Artist employs Coosa roots in paintings From the editor… When I moved to Pell City years ago, I was always amazed at the number of artists that call the area home. Talladega and St. Clair counties seem to be an unrivaled colony of artists. Almost three years ago, when we launched Lakeside Living as a glossy magazine, I had the idea to start a regular feature called, “Art by the Water,” featuring local artists surrounding Logan Martin Lake from the two counties. Three years later, there has been no shortage of artists or mediums to feature each month, and it has become one of our most popular segments. In December, we featured Wayne Spradley, the nationally known watercolorist, and it brought back memories of my cub reporter days doing stories on his latest creation – many of which hang in places of honor all over the country. Locally, over the years, I have seen his work – many featuring water elements no doubt inspired by his growing up along the Coosa – in many a lakeside home or business. His work inspires us, makes us pause and reflect on the beauty of nature around us because he is able to capture it on canvas. Just as in the photo of his painting above, Spradley illustrates why a ring side seat next to the water is such a special and calming place. It’s January. It’s Lakeside. It’s where you want to be.

Michelle Seay, Joy Steed, Alesia Mitcham, Christy Minor, Susan Hutto, Jennifer Potter Hadley and Hannah Jones have started kayaking together on Logan Martin Lake.

Make most of lakeside living

Story by Carol Pappas Photos by Brian Schoenhals and Carol Pappas

There’s no mistaking them — a group of brightly colored kayaks gliding across the water on a peaceful Sunday afternoon. Their pilots dip paddles into the water — first left, then right, then left again — with synchronized precision. Within earshot distance, conversations and laughter are overheard from boat to boat, an occasional instruction directed at the novice in the group. At closer glance, members of the group are easily recognizable if you live in the area – a couple of judges’ wives, a teacher, a neighbor — just out for a Sunday ride. They call themselves “Mamas on the River,” according to Michelle Seay, who seems to be the leader of this

pack of kayakers. Weather permitting on Sunday afternoons, they “leave the babies with their fathers,” and head out on the open lake for a few hours of fun, fellowship and exercise. This group activity began with Seay training for a marathon. She needed some form of cross training, so she grabbed one of her children’s kayaks one day and off she went on a trek across the water that is now attracting more and more women to join the group’s ranks. “You can say it’s because of marathon training,” retorted her sister, Christy Minor, but she prefers to call it “recreational Mommy kayaking.” Minor has been kayaking for about three years, and once she tried it, she was hooked, she said. She hops in her bright red kayak when she gets a moment, puts on the earphones to her iPod and sets sail for nearby Goat Island, a landmark on the lake known for its inhabitants. Rounding the island and heading back to the house is her solo usual route. But on this day, she joined the group. An unseasonably

6

warmer December day found Seay and Minor along with Joy Steed, Alesia Mitcham, Jennifer Potter Hadley, Hannah Jones and Susan Hutto enjoying the scenery and the ride. It’s their time on the water. “The kids take over in the summer,” Hutto said. Steed — new to the group — said she was “glad they let us come.” Hadley, a Pell City native who was home for a visit from Nashville, became a recruit that day. “I got about a three-second lesson,” she said. Her sister, Amanda, is a real kayaker, navigating through rapids instead of Logan Martin’s relatively milder fare of ducks and anglers and an occasional wave. “This is not your sister’s kayaking,” Minor surmised with a chuckle. Although, the exercise benefits are duly noted by more than one in the group. “It works your stomach,” Hutto said. “It’s a good ab workout.” But the real value, they agree, is getting out on the water with each other. No kids. No husbands. Just kayak cruising on another mothers’ day out.

Lakeside living can be wonderful year round

Story by Matt Quillen Photos by Bob Crisp

For those who live on Logan Martin Lake, waking up to the peaceful waves pushed by a winter breeze is pleasing and serene to look upon. But step outside, and that same breeze blowing off the water could be a substitute for your morning coffee. The Southern winter is generally shorter and milder than most. But many waterrelated activities are not as pleasant with

Jack Frost nipping at your nose. Even the most ardent fishing and boating enthusiasts will shorten or cancel an outing if it gets cold enough. Swimming is completely out unless you’re a polar bear (or a member of their club). If you are looking for a change of scenery, a trip west to Birmingham may be the first thought for your social outing and shopping needs. But a trip east can serve those purposes, too. Talladega offers plenty of historic architecture for sightseers. The city has four districts on the Register of Historic Places.

Interest

In downtown, Talladega’s Courthouse Square contains many examples of architecture from the 19th century. A ride down the North and South Street historical districts offers a view of the homes showcased every year at “April in Talladega.” If higher education strikes your fancy, a look at Talladega College, founded in 1867, may be of interest. The noted Amistad Murals are a part of the history in Savery Library on the campus and welcome thousands of visitors each year. Heritage Hall Museum, featuring art exhibits all year round, is a destination point as well. Matehuala’s Mexican Restaurant, Café Royale or Tina’s Home Cookin’, all in the heart of downtown, offer a casual dining experience away from the typical restaurant chain. Talla Floral is a short walk away for the procrastinating romantic. Owner Keela Brown and her 33 years of experience can put together a bouquet in 10-15 minutes, depending on traffic. And tickets are on sale now for many of the upcoming events at the historic Ritz Theatre. “Talladega’s Indispensable

10

Cultural Asset” remains a homage to the art deco-style theaters of the 1930s. Ritz manager Tom Wofford said the festivities for the year kick off Feb. 13, with the Mardi Gras Gala. The night of food, drink and entertainment offers the “biggest Mardi Gras party around,” Wofford said. No trip to Talladega is complete without a little racing. The International Motorsports Hall of Fame, Davey Allison Memorial Walk of Fame and the Talladega Superspeedway itself provide all the experience of NASCAR, short of being “put in the wall.” Another 20 miles south will take you into the city of Sylacauga. “The Marble City,” as it is known, offers its own shopping, eating and touring delights. A trip to the Blue Bell Creamery can provide the sugar buzz to kick off the outing. The creamery offers a variety of ice cream flavors at the Country Store, and guided tours on how it is all made draw thousands from around the country. A short drive down Norton Avenue brings you to Pete’s Feed and Seed. Owner Lauren Eszes works to create a

relaxed atmosphere that offers the sights, sounds and smells of an old-time shop. More than just a place for farmers, the Feed and Seed offers gardeners, flower-planters, and pet owners a place to go. The shop also showcases artwork of the area from local artists. Antiquities like old farming tools and shelves from the Avondale Dairy further add to the atmosphere. If you are still in the mood for more history, the Isabel A. Comer Museum is your place. The museum offers a new featured exhibit each month as well as workshops and other events. A mainstay of the museum is the section dedicated to Sylacauga’s favorite son, TV star Jim Nabors. The Buttermilk Hill Restaurant and Bar offers “a truly Southern fine-dining experience. The white-tablecloth restaurant, situated in an old Victorian home, features items like seared petite lamb rack and blackened red grouper with a crabmeat beurre blanc on the dinner menu. These are just a few of the things Talladega and Sylacauga have to offer. Each has its own take on an all-day trip or an evening out. The two cities may lack in shopping megacenters and franchise eateries. But they each provide a unique history and atmosphere, without the winding interstate roads and traffic.

Riverside has big plans for old property 12

LAKESIDE LIVING & LOGAN MARTIN HOMES, JANUARY 2010

Story by Elsie Hodnett Photos by Bob Crisp The Town of Riverside continues to work toward the goal of offering area residents public lake access. “We are fired up about this,” Mayor Rusty Jessup said. “This is something the Council has been wanting for some time.” Jessup said the Council had been looking for waterfront property to purchase to provide a public park with lake access. After much searching, the town entered negotiations to purchase the old D&S Marina, located along Depot Street across from Town Hall. “We finalized the purchase of the marina on Dec. 23,” Jessup said. The marina property is a little less than two acres and includes three docks in need of repair, a convenience store, street-side and waterfront gas pumps, and more. “We received a $99,500 US Department of Agriculture grant toward the purchase of the marina, and the St. Clair County Commission helped with a big portion of the remainder of the $310,000 purchase price,” he

said. “The Town also took out a capital improvement bond, which can also be used for the purchase and renovations.” Jessup said he is most excited about partnering with the Alabama Scenic River Trail. “The Alabama Scenic River Trail has put together a trail that flows through the beautiful lands of Alabama and currently has over 631 miles of navigable river trails,” he said. Jessup said the Alabama Scenic River Trail is the longest one-state river trail in the nation.

“Our park is going to be a part of this trail and designated on their maps as a camping area and jump off/on area,” he said. Jessup met with representatives from the Alabama Scenic River Trail in December, including CEO Jim Feldman and President Fred Couch Jr. “They particularly like our site because of many reasons,” he said. “Our site will be off the main channel in a deepwater slough, will have facilities including pub-

Jessup said he thinks that opportunities for entrepreneurs will be available for kayak and canoe rentals, as well as camping gear, fish-

The community meeting is at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Riverside Town Hall. “We want to talk about how it will look and how we want to do renovations on the building itself, as well as piers and infrastructure,” he said. “Some have suggested, for example, that we build a green façade around the building to match or blend in with

Jessup said the Town recently signed a contract to apply for a $50,000 ADECA grant for renovations and construction to the marina, park property and restroom facilities. “The biggest expense we will have initially will be the public bathroom facility and pier and boardwalk construction,” he said. “We

are hoping that this ADECA grant will get us through that phase of the project.” Jessup said the town will likely begin some renovations once the property sale is final. “Our first priority is to get the boat ramp opening and functioning,” he said. “We are hoping to have it open as soon as the marina is ours, and shortly after that start work on renovations.” Jessup said the town should know if they have received the ADECA grant some time in March or April. “But in the meanwhile, we will be working on cleanup, pier repairs and a lease agreement with a vendor for the store,” he said.

RETURN TO PARADISE Attention lets family share private island retreat

said. “We have enjoyed a quiet, sleepy life here, and I was telling my friends I always thought I was a rather generic looking fellow, but that people had started recognizing me from the cover of the magazine. A few minutes later the waitress asked me if I was the island owner from Lakeside, and my friends could not stop laughing. We almost missed our quiet breakfast for a couple weeks there.” Laurie agreed that life has been different since the article, and that people will randomly say, “Hey, you’re the island people!” when they visit some of their favorite spots around Logan Martin Lake. But seeing how much enjoyment people have gotten from using the island is worth any fame the article brought the Regans personally. One thank-you note that showed up in the mail one

day expressed gratitude from a woman whose husband had offered to take her anywhere in the world for their 30th wedding anniversary, and she chose to visit the Regans’ island. She said their time spent on “Grand Isle” made them feel as if they had managed to travel thousands of miles for a romantic getaway instead of taking a day trip on their pontoon boat. Another note was left tacked to one of the palm trees the Regans planted to give the island a more tropical feel. The note thanked them for use of the island and the whimsy created by the treasure chest for young visitors searching for adventure. Perhaps the most romantic thing to take place on the island so far was the story of a man proposing to

his wife on Grand Isle. He had a candlelit table set up on the sandbar stretching out from the island so that he and his then girlfriend could dine in the water. He brought the boat around the back side of the island to surprise her with the romantic setting, got down on one knee and proposed right there in the middle of Logan Martin Lake. Of course, there have been times so many people have been enjoying the island that the Regans couldn’t even get onto their own property to have a relaxing day of doing nothing. Jim said he was having less than a 50 percent chance of being able to get onto his own island at one point during the summer. The Regans even threw a party where 41 people attended, and Jim was in the water turning more would-be guests away. “We’d go by and couldn’t get on the island,” Laurie said. “If someone is having a party, you hate to tell them to

24

leave.” But Jim seems to have solved that problem by adding four more tie-up posts to the island to allow more visitors to stop by while boating around the lake. In fact, some have just looked for the Jolly Roger flying above the island on a whim and the tiniest bit of direction. Jim said one family had decided to find the island on a hunch because their son had seen the article and begged them to find the island. Once they found it, the boy also had a bonus encounter with a “pirate” when he and his parents met Jim on the island. “The little boy asked me if I was a pirate, and I looked at his parents, and they were nodding their heads,” Jim said. “So I told him that I was, and then he told me his dad said I hung kids up by a rope from one of the trees on the island. I looked at the parents, and they were nodding their heads again. So I told him I did, but only the bad kids.”

LAKESIDE LIVING & LOGAN MARTIN HOMES, JANUARY 2010

Another family had looked for the island to allow their little girl a chance to go on a treasure hunt. When she realized she would have to leave soon, she wanted something from the island to remind her of her experience. The little girl approached Jim and asked him if she could keep a shell she had found on the island. Jim asked to see it and pretended to consider whether to give it to her as he watched her look of wide-eyed expectation. Finally, he said she could have the shell, and she gave him an exuberant thank you before running to her parents’ boat. The Regans continue to check on the island to see how the plants and trees they transplanted are doing and to make sure it is being well maintained. All the humans who use the island seem to be taking good care of it, but the geese using the island as a nesting site have caused some stress for Laurie. “The three pairs of geese nesting on the island are the most constant, prolific visitors,” Laurie said. “Jim reminds me it is great fertilizer, but I have tried everything from a plastic owl someone said would scare them away to fox urine and nothing has worked. If we could invent Goose-BeGone or something, we would really have it made.” Jim said the geese were so underwhelmed with the plastic owl that they let the Regans know just how distasteful they found the statue – right on top of its head. If any human visitors desire a brush with dangerous but fairly friendly pirates, the Regans are happy to oblige, and keep a patch and sword handy on their pontoon boat. These are called the “Boat Defense System” to help protect the island’s treasure if anyone seems to be getting out of line. The rule of the treasure chest on Grand Isle is simple: If you take something out of it, you have to replace it with

Jim Regan has added more places for boats to tie up.

something else. And visitors have been having so much fun with it that the Regans don’t recognize any of the items in the treasure chest anymore. If they could just find a weatherproof vessel that looks a bit more like a treasure chest than the current orange plastic bucket, they will be all set. “Everybody is so good to the island,” Jim said. “We want to keep it just like it is for a very long time. We had meant to do it, but someone put a Wilson volleyball out there. People bring their families there for cookouts, and we have all the supplies for that now. Visitors are protective of the island and passionate for it. We have a thousand eyes on it who wouldn’t have stood for anyone trashing it this summer. This has been the most fun investment we have ever made.”

Clarks knew exactly where they wanted to live by the lake

When Dave and Gingi Clark moved to Alabama from Kentucky in 1990, they knew exactly where they wanted to live — and of course it was Logan Martin Lake. “We never wanted to live in the city,” Mrs. Clark said. “We knew we wanted a home on the lake, and when we saw Logan Martin Lake, we knew that was exactly where we wanted to be.” Dave had retired as a civil engineer, and the Clarks decided to move to Alabama when it became home to two of their three daughters, Dorsey Ochoa and Paula Klien. Both Dorsey’s and Paula’s husbands are doctors in Birmingham. Their third daughter, Ginnie Beth Robinson, lives in Clayton, NC. mother, Clementine Rosche. Mrs. Rosche celebrated her 100th birthday last June. Originally from Illinois, Mrs. Rosche has lived with the Clarks full-time for five years. The apartment was designed for her and her husband several years before his death, and they visited many times. Dave’s favorite past time is golf, and Gingi enjoys a good game of bridge with other members of her club. When the family comes home, the Clarks say they want to go down to the lakeside. They love cooking on the grill, enjoy water sports and spend time visiting under the gazebo and in the boathouse. The grandchildren, ranging in age from 5 years old to 30 years old always enjoy a barbecue and all the trimmings beside the lake. The Clarks are members of Lakewood Presbyterian Church and are very active in Pine Harbor Country Club. They say they love their Logan Martin home and can’t imagine living anywhere else. “There’s no other place where you could find such friendly people as here on the lake. We love Alabama’s hospitality and have ever since we moved here,” Mrs. Clark said.

Taking to the water

My kayak continues to head down the Alabama Scenic River Trail on a cold, wintry day.

34

LAKESIDE LIVING & LOGAN MARTIN HOMES, JANUARY 2010

Don’t let the cold keep you off the lake I guess they thought I was nuts – maybe I am, a little. It was about 40 degrees with a wind chill that made it about 32. At the beginning of my trip, sleet was bouncing off my yellow sea kayak. At least, Dr. Joseph Barra of Seddon Shores Road thought I could have picked a little better day to be kayaking down the Alabama Scenic River Trail. “The best time to paddle is when you can,” I told Barra. He laughed. “I guess you have a point,” he said. Barra is originally from Rochester, N.Y., so he knows the cold. The retired podiatrist enjoys watching birds in the slough behind his

Logan Martin Lake home. Last February, Barra and his neighbor Bill Ervin built an Osprey platform, and the platform actually attracted a pair of birds. “I didn’t think it would work,” Ervin admitted, saying it was all Barra’s idea. Within a few weeks after the tower was finished, a pair of Osprey was building a nest in the 25-foot tall platform. Eggs were laid in the nest, but none hatched. Barra is hoping for better luck this spring. Barra and Ervin are constructing

another platform, just out of eyesight of the first platform they built. Barra said he believes the pair of Osprey will return. He said one of the birds used the platform this past summer to hunt, and he expects the birds to return in a few months when the mating season arrives. They have also put up about three wood duck boxes in the slough. “All three boxes had babies,” he said. “Each box had eight to 12 eggs.” I talked with Barra, Bill and Bill’s wife, Lynn, before heading off in my kayak. I told the Ervins, who were nice enough to let me use their place as a launching pad for this trip, if I wasn’t back one hour after dark to call the Sheriff’s Department. I paddled off. The wind was brutal that day, and the waves on the lake were more like the ones you see in bays, at least on the St. Clair County side of the lake. The wind appeared to be blowing from the east. The wind normally blows from the west, but this was a really cold east wind. I decided to cross the main river channel to the Talladega County side of the lake – what a difference. The high hillside along the Talladega County side of the lake protected me from the howling wind, making it a lot more comfortable. I only paddled a short distance down the Talladega County side before I spotted three young boys. I later learned their names, Keaton Vickers, Harden Battles and Mitchell Disharoom. They were all from Trussville. The three boys were building a fire along the shore of the lake to warm up. I later found out from Keaton’s father, Marty Vickers, that it was his son’s 12th birthday. What a better place to celebrate your birthday than right along the shores of Logan Martin Lake with your close friends? Marty said they come up to the lake about every weekend. Their family’s lakeside home is located in Lincoln. We talked for a while about kayaking. He apparently used to whitewater kayak and has paddled such places as the Nantahala and Ocoee rivers. These are two popular whitewater destinations in North Carolina and Tennessee respectively. As a matter of fact, I’m already planning a trip to both of those whitewater rivers this spring and summer. Anyway, I said my goodbyes to the boys and Marty and continued my trip down the Coosa River. I paddled to about the mouth of Choccolocco Creek and turned around and headed back to where I had begun this trip. It was a cold, very cold trip. I put my hand in the lake water and it was like putting your hand in a bucket of ice water, numbing. About the only thing on the lake were me and the birds. During that five-mile journey, I only saw one boat with one devoted bass fisherman. It’s important for me to mention about the dangers of paddling unprepared during the winter months. If you choose to paddle in the winter like I do, be prepared for an accident. Even when you are prepared, it is no fun when you accidentally turn your kayak over in the middle of the lake, especially during frigid weather conditions. It can be downright dangerous. I wore a thick wetsuit, knee-high neoprene booties, and a splash jacket on this trip.

36

A large egret flies just above the water of Logan Martin Lake. Some people think wetsuits are waterproof. They are not. A wetsuit actually traps water between the suit and your skin. Your body will warm the thin layer of water trapped between you and the suit, providing you insulation from cold water. Wetsuits are affordable and offer protection to paddlers during the winter months. Some days, I’ll wear dry pants and a dry top when cold weather paddling. This combination of clothes does a pretty good job protecting you from cold water, if you accidentally take a dip. The cost for dry tops and dry pants are more than wetsuits, but they offer more protection if you accidentally end up in the water. On really cold days, I will wear a dry suit. This suit is completely waterproof. It also allows you to wear at least one additional layer of clothing, underneath the suit. This is probably the best protection available to paddlers during cold weather, but these waterproof suits aren’t cheap. They are expensive. So, if you are going to paddle during the winter, make the investment in proper paddling clothes. It could save your life. As for me, I’m hoping for warmer weather and a lot more sunshine on my next trip, so until next time, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

ART BY THE WATER How Bruce Day learned to love art

Bruce Day has continued to refine his artistic skills over the years. Story by Brandon Fincher Photos by Brian Schoenhals Many artists trace their love of art way back to their early childhood, but Bruce Day’s artistic journey traveled a different route. “I was the average student that drew or did stuff in school like most of the kids. Not that I disliked art at all, I just had nothing to really draw me in.”

He traces his seminal moment in art to the early 1970s when a co-worker, who was a painter, would, on occasion, bring a painting to the office. Day enjoyed seeing his co-worker’s pieces and thought he would like to take on the challenge of painting. “The first one I painted, I think most people would say, was pretty much a

ART

From Page 37

Bruce Day draws inspiration from a number of different subjects and artists.

disaster.” Luckily, the first was not the last. He could see improvement in the second painting and beyond. “It was several paintings later before I had the nerve to really show it outside the home, but I think that’s true of most people.” He also got involved with photography, not long afterward. “I still enjoy photography, and I enjoy painting. It’s all about composition, color, light, balance, negative space. It’s the same. The lessons you learn in one you can carry over to the other.”

38

He slowed down and basically stopped his artistic hobbies from the mid 80s to the mid 90s because of career and family responsibilities. He retired in 1995, and he and his wife, Jo, moved from Birmingham to his current home near Ashville. Day admits he started to get antsy a few years into retirement. He took a new job, but when he shifted to parttime hours, he picked up painting again to fill the void and has kept going since. He likes to challenge himself by attempting different types of subject matter.

Bruce Day took up artwork when he retired after nearly a decade break from it.

39

ART

From Page 39

Day said his next step may be getting into some art shows.

40

“Most people, particularly ones in shows, are usually doing portraits or landscapes or abstracts only. You usually don’t see a lot of variety. I’ve tried portraits and still-lifes and landscapes, anything that interests me.” He finds his subject matter in various places – magazines, his photography, even the works of his favorite artists, which he will paint a copy of from time to time. He painted with oils for a long time but has switched almost exclusively to acrylics in recent years. “A friend of my wife’s does acrylics, and she was talking about how they are fast-drying and some of the advantages to them, and I liked that. They’re not as expensive as oils, and they don’t have the odor.” Day believes one of the great advantages of painting as a hobby is the low cost of getting started. All the materials

needed to begin can be purchased for around $50. Though he took a painting class for a few months, Day is, for the most part, self-taught. He enjoys watching painting shows on television and occasionally picks up some tips. Like most artists, his chief joy in painting is the pleasure he takes in creating something. “Anybody at any hobby, when they really start to get into it and not think about doing it as a business and making money as a primary focus, it’s the idea of you’re creating something. Whenever you create, no matter how good it is or not good it is, you created it. “Plus it’s enjoyable painting. It passes the time. It’s fun. You learn. You’re the captain of the ship. It’s not like you’re helping build a house with a lot of people involved.” Day said it’s a thrill when people he does not know

LAKESIDE LIVING & LOGAN MARTIN HOMES, JANUARY 2010

One of the great things Day likes about painting as a hobby is that it is inexpensive to get started on.

compliment his work, and it’s an even bigger thrill to hear someone ask, “How much do you want for that?” When his job doesn’t call him out of town, he will paint anywhere between one and four times a week. He likes to keep painting strictly as a hobby and worries making too much of an investment in it will suck out the enjoyment. But he is considering taking a chance and increasing his commitment to painting. “My big decision now and over the winter and starting this spring is do I want to really take that step up and get

into some shows.” Day knows that to sell paintings, you have to get your art exposed to a large number of people through several art shows each year. Art is risky. There have been many times when a painting just did not work out like he envisioned it, Day admits. Making a commitment to put yourself and your creations out for the world to consider is also risky. Day has never been one to shy away from different subject matters in his paintings. Time will only tell if his art career will indeed imitate his art.

Logan Martin Homes A Real Estate Property Guide for Logan Martin Lake and Surrounding Areas

JANUARY 2010

People are attracted to Logan Martin

from all over The Johnsons came all the way from California to find their place by the water at Logan Martin Lake.

Story by Chris Norwood Local photos by Bob Crisp Logan-Martin Lake has long been considered a jewel in Alabama’s crown, but recently word of the good life on the lake has been spreading far outside the Heart of Dixie. And as metro Atlanta succumbs more and more to urban sprawl and the gridlock that comes with it, Logan Martin is an exceptionally attractive option. Jane Gray and her family purchased a lakeside home on the Talladega County side, in the Grandview subdivision of Griffin’s Bend Road. “We bought it this past June,” she explained. “We had friends with summer homes in the area and some permanent homes. And it’s still commutable. And we also like the fact that it’s not an Army Corps of Engineers lake, so you can pretty much do whatever you want with your waterfront property. And the lakes here (in metro Atlanta) are just so crowded.” For the time being, Gray and her family will be using the Alabama property mostly for summers and weekends. Jane Gray has already retired, but her husband, who works for an international energy supplier, is planning to continue working for a few more years. The lake will then probably become their full-time residence.

46

Rob Jones purchased lakeside property “a year and a half, maybe two years ago,” he said. “I’m originally from Birmingham, so I passed back and forth on I-20 when I was in college.” Recently, he was inspired to take a closer look. “As Atlanta grows, the property values just skyrocket, and frankly it takes me just as long to commute from here as it would from where I live now. It’s a straight shot, and it’s whole lot less congested. Plus it’s always nice to be close to the lake.” Jones’ property is near Choccolocco Creek near Poor House Marina. “I still live in Atlanta,” he said, “but it’s great just have a lake house.” Atlanta Veterinarian Max Katz is actually building a house on the Talladega County side of the lake. “We just kind of stumbled on it, truth be told,” Katz explained. “We were originally looking at some lakefront property in Greenwood, S.C., but that’s a two-and-a-half-hour drive, so we started looking in other parts of the Southeast. Then we started looking in Alabama, first around Wedowee, then around Lake Martin. Then I saw a Horizons ad and met with (developer) Joe Paul Abbott.” Katz also cited an article in the New York Times calling the Logan-Martin area “a diamond in the rough. You’ve got

from all over

Alabama from the other end of the continent, specifically Redondo Beach, Calif. “My husband is a fisherman, and he started researching southern lakes,” she explained. “We went to Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina to look at different properties, and frankly we weren’t all that impressed. Then we found three lakes in Alabama that had nice, clear water and good fishing. We checked out Weiss Lake first, then Logan Martin, then Lewis Smith, but we really liked Logan Martin when we saw it. So we started looking around for a place in Pell City.”

They eventually found one, complete with boat dock and a view of Stemley Bridge. They moved in in September. They are settling in now, almost fulltime residents of the lake. “We also have a cabin up in Minnesota, but it’s way too cold for us to stay there year round. My husband goes up there every spring, and I join him every other summer. You know, my husband had been a surfer for the last 40 years, but he says now he’d rather just fish than fight the waves.” Sounds like a perfect recipe for life on the lake.

bass fishing, you’ve still got the smalltown feel, and everything’s not overdeveloped.” Ultimately, Katz and his family decided to go their own way rather than buying into Horizons. “We have plenty of new brick house subdivisions in Atlanta, so we decided that wasn’t for us.” Katz said he saw Realtor Nancy Locklar’s name in an ad and got several recommendations. “Nancy was just phenomenal,” he said. “We were going around the lake with her two times per week for nine weeks until we found it. We went over the whole lake — we were on a mission. Then finally we found this beautiful property.” Katz’s property is also on the Talladega County side of the lake. “We hired David Dean of Premier Services as the contractor,” he said. “We broke ground last month and are expecting to be done by the end of February or the beginning of March.” Katz, his wife and his 5-year-old son will be spending summers and weekends by the water. Although metro Atlanta is probably the largest out-of-state donor to the Logan Martin Lake population, it is far from the only one. In fact, Marcella Johnson recently settled in east central
