t’s 85 degrees and sunny. The kids are out of school and plan to go barefoot until September. You’ve seen the last of long pants for months and officially adopted flipflops as the appropriate footwear for every occasion. Jackets? Not unless they are lightweight and waterproof and fit in boat stowage. Welcome June; what took you so long? June is the month of some of summer’s most fun organized events, including the annual Block Party, Lake Fest and Boat Show, and Catfish Rodeo in Pell City; the third annual Taste of Lincoln and the always entertaining Riverside Poker Run. June is the time between Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, a time for sitting on the dock or screened porch with your feet up, sipping lemonade or something with cherries and pineapple speared on a paper umbrella. Sooner or later, you’re going to have to move, you know, but not just yet. Spend a few more minutes with the magazine in your hands and I promise that when you do decide to get up, you’ll have plenty of ideas for things you’ll want to do. You’ll be hungry. Your nose will detect the irresistible aroma of ribs or burgers on your neighbor’s grill. You have a grill — get it out. Inspired by grill master David Foote’s techniques, you’ll be on your way to the barbecue of your dreams. Prefer fish? Catch your own, or at least try. A day with anglers Bob Champion and Jimmy Crump shows “why it’s called fishing, not catching.” Maybe you want to cook on an open fire while camping. Over in Riverside, a new shelter and fire ring are waiting for you. Or you could set up a tent at Lakeside Landing as a base for a kayaking weekend. If you’re still looking for your perfect home on the lake, consider shopping by houseboat. Lake houses look best when viewed from the water. With all these choices, you must be itching to get going. But before you take off, do one thing for me. Send an email to news@dailyhome.com with your suggestions for the names for the new goats on Goat Island. You don’t want the goats to remain nameless all summer, do you?

he man walked out of the big motor home and introduced himself. “Rudolph,” he said, when I asked him to repeat his name. “Rudolph — like the reindeer,” he said. Little did Rudolph Lindsey know he was speaking to a guy who dresses up in red each Christmas season to play Santa Claus for local children. I met Rudolph during my most recent kayaking trip down Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail. Rudolph and his wife Sarah were staying at Lakeside Landing in their 45-foot, very plush home on wheels. It had to be the top-of-the-line RV. For the past 10 years the retired couple has traveled the U.S., living in the large recreational vehicle — amazing. I don’t know if I could do it. He said their mail is sent to a company in Texas, which forwards it to where they happen to be from one week to the next — neat, huh? Rudolph told me they sold their Michigan home and hit the road after he retired as a chemical engineer for Dow Chemical. Sarah is a retired school teacher and administrator.

Laura Nation-Atchison

Rudolph and Sarah Lindsey have lived and traveled the U.S. in a huge recreational vehicle for the past 10 years.

They say they have never regretted the move, and both enjoy traveling and the outdoors. They travel from east to west each year, enjoying their stay in Chula Vista, Calif., while on the west coast. Their goal is to see every national park in the U.S. I think I remember Rudolph saying they are about 10 parks shy of that goal. He said Yellowstone is without a doubt the most beautiful, most unique national park they have visited. Rudolph is originally from Bainbridge, Ga., and his wife

grew up in Birmingham. They met at Tuskegee Institute. They were in the area for their nephew’s graduation from Miles College. I never did meet Sarah, but Laura, my wife, did when she took the couple a gift bag. Since they arrived in town the night before the tornadoes, she wanted them to have something nice to remember Pell City by. So, Laura thought about it, and bingo — what would be better than a bag of Royal Sausage products! But it turns out, the Lindseys discovered Pell City

and Lakeside Landing a couple of years ago and liked it so much they spent almost two months here. We think they’ll be back; at least we hope so. It’s like I’ve said before, you never know who you’re going to see or meet on Logan Martin Lake. It was a real pleasure meeting such an interesting, nice guy, like Rudolph — like the reindeer! On my latest trip, I also had a very special guest to paddle with me — one of my sons. I have two sons. Kenneth, 27, is the younger, and Jonathan, 31, who made the trip with me, is my older son. Our plan was to set up camp at Lakeside Landing and travel from there to Lakeside Park, where I had stopped on my trip before. Jonathan was running a little late, so I went ahead and set up camp. I wanted to make sure we got a camping spot next to the water, which we did, right next to the Lindseys. As I was setting up camp, I realized I had forgotten an extra sleeping bag for Jonathan. I got everything set up, including the fire pit we used Friday night, and headed back to the house to get another sleeping bag. As soon as I made it home, I called Jonathan to find out his status. He was already at the camp. “Where is my tent?” was the first words out of his mouth. “You’re at camp?” I asked. “Yeah,” he said. “Well, you’re looking at it,” I said. “No way,” he said. I laughed and explained that what he was looking at was in fact a two-man tent. “Your uncle and I camped in it two months ago,” I told him. Later he inspected the inside of the tent and admitted, “It’s bigger than what I thought.” The size of the tent is a little deceptive from the outside, but it is a backpacking tent, so there’s no wasted space.

A campfire kept Jonathan, in the background fishing, and me warm during the night at Lakeside Landing.

A group of ducks rest on an old pier.

As soon as I returned to Lakeside Landing with Jonathan’s sleeping bag, I threw his bag inside the tent, and we boarded our kayaks to begin our journey. It was a beautiful day to be on the lake, a bit windy, but really pretty. Not too hot, not too cold. Jonathan brought along his fishing reel and rod and fished at a few spots. While he fished, I looked for

interesting pictures, mostly of waterfowl. Around the bend from Lakeside Landing, we reached Images, a fairly new residential development on the lake. I recognized the development from the line of houseboats next to the long pier. I have been on a couple of those boats in the past. I enjoy reading the names people give their boats,

and the names on the line of houseboats docked at Images were typical — “Bout Time,” “Never say Never,” and “Checkmate — Have Boat Will Float,” were just a few of the names painted across the hulls of the large vessels. Jonathan made his way to an island that was directly across from Images. On the island was an old marooned boat. The hull was damaged. It was apparent the boat had been there for some time. I saw Jonathan peering over the side of the hull, inside the large boat. He waved his hand at me to come see what he had found. I had no idea what he had stumbled across. In the boat was a mallard hen, sitting under the front dash of the craft. The hen finally spooked and flew a short distance away from the island. There was a nest with at least two eggs. We tried to get a picture of the nest, but it was next to impossible without some work, and there was hardly any light where the hen had built the nest. We got back into our boats and continued our journey to

Lakeside Park. Jonathan found a spot to fish as I slowly paddled onward, looking for wildlife to photograph. We finally made our way to the sports complex. Huey Alverson of Wattsville was trying his luck fishing at the point at the sports complex. “I just caught one fish, but I’m enjoying the sunshine,” he said as we passed by him in our boats. He said it was the first time he’s been fishing in about four years. Around the bend was another angler. This fisherman had waders, and a big fishing net hung around his right shoulder. You could tell he was not new to fishing. I immediately started taking photographs of him until I finally realized who he was. The fisherman was Frank Nettles of Birmingham. Boy, does Frank get around on the lake. Frank was featured on our March Lakeside magazine cover,

Fischer Houser, 13, of Pell City, shows off a bass he caught from the shore of Lakeside Landing.

and there he was doing what he loves the most — fishing. I paddled farther to the beaver dam up in the wetlands area of Lakeside Park before turning around. Jonathan and I picked up the pace and headed back to camp. When we reached Lakeside Landing, 13-year-old Fischer Houser was all set up at the end of the pier, fishing away. Fischer is a Duran South Junior High School student. When asked what he wanted to do when he got older, his answer was simple — fish! I told Jonathan that Fischer reminded me of his brother Kenneth when he was 12. Kenneth has always been a very intense fisherman. Jonathan knows quite well how serious Kenneth is about his fishing and knew exactly what I was talking about. He recalled a story about the two of them going fishing and the weather was absolutely terrible — cold and rainy. Jonathan said he had a poncho over his head and was shivering so hard, he couldn’t even hold a fishing pole. “Can we go now,” he asked.

Frank Nettles of Birmingham is one devoted fisherman.

“Nope,” Kenneth said. “That’s the last time I’ve gone fishing with Kenneth,” he told me. As soon as we got the kayaks out of the water, I started cooking dinner. We had a really good meal, big juicy steaks and baked potatoes. Laura came by after work and visited awhile as we ate. I offered her some food, but she had to get to the house and take care of the animals. I think Jonathan really enjoyed himself — about as much as I did. “Let me know when you go again,” he said. Later that night, Jonathan and I sat by a big campfire, just talking and enjoying a quiet evening along Logan Martin Lake. He fished a little more and managed to hook one bass. To me, it was another perfect outing, and I really enjoyed sharing it with my son. I also look forward to my next trip. So until then, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

A Good Day Fishing

Bob Champion catches a keeper fishing a quiet spot on the local water.

‘There is nothing profound, nothing complicated and nothing incredible about going fishing. But it sure is a nice way to spend a day.’ Story and Photos by MATT QUILLEN

M

ost of the morning was spent under a dull gray sky, as the choppy water rocked the boat gently. The catches were few, relatively speaking. The two experts, Bob Champion and Jimmy Crump, had a dozen or so good size crappie wading in their live well within about three hours. But the haul was easily triple that only two weeks earlier, they said, when the sun was shining brightly and the water was calmer. A few more catches were tossed back by the pair, who hoped to catch the fish another time after they had grown up. The novice even caught a couple of catfish, although they were more suited for a fish tank than a fish fry, so they too were dropped back in the lake. 14

| Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - June 2011

Conversation, the light whirring of the boat’s motor and the occasional “zzzzzzzzz-splash” of a line being cast in were rarely interrupted by other noise. As the morning broke to the afternoon, the sun also broke through the early clouds. The tops of the small waves breaking glinted in the light, countless white diamonds across the deep blue shade of the water. A “bad” day fishing is better than a good day of almost anything else. The three cast their lines intermittently, each with bobbers and lead weights attached to the line. Minnows are their preferred bait for catching crappie, although Jimmy does use jig bait on occasion. The two experts use two rods each, while the novice

tries not to hook anything besides fish with his one. “A lot of times when they start hitting, we won’t fish but with one pole,” Bob says. “When they start hitting, you won’t be able to use more than one anyway.” Bob and Jimmy say they prefer to do “real fishing,” and they stick to the rules. They measure any catch that may be close to the 9-inch legal size and toss any back that don’t hit the mark. They also talk about the sport, or lack thereof, of “spider fishing” that others do on the water. “It is where they have poles on each side of the boat,” Bob says. “They’ll have this mount they can put two or three poles in it.” “They’ll have three on this side and three on that side and they just troll,” Jimmy adds. “They can cover a lot of territory,” Bob says. “But to me that’s not fishing, because they don’t actually catch it. The rod and reel catch it for them, and all they do is reel it in.” The two know the water off Knox Landing well. The

landing is named after the guy who owns the house in front of it. Today the only company on the water is the ducks, cranes and other wildlife. An eagle peeks his head from a nest perched on a nearby island and then takes flight as the three men look on. Bob and Jimmy say they fish here often and are usually the only boat on the water. Both retirees, their weekday fishing trips start in the morning and can last until 5 p.m. or later. The longtime friends say they have fished this spot together for decades. The two have even gotten acquainted with the residents along the waterline. Talking points range from fishing to sports to the environment to politics, then back to fishing. Bob talks about a big catch, a crappie the length of his forearm, and the high hopes for the new football coach at his old high school. Jimmy discusses the “fisherman’s nightmare,” personal watercraft that roar across the water, and the baby geese on June 2011 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

the island. He points out good spots near the docks and where downed trees beneath the water provide good cover for schools of fish. Time moves easily through the day. Each catch is a small victory, enjoyed briefly as it is pulled in and dropped in the well or back in the water. But when minutes pass without a catch for anyone, there isn’t a real concern. Maybe another spot, maybe another bait or maybe simply another day will prove more fruitful. There is nothing profound, nothing complicated and nothing incredible about going fishing. But it sure is a nice way to spend a day. Even when the catches are few, relatively speaking of course. “But that happens you know. That happens to the professionals,” Bob says. Jimmy adds “that’s why they call it ‘fishing,’ not ‘catching.’”

Champion displays the black crappie he pulled in.

Riverside Joins River Trail

The view from inside the shelter.

Pell City teenager Jeremy Swindeall builds a public campsite on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout Story and photos by Kenny Farmer

R

iverside Mayor Rusty Jessup said that becoming part of the 631-mile Alabama Scenic River Trail was part of what the town was trying to accomplish with the purchase of the D and S marina in December 2009. Jessup thought that the river trail was a good program and that Riverside provided good access to the trail from Interstate 20. When Eagle Scout candidate Jeremy Swindeall approached Jessup about creating a permanent campsite there, “It was like a gift from God,” said Jessup.

In April 2010, the Pell City High School student and Boy Scout was in search of a project that would help him earn Eagle Scout status. The requirements of the project assigned to him by the Boy Scouts of America called for him to “plan, develop and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, any school or your community.” He talked to Jessup and listened in on City Council meetings before deciding that D and S Marina was in need of a place where campers could cook and seek shelter from inclement weather. Later that Swindeall stands with sign designating his campsite as part of the National Recreation Trail.

month, Swindeall would begin leading a group of Scouts in the construction of the new campsite. “This project will benefit the town and people of Riverside, as well as the Alabama Scenic River Trail, because it will be an official designated campsite which will allow canoeists, kayakers and motor boaters to have a place to stop and rest while enjoying the 631 miles of water trails,” said Swindeall. The mayor says he was “elated” to learn of Swindeall’s desire to improve the marina property. Jessup explained that the town of Riverside had just purchased the marina when Swindeall came to him with the campground project. “The timing was perfect.” “You just can’t say enough about communityminded organizations like the Boy Scouts,” said Jessup. The campground was recently finished after more than 150 hours of work and planning were done by Swindeall and 11 others. The Scouts built a permanent Swindeall and others begin work on the campsite.

wood shelter, a fire ring and benches. Two trees were planted on the campground as well. Riverside City Council member and retired brick mason Jimmy Hollander also pitched in, spending two hours laying stone around the fire ring. The cost of the campground project was $1,116.05. Building supplies were donated by Girl Scout Troop 764, Henderson’s Building Supply, Hazelwood’s Nursery and Walmart. The price of donated materials totaled $834.87. Alabama Brick also sold items at a discounted price to assist with the cost of the project. “Overall, it turned out amazing,” said Swindeall. “I’m proud of the way it looks.” “It’s better than what I thought it would be,” said Jessup. “They did a lot more than what I expected.” However, Swindeall admits that the area can be improved. Some things that the Scouts had envisioned for the campsite could not be completed because of a lack of time or money. Swindeall said that he was “glad to be given the

opportunity” by the town of Riverside to complete the project. Swindeall earned his Eagle Scout rank, the highest in Scouting, thanks to his work on this project along with 12 merit badges. “It’s a very long and tedious process, but it pays out in the end,” he said. He also said that he hopes the campsite will be there for a long time and that it will be something the whole community can use and enjoy. “We have big plans for it,” said Jessup. He said he hopes to one day add a public bath facility, pave the parking lot and possibly add a small restaurant or general store. He also says the town of Riverside will be taking bids on the construction of a boardwalk that would be near the campground facilities. Artby the Water

Look Into the Wood Story and Photos by AZIZA JACKSON

Tom Goodwin finds characters as he carves

T

om Goodwin has taken what was once whittling and turned it into art form all his own. When he and his wife Sandy are not chasing down driftwood near their home on Logan Martin Lake, Goodwin spends days in his studio turning everyday pieces of wood into art through woodcarving. “About 15 years ago, I started by accident,” Goodwin said. After spending time whittling small pieces of wood, he went to a woodcraft show where he observed the work of professional woodcarvers. “I got to wondering ‘how do you do that,’” Goodwin said. 24

| Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - June 2011

After taking a few classes with several woodcarvers who had a group at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park in McCalla, Ala., Goodwin said he “just started carving.” “My wife kept pushing me to keep carving,” Goodwin said. Goodwin said he would sell pieces here and there but didn’t start selling a lot until he got involved with the Council of the Arts in Pell City. Goodwin is a member of a Logan Martin Woodcarvers group in Pell City and has been involved in several council activities including an art camp

for children ages 8-15 that will start in July. He teaches an “Introduction to Woodcarving” class at the ArtScapes Gallery in Pell City and will do a presentation on woodcarving at 6:30 p.m., June 14, at ArtScapes. His class currently consists of only two students and is taught on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon, or whenever Goodwin says they get finished. “I don’t really ask them to buy any tools, because in the beginning, when I first started out, I bought things I didn’t need,” Goodwin said. He said the smaller the class is, the better opportunity for the students to get the attention they need when first starting out. When asked what the first rule he makes sure to tell his students is, Goodwin said, “Think before you cut.” “You have to use your eyes and look at something,” Goodwin said. “People think they know what a dog looks like, what a cat looks like, what a person looks like, but the subtle details you put on them can bring new life to the animal. “You have to have a center line and some reference points.” He said it is easy to fix a lot of mistakes when carving wood, but if too much wood is used, there is no quick fix. “You have to have a lot of sandpaper,” Goodwin chuckled. Sandpaper helps to smooth out the wood, and after several coats of polyurethane, the wood is left with a smooth and glossy finish. However, sandpaper and polyurethane are merely the finishing touches when it comes to woodcarving. The proper tools, as well as the right type of wood, become essential with this art form. Tools ranging from chisels, power carvers, rotary carvers and carving burs, to something as simple as a pocket knife can be used to carve wood. “You need to know something about your wood,” Goodwin said. He said the dust that results from carving

has different levels of toxicity, especially in wood from exotic trees. Catawba, basswood, California redwood, oak, and cherry are among the different types of wood one can carve. “Your basswood most of the time is northern, because they have a closer grain,” Goodwin said. “You’d have to buy that.” Goodwin said the cold weather, as is common in the North, makes the tree thick enough to carve. “As far as the driftwood, I don’t know what it is,” Goodwin said. “When it floods in the spring, you get a lot of the driftwood, so sometimes we’ll chase it down.” For Goodwin, the amount of time he spends on completing a piece depends heavily on how charged up he is about it. It could take a matter of three to four days on a medium-size piece if he works on it full time. Wood burning also proves to be a tedious yet worthwhile process, giving life to his animal figurines by burning needle-like hairs onto animal figures such as deer and lions, one by one. With all the work that goes into his pieces, Goodwin hardly ever thinks to name them. “That’s where my wife gets on me,” Goodwin said. “I don’t name anything. The only thing I’ve ever named was my dog.” A quick look around the Goodwin’s living room and woodcarving studio will reveal a love for animals, everything from swordfish to eagles, lions and deer. In the Goodwins’ living room is also a woodcarving of their border collie named Tigger, who lived to be 14 years old. When asked why he does so many animal pieces, Goodwin said, “I guess I just grew up with them all my life and started doing them. “I know them more than people.” Goodwin said he prefers to give his animals a matte finish so they do not turn out looking like wax figures; he often paints over the wood

Services now available from our Pell City office.

When life turns golden... Always There Provides the Silver Lining. At 93-years old, Herman Libbe’s life is golden. “Being able to remain in his home is very important to him,” says Herman’s daughter Penny Patterson. “Always There In-Home Care makes that possible. He dearly loves his caregiver, Amelia.” For over a year, Always There’s Amelia Gibson has nurtured a special relationship with Mr. Libbe that transcends helping maintain his home and preparing his meals. They have become friends. In fact, when the dapper Mr. Libbe takes his two walks per day, he carries his cane in one hand and Amelia on the other. Penny says, “We can’t imagine having anyone else care for him.” Like many adult children of aging parents, Penny has a busy personal life, which presents challenges in her ability to offer constant attention to her father. Always There offers Penny a solution - call it a silver lining - to that cloudy issue. My father is not always easy to deal with. I tried other companies in the area, and Always There has been by far the best. In particular their Care Management services have been a huge help with planning and decision-making. I couldn’t be more pleased with their dependability and service.” For more information about Always There, call 205-824-0224, or visit our website at www.alwaysthereinc.com for a free online assessment of your needs.

Before you hire an in-home care company, be sure to ask: Who is responsible for payroll taxes, Social Security, and liability insurance on the worker? Who sends a replacement when my regular caregiver calls off sick? Is the company insured, licensed, and bonded? Are caregivers employees of the company or merely independent contractors? 931 Martin St. South, Pell City AL. (In the K-Mart Shopping Center)

There’s No Stress at Jo Jo’s House Jo and Jim McCabes’ Lincoln lakeside paradise is a place for family and friends to relax and play By LAURA NATION-ATCHISON Photos by BRIAN SCHOENHALS 30

I

t’s come to be known as “Jo Jo’s house,” and everyone wants to go there. Maybe it’s the gorgeous pool and hot tub, or maybe it’s the lavishly landscaped lot on a quiet inlet. Or it might be the great game room, or the home theater with its 12-foot screen or the inviting places to perch with a lakeside view. Suffice it to say, there’s plenty to like for everyone at the home Jim and Jo McCabe, situated at the end of a narrow lane in Lincoln. The McCabes found their Florida-like paradise on Logan

Jim and Jo McCabe found their Florida style home in Lincoln two years ago. They love the open design and the large lot they have. The McCabes bought an extra lot next to their home and this year have planted a vegetable garden there.

Martin Lake two years ago, and really by accident. At the time, the McCabes were living in what they felt was their absolute dream home on the ocean in Tampa, but they began to feel they wanted to be closer to family. Their daughter, Melissa, was expecting their first grandchild, and the McCabes wanted to be nearby. Melissa and her husband, Jeremy Manns, live in Acworth, Ga., just outside of Atlanta, and that’s where the waterfront property search began. After not finding a freshwater lake area and home they liked, the McCabes just happened upon the eventual lake The McCabes’ swing placed at the tip of their lake property is a favorite spot for catching the outstanding lake sunsets.

home while visiting Jo McCabe’s parents, who live in Lincoln. “Melissa and I were just out riding around with the grandkids and saw it,” she said. “She got out to look while I stayed with the children, then 2 and a newborn.” When her daughter returned to the car, she delivered the news. “She said, ‘I’ve found your house,’” Jo McCabe said. “It’s perfect.” Jo and Jim came to Lincoln the next weekend, and she told him she had narrowed the search down to four houses. “I asked if he wanted to see the one we were going to buy first or last,” she said. “He saw it and agreed.” The house was still under construction, but as it turned out, that made it all the more perfect. The builder turned out to be their neighbor, Bobby Smith of Superior Home Construction. “We were able to select all the finishes, every light fixture, the cabinet hardware, the hardwood floors, right down to the details of the tile work,” Jo said. The likeness to their home in Tampa was a big selling point; the McCabes learned that even the neighbors were calling it “the Florida house” while it was being built. The house has an open floor plan that the McCabes

love, another element that their home in Florida had. Jim McCabe grew up in Childersburg, and managing the McDonald’s restaurant in Sylcauga led him to meet his wife. McCabe has a long history with McDonald’s. He’s been with the company going on now 37 years and is vice president for U.S. operations. He started out with the company in West Columbia, S.C., at age 17, making milkshakes.

The formal dining area is spacious with seating for six and is located just off the kitchen. Double glass doors and windows look out to a screened porch and the pool and patio.

He continued working for McDonald’s through college and graduate school. McCabe’s office is in Chicago, and the couple spends most weekdays there, commuting to the Lincoln lake house on weekends. The lifestyle works well with McCabe’s being a pilot and owning his own plane, a dream he’s had since he was little. The McCabes fly in and out of the Pell City airport, just a 20-minute drive from their home. Then, too, there’s the fact that Jo McCabe’s parents live very close by and keep a close check on things while their daughter and son-in-law are in Chicago. Before leading an exploration of the interior of the house, Jo adds that the one of the many pluses they have found in their Logan Martin home is their neighbors. “We absolutely have wonderful neighbors,” she said. “That’s always a big thing, and we are very fortunate with that.” Double doors set with beveled glass lead into the foyer, and overhead is an arched transom, matching the arched windows on the front of the house. A pair of cast iron lanterns hangs alongside the front door, and the front walk features an inlaid tile design of repeating stars in beige and browns. A bed of pink azaleas greets guests along the drive, and white crape myrtles and hydrangeas keep seasonal blooms in beds along the street and in other beds accenting the front lawn. 34

The master bathroom features a glassed-in shower and separate tub area. Travertine on the floor complements darker tiles on th walls.

The foyer leads into the spacious living room straight ahead; there’s a smaller seating area to the right. Twin columns set off the foyer from the living areas. Furnishings are primarily contemporary, with two deep leather couches in a rich brown facing a square glass-topped coffee table. Softening the hard impact of the tile floor is an area rug in a geometric design in shades of browns, terracotta and sage. A broad fireplace and hearth built of slate has room overhead for a

large flat-screen television. The lake view, not the TV, draws the eye in this room, however, and it is comfortably enjoyed from a carved chair featuring animals of Africa, zebras and elephant, which the McCabes found at the Atlanta Merchandise Mart. On either side of the mantle are abstract paintings in warm hues. On the front side of the living room is a smaller sitting area furnished with two brown leather couches and a matching chair. A broad arched window on the front wall brings in lots of natural light. The room is large, so oversized ceiling fans were a must. The view to the water is maximized with floor-to-ceiling windows and double doors opening to the pool and patio and onto a screened porch that stretches across the back of the house. Here there is room for a dining table and outdoor seating overlooking the pool. To the left of the foyer is space for an office area, and the McCabes chose a large carved desk with a rolled back leather chair and a large armoire for the room. The desk is in the center of the room, atop an area rug in earth tones in a geometric design. The armoire has space for the collection of leatherbound classic books, “The Hundred Greatest Books Ever Written. The room has the same wide arched window as the sitting area across the foyer. Throughout the house, windows are fitted with plantation shutters, and walls are a neutral shade of golden beige with trim and molding painted white. The kitchen is in the center of the house, open to the foyer, office and study and the living and dining room. A large work island with an inset cooktop is in the center of the kitchen space, surrounded by a rectangular countertop

work area which holds the sinks and provides additional seating on the outer side. There are four wrought iron bar seats, upholstered in deep brown. Overhead are suspended glass globe lighting fixtures in addition to recessed lighting. Countertops are black and beige-flecked granite, and underneath on the outside of the bar, tile is laid in a diamond pattern. The kitchen features two built-in ovens, one stacked above the other. Appliances are stainless. Cabinets have a glazed maple finish with bronze hardware. There are drawers designed for holding large pieces of cookware and drawers designed to stack plates, using wood dowels to keep them separated. A wine cooler has space for chilling 180 bottles and at different temperatures. A formal dining room is next to the kitchen. The rectangular dining table, which seats six, is mahogany with contrasting insets of darker wood. Leather-covered chairs have elegant curved backs. The table is set with bronze chargers on burgundy place mats, continuing an earth-tone palette

The outdoor kitchen is by the pool; and has everything needed for preparing food and serving guests.

throughout the house. A chandelier overhead has a modern twist, with a metal sculpture hoisting tiered glass globes for lighting. The dining room floor is beige tile, with a decorative inlay in a darker shade creating a rectangular inset underneath the table. A large china cabinet has the same two-tone effect, and its doors are done with beveled glass. A Tuscan-inspired wall hanging adorns one wall, and decorative scrolled metal sconces hang on either side. The game room is just off the dining room and has entry to the pool and patio. It includes a pool table and dartboard, a beverage vending machine and lots of McCabe’s flying memorabilia, including a painting his wife had done for him of his first plane. Painted by artist Sam Lyons, well known in aviation circles for his work, it bears a plaque that reads, “A Dream Come True,” “for Jim McCabe.” There’s a large-screen television for keeping an eye on “the games,” and plenty of seating for friends. Outside, the pool is designed in a scalloped shape, with a hot tub at one end and a cascading waterfall at the other. On the far end of the patio is the McCabe’s outdoor kitchen, completely screened and complete with a bar with seating for four. That’s where the margarita machine lives, ready to whir up the frozen concoction lots of lake visitors love. McCabe has his own recipe for helping keep the calorie count low on the drinks, and doesn’t mind sharing it. Instead of using a prepared mix, he makes his own, using real lime and lemon juice, a splash of orange juice, Splenda for sweetening and whatever the favored brand of libation is. There’s plenty of space on the patio for relaxing, with lounge chairs fitted with terry covers along with other seating for guests. A tiered rock waterfall runs along the side of the kitchen and patio to the waterfront, along the beds of azaleas and lilies and other plantings the McCabes have added. The landscaping was one of the biggest projects when the McCabes bought their home. “I had a big mud yard and that was about it,” Jo McCabe said. “It’s amazing what a little work can do.” McCabe himself sketched out the design for landscaping, drawing it on the back of a menu while the couple were having

dinner at a restaurant in Chicago. Then, they took the idea to Todd Hayes of Southern Heritage Landscaping. The couple added more than 400 plants and used 300 bales of pine straw in their landscaping. A path leads between the trees and flowers to the water. Along the way, there’s a sitting area and fire pit, and The McCabes’ margarita machine finally, reaching the shore, is just the thing for mixing up the spot where the McCabes poolside libations for friends. placed a wood swing to watch the sunsets up close. It’s a favorite spot, and just behind it is the boathouse and deck the McCabes added, along with the “beach” they built having white sand hauled in for the special effect. Brightly colored Adirondack chairs dot the beach area, with tables placed alongside for holding drinks or books or other beach necessities. The McCabes hauled in 15 tons of sand to create their stretch of private “beach.” Back inside, the master bedroom and bath and fully equipped exercise room run alongside the entire east end of the house. The master bedroom itself includes 1,500 square feet of living space, and the McCabes laugh that the rectangular room is the size of their entire condo in Chicago. The majestic room holds a king-size sleigh bed covered with a silky burgundy spread embossed with gold scrolling. Three stacks of coordinating pillows at the headboard ensure a comfortable place to rest. On either side of the bed are windows with sheer silk drapes in swatches of burgundy and beige tied back with thick tasseled ropes in the same shades. A broad bench at the foot of the bed is fitted with a comforter matching the one used on the bed. On one end of the bedroom is a sitting area with a triplepaned window offering a lake view, and there’s a telescope for taking advantage of the views of wildlife and interesting lake activity that takes place on the water. At this end, too, is an “outdoor room,” another favorite spot. With soft seating and a fireplace of its own, the room looks out over the patio and pool to the lake. A screen can be used to close off the room from the outdoors when necessary.

nautical design are used on the beds, each topped with a white teddy bear propped on top of pillows covered with matching nautical shams. The waterfront theme continues with a buoy descending from the overhead light fixture and a metal fish attached to a fishing pole hanging on one wall. The McCabes have named their guestrooms after places in their lives. The Chicago Room has a photograph of the Chicago skyline and a painting of the city’s stone water tower, one of the buildings that didn’t burn in the Great Chicago Fire. The bed is covered with a burgundy satin-like spread, which has gold-piped edging and matching shams and pillows. A sheer gold drape is topped by a burgundy cornice, the drape pulled to one side with a gold rope tie. The Southern Room, named for the 10 years the McCabes spent in Atlanta, is usually the favorite guest room, Jo McCabe said. “Whoever gets here first gets it,” she said. This room faces the lake, and a large triple-paned window allows a perfect view. The four-poster king-size bed has a decorative wrought iron headboard and foot, and it’s covered with a silky burgundy spread with gold scrolls running through it.

Sheer drapes are alternating burgundy and gold panels, pulled back to show the view of Logan Martin Lake. The McCabes installed a home theater, fitted with large plush seats covered in soft crimson fabric on a raised floor. Walls are covered with pleated crimson fabric to absorb sound. The movie screen is about 12 feet wide and 6 feet tall, giving a complete theater-like experience for watching movies. This is where Jo McCabe displays two favorite keepsakes, signed photographs of Marlene Dietrich and Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, given to her by a friend in Florida. The McCabes say they have definitely reached their goal of having a paradise-like getaway not just for themselves, but for family and friends to enjoy as well. “Our goal was to be able to relax, and for friends and family to feel welcome and that they had a ‘resort like’ place to come relax and play,” Jo McCabe said. “No one is stressed at Jo Jo’s house.” And for the McCabes, since finding their dream home on Logan Martin, even traveling doesn’t hold the same appeal it once did. “Like Jim says, what happens when your reality exceeds your wildest dreams? That’s what we have. As the kids call it, Jo Jo’s house where every day is an adventure.”

Redesigned

to Stand the Test of Time Joan Goldberg’s newly redesigned kitchen provides unexpected space and convenience in a small house By LINDSEY HOLLAND

ontrasting black and white cabinets compliment the light blue backsplash, creating an overall traditional look for the recently redesigned kitchen of Pell City homeowner Joan Goldberg. The adjacent living room with high ceilings creates a spacious feeling, enabling guests to relax on the couch while Goldberg prepares a hot meal in the nearby kitchen. “My favorite part now is the kitchen counter and the sink — this area where I can serve from,” she said. “I love all the extra space. I didn’t even have these corner cabinets before. The next part I love would be the (electrical outlets) for serving because I have a lot of parties and I set up over there. For a small house, I have a large area to serve from.” Goldberg said she has guests over often, and the cabinets that were added to the dining room area have outlets above them, making them ideal for keeping dishes warm — and guests full. designer with Lake Home Center in Pell City, is responsible for the design of Goldberg’s new kitchen. The two got together and began to work on a redesign when a life-changing event halted plans. “We were trying to sell our house in Vestavia Hills, and we decided to move back up to Pell City because we’d lived on the lake before and we owned this property,” Goldberg said. “We got with Melinda, and she drew up the first kitchen, but we couldn’t do it.” Goldberg’s husband fell ill. Makeshift cabinets were added, but only for the time being. When he passed away, Goldberg decided it was time to finish the kitchen. “I had put just some cabinets in to get through, and she totally redid this from taking my old white cabinets and

And for me — for most everyone — that’s very important, to work with a budget.” Harris said if they have what clients are looking for at Lake Home Center, then they will try their best to save their customers money. With a couple of thousand different styles to offer, she said, they usually can match the customer’s specific needs. “We have a lot of merchandise that comes in at a very good price,” she said. “It comes from either a salvaged buy or companies that are going out of business and liquidating, or overstock or discontinued stock. customers and meet their needs, because you save a lot of money by doing simple things. It helps to spend money on backsplash or something, so you get more for your money.” Goldberg was impressed with the amount of space and storage she gained after the redesign. Cary Baker, responsible for installing the cabinets and creating the additional storage, took the cabinets Goldberg had in place and turned a two-door narrow cabinet into a spacious one-door unit. Harris said they ended up making some significant changes to the kitchen. “We talked about taking what she had and just adding to it to get the end result she wanted,” she said. “We changed it to give it the look she wanted. Being a small company, we have the flexibility to take on something like this, whereas larger companies may not.” The project took two months from start to finish — although the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays played a part in the process. Goldberg said the time it took wasn’t a concern to her — mostly because after everyone left for the day, she couldn’t even tell they had been there. “(Baker) worked right on site,” Goldberg said. “Everything stayed very clean the whole time they worked, and it took awhile. They cleaned up after themselves. When I would come

home, it was like they hadn’t even been here. They are very good to work with when you’re living in a home and trying to do a project at the same time.” Harris said she feels fortunate to have Baker working alongside her because he encounters new situations but isn’t afraid to embrace them and find what works. She said this enables her to offer custom cabinetry. “This style of kitchen will always be popular,” Harris said. “It’s not trendy. It’s more of a traditional style, so I think this is a kitchen design that will stand the test of time, really.”

Meat Master For some folks, barbecue is food. For David Foote, it’s a way of life. By CHRIS NORWOOD Photos by Brian Schoenals

“MY

David Foote has been grilling for most of his 49 years.

grandmother ran a restaurant, so I’ve literally been around it my whole life,” says David Foote of Pell City. “I probably started actually doing it myself when I was around 12 or so.” Foote is partial to what he calls “southern barbecue,” with ribs and Boston butts as his all-time favorites. “I like to cook them slow and low, over a relatively low heat for a long time,” he said. He also makes his own sauces and makes sure to either soak or inject the meat with a special solution of salt, sugar and water (or brining) prior to cooking. The sauces are vinegar based and characterized by Foote as “sweet heat.” “In my personal opinion, a good barbecue sauce needs a little heat to it,” he said. “Not so hot that people can’t eat it, but with a little heat. And I like Carolina-style vinegar sauces, because that’s what my grandmother made.” In addition to cooking for family and friends and catering, Foote is also one-third of The Smoking Crows, a competitive grilling team. His twin brother Dale and Stephen Lee, a friend and co-worker from Benjamin Moore, round out the team.

“ ”

“In my personal opinion, a good barbecue sauce needs a little heat to it; not so hot that people can’t eat it, but with a little heat.” —David Foote “Most of the people who compete in the Kansas City Barbecue Society competitions do it full time and have $200,000 mobile homes with $20,000 grills in them. We just do it part time and keep our day jobs,” he said. They got into competitive grilling almost by accident. “We all hunt and fish, and one year we decided we were going to enter the Wild Game Cookoff, which was at Homestead Hollow in Springville that year. They were teaming up with the Kansas City Barbecue Society to have an event there at the same time. We were approached about entering the Wild Game Cookoff, and my brother suggested we go ahead and enter the barbecue contest as well, since we were going to be there anyway.” The name came about when they were scrolling through the names of some of the other teams online, from New York to California. “There’s nothing to keep two teams from having the same name, and a lot of them do,” he said. “There were about a million teams on there called the Smoking Joes. Stephen said we can’t use that one, but we could be the Smoking Crows, since we eat so much of it. Then when we showed up, that’s the name we were registered under.” They didn’t place in that first barbecue competition, but they won the Wild Game Cookoff that year. They used the $4,000 prize money to purchase a trailer and a competition cooker in Louisiana. “The cooker can hold 16 butts or 35 slabs of ribs, but you have to remember when you’re cooking competitively, it’s only for those six judges. You have to concentrate on the things you’ll be judged on, like taste, presentation and sauce.” The Smoking Crows have never gone on the nation competition circuit, choosing to sign up for events in the immediate area. Commerical

Residential

“We’ve found competitions in places like Decatur, Huntsville, Memphis, that area. Last year we placed in the top 10 out of 72 teams at the Stoking the Fires event at Sloss Furnaces, and we’ve placed in the top 10 in the state and regional championships as well.” Entering a competition can cost as much as $350, so the Smoking Crows entered into a sponsorship agreement with Royal Sausage to cover their entry fees, Foote said. While he was being interviewed for this article, Foote said he was actually firing up his own grill and getting ready to put on some pork chops for his family. He said he is looking forward to working on the trailer and getting ready to travel again. He has not been able to compete for a while because of some health issues. “I was in the hospital being treated for double pneumonia when I had a massive heart attack,” he explained. “Which is a good thing. If I had been at home in bed when it happened, I would have died. One of the arteries to my heart was completely blocked, and another was about 90 percent.” Foote’s family has a history of artery problems, he said, and he and his doctor are agreement that being a grill master was not a factor in his heart attack. “I’m 49, 6 foot 5 and I weigh 195 pounds. My cholesterol is under 200. When I was coming out of surgery, my daughter was there when I woke up and said something about not being able to eat barbecue any more,” Foote said. “My doctor looked at me and said, ‘you were born in Alabama, right?’” “That’s right, I said.” He looked at my daughter and said, “Most likely he’s going to die eating barbecue many, many years from now. That’s not the problem.”

New Splash in Tour of Homes

ost people look at houses from the land — but when you are looking for a lake home, what better way to view the house than from the water? “They do a Parade of Homes in many cities,” said Nancy Locklar, owner of Realty Executives Complete in Pell City. “I decided to do a lake promotion tour, the Logan Martin Lake Parade of Homes.” Locklar said the lake tour would offer prospective buyers a look at many listed houses along the lake. “A lot of them don’t realize how beautiful the home is from the water,” she said. On a sunny Saturday afternoon, hopeful buyers and real estate agents boarded an 18-by-97-foot houseboat and set off to tour the lake. “Looking at a house online is a lot different than looking at

it from the lake,” said Jan Clendenon, who was on the tour with her husband, Landy. The Clendenons, who live in north Shelby County, said they are looking for a second home on the southern part of the lake, preferably near the dam. “We would like to have a fun place for us and our kids, Lauren, who is a senior at the University of Alabama, and Haley, who will be a freshman at Alabama,” she said. “This will be a nice place for the kids and their friends, and grandkids eventually.” Landy Clendenon said the couple found a house on Griffitt Bend, but the sale fell through and they were looking for another lake home. “We saw one on the tour we may go look at,” Jan Clendenon said. As the houseboat cruised along the lake, attendees were able to enjoy the water, the sun and breeze, catered refreshments and music by Dan Walton and Jeremy “Willow” Willis, of the Dixieland Disciples, featuring Rebekah Knott. Partway through the tour, another boat pulled alongside, delivering Norma Jean Prestley. “I missed the boat,” Prestley said. “I was asking around for someone to take me to the boat, and a very nice gentleman, Mr. Joe, gave me a lift.” Locklar said the Logan Martin Lake Parade of Homes maiden voyage was quite successful. “Everyone had a great time,” she said. “We will do another lake tour Labor Day weekend.”

LAKESIDE MARKETPLACE

Donette and Bruce Bower, who live in the Pine Harbor community, said they are thinking of downsizing. Donette Bower said this was the first time they had looked seriously at prospective lake homes. “We are considering purchasing a lot and building a house but are willing to change if we see something we want,” she said. “It’s hard to find exactly what you want.” Donette Bower said she prefers the Pell City side of the lake. “As long as it’s on the lake,” her husband said. The Bowers liked the idea of the tour by boat. “The houseboat is great — you can barely tell you’re moving,” she said. “And it’s the perfect temperature.”

Attendees were able to enjoy a selection of catered refreshments.

or this retired teacher, selling homes is a perfect fit. Karen Bain began her second career in 2007. “I retired from the Pell City School System after 25 years,” she said. Bain, who taught special education and was an assistant principal, retired as director of student services at the central office. “I retired and played tennis for about six months,” she said. “But I’m a workaholic and couldn’t sit still.” Bain said longtime friend Lawrence Fields talked her into getting a real estate license. “I had coached his daughter in volleyball, and we had been friends for a long time,” she said.

about the wonderful Pell City community. “I enjoy telling them about the community and the lake and the schools — what a great place this is to live and raise a family,” she said. “I used the same concept when I was hiring teachers — you use that same mentality with buyers. You fall in love with the Pell City community and this area.” Bain said the Pell City community has a lot going for it — the new St. Vincent’s St. Clair Hospital, new businesses coming in, strong churches, a caring community, Logan Martin Lake and much more. “Having a great community makes it easier to sell,” she said.
