I then started unloading the necessary equipment for the trip and putting them in the boat, things like my life vest, small cooler with water and a soft drink and of course, my paddle. I moved my truck back to the parking area, said my goodbyes to Lisa and headed off down river. It was a pretty stressful week for me, and as I paddled from the store, I told myself this is exactly what I need. I had no solid plans. I was just going to paddle downstream and enjoy myself. It was a little past noon when I headed out on the lake. I paddled past the mouth of Fishing Creek, which is really pretty, and headed to the next slough that was on my lake map. There wasn’t a name of the slough on the map, but I would later find out that the slough was called Walker Slough. It was named after the man who owned the property before Logan Martin Lake was formed. As I reached the mouth of Walker Slough, I heard all terrain vehicles in the distance. Across the slough was a group riding ATVs along the shore. The water had dropped considerably since my last trip on the lake about a month before. The lake was near its winter pool of 460 feet, about 5 feet below the normal, summer pool. As I turned up into Walker Slough, I saw a line of anglers lining the back of the slough. They were fishing with worms for catfish. As I sat in my boat, talking to the group, 20-yearold Bailie Dexter of Pell City hooked a whopper. Actually, the small fish was a bit short of being a whopper, but it was a fish. I got out of my boat and took a picture of Bailie with her fish. “I took it off,” Bailie said with excitement after getting the fish unhooked. She gently put the fish back into the water, to give it a little more time to grow. “Usually people fish for crappie and bass here,” said Roy Todd of Pell City. “I want it a little colder.”
16
Bailie Dexter of Pell City is all smiles with her catch.
He said crappie fishing picks up in the slough from the end of January to March. I could have paddled much further up the Walker Slough, but the water was so low, a high area of the slough prevented me from going farther. It was where these anglers gathered. “My daddy had me out here fishing ever since I was old enough to fish,” Todd said. It was something he passed on to his own children, who were out there fishing with him that day. Todd said I could probably paddle another half-mile, if the water wasn’t down.
LAKESIDE LIVING & LOGAN MARTIN HOMES, DECEMBER 2009
As I started to head back out of the slough, I saw Lynn Ervin and her dog, Ranger. She said the area where her lake home is located is in the Seddon Shores community. The slough forms a peninsula, and the land bends around to the right behind the neighbors across the street from here. Lynn was throwing a tennis ball out into the water and her white lab, Ranger, was doing what a retriever does. She said he’s quite a hunter and retrieves pheasant, dove and ducks during the hunting season. “This keeps him in shape,” she said. It looked like both of them were having fun. “I love it here,” Lynn said, adding that she and her husband live off the main river channel where all the boat traffic is, but you can look across the river. “I love it here during the winter and summer,” she said. Ironically, Lynn’s son, Chef Bruce Ervin, was featured in the August Lakeside Living. It’s a small world here around Pell City. After getting a few pictures of Ranger, I headed back to Paradise Isle. As I paddled back up stream, I heard a helicopter behind me. I turned around and spotted a low flying helicopter. I grabbed my camera and started snapping pictures. I wondered if the pilot of that helicopter could be Pell City Police Chief Greg Turley. I called him later that night to see if he had flown that day. Another small world example — it was him. I really enjoyed my three-hour trip down Logan Martin Lake that afternoon. It was very relaxing, and I look forward to my next trip, so until then, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Kids Kastle
A community creation Danielle Frye helps her daughter Emmy reach a handhold at Kids Kastle. More than 2,000 volunteers helped build the giant playground in less than a week.
18
LAKESIDE LIVING & LOGAN MARTIN HOMES, DECEMBER 2009
Story by Matt Quillen Photos by Bob Crisp A castle is not meant to be inviting. Historically, its walls were intended to keep people out. Its painted shields were a warning sign to intruders, a medieval “Keep Out” or “No Trespassing.” Its steeples and towers were built high for the lookouts and defenders of the castle. It was definitely not a place to have fun. But this Kastle is not like those castles. Kid’s Kastle has become a centerpiece of Pell City’s Lakeside Park, along the waterline of Logan Martin Lake. Since 2001, it has been the site of countless birthday parties, play dates and summer outings. The playground was built in less than a week that October. More than 2,000 volunteers came out to give their time and give their kids a place to have fun. “Everything inside the fence was built by local people, most of whom didn’t have a clue,” Mayor Bill Hereford said. “But we just came out here and volunteered. It was amazing, 2,300 volunteers in one week. We had to find things for them to do!” Michelle Seay, one of the organizers, said everyone worked long hours to get it done so quickly. “We started at 6 (a.m.) and worked until 10 (p.m.),” Seay said. “We had a food committee that fed all of these volunteers. They would have 200 in a shift; we would shift them through and give everybody a break. Then we would put them right back out there.” Hereford and Seay were two of the coordinators on the project. The idea came after a local woman saw a similar
playground in Decatur. The city began to move forward with fundraising efforts for the park. Residents bought pickets that circle around Kid’s Kastle bearing their names. Leathers and Associates, the company that designed the playground, talked to kids in the area to get their input. “They met with the children,” Hereford said. “The adults didn’t have anything to do with it. The children told the

architects what they wanted and what their vision was, and the architects drew the plans from the children’s ideas.” Kids can find an abundance of playground classics inside the Kastle’s walls. Swings, monkey bars, rope ladders and tire rides are spread out across the half-acre lot. The Kastle itself provides slides, bridges and plenty of places to explore. There is even a “Tot Lot” designed specifically for ages 2-5. Kids and parents got to enjoy a few warm, sunny November days at the Kastle. Terry Bishop Jr. brought his two children, Autumn and Tristan. “It’s always a nice place to go, take the kids, it’s a nice, clean environment,” Bishop said. “And (the kids) love it. It’s a nice park.” Autumn, 10, and Tristan, 7, said their favorite thing to do was ride the tire swing. They both liked coming to birthday parties at Kid’s Kastle and agreed they were a lot of fun. Shery Peine said she brings her two kids, Shannon and Zack, to the park regularly. Shannon, 8, has several favorites to play on. “I’ve been playing on the monkey bars and swinging on the swings and playing in the sandbox,” Shannon said. When asked what he liked to play on, Zack, 6, said, “the monkey bars, the swings and the sandbox.” Their mother said it was a wonderful park for her family. She even bought two of the fence posts herself to help support the playground. “It was right after Sept. 11, so it was a little sad (when it

first opened),’ she said. “But we were happy to get it built. The kids loved it, they would spend hours here.” At this Kastle, the walls are built high for climbing and for going down the slides or the fire pole. The hand-painted shields are merely for decoration. The steeples are vibrantly colored red, yellow and green, catching the eye and inviting you over. But Hereford said what makes Kid’s Kastle so special is it was made for the community by the community. “I love this, but to me, the greatest part was building it,” he said. “It brought people together. It was just amazing.”

Turn these girls loose with some ribbon and garland, something shiny and something sparkly, and you’re in for some very merry Christmas decorations. The Hollis girls – Cindy Luby and Karen Steed – of Pell City Flower and Gift Shop do some serious decorating, and when Christmas comes, the girls go all out with their efforts. “This is our favorite part of the year,” Luby said. “We love doing the Christmas decorations and arrangements.” Like every year, this year the shop is filled with ideas for decorating, using a mix of natural elements along with plenty of sparkle and shine.

Ornaments are both bold and delicate, and colors are traditional as well as innovative. New this year for people who like to send a message with their decorating are signs bearing greetings such as, “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Life is a Journey.” The signs are done in a shiny metal and are big. They can be used on a tree or wreath or just by themselves. Luby and Steed used them both ways, hung across both trees and wreaths and with garland. “I really love these,” Luby said. “They add a lot to the other decorations.” Trees are wrapped with fluffy ribbon and silky strands bearing stars and bangles and filled up with fat ornaments
Figurines like these can be places on hearths or cupboards or even used as ornaments.

and sequins. There’s a new trend with color this year, using a lighter shade of green rather than the traditional deep green, Luby said. Many decorations are being made in a lighter red as well, she said. “You will still see the deeper green and red, but this is an alternative that makes things a little fresher looking,” she said. Knowing when “enough is enough” on a Christmas tree is probably a matter of personal taste, Luby said. “For me, I just know,” she said. “I stand back and look, and when it all looks balanced, I know I’m done,” she said. Christmas decorating at Pell City Flower and Gift Shop means using candles, too, and Luby and Steed use them this year stacked together and in bundles to brighten up tables and arrangements. Luby said she likes to mix in lots of fresh greenery with decorating, using magnolia and pine to mix in with ornaments or other decorations.

Lakeside home a perfect fit for relocating family
There were criteria. Marty and Marcia Szpak had a number of things in mind when they moved south from Illinois 15 years ago. “We thought about the schools, a hospital, things like that,” Mrs. Szpak said. “But it was also the friendliness of the people, and the biggest thing for me was to be on a lake.” The Szpaks found all of this when they found their home on Logan Martin Lake in Talladega County, and have been happy there since. Mrs. Szpak is a native of Minnesota and her husband is from Chicago. They both say they like the laid-back lakeside living they have found on Logan

Martin, and so do lots of family and friends. “Everyone loves to come here,” Mrs. Szpak said. “Sometimes we feel like our house is really too big for us, but it allows us to have our friends and family visit and have plenty of room.” The Szpaks’ home is nestled in the trees on the lakefront just off Stemley Road, their street is a quiet one where cattle graze across the street, and the water sparkles on the other side.

The house is built facing the water, and the wide front porch is the perfect place to enjoy everything the lake has to offer. Whether it’s the boats gliding by or the wildlife that stops in, Logan Martin Lake offers plenty in the way of scenery from the Szpak’s home. Ask their favorite place for relaxing, and the Szpaks both say “the porch.” Inside, a central foyer leads into the

living room on the right and to the rear, the kitchen and family room. The master bedroom is on the main level as well, located down a hallway from the foyer. Stairs in the foyer lead to three upstairs bedrooms and two baths. In the living room, evidence of Szpak’s expertise in building furniture becomes apparent, as it is throughout the house. He’s a former industrial arts teacher, and

his talents pop up all over the house, as do Mrs. Szpak’s. She’s a former home economics teacher with many talents of her own. The living room is done with neutral wall color and light beige carpet, and burgundy couches are arranged in an “L” shape in the room. Szpak made the entertainment center from teakwood, as well as the coffee table and lamps in the room. A fireplace holds strands of cheery lights

that give the feel of a warm fire burning in the hearth, and broad windows look out to the water. The adjoining dining room shows off more of Szpak’s handiwork with a massive teak table he crafted, which will extend to seat 12. The table is rectangular and weighs in at 800 pounds, Szpak offers, and there’s a huge matching china cabinet that he made as well. All over their home are things friends and family have made or given to them, and in the dining room is one of their favorites, a wood carving of The Last Supper. Pointing to the painted tiles along a backsplash in the kitchen, Mrs. Szpak said it’s her sister, Jean Huisman’s, talents that were used to create the tiles. On one, there’s a couple standing together, the woman painted in with Mrs. Szpak’s signature auburn hair. “That’s supposed to be us,” she says, smiling.

The family room is the place for enjoying music and movies together.
Her sister’s husband, Norm, built the hutch in the corner of the kitchen. It’s painted white and used to hold lots more memories, things the Szpaks have collected from trips and gifts from friends. “I think that’s why I feel so warm in here,” Mrs. Szpak said. “We have so many things people have made for us or given to us. I feel like they’re all here with us.” Szpak made the table in the kitchen, and also lowered the oak cabinets when they bought the house. A large black and white cat trots into the room, and

Szpak offers the story of how the fellow became part of the household. He was out by the boat dock one day and thought he heard kittens. Sure enough, uncovering the boat, there they were, three tiny ones inside the boat. The mother returned for two, he said, but left one behind, and this kitten became the Szpaks’ household pet, “Hobbs,” named after the cartoon strip character from “Calvin and Hobbs.” A hallway from the back of the kitchen leads to the large

family room, where the Szpaks’ other pet, an orange wing Amazon parrot named “Peanuts,” lives. He’s never learned to fly, Mrs. Szpak says, and is content to stand on her perch on top of a large decorative cage, watching as Hobbs swirls around underneath. Peanuts offers up an occasional wolf whistle to visitors, along with barking out “here, Peanuts,” every now and again. The family room is where music and movies are enjoyed. There’s a baby grand piano that Szpak says he doesn’t play much anymore, and a music system and large-screen television. Szpak bought an authentic popcorn machine sitting on the wet bar counter for his wife one Christmas. “I love having popcorn when we watch movies,” she said. Seating is warm burgundy leather in the room, and Szpak hooked a wall hanging used in the room himself. The Szpaks designed it together, using a musical scales motif, and it hangs behind the piano. There’s space for an office area at one end of the room, where a computer screensaver shows a photograph taken by a granddaughter who’s an aspiring

photographer. The photograph shows a glowing lakefront sunset. In the hallway that goes out to the pool or garage is the spot Mrs. Szpak calls her “fish room,” where she’s arranged dozens of photographs from fishing outings on top of a fish net, the photos showing friends and family with their catches from Logan Martin and from other fishing trips as well. The pool is well used during the warmer months, Mrs. Szpak says, by them and many of the neighborhood children. The Szpaks have two daughters and a son, and there are nine grandchildren in the family. The family started a tradition of having “Camp Szpak.”
38
Every summer, one lucky grandchild gets to come to the lake house for a month, and the Szpaks do “camp things” together. Mrs. Szpak’s good friend, Donnelle Proctor of Talldega, comes and helps out, leading the singing and telling stories for the children. Going back through the foyer on the way to the master bedroom, there’s a hall table, made by Szpak, that holds some very special items he’s made as well. One is a piece of sculpture titled, “The Marciaska Topaz,” a carved marble pedestal holding a large topaz, Mrs. Szpak’s birthstone, and an inscription, “To the Angel I Married, Love Forever, Marty,” and the date, Christmas 2003.
LAKESIDE LIVING & LOGAN MARTIN HOMES, DECEMBER 2009
Szpak said he has no idea how many feet of train track are in his huge layout.
There’s also a large marble cross Szpak carved placed on the table as well. In the master bedroom is more of Szpak’s work. He made the bed and dresser, all carved in the same geometric pattern. A tall headboard uses inset pieces of walnut, as does the dresser, and Szpak made the side tables from oak. Mrs. Szpak said she asked her husband to design the tables with just enough room to toss a book underneath the top, and there’s a door for other storage underneath. The master bedroom has wide windows that look out to the water showing a sparkling reflection in the afternoon sun. Carpeting is light beige, and the bed is covered with a spread in burgundy with a beige and gold swirled pattern. There’s a large master bath adjoining, where a skylight is situated above two matching vanities.

Upstairs, there are three large bedrooms for company, and plenty of room for more of the Szpaks’ creative efforts. A pair of twin beds in one room are covered with handmade quilts, one in a “Bear Claw” pattern and the other, a pattern called “Delectable Mountains.” Mrs. Szpak worked on one, the other was made by a friend. On the wall over the beds, the quote, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away,” is lettered over a deep burgundy background. In a corner, a dress form holds a detailed Victorian dress made for Mrs. Szpak by a friend about 15 years ago. She wore it for re-enactment events and tours while working at a pioneer village when the couple lived in Illinois. There’s a hat and purse the friend made for the outfit as well. In a corner is an upholstered chair covered with a floral fabric, a piece Mrs. Szpak asked her mother for. Another bedroom is where Szpak put the expansive train track he built to hold his collection of O gauge trains. The track makes the perfect place for Mrs. Szpak’s extensive collection of Christmas Village pieces as well. But Mrs. Szpak said she’s through collecting the pieces, and laughs saying she has “plenty” of the pieces now. “I told everyone to stop giving them to me,” she said. On the bed in this room is a quilt made by Mrs. Szpak’s mother, Doris Kager, inscribed with the date, “1967,” and the initial, “D.” This room, too, is where Mrs. Szpak has a space for one of her current pursuits, designing and making greeting cards. Each is imprinted with a poem written by Proctor. “I just make them from scraps I have,” she said. After she started making them, she asked Proctor if she would supply some of her poetry for them, “and she just comes through,” Mrs. Szpak said. “I love them.” A third bedroom is where more memories are. There’s a wicker rocker that Mrs. Szpak herself was rocked in as a baby and a hand-stitched wall hanging of a bird dog her grandfather did while he was in a veterans’ hospital in 1938. And there is a wood burning of a retriever at work in
Marcia and Marty Szpak another piece her grandfather made. A runner used on the floor was made by a daughter, and a writing desk came from her parents’ home. The four-poster bed is a Shaker style, matching the same style dresser. The Szpaks say their move to Logan Martin was the right one, and they plan to be Logan Martin residents for good. “I think the Lord has just blessed us here,” Mrs. Szpak says, looking out at the water from the front porch. Ask if there’s a favorite thing offered from their spot on the lake, and she’ll say without hesitating, “the sunsets.” “We just really like the area.”

fry.” And Trott said he really enjoys fishing and providing the bounty for the fish fry. With an average attendance of 25-30 for each fish fry, the 50 pounds of Crappie goes fast. “We hold the fish fry at my place at ‘The Lodge,’” Pollard said. “The Lodge” came with the lot he purchased in Riverside, and is more than 50 years old. Roy Bannister said he has attended the fish fry for about three years. “I really enjoy these gettogethers,” he said. “You can learn a lot of things in a group like this.” Mike Williams, Pollard’s sonin-law, said this fish fry was held on his 47th birthday. “We mainly live in Port St. Lucie, Florida, but have a house in Riverside, too,” he said. “We love it here.” Williams said the fish fry made for a great birthday meal. And for dessert, there was homemade pound cake made by Sue Wall,

Lighting up Lakeside Park
48
Story by Meredith McCay Photos by Bob Crisp What began as a small fundraiser for the Toys for Children program utilizing Lakeside Park has grown into an annual event in Pell City. The Parks and Recreation Department is preparing for its sixth annual “Lights in the Park,” and the displays planned for this year should bring holiday joy to all who stop by. Civic center coordinator Nancy Crow said
local businesses are welcome to claim a spot at Lakeside Park to not only take advantage of some free advertising and possibly help raise funds for Toys for Children, but to also help families get into the spirit of the season. “Jason Jones always has Santa in his sleigh as part of his display,” Crow said. “Metro Bank sets up a gazebo and always has it lit. Local churches usually have a Nativity scene.

Fields and Gossett Realty have a house they are going to decorate and it will be very pretty.” Other ideas that Crow revealed for displays included Century Tel’s plans to have ice skaters, Alpha Insurance’s plans to decorate an old Studebaker and Aliant Bank’s display plans that include Mary and the baby Jesus. Also in the lineup so far for this year’s “Lights in the Park” are Union State, Wal-Mart, Four Star Building, Police Chief Greg Turley, New Life Assembly, Head Start, Coosa Pines Federal Credit Union, the Parks and Recreation Department, St. Vincent’s St. Clair, Computer Works, a karate school and more. Visitors should also look for a display including a Christmas tree, square dancers and possibly the Daily Home’s own David Atchison stepping in to help Santa visit all the good little boys and girls at this busy time of year
50
Crow said last year the park had about 20 displays, and she hopes to have a few more local businesses sign up this year to really bring holiday spirit to Lakeside Park. The formal lighting of the displays at the park begins Tuesday, Dec. 1, from 5 to 9 p.m., and that is when Crow hopes Santa might be able to make an appearance and donations can be taken for Toys for Children. Lakeside Park will continue to extend its hours throughout the month of December, with the last day of displays being Thursday, Dec. 31. While the displays are lit, people are welcome to drive through and view the displays or even get out and enjoy the park. “Families do occasionally get out and take pictures,” Crow said. “If Santa is there, it would be great to have people stop and visit the park while they enjoy ‘Lights in the Park.’”

Realtors see busy months ahead
Thanks to a rebounding economy and an extended home purchase tax credit, Brenda Fields of F&G Realty sees a market that is steadily improving, if still a ways from its historic heights.
Story by Chris Norwood Photos by Bob Crisp
As the debate about whether the economy as a whole has bottomed out continues, Realtors in the Logan Martin Lake area continue to be optimistic, even if the recovery may not be as swift as some would like. According to Rita Foster of ReMax in Pell City, the darkest days of 2006 and 2007 appear to be behind us. “According to MLS (Multiple Listing Service) numbers, from January to November in 2006 and 2007, the number of transactions dropped 25 percent, and the price dropped 5 percent.

From Page 52 Sharon Thomas of Hometown Realty says real estate prices around the lake are “inching back up,” while the number of sales is no longer in free fall.

“Then during the same period in 2007 and 2008, number of transactions and price dropped 9 percent each. Then in 2008 and 2009, number of transactions dropped another 9 percent, but prices only dropped 5 percent,” she said. “So we’re still moving, but things are a still a little sluggish. They’re hard transactions when you’re dealing with short sales and USDA loans. I’m hopeful that the new stimulus, which doesn’t just benefit first-time homebuyers, will help even more. Foreclosures did have an impact, and November is generally a slow month anyway. “But given all that, I know I have been awfully busy lately. We’re still working hard.” Foster also said that sales on larger properties were coming back more slowly, but “optimism is a key factor. You have to have confidence. There are a lot of good deals out there, and people are cutting prices all the time. I personally have had five properties reduced in a single week.” Historically, “in the majority of past years, property values here have increased,” she concluded. “You have to have a correction at some point. We had that, and now the high
end properties are starting to pick up again, especially since interest is so low.” Sharon Thomas of St. Clair Hometown Realty and president of the St. Clair County Realtors Association agreed. “Things are definitely looking up from this time last year. According to Thomas’ figures, a total of 80 lakeside properties had changed hands between Nov. 1, 2008 and Nov. 10, 2009, the most recent date for which statistics were available. This is the same number of transaction Thomas reported in May for the previous 12 months to date. “The (new homebuyers’) tax credit definitely had some positive impact, and I know of a couple of more people that tried to get the credit but didn’t make the deadline. And I think the new tax credit program is going to boost sales as well.” Prices for lakefront property are, Thomas said, “inching back up, although they are still not at the levels they

were in 2006 or 2007. I actually just sold my own lake house to a family from Birmingham that wanted a second home. We’re starting to see more of those kind of purchases now, too.” Vacation homes and second homes have always been important to the housing market around Logan Martin, and Thomas is confident this will continue to revive the area. “We’re still holding out a lot of hope that things will pick up even more next year than they have this year,” she said. “But you know, some things don’t change. People still want to live on the lake, and it’s still a buyer’s market. There are a lot of good deals out there, and people should come and take advantage of them while they still can.” Brenda Fields of Fields Gossett Realty largely concurred with Thomas’ assessment. “I think, in my opinion, things are definitely improved over this time last year,” she said. “Things are settling down, and people are more comfortable buying and selling than they were a year ago, when we were still on the down-swing. “We’re still not where we have been in the past, but I do believe we’ve pretty much leveled off.” The tax credit “definitely helped. Anything that makes a buyer more confident is a good thing, plus I think it helped a lot of sellers feel good enough to go ahead and place their properties on the market as well. We’re definitely seeing more business” since the new program was announced. As for price fluctuations, Fields said, she expected properties near the water to remain fairly stable. “The foreclosures impacted a lot more so the off-water properties. Waterfront property tends to maintain its value a lot more. And we’re also starting to see more and more people coming in, looking around, from out of state. “Florida and Georgia have been hit a whole lot harder than this area ever was in the last few years,” Fields said. “They really got hit hard. Overall, I think right now our area just has more to offer. “We have resorts; we have family farms; we have residential development, good business and an overall good location. It’s just a good area.”
